Did you have an apprenticeship?
Yes I have. I was apprenticed to an old master for 4 years who taught me everything about traditional tattooing and freehand drawing
I come from the graffiti game and painted many years before I became a tattoo artist, so I have always liked the graphic expression with solid lines and packed surfaces. so, when I became a tattooist, it was natural for me to move into the new school genre. but as time has passed and everything moves, it became more neotraditional. for me it is not so important which category falls under but let's call it neo traditional. I never allow myself to limit it to suit a certain genre, but I have some basic principles I like to work according to. I really like the balance between Lines and sort areas.
And why do you stick to that style?
That is always the big question it is so difficult to put into words exactly. one's style starts in one place and ends in another. it moves just like life does but when that is said, I think a line can say a lot. and therefore, it is natural for me to move in that direction
Where do you get your inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from everywhere. artist nature and feelings. but of course you get inspired by other artists. in recent years it has especially been artists who are good at working with the body's shapes that have inspired me a lot. artists like Fibs Stevemoore and you for example is something that has pushed my limit
Are you using reference pictures and if yes,
It's a bit different, as a starting point, I always only make my own things, but I can have some references that I look at when I have to draw something do you trace the rough proportions? Which machines and which stroke are you using?
I use hmc machines 4.0 and cheyenne 4.0 for most of my work
How would you describe your tattoo technique?
Do you see yourself as an artist or a service provider?
I see myself as an artist. it is not a choice for me, but something I have to do in order to thrive in the world. I have always been creative and painted and drew before I got paid for it and I will still do that the day I don't it’s a language it would be the same as asking a human being not to speak. for me it's not a job I'm just lucky I can make a living from it too I really like your oil paintings and that they are in a different style than your tattoos.
How does it come, that you have a different style there?
As I said before, I painted before I tattooed, so it is quite natural for me to return to painting at times. i love doing tattoos but sometimes i need to do something else in other mediums to be able to express myself it is important for me to express myself in other media. sometimes it's paintings sometimes music or poems and mostly it's tattoos what I like when I paint is to be allowed to let go more and not be as structured as when I tattoo. I can be more immediate and work with feelings, whereas when I tattoo, I have a plan.
Are you doing exhibitions with your paintings, and do you see it as a second standing?
I've held quite a few exhibitions, but it's been a while now. the past few years i have been very focused on tattooing. but it will probably come again I've been painting for a living for a few years and I hope that in my old days I might be lucky enough to live a bit of it again and take it all quietly with the people around me that I love. Life has taught me things rarely turn out the way you think, but now that you ask, I hope to have settled far out in the country with the girl I'm dating and in love with. you know who you are haha! with a small private studio where I can do all my creative things with my children around me,
Gustavo Bulldog's journey into the world of tattoo artistry is a story of passion, creativity, and relentless dedication. His love for the craft began in a rather unconventional way "Let's say that I fell in love with the buzz (both the machine and the vibe), and never looked back!" he recalls with a smile. This serendipitous attraction to the sound and energy of the tattoo machine marked the beginning of his lifelong commitment to the art form.
Over the years, Gustavo has transformed his body into a vibrant canvas, showcasing the work of various talented artists. "I'm a walking canvas of various artists, like a tattoo mixtape!" he proudly declares Each piece of art on his body tells a story, contributing to a rich tapestry of experiences and influences that have shaped his artistic vision.
Tattooing has led Gustavo into some unusual and memorable situations. He fondly remembers one particularly bizarre request: "Tattooed a sea life background on a male butt... he insisted!" This quirky experience highlights the unpredictable and often humorous nature of his profession.
When it comes to his own artistic preferences, Gustavo gravitates towards freehand dark bio tattoos. "I like to do freehand dark bio tattoos, but not so many clients ask for it," he admits. Nevertheless, he finds immense satisfaction in creating realistic tattoos with intricate textures and smooth shadings. This blend of precision and creativity allows him to bring his clients' visions to life in stunning detail.
One of the most rewarding aspects of Gustavo's career has been the opportunity to travel and participate in tattoo conventions worldwide. "Traveling to conventions worldwide and meeting new places and new people who turn into lifelong friends," he reflects. These experiences have not only broadened his artistic horizons but also fostered deep connections within the global tattoo community
Despite his own impressive skills, Gustavo remains humble and full of admiration for his peers. "There's a lot of great artists and legends that I admire, I can name only one!" he says, acknowledging the immense talent and contributions of others in the field.
Had he not pursued a career in tattooing, Gustavo imagines he would have found another creative outlet. "Probably a chef, it's another way to create art, but with flavors instead of ink," he muses. This parallel between culinary arts and tattooing underscores his inherent drive to create and innovate.
Beyond the realm of tattoos and art, Gustavo's passions extend to motorcycles and music. "Life's better with a good ride and a great soundtrack!" he exclaims. This love for the open road and the rhythm of music adds another layer to his multifaceted personality, enriching his life and, by extension, his art.
Gustavo Bulldog's journey is a testament to the power of following one's passion and the joy of creating art that resonates with people. His story is a vibrant blend of personal experiences, artistic achievements, and the enduring connections forged through the universal language of tattoos.

The band, the myth, the legend. If you've ever found yourself in a raging mosh pit or belting out angsty lyrics in your bedroom, chances are you've come across Deftones. Deftones, often hailed as one of the most innovative and influential alternative metal bands of their generation, have left an indelible mark on the music industry. Formed in Sacramento, California in the late 1980s, Deftones quickly gained recognition for their unique sound blending elements of alternative rock and metal. With their powerful and atmospheric compositions, emotive lyrics, and the captivating vocal range of lead singer Chino Moreno there is nothing quite like Deftones out there.
Like any legendary band, Deftones had humble beginnings. They first came together in 1988, formed by Stephen Carpenter (guitar) and Chino Moreno (vocals) and Abe Cunningham (drums) Joined by, Chi Cheng (bass), and later on, Frank Delgado (keyboard/turntable), they solidified their lineup and embarked on a musical journey that would defy genres and expectations.
Current line-up:
Stephen Carpenter - guitar
Abe Cunningham - drums
Chino Moreno - vocals
Frank Delgado – keyboard / turntable
Fred Sablan – bass (touring)
Text by Mike MikhellTrying to classify Deftones into a single genre is like trying to put a square peg in a round hole – it just doesn't quite fit. Their music is a captivating blend of alternative metal, post-metal, and even elements of electronic and triphop. Their ability to seamlessly transition from aggressive and heavy to ethereal and melodic is what makes them truly stand out in the music world
In 1995, they released their debut album, "Adrenaline," which introduced the world to their distinctive sound With tracks like "Bored" and "7 Words," the album showcased their raw energy and lyrical intensity, setting the stage for their future success.
Deftones' breakthrough came with their second album, "Around the Fur," which propelled them into the mainstream consciousness. The album's lead single, "My Own Summer (Shove It)," became an instant alternative radio hit From there, they continued to soar, releasing charttopping albums like "White Pony" (" with its dark, moody atmospheres and standout tracks like "Change (In the House of Flies)," to the ethereal and haunting soundscapes of "Saturday Night Wrist,") and "Diamond Eyes."
Over the years, their mesmerizing music and captivating live performances have earned them critical acclaim, a dedicated fanbase, and a place among the most influential rock bands of their generation.
I have had a chance to see them live on several occasions and I have never been disappointed!
People often think that Christianity and metal are on the opposite sides of the scale. But from 1992 a band from Southern California proves that it does not have to be so. P.O.D., an initialism for Payable on Death is formed in 1992 and based in San Diego.
After his mother's fatal illness, Sonny Sandoval converted to Christianity and was asked by Wuv Bernardo, his cousin, to join the band he had with Marcos Curiel, as a way to keep his mind straight They then recruited bassist Gabe Portillo and eventually became what now we know as P.O.D.
After recording a demo tape, Traa Daniels joined the band in 1994 when they needed a bassist for some shows to replace Portillo. P.O.D. signed with Rescue Records, a label created by Bernardo's father, Noah Bernardo Sr., who was also the band's first manager. Between 1994 and 1997, they released three albums under the label, Snuff the Punk, Brown and Payable on Death Live Longtime manager Tim Cook was first introduced to the band when he booked them to play his club The Where-House in Bartlesville, Oklahoma following strong local word of mouth support.
Thier third studio album, 1999's The Fundamental Elements of Southtown, spawned the hits "Southtown" and "Rock the Party (Off the Hook)", which was their first video to reach No. 1 on MTV's Total Request Live. he song "School of Hard Knocks" was featured on the soundtrack for Little Nicky while both "Southtown" and "Rock the Party" appeared in the movie
On September 11, 2001
P.O.D. released their fourth studio album, Satellite which features the band’s best known songs"Alive" and "Youth of the Nation" (the later one influenced in part by the school shootings at Santana High School, Columbine High School, and Granite Hills High School)
Throughout the year P O D continued touring (the first time I saw them live was in 2000 in Katowice, Poland, when they were supporting KoRn) and recording albums. On all of their records P O D remained true to their roots whilst continuing to evolve their sound. Their music reflects their personal beliefs and experiences, creating a connection with their fans that goes beyond just the music itself.
P.O.D's musical style can be described as a mix of alternative metal, nu-metal, and reggae The band's sound is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, powerful drum beats, and catchy melodies. Sonny Sandoval's vocals add depth and emotion to their songs, with lyrics that explore themes of faith, hope, and personal redemption
One of the defining features of POD's music is their ability to seamlessly blend different genres and influences. From the reggae-infused rhythms to the hardhitting metal sound the band's versatility and creativity shine through in every song they create.
They released their latest album Veritas in May 2024 and it is definitely worth a listen – with many guests appearing on the album (Randy Blythe of Lamb of God and Tatian Shmayluk of Jinjer among others) the album takes you on an interesting trip
