Throughout the years Poland has been home to many great metal bands, but only few of those managed to gain international recognition. One of them is Behemoth – a real giant on the black metal scene This band isn’t just a group of musicians; they are artists who’ve carved a deep and dark path through the genre with their unique style and powerful performances Founded in 1991, Behemoth started as a black metal band in Gdańsk – a Polish seaside city. With Adam "Nergal" Darski at the helm, their early work was raw and intense As years rolled by, they transformed their sound, blending elements of death metal and even some orchestral influences. Album by album their music was getting more and more polished and captivating Each album tells a story, drawing listeners into a dark narrative filled with themes of chaos, mythology, and the struggle between light and shadow Their 1999 album, "Pandemonic Incantations," marked a turning point, showcasing their shift towards a more aggressive and innovative sound It’s like watching a caterpillar transform into a fearsome dragon
The band’s later works, such as "The Satanist" released in 2014, are a testament to their growth. This album received critical acclaim and solidified Behemoth’s place in the metal pantheon. It’s not just music; it’s an experience that challenges listeners to confront their beliefs and fears.
Behemoth’s lyrics are also not your “off the shelf” ‘oh, oh, oh, Satan, Satan, Satan’ crap. They take a deep dive into philosophy, religion, and personal struggles. Nergal’s words paint pictures full of emotions challenge societal norms, resembling a rebel shouting in the face of convention. For instance, tracks like "O Father O Satan O Sun!" blend personal and universal themes, making you ponder as you bang your head to the beat.
I had a chance to see them perform live at Heavy Scotland festival in 2018. Not only that – as I was working backstage, I had a chance to meet the guys. And despite all the scary gut up and corpse paint they are genuinely nice guys! Seeing Behemoth live is like stepping into a different world. Their shows are theatrical, featuring elaborate stage setups, stunning visuals (and fire), and a palpable energy that electrifies the audience. The combination of heavy riffs, haunting melodies, and haunting vocals creates an atmosphere that’s both exhilarating and overwhelming. It’s like being engulfed in a massive wave of sound that carries you through a sea of raw emotion. It’s not just a gig - it’s an immersive experience where fans feel like they’re part of something grand and powerful.
Fun fact: Nergal together with John Porter formed a blues/folk band Me and That Man. Have a listen it’s really good!

So far I have presented in this music section of the magazine many bands from a lot of different metal subgenres. But there is a band representing one branch of metal I have not delved into – i.e. industrial metal. And out of many bands that fit the “industrial” bill, there is one that stands out (at least for me, who is not a huge fan of industrial metal). Fear Factory are a sonic force that blends heavy metal with electronic sounds. Founded in the early '90s, this Los Angeles-based outfit was among those leading the metal scene revolution. Electronic sounds were used in metal previously, but these guys took it a bit further.
What makes Fear Factory stand out?
It’s their unique sound They mix heavy guitar riffs, aggressive yet melodic vocals, and electronic elements Imagine someone singing to heavy as hell riffs on a working factory’s floor that’s the essence of their music. This blend creates an atmosphere that pulls listeners in and doesn't let go. Songs like “Replica” and “Shock” showcase this raw energy, and once you hear them, you can’t help but headbang along.
Fear Factory's lyrics are true to their industrial roots exploring themes of technology, alienation, and the human condition within mechanical era They dive deep into the struggles of modern life, making their music relatable. For instance, in tracks like “Demanufacture,” the lyrics address the feeling of being trapped in a machine-like existence. It’s like they’re holding up a mirror to society, forcing us to confront uncomfortable truths. And my favourite song, a ballad like piece, “Expiration Date” talks about how fleeting human life is, and that we are all born with an “expiration date” (with a hard-hitting citation of Rutger Hauer’s character from “Blade Runner”)
Fear Factory has continuously evolved their sound. From their debut album, "Soul of a New Machine," to the more recent "Aggression Continuum," they've pushed boundaries while staying true to their roots They’ve faced challenges, such as lineup changes (and these were many, the most recent was parting ways with the long standing vocalist Burton C Bell), but always come back stronger. It’s like watching a phoenix rise from the ashes ready to take on the world again.
Fear Factory has carved out a legacy in the metal world that influences countless bands They played a crucial role in the rise of industrial metal, inspiring the next generation of musicians. Bands like Slipknot and Meshuggah cite Fear Factory as a major inspiration. Their impact is undeniable, much like the aftershocks of a major earthquake that reshape the landscape.
Fear Factory's willingness to challenge conventions and embrace the unknown has solidified their place as pioneers of industrial metal, inspiring generations of fans and artists alike.
Fun fact:
The band was called “Ulceration” when they started, because they thought “it was just a cool name”. They changed it to Fear Factory in 1990.
Lineup: DinoCazares–guitars,backingvocals
TonyCampos–bass,backingvocals

I've had the privilege of attending 5 tattoo events and shows, where I’ve gathered numerous awards and had the chance to be on a jury
At the Bologna Tattoo Show 2022, a major event featuring more than 200 Italian and international artists, I earned 2nd Best of Show At the Milan Tattoo Convention, one of Europe's top conventions with over 500 artists, I took 2nd place in the Black and Grey category I also achieved 2nd Best of Saturday at the Paris Tattoo Planetarium Convention 2024 and 3rd place for Best Realistic at the Vicenza Tattoo Convention Additionally, I've judged categories such as ‘Black and White,’ ‘Realistic Black and White,’ and Best ‘Combo’ at The Iron Gate Tattoo Convention in Sydney and the Napoli Tattoo Expo I absolutely loved Gods of Ink It's incredibly inspiring and impressively organized, especially given its size and the diverse, top-notch artists it hosts from around the world The art exhibitions are also a highlight, offering a lot of inspiration Similarly, the Tattoo Planetarium in Paris was a fantastic experience with its beautiful setup, amazing artists, great organization, and delicious food!

No I haven’t been, but I started an acting school as a child in Australia
6) Are you most into winter or summer holidays?
Definitely summer holidays, I‘m not really a winter type of person
7) Do you have any specific hobbies besides your work as an artist?
Yes! I love doing sports like anything that‘s really tiring like kickboxing, swimming or interval workouts. I get a lot of joy out of reading books, meditating and being in nature with my dogs Of course drawing or painting have been my hobby for a very long time Now I also would like to try myself again in music cause I played guitar and sang in the past Maybe I have too many hobbies but I've been interested in many things, always trying to find the right balance in my life to stay healthy
8) You’ve been on the jury of The Iron Gate Tattoo Convention Sydney - can you tell us about how you evaluate upcoming talents?
Being a juror at The Iron Gate Tattoo Convention in Sydney is both exciting and challenging. With so many talented artists showcasing their work, picking winners can be tough. I always focus on the technique and how well the tattoo flows with the body.
9) Some of the awards you’ve received are 2nd Best of Show at Bologna Tattoo Show and 2nd Place in Black and Grey at Milan Tattoo Convention- what were some of the challenges involved with achieving those awards?
Winning awards at top conventions definitely comes with its fair share of challenges With so many incredibly talented artists in one place, the competition is tough You have to work under tight time constraints, which can be stressful Plus, staying focused isn't easy with all the noise and distractions around you at these busy events It's all about balancing skill, creativity, and keeping your cool amidst the excitement

5) Have you been in any tv shows or programmes/series?
I've never been on any TV shows.
6) Are you most into winter or summer holidays? While holidays are always enjoyable, whether spent in the mountains or by the sea, living in Switzerland means I'm often close to the mountains. Therefore, when I go on holiday, I prefer to choose a warm seaside destination.
7) You've been on the jury for many conventions- can you tell us about how you evaluate upcoming talents?
I've had the privilege of judging various contests at different tattoo conventions. At the "Milano Tattoo Convention," I judged the "Small Black and Grey" contest for two consecutive years. In Naples, at the "Napoli Tattoo Expo," I served as a judge for the "Chicano," "Best Combo," and "Best of Show" contests. Similarly, at the "Vicenza Tattoo Convention," I judged contests including "Chicano" and "Best in Show."
Judging tattoos at conventions, especially in the beginning, is no easy task. It requires careful consideration of every aspect of a tattoo, from design, composition, and balance to impact, technique, and fine details. The higher the level of talent among the tattoo artists, the more challenging it becomes to select the top three places. Each piece often has something unique and impressive, making the decision even tougher.
8) You've received many awards at top conventionswhat were some of the challenges involved with achieving awards at top conventions
When judging a piece, I consider various factors such as the project's concept, composition, balance, impact, technique, and details. These elements are crucial for evaluating a tattoo's overall effectiveness and quality. Consequently, whenever I create a tattoo, I strive to adhere to these principles to ensure the piece works as best as possible. Being very selfcritical, I believe this self-assessment is vital for continuous improvement and growth as an artist. It allows me to refine my skills and consistently produce work that meets high standards.

Introducing Denis Casella, an exceptional artist renowned for his masterful B’n’G vision. Based in the heart of Milan, Denis brings his unique artistic flair to life at Remember Me Tattoo.
1) Where you from?
I’m from Italy, born and raised in Milan but at the moment I’m living between Milan and Florence
2) How long have you been tattooing as a pro?
I began my journey into tattooing in 2012. It all started when I visited the Milan Tattoo Convention as a tourist. I had saved up a little money, intending to get a new tattoo. However, a friend suggested, "Instead of spending that money on a tattoo, why not buy a tattoo kit? We can try it out at home tonight." I took their advice, and two weeks later, a line of people from my town was outside my door, eager to get free tattoos.
3) What is your favorite style of tattooing?
My true passion is definitely black and grey tattooing. When I first started, I explored various styles, including traditional and lettering, which I particularly enjoyed. However, the moment I tried my hand at black and grey, even though my first attempt wasn't great, I was captivated. It was love at first sight, and I knew then that I wanted to master this art form. I told myself, "I want to try and get really good at this."
4) Have you been attending International Tattoo events?
- If yes, which one is your favorite?
I've been fortunate to attend many incredible tattoo conventions, both as an artist and a judge. At the Milan Tattoo Convention, one of Europe's premier tattoo events, I placed 3rd in Medium Black and Grey in 2024, 2nd in the same category in 2022, and took 1st place in 2020. With over 500 artists and a huge audience, this convention has been a major platform for me to showcase my skills.
At the Bern Tattoo Convention, I won 1st place in both the Black and White category and the Best of Saturday category, and also secured 2nd place for Best of Friday. This event, featuring around 170 artists from around the world, was a great opportunity to demonstrate my versatility and talent.
In addition to competing, I've had the honor of serving as a jury member at prestigious conventions, such as the Vicenza Tattoo Convention in 2024 and the Urban Land Tattoo Expo in Rome from 2021 to 2023. My expertise and critical eye have been valuable in assessing and guiding emerging talents in the industry.
"Gods of Ink" was an unforgettable experience, filled with a mix of emotions. It's the kind of convention that every tattoo artist aspires to be a part of, and being there made me feel like I had contributed something meaningful to the industry. In the last edition, I worked on a backpiece with Kindamo, tattooing for three consecutive days. I don't think I've ever tattooed for as many hours straight as I did during those days. It was a great time spent with some of my favorite tattoo artists and friends. The Bishop family dinner was a priceless experience, adding a special touch to the event
5) Have you been in any tv shows or programmes/series?
Not yet. I'm a huge fan of Ink Master and love watching it with my girlfriend. We enjoy judging tattoos from the comfort of our sofa! However, I'm not sure if I would ever participate in a show like that. I wouldn't want to end up looking like the villain of the season.
6) Are you most into winter or summer holidays?
I'm definitely a summer person—I love spending time by the sea or at the pool, and I enjoy being out on a boat. However, I make sure to have fun in the winter too. Believe it or not, I'm also a pretty great skier!
7) Do you have any specific hobbies besides your work as an artist?
I spent many years doing motocross, but with all the traveling I do now for tattooing, I had to make a tough decision. I ended up selling my bike to a friend who enjoys it every weekend. He did promise, though, that I can ride it whenever I want! On top of that, I'm a true nerd at heart. In my free time, I love playing video games and watching TV series.
8) You’ve been on the jury of Urban Land Tattoo Expo Rome since 2021: - can you tell us about how you evaluate upcoming talents?
Being on the jury of the Urban Land Tattoo Expo in Rome has always been a challenging experience due to the abundance of talented participants. It's never easy to pick a winner, as each artist brings a unique blend of skill and creativity to the table. When evaluating the entries, I consider multiple factors, such as line work, shading, body flow, and various other technical aspects. These elements are crucial in assessing the overall quality and artistry of the tattoos, making the decision-making process both complex and rewarding.
9) You’ve received 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in Medium Black and Grey at Milan Tattoo Convention over the years- what were some of the challenges involved with achieving awards at top conventions
The biggest challenges in achieving those awards definitely include the intense level of competition, the variety of styles and techniques, and the pressure of tight deadlines. On top of that there are always people stopping by and watching you work, which is nice but also adds on additional pressure.
