“Our regular clients have either booked in for a mix of their usual vivid tones or have decided to strip the old colour and go for something completely new. Throughout lockdown I experimented on wigs and dolls and found so many new techniques so they’re eager to try a new look,” says Jeseca.

It’s easy to understand the desire for brighter, bolder colour as clients have had a lot of time to think about what they want to try next! For Jeseca McMahon of Son of a Bleach, Stourport, it’s always been about the most vibrant shades.
Adele Clarke, of Spectrum Hair, St Helen’s, says clients are looking for colour that boosts their confidence. She says:” it’s a time of reinvention. We will have the cautious people who want to go for lighter, brighter tones to lift their mood, but without the high maintenance but there will also be those clients who want to completely break the mould and throw caution to the wind!” Nikita Fisher of Palmer Fisher, London agrees.

#1 When I think of SS21 colour I’m thinking…Perfect Pastels We’ve seen a huge increase in the use of pastels, with shades such as mint green, lilac, rose and peach trending for the season. It’s all about a light and fresh vibe.
It has to be cosy copper tones. Before lockdown there was huge demand for beautiful, rich copper tones and they’re here to stay for the summer, but we’ll see them in lighter, more subtle shades. Also, expect to see glowing copper become the colour of the year for redheads!
#3 Where I find my colour inspiration I am inspired by everything I see; from nature and flowers to the sun rising and setting and all the transitions in between,
whether that’s in the sky or on the ground.

“For me there are two key trends,” says Darrel. “First, it’s about fiery red; think ruby and fire shades that are eyecatching, warm and strong. Next, it’s peach blossom, inspired by last years’ pastels but taking it a step further by adding warm blonde and fiery reds at the roots. Think a peach balayage!”

“For me, it’s about short hair and longer hair, with the main reason stemming from two factors of 2020: some men decided to shave their own hair during lockdown, while others decided they would finally try to grow their hair out, seeing it as a great opportunity. “As such I expect to see more longer and textured hair coming through and also feel this might lead to guys adding in some colour for the summer. Another trend I’m seeing is on the guys who shaved their hair; they’ve grown used to it and are enjoying playing with shorter textured hair, so we can definitely expect crops to be big this season.”

#1 Short and textured cuts have been on the rise and I predict will be the most popular cuts for men. This look works best when the sides are kept a little shorter than the top and emphasis is made on adding texture to the top of the hair.
#2 Military long takes its inspiration from the classic military cut but has added length on top. The key to this look is keeping the sides and back shaved fairly close to the skin and the hair on top being left longer than usual; this provides movement and a disconnected look.
#3 High top fade, like a lot of hairstyles and fashion, this is making a comeback. Popular in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the high top fade is all about clean, precise lines with a gradient on the sides. I particularly love this look on those with curly, afro and textured hair; it feels very fresh and works well at highlighting a client’s facial features.
#4 Ashy, smoky greys and platinum are great colour options for men who want to give their style a very fashion-led look. For those who like to stand out platinum is a great choice but for those who really want to make a statement, I predict turquoise and blues will be major.

After months of substandard DIY efforts and excessive length, your clients are no doubt buzzing to get back to blonde. We spoke to some of our faves to find out their bold blonde predictions for SS21.
For industry award-winner Anne Veck, the consultation is key, whether it’s for a new or existing blonde client. “With many clients returning to the salon with large regrowth and most likely wanting to return immediately to their blonde looks you want to ensure you get it right,” says Anne.

“Discuss with your client exactly what they want; how blonde do they want to go? Are they willing to change the shape of their hair? It’s also important to know their full hair history so you’ll need to go as far back as the length of their hair, around three years if it’s passed their shoulders.”

Blushing Blondes This summer is all about celebrating blondes and embracing something new. For Darrel Starkey of Taylor’s Hair Studio, that means the Blushing Blonde. “Following on from the Rose Gold trend of the past few years, we’re moving the trend on and taking inspiration from a pink diamond and pastel palette – think pretty and creative,” says Darrel. Tim Scott-Wright says summer is all about his globally blonde trend, where a stunning rose gold is added to natural red hair, resulting in

This also means they can leave longer periods of time in between colour appointments. Dylan explains: “As we move towards Summer, clients will be opting for that beautiful, relaxed, lived-in blonde – sun- kissed and beachy: it’s all about that golden hour effect. Instead of a bold and heavy change, the colour choice will enhance the client’s natural colour and complement their complexion and natural texture.”
Take care With all blondes, it’s important to leave the hair as healthy as possible, and even when you’re creating the most beautiful blondes possible, it could go to 16
waste if you don’t educate your clients on aftercare. “After conducting a poll on my Instagram, 86 percent of my clients said they planned on choosing a bright colour for their first appointment back in the salon,” says Holly. And those brights are sitting alongside the increasingly popular trend for pastel tones.
“While the pandemic sort of created a halt on everything, including a lot of trends, it’s a good idea to watch what is being dictated by influencers in the nail world,” says Julie-Anne. “Someone will create something and boom, all of a sudden it’s the next big thing! This means it’s super important for anyone in the nail industry to keep a close eye on social platforms, especially Instagram, if they want to keep up to date.”

For Julie-Anne, the key trends will be still be tortoiseshell, the French manicure, stone/marble effects and mismatched nail art. After experimenting throughout lockdown, many nail techs are unleashing their creative talent and throwing out the rule book, mixing and matching a range of techniques and styles, such as negative space, geometric or animal print designs. Julie-Anne says it’s also a mixed bag when it comes to nail shape, as clients will embrace everything from long coffins to short squares. When it comes to colour choices, Julie-Anne says: “Think bright and bold; oranges, blues and bright pinks but muted nudes will also shine.”
Holly says, “Pastels have been massive, whether it’s one colour or using a selection or using them to create a French manicure. But I also think metallics will be huge. There’s been a return to using chrome powders, as they give such an amazing, reflective finish and can easily be combined with different colours, plus they’re easily incorporated into a Gel Manicure.” Holly says gold detailing will also be a huge trend, but perhaps even more importantly, the desire for hand and nail treatments is on the rise. “With the increased hand washing and sanitising, clients are keen to work on improving the condition of their hands. I offer a Hand & Nail Treatment as so many clients are dealing with dry skin and cuticles. TANNING TRENDS Over the next five years spray tanning is set to explode. Industry reports put it down to a diversified audience and it makes a lot of sense. The market is growing in two key sectors; men’s tanning, which has steadily been on the rise over the past few years, but more recently, women of colour are picking up tanning products. It seems everyone, whatever their tone, is wanting to add a glow to their skin and tanning has become an essential luxury.
