ADVICE

Jay Birmingham, celebrity hairdresser and session stylist. Monday

Location

To kick start a super busy week in my life, Monday began with me working on a magazine cover shoot. My day started early as I headed to Arcadia magazine to style TV sports presenter and former professional footballer, Alex Scott’s hair.

London Years in business

@jaybirmingham_ @jayb.hair

A WEEK IN

The creative brief for the front cover shoot was natural, effortless glam, so I styled Alex’s hair into a voluminous wave with volume and texture around her face. Shoots like this mean I get to work closely with the talent, the makeup artist and the photographer so it’s a collaboration between all of us as creatives; it’s one of my favourite parts of my job as a celebrity and session stylist.

Tuesday Today I worked with my gorgeous client, Munroe Bergdorf. She was heading to the Bridgerton season 2 premiere in London so I loved getting her red carpet ready. Munroe is such an amazing source of inspiration and working with her allows me to create and style lots of wigs, which I love as it means we can change her look in an instant. I love the buzz of getting celebrities ready for the red carpet!

Today was an exciting day assisting one of my favourite celebrity hairdressing peers, Andrew Fitzsimmons. He’s recently launched his own range of products and asked me to assist him with styling the hair for a model for an event in London. I drove to the glamorous NoMad hotel in London and worked on the hair with Andrew and the team. Working collaboratively like this is always great fun

and leaves me feeling really inspired.

collection and have a sneak peek at the looks.

Thursday

Saturday

Today marked the end of my journey working with the gorgeous Maya Jama as she filmed for the hit BBC TV show, Glow Up. I’ve been working with Maya for around two months since she started presenting this season of the show and today was the filming finale; it was such an honour to celebrate everyone’s hard work with the team. For Maya’s look for the show we opted for a very cool girl aesthetic; her style was stripped back and effortlessly gorgeous which is my favourite.

I’m heading to Los Angeles for the iconic Coachella festival next week so I spent the morning organising my kit and making sure I’m all stocked up on my favourite hero products for the occasion. For trips like this, you can never be too organised. I make sure to pack a selection of clip-in extensions and hair pieces as well as a few different heated styling tools so I’m ready to create a variety of looks.

Friday During the day I worked with a few of my regular clients. I still love client facing work from extensions to cut and style and sometimes I offer colour too. I think it’s important to have a balance so I often work with a few of my private clients throughout the week.

Following my morning of packing, I headed to style Rochelle’s hair. She was celebrating her birthday and wanted something polished and put together to head out and celebrate. I created a super shiny, soft wave through her hair before I tied half of her hair up to create a subtle lifted effect round her face. To elevate her style I created a defined centre parting to bring it altogether.

Jay’s advice

“Make sure you are always the hardest worker in the room. Remain professional but f riendly at all times and try not to blur the lines between your work life and personal life too much. Always be open to opportunities but have confidence and belief in yourself to say no to things that don’t feel right for you – everyone is on their own path.” In the evening I headed to The Londoner, to celebrate the launch of former singer and TV presenter Rochelle Humes’ collection with Next Official. I’m often invited to events like this due to my Instagram following and profile within the industry. This event was lovely and was a chance to celebrate Rochelle’s new

Sunday In contrast to my work with celebrities and creative work, I still work as a bridal hairdresser, so I headed to my hometown of Birmingham to work with a bride and create some classic, bridal glamour. Love it!

HOW TO:

MASTER TIKTOK Social media has become an industry staple when it comes to letting your clients know what you offer, how creative you are and what’s happening behind the scenes. While Facebook has always been known for its community focus, TikTok has taken over Instagram’s position as a visual communication tool; people love the intimacy and fun that TikTok embraces. Check out our top TikTok tips!

Here, Chris O’Riordan, Manager at ST4men in Killarney, Ireland shares how he’s managed to gain over 10 million views on TikTok, growing his account from 800 to over 25,000.

Keep it short and simple One thing that really works is creating short videos up to seven or eight seconds long as this holds the viewers’ attention. Unfortunately in this ‘always-on’ environment, people don’t have the time or the attention span to focus on longer, more informative content. But this can be a bonus if you’re pressed for time and just want to create something short and simple to catch the eyes of your audience.

NEW ADDITION

A New Addition

TO THE EXPERT RANGE

Longer content is great for people looking for a very specific solution, such as learning a new technique, but the average person, day to day, is looking for short and sweet inspiration or information.

When to post If you take time to look at your insights on social media (Instagram is really good for this), you can work out the best time when most of your audience are active on social, meaning they are more likely to see your content. For me, that optimum time based on my location is 9pm. At that time vast amounts of people are generally sitting down aimlessly scrolling through their socials – and I know that I do too! Now you’ve got a captive audience, make sure you’ve got a good caption as it keeps people on your video for a few extra, and very precious, seconds while they read. Asking a question in the caption encourages comments, which in turn pushes your content out to more people because you are getting more engagement on that post. Always be sure to respond to anyone who comments; it’s good social media etiquette.

Winning content My most viewed TikTok on @chrisoriordanhair has almost 10million views over two postings. The video is of me taking a profile section; it’s just eight seconds long and shows me giving my tips on how to take a clean section. From that one video my following went from 800 to 26.5k. #3 Share as much information as you can in as short a period as possible. Show as much impact as possible in those first three seconds or you’re in danger of people scrolling past.

#1 As a hairdresser, we love sharing before and after shots and TikTok is the video version so get practicing and the more you do the better you will get.

#4 You don’t have to make professional content but do make sure that you’re well lit, we can hear you and your phone camera is focused, clean and clear.

#2 Always show your face because people want to follow people not brands. If you don’t feel confident showing your face, start with voice overs.

S Glossy hair rules

OPI

Whether your client’s in for colour or just a cut and style, everyone wants glamorous, shiny hair for Summer. Balayage Boss Samantha Cusick says glossing treatments are a brilliant and easy option to brighten any clients’ look.

Summer prep isn’t just for those clients who are jetting off; check out our list of warm weather must-haves f rom some of our favourite experts.

Get lashed! So many of the hot beauty trends for 2022 revolve around the eyes – it’s as if now the masks are (mostly) off, we want to show our eyes off even more. Alongside the trends for pastel eyeshadow and smudged eyeliner, voluminous lashes really make sense.

“My ultimate favourite for Summer ‘22 has to be the Fox Eye trend. The Fox Eye is created by using an L Curl lash and a bit of C curl to give a really winged sexy eyeliner effect. Another trend for Summer is mixing in coloured lashes – perfect for clients who are really fashion forward.” @xtreme_neauty_ncl

Darrel Starkey of Taylor’s Hair Studio agrees with Samantha, adding that glossing treatments can be marketed as mini treats for clients, whether they’re jetting off or staying at home. “Whether it’s a vacation or staycation, mini treatments work for every single client and are a great way to give hair a boost just in time for the Summer months; I love offering luxurious glossing or conditioning treatments for a really special touch. They can revitalise colour, lock it in, add the most incredible shine and leave hair looking and feeling amazing – such a great way to kick off the Summer season!” says Darrel.

12

Shutterstock

Rachel Young, of Xtreme Beauty, Newcastle upon Tyne is a Volume Lash specialist who’s really excited about the trend. “Lash extensions really do make my clients feel more confident and good about themselves, and gone are the days when getting your lashes done had to be for a special occasion or your holidays. There are now so many options to suit every personal preference, from a classic natural set, to wispy hybrid sets and volume sets.

“Freshening up your client’s colour with a gloss is such a quick, simple and cost-effective way of getting their hair Summer-ready. Glosses are a great way of updating their look and playing with a different tone; Redken is about to launch its new golden blondes as part of their fantastic Shades EQ family which is perfect for the holiday season.”

pressed for time as their trip approaches. Why not make things easier and offer them a treatment package, or as Darrel Starkey puts it: a ‘package deal’?

same way we use makeup on our faces. This is a top trend that’s ideal for special occasions, holidays and any of your clients who are body builders.”

Darrel’s been offering this to his clients already and is seeing a great response. He says:

The perfect wax

“Although I’m not one for offering discounts often, this is a brilliant and simple way to entice clients in; we combine two services into one and offer a ‘small’ discount, just enough for it to make sense to the client – they feel like they’ve saved time and money. Why not offer a ‘treatment and trim’ consisting of a cut, style and luxury treatment? Also, consider a price ending in a 0 or 5 – eg £30/£35 for these ‘deals’ - research has shown using a 0 or 5 causes the reader’s mind to think they’ve scored a bargain and it automatically captures their attention.”

Tanning - contouring that’s nothing to do with the face! For Salon System’s tanning expert Lisa Stone, Summer’s all about offering more and, she says, contouring is no longer the domain of the face. “Contouring with a tan is a really specialised technique that almost reshapes the body, highlighting areas the client wants to show off, while helping to disguise areas they’re not so in love with. Contouring can be used to give the illusion of slimmer, more toned areas, creating and sculpting a shape, much the

Some might say that during the pandemic waxing was one of those regular maintenance rituals that well and truly went out the window, and Salon System waxing expert Lisa Stone warns this could be the busiest time you’ve seen in years. “A key focus for Summer would be improving your speed, so I would highly recommend that not only do you choose the latest innovative waxing products, but you also learn speed waxing techniques. This way you can work fast and efficiently, reduce your treatment times and get more hairy bodies booked in.” Lisa also says it’s time to think about expanding your services: “Maybe add intimate waxing to your menu or encourage holiday packages; for instance you could offer underarm waxes as an add-on for anyone booking a leg wax, or add on a toe wax to a pedicure service. If you don’t already offer services to male clients, then now is the time for smooth backs and chests!” Now you know the trends, it’s time to ensure you’ve got the techniques nailed! NAILS

THE NAIL TRENDS WE’RE LOVING FOR

Metta Francis is an award-winning nail tech who knows her trends. Here she shares her go-to pedicure process.

SUMMER!

The Perfect Pedicure

Soaking feet as the first step of a pedicure will not only relax the feet, but it also helps to soften any hard skin and cuticles, making removal easier. Top tip

In the summer months, slightly cooler water can be used for a more refreshing foot soak – great for reviving tired feet! After soaking, dry feet and trim and file toe nails. Always cut nails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails. Then apply cuticle remover and callus softener; leave for a few minutes to activate before removing the cuticle, dead skin and smoothing away any hard skin.

Salon System nail expert Julie-Anne Lariviére shares the steps for her Abstract Leaves design using the new GELLUX Free Spirit shades… Step 1

Prepare nails by pushing back cuticles, trimming excess, shaping the free edge, and buffing the nail plate with a white block. Dust well and wipe thoroughly with GELLUX Nail+File Spray. Apply GELLUX Fast Bond, let dry for 30 seconds then apply one coat of GELLUX Cover Pink Base, cure for 60 seconds in between layers. Step 2

OPI

Dry feet so they are slightly damp and massage a foot scrub into the feet and lower legs using circular motions, focusing on the heels and cuticle area.

This season it’s all about bright and bold looks with a few surprises thrown in; think pastel tones with a dash of neon and easy hacks to create geometric patterns. Check out our step by steps and let us know how you get on over on Instagram @capitalhair / @capitalhairireland.

OPI #NailBoss Dani Bailey shares two looks that are all about mixing it up!

LOOK 1: PAINTERLY PASTELS For this really quick and simple, yet effective design I used OPI GelColor shades from the Spring ‘22 Xbox collection: Heart and Con-Soul, Racing for Pinks, Trading Paints, Can’t CTRL Me and The Grass is Always Greener.

Top tip

Apply booties or wrap feet in towels for five minutes for a really hydrating mask. Rinse off and dry feet before performing a foot/leg massage using a moisturising massage lotion. Top tip

Apply a rich oil to the lotion for extra slip and hydration. Cleanse toe nails and apply polish or gel polish and finish the treatment with cuticle oil and a refreshing spray. Metta’s Summer forecast

Purples, all the neons, pick ‘n’ mix designs and bright coloured tips will be popular this Summer, as will a perfectly manicured and glossy finish! Oh, and we’ll continue to see clients adorning their fingers with lots of rings and accessories. @nailsbymets

Using a liner brush, apply random wavy patches using GELLUX Go with The Flow on the side of the pinky, index fingers and thumb. Then add patches on the centre tip of the middle and ring fingers using GELLUX Free Spirit and GELLUX Be A-Maize-ing shades. Cure for 30 seconds. Step 3

With a fine liner dipped in GELLUX Maple Dreams Come True, paint the stem on the middle and ring fingers. Cure.

Step 1 On a base of white polish, scatter dots of the colours around, in no particular order.

Step 4

Dip again in GELLUX Maple Dreams Come True and create the leaves, then cure.

Step 2 Before curing, simply blend the colours with an ombre brush, using light downward strokes and cleaning the brush in between. Step 3 When you’re happy with the results,

Dani’s top tip

to see the brand new gel liners

“Don’t be afraid to play with pigments! They’re so versatile; when mixed with a base coat they make the most beautiful neon shades and if you mix with white they create gorgeous pastels – so they’re a great money-saver as you can create multiple new colours.” @nailsbydanibailey

Lived-in blondes… Summer’s not just about bold and fresh tones; there’s also a trend towards sultry, lived-in, warmer tones, says Coral Jade. “Clients are ditching the icy look and going for creamy and sun-kissed blondes. Money pieces and dimension are perfect for lived-in and low maintenance blondes and my favourite aftercare range for all my blondes has to be the Schwarzkopf Professional Blondme range. It has everything from lightweight shampoos and conditioners to more nourishing products for hair that’s really in need of moisture.” @coraljadehairandbeauty

Barb Mahony of Do My Hair, Leicester agrees, saying that lived-in blondes are all about that beachy vibe. “Lived-in colour is so hot for Summer ‘22. From beach babe face-framing, sun-kissed subtle highlights to a sultry California chic, the thing that ties them together is that we’re still loving natural roots – whether it’s through a colour melt or leaving the root area on a Cali blonde. This not only gives dimension to the overall look but means the upkeep is more manageable. 23

Lisa Carter is a real bleach devotee who’s excited to give clients that lived-in look. “As we move into summer 22, the first Summer in a few years where we finally feel more free, I’m noticing that clients are looking for bright blondes but without the upkeep of dark roots. Thus, the lived-in effect is going to be bigger than ever. We’ll see minimalist foiling techniques on the top of every educator’s pin tail, the brightness of the money piece and a few strategically placed foils for added dimension. Less time in the salon chair and without the maintenance of an appointment every 6 weeks, this means our clients must do more at home to keep their hair looking the picture of health. “For blonde homecare I’ll always recommend multi-tasking treatments, so advise on products that offer heat protection, 24

“It’s very much about what they do at home so be sure to encourage your clients to purchase professional hair products; the ingredients really do help to protect and keep colour looking fresher for longer. Plus if they’re going to be using heated appliances, always, always tell them to use a heat protector!”

A pastel option While blonde is always in, you also need to think about those clients who want their blonde with a side of pretty pastels, says Safy Burton of Aylesbury.

“Summer is my favourite season as clients are always excited to try something new when it comes to colour; right now I’m seeing them really lean into blush pink, soft apricot and periwinkle purple. These muted pastels are such a pretty complement to blonde hair, giving subtle flashes of colour that add a unique, creative feel.

@thecrowningstylistrsh

Tina Hollis of T2 Hair & Beauty in Kent says less is more come the Summer months…

“One thing I really focus on is my clients having a professional homecare regime; it’s vital when it comes to keeping colour looking and feeling fresh and amazing in between appointments. I would also recommend a hair masque once a week to give the hair some extra TLC.”

“I always encourage clients to think ahead when it comes to big blonde work; we’ll start in April and May so that by the time June, July and August roll around it’s more about maintenance work and not so much heavy lifting. The sun is so strong – it’s stronger than any products we use – and while people think about their skin getting tanned they often forget the effect it’s having on their hair! “Many of my clients come in for balayage or foil work, so when the Summer months come along I’ll focus on baby lights or face-framing techniques. “My top product suggestions for bleach clients to use at home would focus on ingredients that nourish and strengthen, so look out for ingredients such as soy protein. For an extra bit of hair love I always advise my clients to purchase a replenishing mask to use once a week and make it part of their routine.”

“From fishtail to Dutch, French to accent; there are so many options to choose from, and there’s something to suit everyone. The beauty with braids is that you can really make them unique, simply by adding a ribbon or piece of fabric through the braid, or decorating them with diamantes, pearls or even glitter for those wanting something a bit more OTT!”

“Ponytails are very low maintenance and can be worn a variety of different ways and last for long periods of time. Depending on the vision of the client and the outfits they have planned, the ponytail could be a very glamorous and bold moment or it could be more relaxed and boho; you really can tailor this look to work with any theme. Depending on the style of ponytail chosen, it can also be accessorised with the addition of jewels, glitter or anything the client wishes. With festivals, anything goes!”

“Festivals are such a colourful, free environment where people can truly embrace their individuality, and choosing a brighter hair colour can complete the look,” says Pulp Riot Artist Christabel Legrand. “For shorter hair I think a key trend will be buzzcuts teamed with pink and neon tones, even with some imprinted patterns. For longer hair we are seeing extreme panels of colour, with big chunky sections or hidden panels being big trends.

Festival season is back and while the fashion has changed a lot, the hair and beauty looks still scream fun and experimentation! Check out what the pros are predicting for Summer ’22.

Sheree Thompson says ponytails offer the ultimate solution that ticks all the boxes.

Stylist Anna Stubbs says: “Bubble braids are such a fun look and I love changing the elastics to neon colours – it’s just a really easy way to give your clients a fun festival vibe. I also think space buns are a great alternative; they’re super easy to create and you can add in extra hair or even throw glitter on top for maximum impact.”

UP OR DOWN? When it comes to festival hair it’s all about long-lasting style that makes an impact and keeps hair out of the way. For West Sussex hairdresser Lisa Carter, this season’s braids are throwing it back to ‘90s. “We’re seeing more 90’s vibes on the catwalk and it’s not before long the Y2K trends will come right alongside it. We’re seeing a move from the perfectly coiffured beach and glamour waves to a more natural, carefree bending of the hair. “ghd has just launched a new thin wand and I am obsessed! For my clients it’s great for enhancing the natural texture of curly hair, but I also love it for myself as it allows me to live my Carrie Bradshaw hair dreams.”

Rianna Henry @theblowdryartist

“The tools I always find myself reaching for are from ghd, especially when it comes to my brides – and myself! “I love that ghd tools work on every hair type from thin and fine hair, to thick, coily hair and how you’re able to give a complete transformation or just touch up naturally curly hair.”

@samanthacusicklondon

“My favourite curler by far is my Haito Straightener! It’s a great multipurpose styling tool that creates amazing curls on every kind and length of hair. A real must have for any stylist’s kit bag.” Coral Jade @coraljadehairandbeauty

Anna Stubbs @annastubbshair

“The curling tong has firmly become my go-to hot tool for creating waves in the hair. I like one with a longer length barrel as it means I can easily wrap longer hair around in one go. Also, go for one that has a temperature setting, so you can opt for a lower temperature for clients with finer hair and a slightly higher temperature for thicker, more coarse hair. My recommendation on any hot tool would be to keep it at around 180° as a maximum to minimise damage to the hair.”

Rianna Henry

“A waving iron is a Summer must-have hot tool. It’s an easy way to create effortless beach waves that last for days. My favourite hairdryer has to be the ghd Air Professional Hairdryer. I love the innovative technology that helps us achieve a voluminous and shiny result without spending a long time trying to get there!” “I am very much a ghd fan and I use the straighteners every single day, on clients, on shoots, for my award entries and when creating content. The straighteners are super easy to use, but can also be used to curl, create waves and also create different shapes within the hair. Heating to 185 degrees, they deliver the most incredible results and I honestly couldn’t live without them.” Darrel Starkey @darrelstarkey90

Lisa Carter @thecrowningstylistrsh

“My go-to will always be a styler with ceramic plates; fantastic not only for curling, but also waving, flicking and smoothing. It’s the perfect tool for stylist and client due to its ease and speed.”
