PROFILE FROM MODELLING TO HOME MAKEOVERS For Australia’s first Miss Universe Kerry Wells renovations are like makeup for houses, turning them into something amazing where they’d once looked pretty ordinary. Crowned in Puerto Rico as a 20 year old in 1972, Kerry started modelling after she was plucked off Hay Street as a teenager, sparking a successful career that took her around the world. On the catwalk at a time when everyone did their own hair and makeup, Kerry unleashed the artistic side she brings to her design service today: a talent for creating useable spaces by altering floor plans to suit modern living. At school when girls weren’t able to study technical drawing or woodwork - pre-requisites to study architecture at university - it’s with immense satisfaction that Kerry now specialises in home design. Often called in to help with decisions of whether to stay, go or bowl over a property, she said big picture planning was essential to help guide next steps. “The first thing I do is a fairly extensive interview with people as to how they live their lives and how their current configuration is inhibiting that to the extent that they would like to enjoy their house more. Sometimes it’s just a couple of tricky little moves.” Working with an online program to develop 3D imaging, Kerry was able to reveal a property’s potential within days, delivering an efficient use of space and prioritising sight lines. “If you’re buying a new house and you’ve got two or three choices, or you’ve fallen in love with one but just can’t possibly see how it’s going to be what you want, I can give you an idea of what you’ll get out of it in-between two open for inspections,” she said. Working with couples, Kerry said it was often a fine line to resolve two

diverse approaches, with one usually favouring the most efficient, lowercost build while the other preferred larger gestures with a more significant financial outlay. “I’m always juggling between what they want and what they think they want to spend, which is always different for a couple, to come up with something that’s going to suit everyone for their budget,” she said. Sometimes that was as simple as deciding how long a couple planned to spend in a home. For one project her clients could see themselves in the property for the next 10 years so a larger spend complemented their objectives (they now love it so much they want to stay forever!). Others, however, may have felt a place was right for their younger families but knew they’d have to move down the track, resulting in smaller tweaks that provided a solution for the time being.
“I nearly always end up doing a new kitchen,” Kerry said. “Most of these places have generally not got a good kitchen or someone has renovated the house and left the kitchen in totally the wrong spot. In this case, I normally turn that room into a bedroom and move the kitchen to a much better location. Consequently I’ve come to specialise in kitchen design.” For particular problem areas such as low ceilings, often the solution lay in a particular kind of cornice and the way it was painted. “You can also do little lift up sections if you need to,” Kerry said. As for righting the architectural wrongs of previous decades, Kerry said she often preferred to leave a home’s provenance where possible, whilst giving it a contemporary flair. “If it’s been done in a way that was fabulous for the building in those days, like sometimes you come across 1960s and 70s properties that have got amazing built-in furniture, if it’s still in good condition I would be very reluctant for that to be taken out.” Of course, if a client truly hated any of these features, Kerry wouldn’t hesitate to remove them. “It’s very much a collaborative process and really getting to the heart of the matter of what will make you happy as a human being and as a family living in this space, because you spend a lot of time in it. I’m a true

This has always been an amazing day – filled with community spirit and family activities, with all fundraising profits invested back into West Leederville Primary P&C initiatives, education programmes and infrastructure. The proceeds of this year’s event will be going toward building a new outdoor playspace for the students and community to use and enjoy for years to come. This year, the event has been rebranded to show greater recognition of the activities and the community spirit that the school is aiming for – so the 2018 event will be known as the WLPS Colour Carnival Fete. Sometimes primary school fetes get a bad wrap with parents thinking it they will be the same old, same old. Not this year! The date is set for Sunday, November 18th 2018 from 10am-4pm (check out the website or Facebook) so mark your calendars and clear your schedules because it’ll be an entire day of fun for all ages.
The best part of the Colour Carnival is that the children from each class all the way from the four-year-old kindy kids to the big year 6s have been involved with the planning and implementation of the stalls and activities. It’s given them a real sense of ownership over the event. What better way of showing your community support for the children’s hard work than to come out with your friends and family for the day? There will be a selection of wares for you to browse and choose from amongst the 50+ stalls: Quirky and Inspirational phrases, Cookies in a Jar, beautiful Hand Scrubs… to name just a few. There are some excellent bakers making cakes and slices for the cake stall. Don’t forget the silent auction where you can snag some goodies for yourself or a loved one. You may even spot the Big Man of the season himself so don’t forget to have your Christmas list ready. And, should you feel a bit peckish, there is the Tuck Shop with a vast array of food to choose from: chicken satay or dim sum or paella or… The list goes on and on. After all that eating and shopping make sure to check out the hourly events on the WLPS Center Stage. You could try your hand in a relay or even a watermelon eating contest. There will be limited EFTPOS services for large purchases so make sure to stop by the ATM on the way or walk across Cambridge Street to the nearest ATM so you don’t miss out on any tasty treats or handmade creations.
There are so many great public transport routes that will drop you no more than a hop, skip and a jump away from West Leederville Primary School that you can leave the car at home. Come along and see what treasures you will unearth at this local and community event. RENTAL REVIEW SUPPLY SLIDES AS DEMAND SHOOTS UP Finally, some welcome news for landlords: after a tough few years where property investors have been forced to lower their rents and their expectations, Perth´s rental market appears to be turning a corner. For a few months now, we´ve been experiencing a shift in supply and demand. This week, new data from REIWA has confirmed a 25% drop in rental listings, with around 7,500 properties available across Perth - down from more than 10,000 this time last year. REIWA reports that the rental market is "showing promising signs of improvement, with vacancy rates now... firmly below 3-year averages." We´re actively making the most of these shifting market conditions in order to achieve the

best possible results for our clients. In the last month we have held 172 open homes and private inspections, mostly after hours and the on weekends to suit prospective tenants. With over 300 tenants attending our inspections, we leased 41 properties during August, with multiple applications received on several properties.
