TRANSPORTATION GUIDE
TRANSPORTATION OVERVIEW
The purpose of this guide is to help members of the International Service Team understand the basics of the WSJ Shuttle System and how the shuttles can help transport you to where you need to be. Let’s start with a statement of the obvious: The Summit Bechtel Reserve does NOT have a mass transportation system that you would see in world-class cities. There are simply too many challenges. The mountains of West Virginia make road construction and transportation infrastructure difficult, and the short duration of the jamboree makes it impractical. Even if cost were no object, there would not be a paved superhighway through the center of the Summit, as there is a desire to maintain the natural environment. Development has been intentionally limited. While it might seem like it would be nice to double the number of busses on the routes, that comes at a significant economic cost and also would cause overcrowding of the already overtaxed infrastructure. Additionally, it might be nice to pickup and deliver all staff members directly from the door of their tent to their work location. But, with 50,000 people walking around, with most looking down at the WSJ app on their phone, there are a lot of places where it is just simply not safe to allow vehicles. Priority has been placed on the safety of people who are walking in pedestrian zones and vehicle use is limited to vehicle zones. You could say, “This stinks! I’m going to yell at the bus driver if he’s late, make a scene, and I’m not going to follow the rules.” If you do, you will likely make the entire transportation system work less smoothly for everyone, as well as making yourself miserable. If you are ever faced with transportation challenges, you might want to say to yourself, “Hey, this is not perfect. But I understand the challenges of running a major transportation system for two weeks in the middle of the West Virginia woods, and this sure beats walking the entire distance to my work site!”
THE SUMMIT WAS DESIGNED WITH WALKING AS THE PRIMARY MODE OF TRANSPORTATION. We know it’s not realistic to expect staff to deliver program activities all day and then walk ten miles, so shuttle transportation is being provided as a supplemental service to reduce travel time. With the challenges that face us, we all need to work together if we want the shuttle system to work smoothly.

MORNING & EVENING “COMMUTER” SHUTTLES
These shuttles operate in the morning to transport staff from Ephesus (Echo Basecamp) to a stop that is closer to their program areas. In the evening they reverse direction to bring staff from the designated bus stop near their work locations back to Echo. Each member of the International Service Team (IST) and Jamboree Planning Team (JPT), and others who have shuttle privileges, will be given a waterproof fabric wrist band that corresponds to the route color that will shuttle you to your assigned work location. The bus driver will only allow you to board the bus if you are wearing the appropriately colored wrist band. Some people may receive from their service lead two wrist bands that correspond to their varying job duties. If, for example, you will be working at The Rocks some days and Boulder Cove on others, you may be given both an orange (Adventure Valley Shuttle) and a yellow (Summit Center Shuttle) wrist band. Participants and staff members without a wrist band will not be allowed to ride the shuttles, even as a “guest” of someone with a wrist band. The bus stops will be marked with appropriate signage that states the name of the shuttle route. The color of the signage will correspond to the color of your wrist band. Please note that bus drivers will not pick up or discharge passengers anywhere except the designated bus stops. The schedules on the following pages show the time that the first bus will load in the morning at the Echo Transit Center. As soon as that bus leaves, the second bus will begin loading. Buses will leave periodically (the frequency depends on the number of buses on that route) until the last bus loads and leaves at the time listed as “AM Last Bus.” Generally, busses will be loading for about an hour. PLEASE NOTE: The first buses of every route must be full when they depart in order to accomodate everyone assigned to that same commuter shuttle route. If everyone in your area decides to catch the last bus, there will be a problem and you may be forced to walk. The same is true for the evening return shuttles—the first buses of the return shuttles must be full. If the first buses leave half empty and 200 people try to squeeze onto the last bus…well, about 150 of you will be walking. Discuss this with the others in your work team and make sure there is a designated group who rides the early buses. Service leads are asked to assign bus shifts within your teams to ensure that the first buses are full.
The route maps and scheduled times are published in a later section of this guide.

MORNING & EVENING
“COMMUTER” SHUTTLE ROUTES These “commuter” shuttles are for IST/EIS to get from the Echo Basecamp to their work location each day and are not the same as the looping shuttles that may operate with the same color. Many of these shuttles require a colored wrist band for permission to ride. Commuter shuttle wrist bands will be provided by service leads for their assigned staff members to ride the appropriate shuttle to the assigned work site.

PARTICIPANT LOOPING SHUTTLES There are three additional loop shuttles that run continuously all day. International Service Team (IST) members are allowed to ride these shuttles but will not be given preference over participants. All three shuttles stop at the Jacks West Transit Hub making it possible to transfer to the other shuttles. In general, the loop shuttles start after staff have been delivered to their program areas and cease operation prior to the staff being returned to Echo. Therefore, they are not an alternative to the “commuter” shuttles. However, it does provide a daytime transportation alternative.
ADVENTURE VALLEY ORANGE ROUTE
The Orange Looping Shuttle has stops at the Jacks West Transit Hub, The Big Zip Landing, The Rocks, Low Gear, and the Ropes.
SUMMIT CENTER YELLOW ROUTE
The Yellow Looping Shuttle has stops at the Jacks West Transit Hub, Top of Echo, and Foxtrot.
THRASHER MOUNTAIN RED ROUTE
The Red Looping Shuttle has stops at the Jacks West Transit Hub, The Park, The Bows, The Barrels, and The Pools.
JACKS WEST TRANSIT HUB Use Jacks West to transfer from the Adventure Valley, Summit Center and Thrasher Mountain routes. The Jacks West Transit Hub allows you to easily go from one end of the Summit Bechtel Reserve to the other.

TRANSPORTATION INFORMATION SPECIAL SHUTTLES There are a number of other shuttles that will be running throughout the WSJ that do not impact the majority of staff members, so they will not be detailed here. This includes shuttles for visitors, vendors, staff and IST tours, and special events. Please remember to be respectful. Visitor’s shuttles are for visitors and vendor’s shuttles are for vendors—IST cannot board or ride on them. If your group will be using a special shuttle, you will be instructed by your leads when and where you need to go to board your special shuttle.
FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER We know the roads are bumpy and that there will be delays. So smile. Relax. Take regular showers and wear deodorant! Tell the bus driver that you appreciate the long hours she has worked. Tell each other a few jokes, and remember… riding the shuttle system is a privilege, and it sure beats walking the whole way to your work location!
