It’s Gonna Be Fabulous!

I am so pleased that you will participate in this life changing event.

I know that you will have a BLAST! Give yourself a shout out for taking time to celebrate yourself and the other women in the room.

We are women and women generally like fashion, “girly” things like cosmetics and fragrances and those things that make us feel “beautiful”.

I hope that we all want to look and feel our best, but I also hope that we want to BE our best---“Inside and Out.” This event brings the right ingredients together to improve on your life with a focus on both your “outer” and “inner” appearance. There is no one definition of beauty--it is not a certain weight, a style, a haircut or other superficial attributes. I believe that all women are or have the potential to be beautiful! There is a glow that comes with self confidence, with empowerment and with a “knowing” that you are moving in your purpose; that is true beauty.

Look around the room; you see the beauty of womanhood. It is my goal that you feel and look your best and that you leave energized and committed to a healthier life. It is also my goal that you laugh, have fun and give yourself a great big HUG! I also want you to Win, Win, and Win! Make sure that you check out “The Vault” and our general raffle items.

I’ve dedicated my life to empowering people, particularly women, and trying to push them to the next level without being “preachy” or boring.

Sharon Denise Allison-Ottey, MD

The Physician/The Health Educator/The Host Sharon Denise Allison-Ottey, MD is an energetic and engaging speaker, author, health educator/ physician and health strategist/consultant. Dr. Allison-Ottey serves as Executive Director and Director of Health and Community Initiatives of The COSHAR Foundation. The foundation is a 501 c 3 organization focused on impacting the health of the world, one community at a time. Under her leadership, the foundation has expanded its presence and impact with innovative programs that have touched millions of lives. Dr. AllisonOttey completed a three year residency program in Internal Medicine (Adult Medicine) at Union Memorial Hospital. It was during her residency training that she developed a keen interest in the elderly and subsequently completed an additional two year fellowship in Geriatric Medicine (Adults over 65) at the same institution. She received her medical degree from East Carolina University School of Medicine. Dr. Allison-Ottey is a proud alumna of North Carolina Central University where she earned dual degrees in Biology and Chemistry with minors in Physics, African American History and English with honors.

Dr. Allison-Ottey is an avid medical researcher with numerous publications and presentations. She was named the American Geriatric Society’s 1999 Investigator of the Year in recognition of her pioneering work in AIDS in the Elderly and was one of the first in the world to publish on this topic.

Throughout her career she’s been involved actively with biomedical research and has served as a Scientific Consultant in Neurobehavioral Toxicology to the United States Environmental Protection Agency. Additionally, she has been engaged in several research collaborations that include the John Hopkins Urban Health Institute, the Gallup Organization and other academic, private, and public organizations. Her current research interests include Health Literacy, Patient/Physician Communication, the Role of Spirituality in Medical Outcomes, Direct to Consumer Marketing’s effect on Physicians and Patients, and Patient Adherence/Compliance with Medical Treatment.

Dr. Allison-Ottey is a nationally recognized lecturer/speaker for healthcare professionals. She addresses various topics which include but are not limited to: health literacy, women’s health, health disparities and cultural competency, the role of faith based organizations in healthcare, direct to consumer advertisements and health in an aging population. She provides invaluable insight and guidance to the numerous commissions, advisory boards and committees on which she serves. She is a consultant for several Fortune 500 companies and is also frequently invited to give expert testimony/advice to government and other organizations. Dr. Allison-Ottey is recognized for her unique and articulate views on public health policy. She is an advocate for improved healthcare for all and for the elimination of health disparities based on gender, race and/or socioeconomic status. Further, she’s viewed by many as a tireless champion for expanded access to healthcare for the elderly. In recognition for her commitment to health education and reduction in health disparities among minority populations and women; she was honored by Aetna Inc. and featured in the 25th Anniversary Edition of its African American History Calendar.

Dr. Sharon Allison-Ottey is active with numerous medical, political and civic organizations. She has served on the Board of Trustees of the National Medical Association (NMA) and as Chair of the Council on the Concerns of Women Physicians. She was a founding board member of the Partnership for Clear Health Communications which focused on improving health literacy in the United States. Dr. Allison-Ottey’s professional affiliations include the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, American Geriatric Society, International AIDS Society and numerous other organizations.

Dr. Allison-Ottey has received many awards and citations from organizations and the community; however one of the most notable is being the youngest to ever receive the Scroll of Merit of the NMA in 2002. This award is the highest award of the association and Dr. Allison-Ottey was cited for her service to the organization, research and commitment to the health education of the nation. Additionally, she is the first female to be awarded the title Chairman Emeritus of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA). . In 2006 she received the Council Award from the Council on the Concerns of Women Physicians in recognition for her significant achievements in medicine and contributions to issues of women’s health. Dr. AllisonOttey has been further humbled by the National Library of Medicine/ American Medical Woman’s Association’s designation as a Local Legend in Medicine and her inclusion in the national exhibit entitled: Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians. She continues to receive national and state recognition for her work and passion and in 2010, 2008 and 2004; Dr. Allison-Ottey was named to the Top 100 Women in Maryland. In 2011, she received the additional honor of being named to the Top 100 Women in Maryland’s Circle of Excellence in recognition of her consistent strides in her profession and her commitment to mentoring.

Dr. Allison-Ottey has appeared on Black Entertainment Television (BET) as well as other local and national television programs. She co-hosted a popular radio program for several years and is a frequent guest on nationally syndicated as well as regional/local radio programs across the country.

Dr. Allison-Ottey is the monthly writer of Gospel Today magazine’s, Health in Action column. She’s been quoted and interviewed by several print publications including Redbook, Essence, Heart and Soul, Jet, Ebony, USA Today, Black Enterprise, The Wall Street Journal and numerous other media outlets. Because of the colorful and “down to earth” manner in which she addresses health, relationships and offers motivation; Dr. Allison-Ottey is a well-recognized and requested speaker for conferences, universities/schools, churches, corporations, community groups and a host of other outlets.

One of Dr. Allison-Ottey’s passions is writing and she introduced a new genre to the world of fiction, “fiction with a purpose” with her first novel, “All I Ever Did Was Love a Man” with the sequel, “My Breaking Heart” to be released in 2011. She also wrote a nonfiction/self-help book entitled; “Is That Fried Chicken Wing Worth It?” which was released in 2009. Additionally, in 2009, the full greeting card line, “Cards by Dr. Sharon” was launched; they are indeed “Cards with a Purpose.”

The many faces of this phenomenal entertainer include that of a gifted trumpeteer and singer. Rod was a featured trumpet soloist for the highly acclaimed NCCU Jazz Band which performed with the Count Basie Orchestra, Brandford Marsalis and other notable musicians. Further, he is a powerful motivational speaker and emcee with a unique ability to captivate his audience.

In response to requests from fans nationwide, Rod released his first video, “The Best of Rod of God Comedy”, featuring a compilation of his signature comedy material in 2006. In 2008 Rod recorded his first Live DVD, “Rod of God Comedy Live…Laughter Is Legal”, which features a full-length comedy, singing and trumpet-playing performance.

Sandra Gibson

Motivational Speaker, Recording Artist & Mrs. Black North Carolina 2011 Sandra Dubose-Gibson is a true testament to the power of faith and the infinite potential of the human spirit in everyone. Diagnosed at 25, she was faced with Alopecia Universalis, an incurable auto immune disease that resulted in her complete hair loss. Forced into a compelling journey of self discovery and self acceptance, she has emerged a living example that true beauty comes from within. She is the founder of the Alopecia Community of the Triangle support group in Raleigh N.C. A songstress and professional entertainer, she has transformed her pain into passion with the creation of Dubose Entertainment. On March 26, 2011, Sandra also was crowned 2011 Mrs. Black North Carolina. She is North Carolina’s first bald beauty queen ever, enabling her to travel across the state promoting Alopecia Areata awareness and healthy self esteem in girls and women of all ages.

Syrreta Smith Zumba Fitness

Syreeta Smith, a married mom of four, dance has always been my passion. From taking tap and jazz dance classes as a youth to being a background dancer for main stream artists, dance has always been both exciting and enjoyable to Syreeta. Zumba Fitness is a perfect combination for her and she loves teaching it ! Syreeta says that when she discovered that she could dance, have fun AND stay in shape too, she KNEW this was for her. She is the co-author of the book, “Real Relationship Devotionals” which she wrote with her husband and another couple.

Victoria Holloway Barbosa, MD, MPH, MBA The Nation’s Expert Dermatologist

Dr. Victoria Holloway Barbosa is a board-certified physician, researcher and educator with a unique set of experiences and talents that bridge the fields of dermatology, science and the cosmetics industry.

Through Dermal Insights, Dr. Barbosa has advised several cosmetics companies and suppliers in the areas of business strategy, research and development, and market trends. This work stems naturally from her seven years as a cosmetics industry executive. As a former Vice President in Research & Development at L’Oreal, Dr. Barbosa built and directed the L’Oreal Institute for Ethnic Hair & Skin Research. In this one-of-a-kind facility, she led a team of physicists, chemists and biologists conducting basic science research to discover the distinguishing properties of the hair and skin of people of African descent.

Dr. Barbosa received her bachelor’s degree in biology from Harvard University and her medical degree cum laude from Yale University School of Medicine, where she was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society. She completed an internship in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a dermatology residency at Yale, where she also served as chief resident. Dr. Barbosa then attended Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, where she received a Master of Public Health degree, and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Most recently, she completed her Master of Business Administration degree in Kellogg’s executive MBA program.

Dr. Barbosa’s work in the cosmetics industry is built on her foundation as a dermatologist. Millennium Park Dermatology is a cutting edge, innovative dermatology practice where Dr. Victoria Holloway Barbosa provides state of the art care to her private patients and is the physician/ owner. She is an Assistant Professor in the Rush University Department of Dermatology, where she sees patients and teaches residents and medical students. Dr. Barbosa enjoys treating diseases of the hair, skin and nails in patients of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. In addition to general dermatology, her areas of expertise include hair disorders and managing disease in skin of color. She is a founding board member of the Skin of Color Society and a frequent lecturer at dermatology meetings in the U.S. and around the world, including the American Academy of Dermatology, the European Association of Dermatology and Venereology, and the National Medical Association Dermatology Section. She has published in the areas of ethnic hair and skin characterization, cosmetic products and clinical practice guidelines.

Dedicated to promoting education, science and health, Dr. Barbosa serves on the Board of Trustees of Dillard University, on the Board of Directors of National Medical Fellowships, and as an External Advisory Board member to Delaware State University’s HBCU-UP program. She is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Committee on Opportunities in Science and is a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Disparities. She has previously served on the Board of Trustees of the Dermatology Foundation, an organization that supports dermatological research.

As both a respected authority and a gifted communicator, Dr. Barbosa has appeared on numerous local and national radio and television broadcasts.

She has also been quoted in dozens of magazines and newspapers in the United States and around the world, including multiple quotes in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun Times and Essence Magazine, to name a few. She is a frequently requested keynote speaker at industry meetings and on university campuses.

Dr. Barbosa has repeatedly been honored for her work in science. Kym Lee, Celebrity Makeup Artist The Artist Extraordinaire

Kym Lee is a native Washingtonian who graduated from Bowie State University with honors. Upon graduation, Kym attended Georgetown Law School in hopes of being a top entertainment lawyer. While in law school, she worked at her family owned salon in her spare time. It was there that she discovered her passion was not law, but beauty. While in pursuit of her dream she landed a makeup position at B.E.T. where she’s been for the past 15 years. Kym’s makeup artistry has graced the pages of Essence, Black Enterprise, People, Glamour, and Sister 2 Sister Magazines. She is also one of the Lead Makeup Artist for the Tom Joyner Sky Show, BET HONORS, BET’s CENTRIC (Soul Train Awards), the annual BET Awards, and the Washington Redskins Cheerleaders.

Helping youth and young adults is her mission as she volunteers at Covenant House and Hanna’s House on a consistent basis. Min. The People’s Fat Loss Coach Robert Ferguson, MS, CN is a nationally recognized voice of weight loss through healthy living, a motivational speaker, and physical conditioning and nutrition specialist who’s been recognized as The People’s Fat Loss Coach. A doctoral candidate in sports psychology, he holds certifications in personal training and performance nutrition. Mac Arthur James, “Mac”, is committed to meeting his clients where they are and pushing them to their next level of fitness. Mac works with clients from all walks of life.
