Dual Enrollment

What is Dual Enrollment? • Dual Enrollment is a means for outstanding high school students to enroll in college classes, either on the Calhoun Decatur or Huntsville campus or at the high school, and receive both high school and college credit.

Who is eligible to participate?

Eligible students are those in the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade who have a “B� average in their completed high school courses and who have the written approval of both the high school principal and the local superintendent of education. Some school systems restrict participation to 11th and 12th grade students.

Dual enrollment students must meet all prerequisite requirements for any course. To ensure correct placement, students must take the Calhoun Placement Examination (COMPASS) and/or have scored minimum levels on the ACT in English and Mathematics.

Calhoun Community College has Dual Enrollment programs on high school campuses throughout our service area. A wide range of courses are available through Dual Enrollment including foreign languages, mathematics, science, or social science; any occupational/technical courses; or any other courses agreed upon by the school system and the college

What is the cost of Dual Enrollment? • Costs for college courses are dependent upon the course credit hours. Most courses at Calhoun Community College are 3-4 semester hours, and the cost for 1credit hour (tuition &fees) is $95.Thus, a normal 3 semester hour course would cost $285.

A normal 4 semester hour course would cost $380.

Calhoun is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and there is rarely any problem with courses transferring. Students are encouraged to check with their prospective college/university to make sure that the Dual Enrollment course or courses are in their program of study.

Calhoun strongly urges students to check with their college or university if it is out of state or a private institution since program requirements may vary.

Will Dual Enrollment classes transfer? • Calhoun is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and there is rarely any problem with courses transferring. In 1999 the Calhoun Dual Enrollment program included 41 students in three classes on two high school campuses.

During the fall 2008 semester approximately 691 students in 48 classes on 17 high school campuses, as well as in classrooms on the Calhoun Decatur and Huntsville campuses, participated in the program.

Dual Enrollment on the high school campus • Calhoun can bring a class to the high school campus and utilize one of the college’s full-time or part-time instructors in that class or the college can use one of the high school’s own faculty members to teach the class providing he/she meets Calhoun and SACS credentialing requirements. Calhoun will pay the faculty member if he/she agrees to work extra hours by teaching the class during a planning period or working after the regular school day.

Calhoun can also offer a dual enrollment class taught by a high school faculty member as part of his/her regular load and Calhoun will pay the school system based on the number of students registered for the Dual Enrollment class.

If the high school has existing AP courses in which faculty members meet Calhoun/SACS credentialing requirements, those courses may double as dual enrollment classes. Some of the students in the course could choose dual enrollment credit while others could continue with AP credit. The curriculum for the two plans is the same. The high school, rather than the instructor, is paid based on the number of students choosing the dual enrollment option in the class.
