estled amidst the cerulean waters of the Atlantic, Bermuda is not just a picturesque island nation but now also the cradle of a groundbreaking genetic odyssey. CariGenetics, the world's first genetic research company focusing on the unique DNA of Caribbean ancestry, has chosen this idyllic setting as its base. This bold initiative marks a significant step in unraveling the complex genetic history of the Caribbean people, a tapestry woven through centuries of diverse human experiences.

The Visionary

At the helm of CariGenetics stands its visionary founder, Dr. Carika Weldon, MRSB, FIBMS. A Bermudian by birth, Dr. Weldon brings not only her extensive expertise in biochemistry and molecular genetics but also a profound understanding of the cultural and historical fabric of the Caribbean. Her academic journey, marked by excellence

and pioneering research, culminates in this ambitious venture.

Dr. Weldon's leadership is a beacon of inspiration, particularly for young scientists in Bermuda and the Caribbean. Her commitment to inclusivity in genetic research and dedication to uncovering the mysteries of Caribbean ancestry stem from a deep-seated belief in science as a tool for empowerment and social change. Under her guidance, CariGenetics is not just a company; it is a movement, redefining the landscape of genetic research with a focus on diversity, equity, and representation. Named the 2023 Bermudian of the year, Dr. Weldon’s passion is doing research “for the Caribbean, by the Caribbean, IN the Caribbean!

CariGenetics stands at the intersection of cutting-edge science and cultural heritage. Its mission is twofold: to delve into the genetic roots of the Caribbean population, which has been underrepresented in genetic studies, and to use this knowledge to advance personalized medicine and historical

understanding. This endeavor is not just about mapping genes; it's about reclaiming identity and heritage for a region whose history is as rich as it is turbulent.

Bridging Gaps in Genetic Research

The Caribbean's diverse population, a blend of Indigenous, African, European, and Asian ancestries, presents a unique genetic profile. Historically, genetic research has been skewed towards European populations, leaving a significant gap in our understanding of genetic diversity. CariGenetics aims to bridge this gap, providing insights into the genetic predispositions and health profiles of Caribbean descendants.

Ethical Considerations and Community Engagement

CariGenetics operates in a realm fraught with ethical considerations. Issues of privacy, consent, and the potential misuse of genetic data are paramount. Recognizing this, the company has

instituted robust ethical guidelines and engages continuously with local communities, ensuring that their work is transparent, respectful, and inclusive.

Implications for Personalized Medicine

The implications of CariGenetics' research are vast, particularly in the field of personalized medicine. Understanding the genetic variations specific to Caribbean ancestry can lead to more effective treatments for this demographic, addressing health disparities that have long been overlooked. Diseases that disproportionately affect the Caribbean population can be studied more effectively, leading to targeted therapies and improved healthcare outcomes.

illustrating how innovation thrives when rooted in cultural respect and identity. This approach, championed by founder Dr. Weldon and her team, positions CariGenetics not only as a pioneer in genetic research but also as a community-centric organization that values the interconnectedness of progress and cultural heritage.

A Voyage into the Genetic Horizon

A Catalyst for Regional Pride and Global

CariGenetics is more than a scientific venture; it is a source of regional pride. It empowers the people of the Caribbean and their descendants to connect with their ancestry on a genetic level. Internationally, it positions Bermuda and the Caribbean as significant contributors to the global scientific community, breaking new ground in genetic research.

Beyond the Science

As CariGenetics recently marked its first anniversary, the company notably extended its impact beyond the realm of genetic research, fostering deep community connections in the Caribbean and Bermuda. By sponsoring significant cultural events like the Caribbean Music Awards and Bermuda's Cup Match, CariGenetics demonstrated a commitment to celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the region.

These sponsorships reflect the company's understanding of the integral relationship between science, culture, and community,

Dr. Weldon is currently working on a new research project - The "Get in the Ring" Caribbean Breast Cancer Whole Genome Pilot Study- which is pioneering new ways to understand breast cancer in women of Caribbean descent. She has a dynamic team that underscores her dedication to scientific discovery and contributes to the success of the business.

CariGenetics, with its innovative spirit and commitment to diversity and inclusion, is not just exploring the genetic frontiers of Caribbean ancestry. It is rewriting the narrative of a people, contributing to the global understanding of human genetics, and opening new avenues in healthcare. As this voyage into the genetic horizon progresses, the world watches with anticipation, recognizing that the discoveries made here have the potential to resonate far beyond the turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
