HISTORY WITH EARN YOUR LEISURE.

1. What inspired you to start Earn Your Leisure, and how has your Jamaican heritage shaped your approach to business and entrepreneurship?

I realized certain things weren’t taught inside schools, financial literacy and financial education being one of them so the inspiration comes from recognizing the need to provide resources to our community in a way

that is beneficial, relatable, and informative. My parents being immigrants from Jamaica and experiencing challenges related to their lack of knowledge surrounding financial literacy definitely played a role in my desire to ensure that the information was available for everyone, especially the underserved because it is so critical to their future success.

2. As a successful entrepreneur and podcast host, what advice do you have for young Caribbean people looking to start their own businesses or pursue their passions?

Well one joke we always hear about our Caribbean people is that they have “treee” (three) jobs lol. I think that speaks to our ability to understand the need for multiple

streams of income. My advice would be to start where they are, use what they have, and do what they can. A lot of people will wait for the “perfect time” to start a business which often times never come. It’s important to take imperfect actions to get your business off the ground. We need to create businesses that are scalable.

3. How do you stay connected to your Caribbean roots, and how do you think the Caribbean community can support each other in achieving success?

Well for starters I enjoy my ackee, saltfish, and callaloo for breakfast daily HA. But truthfully, I make sure to visit the Caribbean, specifically Jamaica every year and not the resorts. I’m in town with the people, sharing information, books, clothing, any resource I can to provide information. Most recently I visited the country where my wife’s family is from and was amazed by the self reliance. I think the way we come together build community, structure and in turn build business.

4. What are some common misconceptions about entrepreneurship that you'd like to dispel, especially for young people in the Caribbean?

I think entrepreneurship is portrayed, especially in social media, as glamorous, everyone is successful and it doesn’t require sacrifice. These things can’t be further from the truth. Majority of businesses fail within their first year, most entrepreneurs are solo-preneurs meaning that they are the only employee in there company which in turn becomes extremely time consuming and stressful.

5. What's your favorite part about hosting the Earn Your Leisure podcast, and how do you choose your guests and topics?

I’m always learning and evolving. That’s the best part. There is something to learn from all of our guests so just as much as our audience is learning, we are too. And we are able to apply to information, and report back. We choose are guests based on the value add that the guest can bring to our audience. It’s always interesting to see new ideas, new career paths and avenues that were to us in the

6. How do you balance your business and personal life, and what self-care practices do you recommend for others?

Its tough, because I do travel often and have a lot of busy days but I find every window in my schedule to be present for my family, and when possible my family travels with me which I’m grateful for the opportunity to show them the world and share some of the experiences I’m fortunate to partake in with them. Also I have an amazing wife who is understanding of the task at hand in terms of my role with Earn Your Leisure and makes sure that I take breaks and resets. it

easy makes sure I take breaks and reset.

7. What's next for Earn Your Leisure, and how do you see your platform continuing to empower and uplift the Caribbean community?

We’re currently working on curriculum to put inside of schools in New York City. We want to give financial education to our most vulnerable population at the earliest stages of the educational journey. We also are very focused on bridging business opportunities on the continent of Africa and shaping a new narrative of what business looks like across the diaspora.

8. We now have a Caribbean Music Award that took place last year Labor Day weekend , What are your thoughts on the representation of Caribbean culture in mainstream media and the acceptance of Caribbean artists and events by companies and sponsors? Do you feel that there has been progress, and what more needs to be done to promote diversity and inclusion?

I think it’s important we have more representation outside of the realms of sports and ent. We know that we excel in sports and music but we need to make a conscious effort to ensure that we highlight people that are successful in the world of business . Like Michael Lee-Chin or Paula Kerr Jarrett. The more we display these prominent people in business the more inspirational and aspirational for the Caribbean culture.

Your struggles do not define you

HEALTH AND WELLNESSNURTURING MENTAL WELL-BEING

Understanding Autism in the Caribbean

In the vibrant tapestry of the Caribbean, discussions about mental health are finally gaining momentum. However, amidst these conversations, one crucial aspect often overlooked is the intersection of mental health and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Understanding and addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by individuals with autism is paramount for fostering inclusivity and support within our communities. Autism, a developmental disorder characterized by challenges in social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviours, affects individuals across all cultures and backgrounds. It's imperative to recognize that autism is not a defect or a flaw but simply a different way of experiencing the world. One of the primary

mental health concerns for individuals with autism is anxiety. The unpredictability of social situations, sensory sensitivities, and difficulty in understanding social cues can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and overwhelm. In the Caribbean context, where societal norms often emphasize socialization, individuals with autism may face heightened stressors. Creating environments that accommodate their unique needs and providing support networks can significantly alleviate these challenges. Depression is another prevalent mental health issue among individuals with autism, often stemming from feelings of isolation, rejection, and a sense of not fitting in. In a region where community and family ties are deeply valued, the sense of belonging can be particularly crucial. Embracing neurodiversity within our

communities and fostering acceptance can mitigate the risk of depression and promote mental well-being for individuals with autism.

Access to mental health services is significant. It's imperative for healthcare systems and community organizations to prioritize the development of accessible and culturally sensitive mental health services tailored to the needs of individuals with autism. By challenging stigmas, fostering acceptance, and providing accessible resources, we can create inclusive communities where everyone, regardless of neurodiversity, can thrive mentally and emotionally. Let's embark on this journey towards a more compassionate and inclusive Caribbean for all.

Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month: A Mosaic of Culture, History and Vibrancy!

June is a month of jubilation and reflection for the Caribbean diaspora as we celebrate Caribbean American Heritage Month. This month-long observance is not just a nod to the past but a vibrant showcase of the cultural tapestry that the Caribbean brings to the global stage. From the enchanting rhythms of calypso and reggae to the tantalizing flavors of jerk chicken and roti, Caribbean Heritage Month is a time to honor the rich and diverse contributions of Caribbean Americans.

A Rich Tapestry of History

The Caribbean is a melting pot of cultures, with a history as diverse as its people. The region's heritage is shaped by the influences of indigenous peoples, African ancestors, European colonizers, and Asian immigrants. This confluence of

cultures has birthed unique traditions, languages, and artistic expressions that resonate across the globe.

The celebration of Caribbean Heritage Month began with the efforts of the Institute of Caribbean Studies (ICS) and was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress in 2006. The initiative aims to highlight the significant role that Caribbean Americans have played in the history and culture of the United States, from Alexander Hamilton, a founding father born in Nevis, to contemporary figures like Rihanna and Colin Powell.

Cultural Contributions

The Caribbean's cultural influence is evident in many facets of American life. Music is perhaps the most vibrant example, with genres like reggae, calypso, soca, and reggaeton enjoying international acclaim. Bob Marley, the iconic reggae musician, not only put Jamaican music on the world map but

also became a global symbol of resistance and peace.

Cuisine is another significant aspect of Caribbean heritage that has permeated American culture. The flavors of the Caribbean are as diverse as its people, with each island offering its own culinary delights. From the spicy jerk chicken of Jamaica to the savory callaloo of Trinidad and Tobago, Caribbean cuisine is a delightful explosion of tastes and aromas. This month, try your hand at some traditional recipes or visit a local Caribbean restaurant to savor these unique dishes.

Celebrating Through Festivals and Events

Caribbean Heritage Month is marked by a plethora of events that celebrate the region's vibrant culture. Parades, festivals, music concerts, and food fairs are held across the United States, bringing people together to revel in the lively spirit of the

Caribbean. These events are not just for those of Caribbean descent but are open invitations for everyone to experience and appreciate the region's rich cultural heritage.

The Caribbean Impact on American Life

The impact of Caribbean Americans extends beyond culture and into various sectors such as politics, sports, and academia. Shirley Chisholm, the first African American woman elected to the U.S. Congress, was of Barbadian and Guyanese descent. Her legacy of breaking barriers continues to inspire many.

In sports, Caribbean athletes like Usain Bolt and Derek Jeter have become household names, dominating their fields and setting new standards of excellence. In academia, scholars of Caribbean origin have made groundbreaking contributions, enriching the intellectual landscape of the United States.

Embracing the Future

As we celebrate Caribbean Heritage Month, it's essential to look towards the future and acknowledge the evolving contributions of Caribbean Americans. The younger generation is continuing the legacy, bringing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to various domains. This month, let's not only celebrate the past and present achievements but also support and encourage the future trailblazers of the Caribbean diaspora.

Caribbean Heritage Month is more than a celebration; it's a recognition of the enduring legacy and vibrant contributions of Caribbean Americans. It's a time to educate, appreciate, and participate in the rich cultural mosaic that the Caribbean brings to the world. Whether you're enjoying the infectious rhythms of a steel drum band, savoring the spicy tang of a Caribbean dish, or learning about the historical impact of Caribbean figures, take this month as an opportunity to immerse yourself in the dynamic and colorful world of Caribbean heritage.
