Hey #POSHgirls Let’s Celebrate Through Fashion… Still stoked about the theme of our most recent Caribbean POSHgirl POWER Brunch, “Collaboration vs Competition” – and the huge wave of positive energy evoked as a result. For this Summer Sizzle Fashion Issue, I felt it would be remise of me not to further encourage collaboration among us as Caribbean women. So POSHgirls, have you identified your business bestie? If you attended this years’ brunch or read the previous issue of Caribbean POSH, you might still be trying to figure out how to get your collaboration on. It is ok if you are; admittedly, it is not exactly easy and can almost be like finding your ideal mate. However, like love we just can’t give up on it. Someone out there is like-minded, trust worthy, and can complement your business goals. You just need to be open-minded. So you might be asking yourself “what should I do” to propel forward. I like to use fashion to keep positive energy in my space and just have me feeling good. Fashion is something you can have fun with and it allows you to identify with your inner self. Fashion often conditions the mind for the task ahead. It is the whole reason many of us like to shop for a new outfit whenever a special occasion comes up. So on Mondays I tend to wear the latest addition to my wardrobe or an outfit that in that moment defines that “this poshgirl means business”. I like to start my week – feeling ready for the world and fashion does that for me. Your style of dress generates your energy and sets your mood. Aging like fine wine [lol] I have learned to be more and more unapologetic about my ‘posh’ style and I feel all women should as well. My curves are my curves and I am not ashamed. My melanin is sweet as brown sugar so I love to wear prints and tones that are just as sweet. Women have come a long way in the world and should be excited about living in a time where you can get up, get out into the world and be anything you want to be. So why not maintain that momentum by getting all ‘poshed’ up. Now I’m not saying wear sequins to your next management meeting. What I am saying is make the right statement at the right time that is right for your personal brand. Have fashion be your celebration of life, who you are, and who you will become. The etiquettes of fashion helps me celebrate life in ways that have defined me and taken me along the path of becoming. I believe that you too can celebrate your life and set your pace to becoming. u THE JADE ROLLER MASSAGER makes such a cute gift! Every POSHgirl deserves an at home spa experience making this little device a must. Benefits include enhanced skin elasticity and toning of the skin.

u To get that natural looking eyebrow, I can’t go without my EXPRESSO EYESHADOW and SMALL ANGLE BRUSH from MAC COSMETICS.

u On my natural hair journey, I’ve been obsessing with oils. Came across WILD GROWTH HAIR OIL and so far this product does what it says. I’ve seen the growth but the only drawback is the scent isn’t the best.

t When it comes to gym time the new FIJI WATER SPORTS BOTTLE CAP comes in handy. My absolute favourite bottled water! For added health benefits I drop in a HALIBORANGE VITAMIN C which I fine helps keep my immune up and skin looking its best.

It’s summer once more, which means you can bet we’ll be spending every moment possible at the beach. Of course, there’s no better time to refresh your bikini collection, and we’ve got the perfect places to start shopping! Of course we stan a local business— why not support the incredible talent that comes right out of the Caribbean? Read on for our favorite independent swimwear designers, with a focus on companies that are created close to home.

GLAMOUR GLAMOUR BY TRICIA CAMPBELL KEVA BY KºEVA J Keva J is a pretty well known and loved name in the swimwear marketplace. Known for their unique and show-stopping bikinis, the brand also produces creatively designed swim cover-ups. As they stem from a multi-cultural background, the brand focuses on blending pieces and coordinating designs, with a mix of colors, textures and shapes. We particularly love the Aria monokini, a perfect marriage of eclectic prints and colors.

A former Caribbean Posh covergirl and plus-size supermodeling sensation, Tricia Campbell is a multitalented phenomenon, from Montego Bay, Jamaica. And who better to start a fabulous swimwear company focused on pieces that celebrate plus sized women? Tricia saw a space in the market, and dove in headfirst. Her line is bold and bright, unafraid of saturated colors and fun patterns. One of our fav pieces is “Flirty Diva,” the one piece that mimics a bikini, featuring a sheer mesh paneling and flattering lines. Love!

TRÈFLE DESIGNS Born in the British Virgin Islands, Kristin Frazer is familiar with Caribbean luxury. She started her company, Trèfle Designs, in 2008, and has not stopped expanding her creative child since. Started as a swimwear collection, Trèfle has also done children’s swim, home design, and ready-to-wear. However, swimwear is still Kristin’s specialty— and she’s fabulous at it! Their new collection, “A Girl Called Rose” features a mix of sporty and romantic cuts. We love the palette of aqua and peach tones, and are totally enamored with the color-blocked Michelle suit, shown above.

LULI FAMA

MAUNA LOA Mauna Loa is a Venezuelan company, inspired by the countryside of the beautiful Caribbean. Created by Andreina Oliver Godoy, Designer and Director of Mauna Loa, the pieces are all handmade in Venezuela. We love the clean lines and fun, nature inspired prints. Their one-pieces are particularly cute, like the Ambar suit, shown here in Indigo Tie Dye. So fun!

Lourdes Hanimian is a Cuban born designer and entrepreneur, founder of Luli Fama swimwear. With tons of gorgeous designs to choose from, it’s tough to choose a favorite— the range includes everything from Brazilian to High-Rise, plus cover ups and sarongs in matching prints. They also have a pretty fabulous Retro suit collection; echoing era-bases beauties like the 90s Baywatch crew and the 40s pinup model. Another incredible bonus? Many of the pieces are reversible— like getting two new bikinis in one!

Why not add a little mama nature to your look? Jamaican fine jewelry designer Anna Ruth Henriques makes truly unique and memorable pieces that blend elegant craftsmanship with stunning natural form. Her works often feature motifs of both the sun, insects, and spider webs, made primarily in gold, pearls, and precious stones. The organic feel of the carved and imperfect gold is what makes these pieces so striking. Any earring in this style is sure to take your outfit to the next level.

Summer’s here, and whether we’re heading to the beach or the office, sunshine makes us want to celebrate. There’s no better time to try out a few fun and felicitous accessory trends. Whether you tie on a new head wrap, pop in a pair of statement earrings or take a chicly styled bag out for a spin, you’ll be feeling that summer Caribbean magic. Consider this your guide to this summer’s must-have outfit enhancers!

Aya Jamaica is a local designer who specializes in beautiful bags and specialty jewelry, all lovingly handmade to-order. While we love their Thigh Packs (the next evolution from fanny packs perhaps?) what we can’t help but want for ourselves are their versatile Sack Bags. Polished enough for brunch but also casual enough for everyday use, you’ll find yourself coming to this style all season long. Known-and-loved Dominican fashion designer Jenny Polanco can’t stop cranking out the hits, and we can’t stop loving them- particularly these structural Rattan summer bags. While woven handbags have been gaining steam as a full-blown style trend for a few years now, there’s something so perfect about this designer’s iteration. The trapezoid shape is one that other designers have overlooked, but it lends a simplistic, ladylike polish to the natural material. The shoulder straps are a nice option, but the woven handles and leather detailing are what bring this version of the woven it-bag to the next level.

If you want to beat the heat but (obviously) don’t want to sacrifice style, a head wrap is a classic and gorgeous way to look fierce without being hot. We adore the saturated jewel tones that The Cassiopeia Collection offers on it’s collection of handmade headwraps. The solid colors are an easy addition to any bold outfit (just check out this peachtoned piece paired with a printed set from Always Leid!), while the printed wraps add the perfect flair to any simple ‘fit. With the full collection designed and produced in Trinidad and Tobago, what’s not to love? Ghodesswear is a design team from Guyana that specializes in—and absolutely slays— beaded pieces. They don’t do demure. We love bright beads for summer, and Ghodess has managed to create some truly one-of-a-kind works of wearable bead art. If you’re not quite ready for a beaded bra top, their Egyptian-style collar necklaces give off major Cleopatra vibes and come in a range of sizes (depending on the amount of statement you want your statement piece to make). Your go-to summer necklace is sorted.

The third annual

Wearable Art Gala kicked off this June, and our favorite stars showed up in full force and fierceness. Created by Tina Knowles-Lawson, the Gala raises funds to support WACO, the actress and philanthropist’s Los Angeles based non-profit performing arts center. Creativity is encouraged, and with this year’s theme of “A Journey to the Pride Lands,” Afrocentric looks ruled the red carpet.

A nod to Knowles-Lawson’s daughter Beyonce’s starring role as Nala in Disney’s new Lion King remake, the theme lead to a lot of ‘fits inspired by our favorite stars of the Savanna. Most recognizably, Beyonce herself wore a gold sequined jumpsuit with a floorlength gold cape, and a lion’s face embroidered squarely in the middle of her chest- completed by a mane of feathers. The custom Georges Hobeika look was over-the top glam, and definitely fit the category of “wearable art,” channeling her inner Nala to a T. Bey’s mini-me, Blue Ivy, also went all-out for the event in a billowing bold yellow gown. The pint-sized celeb gave a nod to traditional African art with her embroidered collar, trim and headband, and had a sun-goddess style golden headpiece. Memorably, last year Blue Ivy bid $19K during the event’s art auction, and this year placed an 11K bid for a diamond ring. She’s certainly supporting the arts at a young age!

turned heads in an entirely black layered tulle gown, featuring a lengthy train, a leather corset, a lot of leg, and a hyper-chic braidedto-high-pony hairstyle. Chloe and Halle also embodied the duality of Simba and Scar- the sisters both wore high-necked sheer gowns with feather accents, however they wore contrasting color schemes of gold and black. Although the fashion on display was stunning, the real cause was arts education, and the event delivered— over $2 million dollars was raised for Where Art Can Occur.

Other memorable looks included Tiffany Haddish, Michelle Williams and Chloe & Halle. Haddish, the evening’s Host, was in a head-to-toe ensemble of red and black feathers, featuring a widebrimmed structured feather hat. Michelle Williams could have been the Scar to Bey’s Nala; the singer Image courtesy of Beyonce via Instagram

Jennifer Lopez is always a Red Carpet vision- known for her figure-hugging gowns with sky-high slits and heels, J-Lo came as what could be called a camp version of herself. She’s got all of her typical hypersexy boxes checked, but brings it to a nearly ridiculous (but totally on-theme) level by quite literally dripping with jewels. A flapperstyle headpiece accented her plunging Versace gown, and a show stopping 65.32-carat purple sapphire from Harry Winston topped the cake. But the sweetest part of Lopez’s ensemble was her new fiancée Alex Rodriguez, dressed in a pink hue perfectly complimentary to the massive sapphire.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas have been Met Gala favorites since they debuted their relationship on the carpet in 2017. This year the newlyweds brought the extra- Priyanka wore a custom Dior Haute Couture gown featuring an elaborate metallic birdcage bodice and layers of ombre feathers, accessorizing with a matching cape, sequined leggings and arm warmers, and a sky-high crown. If you thought Nick’s outfit was too simple in comparison to qualify as camp, consider this: he was sporting a casual 38.30-carats of diamonds set in 18k white gold on a Chopard ring, watch and pave necklace. Those details certainly add up!

CARIBBEAN POSH • THE FASHION ISSUE 2017

Zendaya took fairytale moment to a whole new level with her Cinderella-inspired look. Her custom grey Tommy Hilfiger gown was gorgeous on its own; but the camp came in when her date and stylist Law Roach- dressed as the Fairy Godmother- waived his magic wand, causing the ensemble to light up blue. Although they aren’t a romantic couple, Roach has been dressing Zendaya for years, and this was his first Met Gala, so he was the perfect partner to help pull of this pink-carpet magic. Talk about a dreamy duo!

Created largely by drag queens of color in the 80s and 90s, Camp is to be fabulously over-the-top, overtly loud and bold, and fearlessly fun. Camp has a dash of irony and satire, and a lot of exuberance that toes the line of tacky. It is the absolute antithesis of Coco Chanel’s famous mantra to “remove one accessory before leaving the house.” For these couples, their best accessory was their date- and we are so glad they didn’t leave them at home!

Alicia Keys and her husband Swizz Beats were one of the most powerful pairings on the pink carpet. According to Susan Sontag’s Notes on “Camp” the theme can be nature inspired, but never actually natural. Alicia and Swizz were dressed in coordinating Carolina Herrera by Wes Gordon. Swizz looked dapper in plush emerald green velvet, while Alicia’s seafoam gown trailed behind her, an unnatural glittering tidal pool of sequins and tulle. Mother Nature herself would be proud.

As fashion’s biggest night of the year, celebrities and designers alike pull out all of the stops for their looks, and come together in one crowded, immaculately decorated space to form a fairytale mosh-pit of creative costuming. The lucky attendees base their looks off of their understanding (or misunderstanding) of an annual theme, and this year was the year to go overboard; as the theme was CAMP. More is more is MORE, honey.

Kylie Jenner is a Camp champ- her regular bright hair colors and larger-than life beauty looks are right in line with the evening’s theme. It’s no surprise that her gown- a custom collaboration with Donatella Versace herself- was one of the standout looks of the evening. Kylie’s date and boyfriend Travis Scott also managed to nail the theme but from a completely different angle, looking like a character straight out of a war videogame in men’s Dior. Travis’s dark but daring look was a welcome foil to Kylie’s pastel daydream.

When it comes to denim, jeans never go out of style. These wardrobe staples are cool and comfortable and work for nearly every occasion. While the cuts and waistlines change from season to season, this year you can’t go wrong with too much denim. We’re seeing lots of variations of the denim on denim look, so have some fun with it.

Wider, more relaxed fits are also making their mark this season. Embrace pinch-waist jeans and try ankle crops with frayed hemlines to make your legs look longer. Oversized denim jackets and jumpsuits are also a staple of our favorite celebrities closets. Here are our picks for 2019 denim trends that every woman can wear.

DOUBLE DENIM The key to looking effortless in double denim is not to hold back. Denim tops, oversized shirts, and jackets can be worn with jeans or denim skirts. The good news about this trend is that you can make it your own. Rihanna dresses up her denim top and distressed skirt with sky-high nude pumps while Ciara opts for a more casual look with a denim jacket, cuffed distressed jeans, and combat boots. Play it safe by sticking to the same wash or go bold by playing with different hues of blue.

OVERSIZED DENIM JACKETS An oversized jacket is a thing this season; it’s a versatile transitional piece to have in your wardrobe. Yara Shahidi does this look right by styling her jacket with matching cuffed jeans, and white stilettos. Wear an oversized denim jacket with your favorite festival look or pair it with shorts to the beach. Urban Outfitters carries one that has a cool girl finish, it’s no wonder it’s one of the brand’s top-rated items.

Every woman can nail this look with the Dad denim jacket available at TOPSHOP for $90. This classic safari jacket from Urban Outfitters is a toprated item on the site. Built from seamed true-blue denim in a slim fit with a buttonfront closure and self-tie belt at the waist this jacket has a cool-girl denim finish. Shop this look at Urban Outfitters for $39.99.

HEM DETAILS

PINCH-WAIST JEANS

While your jeans will be sitting high this season, opt for a little something extra at the hem. Mixed denim adds an unexpected twist to this look. Look for styles with a darker wash at the bottom to stand out.

This season, when it comes to your waistline think the higher, the better. Step back in time with these 90s vintage pinch-waist jeans. Style these jeans with a graphic T-shirt, and ultra-high ankle boots. Take note, because these are the most stylish cropped flares right now.

You can also try a tie ankle jean that is cropped right above your ankle. The frayed unfinished hem is still big this season. This is great news if you are petite since you won’t have to worry about hemming your jeans. Zara’s Premium Skinny Multidamage jeans have a washed effect with front ripped detail and a frayed hem. Available for $49.90 at Zara.

The slim fit jeans are figure flattering due to its high waist and cropped ankle. A best seller on Revolve, Agolde’s PinchWaist High Rise Kick, speaks to fashion savvy millennials, with cuts that are celebrated by both men and women. The line also speaks to the individuality and confidence of a generation of creativity, comfort, and a California-cool way of living. The 12.5-inch rise is meant to sit at your waist, and the cut makes your legs look longer. Scoop up Agolde’s Pinch-Waist HIgh Rise Kick on Revolve for $168, while they last.

OVERALLS AND JUMPSUITS This season it’s all about embracing all in ones for an instantly chic outfit. We love black denim dungarees, but you can also opt for bright colors like red or pinstripes to make a statement. Overalls are also easy to style. Wear long or short denim overalls with your favorite Converse. When it comes to jumpsuits, Jennifer Lopez prefers a low-cut denim jumpsuit with three-quarter sleeves and flared pants. This look is perfect for curvy figures and a summer trend you won’t want to miss. Keep this look simple with wedges or flats. We like this rigid denim jumpsuit from Boyish featured in a slouchy silhouette. Available at Free People for $188. You’re all set with a cropped top and black denim dungarees with pockets. Shop this pair on TopShop for $95. Whether you’re looking to revamp your style or want to try something new, these are easy and versatile looks for all body types. What’s your favorite denim trend this season?

Over the course of two years, Natalie Howe has transformed the world of wearable art in Trinidad and Tobago through her brand ‘DÉ-COLLE-TÉ’ which specializes in fashion accessories made predominantly from printed fabric. She describes the brand as ‘the coalescence of a love for fashion and the arts with the crisp aesthetic of the Afro-Caribbean identity. It is the expression of a woman who is bold and unafraid to stand out, who is free to express herself effortlessly through her wardrobe choices and inspires others to extract the beauty of everything this life has to offer.’ Can I get an amen for women empowerment? This description not only perfectly fits the brand but those who interact with Natalie will know that it is evidently synonymous with her aura. DÉ-COLLE-TÉ is unique because of its distinct voice. It caters to the upliftment of the modern women in today’s social climate and the ever-changing paradigm of fashion. Additionally, it prides itself on providing affordable, local and handmade fabric accessories throughout the year and not just seasonally. DÉ-COLLE-TÉ’s mission to inspire and connect with clients is constantly fuelled by Natalie’s innovative and creative attitude. Furthermore, the support of other entrepreneurs is essential as it provides opportunities for networking, sharing knowledge, collaborating and inspiring each other. The joys of entrepreneurship When asked to share her positive experiences as an entrepreneur, Natalie stated that what resonates with her the most is when people identify with the essence of the brand, its message and its mission and more so when this is achieved without her input. She added, “The positive feedback from customers who have become clients who have grown to become friends has been so invaluable that it basically gives me the strength to carry on. I have seen persons purchase with their very last dollar just as their method of showing support. I have experienced

retailers offering discounts for future purchases on items at my very first encounter with them. The brand has transcended barriers of race, gender, ethnicity and religious persuasion. All this to say, God has been good to me thus far and the journey has more great times than bad. I have learnt to enjoy the journey. Sometimes the path is rocky but it still leads me to my vision for success.” Along with these benefits, Natalie embraces feedback from customers calling it ‘the seed of innovation’ that allows her to be open to change as an entrepreneur and keep up with market trends. All work and some play As the powerhouse of the business, one can’t help but wonder how Natalie gets it all done. She mentioned, “Being an entrepreneur is by far the most challenging thing I have consistently done in my life thus far. It requires extremely long hours working in the business and on the business, usually without consistent support. You are basically on your own.” The following are some of the ways in which Natalie maintains a healthy work-life balance: Always finding ways to stay motivated Sticking to her first passion of health and fitness. She’s an active dragon boat athlete and captain of the Trailblazers Dragon Boat Team. Involvement in adventure races, marathons, novelty events both competitively and recreationally Productive use of time which allows the ability to stay focused and prioritize activities Natalie values holistic growth and is also a certified Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Group Fitness Instructor and recently attained her Precision Nutrition – Coach and National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) Personal Trainer Certifications.

Upcoming events for DÉ-COLLE-TÉ The major components fuelling DÉ-COLLE-TÉ’s growth and its ability to connect with customers continues to be appearances at various events, pop up shops and craft markets. See a list below for what’s next on the agenda: •  July 20th, 2019 - Planting Seeds Entrepreneur Market Movie Towne Invader’s Bay •  July 27th, 2019 - Modest Minds Fashion Show (Featuring Naballah Chi) – Paradise Pointe Banquet Hall •  July 28th – 31st, August 1st, 2019 – Emancipation Village – Queen’s Park Savannah •  August 4th, 2019 - Red Runway Fashion Show / Designer Pop Up – Trinity/ Bishops College East •  August 16th - 25th 2019 - CARIFESTA Market - Queen’s Park Savannah

As Natalie continues to pursue her vision for DÉ-COLLE-TÉ, her God-fearing nature keeps her grounded and she is a firm believer that everything happens in this life not by circumstance or coincidence, but by design. So for those who continue to be inspired by female entrepreneurs and need an extra push, Natalie’s advice is, “Stay connected to the vision, stay grounded in faith and understand that failure is a huge part of the learning process. If challenges do come, it’s necessary to embrace them because I am a firm believer that growth comes when you are pushed to the edge of your comfort zone.” DÉ-COLLE-TÉ’s products can be found in Trinidad at I Live 4 Gems and Unique Scents of Style and in Tobago at Total Luxury.

Luu herself wore a stunning skin-tight sparkly purple jumpsuit, topped off with a dramatic oversized printed jacket. Styled by Jason Rembert, the Gucci look was topped off with Versace shoes and a Black Sea NYC clutch. A perfect match to MoAna Luu’s energy level (and look of the evening) was fashion fav June Ambrose. Never one to tone

down the drama, June wore a shin-length blue Gucci dress, encrusted with jewels at the neckline met by orange stripes and puff sleeves. She kept the fun going with a similarly shiny head wrap, spikey pearl-and-gold Gucci stilettos, and a Grace Coddington for Louis Vuitton cat-shaped handbag. Also notable looks were those worn by Michaela Angelad, Claire Sulmers and (of course) Dapper Dan. Activist and writer (and Gucci Change Makers Council member) Michaela Angelad looked striking in a floral one-piece jumpsuit by independent Harlem designer Johnnie Lewter. Sulmers, Editor-InChief of Fashion Bomb Daily, also sported a custom look, hers by Painted Swagg. The sleek yellow skirt-suit featured a cut out-top detail and asymmetric sleeve. Dapper Dan was very much at home, looking every bit the Gucci model in a gold brocade vest, worn over a short-sleeved white silk shirt. A key founder of the Gucci Changemakers program for diversity & inclusion, Dapper Dan maintained his signature sunglasses-on look, continuing to casually make fashion history. One of the most exciting Fashion events this summer stateside was the Essence Festival. A combination of music, film, lectures and art exhibitions, the whole weekend was a culmination and celebration of Black creative culture. The crew at Essence kicked off the party in the best way possible: with brand-new Essence Fashion House hosting a dinner in tandem with Gucci, highlighting their new Changemakers program. Many fashion insiders attended, toasting to “bringing people together from every continent,” as lead by co-host MoAna Luu, Essence’s Chief Content & Creative Officer. Of course, the looks at this super-exclusive event did not disappoint.

Naked dresses

have been a full-blown force in the fashion industry for a number of years, popular on runways and supermodels since the early 90s, and notably popularized on the red carpet by Kim Kardashian and her crew in the last decade. Rihanna solidified the trend as one of the most memorable in modern times with her famous, unforgettable 2014 CFDA Awards naked ensemble. But where can we go once everything has already been taken off? Enter the best “naked” dress looks of 2019. These looks are all spins on the “naked” red carpet dress- still sexy, still daring, but with some added creativity to keep the trend fresher than (nothing but) your birthday suit. Jourdan Dunn was chic and sheer for a Maybelline Cosmetics launch party in April of this year. Her “naked” look actually featured a high neck and conservative knee-length hemline. Aside from the shin-grazing tassel trim and metallic glint, this look could almost be demure— on first glance. The gold crochet was in fact almost entirely see-through, featuring a simple black bikini panty and the stunning model au naturel. Dunn completed the look with polished black heels, a full cascade of natural curls and her supermodel smile.

Zoe Kravitz looked radiant for the annual Vanity Fair Golden Globes afterparty this spring. Although she skipped the main event, Kravitz’s look was among the most memorable of the evening, thanks to her arrestingly bare and shockingly sumptuous outfit. Zoe wore a real 18 Karat gold Tiffany & Co bra top designed by Elsa Peretti, which carries a jaw-dropping price tag of $25,000 USD. Her simple Yves Saint Laurent column skirt and evening bag balanced the outfit’s coverage. Winnie Harlow is no stranger to showing skin- the supermodel’s striking Vitiligo is one of her most recognizable and beloved traits. She wore this Ralph & Russo gown on the Cannes red carpet, on her way to attend a film screening. A veil of black mesh enveloped her figure, covered only by a Rorschach-blot of green and black crystals, tastefully encrusted in just the right places. She finished the look with a green belt, matching heels and a pop of purple eye shadow.

Valentino’s Spring 2019 Couture show is always a special, stunning, swooned over spectacle of fashion’s hautest of haute couture, and this year was all the more buzzed about. Of course, we’re talking about Naomi Campbell’s triumphant return to the runway— after 14 years in retirement— to grace us as the show’s coveted closing model. She wore a custom evening gown of black organza and tulle. While this wasn’t a red carpet moment, the world was definitely watching as Naomi confidently hit the runway and proved that nothing has changed except the clothing. Thank you, our timeless fashion fairy godmother.

Kim Kardashian has worn many a naked dress in her day, but this is perhaps her best. For the 2019 Met Gala, where the theme was Camp, Kim was her usual larger-than-life sensual self. She wore the nude dress to end all nude dresses, made of corseted latex matching her skin tone and covered in dripping crystals. The dress was the first design by industry titan Thierry Mugler for his namesake fashion house in over 20 years, bringing Mr. Mugler out of retirement and taking eight months to create. Coupled with her clear heels, slicked hair and oiled skin, Kim was the very vision of Mugler’s concept: a California girl, coming out of the ocean dripping wet and entirely nude. Although we’re sure the naked dress look is here to stay for the time being, it’s tough to imagine how anyone can top Kim and Mugler!

Every year I look forward to New York Fashion Week to seeing the fashion but more importantly the hair and makeup that will slowly make its way to the streets. Here are six makeup looks I am sure we will all be rocking this summer. 1. CUSHNIE

The look is really about this monochromatic, tawny terracotta shade that is all the right places to give the face dimension

3

2. TOM FORD

Shining smoky eyes layering cream shadows over mauve, grey, and plum powder shadows

3. CHRISTIAN SIRIANO

Swarovski-crystal-studded makeup that almost feels like freckles or a birthmark creating a veil like finish

4. ROSA CHA’S 4

More glittery lids, creating “sparked black liner” followed by a layer of makeup adhesive and topped off with Ben Nye loose glitter in Black Diamond

1 5

5. ECKHAUS LATTA Pigments around the eyes in either sporadic painterly smudges or hazy, multicolour masks that stretched across the top half of the models’ faces

6.CHROMAT

Fluorescent eye makeup in a half-moon shape from their brow bones to their cheekbones. Sweep on the shadows with a small, fluffy brush in an elliptical shape. Follow with either a green or an orange line, depending on the colour combo, just below the lower lash line and extending outward

While we love a good ‘fit, no look is complete without the right hairstyle. A mix between functionality and artistry— hairstyling can entirely change the way that an outfit pulls together and reads. Hair has an important place in culture and history, and we’ve seen some major hair moments lately, celebrating the versatility of hair as both fashion statement and sculptural medium. Take June Ambrose’s recent sky-high tousled ponytail. Stylist Ryan Burrell created the look with alternating voluminous poofs, in a style that was polished in the front and rock-chic in the back. It brought her checkered white pantsuit to a totally new level. In a toned-down version of tame-in-the-front and statement making in the back, Kelly Rowland recently hit the town in a braided low-bun that would be just as gorgeous with an office outfit as it is with her cocktail dress and red lip. Her sleek braids tuck into a spiral of sculptural perfection. Speaking of sculptural— up-and-coming actress Storm Reid absolutely rocked this retro bouffant. In a snap shared by the hairstylist Jason Bolden, Reid seamlessly blends eras with a 60s sky-high pouf of hair, 80s colorful circle-drip earrings, and a 70s printed mock-neck blouse.

Photo courtesy of June Ambrose via Instagram

Letitia Wright also took the high-hair look for a spin at the Emmys, wearing lengthy and gorgeous box braids loosely down her back ,with a crown of braids tucked into a neat bun atop her head. To take this look to an Emmys glam-level, Leticia’s hairstylist Ursula Stephen tucked a handful of clear gemstones into the bun, an instant game-changer. Ursula Stephen also happens to be the pro stylist behind another one of our fav recent hair looks— Zendaya in red. The always-stunning celeb went a glowing medium red tone for a recent press trip to London, and Ursula herself shared that the look was a year in the making. They kept the actual hairstyling to a minimum- a sleek straight blowout let her new color do the talking!

soulful tunes with a velvety smooth voice is managed by In.Digg.Nation Collective, record label of reggae star Protoje. Having appeared as a featured guest on tracks by Protoje (“Flight Plans”), Royal Blu (“Believe”) and Koro Fyah (“Got it For You,” “Raggamuffin”) and on mixtapes by Addis Pablo & Equiknoxx Music and Yaadcore, she is now building her own catalog of impressive solo material. “Biggest Fan,” her 2017 debut single, was a tribute to her mother, who despite initially disapproving of her daughter’s career choice ended up becoming her “biggest fan.” Her second single “Gotti Gotti” likewise acknowledges the wisdom of elders, taking her generation’s predilection for greed to task on a vintage reggae riddim. Her third single “Second Chance” taps into the past while revealing a sound that is fresh, new and all her own. The heavy drum and bass on “Second Chance” will be instantly familiar to long-time reggae fans, but Iké gives the rhythm a fresh coat, delivering “a rub-adub love song for the ages” (LargeUp). Passion Weissraved that the track is “the best kind of lovelorn cry. It may sway and groove, but it’s potent in a way that nearly stings.” Iké also features on Protoje’s latest single “Not Another Word” along with Agent Sasco, released April 2019. The single has been featured on Spotify playlists ‘Dancehall Queen’ and ‘Dancehall Official’ as well as on iTunes Reggae A-List, premiering at number 2. Iké’s fourth and latest single “Where I’m Coming From” has her voice sitting on an ultra-modern reggae trap beat as she describes how she’s navigating and championing her way in the music industry.

LILA IKE - THE INTERVIEW By SHERINA RUSSELL-GARCIA

When it comes to producing the finest singers and musicians in the world, Jamaica never disappoints. So it is with the Caribbean nation’s newest gem Lila Ike from cool Manchester. A powerful natural old-soul voice throwback to the magnificent rocking roots, dub reggae era of the 1980’s it is surprising to many fans that she is only nineteen. Using the music as her backdrop, she infuses her militant yet beautiful lilting voice to capture ears, transporting her messages of truth through effortless lyrical talent from her hard-hitting songs so far Second Chance, and Biggest Fan. I got an opportunity to interview the enigmatic Lila as she continues to take her rightful place among the humble re-igniters of Jamaica’s reggae and roots revolutionary music like the great Chronixx, Protoje and Koffee.

You have a unique sound and look. Do you think that that is the main reason fans resonate with you especially those who appreciate Jamaica’s powerful roots reggae message and music?

“I definitely feel like my uniqueness adds to the interest people have in me.” What inspired your look?

“What inspires my look is usually my mood. I dress how I am feeling every day.” Why did you choose your stage name and what does it mean?

“Lila is derived from my actual name Alecia. Ike is a name I adopted. It means “God is powerful”. I chose this name because it represents me and how I see music- Divine.” What drew you to the music?

“I was drawn to music from an early age. I fell in love with different sounds my mom would play around the house.” Who are some of your musical inspirations and why?

“Garnet Silk. Whitney Houston, Lauren Hill, Buju Banton, Sizzler Kolonji are the few that come off the top of my head. They all have different sounds and are amazing performers.”

How important was Protoje in your evolution and continued growth as an artist?

“Protoje is a master mind in this field and most importantly he has vision and happens to also be an amazing friend.” What do you believe makes Second Chance resonate with many of your fans?

Do you believe in giving persons a second chance and why?

“Second chances are definately necessaryeverybody makes mistakes! What inspired the song?

“The song was freestyle and the riddim inspired it.”

“Old fashion love is best love. It’s cute, honest and it’s real.”

Do you think that some women can be quicker than men to jump-ship in relationships and why?

“People in general like to take an extreme way out of things so jumping ship is not just a women thing actually I believe the men are more quick to do so more than us women.” You grew up in cool Manchester. What are some of your happiest memories growing up?

“Happiest moments growing are ones that included going on adventures behind my great -grand mother’s house which had vast greenery and farms which we would raid (my sisters and I). We would never go bored or hungry.” What do you think about the resurgence of roots reggae and being a part of the movement?

“I don’t think reggae went anywhere. I just give thanks that there are conscious musicians doing the same thing within my time and am honoured to be a part of that crowd.” Do you think that the women also have a voice in the movement?

“Women have a voice of course why not? The world is made of men and women and there are different perspectives that are necessary for the work to be done so both women and men have work to do in this time for our sons and daughters.” What is your message through the music to your fans?

“My message is staying afloat in the seat of confusion. Live up and live yourself -positivity!” At heart, are you outspoken or shy?

“I am a mixture of both. I’ll be outspoken within a crowd that gives me a voice and I’ll be shy where I feel I need to guard my energy.” Do you write your own music?

“Yea I do write my own music am not opposed to working with writers though as everyone has a story to tell.” How was your transition from Manchester to Kingston like, and how were able to manage?

“Manchester to Kingston was a life

changing experience. I learned to really survive without my mom lol who was a crucial part of life.” What inspired your song Biggest Fan?

“Biggest Fan was inspired by my mother.” Was your mother unsure about allowing you take the musical route and if so why?

“My mother was not okay with me doing music. She felt I would fall victim to producers who basically would enjoy my company rather than my talent.” Is your Mom your biggest fan, and how did you deal with her early reservations about your career choice?

“My mother is for sure my biggest fan and I just work hard to prove to her that I am capable of being a great artiste and a responsible one. “ What advice for young people to follow their dreams through your song Biggest Fan?

“My advice to young people or even old people is to just follow your dreams. Love it up and live it into being.” What do you love about the dub version of the song?

“I love dub in general. It is vibes music so much more presence and life -enhanced perspective.“ When will you be launching your EP?

“An Ep is definitely coming but for now I am just recording songs with a view to releasing a few singles leading up to the EP release.” Where in the world have you travelled to so far as an artiste, and what are some of your greatest memories so far?

“I have been to United States of America, Continental Europe and England. It’s been lit! Best especially was my first time on tour with Protoje and sharing a stage with him, a dream come through.” Do you consider yourself to be a rebel?

“I am definately a rebel. I don’t like rules especially ones that make no sense and limits people.” What kind of musical legacy would you like to have in the future?

“I would like to have a legacy that is completely responsible for the enhancement in lifestyle, mental ability and responsibilities of young people of this generation.

CARIBBEAN POSH • THE FASHION ISSUE 2017

“The reason Second Chance resonates so much is because of the riddim. It’s familiar and I am also singing a lot on this track compared to other songs I have released. This song also has my very first music video so people get to actually see visually who I am.”

Do you believe in old-fashioned love and why?

Semien Sutton is an aspiring model who came out victorious in the 2019 VI Model of the Year Competition that took place in St. Croix U.S Virgin Islands earlier this year. His appearance in the competition no doubt has already earned him many fans.

BRIEF BACKGROUND

CARIBBEAN POSH

48

Semien was born in St. Maarten; however, he spent only the first seven years of his life there. Subsequently, he moved with his mom and brother to St. Croix. What was to have been a temporary stay, to tend to Semien's uncle who suffered a stroke ended up becoming a permanent one. As such, Semien spent the bulk of his life in St. Croix. Semien’s family mostly resides in Nevis & St. Kitts, where he visits them from time to time. Traveling around, right from his tender age, and experiencing varying cultures and lifestyles has fostered the development of Semien’s unique personality.

In his free time, Semien is known to be engaged in yoga, reading different genres of books, hanging out with people at various carnivals and festivities. He loves connecting with nature and learning new things, but he is wary of flying on the airplane. That is one fear he’s going to have to get over if he wants to work with the world's biggest brands.

HIS CAREER AS A MODEL Having the desire to become a model right from his high school graduation, Semien went to college with the hopes of making it into the industry on his terms. However, he was faced with difficulties and needed to step out of his comfort zone. This caused him to lose interest, until the moment he was passionately begged by a friend to try again.

At this point, mentally grown and willing to step out of his comfort zone, his career took off with his first runway show. He hasn't looked back since. Subsequently, Semien won the VI Model Competition, which was a life-changing experience that helped him connect better with designers and other game-changers in the modeling industry. However, despite connections and fame, Semien has been able to balance a career in modeling with a full-time real estate career. What a man!

WHO INSPIRES SEMIEN Semien, as a model, is inspired by several successful players in the industry. His list comprises the likes of Janeisha John who hails from the same island as his, St. Croix. He also takes pleasure and motivation in the works of Tyson Beckford. According to Semien, Tyson Beckford's energy is intriguing and astounding, as he always ventures into new scopes to enhance his brand. In terms of clothing designs and accessories, the names that pop up are; House of Ettiene from St. Croix and Kym’Asia by Germain Smith from the BVI. On the international scene, Semien would love to work with Louis Vuitton.

SEMIEN’S TAKE ON FASHION Straying away from the quintessential definition of a model, Semien is more inclined toward comfortable and easily worn outfits, such as sweat pants. He believes first in comfort when choosing an outfit and goes for just that. For Semien, style starts with comfort. He believes in the ability of fashion to explicitly depict a person's personality, as this is obvious in a consistent outlook. That is not to say that Semien cannot come up with stunners. He also likes to experiment with colors and patterns.

SEMIEN’S BEAUTY REGIME Having consistently followed through with products and beauty measures, Semien has glowing and radiant skin. Drinking water and consuming fruits are early morning routines that he follows strictly. Semien does this daily until noon. Going into the day, before going about his activities, he moisturizes with various natural products. They include; Raw African Shea Butter, hemp, CDB, and others. As such, he keeps his skin moist and protected from the drying effect of the Florida sun. Semien is of the opinion that beauty starts from the mind, and this affects the way we take care of our body. To boost his mind, he engages in 20 minutes daily meditation sessions, which is followed by an hour of yoga. These exercises and mind engagements help him get through the day smoothly, increasing his daily productivity. This has helped him do away with anger and high stress levels, making worries far from his mind. The end result is an outward positive effect on his skin. As a person who cares so much about his health, he takes detailed cognizance of holistic approaches to maintain his health. It is for this reason that Semien chose the vegan lifestyle. He did this with the belief that a healthy body would help him achieve his modeling dreams. Learning can never be over-emphasized, especially learning from experienced heads in the industry. They have a wealth of knowledge to tap from. As a model, Semien believes in constant self-improvement. According to him, curiosity is vital, and as such, he is always seeking to develop himself, especially by learning from his predecessors in the industry. He might not be where he wants to be, but Semien is well on his way there. His name is definitely one to look out for in the near future. His stunning good looks, confidence, and dedication to self-improvement are the right combination of ingredients for a successful modeling career.

SELF-IMPROVEMENT TIPS FROM SEMIEN

A good head of hair contributes to the feeling of satisfaction that brings peace and joy to a person. Some complain about a receding hairline, loss of hair, stunted hair growth, scalp irritation, and all other issues. All these can be taken care of with the right choice of food. There are lots of nutrients in the food we consume, hence, the need to pay attention to our foods and use it for our own good. Food and fruits can be applied directly to the hair in the right proportion to help it grow.

GUAVA

Guava fruits are amazingly rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. More often than not, hair fall is a direct result of unhealthy scalp conditions. Guava leaves have analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties that have made it a popular ingredient for maintaining scalp health. It is often used to rinse hair in order to treat scalp issues such as dandruff. It is also rich in B Vitamins and Vitamin C, which nourish the follicles and aid hair growth. OATMEAL

Oatmeal is an excellent film former which is great especially for afro-textured, curly kinky hair. Film seals in moisture and provides a barrier from the harsh elements that surrounds us. The film also works to reduce tangled hair. Oatmeal helps your hair to shine. For afro-textured hair types, oatmeal will help your hair to have sheen. Sheen is what happens when curly kinky hair has shine. Imagine hair that just glistens like a diamond all because you fed it some good oatmeal? Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/ ByNnaRCFm5P/

Here are eight foods (and fruits) that help your hair grow:

ALOE VERA

Applying aloe vera to your hair is a very good idea. It forms a protective layer over your hair that keeps it safe from environmental elements and also keeps it consistently hydrated. It can also relieve scalp itchiness and irritation owing to the fact that it has potent anti-pruritic properties. One of the truly amazing benefits of aloe vera for hair is that it can reduce dandruff. This is owing to the fact that it has strong antifungal properties. Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/ ByLCQ4gnCWO/

SALMON

The omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D in salmon are essential for scalp health and to keep your hair hydrated. Salmon is also rich in protein, vitamin B12, and iron. These nutrients improve your scalp health, prevent hair fall by providing nourishment to the follicles, promote hair growth, and prevent your hair from looking lackluster. So, you must consume salmon to take care of your hair. However, if you cannot have salmon frequently, you can have fish oil supplements to prevent hair fall. Incorporating pumpkin seeds into your diet can go a long way in treating your problem with hair loss. This is because the consumption of pumpkin seeds is known to stimulate hair growth, meaning it can help you grow thick and shiny hair. So if you’re worried about the side effects of commercial hair products and other artificial treatments, then look no further. You should, however, consult your doctor or a dietitian before consuming pumpkin seeds or pumpkin seed oil, as you might be allergic to it. For those who are not allergic to it, the oil can help make your scalp healthier, therefore aiding you in your battle against hair loss in the long term.

SOYBEANS

According to Wikipedia, “Soy protein is a protein that is isolated from soybean. It is made from soybean meal that has been dehulled and defatted.” Soy Protein helps in improving hair texture, strengthen it, and repair damaged hair. Consume vegetarian protein powder derived from soy to make your hair look hydrated, shiny, and healthy. Soy extracts have also been shown to reduce another disease causing baldness. Soy seems to be a putative treatment to prevent hair loss, and is less expensive while arguably much safer and healthier than prescription drugs and surgery. EGGS

Egg yolks are particularly nutrient-dense and come packed with biotin, vitamins A, D, E, K and folate. They also contain lecithin. An egg contains selenium, calcium, magnesium, potassium and phosphorous. In addition, eggs on the whole offer iron, copper and zinc, as well as a host of B Vitamins, which are the most essential for hair health. Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin) and B5 (pantothenic acid) are good for hair flexibility, strength, and overall wellness. Biotin or Vitamin B7 is especially essential for hair growth, while folic acid deficiency could cause premature greying. Hence eating eggs can help your hair grow properly. You can also apply it directly to the hair and cover for a few minutes before rinsing off. Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/ ByVCk21geO3/

One benefit avocados offer is preventing hair loss and promoting hair growth. They can also be used to improve the condition of your hair by acting as a moisturizer for dry or damaged hair. Avocados are known for containing the “good” kind of fat. These monounsaturated fatty acids are nutrient-rich and help to develop cells both in and outside of the body, according to the American Heart Association. When you want to restore a shiny look and smooth texture to your hair, an avocado-based deep conditioner is the way to go. It will help to moisturize and strengthen your hair from root to tip.

Stepping into Your Aligned Energy Follow up to: “7 Tips on Setting & Pursuing Your BOLD Goals for the Year”

If your upbringing was anything like mine, you were brought up thinking that it’s normal to struggle. You would have watched your parents, uncles and aunties, and just assumed that everything in life is supposed to be challenging. You have to work hard to make a living, only the strong survive, nothing in life comes easy. Only “people with money” get all the luck. I lived with that mindset well into my adult years. The burdens that I endured during my journey and the emotional baggage that came with it kept me living in a cage of fear. They held be back from thinking that I deserved love, that I could run my own business, that I could increase my earning potential, and most important, they kept me from thinking that I could impact the world. I experienced bullying, depression and anxiety. I spent quite a number of years living in a dark place and asking “Why me?”, “What have I done to deserve all of this?” I was angry with the world and ashamed of myself. I thought the answer to my questions resided outside of me. I went looking to books, videos, podcasts, self-help gurus—you name it and I tried it. But it wasn’t until I realized that I was living out of alignment -this is when my transformation started to unfold. Alignment brings your heart, soul and mind on the same path. It’s when your actions and behavior line up with what you say you really want in life. When you are aligned you trigger the right thoughts and emotions, enabling you to focus and take action on what matters to you the most. Alignment amplifies your vibration, your energy. When you are in full alignment the Universe co-creates with you at lighting speed!

CARIBBEAN POSH

52

An example of being in alignment would be having a positive, self-affirming way of thinking such as “anything is possible”, or “I deserve to experience everything I desire” even though things are not going as planned.

Your positive thoughts become positive actions and your cup starts to overflow with abundance. You become one of the “those people” with all the luck. Now let’s talk about misalignment. Misalignment is a feeling that can stem from doubt, fear, shame, old values, beliefs, thoughts of unworthiness and old tapes from the past that can get in the way of your vibration. Let’s say you need some extra income this month to pay off credit cards. When you are out of alignment, you start giving most of your attention to the “absence” of money. You become focused on being in debt, being broke or needing money. When you think about money, you only think how much of it you don’t have, which only makes you feel bad. With misalignment, whatever it is that you don’t want, trickles more and more into your life—only leaving you feeling even more off track. Since you are thinking about being in debt, the Universe provides—you guessed it, even more debt to come your way. But life doesn’t have to be a struggle. If you find yourself repeating the same negative thoughts and narratives—the kind that we all grew up with—you might be operating from your subconscious brain, aka your “Conditioned/Past Self.” In order to get in alignment, you need to co-create your “Future Self” aka the you who will meet your goals and be confident in knowing you deserve everything you desire. In order to step into your aligned energy—complete the steps below to re-set your mind and start the process of co-creating your “Future Self.” Identify the thoughts, emotions, actions and behavior that you find yourself consistently displaying daily. What are some

of your thoughts or behavior when you are in alignment with your best self? Also make note of what makes you feel NOT in alignment. When you do good stuff that raise your vibrations and allow you to feel happy, you are in alignment. When things take your energy, you are out of alignment. Do more of the good and less of the energy-sucking things in your life. Everything in your subconscious is a reflection of what you truly believe about yourself and your life. In order to step into your aligned energy and create your “Future Self”, start affirming simple phrases or words in present tense. “I AM Worthy of my dreams and my desires”, “Everything and everyone is working on my behalf”, “My opportunities are increasing daily. I AM surrounded by love, abundance and great energy.” As reminded by Napoleon Hill, “Whatever the mind can conceive, the mind can achieve.” Practice gratitude by saying “Thank you to the Universe” for the different things in your life. From waking up the morning to your kids, to all your material blessings, an attitude of gratitude is the quickest way to step into your aligned energy. In the grand scheme of things, we can’t control everything that happens in life. Stepping into your aligned energy doesn’t mean you’ll never face any of life’s challenges and hardships. But you can control how you react to life’s events. When you are aligned and allow things to be as they are, you open yourself up to unlimited happiness and co-creation with the Universe. You allow yourself to “see” and explore the many solutions available to you in the Universe. Allow life to be your teacher, allow the unpleasant feelings to be your teacher, guiding you along your true path.

ST. THOMAS, USVI NATIVE. LAQUAN “PEDIKO CASTRO When audiences think of music emanating from the Caribbean they tend to think of Soca, Dancehall, Reggae, and Calypso but rarely do they think of Hip Hop. One might say this is because the Caribbean only respects the genres that its culture is primarily dominated by, however, in reality this is not the case. Need proof? Just ask the legends Marlon Asher, and Sizzla Kalonji who will argue otherwise. This is solely because of one youthful St Thomian artist who crossed their path and they immediately connected with during their Life of a Ghetto Youth Tour. This youthful rapper goes by the moniker, Pediko. Pediko hails from the Virgin Islands but also reps his bloodline motherland known as Dominica. He emerged within the music industry at a very young age by depicting the hidden reality of the struggles that occur beyond the beauty and beaches of his hometown. His ability to capture the pureness of his pain through gritty storytelling not only captivated the attention of local superstar Pressure Busspipe but it moved him so much that he actually signed Pediko to Busspipe Records.

CARIBBEAN POSH

60

As the only Hip Hop artist on Busspipe Records, Pediko is responsible for 50,000+ views on YouTube and over 150,000 combined streams on his online music catalogue without any promotion or marketing efforts. These results are based off his core fan base. Pediko prides himself as being a true artist rather than just a lyricist. His natural musical prowess has allowed him to evolve into more than just a rapper. Pediko is now considered a

multi-genre musician by way of incorporating his lyrical ability with the Caribbean influences of his childhood which can be seen in his tracks Do the Most and My Way ft Pressure Busspipe. From the outside looking in, Pediko has used his musical talent to rise above the negativity that the street life offers and he is a shining example for the youth on how hard work and dedication can change your life. He actively gives back to his community and explains that his primary motivation is to feed his newborn son and give him the life he has never had. The beauty of Pediko is that he has natural ability to turn a negative situation into a blossoming career and as he does so, he is bringing up the people around him. The new age of Virgin Islands Hip Hop artists attribute their motivations to Pediko and the majority of these artists are actually fans of his music themselves. This is because Pediko represents hope for all youths trying to make something of themselves and authenticity is proven not just through his content but through his character as well. This has been validated and co-signed by veteran artists such as R. City and Benny Demus.

Born and raised in the Virgin Islands (St. Thomas) Star always felt the love for the beat of music at a young age. At the age of 5 she started gravitating to performing through dance, which aligned with her singing at age 9. In her teens Star competed in many pageants such as “Hal Jackson Talented Teen” where she took the title for best talent. Star migrated to New Jersey in 2006 where she gained the title for “New Jersey Idol” and was scouted for Broadway shows such as Lion King & Chicago.

CARIBBEAN POSH

62

Fully wanting to focus on music Star relocated to one of the music capitals “Atlanta”. While gaining recognition in Atlanta she placed top 5 in “Sing for your Life” (Atlanta’s top vocalist competition), Callback round for “The Voice” in 2015 and much more. From there Star Martin took off in the cultural genre “Soca” with songs such as Mistaken Identity, Love your Culcha, Dip & Roll, Trouble and No behavior. Star Martin has performed alongside some of the greats in Soca such as Destra, Skinny Fabulous, Voice, Mr.Killa, Nailah Blackman, Shenseea and many more. Her recent works consists of competing in the St. Thomas Soca Monarch 2019 and also the release of her latest debut EP Called E.L.E.M.E.N.T. that is available on all streaming platforms.

After cutting her teeth in the industry as a songwriter and featured vocalist for mega stars like Sean Paul and Major Lazer (“Jet Blue Jet”

- 100m+ views), Zia Benjamin emerges onto the scene with her own soulful bohemian island gyal sound, which she dubs “rum shop blues.” Over the past few months, Zia released two new singles including “Mr. NeverMan” (produced by the legendary Jamaican selector/DJ RoryStoneLove) in December 2018 and “Rudie” in April 2019. These songs follow her debut solo effort “No Fame.” BILLBOARD premiered the visual for “Mr. NeverMan,” raving “Zia’s brand combines her resonant, soulful voice with genre-blurring songs that fuse smoky jazz, retro dancehall and bubbling roots reggae.” Her latest single “Rudie”(produced by Grammy-nominated Loudcity Music and DJ Sparks) landed her on the cover of TIDAL’s Reggae/Dancehall playlist #TidalRising. On May 6, the song was selected as EBRO’s Beats1 Apple Music Discovered track. To accompany the single, “Rudie” also has two remixes, “Party Shot” and “Dub,” to give fans every reason to play the track no matter what the occasion may be. A music video for “Rudie” will drop in June. Zia will continue to release new material this summer with XXXtentacion’s producers, Andre ‘Vibez’ Chevolleau and JonFX. Her debut EP Love In A Plastic Cup is slated to drop later in the year.

In the meantime, here are 7 things to know about Zia.

1.) Of Black Carib-Indian and German descent, Zia (Christina) Benjamin was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica to immigrant parents. Her mother, who was from a small village in Germany, woke up one morning to Bob Marley’s song “Wake Up And Live” on the radio and it changed her life. She left her fiancé and flew to Jamaica without any connections or fluency in the language. She met Zia’s father, Dr. Bernard Benjamin, who had migrated from the small Caribbean island of Dominica. Fast forward through a dramatic love story and Zia was born

and homes for girls across Jamaica. Zia isn’t afraid to point out the shadiness of the sleazebags in the industry. Her debut song “No Fame” shed light on a personal #MeToo moment, and it has allowed her to share her story with young females in the Caribbean where it is a prevalent issue. “On the outside looking in, the industry seems so glamorous, but when you’re in it there’s a lot of pressure from the people guarding the doors – ‘bow down and I can make your dreams come true’ – it’s so stereotypical, but it’s fact,” Zia says.

2.) Zia is a poet and songwriter. She has written for the likes of Major Lazer and Sean Paul and more recently was commissioned for a writing camp for an international pop star (which remains undisclosed at the moment) who is currently prepping a reggae album. “As a kid I always had ink on my hands, all over my school books – lyrics everywhere. I’d drive to the country with my parents and because I had no paper I’d chew up all my bubble gum and write lyrics on the wrappers – just so I wouldn’t forget them. I’d leave the car with lyrics all over my arm’s because bubble gum wrappers can only hold so much,” Zia states.

5.) Zia is inspired by 1950’s and 60’s jazz bar vocalists, retro dancehall and old Hollywood and obsessed with classic James Bond films. Music and style icons include Billie Holiday, John Lennon, Elizabeth Taylor, Sade, Nina Simone, Marilyn Monroe, Lady Saw and Shabba Ranks. “I think my style is a mix of opposites: I’m like Shabba Ranks meets Marilyn Monroe, with a Nina Simone soul and a few shots of Appleton rum,” Zia adds.

3.) Zia found a passion for documentary production, which was inspired by the tragic killing of her father. Dr. Benjamin was shot by teenagers close to his home in 2005. To find solace, Zia dedicated her documentary work to social justice and human rights issues. Her feature on grief won an award for Documentary Producer Of The Year presented by Fanshawe College and Western University in Ontario, Canada, where she attended and studied media/ journalism/film. Today, she directs all of her own music videos (she lists Quentin Tarantino as an influence) and continues to pursue her love for visual media. She also represents Kingston, Jamaica as a World Economic Forum Global Shaper. 4.) She currently lectures on resisting gender-based violence and working through trauma using art at post-secondary schools

6.) If Zia didn’t pursue her dream of music, she would have been ...“I think if I didn’t pursue my dream of music, I would have been a journalist, although my dad wanted me to follow in his footsteps as a doctor – once, when I was a little girl I helped sew someone’s finger back on after an emergency,” she recalls. Zia was accepted into the prestigious McGill University for sciences, but being the non-conformist that she is she declined at the last minute, without telling her parents, to pursue her passion for journalism at Western University instead. 7.) Zia was a finalist in Miss Jamaica World, and won the award for Beauty With A Purpose. “I spent the month eating Wendy’s in the bathroom wondering wtf I was doing in a pageant– it was also probably the only time in my life that I was consistently in the gym… to work off the Wendys, but I met a ton of dope chicks and I’m still conquering the world with them, we’re still close.”
