editor's page Discover Your Power! The last year and a half has been challenging for most, if not all of us. I believe we all started 2021 determined not have it be anything like 2020. Yet here we are just about half way through 2021still shadowed with uncertainties. It was towards the end of February 2021 where my frustrations started to get unbearable for me. I found myself feeling down, irritable and unable to focus and I simply did not like how I was feeling. I quickly realized that I needed to check myself, check my mind-set, and how I was living. And ask myself, was I going to allow COVID to totally determine my ability to live or even my level of success. If you happen to know me personally, you know my son who happens to be my only child – is my world. And of course as an entrepreneur, Caribbean POSH and the POSHgirl POWER Brunch means everything to me. So the question then became, do I allow COVID to keep me from spending time with my son. Moreover, do I allow COVID to determine my ability to build my brand? I am currently sitting in a mandatory 5-day quarantine because I decided the time, the 4qty COVID tests, along with the higher than usual cost of travel was worth time with my son. Definitely not something, I can afford to do too often. So I sympathize with people who just cannot do it at all, and have missed time with loved ones. Such as a friend of mine who had to attend her mother’s funeral via zoom. I also recall another friend of mine who expressed to me his worry of not being able to spend time with his aging parents due to COVID. Time has become even more precious for us all in this pandemic. From the start of 2021, people have been asking me – “Jan, are you doing the brunch this year?” I knew what I wanted in my heart but in my mind I was struck with concern as to how was I going to pull this off. Sponsorships and even some of my hopeful speakers were not as responsive as prior years. I also needed to reconnect with why I was doing the POSHgirl POWER Brunch in the first place. It was then I decided not to allow myself to be defeated because things got harder.

My advice to you is to -- Discover your Power! Recognise the magnificent being you are by taking charge of your own destiny.

Your unique styles and clothing preferences stand you out from the crowd. But every once in a while, you come across a designer that simply gets your style, matching your need on every level. That's SammyBDesigns for us, and apparently, the rest of the world!

Are you the go-getter or risk-taker? Or maybe you like to feel comfortable in your skin? Whatever your style, personality, or status, there's always something for everyone at SammyBDesigns. Samantha Black has done a great job so far in developing a clothing line that's uniquely NYC. SammyBDesigns are just the perfect blend of grandeur, elegance, and comfort. You'd be amazed. It is little wonder, then, that so many celebrities cannot help but wear Samantha Black’s designs. We’ve spotted a good number of celebs rocking her designs effortlessly, we can’t

help but share!

SAMANTHA BLACK: THE QUEEN CLOTHIER What does New York City remind you of? For Samantha Black, it's “a city of contrast,” a unique blend of numerous styles and cultures. As a proponent of anything NYC, Samantha Black tries to infuse the New York versatility in her clothing line, SammyBDesigns. She does it perfectly. Black had always loved her clothes from childhood. Growing up, she attended Pratt Fashion School, where she bagged her BFA degree in Fashion Design. In tandem with her desire to create excellence in the arts, she became a DJ and music producer for Ayita Music Management. However, fashion has always been her first love. She appeared in Project Runway Season 11 and, subsequently, All Stars 4. Also, Essence and Ebony magazine have recognized her as a designer to watch. Clearly, Samantha B, just like her clothing line, is an absolute delight to follow. CELEBS VIBING IN SAMMYBDESIGNS SammyBDesigns caught the eye of the high-and-mighty quite quickly. From Solange Knowles to Queen B, the fashion line gradually is becoming a formidable clothier for celebrities. Samantha Black has also designed for Angela Simmons, Keri Hilson, and La La Anthony. Sammy Black's client base is undoubtedly star-studded, with many notables rocking her exquisite designs from top to bottom. We've compiled an array of some of the fantastic celebrities vibing in SammyBDesigns. We had a hard time doing this, because any SammyBDesign clothing on anyone gives the celebrity effect in an instant.

1. Beyonce If Beyonce rocking an entire SammyB look isn't all shades of exciting, what else is? The queen of R&B looked ravishing in the Zerina outfit. Like all lovers of suitable clothing, we still can't get over this look.

2. Gabrielle Union Gabrielle Union got us drooling in awe, wearing many SammyBDesigns to perfection. It's difficult choosing our favorite Union-in-SammyBDesigns look; she was breathtaking in all.

3. Trey Songz If you thought SammyB was for the females only, think again. This picture of Trey Songz looking vibrant as a debut for the men's collection is thrilling to look at.

4. Altuna Sejdiu Everyone knows Tuna has eyes for days. Coupled with her amazing taste in fashion, her outfits are a hit every time. Tuna is always a delight to watch. Seeing her in this SammyB look is even more delightful. We love it!

5. Halle Berry Who rocks SammyB's "WOMAN" crop hoodie better than the legendary Halle Berry? The model cum actress definitely doesn't look like she's in her fifties in this outfit.

6. Keke Palmer If you're a Keke Palmer fan, her complete SammyBDesigns look will be your favorite in no time. We promise. We still can't get over how she sparkles in her full SammyBDesign look.

7. Megan Thee Stallion

8. Draya Michelle

9. Tosh Alexander Who knew t-shirts could look this good? The beautiful songstress vibes so well in this SammyB T-shirt, we can't help but drool.

10. Gabriella Wilson We are definitely here for this look! Gabriella is such a stunner in this pink SammyB jacket. Yes?

For Samantha Black, there's only one way to go—your way. That's precisely the statement she's making with SammyBDesigns. The SammyBDesigns clothing line is currently one of the biggest things to happen to NYC's fashion industry. With her celebrity clientele, Sammy isn't resting on her oars. She's in for big things this year, and we can't wait to see what she's cooking.

If you have always felt drawn to colour but your life demands that you stick to neutrals, find ways to bring out what really brings you joy in the way that you dress and present yourself to the world. Aim to purchase timeless staples that can be styled in different ways yet still have flare and personality, you deserve to splurge on pieces that will serve as your essentials.

All of the looks came together so well it is very hard to choose. My favourite look would be the green dress with the voluminous black hair. How did you achieve the look?

The core of both looks feature: Danessa Myricks Beauty-Illuminating Veil (shade - Goddess) Vision Cream Cover Foundations (shades - W4,W5&W6) Evolution Powders (shades - 2&3.) - The eyeshadows are: Juvias Place (Warrior II) [Look 4] - Lip products are: MAC cosmetics (LipGlass - Oh Baby) [Look 1] L’Oréal (Infallible Lip Paint - 310) [Look 4]

For every look, the hair was prepped a day in advance. For the black voluminous look, I curled, pinned, sprayed it with Sebastian's hair spray, and covered it with a net. Also in the process of putting the wig on, I used a little adhesive- olive oil holding spray, and to hold down the lace I used the ‘beautyandthebeatwigs’ melting band.

The finishing touches and techniques for both looks are a few of my closely guarded trade secrets and can only be experienced by gracing my chair. I will however, share one tip with you that I used on Rexy. Use your cream contour shade as a lip liner instead of a lip pencil. This will allow for seamless blending with your chosen lipstick colour. Harsh lip lines will be a thing of the past.

What would you recommend for women wanting to refresh their look?

What would you recommend for women wanting to refresh their look?

I would always recommend trying a hair colour and style that you have never tried before. Something that says, "I'm edgy but classy".

The first thing I recommend for ladies wanting to refresh their look is to determine how far they are willing to venture outside of their comfort zone. This can range from simply incorporating a new signature lipstick colour into their beauty routine, or as far as adding a fuller coverage foundation with eyeshadow and voluminous eyelashes into their beauty arsenal. Regardless of which direction they choose to go in, the goal should always be to stay true to their essence and highlight their authentic self.

Black Owned Makeup Brands to Shop

Highlighting and celebrating black artists, entrepreneurs, creators, professionals, and black people, in general, is not something that we should leave to a particular period of the year. While it's awesome to set a month aside to help the general society understand the gift that is Black people and their creations, it's absolutely important to ensure that we are acknowledging people of color all year long. To do this effectively, we need to purchase art from black people, hire black people at our organizations, and patronize black businesses, whether they are small businesses or they've grown to become corporations. We’re highlighting a few black-owned makeup brands for you to shop,

We're tired of having to mix several shades of foundation just to get a fitting shade, so this is definitely welcome. The best part of Fenty Beauty bringing true inclusion to the table is that it caused many established beauty brands to reconsider their offerings. Now, more brands that aren't even black-owned have started expanding their offerings to cater to a more diverse customer base. In case we weren't clear the first time, we love to see it! 3. HYPER SKIN Owned by Desiree Verdejo, Hyper Skin is a beauty brand that caters to women of color. This brand has an interesting history. Desiree had owned a beauty boutique in Harlem, Vibrant Beauty. Her beauty boutique carried a variety of premium skin-care products. As she ran this establishment, she got great insight into what black women needed, so she set out to do something about it. MENTED COSMETICS If you have ever wondered why it's so hard to find nude lipstick that matches the skin tone of black women, Mented Cosmetics presents a solution for you.

The two founders of the brand, KJ Miller and Amanda E. Johnson, set out to create Mented Cosmetics rising on the back of nude lipstick scarcity for women of color. As they progressed, they created some of the most appropriate nude lipsticks for deep brown skin. One of their lipsticks even won a Best of Beauty Award. They now created lip liners, eye shadows, blushes, and foundation sticks to expand their products line. 6. IMAN COSMETICS Iman is one beauty brand that has stood the test of time. Created by supermodel Iman in 1994, this brand is meant for every skin tone and color. Finding a product that matches your skin shouldn't be much of a problem when you use Iman. With more black-owned makeup brands coming on board, the beauty and skincare market is expanding, and women of color cater to it now more than ever. You should patronize these brands and get your friends and family to do the same. This way, you’d be encouraging inclusion and diversity in the beauty industry.

Rihanna’s

Hair Stylist’s Collection of Rihanna is the queen of hairstyle morphing. She rocks her long, long tendrils just as beautifully as she can slay cropped short hair. All this is thanks to her natural Barbadian good looks, and of course, her absolutely fabulous hairstylist, Yusef Williams.

Hair Tools

However, Yusef has a little help—his hairstyling tools! Over the years, Yusef learned the ins and outs of his work tools. He knew that one of the most important elements of creating perfect works of hair art was using quality hair tools. In his interview with Essence, Yusef tells more about the story behind his latest baby. THE Y BY YUSEF: THE BACKSTORY We can say that the many interviews about hair tools that Yusef had, was the lightbulb idea that kicked off his hair tools collection project. He said, “I found myself doing an overwhelming amount of interviews about [my] tools, but it was weird. So I thought, how do I come up with something that’s super cool to where every woman can have these things at her fingertips and know exactly what they’re for? These are essentials. They work, they’re durable, they’re affordable.” Yusef took time and utmost care to ensure that his hair tools’ production was high-quality, such that the brand could speak for itself. One of the reasons he “busted his ass” and put in much time, research, and effort to make sure his tools were top-line was because there were no brands out there that he could compare the collection to, so he had to make self-effort to ensure everything worked right.

If you have ever fallen in love with any of Rihanna’s hair looks, your gratitude should go to Yusef for creating another premium masterpiece. Yusef prides himself on his work and his ability to create unique yet grounded hairstyles for Rihanna from scratch.

The tools are functional and clever to ease up the hairstyling process. For instance, you could part, detangle, and braid hair using just one item out of his hairstyling collection. He designed brushes with a hidden pin that only comes to play when you need it. Through research about various hair tools’ origins, Yusef made the most of them by simply enhancing their functions.

With the multiplicity of each tool’s functions, hairstylists no longer have to work with so many tools in one hand. These products are also made to be durable and long-lasting; some are even made with titanium barrels for type 4C queens with tougher-textured hair. Yusef considered hair attributes for different hair types and paid attention to the littlest details, so the products are all-hair type-inclusive. “I’m always trying to make things accessible and cool at the same time. Because I feel like hair is just icing on the cake, so if your hair is going to be pulled back in a ponytail, there are things you can do to give it that push. That street cred... Hair with purpose,” William said.

THE Y BY YUSEF: THE COLLECTION

The collection launched in New York City, last spring, at the peak of the pandemic. Without much pomp and fanfare, and only word of mouth promotion, the brand kicked off. Yusef released a styling course called the Y Sessions with the collection to help eager hair stylists boost their styling game and style like a pro. The affordability of the items in his collection means one thing for sure; Williams is eager to bid bad hair days goodbye for everyone. Check out some of the tools that caught our fancy on The Y by Yusef site.

1. YUSEF 2 PK TOOTHBRUSH WITH SECTIONING PIN

2. YUSEF 2-SIDED CLUB BRUSH

Many of us are guilty of substituting toothbrushes for laying our edges or styling the hair. Wrong!

This is another versatile 2-in-1 tool. One side works for polishing coarse beard hair; the other smoothly distributes natural oils. It goes for $12.

Yusef ’s 2 pk Toothbrush with Sectioning Pin is the ideal tool you need for laying those edges because it is designed for hair. Even nicer, you get a sectioning pin with a bald tip to help you section your hair accurately. No more switching tools while styling. 3. YUSEF 8 CT. NO CREASE CLIP KIT

These babies are an absolute delight for styling hair without crease. You can pin your hair in different styles without a mark or a bend, all for $15.

4. YUSEF BRUSH AND BOTTLE SET

Yusef also has a few pro sets in his collection. This one is our favorite. At $60, hair professionals can cop this much-needed styling set for everyday use.

YVETTE

THOMAS-HENRY Regional Vice President and General Manager

Yvette Thomas-Henry follows the mantra of “always strive to be the best at whatever you do.” She learned this early on from her mother who made this a calling card for her five children. “I took it a step further, by not just being the best, but being associated with the best,” says ThomasHenry. Keeping that mentality at the front of her mind, those words are evident in her ceiling-shattering journey to the top as the current Regional Vice President and General Manager of Four Seasons Resort Nevis. As a veteran of Four Seasons with a career spanning more than a decade, Thomas-Henry began her career with the leading luxury hotel company as Director of Rooms at Four Seasons Hotel New York in 2007 and soon became a known leader in the industry across the East Coast with a stop at Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC. But it was her return to New York in 2013 where Thomas-Henry assumed the role of Acting General Manager following the transfer of the Hotel’s previous executive, that her own GM and hotel leadership future was crystalised. In 2015, Thomas-Henry headed south to Atlanta and quickly took charge as the Hotel’s new General Manager. With a reinvigorated Hotel operation, which included refreshed guest rooms, new restaurant Bar Margot and a newly redesigned Penthouse Ballroom on the Hotel’s 50th floor, Thomas-Henry embraced the challenges and excitement of her newfound leadership. She brought with her a personal enthusiasm, a passion for hospitality, a focus on growing female leaders, a commitment for giving back to the community and the expectation of the same from her colleagues. Central to her style of management is a commitment to her team and to creating an environment that is focused on motivating everyone to be their best, to be empowered and be their most creative selves. Under her leadership, the Hotel achieved four years of financial success, including the most historic year of financial performance while also maintaining its status as AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star address in Atlanta. Now, the native of the United States Virgin Islands returns home to the Caribbean to lead the team at Four Seasons Resort Nevis as the company’s first Caribbean property emerges from a gamechanging, multi-year enhancement project. Not always walking a path toward the hospitality industry, ThomasHenry’s interest in hotels piqued one afternoon while strolling through Central Park South after passing The Plaza Hotel, a luxury hotel that was hosting a job fair. With the need of a job to help cover college expenses and glamorous thoughts of meeting famous celebrities flooding her mind, Thomas-Henry popped in and was hired as a front office agent. From there, she was promoted into a supervisory role, which included the training management of line staff, and later led to an assistant manager position. From there, her career in the hotel industry took off. Prior to joining the Four Seasons family, Thomas-Henry held leadership positions

at the property level with The Waldorf Astoria, Conrad Hotels and The Ritz-Carlton. Never looking back, Thomas-Henry has flourished in the luxury hotel industry and notably as the first female African-American General Manager of Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta and Regional Vice President with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. In her latest leadership role in Nevis, Thomas-Henry continues to oversee several properties, including two Caribbean resorts. Confident in her role and her accomplishments, Thomas-Henry advocates that this is a prime time for women to take charge and attain leadership positions such as hers. “Women bring such a special sense of style and an approach to leadership that is unique. The value of what we bring to the table is being recognised across many industries,” she says. With a passion for the arts and the mentorship of aspiring female leaders in the hotel industry, Thomas-Henry has been an active speaker at the Castell Project in Atlanta, which is focused on accelerating the development of high-potential women in the hospitality industry. She has also served as a member of the Steering Committee for Women in Leadership for Georgia Hotel and Lodging Association and sat on the board for several organisations, including the Midtown Alliance, the Alliance Theatre at the Woodruff Arts Center, The National Black Arts Festival and the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Additionally, Thomas-Henry has acted as a mentor for elementary school students at Tuskegee Airman Global Academy, an inner city elementary school in an underserved community, and has worked alongside her nearly 300 Atlanta employees to dedicate more than 500 hours of annual service toward local organisations across the city and lend support to organisations giving back to the community. When she’s off the clock, Thomas-Henry enjoys travelling. Her preferred method for navigating short distances is via roller blades, a skill she honed in Central Park. When she boards a flight, her passport is likely to be stamped with international destinations. Thomas-Henry enjoys travelling with family and swears by annual girlfriend trips to places with great art, great food and great music. Married to her high school sweetheart Thomas for nearly 30 years, the couple are proud parents of two wonderful, confident adult sons Myles and Jarrod. They have been some of her biggest supporters as she has risen through the ranks of her career. Born in St. Thomas, USVI and raised in St. Croix, Thomas-Henry credits her mother for constantly reminding her to be the best at whatever she does. Thomas-Henry holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Language Pathology at Pace University, New York and a Masters of Science in Administration for Human Service from Audrey Cohen College in New York.

od consistent hard work, a multifaceted team, and long-standing passengers for the continuous growth of Western Air Ltd., the largest privately owned airline in the Bahamas. Sherrexcia (Rexy) Rolle, gave us some great insights into how her hard work as Vice President of Operations and general counsel for her family owned business has blossomed into a Bahamian airline enterprise begun on Andros Island. Daily flights from several hubs are scheduled between Nassau, Freeport, Congo Town, Bimini, and San Andros. Charter flights throughout the greater Bahamas, Caribbean, Central and South America, are serviced and overseen by 140 employees. The hard work and long hours have not taken away her bright spirit and energy; she manages to enjoy creating music and being involved in the social life of the islands.

Captain Rex Rolle, Rexy’s father, serves as President & CEO and has a U.S. FAA and Bahamian certification as an airlines transport pilot, and as a certified flight instructor, certified instruments flight instructor, and certified multi-engine instructor with more than 30 years experience as a professional pilot, executive, and consultant. Captain Rolle’s wife Shandrice Woodside-Rolle serves as Vice-President and COO of Western Air her degree in international business along with an entrepreneurial spirit keeps the company running smoothly. POSH How have the difficult times in the last few years with Covid-19 and major hurricane Dorian impacted your business outlook? REXY We learned not to have all our eggs in one basket. We learned to separate our organizational chart into the hubs and placing parts and inventories in different areas. I don’t think that one could actually build for the level of hurricane that happened, but to see how our employees personally jumped into gear has made us more grateful for the wonderful team we have. POSH How would you describe your home-life and your BahamianCaribbean upbringing?

ZOOM INTERVIEW by Janette Brin Creative Director + Photographer Scharad Lightbourne

REXY We had a very spirited upbringing that included grandparents, aunts, and uncles – literally a large family. Even our nonfamily neighbors and friends would discipline us, teaching right and wrong ways to behave. I was raised on Andros that is not populated by many people. There was no one there homeless and if you were hungry there was always someone down the street that shared extra food. I grew up understanding the importance of family and the importance of being disciplined and productive. POSH I am from the Virgin Islands and can relate to your upbringing, but what is a must to do for a true Bahamas experience, since I have never been there? REXY You should try the food experience first; conch salad, comforters, and Cracked Conch are just a small sampling and our Bahamas National beer. I would suggest a visit to Exuma’s 365 islands with its most beautiful waters and cays. POSH Congratulations on your recent interview with Forbes Magazine where you talked about being involved as vicepresident of your family’s airline, an attorney for the company and a musician. What drives your passion for a multi-level career? REXY I believe that we are not one-dimensional; we have so many aspects to ourselves that need to be explored and expressed. Since I was young, I feel and work best when I’m dealing with multiple things. I offset my corporate life with some creative elements that I am interested in. Law is a very demanding and I balance that with music that allows me some creative outlet to balance myself.

Creative Team: Stylist: Hannah Sands MUA: Ge-Ah S. Smith Hair: Denise Francis

POSH Since working for your family business, what have you learned about yourself and what was that journey like? REXY The journey began when I was 12 years old. Now, we started our first flight in 2001 simply by providing a transportation solution, but it grew beyond our imagination. We developed a consistent and aggressive approach to service. I have to give my dad credit for that in terms of strategy. Initially, we wanted to schedule maybe three flights a day. The success we had with full flights prompted us to branch out to build a level of trust and commitment in us and so we were invited to other islands. It was important as we grew to incorporate government compliance, corporate governance rules and some legal aspects into the business. When I decided to enter law school I focused on what makes aviation run and how I could dovetail financing, leasing, mediation, and acquisitions along with all else, we were able to save thousands of dollars by not paying lawyer fees. In the last five to six years we experienced significant growth and fine-tuning where we wanted to be. As VP of Operations, it fell to me to talk to various departments to ensure that they are communicating to achieve the all important goals of being on time, efficient service and getting the customer’s bags to them. A pilot for example, should not be concerned about ground handling. We match the duty to each department so there is no overlapping of work. I have learned to see the bigger picture of what our company is all about, and what I am all about as well. POSH Did you choose to study law because of your interest in business, or have you always wanted to be a lawyer?

I always wanted to be a lawyer since I was maybe seven or eight. I told my parents I was going to be a lawyer and a pop star. I ended up going to law school; I just didn’t know it would be so aviation based. Western Air had started. It just didn’t click with me until I found where I would be most useful. POSH Can you tell us a bit about being a black woman in the world of aviation?

REXY Certainly at this point it has become much better, but in earlier days I was mistaken as being someone’s assistant, or a flight attendant. The assumptions were automatic and not that there is anything wrong with being a flight attendant or assistant. But I think your work must speak for itself. It took time for people to see how the operations continued to improve to really start to acknowledge. I am a black woman and very vocal when I feel we are not treated fairly. I don’t shy away from correcting something or someone. We generally always come together about racial and gender issues and people do readjust to a good experience. POSH Would you consider having your own law firm in the future? REXY I would not right now because I’m committed to what we’re doing at Western Air, but because I recently had the pleasure of earning a legal education certificate under the Eugene Dupuch Law School in the Bahamas I may look at it in the future. I am also a practicing member of the bar in California and Washington DC. Many of our transactions with vendors and financial relationships are U.S. based. We use external counsel for litigation and non-aviation concerns currently… Perhaps it may be great to have an all female law firm – it’s just an idea for now. Right now I am more focused on Western Air receiving base certification from TSA to service the U.S. We are really excited for this growth. POSH When it comes to family businesses, what advice would you want to share with other Caribbean people with family owned businesses? REXY The core of any business is either being able to solve problems, or it is providing a product or service. Beyond that you really don’t have much of a business if you are not in compliance with regulations pertaining to your industry and operating within the scope of. After this you’ll be to spread your wings. Often people have a great idea, but may not know the return of the investment. It is really important to be familiar with the breath of information on the country’s rules and regulations regardless of what kind of business you wish to start. POSH What would you say taught you the most about any failure within your career?

REXY I would say overextending ourselves because we want to offer our customers options. As an example, an island with 30 inhabitants may only need one flight a day instead of two. We can’t place just one person on a flight. If hotels and resorts can provide the people to fly with us, we will be there. POSH You are obviously very close to your parents. What is the greatest lesson you’ve learned from them? REXY You’ve found my emotional spot talking about my parents. My mother was 17 when she had me and my father was 22 - Marriage at ages 16 and 21. I would say that we grew up together. I would say they faced anything that was thrown at them, the stood on their faith first. Secondly, they never gave up on their goals. I learned those two key elements from them. Today we have a myriad of options on how best to proceed with business and life: practical methods and theories on how to move forward. But none of this was available to them in the early stages of the business. They have learned that longstanding relationships are critical. The relationship you build with bankers, financiers etc. creates loyalty that can last for many years into the future of your business.

POSH Are you a “daddy’s girl”? I noticed your father is Rex and you are known as Rexy. REXY I certainly do consider myself a daddy’s girl. He is awesome. As to empowering women, we have to consider what men are willing to say. My dad always told me to not let anyone push me down and that I am just as capable. Instilling the values of hard work and getting a job done applies to my little brother and me equally. I so value that. POSH You have built an amazing personal brand for yourself in your music. What was the key for you to develop this image, and what do you really want to be known for? REXY The key for me was authenticity. I like to mix variations of who we are as I have said before. I like music, dance, and fashion too, not just seeing myself as a stuffy corporate lawyer. I would like to be known for being fearless in pursuing other business ventures, various ideas and passion projects. I want people to say I have lots going on and love to connect with people. My music says Island Pop Easy, very chill. Always reminds me of springtime. I write all of my music and look

forward to putting out more to infuse pop elements with continuing with Caribbean Island style and reggae influences. I will be working on putting out more singles in the future. POSH Tell us a little about your speaking engagements and mentoring young girls. REXY I began a mentoring initiative with a friend of mine called Gallon Emission. Mentoring is incredibly rewarding and I still keep in touch with some of the girls and find it beneficial for both them and myself. Ages 10 to 16 are a critical time for self-esteem, body image, and career planning and making smart choices. I want to fee that I am really contributing to someone’s life and giving guidance. We hope to do more events in the future when hurricane rebuilding and Covid is under control. POSH What do you do for fun? REXY Well I love to eat and I love great conversations with family and friends and trying out new restaurants. I enjoy sports and travel. I enjoy a great spa day, meeting up with my friends and having fun! POSH Thank you so much for talking with POSH and we look forward to you being a part of the POSHgirl POWER Brunch. Is there anything else on your heart that you want to share with us? REXY It is super important to be conscious of who you are as a person, the things that you like and move you; that helps to find your purpose. Thank you so much. It has been a pleasure speaking with you.

@Sageroots

What is your Elevator Pitch? Sageroots creates simple safe and sustainable skincare products…Maybe that’s my “I’ve got five seconds to tell you what I do pitch” Let’s try this again: Sageroots believes that all customers should have easy access to personal care products that are safe for them and their environment so we formulate botanically based skincare products, using scientifically supported and locally grown ingredients with environmental sustainability at the core of our operation. You no longer have to choose safety and efficacy over environmental sustainability any longer, with Sageroots skincare products, you can have both! What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur? Honestly, it sort of happened out of a need to get access to “Truly good for me and my environment” skin and haircare products. These were not readily accessible in the Virgin Islands, so we decided to fill that gap in the market, because if we had that concern, others had it too. What led you to your particular business? The need for those products was a driving force. I am passionate about environmental sustainability, crafting products (I’m not so secretly a science beauty nerd) and sharing with others. Sageroots provided the opportunity to combine these three passions by allowing me to formulate and sell effective yet environmentally responsible products while educating consumers to the science of beauty and sustainability. How did you raise funding for your venture? Funding for my business came through my personal funds and loans. How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful? Right now, we spend most of the time using free platforms for marketing our business on Facebook and Instagram, but we are hopeful to be able to ramp this up in the near future. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? I do not know if most of these are skills or just mindset, but I think as an entrepreneur you have to be self-motivated, dedicated and people skills are really helpful too. What entrepreneurial tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive in your day-to-day busy schedule? I’m still working on developing these tricks, but I also still have a “day job” so I usually schedule every aspect of my day to help me get through all my responsibilities. My brain works better in the morning, so I’m usually up and working when the night owls are just going to bed. This helps me to have much less distractions and be more productive (because who is going to be calling you at four in the morning right?).

What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs to invest their time in? Finance and Accounting! If that is not your background it can seem daunting, but it’s so important in helping to you know whether you are “coming or going” in your business. Sometimes we overthink it, but we’re managing our personal finances (at least we should be), so if we’re doing a good job with that we can transfer those skills over to our businesses. Who has been your greatest inspiration? It’s hard to pick just one person to fill this role because there are so many in this spot for me, so I’ll probably highlight an inspirational piece of advice.. “Push past no.”

Hodge-Philip B.A. (Hons) Brand Management • Media Design • Marketing & PR

What is your Elevator Pitch? I am a Brand Manager and Digital Marketer who partners with SME’s, CEOs, executives, creatives and solopreneurs to develop and grow their personal and professional brands with communications, business, marketing and design strategies. A former Miss British Virgin Islands Universe, I am currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Media Design at Full Sail University. What was your key driving force to become an entrepreneur? I came to the realization near the end of my high school tenure that I possessed many skill-sets and talents that weren’t just hobbies, but from which I could earn income I felt that being an entrepreneur would allow me tap into these various talents and better allow me to carve my own path. What led you to your particular business? I am passionate about many fields but I focused mainly on what I believed I was best at. I aligned my educational journey with that path and the rest is history. How did you raise funding for your venture? I funded my business on my own and continue to build step by step.

How do you market your business, and which tactics have been most successful? I actually do not ‘actively’ market my business. Yes, I have a strong online presence (website, social media, online profiles and features), but my clients advertise for me and my work speaks for itself. What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur? 1. Patience 2. Organizational Skills 3. Leadership Skills What entrepreneurial tricks have you discovered to keep you focused and productive in your day-to-day busy schedule? I am a fan of technology and so I utilize a number of software and apps to keep me focused and organized. I’ve also made mandatory rules for myself to take breaks, get rest and to not forget to have fun. What key activities would you recommend entrepreneurs to invest their time in? I strongly recommend daily reading and learning. I cover topics from the Bible to the stock market. This is something I honed in more on since the start of the pandemic and it has drastically improved my overall knowledgebase and execution strategy. Who has been your greatest inspiration? My son Aiden has been my greatest inspiration.

Boost your

Career Profile:

How Learning New Skills, Volunteering and Having a Plan Can Make You More Marketable So You Can Land Your Dream Job.

By Alejandra Cerball

If you're feeling unmotivated in your current role or you're ready to see what else is out there, it may be time to upgrade your career profile. It's never a bad idea to polish up your skills, take a course to learn something new or set career goals to get a raise or promotion. When you take steps to make yourself more marketable, you are showing your current or future employer that you mean business, and you're ready to take on a new role with more responsibilities.

KEEP A JOURNAL TO TRACK YOUR GOALS.

Use these tips to improve your career profile so you can wow recruiters when they come across your resume. BOOST YOUR RESUME AND COVER LETTER WITH NUMBERS AND EXAMPLES. When it comes to resumes, most people like to use the words: punctual, motivated, and a team player. While these are all excellent traits to have, these qualities don't stand out in a stack of resumes. Instead, use keywords to show how you can benefit the company. For example, you can explain how you managed a team of five or reached your sales targets every quarter. This helps paint a clear picture of your work ethic and what you will bring to the table instead of using flashy words that don't carry much weight.

List five to 10 skills that you want to develop and give yourself a report card every few months. You can also turn to a mentor in your company or a manager to help give you feedback. By creating actionable goals, you can take note of areas where your skills may be lacking. Use the results to develop a plan for what you want to achieve and what you need to do to get there. Stay focused on what you want to learn and reach out to people in your industry who can help you develop those skills. FIND A MENTOR TO HELP YOU GROW. Sometimes finding a mentor can be easier said than done. You want to build a relationship with the person first so that you both feel comfortable

talking about your skills, and opportunities for growth. Start searching within your network first and invite them out for coffee or send them a short greeting before asking, "Will you be my mentor?" If you can't think of anyone in your circle, check to see if your current company offers a mentorship program. Avoid asking a stranger because they will likely turn down your request. Be clear about your expectations, never show up late, and strive to give more to the relationship than what you take.

Social media platforms like Instagram, Linkedin, and Facebook can set you apart as a leader in your field. If you are a photographer, post your best work on your social platforms. If you're a writer, regularly post articles showcasing your work. Use social media to help you build your brand and show recruiters how you market yourself. VOLUNTEER OR JOIN A PROFESSIONAL GROUP TO GIVE BACK AND EXPAND YOUR NETWORK. LEARN SOMETHING NEW. SEARCH ONLINE FOR FREE COURSES. If you're searching for a job or happy in your current role, consider investing in your career development, by taking a course to further your skills. Enroll in a free Yoast course to learn about SEO, explore Skillshare to see what you can learn about photo editing or check in with your company to see what type of learning opportunities they offer. If you don’t ask, you might miss out on an excellent opportunity to learn

something new. Look for jobs in your industry and see what type of skills you haven't mastered yet. If you don't have some of these skills, do a quick search online to see how you can get a certificate or accreditation. You don't have to spend a lot of money on courses, many are available for free. USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO BUILD BUSINESS CONNECTIONS. Right now is an excellent time to do a review of your LinkedIn profile summary. Is your website linked? Is your profile photo a current professional-looking headshot? Do you post valuable content regularly? Are you putting your best self out there for employers to see?

Give back to others by offering your time. You never know what opportunities may open up from volunteering. It's a chance to grow your skills and your network. Plus, it looks great on a resume. You can volunteer by taking photos at an event, teach people basic computer skills or give time petting dogs at a local animal shelter. Search for opportunities in your neighborhood to help your local community. Are you a member of a professional organization? Do you have an active role? Volunteer to become a mentor, or become a leader in your industry group. It's a great opportunity to meet more people in your field and help others at the same time. By freshening up your skills, tracking your goals, and volunteering, you are taking steps to make yourself more marketable. Before you leave your current role, ask your boss for a letter of recommendation, and never burn any bridges. Use these tips to help you get that promotion, or land the job of your dreams today!

Shantel ChaiLee Makeup Artistry + ChaiLee Lashes @Chailee___ & @chailee_lashes

Our services are available for booking at chaileebookings.as.me/ and you can visit our social media on Instagram @chailee___ and Chailee_lashes. WHAT WAS YOUR KEY DRIVING FORCE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR? The drive behind becoming an entrepreneur stems from growing up in Jamaica and the entrepreneurial culture that exists there. I learned from a young age the importance of having more than one streams of income and very quickly realized that financial freedom is critical to being able to afford and maintain a good lifestyle. WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR PARTICULAR BUSINESS? I have always been obsessed by all things ‘beauty’. I first thought of specializing in makeup while attending the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica. Makeup artistry had everything I cared for: a good income, flexible hours, and the occasion to meet new people. So in addition to my business courses, I also enrolled in a Makeup Artistry program at an Aesthetic Institute that was in close proximity of the University. A few years later, I extended my brand to supplying my own luxury line of lashes, ChaiLee Lashes. HOW DID YOU RAISE FUNDING FOR YOUR VENTURE? Funding from my business came from personal investment. I started very small with money from my savings and built on that. Financial independence was key for me as it allowed me to do this at my own speed and with the luxury of managing my time as I saw fit. I did not want to have to deal with loans and banks, or even have the pressure of involving friends and family. HOW DO YOU MARKET YOUR BUSINESS, AND WHICH TACTICS HAVE BEEN MOST SUCCESSFUL? I market myself through social media and through networking. So far, I have benefited the most from networking which provided an avenue for me to sharing my knowledge on makeup techniques and products as well as recommendations. Networking can take different forms, for instance, small private events or talking about what I do when I meet people. Makeup artistry is intrinsically personal, if not intimate. I need to be able to assess someone’s face, touch their skin, identify what will work best for them for that particular occasion. This is a people’s business. Actually, I would go further than that: this is a person-to-person business. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE TOP THREE SKILLS NEEDED TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ENTREPRENEUR? I would have to say that the top three skills needed to be a successful entrepreneur are strategic thinking, networking and resilience. Strategic thinking in finding ways to navigate unfamiliar ‘territories’ in creating opportunities for growth, as well as finding solutions and being resourceful. Resilience, as it will not always be smooth sailing. There will be challenges, rejections, slow progress, at times no progress at all. In dealing with that, you will need to be able to push forward regardless. Networking because unless one can afford mass advertising, it is extremely ifficult to increase brand awareness without it.

WHAT ENTREPRENEURIAL TRICKS HAVE YOU DISCOVERED TO KEEP YOU FOCUSED AND PRODUCTIVE IN YOUR DAY-TO-DAY BUSY SCHEDULE? I would love to say that I have some tricks up my sleeve in keeping focused and productive, however, I have to admit that this has been a struggle. If you are like me, you run a small business, work full-time while trying to advance your career, it becomes extremely hard to keep focused and not be pulled in many directions. I believe time management is key. There are various techniques out there but what works for me is rather simple: I start each day by writing down everything I want to do that day. Let’s be honest, I do not cross every line on that list every day, I have been guilty of being too ambitious on a number of occasions, but this has been really helpful to me WHAT KEY ACTIVITIES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND ENTREPRENEURS TO INVEST THEIR TIME IN? Research, research and research. Once you are done researching, research again. It is critical to learn about products, techniques, new trends, what works, does not work and also about your clients. If you do not spend time maintaining your knowledge, someone else will, and your business will fast become obsolete. I also believe in mentorship. I crave mentors and their advice. It is important to talk to people who can give you sound advice, who have done it before you and made mistakes of their own that you can learn from. If you get the opportunity, try and also become a mentor, “new” entrepreneurs can learn from your experiences and advice. Networking is at the top of the list too, it creates meaningful connections and opportunities that can aid with the growth of your business. It gives you a chance to build your brand’s reputation by providing others with information. WHO HAS BEEN YOUR GREATEST INSPIRATION? I tend to find inspiration in people around me but if I had to choose one person, it would be my mom. She was always pushing forward. If she ever became too comfortable, she took that as an indication to move on to something more challenging. Whatever she decided to accomplish, she always did, even if it took longer than anticipated or was harder than expected. She got it done.

WHAT WAS YOUR KEY DRIVING FORCE TO BECOME AN ENTREPRENEUR? The driving force behind me becoming an entrepreneur is to be self -reliant and being able to build a thriving black owned business that can in turn help the community. WHAT LED YOU TO YOUR PARTICULAR BUSINESS? I always had a keen interest in fashion, style and the arts from a tender age. As a teenager I always wanted to dress a bit different and on occasions designed my own outfits’ .After learning how to crochet, I made my first piece of clothing which was a beanie hat and sparked my love for creating pieces of clothing.

How to own your leadership

development

POSHlifestyle

at work

The pandemic has pushed back your career goals and the promotion you were focused on. You mapped out your vision board but the months have slipped by and you’re feeling like you’re no further forward. Time to take matters in your own hands and have a mindset reset! Ask yourself; • How can I take ownership of my goals at work? • How can I get the support needed to achieve? • How can I be more visible? • How can I make sure that I stay on track with the goals? You’ll notice all the questions are focused on what YOU can do. Women often overlook that they can actually take control of their own personal development. You don’t have to wait for your employer to map out your future and you can get increased returns when you take charge of your own personal development. Here a few actions to help you; 1. Utilize your weekly/monthly reviews - Discuss your goals with your manager to gain their buy-in and support. If you don’t already have regular meetings, request to have a quick meeting with your immediate manager. Be prepared, clearly outline what your aspirations are for the next 6-12 months and the support you are requesting. Make sure you also highlight how a more developed you can support the business.

2. There’s no such thing as a free lunch – Not every employer provides time for personal development, but that doesn't mean that you can't take that into your own hands. Give yourself some study time by utilizing your lunch break - use one of those hours to expand your knowledge by reading articles, listening to podcasts etc. 3. Stick to your plan – Create your own 90 day personal development plan. Thinking 12 months ahead can be daunting and we lose impetus as the reward seems so far away, so break it down. Focus on the goals for the next 90 days. Highlight, the actions you can discuss in your manager in your 121’s and during your team meetings. Identify ways you can get support, consider how you and your team members can help each other to achieve your individual and organizational goals. 4. Your Boss, doesn’t have to spend money on you - When we talk about development, our minds often turn to formal study, college, university etc. In this climate a lot of organizations have limited budgets for development, but that doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Consider innovative ways to develop your learning, listen to podcasts, download free e-books, read articles (just like you’re doing now), check out the free courses offered by LinkedIn, even talking to somebody in another department is learning. 5. Find a mentor - If your goal is to become a leader, how much do you really know about what it takes to be a success? Reality versus the fantasy of leadership can differ greatly, not just for individuals but also by industry. So find yourself a mentor, somebody you can have a really frank discussion about what the roles you aspire to and how did they get ahead? What do they recommend you do to help you to move you forward? In the ideal scenario, you’d have an ongoing relationship with a mentor but if your target feels unable to commit, request a meeting and make sure you’re armed with the questions you'd like answers to that will further your development.

6. Make the most of your manager meetings – I’m returning to my first point regarding one to ones. It may seem tedious to have these meetings, but this is your time. When else do you have the opportunity to influence someone who can help further your career to demonstrate how good you are at your job? Be honest, how engaged you are during this time? This is the time, to lay out what support you need from your Boss, not just answer their questions. Prepare yourself and the questions you want to ask. If your Manager gets distracted in your meetings, identify ways you can control the environment – meet in a breakout room or canteen way from their desk, hold the meeting at your desk, politely ask if you can both focus on the conversation as you have a number of questions you’d like to ask. If they’re that busy then it’s even more imperative that you make your meeting really beneficial and really listen to the response to your requests - what words are being used, the nuances of body language etc. so that you identify a different way to approach the subject. 7. Thank you for being a friend – There is power in peer partnerships that is liaising with a colleague in a different part of the business, maybe doing a role you aspire to. Have a chat with them, speak to their manager, speak to your manager to see if there is a way you can spend some time with them, shadowing or a job swap. Simple but powerful actions all in your control and move you from career stagnation to progression. ways to ensure

your child gets a

GOOD EDUCATION

The Oxford Method, a tutoring community, offers tips to help your child be successful in school.

Over the last year, during the pandemic, there have been many kids who have struggled academically. This is in part due to the millions who have had to do online learning and find the setup difficult. Whether children are learning online, in person, via classroom or through a combination of the three, there are things that parents can do to help them be more successful. Knowing what to do can help make a world a difference and reduce the struggling. “Many parents are aware of the way their kids are struggling with school over this school year,” explains David Florence, professor and founder of The Oxford Method, a community that offers tutoring services around the country. “Rather than let them fall behind, it’s a good idea to take action and do what you can to help them keep up and even pull ahead.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 93% of households with school-age children report that their kids have engaged in some sort of distance learning during the pandemic. They also report that the vast shift in the way kids are learning has also caused digital inequality because some kids don’t have access to computers and/or the Internet. Whether students are learning online or in class, there are things parents can do to help them get a good education. HERE 7 WAYS TO HELP ENSURE YOUR CHILD GETS A GOOD EDUCATION: 1. SLEEP. It’s crucial for a child to get enough sleep each night, which will help them to be more focused, as well as improve their behavior, quality of life, and mental and physical health. The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that children ages 6-12 should get 9-12 hours of sleep per night, and teens ages 13-18 should get 8-10 hours of sleep per night.

4. SHOW THEM HOW. Oftentimes, kids don’t know how to effectively study for a test or to take notes when they are in class. Take the time to show them how to do it effectively, as well as how to stay organized with their schooling. When students are organized, they are more likely to succeed. 5. ASK THEM QUESTIONS. Be sure to ask your kids how it is going, if they got their homework done, if they need any help, or if there’s anything they need to be more successful. They like to know that you are interested in how they are doing, so it’s good to show an active interest. 6. GET INVOLVED. It’s always a good idea if you can get involved with the school and have good communication with the teacher. That way you will be aware of what is going on and know how to help your child more. Teachers love it when parents take an active interest in their child’s education.

The Oxford Method believes that education is the great equalizer and the best gift you can give the next generation. Subject areas include science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), as well as business, social studies, psychology, English, history, public speaking, study methods, test taking, and more. It also has a non-profit sector of its community, which offers tutoring services and computers to underprivileged students. Its relationship-based education helps everyone, including those who need financial assistance and those with special needs. 7. PRAISE YOUR KIDS. Help kids to know what they are doing is right or what they are doing is wrong. Praising and encouraging the kids builds their confidence and helps them to succeed as they grow. “Just about every parent has the ability to help kids succeed with their academics, even if it’s ensuring they have the tools they need to succeed,” added Florence. “We help parents be successful, even those who don’t have the funds to pay for a tutor. Our mission is to help as many students to achieve as we can.” The Oxford Method has over 100 tutors around the country, covering all subject areas. 2. TEACH VALUE. It usually starts at home whether or not a child values an education. Parents who want their kids to get a good education should instill a love of learning in their children and teach them to value the education they are getting.

3. GET THEM HELP. If your child is struggling, you may be able to help them, but there also comes a time when kids need a tutor to step in. A good tutor can make a world of difference in ensuring that a child gets a good education. They can help ensure that students will not fall behind and that they will get the foundation they need to move on in a subject.

Instructors have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, with many of them having a master’s degree, PhD, and at least four years of teaching experience. The Oxford Method works with their nonprofit, Social Actualization, Inc., by giving them 10% of all profits. The funds are used to provide free computers, high-speed internet, and instruction to underprivileged families in urban and rural America. Plus, 40% of their instructors are PhDs, 40% have a master’s degree, and 20% have only a bachelor’s degree.

Jason Derulo Jena Frumes’ Gender Reveal in the Bahamas

54 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

Jason Joel Desrouleaux (better known as Jason Derulo) has always been a fantastic songwriter, dancer, and singer. No doubt, the 31-year-old megastar is a talent to reckon with. He's done well for himself, not just in the music industry, but in cupid's department, too, it seems. Last year, Derulo made the headlines after revealing how he met with Jena Frumes, his girlfriend. While many were battling to survive quarantine and the pandemic, Derulo met Frumes and found love at a gym. It was love at first sight, and well, the rest is history. Jena Frumes shot into the limelight when her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Jesse Lingard, ended. Soon enough, Jena and Jason became TikTok's favorite quarantine couple. The lovebirds kept serenading the internet with cute couple vibes as they videoed themselves catching lover's fun together. All that quarantine love-up didn't end there. It has metamorphosed into something that would strengthen their bond even more. We've got big news, people—Jason and Jena are expecting a baby! Yes, we know the baby's gender too.

It’s a Boy! The lovebirds have been visibly excited about their life together since March 2021, when they spilled the beans

about expecting their first child together. Taking to his Instagram to share the exciting news, the singer uploaded a compilation video of them with Robin Thicke's Lost without you playing in the background. Walking down the beach holding hands, kissing, locked in each other's arms, they couldn't have chosen better background music. The video showed Jason kissing Jena's bump and ended in a “coming soon” imprint on the sand. Jason captioned the clip, “Couldn't be more excited for this new chapter in our lives @jenafrumes @bahamarresorts.” Meanwhile, a trip to Jena's page shows a picture where she held her baby bump on the beach and captioning it “Mom & Dad.” Whoosh! We aren't teary—you are. The pregnancy announcement left fans wondering if Jena is pregnant with a boy or a girl. But thankfully,

together gender reveal bash. In her video upload, her caption read, “Thank you to @bahamarresorts for throwing us a special gender reveal for the family.”

The Due Date, Baby's Name, and More The hoopla around the baby boy's anticipated arrival didn't end with the gender reveal. Frumes is holding the anticipation bar high as she's making her fans guess her baby's EDD. “Thank you to everyone for all the love we are so grateful & excited for our baby love to arrive… can you guess the due date?” She said in yet another post. One of her commenters wrote, “Can you have a baby Zodiac reveal?!!” Hilarious. Taking a lucky guess, we believe that the couples' boy will arrive sometime in August or September. Since they already know the baby's gender, the pregnancy should be around three or four months. Got the math? While the couple hasn't given any clue as to their boy's name, everyone is guessing a name beginning with a J. That makes perfect sense since the couple has the same initials. We're keeping our fingers crossed. What's next for the couple after their baby boy is finally born? No one knows. But we are content with basking in their newfound bliss and rooting for them. the couple didn't keep their fans waiting for too long. Jason and Jason announced a gender reveal in a video post on his IG. In the clip, Jason disclosed that he was expecting a boy because his girlfriend's baby bump “is sitting kinda low and it looks like a boy.” Frumes, however, reckoned it was a girl. She said, “I heard that when you're clumsy and moody, it's a girl.” While this video left their fans speculating, the Gender Reveal Bash finally pulled all the assumptions to a halt. Derulo and Frumes are expecting a boy! Tada!!

The Gender Reveal Bash One thing we've learned about Derulo—he sure knows how to make an announcement. The Gender Reveal party turned out to be an extravagant bash that we just weren't expecting. The video Derulo later posted showed a costume-themed party with lots of impressively costumed dancers and live music. The location was beautifully bustling with bright pink, blue, and white colors when the couple got in. Amidst trumpets blowing, costumers dancing, and fireworks in the air, the singer, announced that they were expecting a boy. "It’s blue! It’s a boy!” Derulo exclaimed in excitement. Frumes later took to her page to thank Bahamas Resorts for a well-put-

Jena Frumes hasn't always been lucky with love. First, she dated NFL star, Antonio Brown who left her for his ex. Next came Jesse Lingard, who she left after she found he was cheating on her. Thankfully, she seems to have finally found happiness in Jason Derulo, and with the birth of their baby, we hope they take their relationship further by signing the dotted lines.

UNHEALTHY DISTRACTION Written by Francheska Moreland You’ve made the decision, to get your sh** together. No more playing around, no more procrastinating, no more struggling. You’re busy doing your due diligence; studying, researching, sharing and promoting your work or performing for that raise! You know, staying focused! You are changing. Becoming a better you. People are noticing, they are impressed, they are complimenting. Some…get as far as pulling a casual conversation out of you. You enjoy that conversation. Then one, turns into two, four, six conversations, because you’re human, and you want it!! But the question is, do you NEED it…right now? You fall for the curiosity, of this new ‘thing’, and you find yourself being slowly thrown off course. You start losing your ideas, your creativity gets shot and you just get lazy about your work. When in self development mode: you may not be the most favored person. In order to push forward, you must shed the weight of all your past behaviors. Some people just cannot come on this ride with you. They will not like being shunned, ignored or put to the back of the line. But this is the sacrifice you would have to make, if you want to see change. Some things must be forgotten about or discarded. Some emotions and old habits must be put to rest. People will love what you are doing and want to be a part of your life and your work. Things will start looking extra shiny and tempting to indulge. But it is important that you put everyone and everything through the qualification process before they can come along with you on this ride:

Does this inspire me? Does it challenge me? Does it motivate me? Does it teach me? Will it help me grow in MY direction? Can it create opportunity? Does it introduce quality to my life?

A good friend of mine and I had a conversation about this. And the summary of this convo was: in order to elevate your life, you must elevate your surroundings. Since then, I’ve decided to go the extra mile, to put myself in positions that would only help me; not confuse me or make me think twice about the person I’m becoming. I am building the strength and courage to be okay with walking away from the people and things that doesn’t serve my purpose. The scripture Proverbs 13:20 says: “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.” Chaplain Ronnie Melancon Says: “Show me your friends, I’ll show you your future.”

Cowan Protects Her

"Energy" with Exuberant new single

Reggae singer Naomi Cowan released "Energy", her first single of 2021. Produced by Izy Beats (Koffee "Toast", Jorja Smith & Burna Boy "Be Honest") the upbeat r&b and reggae laced track serves as a cautionary yet charming mantra of protecting your peace and keeping your vibrations, aura and confidence high no matter what. "Energy was inspired by the first time I was ghosted by someone I dated. It had never happened to me before. Communication is one of my primary love languages, so when it happened - no cap, it was shocking, disrespectful & it really hurt," says Naomi on the meaning behind the lyrics. "I had to move past it in a healthy way. I had to dig deep & realize that when someone disrespects you in that way, it's on them - not on you. I knew what I brought to the table. So I tapped into a certain Energy that I didn't know I had inside of me, the kind that doesn't overthink, it doesn't cower in shame, it knows I am more than enough and it just keeps moving," she continued.

at The Belcour Lodge, Irish Town, Jamaica and directed by Kia Moses, an emerging award-winning filmmaker and video director who directed two previous videos by Naomi. JAZ ELISE Proclaims

"Turn me up like radio"

The burgeoning genre-blending Jamaican upstart Jaz Elise releases the video for her latest single “Radio” off her debut EP The Golden Hour, out now via In.Digg.Nation Collective/Six Course Music/RCA Records.

60 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

Jaz speaks on the inspiration behind the song. “Sometimes during this time period when we can’t be around someone who we have that emotional or intimate connection with, it can be frustrating. “Radio” was my way of channeling those feelings. When push comes to shove we have to just let people know how we feel and what we want. It’s a fun and freeing song.” In addition to “Radio,” Jaz delivers breezy confident melodies throughout her 7-track EP, whether it be the self-loving opener “Elevated” or her recently released hit “Fresh & Clean” feat. Govana. The singer also practices a positive mindset in order to execute the vision on “Good Over Evil.” The latter part of The Golden Hour is filled with slow burns, allowing her soft sultry vocals and honest songwriting to float over spacious and thoughtful instrumentation. “After 3” is a cosmic exchange between her and rising singer Mortimer, and “Breathe” soothes the soul over light jazz and dub grooves. The EP’s infectious mix of beats are composed by a variety of In.Digg.Nation Collective’s go-to producers including IzyBeats, Natural High, J.L.L., iotosh, Ziah .Push and Protoje. Jaz Elise explains the deeper meaning behind The Golden Hour. “Photographers speak of this peak, magical moment at sunrise and sunset where the sun casts a golden hue in the sky. Almost like earth and sky is just washed in this mood and feeling- this magic. This is known as the golden hour. The feelings and emotions that manifest for me when I’m looking at the sky during the golden hour is how I feel when listening to this EP and I want people to

feel when listening to this body of work. To me it’s like this beautiful collection of feelings and moments. A mood, a meditation, a reflection and a vibe all in one. I have put my all in it. My dreams, my hopes, my feelings, my experiences, my vulnerabilities, my pain. Everything. I am looking forward to sharing these feelings and stories with people. You’re gonna hear the most personal music so far from me and none of it was possible without the other creative hands that came together to make this project possible.” Jaz Elise is the newest member of In.Digg.Nation Collective’s roster, the record label and management company founded by Grammynominated artist Protoje. She joins Lila Iké, Sevana and Protoje in the label’s joint venture with Six Course Music and RCA Records. JAZ ELISE Born Jasmine Taylor, Jaz Elise grew up with her parents and two older sisters. Her first introduction to music was singing in the church choir as a young child. Her father, a gospel musician who plays the organ, piano and guitar and creates compositions for their church choir, laid the foundation for Jaz’s musical aspirations. Even after graduating with a degree in Psychology from The University of the West Indies (Mona), Jaz still had a yearning to pursue the arts. She joined a local performing arts program, Quilt, where she honed her skills as a dancer and singer. At one of the showcases, she caught the attention of the young rising producer J.L.L.. The two promising creatives collaborated on her first two singles, "For You" (2018) and "Fresh and Clean" (2019). Later in 2019, she delivered the title track on the all-female riddim Rock & Groove, produced by Protoje and J Vibe. In 2020, she updated "Fresh & Clean" with a verse from dancehall sensation Govana. With only a handful of songs in her repertoire and an undeniable knack for fusing soul, R&B, reggae and dancehall, the aspiring singer steps into the spotlight this year with her debut EP The Golden Hour.

JESSE ROYAL

ANNOUNCES SOPHOMORE ALBUM

ROYAL “RICH FOREVER” WITH THE RELEASE OF HIS NEW SINGLE

FEATURING VYBZ KARTEL

Jamaican reggae star Jesse Royal unveils his latest single “Rich Forever” featuring dancehall’s self-proclaimed “World Boss” Vybz Kartel. The song is from his anticipated sophomore album Royal, slated for June 11th, 2021 via Easy Star Records. This crossgenre collaboration between both artists unifies people's differences to support a common goal - to be “forever royal.” It serves as a reminder of the internal strength and mental fortitude human beings possess, which prepares them for success in a society designed for their failure. “Rich Forever is a divergence from identifying with the degradation dispersed for generations by them and those who oppose reality and simply put, it is a conversation about restoration of our royalty and reclaiming dignity,” states Jesse Royal. The beat, produced by Jamaican upstart iotosh (responsible for Protoje’s “Deliverance” and “Self Defense” and Jaz Elise’s “After 3” feat. Mortimer), starts off with eerie keyboards then introduces percussion drums and glides into a Trap-esque finish. It’s a classic representation of the current movement in Jamaican music, a melting pot of genres while still innately blending in the native sounds of the island.
