editor's page Hey, #POSHgirls New Year, New Outlook… The end of one year and the start of another naturally inspires us to reflect. Prior to the New Year, those of us working girls could be found wrapping up projects while wrapping presents, planning strategic initiatives for the coming year while planning family celebrations, and reflecting on personal accomplishments while analysing ROIs. Without stating the obvious, 2020 was a challenging year marked by historical events and unforeseen changes to work and home lives; it has also been a year of learning for all of us, as we frequently heard the term ‘pivot’. A new year is now here, and if there is one key thing learned in 2020, it is too not take anything for granted. With each new issue, in an effort to connect with you in this space. I pondered to myself for weeks prior, trying to think about what meaningful thing I could share. There has been so much loss of loved ones, loss of employment, and even loss of confidence. To those experiencing loss, I share this, "And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast." - 1 Peter 5:10. Our new issue of the magazine features a cover that celebrates how far we as women have come. As Caribbean woman, I am inspired by the story of Kamala Harris. With this level of change coming in my lifetime, I would say it is time to upgrade our outlook on life. In today’s world, despite all the disparity and negativity, a woman that looks like me and is relatable to me in her Caribbean heritage can achieve what once seemed impossible – to become the Vice President of the United States of America.

20NICKI MINAJ FROM

Fashion Moments

Since her first album, Pink Friday, Nicki Minaj has undoubtedly held her place as the queen of Rap. Her impact on the music industry is remarkable, and she has paved the way for other superstars like Cardi B, Megan Thee Stallion, and many others in their rap careers. The impact this rapper has had on the music industry alone is unparalleled. Her style has also played a significant role in her iconic position in the industry.

4. Sweet, Sassy, and Weird This look probably got Nicki Minaj a lot of weird stares, but it is undeniably one of her boldest looks. She wore a jacket with pom-pom balls all over it for Carolina Herra's spring ready-to-wear show in 2012, and she looks classy sitting next to Anna Wintour.

5. Bang, Bang, Banging Hot! Nicki Minaj celebrated the Grammys Awards nomination for the songs 'Anaconda' and 'Bang Bang' by showing up in a jawdropping black Tom Ford deep V-neck dress with a fringe. She killed this look, and although her songs didn't win any awards, her dress deserved an award.

6. Pretty in Pink

1. Queen of the Wild Nicki's outrageous style came under the spotlight when she donned a headto-toe leopard Givenchy outfit paired with a puffy wild wig to the mid-2010 Grammy Awards.

2. Out of this World Sexy

3. Not-Your-Regular Japanese Doll!

We aren't sure what Nicki was trying to go for with this look, but she pulled it off. Rocking a neonembellished Manish Arora dress, Nicki looked different at the 2010 American Music Awards. She spiced up her look with blond hair and pink and gold strappy sandals.

Nicki held nothing back when she wore an outlandish Japaneseinspired outfit, complete with a cartoon-patterned face mask to the 2011 MTV VMAs.

7. Holy Crimson, it’s Versace! A lot of criticism came with Nicki Minaj's look at the 2012 Grammy Awards. She showed up dressed in a crimson red cape from Versace reminiscent of the Pope's signature outfit. This look was odd and exciting at the same time.

8. Slaying in Alexander McQueen Nicki Minaj showed up to the 2014 MTV movie award in a simple, black Alexander McQueen dress and left the world stunned at this look. Paired with a simple beauty look, this red carpet look is one of the most popular Nicki moments because this predefined her usual style.

Minaj went for a sweet look in this very pink and plastic outfit, which she paired with a pink beret, pink lipstick, and platinum blond hair for her Pink Friday, Roman: Reloaded album launch in 2012.

Nicki Steals the Spotlight; Always! Let’s take a trip down memory lane and check out twenty of her popular fashion moments over the past decade."

9. Turning Heads in Snake Skin Clearly, classy and minimal works great with Nicki as she looks stunning in a Saint Laurent mini at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards. The sequins on the dress add sparkle to this simple look, and it is evident that Nicki came ready to turn heads.

13. An Absolute Diva at the Tidal X's Concert

11. Black, Bold, and Stunning!

10. Nicki as a Halloween Fairy One of our favorite Nicki Minaj looks is this sequinencrusted leotard paired with a tutu, which she wore for Halloween to a nightclub in Las Vegas in 2015.

Nicki is known for her bold fashion statements, and she proved that in her 2016 Met Gala look where the rapper wore this BDSM inspired outfit decorated with black belts and glitter.

12. Queening in Royal Blue Although Nicki Minaj was not nominated for anything at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, that didn't stop her from looking spectacular in a full-length sheer royal blue gown by Bao Tranchi. This look left a lot of fans wowed, and she stole the spotlight with this dress.

Did someone say bold and daring? That was Nicki Minaj when she showed up to the Tidal X's 2016 philanthropic concert in a sheer Maison Margiela lace bodysuit.

14. Nicki said Purr, purr! One iconic moment in all of Nicki's fashionable era is her look for the Oscar de la Renta’s S/S 17 show. She wore the $19,000 fur coat to the fashion show, and we can definitely say she looked like money and cool all at the same time.

16. A Real-life Barbie Doll Nicki wore a latex bubblegum pink jumpsuit, which she paired with silver locks and calf-length hair for the 2017 MTV VMAs. We love this Barbie-inspired look, and it remains one of our favorites.

17. Iconic in Red at the 2017 Met Gala Barbz all over the world couldn't get enough of Nicki when she showed up to the 2017 Met Gala in a red hot Oscar De la Renta gown inspired by the evening's theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

15. Drop-dead Gorgeous in Leather and Spikes Nicki Minaj went full baddie in this daring leather suit from head to heels, even enclosing her face in a spike-encrusted mask for the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.

19. Nicki as a Sexy Tiger-girl

20. Pink Ballerina

18. Nicki’s A-Game Outfit

No matter what this queen is rocking, she manages to look absolutely stunning. It’s obvious, the sexy rapper completely eats up her looks; we’re here for it, Nicki!

11

No one can deny that Nicki Minaj is the queen of extra, and she proved this to be accurate by showing up to the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets game in 2018 in a black Anna Wintour-style sunglasses, black latex dress, and silver jacket.

Pink is Nicki Minaj's color as she dazzles into the 2019 Met Gala wearing a campy ballerina outfit with a long train, gorgeously abiding by the “Camp” theme.

Shoma Persad DESIGNER

on her life,

building a fashion brand,

and what every woman should have in her wardrobe… By Janette Brin

12 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

The Caribbean’s fashion industry is seemly buzzing right now. From Jamaica to Trinidad, there is a wave of new designers emerging in a big way. Combined with the events occurring in the United States, I believe there is a consumer mind shift. One that is reenergizing the idea for us to shop Black, shop Caribbean. At the same time, designers more and more designers are raising the bar and introducing their brands to the world. This obviously makes it a great time for creatives to challenge the odds. Trinidad’s Shoma Persad, as bold and highly inspiring entrepreneur/designer is doing just that. I had the opportunity to catch up with her. [many thanks to my girl Tenille Clark for the connect] here is what Shoma had to say …

POSHfashion Talk to me about your Caribbean background, the beliefs and customs that you were raised on and how they might have influenced your career path... From a very young age, I’ve always had a creative spark and admired beautiful things, and fashion has always been around me. So as I got older I really got a better understanding for how special the beauty of the Caribbean was in the eyes of the rest of the world. I was raised in a household to believe that I could accomplish anything with the right mindset. I graduated from Ryerson University in Toronto with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing and Business Development, and I think that really set a great foundation for my goals. My academic achievements provided me with a unique opportunity to deeply understand how to not only package products in fashion, but also listen to different audiences and connect human experiences.

When you reflect on your teenage or college years, can you recall your most fond moment of dress up... Every day is a moment to dress up! I’ve had many of those moments, and I’m sure you have, too. Women should always have the opportunity to feel beautiful from the inside out, and I try to remember that in everything that I design. We shouldn’t need a special occasion to feel special.

The interesting thing about growth is that all of the past challenges and successes you experience really do add up and prepare you for your next pivotal step, be it inevitable or unplanned. When I co-founded my last fashion company with my business partner in 2014, I felt really good because I was finally getting an opportunity to marry two loves: fashion design and marketing. Although we went our separate ways, I think it taught me that fashion design was more than a career – it was a passion that I wanted to grow with and evolve in. Now that Shoma The Label has launched its first collection, I feel like that the experience has allowed my creative evolution to take shape and share it with the world.

CARIBBEAN POSH • INAUGURAL FEATURE

Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you knew you were going to be a fashion designer?

13

POSHfashion How would you define fashion and what it means to you? For me, fashion is a form of human expression, it is wholeness, it is beauty without apology. As a Caribbean woman, I always lean into my love and adoration for prints – it’s about showcasing a balance between the two. I aim to create garments for the modern woman as an avenue to vibrantly express the beauty and style of my Caribbean culture through fashion design.

What have you found to be critical in building a fashion brand? Understanding what you represent in your aesthetic and knowing who you are designing for are really essential needs for building your fashion brand. Those two elements are a reflection of the foundation for your brand identity. Without a story a tell and an audience to tell it to, you really have nothing. What was the inspiration behind the line? You have a degree in Marketing and Business Development. How has this benefited you and was it a part of your original plan?

14 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

My degree has definitely helped me in various parts of understanding the fashion industry from a business perspective. Being empowered by a fantastic team allows me to be very hands on every aspect of Shoma The Label – from production, to design, to photography and even styling. The marketing side of my brain is very active, so in telling the story of my first collection, Tropical Masquerade, I wanted to explore an authentic depiction of what Trinidad and Tobago’s identity is all about. That academic experience really helped me to appreciate refined, sophisticated approaches to my design work, which has always been a key aesthetic for me. I won’t say that my university degree was a part of my original plan, but I will say that it definitely aligned with who I am.

My first collection designed under Shoma The Label, called Tropical Masquerade, is an ode to Trinidad and Tobago and the beauty of our twin-island Republic. This collection embraces an “open-faced” aesthetic of a tropical theme, so there’s a lot of inspiration from our natural resources - from our flora and fauna, to the North Coast beaches and everything in between. I collaborated with illustrator James Hackett to create an exclusive print for the collection and teamed up with Sanian Lewis of Sanianitos and We Dream In Colour to custom-make beautiful earrings mirroring the same print design. My brand focus is always global, and the intention is to bring Trinbagonian culture and our region’s creativity to life through fashion to the rest of the world and to create unique pieces that reflect the many chapters of our diverse, rich Caribbean story.

POSHfashion Name a celebrity that you could see wearing your line? I can definitely see Rihanna and super fashionista Blair Eadie enjoying the Tropical Masquerade experience. Rihanna is the classic Caribbean woman who has really helped to put our region on the map not just for music, but for fashion and beauty as well. She has a great way of bringing sophistication to every occasion. As for Blair, it’s hard to not notice how versatile her style is, and she’s always on point with her fashion choices.

For women living outside of Trinidad, can you talk a bit about the ordering process? Our official website, www.shomathelabel.com is open and ready to receive orders no matter where you are in the world. Full details on are now available on the platform and placing order requests and payment options are easy to access. All pieces are made to order and can take up to 14 days for processing. We carry from XS to XL and there is an option to email us at info@shomathelabel. com for sizing inquiries not listed. It was very important for us to create a retail platform that was easy to navigate. We’re also happy to receive customer inquiries during business hours by telephone or WhatsApp at 1-868-35-SHOMA (1-868-357-4662).

Why was e-commerce important for your brand? Talk to me about a piece in your collection that absolutely every woman should have in their wardrobe? The Manzanilla Breeze Maxi is perfect for any occasion and perfectly embodies Caribbean chic. You can go from a brunch with the girls to an intimate micro-wedding; it was designed for multi-wear and wardrobe longevity in mind. Dress it up with our Heliconia earrings and you’ve got yourself a complete showstopping look. I have to say though, that all of the Tropical Masquerade looks were designed to be staple pieces that will never go out of style. Timelessness is a key cornerstone of the Shoma The Label values.

Shoma The Label is locally inspired but internationally tailored, and it’s important we recognize the need to be accessible to the world. Our e-commerce platform allows for the total Caribbean brand experience, and allows our customer to totally immerse themselves into the flair and style of the brand. Of course, that includes our website (www.shomathelabel.com) as well as our social media platforms @shomathelabel.

for 2020 BELIF THE TRUE CREAM AQUA BOMB Hydration is key when it comes to having amazing skin and the Aqua Bomb provides you with just that, Intensive hydration. This water – base moisturizer that has a beautifully light gel texture that just glides over your face melting into your skin just in a matter of minutes. It helps to minimize the appearance of pores giving you that instant glow due to its increased hydration levels. I also do find that it actually helps a little with oil control while giving that quenched skin feel. This moisturizer has been a game changer for me. My skin absolutely loves it.

BELIF MOISTURIZING EYE BOMB Eye creams are a must for me these days and the Belif Moisturizing Eye Bomb is my new fav. This eye cream is light weight and is proven to provide 26 hours of moisture and boosts the elasticity and resilience of the skin around the eyes even when wearing makeup. If you are a avid makeup wearer like me, priming the eye correctly is essential. It often times help to prevent your concealer from cracking and helps to avoid that dry appearance under the eye cause by setting powders. A quick tip is to always let your under-eye cream seep in for about 90 seconds before putting concealer on.

FENTY BEAUTY CHEEK OUT FREESTYLE CREAM BLUSH IN COOL BERRY Long gone are the days when having a matte finish makeup look was a must. These days with every makeup application there must be a glow. I am always on a mission to having a dewy finish supple look skin even when wearing makeup. With that being said, during lock down I discovered Fenty Beauty Cream Blushes and fell in love. Although cream, this blush has a non- greasy consistency that melts into the skin giving you an effortless, natural – looking wash of colour. PORTABLE NANO IONIC FACIAL STEAMER Incorporating a facial steamer into my skincare routine has been game changer. One great benefit to the facial steamer is hydration. Our skin cells are like fish and needs water to live. So infusing water into your skincare routine allows for hydration. The steam also opens your pores allowing product to penetrate deeper into the skin. When time permits, after cleansing, steam before applying your serums and moisturizer.

of my best makeup hacks

for OILY SKIN that still WORKS TODAY By MUADonellaD

Wash your face before you apply your makeup

As someone who suffers from oily skin, one of my best skin prep secret is using a clay mask that contains charcoal before I start my makeup, my current favourite is the Olay Detox Black Charcoal Clay Face Mask. I use this

If you’re someone like me with oily skin then you’re quite familiar with the drawbacks – intimately. From always looking sweaty to smudged mascara, to oily eyebrows and breakouts, oily skin isn’t a breeze, but it can be managed if you know how to work with your oily skin, and not against it, you can keep it under control, and even make it work to your advantage.

Incorporate Hyaluronic Acid into your skin care regime

Find the right primer for our skin time and learn how to layer By a show of hands, how many of us thought the ‘matter’ the primer the ‘better’it’ll absorb more oils? When I first started wearing a full face of makeup, I thought, the ‘matter’ the better to keep the oil monster at bay! But by the end of the day I was still a grease ball ! even after doing touch ups throughout the course of the day. Why? Because I was drying the hell out of my skin! And if you are doing this you probably

Yes the title says makeup hacks but what’s good makeup without good skincare?, so this is a bonus tip! Let’s say it’s a makeup hack and a skin care in one. The key to good makeup application is not only being diligent with your skincare regime but using the right products. I’ve realized a great improvement in my makeup at the end of the day since I started to incorporate hyaluronic acid into my skincare routine which directly affects my oil production and the longevity of my makeup. I started using it at the beginning of this year and it has really improved my skin overall. I apply mine just before my Neutrogena Hydro Boost Water Gel Moisturizer at mornings.

Sounds strange right? I started doing this recently and it's been a game changer! Especially when wearing a more hydrating or natural finish foundation. ( Like the NARS Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation or the Fenty Pro Filt'r Hydrating Foundation.) Once I have applied my base (primer, foundation, concealer and powder), I set my face with a matte setting spray (before I apply my bronzer, highlight, blush etc.) Once I have sprayed my face, I take my damp beauty sponge and press the setting spray into my skin . I then apply the rest of my face makeup (blush, highlighter) and set my face again - this time with a hydrating setting spray. This little trick normally keeps my makeup from looking too flat and powdery and allow the makeup sink seamlessly into my skin for a more natural look.

It's a natural habit we all have, but I try my best to avoid touching my face at all costs! (this includes mid-morning and mid-afternoon touch ups)The oils (and germs) from my hands get onto my skin and into my pores. It can lead to skin irritation or even break down my foundation or powders, which means grease city by midday! You'd be surprised how long your makeup can truly last when you keep your hands away from it.

Hydration…Hydration…. Hydration

5

I know adding moisture to my skin sounds counter-intuitive, but here’s what I’ve learned, adding moisture onto my already slick face actually work wonders! Here’s the thing, a lot of us think because our skin is oily, we don’t need to add hydration but truth be told your skin needs that moisture! Especially when wearing a more matte finish foundation. Once I’ve washed my face, I then go with my Farsali Rose Gold Elixir and finish off with my Neutrogena Hydro Boost water gel moisturizer before adding my makeup.

Oily skin has been the bane of my beauty and skin care existence for as long as I can remember. I've tried every tip and trick you can imagine to counteract my oil production and to keep my makeup matte and shine free.. It wasn't until I got serious about my skin care starting doing my research that I noticed things started to change. Once I learned that oily skin is actually dehydrated skin I had a skin care epiphany and began approaching my skin in a completely different manner. I stopped focusing on controlling my oil and started focusing on balancing my skin. Hydration has become the most important aspect of my daily skin care routine. ( although on some days I believe I can do better) I have also completely changed the way I not only apply my makeup, but, what I'm using, and how I use it. My skin is far from perfect but incorporating these few steps have really made a difference.

Need a flawless, well-highlighted makeup look? Your makeup brush is your secret weapon! Brushes not only allow for easy application, but they also make it easy for you to blend the harsh lines or creases that your foundation may cause. If you are a makeup enthusiast, there’s no better investment than a set of quality makeup brushes (we mean that!) Whether you’re a novice or pro at makeup, there’s only so much you can do without a really good makeup brush. When something is good, it’s good. We did some exploring and have found some quality makeup brushes the people love. Check out our list of the most-loved makeup brushes based on popular demand.

1. BOBBI BROWN FOUNDATION BRUSH If you are a true makeup enthusiast, then this name should not sound unfamiliar to you. The Bobbi Brown foundation brush is designed to give you a flawless foundation application. The brush is perfectly angled to reach every part of your face without creating creases. They produce some of the best brushes available in the beauty world, so it is not a surprise that they’re on our list. It will make the perfect addition to your brush collection.

2. ZOEVA ROSE GOLD VOL.2 104 BUFFER BRUSH This foundation brush will work with your foundation so smooth it'll feel like you are spreading a soft sheet on your face. This ZOEVA brush has a flat top that makes it so easy to apply foundation. The dense bristles work better than a buffer in ensuring your makeup is flawless and well blended. The bristles are dense but soft so that there is no harshness as you apply the foundation onto your face. The flat top brush effortlessly picks any foundation of any texture without absorbing the product.

3. FENTY FULL-BODIED FOUNDATION BRUSH Yes. The queen made it to our little list. Fenty beauty has emerged as a top beauty company even though they joined the industry not too long ago. Our Queen Rihanna went all out! This foundation brush is the supreme tool when it comes to applying foundation with ease. This full-coverage brush will give you a clean and evenly toned finish. The synthetic bristles are super soft to the touch and will apply little pressure to your face. It's affordable, and it's durable, it's Fenty, what else are you looking for?

4. REAL TECHNIQUES STIPPLING BRUSH Pretty sure you wonder what a stippling brush is (and if you are not, hey there, Makeup guru!) The Real Techniques Stippling brush should be a part of your brush collection because it helps to lock in your foundation and concealer. It is also very affordable. This type of brush has two layers of bristles. The top layer helps to pick up your makeup product and the bottom layer, which is denser than the top, pushes the product onto your skin without absorbing it.

5. HANATSUBAKI HAKE POLISHING FACE BRUSH The petal-like design of this four in one brush makes it very desirable to add to your brush collection. This brush features four different petal sections that help to contour your face while it smoothens your makeup all at the same time. This brush is portable, luxuriously soft, and comes with Hidden Core technology. It helps to control pressure on application for a seamless makeup finish. Although it is a bit pricey, it is definitely worth its amount because you get a flawless and well-blended look after use.

Yes! Bobbi Brown made our list again. We can't get enough. The synthetic eyeliner brush is designed with a slim, tapered tip suitable for powdered or gelled eyeliner. It produces perfect and precise lining without using any other makeup material. The best thing about this brush is that the bristles do not fray or wear out. Although the bristles are soft to the touch, they are very durable and will last for a long time. Be sure to get one!

Buying a complete makeup brush set is one way to save cost. The Sigma brush set comes with brushes for foundation, contour, highlighter, concealer, blush, and any other makeup process you need a brush for!

8. MORPHE M427 TAPERED DUO BLUSH BRUSH You don’t have to break the bank to get this cute blush brush. It is easy to use and accessible to both professionals and beginners. The comfortable handle makes it easy to grip while you apply your blush onto your cheeks. The Synthetic bristles provide effective blending and give a finished result.

You can easily use a beauty blender or even your fingers to apply makeup to your faces, but for a clean and flawless job, you need to get at least one makeup brush. The brushes on our list are accessible and easily affordable. Get yourself a secret makeup weapon today!

With little bucks, you can get this great brush and put it to good use.

Izhani Rosa

Personality: What three words best describe you?

Young women can empower one another by supporting, loving, and encouraging their fellow females to express themselves and to obtain success in their goals.

Empathetic, strong- minded, benevolent

Who are the most inspiring women in your life and why?

What quality do you like most about yourself and why?

The most inspiring women in my life is Dr. Rizalina Batenga because she is an extremely successful and respected woman and doctor in our community. She is a hard worker and continues to learn and grow in the medical field.

The quality I like most about myself is my empathy because I feel that it is very important to be able to understand others and see their points of view. For what in your life do you feel most grateful? I am most grateful for my family because they have always supported me in all of my endeavours and have continuously been my biggest fans. What motivates you and why? My motivation stems from within because I have a desire to help others and become SOMEBODY.

Of the most celebrated women in the world, whom do you admire the most and why? Of the most celebrated women I admire the most, Michelle Obama is definitely my number one. I admire her because she, as the first lady, never stood behind her husband, but next to him. She is an independent woman who always fights for equality and justice. Who would you list as you’re most inspiring VI Women and why? My list of top three VI women are the three Rebel Queens; Queen Mary, Queen Agnes, and Queen Mathilda. These three women, some of the most active in the St, Croix Fireburn, inspire me to stand up for human rights and equality for all regardless of race, ethnicity, sex or any other factor. What is your idea of happiness and success? My idea of happiness and success consists of reaching all my career goals and aspirations. This includes having a family, creating a safe environment for youth around the country, and spreading awareness about mental health, What is your current career goal and why? My current career goal is to attend graduate school to obtain my PhD in Clinical Psychology. After, I would like to practice as a clinical psychologist but I would also like to build a school that promotes inclusivity for children with physical and intellectual/ learning disabilities. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be and why? If I could change one thing I would change the worlds tendency to marginalize those that are ‘different.’ I would completely eradicate prejudice and judgment of minority groups including certain religions, sexualities, races and ethnicities. If the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands invited you to chat with him, what would your top three questions for him be?

How are you feeling at this moment?

What is one of the coolest experiences you have had?

At this moment I am a little overwhelmed with COVID- 19, however, I am trying my best to make the best of the situation.

One of the best experiences I have ever had was traveling to the Philippines. On this trip I met several children that my family sponsors and I hosted field days which included monetary prizes that contributed to their schooling funds. I was exposed to extreme poverty at the age of 7, which made me very grateful for all of the things and opportunities I had in life.

In your opinion, what does it mean to empower women? In my opinion, women empowerment is all about uplifting our fellow women, it is about creating an international sisterhood that supports and encourages women to be their best selves. Women empowerment teaches women how to love each other and themselves. What are ways that young women in particular can empower each other?

What is the most treasured memory from your childhood? My most treasured memories from my childhood were the peaceful moments I spent with my grandmother watching hundreds of white butterflies fly around her yard.

Pageantry: Why did you decide to compete for the Miss St. Croix Pageant? I decided to compete in the Miss St. Croix Pageant because of the platform segment. As Miss St. Croix you are a pillar in the community and your voice matters. My platform, the destigmatization of mental health needed to be heard. What advice would you give someone who is entering a pageant for the first time? Advice I would give someone entering a pageant for the first time would be: “Have fun. Whether you win or lose pageantry is quite an experience. You learn, you laugh, you cry but in the end, once you give it your all and you get on the stage, that alone is an accomplishment.”

together. This is not only represented in Parade and J’ouvert but is reflected in the food, music, and in the way it brings the community together. Aside from your 2019 win, what would you say are some highlights from St. Croix’s 2019 celebrations and why? I think our entire 2019 festival was a highlight because not only was it one of our safest carnival seasons but there were so many people involved in planning and creating a well-organized Festival Season. It was extremely successful and really brought the entire community together as one. Of all the St. Croix Festival activities, what do you look forward to the most?

Reflecting on your Miss St. Croix Pageant experience, what you would say was your highlight? My highlights would definitely be my talent and my platform speech. What kind of obstacles did you have to overcome to compete in this pageant? My main obstacle was running for the title while attending University and holding two jobs while in Florida. What has the pageant experience taught you about yourself? The pageant experience taught me that there are people who like you and dislike you but none of that matters once you are the best version of yourself. People will be for you and against you but once you try your hardest and you keep your head up high then all of the negativity just kind of fades away.

What would a staycation look like for you? A staycation would include beachside relaxation and activities including kayaking, piddle boarding and jet ski riding.

What was your pageant platform and why?

What are your top five things to do in St. Croix?

My platform was “ It Takes a Village: a Mental Health Awareness Initiative.” My goal with this platform is to spread awareness and normalizing mental health and mental hygiene. I would like to make asking and receiving help for mental illness acceptable and expected.

Visiting Historical Sites Visiting Beaches Trying Local Foods Touring our local alcohol distilleries Trying freshly grown local fruits and vegetables

As Miss St. Croix, what do you wish for people to remember most about your reign?

}If the people of St. Croix remember anything from my reign, I hope it is the importance of mental health awareness and intervention. What is next for you as Miss St. Croix? As Miss St. Croix I am currently creating safe and COVID acceptable ways to reach out into the community and talk about mental health.

Tourism Ambassador: 26 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

I look forward to Village the most because there is a ton of food, the best music, and great rides and games to enjoy with family and friends.

What makes the island of St. Croix unique when compared to its sister islands? St. Croix is unique in our immense amount of ethnic and racial diversity. We, as an island, have a melting pot of cultures and languages ranging from Spanish to English to Tagalog. What makes St. Croix Festival unique? St. Croix festival is unique in its way of tying history and culture

Some of my goals include making tourists feel safe and welcomed. I have done this by promoting bilingual hiring and customer service. What are some challenges that you have faced as a Tourism Ambassador for St. Croix, how have you overcome them and, do you have any word(s) of motivation for the public in term of the supporting St. Croix Tourism? My biggest challenge has been the repercussions on COVID- 19. I have overcome this by using online forums to spread information about our beautiful island. As a community we should work on our customer service skills and keeping our island clean and beautiful. What is next for you in your Tourism Ambassadorial role? Next I plan to continue my Facebook campaign promoting what I consider to be the top tourist destination on St. Croix.

1. My first job ever was… My first job ever was working at Chuck E Cheese in Paramus, NJ. 2. I chose my career path because... I’d like to say my career path chose me. I went to College and majored in Law. That is far from what I am doing at the moment. Somehow I found myself in Hospitality and Event Planning. I feel honoured to have found myself in this field as it affords me the opportunity to meet so many different people and through event planning, I get to be apart of some really special life moments. 3. The part of my role that I love the most is… As an entrepreneur, the part of my role I enjoy the most is being of service. Of service to my employees, my partner and most importantly my clients. 4. The biggest challenge of my career… My biggest challenge is time. Sometimes I feel like I spread myself too thin and I don’t always give my personal life the priority it deserves. The great thing is that I have a very good support system that is very understanding of my schedule. I just try not to take that for granted and recognize that they too need my support and attention. 5. My boldest move to date was… My boldest move I have ever made to date was in 2015 I packed up all my belongings and moved from New York to Anguilla with no real pre-planning or research. I am forever grateful the move worked out in my favour. 6. My biggest setback was… 2020 is the biggest setback I have experienced personally and professionally. My Husband and I had so many plans for our business, etc. 7. I overcame it by…

8. My best advice for anyone interested in a career in…

My authentic self is prayerful, supportive, encouraging. I like to counsel and I like when I am asked to pray for or pray with. I think it is an honour when someone trusts you enough to ask you to intercede on their behalf to God. That’s when I catch a glimpse of who I truly am in Christ. 11. I came into my authentic self when I was… I came into my authentic self during many hard times when no one else but God could help me. You know that midnight hour when the world feels heaviest on your shoulders it’s just you and no one to call on. I became a prayer warrior – I prayed over my life and I watched the metamorphosis from hopeless to hopeful, from worthless to worthy, from tragic to triumphant. 12. I stay inspired by… I don’t harp on the past, but I stay inspired by never forgetting where God has brought me from. How he has carried me and continues to carry me. I am far from perfect, there are few edges he is polishing but I am not who I was yesterday and that’s what keeps me inspired. My journey inspires me.

My best advice for anyone interested in a career in hospitality is that you have to be service oriented, patient and willing to go above the call of duty. And this holds true whether you are frontline staff or working behind the scenes. There are many moving parts, no two days are the same, and you have to have a real passion for what you do because there will be days you feel like giving up. COVID is a true testament to that.

13. I am motivated by…

9. A great leader is…

14. What advice would you give your 16 year old self…

A great leader is someone who knows how to serve. It is not about flexing your muscle and dictating. You must be willing to get down in the trenches with those you lead. You must be a great listener. A great leader is also a prayer warrior.

My sixteen year old self didn’t like my parent’s rules so I rushed to become an adult and took on so many responsibilities way too soon. My advice to my 16 year old self would be “slow don’t little one. You’ll get there soon enough. No need to rush the process.”

I am motivated by love. Its sounds cliché I know but it’s true. I love genuinely and I am loved sincerely – I feel that every day in every way. I am also motivated by the men and women in my circle. They are an impressive bunch – they are strong, intelligent, progressive, hardworking.

My biggest setback was… For every Publicist operating in the Caribbean, I think our collective setback is simply helping people to understand how indispensable and necessary a well-rounded Public Relations strategy is to elevating one’s presence in digital and traditional markets. COVID-19 has unceremoniously ushered in an era of digital transformation – brands have become more vulnerable, particularly if they haven’t been employing the means and the tools to build with resilience in mind. 7. I overcame it by… I overcome this by taking a very hands-on approach to building bridges between where brands are to where they can be. When clients understand the potential reach and numerous opportunities by taking their Public Relations Portfolio seriously, they are more willing to invest in doing the work on all levels. 8. My best advice for anyone interested in a career in… The one advice I can impart right now is to have the audacity to show up. As a black female publicist, making your stamp in various spaces can be twice as difficult to receive half the reward. Stay the course and remain anchored in your brilliance. Your tribe will come. 9. A great leader is…

A great leader is someone who believes in knowledge transfer to help the team excel. If you’re the smartest person in the space without any real opportunity to learn something new, start searching for new rooms.

My first job ever was an Administrative Assistant internship for a regional insurance company. It taught me the value of confidence.

10. I describe my authentic self as being…

2. I chose my career path because...

Grateful. Gratitude, grace and gratefulness have taken me into places and spaces that intellect and experience could never.

My career paths chose me, and the beauty of it is in the plurality of my accomplishments. At the very foundation of everything that I am able to achieve professionally has been my ability to tell compelling stories. My experiences as a Travel, Culture and Entertainment Writer help me to explore the achievements and thoughts of others and connects communities. 4. The biggest challenge of my career… I am challenged every day by finding the space, the audacity, the range and the means to ensure that the story of my clients is told in an authentic, meaningful way.

Seeing other people win. There is a simple joy in seeing others grow past their circumstances. Removing ego removes doubt, and witnessing success for others keeps me grounded and helps me to understand that the mission I was sent here to do is much bigger than my own personal achievements. Community elevation is the truest revolution.

Perfect your art; the light will follow.

When I realized that my authentic self was evolutionary and not steeped in a singular moment, I started to look at things differently. Traveling to different countries is responsible for those realizations. I began to accept that every cultural experience, every challenge, every circumstance and every personal encounter was adding to the beautiful metric of my lived experiences.

Kamala Harris

The half-Jamaican, half-Indian woman who has become the latest buzz of the town is no other than Senator Kamala Harris. Surpassing countless expectations, the enthusiastic and compassionate Senator has risen to become one of the most important women in America today. Kamala Harris is the first woman to be elected attorney-general in California, the first black woman to be California’s district attorney, the first Indian-American senator, and now the first Asian-American to be selected in a vice-presidential race under a significant political party. A woman with so many firsts on her shelf of achievements excites us, and so we are more than intrigued to share everything we think you need to know about the trailblazing Kamala Harris.

Her parents, Donald Harris (Jamaican) and Shyamala Gopalan (Indian) were immigrants in the United States. Donald was an economics scholar, and Shyamala was studying endocrinology and nutrition. The two bonded instantly over a shared passion for justice. The couple birthed Kamala Devi Harris on October 20, 1964, in California. They often took young Harris along in a stroller for civil rights protests. She was soon followed by a sister, Maya, who is two years younger than she is. The couple divorced when Harris was 7. Her mother, Shyamala, raised the sisters in Berkeley. As a child, Harris often visited India. Her grandfather was a high ranking official in the government who joined in the fight for Indian independence. Her grandmother was an activist who believed in women’s rights. We can safely say that Harris grew up in a justice-loving family. In her first grade, Harris attended Thousand Oaks Elementary School, but her mom soon got a teaching job in Montreal, where she attended middle school. She furthered her education at Howard University, Washington, D.C., where she double-majored in political science and economics in 1986. After that, she studied law at the University

After law school, Harris began her career in the criminal justice system in Oakland, California. She joined the prosecutor’s office in Alameda County as an Assistant District Attorney. In 2003, Harris ran against Terrence Hallinan for the post of San Francisco District Attorney. She emerged victoriously and became the first black woman to be elected District Attorney in the city. like Jeff Sessions, Bill Barr and Brett Kavanaugh. Harris’s political life had begun since her early prosecutor days. From winning the two attorney positions, she had experienced a fair share of elections. And in those years, had gathered influential friends. In 2015, she was recruited to run for the U.S. Senate seat, which she accepted. She contested against Loretta Sanchez, a fellow Democrat, and won. She was known as the toughest interrogator in the senate because of her years as a prosecutor. In January 2019, she announced her intention to run for the presidency under the Democratic Party. She later dropped out due to some circumstances. Harris, however, continued to build her political profile, which led Joe Biden to choose her as his vice-presidential running mate.

As a married woman, Senator Harris is holding her own and is quite successful. Harris met her husband Douglas Emhoff on a blind date in 2013. They got married on August 22, 2014, in a private ceremony. Douglas has two kids from a previous relationship who both had no problem bonding with their stepmother. The kids coined an affectionate term for her ‘Momala,’ and she loves them dearly. Her husband, a United States lawyer, is also her biggest cheerleader. He loves her to bits and never fails to show it in his social media accounts. In our opinion, Kamala Harris is doing a great job at toggling all areas of her life.

Her Major Life Events

While she served as an Assistant District Attorney

in Alameda County, Harris tackled prostitution in the city and changed law enforcement’s approach to see the girls as victims instead of sex selling criminals. She also had a noteworthy increase in criminal conviction rate from 52-67% as the District Attorney in San Francisco. She was named one of California’s top 75 women litigators by The Daily Journal and was given the Thurgood Marshall award, just to mention a few. On August 11, 2020, Joseph Biden announced her as his vice-presidential running mate for the 2020 election.

What Does Senator Harris Do for Fun?

Outside of her professional life, Kamala Harris engages in several extracurricular activities. She enjoys cooking for herself and her family during her spare time. She also has an exceptional taste in music and enjoys listening too. She’s the author of 3 empowering books. No matter the outcome of the elections, Senator Harris remains a high profile woman of color who has made and is still making her mark in the United States. She’s a goal-getter, wife, and mother who is breaking societal and generational boundaries.

A Symbol Love & Hope:

Among a sea of protestors and loud "Black Lives Matter" chants, Dr. Kerry-Anne and Michael Gordon held hands while holding up the other in a fist in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter protesters in Philadelphia. The couple's wedding has gone viral as their last-minute ceremony became a symbol of love and hope. "We wanted a quiet simple first look moment... but God has other plans," the couple posted on their Instagram. "This was truly one of the best moments of our lives

that we will cherish forever. We are so lucky to have shared it with you all!" Dr. Kerry-Anne Perkins is an OB-GYN and captain in the Army Reserve Medical Corps. Michael Gordon is a Navy veteran. Just before their vows, they stood proud among the protestors. She in her white wedding gown, and he in his tuxedo. The spontaneous moment was captured by dozens of cameras who snapped photos of the couple among protestors and people holding BLM signs.

Here's their love story: The couple met doing what they love, working out at the gym. "The things that attracted me to her weren't what most people generally think of from this environment; there was an aura about her that I noticed from day one. The smile on her face always caught my attention, and she seemed to be such a pleasant person from afar," said Michael. He asked her out. She politely said, "no." She was in medical school and laser-focused on her goals. Months would go by before she would reply to his texts, but he persisted. Soon enough, they started dating and even had a long-distance romance. On January 26th, 2019, she said "yes" and accepted his proposal. She "made me the happiest man in the world," he shared the news on their wedding website.

Fashion

The couple was supposed to get married in New Jersey but postponed their May 26th, 2020 wedding due to the global pandemic. Although their large dream wedding celebration was put on hold, they didn't want to wait much longer to tie the knot. When you know, you now! "The couples that are meant to be, are the ones who go through everything that is meant to tear them apart and come out even stronger," they posted on social media on their wedding day.

The couple planned a small wedding with 21 guests, including close friends and family. The day before they exchanged vows, they got wind that a Black Lives Matter protest would be happening in front of the hotel. They told guests to arrive early. While she waited outside for Michael to arrive, she held her hand up in a fist while people shouted, "Congratulations," and cheered in honor of the beautiful bride. The crowd went wild when the groom arrived to meet his bride. Michael had a big smile on his face and kissed and embraced his partner in front of a cheering crowd. It was Love. And there was romance in the middle of the protest. This video of the couple posted by Rev. Birchfield has been seen more than 368,000 times on Instagram.

MS Artistry did her makeup, and updo was done by Hair at Ease and Tyra's Hair Experience. Michael donned a Michael Kors tuxedo and Kenneth Cole shoes.

Details The couple asked the original wedding vendors to help them celebrate their vows. "Each petal was perfect!" The couple posted on their Instagram about the floral arrangements by Robertson's Flowers. Her bouquet was a beautiful white arrangement that matched the flowers under every guest's chairs. The special ceremony was captured by Photographer Linda McQueen and Videographers Luxor Wedding Films and @Sacred Pact. Reverend Roxanne Birchfield, a celebrity wedding officiant who appeared on Netflix's "Love is Blind, Married at First Sight and Love & Hip-Hop." was the officiant for Gordon's wedding. According to their website, happilyevergordon.com, the couple plans to get married again in May 2021. To view wedding photos of the couple, visit their Instagram @meetthegordons.

After doing some research for open venues, Kerry Anne learned that The Logan Hotel, an upscale hotel on One Logan Square in Philadelphia, would be opening their garden for weddings for couples who had to postpone due to COVID-19 and front line workers. She was familiar with the venue since she held her bridal shower there. The hotel was available for two dates, and they chose June 6th to celebrate the special occasion.

The original gown she purchased hadn't arrived yet, so she had another fitting and bought a second option by an Australian designer. Kerry Anne looked stunning in an off the shoulder Sophia Tolli gown she purchased last-minute from Sew Pretty Bridal Studio. She wore a crystal hairpiece with a long veil, sparkly drop earrings by @BodyWerk Jewels, and Aminah Abdul Jillil heels. But what stood out the most was her radiant smile.

Best Places to

brunch

in St. Croix By: Anquanette Gaspard

POSHlifestyle

As a primary gateway to the Caribbean, St. Croix is known for its unique “pepper pot” of flavors influenced by the multitude of people that migrated to the 84-square mile island over the past century. This somewhat hidden Caribbean gem is certainly more of a grab-and-go kind of place, with limited seating in most restaurants frequented by locals and visitors. There’s definitely no shortage of places to eat and the options range from local, homecooked meals to fine dining restaurants with Caribbean flair. One thing that can be hard to pin down is that special spot where breakfast meets lunch and bottomless mimosas flow for hours on end.

Brunch – the unofficial meal on weekends – is somewhat of a rarity on St. Croix. This list, albeit small, will include the must-visit eateries on island where you can “brunch like a boss.” 1. 40 Eats & Drinks - Formerly 40 Strand Eatery, this revamped restaurant reopened in July 2020 with a brand-new menu, style and atmosphere. The former fine dining restaurant has been transformed into a more casual bistro with a walkup counter, an outdoor seating space and lunch counter style seating perfect for people watching. Seasonal menu offerings are the name of the game at 40 Eats & Drinks. In the winter months, try their Gingerbread French Toast with Lemon Whipped Cream or stick with a classic Egg Benedict served with a side of fresh fruit. If you’re feeling a little adventurous, try their Duck Breast BLT. Made with maple bacon, arugula, tomato, orange-scallion mayo, this sandwich is topped off with a cider cranberry compote and served on toasted challah bread with a side of sweet potato fries. Quench your thirst with a traditional mimosa or whet your palate with one of their signature cocktails. Save room for dessert because their rum cakes are to die for! Their brunch menu is available on weekends from 10am to 2pm. Reservations are recommended due to limited seating.

2. Ciboné – Located in the heart of Downtown Frederiksted, this locally owned restaurant is one of the few fine dining locations in the area featuring local farm-fresh ingredients and wild-caught seafood. While their lunch & dinner menus are drool worthy, their brunch menu is where they really shine. Indulge in a traditional Crucian Breakfast which includes saltfish, johnny cake, spinach chop-up and a boiled egg. Treat yourself to their Deep-Fried French Toast or Chicken & Waffles to satisfy your sweet tooth. Finish it off with their bottomless mimosas featuring

1

2

fresh, local juices such as watermelon, passion fruit, mango and sea grape. Brunch is available every Sunday from 11am to 3pm.

3. Ziggy’s Island Market – You don’t expect to find the best food in a gas station, but Ziggy’s Island Market will deliver shock and awe with their epic Sunday Grateful Brunch. Located on St. Croix’s East End, this gas station, convenience store and tavern in one serves up a delicious menu that is guaranteed to please any palate. Menu offerings vary from one week to the next and is based largely on seasonality. This week might feature Local Conch Cake Benedict and Mango Cream Cheese Stuffed French Toast with Bacon & Cruzan Rum Maple Syrup. Next week, you’ll find a New Orleans inspired menu with Jambalaya Scramble made with smoked sausage, shrimp, okra, peppers, onions, cheddar jack cheese and cornbread crumbles with a Belgium Waffle Stacker featuring sausage, ham, fried eggs, hash browns and bacon. Bartender Ned is known to make a mean Bloody Mary and a full bar to make you almost anything your heart desires offer standard drinks like mimosas, beers

4. Esterlyn’s Breakfast – While Esterlyn’s Breakfast is not the fanciest place to grab brunch on St. Croix, this secret spot in downtown Frederiksted serves traditional breakfast at affordable prices. Think omelets, pancakes, waffles and the like. The best way to enjoy Esterlyn’s is not at the restaurant itself but in the surrounding area. First, grab a bottle of chilled champagne and a few bottles of local juices from the supermarket. Next, walk a few steps from the restaurant to the Frederiksted waterfront with your meal for the most rewarding brunch experience on island. It takes minimal effort and it’s worth it thanks to the simply breathtaking ocean view and the serenity of the sleepy Frederiksted town. Open for breakfast daily from 8am.

1. How did you get your start in business? I started HireBVI in 2015 as an online job board. For me it was a dollar and a dream. It did not cost much to construct the website. From a young age, I knew that I wanted to be an entrepreneur so when the opportunity presented itself, I embraced it wholeheartedly. Five years, later and we are now more than an online job board. We are a business offering human resources solutions. 2. What would you say is your deepest motivator? I would say having a sense of purpose is my deepest motivator. I want to know that whatever I do has a sense of significance and positive impact on others. 3. What do you love the most about your work? What I love the most is the ability to help others and make an impactful difference in their livelihoods. 4. What drove you to make your ‘big idea’ a reality? Knowing that my ‘big idea’ would have a sense of importance to others in the BVI and even worldwide was all it took for me to make my ‘big idea’ a reality. The BVI needed an employment hub – I identified that need and decided to make it a reality for my BVI.

54 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

5. What would you say is your best-selling feature/ service/product? Definitely, the HireBVI online job board! It is quite popular locally and within the Caribbean region. Many have found employment and employees through the online job board. 6. How has the pandemic impact your business? Initially, the lockdown/curfew phases affected our business operations. However, we were able to shift

our sails to move with the motion. We are not where we want to be, but who haven’t the pandemic affected? We have realigned some of our goals and objectives to operate within the pandemic. Every day we work towards achieving “awesomeness”. 7. What unexpected change did you have to make because of the pandemic? I wouldn’t term any of our changes as unexpected. We were already in the process of moving some of our business operations remotely, prior to the pandemic. However, we had to learn how to work remotely, quicker while still efficiently offering superior customer service to our clients. It is important to note that change is inevitable and it usually brings opportunity. I truly believe that it is impossible to make progress without change. 8. What advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur? My advice for an aspiring entrepreneur is quite simple - “Don’t chase paper, chase passion”. In whatever business you aspire to bring to life, ensure it is your passion. Chase your passion and eventually you will achieve greatness.

1. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN BUSINESS? At first, I tried to build my business on the side, but I could not put in the time necessary to build it properly. So I took the leap of faith and started my business on March 1, 2012 with zero dollars.

3. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? The counselling aspect of my work. I am a financial planner who not only looks at your money, but I also look into your family history and show you how that would have influenced your mind set and behaviour towards money. I see the ease in my clients’ faces after they have had their one on one with me. 4. WHAT DROVE YOU TO MAKE YOUR ‘BIG IDEA’ A REALITY? My first career choice was not financial

My second job was with an offshore bank and I saw first-hand how the financial crisis would have affected many, because some financial decisions were made without the necessary information. I found my niche there. I felt very strongly that I could educate many about personal and business finance. 5. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR BESTSELLING FEATURE/SERVICE/PRODUCT? My best selling service would be conducting Financial Wellness workshops for corporate clients. I find businesses are recognising that their teams need to be well rounded. As part of their training programmes, they have included Money Management, which I think is forward thinking on the leadership of any business. 6. HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS? I will be transparent and say that my business’ cash flow has been certainly impacted. However, in the process I am learning some very valuable lessons, like ensuring there is

always a reserve for my business anytime a pandemic like this comes around again. In addition, to develop other income streams (businesses) moving forward. 7. WHAT UNEXPECTED CHANGE DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC? I have had to evolve and make some necessary changes to my business model. Taking my work online for example has been the necessary shift I have had to take. Having my meetings online and receiving my payments online has been my way of conducting business of recent. Also, I have taken the plunge in beginning another business I have as well. 8. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR? Someone is looking for the solution you have to offer. It is just they do not know you yet and do not how what you have to offer. Do not allow the naysayers to stop you from making your vision a reality. You will definitely need a business plan to move you forward. It is one thing to be in business. However, having a detailed plan is what is going to help sail through the stormy and calm seas.

1. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START IN BUSINESS? After studying and working in Toronto for ten years, my husband and I decided to return home. Initially, I struggled to find positions within the design industry and soon realised that I would need to work for myself. I was given some invaludable advice from a local events decorator who suggested that we start offering Christmas Decorating services to get ourselves through “the front door”. Needless to say this worked better than we ever anticipated and the rest, as they say, is history. 2. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR DEEPEST MOTIVATOR? My deepest motivator, I would say, is my constant pursuit of excellence, never comprimising on quality, and my strong desire to be different and unique.

4. WHAT DROVE YOU TO MAKE YOUR ‘BIG IDEA’ A REALITY? I have always loved Design, even before I knew what it was. After finishing school, I worked for many Design-related companies and actual Design Firms. I was also taking on my own clients as well. However, what drove me to make my “big idea” a reality was actually circumstance. When I returned to Trinidad, I found it hard to convince myself to work for someone else yet again. I decided to open Toni Crockett Design and give it a go! 5. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR BEST-SELLING FEATURE/ SERVICE/PRODUCT? 3. WHAT DO YOU LOVE THE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? 58 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

The look on our clients’ faces when the Project is completed! We have a company slogan, “we make dream homes, real homes.” That saying really says it all. Building or renovating a home is one of the largest investsments a homewoner makes, so we recognise the trust and responbulity that comes with our job, we truly love that our job and creativity is something that impacts our clients daily lives even after we hand the keys back over.

Our full service design service is our most requested service. It offers the highest value, conveneince and stress-free option for our clients. That being said, E-Design has become a big favourite recently. I think the pandemic has a bit to do with it. E-Design offers clients an easy, more affordable Design package, without having face to face interractions. E-Design has also made TCD more accessible to regional and international clients.

8. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR? This may sound cliché but if you have a dream, pursue it! Everyone has to work to make a living but doing something you love not only means that you enjoy it but you also work at it much harder than you would at anything else. Every decision you make is fueled by passion and that is an irreplacebale energy. Don’t get me wrong, things are not always easy and you stumble often but you have to look at these stumbles as opportunities to learn and you have to use them as ways to streamline your business. As an entrepreneur, I am constantly changing things. Making improvements everywhere. Sometimes these changes don’t work, sometimes they open doors to other ways to make our business better.

6. HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC IMPACT YOUR BUSINESS? The pandemic has affected us drastically. While most industries have gone through hardships, our industry has exploded! Our demand is higher than it has ever been! COVID-19 has also forced us to make major changes and innovations. We have had to grow our team to tackle the new demand, we have placed more emphasis on E-Design and become more accessible to clients who would have been difficult or impossible to reach. We had to streamline our processes to facilitate working remotely and from home. This has drastically increased our efficiency. It was actually our regional work that got us noticed and nominated for an International Property Award. As a result, we are now “5 Star” winners of the “International Property Awards - Best Residential Interior Private Residence Saint Kitts and Nevis 2020 - 2021”. We were also most recently awarded by Lux Life Magazine for “Best Interior Design Company-The Caribbean”. 7. WHAT UNEXPECTED CHANGE DID YOU HAVE TO MAKE BECAUSE OF THE PANDEMIC? As mentioned before, we have had to make many changes but the most unexpected change would definitely be having our staff work remotely. What really surprised me is how well we have adapted to this change and how much more efficient we have become. We have had to simplify everything and focus on proper communication between us and the client. We have created “systems” for each process. This simply means that when most situations arise, we already have step-by-step procedures in place to follow. This idea was actually something suggested by my accountant and has resulted in increasing efficiency tremendoulsy!

Finally, I will give you the same advice our Accountant gave us (shout out MDG ltd.)… Create systems for all of your processes. As soon as you figure out the best way to complete a task, write down the steps you took. Save it somewhere or even print it. By doing this, not only are you more efficient but you also help all of your staff maintain the same level of efficiency and quality that you now expect from yourself.

I have always dreamed and even tried in the past to uphold my own business, but life always threw obstacles at me, which forced me to step out of my dreams and do what was needed versus what I wanted. I desired to live my life my way and knew that starting this business... (where work is a tremendous part of Life) would, in time... afford me this divine right of empowerment. I positioned myself in a space to learn, dedicated a few years of my time, energy, and care there... then I transitioned from that space to a space where I began to get the experience and continue my path to knowledge. Focus, determination, resilience, passion, love, purpose, empathy, creativity, authenticity, and kindness are just a few of the vital characteristics an entrepreneur needs for success. Nothing good comes easy but ease comes eventually, when you have manifested and continuously uphold and nurture all your divinely appointed spiritual fruits. Ignore the noise and listen to the guidance of your ancestors through meditation practices and your own voice... first and foremost. Ignore fear and embrace LOVE. Nonetheless, when our federation went into lock down, being that I Set Up Shop as a street vendor... That was automatically a door closing to my business functioning... or so it would have seemed. I tuned into love as always and not fear and decided to make a new way for my customers to be able to continue their self-care, during days and times we could move around for necessities. I opened my sacred home space for shopping, it was a sacrifice, being I am a very private person when it comes to my home space and home life. But I did it because I cared about my customers and my family and my brand. The awareness and demand grew... as now people were home and more connected to social media, therefore my marketing was able to reach many more due to its lockdown phase. It allowed me to attract more prosperity and help more of my people in their natural self-care rituals. I AM grateful for being able to transform negative times into positive times. SEVANA UNVEILS

“BLESSED"

VIDEO FROM HER LATEST EP BE SOMEBODY Fall of 2020, Sevana releases her latest video for “Blessed.” The Jamaican singer gives reverence to a higher power on this Yoram Savion directed visual shot in the rustic terrain of Soda Springs, CA. Sevana towers over the bright horns as her voice overflows. This soul-baring anthem is off her acclaimed EP Be Somebody (out July 31 via In.Digg.Nation Collective / Six Course / RCA Records) and produced by IzyBeats, the hitmaker behind Koffee’s “Toast” and Lila Iké’s “I Spy.” “The visual follows the story of a woman lost in the wilderness. She’s made a home there, but it all comes to a head when a threat finds its way into the home she’s made. Through divine intervention, she escapes. The threat is fear. The woman is me, “ Sevana explains. “The visual follows the story of a woman lost in the wilderness. The "Blessed" visual follows her "Mango" video which has over 2m+ views and is a favorite among the likes of actress Halle Berry and dancehall queen Spice. The latter song is also featured on her 6-track EP Be Somebody.

R&B Artist

The young and talented R&B artist H.E.R. has become a sensational presence in the music industry within a short time with millions of fans who simply adore her. The Grammy award winner has numerous collaborations with top tier artists and still does not seem to be relenting on her musical journey. In this feature, we would be looking at recent updates about the singer and her growing love for Reggae music.

66 CARIBBEANPOSH.COM

H.E.R. - The R&B Sensation Born in Vallejo, San Francisco, the 23-year-old artist grew up in a mixed background. H.E.R., who is half Filipino, half black, identifies strongly with both sides. Her music life starts way back since her childhood years, which explains H.E.R. 's natural talent. Her father, who is a musician, introduced his daughter to the late artist, Prince. She says Prince and Lauryn Hill are her favorite artists, and it shows as they have enormously contributed to her musical signature.

H.E.R. reggae and Her Love Affair with

At age 12, the artist was one of 5 finalists in an American radio show contest hosted by Radio Disney. However, she got her official music break when RCA Records signed her in 2014. Her stage name is short for “Having Everything Revealed,” which is ironic because she fancies anonymity. For the first couple of years after she came on the music scene, H.E.R. kept her identity hidden. Like Sia, she hid her face from pictures and in person. Gradually, she inculcated interviews into her lifestyle and allowed pictures of her face. The artist still holds on to her love for sunglasses, as most of her social media photos portray that. She plays five musical instruments, the piano, drum, the electronic, acoustic, and bass guitar. Her Love Affair with Reggae H.E.R. is generically an R&B artist. Although, like every other artist, she occasionally delves in other music genres. After getting signed to RCA Records, she released the single Something to Prove under her real name, Gabriella Wilson. She resurfaced in 2016 with an E.P., H.E.R. Vol. 1. The 7 track E.P. was assisted by prominent artists like Alicia Keys, Drake, and Bryson Tiller. It eventually found its way to number 28 on Billboard’s R&B/ hip-hop chart. Soon enough, the artist released a follow up in 2017, H.E.R. Vol. 2. This debuted at number 22 on Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart. The two E.P.s were incorporated and enhanced with 6 extra tracks to release an album, H.E.R. In 2018, H.E.R. and Khalid worked together to create a soundtrack for Superfly. That same year, a third E.P. was released, I Used to Know Her, which skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard R&B chart. At the end of 2018, H.E.R. was nominated for 5 Grammy Awards. In 2019, she won Best R&B Performance and Best R&B album. She was also a nominee for 5 awards in the Grammy Awards ceremony in 2020, including Album of the year. Even though the artist has been thriving in the R&B genre, there has been a pull towards another funky music genre — Reggae. In February, Skip Marley, the soulful grandson of Bob Marley, and

H.E.R. released a hit single. Slow Down topped Billboard’s R&B chart and has amassed 44 million streams around the world. The song is a romantic reggae melody, and there seems to be some chemistry between these two icons. H.E.R. is currently in Jamaica, and although nothing has been said about new music, there have been rumors of a collaboration with Buju Banton. She took to her Instagram page, posting a picture with the caption of a Jamaican flag. Another picture was posted with the caption, “I’m not here for vacation.” We can therefore assume we might be getting a collaboration between the two Reggae stars.

Fresh Sounds from H.E.R. H.E.R. has released several projects this year. Starting with her most recent, a Reggae-inspired hit single Do to Me. The song is about love, and a few fans have the impression it was made for Skip Marley due to the collaboration they had earlier this year. She also released I Can’t Breathe, a powerful song written to respond to the killings of black people. The reggae artist has also collaborated with Nigerian star boy Wizkid, on the song Smile. Despite her love for anonymity, H.E.R. has allowed her music to speak for her. She wanted to be recognized by her sounds, and we think that she has accomplished this. We are thrilled at her budding love for reggae and can only hope that it blossoms into more beautiful music soon.
