Horsefly local named as Community Medal Bearer The Rick Hansen End of Day Celebration Committee is pleased to announce that Horsefly resident Bruce MacLeod has been chosen as the Final Community Medal Bearer.

“This was a complete surprise to me, but I am both honored and humbled to be even be considered,” said MacLeod.

Mr. MacLeod will carry the medal to the stage during the End of Day Celebration when the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay

“Bruce MacLeod is a dedicated volunteer in his community of Horsefly and is an excellent representative of our community,” says Councillor Surinderpal Rathor, who is the City’s Accessibility Committee’s representative on the End of Day Committee.

MacLeod said none of his achievements in life before or after his accident on Dec. 16, 1981 would have been possible with his network of support from different sources.

MacLeod was nominated by Joan Sorley and Linda Bartsch for all of the work MacLeod has done in Horsefly making it accessible to all people.

One of the things MacLeod is most looking forward to as the final community medal bearer is meeting Rick Hansen.

“I look forward to meeting Rick, who is after all the real reason for the relay, and whose accomplishments are responsible for this 25th year celebration,” said MacLeod.

For the past 14 months, police have been handing out 90-day driving bans, a $500 fine and impounding the vehicle for 30 days for drivers who have blown 0.08 per cent or higher.

Traffic Services, this holiday season police will be deterring drivers from drinking by being out and with roadblocks.

“We will be covering off all weekends between now and New Year’s,” said Sgt. Verbrtt. “(The Immediate Roadside Process) was another tool for us to use, and now we are back to what we have always done.”

Sgt. Verbrtt said the I.R.P is what the Judge ruled against, but the RCMP still has the criminal code process, which means they can still issue out 24 hour roadside probations.

“If someone blows over 0.08 during a road check, we return them to police station for a breathalyzer,” said Verbrtt.

Sgt. Verbrtt said the detachment will be using overtime hours to have RCMP officers out often over the holiday season conducting roadblocks in the city as well as in rural areas.

Cache of weapons discovered Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The Alexis Creek RCMP weren’t taking any chances when they executed a search warrant last week in the name of public safety, after receiving information regarding a disturbing quantity of military style assault rifles, ammunition and body armour.

According to Alexis Creek RCMP Sgt. Jim Anderson, the rural detachment received

more than a dozen extra officers as back-up from all areas and levels of the RCMP including members from Anaham Lake, Williams Lake, Quesnel, the RCMP North District Emergency Response Team, RCMP Firearms Enforcement, Integrated National Security Enforcement, B.C.’s RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit and the Regional General Investigation Section before entering a remote, 500-acre

property in the bush north west of Alexis Creek.

“There was a risk of danger (to officers) just by even not knowing what else was there,” Anderson said involving the specialized units.

Anderson said by the end of the two-day search, RCMP seized more than 45 rifles and two handguns as well as several sets of military body armour and thousands of rounds of ammunition all dis-

covered at one location under a tarp.

No arrests have been made in relation to the seizure so far, although the weapons are in the custody of the RCMP. Anderson is remaining tight-lipped about who owns the property due to the ongoing police investigation.

It was noted however in an RCMP news release that police do not believe the guns are tied to gang activity or militant groups.

Tsilhqot’in people welcome discussion on Prosperity opposition Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor It was standing room only at the Arts Centre last week as leaders of the Tsilhqot’in Nation held out an olive branch to non-native residents and politicians in Williams Lake.

At the heart of the meeting, hosted by the Williams Lake

Chapter of the Council of Canadians, was the Tsilhqot’in’s wanting to explain the reasoning behind their continued opposition to Taseko’s ongoing attempts to build a $1 billion dollar gold and copper mine near Fish Lake.

Though the meeting easily had the potential to become heated, (RCMP members of First Nations policing were on hand just in case), well known leaders such as Chief Joe Alphonse calmly and with easy humour kept the crowd in check when giving background information on the mine project leading up to present day.

“I don’t want this to be First Nations versus non-First Nations.

That’s not the issue.

At the beginning of the meeting, which took place Thursday evening, Cecil Grinder spoke in Tsilhqot’in and English to welcome everyone and explain the tradition of drumming.

Tsilhqot’in elders were also front stage as they were blessed with water they considered “Holy” which was taken from the headwaters of the Taseko River, a water source they say will be ruined if the mine goes through.

One elder explained her drum was made from deer and forest materials.

“What a relief last November was. We were very honoured when the decision came down (to deny the mine),” Alphonse said.

“We are only 3,500 members but the Canadian government agreed with us ...that was a very touching moment.”

Alphonse said it is going to be very tax-

ing for everyone to go through the process all over again next year, due to the government’s decision to allow Taseko to resubmit a new proposal for a new review, however they believe it necessary due to what they say is a very real threat to the environment with the new proposal.

Alphonse and the TNG’s mining manager JP LaPlante said the new proposal, of which the technical points were discussed during the meeting, destroys 81 per cent of Teztan Biny’s (Fish Lake) spawning area and would see 500 million tonnes of acid waste stored above ground in prime grizzly bear habitat.

Some vocal supporters of the mine were on hand for the meeting however they kept a low profile throughout the presentation.

Representatives from Taseko Mines were not at the meeting to defend their position.

Alphonse did acknowledge and thank staunch mine supporter Walt Cobb for his attendance, saying he wanted there to be open and honest dialogue around the issue.

“We want to become a part of the larger society in a meaningful way,” Alphonse said, proudly pointing out recent election results which has seen First Nations Roger William become a CRD director and Joyce Cooper a SD 27 trustee.

“We want this area to thrive. We want jobs.

We want opportunities too. But any development we do we want to protect our water. Do we have to be so narrow-minded (regarding New Prosperity)?”

Full plate for Area D Director Deb Bischoff Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Deb Bischoff has big plans for Area D in the New Year, and she knows it’s a lot of work but says she’s ready for the challenge.

“In 2012, I am going to be completely focused on Area D,” said Bischoff.

Bischoff was acclaimed as the Cariboo Regional District Area D Director going into the new term, and she said it felt odd that no one ran against her.

“It felt funny being acclaimed, I had encour-

me the impression that they want me to continue working for them – and that’s exactly what I intend to do.”

Top on Bischoff ’s priority is establishing an Interface Fire Protection Plan for McLeese Lake, Tyee Lake, and Deep Creek, as well as establish an emergency evacuation plan for the whole area and establishing a Fire Protection Plan with the City.

“Establishing an emergency plan was one of my main reason’s for running in the first place,” said Bischoff.

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor After being stationed all over the RCMP’s North District, Staff Sgt. Ken Brissard has made his family home in Williams Lake and has no plans to change their location.

“We find that the people here are very supportive… they are good folks,” said Brissard. “As soon as we moved here in 2001, my wife made the comment about

how friendly the people are here.”

Brissard has held many posts and positions during his 22 years in the RCMP; he has been stationed at one point or another at 40 of 42 detachments in the North District, which covers 73 per cent of the province.

Brissard moved his family to Williams Lake in 2001, but since then has been posted to Prince George, he transferred back to Williams Lake in May 2010, and in June, 2011 the detachment was re-classified. This re-classification meant that his current position of Operations NCO was raised up one rank to Staff Sergeant and he applied for the position.

“When the detachment and my position as operations NCO was re-classified to Staff Sergeant, there was no question whether I would apply for the position,” he said.

“Williams Lake is home for not only my wife and I, but for my children.”

Brissard said he’s ready to dive into tackling some of the challenges the detachment faces as well as keep the detachment on a forward moving path.

“We definitely want to ensure the gains we’ve made do not perish. We have been reducing the crime rate since 2008, and we want to make sure we don’t back up.”

Another challenge Brissard mentioned was retaining members as well as recruiting members to Williams Lake.

“That is the edge that the RCMP has over other police services – We take Canadians from every corner of this country and that’s what makes up our detachment.”

Brissard says he is proud to be member of the RCMP, and said he plans to enjoy the town and area of Williams Lake for years to come.

Area D covers a lot of different communities some close to town such as Commodore Crescent and Fox Mountain, and others that are more remote such as Tyee Lake and Macalister and Bischoff said much of her area doesn’t have high speed internet and that makes emergency planning

and evacuations a challenge.

Moving forward into 2013 and 2014, Bischoff wants to direct her focus into researching the different programs and functions that the residents of Area D pay into and revisit them to see of they are still relevant and serving their purpose.

Bischoff said she is ready to move into the new term, work along side her new colleagues and finish off a lot of projects in her area.

“My plate is going to be very full,” said Bischoff.

Great people come from the Cariboo-Chilcotin Sometimes living in such a small city can make people feel as if they can’t dream big and may have to limit themselves. That couldn’t be further from the truth since Williams Lake is home to many great people who have gone on to do wonderful things on an international level.

Take for example people like Rick Hanson, Anna Dell, Don Alder, Kane Fraser and Kayla Moleschi – they are all out in the world doing great things and representing Williams Lake to the best of their ability.

They are showing the rest of the world that

we are not just some little hick town, and that great people are raised here.

It may take a little extra push of finding the right paths to greatness and a lot of hard work and dedication, but these few people mentioned have shown that it is not impossible.

In this world all we need is a little hope, and watching Anna Dell or Rick Hansen speak and seeing all they have done to help others in this world can give hope to those who need it.

If you are a rising star in the athletic department, you can

look up to Carey Price who started his hockey career right here in the puddle and who now is of course the starting goalie for the Montreal Canadians.

Another great athlete who has gone to bigger and better things is Kayla Moleschi won just recently got back from playing rugby with Team Canada in Dubai and who will go on to play in the Olympics in 2016.

She started out on the rugby fields right here in town and has moved onto the international scene at only 21 years old.

How about all our Williams Lake stu-

dents who have gone on to become, or are currently working on becoming doctors, lawyers, dentists, pilots and more? I bet you might even see some of these special people home for the holidays soon.

The list of great people who are from Williams Lake doing great things grows continuously and they continue to do Williams Lake a great deed by representing us to the best of their ability and showing the world just how fantastic the people here are.

Be proud of where you come from, as we are proud of you.

A twist on the Twelve Days of Christmas Everyone knows the song ‘12 days of Christmas’ where someone was giving gifts to their true love things such as golden rings, milkmaids, and a partridge in a pear tree.

With Christmas just a mere 11 days away why not get into the spirit of Christmas by doing 12 great things each day leading up to Christmas (12 just sounds better

than 11)?

No, were not going to ask you to milk cows, or dance, or find a goose or any other bird for that matter - we are talking about doing 12 great things in your community, for your family or just for yourselves.

Some ideas could be to give someone a hug, hold a door for a stranger at the supermarket, baby sit for your sister

and bake some cookies to take to work. It doesn’t have to something big, but it’s the good feeling it gives the other person and yourself.

Christmas is the time of giving, so to get into the spirit. Use these next 11 days to give some Christmas cheer.

Other ideas for great things you could do are things such as visiting a

senior or making time to see your own grandparents, thank a volunteer, spend an hour with your child doing what they want to do instead of the other way around, heck just say Merry Christmas to a total stranger. Try to make people smile around you – a smile is contagious and the feel good feeling you get is just a bonus.

Dogs are smart, loyal and of course man’s best friend Border Collies are at the top of the list in dog smarts. Case in point is Chaser, a Border Collie who lives in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She has the largest vocabulary of any known dog - 1,022 nouns. These dogs are also superbly working animals when it comes to cattle roundup and are very useful up here in the Cariboo.

My good neighbours at the local ranch down the road had a Border Collie named Ruby to give to a willing caregiver. They put her up on Craig’s List and received over 900 requests. Finally settling on a farm in Barriere where they knew the dog could have space to

run. Anyone who has ever owned a Border Collie knows they are very active and a home in an apartment in the city would simply never do. The dog would end up a neurotic mess.

So when it came time to bring a new dog into my life as a loving companion I picked a Shetland

Sheepdog, often known as the Sheltie, derived from dogs used in the Shetland Isles for herding and protecting sheep. Right up there in terms of intelligence, they are vocal, excitable, energetic dogs who are always willing to please and work hard. Skipper as I call him, knows no fear and has fallen into my life in a way that has left me to ponder the nature of dogs and men.

Every morning early on I feed the birds, the dogs and me. The dogs without fail, wake me up at 7:20 AM (give or take a few minutes), by jumping up on my bed and trampling all over me. “Get up! Get up! It’s time to get up!”

is their silent mantra.

They have grins on their faces. What fun.

After I am dressed, they make sure they have my attention, especially if I am even a tad late with their doggy breakfast.

Creatures of habit? You bet.

When I had cats, I noticed that they followed a path that they had created and never strayed from. In their treks over the lawn they made a well worn rut.

Same with the dogs I now have and always the shortest distance between two points.

Like wild game trails in the bush which do not meander except around some obstacle. Keep to the mean is their motto whether here, there, or

wherever.

When I walk the dogs, they also keep to a familiar pattern, straying occasionally to places of exploration yes, but always returning to their regular route. It seldom varies. So what does this say to me? All animals love the familiar and consistent. Taking them out of their customary routine does at times, excite them with new experiences. Unlike most humans I suspect, as generally, we prefer to remain within our comfort zones, the boundaries of our understandings and life expectations, living the habitual and familiar. Artists, poets, writers and visionaries are exceptions and

have through the ages, often suffered for it.

Because it is most difficult to embrace the new in terms of having to change our mindset, progress is usually dictated by invention and the fresh thought forms presented through various media. Or in the old days, mouth to mouth. While occasionally, we have to face change by unpredictable and sometimes shocking circumstances forced upon us. Events propel us forward, but given our propensity to try and stay the course and allow our reality construct to dictate, we carry with us our own portable rut.

Animals adapt more readily than humans

I think. My dogs, grounded in affection, are totally reliable and loyal. We humans on the other hand, are too often unpredictable, with loyalties wavering, moods shifting and life changing.

Skipper is the first dog I have had since I was boy and he has brought much joy into my life. My relationship with him is more than blessed. While I realize that this revelation is not news to most dog owners, I’ve come to the conclusion that true love can flow between a person and their dog, and Skipper’s love for me knows no bounds. How many human’s are capable of that?

Decision will be long remembered Dear Editor, A truckload of roses to the Cariboo Regional District for making the intelligent decision to finance the renovations needed at the Deni House (adjacent to the hospital). It can now be used for the purposes that it was originally built for.

Its untimely closing seven years ago needlessly affected the lives of dozens of patients, seniors and their families in the Cariboo/Chilcotin.

Your decision will be long remembered by the citizens of this area, for into the distant future.

Kudos to all of the folk in this community The TNG held a community meeting last Thursday to discuss the application of Taseko for the New Prosperity mine proposal. It appears to me that Chief Joe Alphonse and the Tsilhgot’in are still fighting the Chilcotin War while at the same time trying to stop mining at Fish Lake. Chief Joe told the meeting regarding the mine that it would be good if we could find the truth. Former Chief Ervin Charleyboy suggested in a recent interview with a local on-line paper that Joe Alphonse refused repeatedly to consult with Taseko or the BC Government.

Charleyboy stated he did not know why the TNG would refuse to talk, they only send out press releases. Also in my opinion, if Mr. Alphonse does not like something, the first thing he says is ‘I’ll take you to court’. I wonder when he will get his legal folk to go after Mr. Charleyboy. Must

Nothing makes me want to get sick to my stomach more than needless stupid violence against seniors and other people who cannot defend themselves.

Last week two young adults beat an old man with spinal disease who was in a wheelchair and they robbed him outside of his Senior Care home in Nanaimo. It doesn’t matter what race of people it is who does this kind of stuff it

is totally ignorant. Two males demanded he give them his money.

When he refused, he was pushed out of his chair, kicked, punched and hit repeatedly with a blunt object according to police.

Nice folks huh. They have about as much spine as a jellyfish.

Maybe if the parents had spent some valuable time with these jerks when they were growing up, they would not have turned out to be slime buckets.

It is too close to Christmas to really get grossed out about these idiots but it did put a dint in my happy thoughts for the day.

Kudos to all of the folk in this community who spend time volunteering to help others.

This is truly a fine gift year round, but somehow at this time of the year, it seems a little more special. There are people in Williams Lake and area who do require a helping hand

and some kind words this season. Businesses in the community do much to help others at Christmas. I know that at this time Lake City Ford is gathering goodies, and the Churches got together items for those needing

toys, food and clothes and there are probably many more fundraisers around town.

Thanks to everyone in town who helped make the Christmas light shine a little brighter for those in need.

CITY OF WILLIAMS LAKE WINTER GARBAGE CART With winter here, the City of Williams Lake is reminding its residents of the importance of getting your garbage and recycling carts to the curb at 7:00 am on your collection day. Here are some friendly reminders to ensure your garbage collection service continues to be as smooth as possible.

• Winter snow and colder weather causes schedules to be delayed or need to be adjusted. These adjustments may cause your usual collection time to change from day to day. The only way to ensure your solid waste is collected on your day is to have your cart at the curb at 7:00am.

• Putting your cart on the curb the night before only increases the risk of vandalism during the night and interferes with snow removal equipment.

• Put your carts as close to the pavement as possible. If the cart is on top of a snow bank or other obstruction it cannot be picked up.

• Remove your cart from the curb the same day it was collected to ensure your empty carts do not interfere with snow removal equipment.

A REMINDER ABOUT GARBAGE AND RECYCLING CARTS The only items that are permitted go into the curb side recycling cart are: 1. Paper products – ofce paper, magazines, newspapers.

2. Cardboard – corrugated cardboard and regular cardboard such as a cereal box.

3. Plastics – must have the recycling symbol on it and the number inside the symbol must be 1 through 7. No Styrofoam allowed.

4. Metal food cans – food or beverage containers.

Note: all above mentioned products must be clean.

The most common question asked by residents is: Can GLASS be put in the curb side recycling cart?

The short answer is NO GLASS ALLOWED. PLEASE DO NOT put glass in the recycling cart. Glass in the recycling cart could end up broken. Broken glass spoils the recyclables and puts the workers who do the sorting at a great risk of injury. Instead of putting glass in the curb side recycling cart, it can be taken to the Central Cariboo Transfer Station or Canadian Tire.

Starting this fall the City of Williams Lake’s garbage contractor will be putting a yellow sticker on your recycling cart if they nd glass in the cart as a reminder for you that glass is not allowed.

PULL OVER FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES The Williams Lake Fire Department is reminding residents to pull over when an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and siren on.

The British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act, Section 177, states: “On the immediate approach of an emergency vehicle giving an audible signal by bell, siren or exhaust whistle, and showing a visible ashing red light, except when otherwise directed by a peace ofcer, a driver must yield the right of way, and immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the nearest edge or curb of the roadway, clear of an intersection, and stop and remain in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.”

Here’s how to help: • Signal, pull over to the nearest edge of the road on the approach of an emergency vehicle and stop • If at an intersection, move out of the intersection if it is safe to do so, and then stop at the edge of the road until the emergency vehicle has passed • Check for additional emergency vehicles before pulling back out onto the roadway • Use your rearview mirror(s) frequently to monitor for emergency vehicles approaching from the rear • You may see an emergency vehicle before you hear it. Be attentive to the ashing lights. It will give you more time to select a safe place to pull over

Why should I license my dog, it never leaves the yard?

Dog owners like to believe that their dogs will never go missing. But the chances are that your dog will wander off at some point in its life.

All dogs over the age of 2 months in the City must be licensed for the current year. If your dog is not licensed you could receive a $50.00 ne.

Where do my dog license dollars go?

At two months of age all dogs must be licensed in the City of Williams Lake. Dogs’ licenses are their ticket home. Please ensure contact information with the City is up to date. It also lets other citizens know that a dog at large has a home and is not a stray. The money collected for dog licensing goes in to the Williams Lake BCSPCA and the Animal Control Bylaw Services.

Benets of a City of Williams Lake dog license: Reunites dogs with the owner Deliver public education programs Help neighbors resolve their animal related conicts Means your dog will spend less time in the shelter which reduces stress and minimizing the risk of contracting a disease Additional benets: Protection from dangerous dogs Educate dog owners about responsible ownership Warm shelter and care for the dogs Investigation of dog attacks As well licensing encourages population control.

Reduced licensing fees encourage owners to spay/ neuter their dogs.

Dog licensing is also a way for the City to get a better understanding of the number of dog owners throughout the city. With accurate information on the number of dogs residing in particular areas, the city may be able to plan and provide for various dog owner needs, such as municipal dog parks and spay/neuter initiatives.

Furthermore, licensing is a way to prove ownership of your dog. Unfortunately, dogs like any other property can be stolen. Licensing gives you a way to prove that your dog belongs to you. You can increase your chances of having your dog returned to you by providing your dog’s breed, sex and other identifying features (tattoos, microchips etc) when you license.

License Fees: Spayed or neutered dog $10.00 Unspayed or unneutered dog $20.00 Late application fee (after March 31st) $10.00 plus regular license fee Replacement license tag $5.00 Aggressive dog $200.00 If your dog is not currently correctly licensed and is impounded a $50.00 fee will be added to your total. (this is in addition to the licensing, impounding and boarding fees).

How often do I need to renew my license?

Once a year. Your dog’s license is valid for one year from January 1st to December 31st.

Junior City Council members say their pledge as they are sworn in at the Inaugural City Council meeting last Tuesday.

Volunteers at the annual Elders Luncheon all wore silly Christmas hats so they could all be identified easily by the elders. Jesse Mede, Kendra Tweedie, Nathan Jack, and Josh Leblanc all go to Williams Lake Senior Secondary and helped out all morning and into the afternoon.

Barkerville Heritage Trust The CRD will be supporting the Barkerville Heritage Trust and its 150th anniversary by incorporating the June 2012 CRD Board on the Road event as part of the celebrations.

The Heritage Trust is hoping to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Cariboo Gold Rush by working together with

communities along the Cariboo Wagon Road to grow the collective profile and encourage the tourism industry.

Support for the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce The Cariboo Regional District endorsed a recommendation from the South Cariboo Rural Directors’ Caucus regarding financial support for the South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce. The South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce requested financial assistance for the development and promotion of a new website. A total of $2,500 will be allocated from the South Cariboo Economic Development budget for the project.

CRD Accessible Trails Program The Regional District Board reviewed information about the continuation of the CRD’s Accessible Trails program as part of its application to the BC Community Recreation (BCCR) Program. A total of 14 trail sites are planned throughout the Cariboo Chilcotin.

Each site is in partnership with a local community organization committed to managing the project and the on-going maintenance of the site. A full listing of the proposed sites is available online at www.cariboord.bc.ca under Recreation.

What’s more, Alder achieved the feat while playing with his guitar Duct taped after it was damaged at his Williams Lake concert in November.

“I didn’t have time to get it fixed before the competition.”

Alder plans to build on his latest success with concerts throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe in the coming year. He will also be appearing on a yet-tobe-announced television show early in 2012.

“I’m just going to keep going forward,” Alder says.

“It would be such a great goal to be able to get my mom and my grandma a house.”

Alder is the only guitarist in the world to have won all major guitar competitions including the Guitar Superstar contest in 2010, Guitar Idol UK 2011and in 2007 winning the International F i n g e r s t y l e Championships.

He says he also has plans to make another trip to perform in the lakecity in the future.

Moleschi heads to Team Canada training camp Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor She may be attending university in another province, and playing rugby in other countries, but 21-yearold Kayla Moleschi is a Williams Laker and she is putting our city on the map with her rugby successes.

Since the age of 16 she has been dazzling coaches, friends and family with her natural ability to catch, and hold on to a rugby ball and has led many of the teams she’s played on to great successes.

“According to Mauro her coach, she got the ball and ran 70 metres for a try, her very first time on the field,” says Andrea Moleschi, Kayla’s mom.

According to her mom, Kayla has always been a sports fanatic starting at a young age playing catcher in hardball. She then moved on to hockey, which she still plays and then on to rugby and basketball during high school.

“A bunch of friends convinced her to come out and play rugby (when she was in Grade 9),” said Moleschi.

“And she went on from there.’

Kayla has played at the regional level in

Kayla Moleschi. the Provincial Regional Championships in 2007. She was also selected for the BC U17 team, which took gold at the National Championships in Newfoundland.

She participated at the U19 Women’s Provincial Regional Championships for the Cariboo, and saw her team win silver medals in the 2008 and 2009 National Finals.

Kayla was selected to play on the Canadian U20 team, participating in two games against the USA---the first in Tampa, Florida and the second in the final of the NACRA

tournament in the Bahamas last year.

In 2011 Kayla joined the inaugural BC U23 team to play in the Tier Two Division at the National Women's League Finals in Vancouver.

Not to mention all of these Canadian and B.C. rugby teams, Kayla debuted with the Lethbridge Pronghorns to start her university rugby career, and if that wasn’t enough she was chosen as part of Team Canada who just won the first IRB Women’s Challenge Cup in Dubai.

“She is the youngest on the team,” said Moleschi. “It was part of Canadian history and Kayla happened to be the very first one to score the first try for Canada.”

Kayla and her team started off by downing Brazil 31-0 beat the USA 36-0 in the semi final and won 26-7 against England in the final to win the IRN Women’s Challenge Cup. “We just think it’s awesome,” said Moleschi. “And we support her 100 per cent.”

Kayla’s older brother Curtis echoes his

mom’s comments and says he’s very proud of Kayla.

“She just doing great, and she’s a very hard worker that girl,” said Curtis.

Moleschi said it’s not just Kayla’s tight knit family who has supported her over the years, but other many people in the community as well.

“We did whatever it took to get her where she needed to go, which she is so very grateful for and she is a very humble person,” said Moleschi.

Team player “She is such a team player,” said Moleschi.

“I watched her numerous times and wondered why she didn’t go in for the try, but she’ll pass it off so another person can score the try- which to me takes more guts.”

Even though she has won multiple titles such as Canada West Rookie of the Year for 2011 and led teams to Nationals, her mom said she still gets nervous before games.

“I always tell her, ‘Go and do what you do best – rugby,’” said Moleschi.

And on top of

being a growing rugby super star, Kayla is also studying Kinesiology at the University of Lethbridge and is in her first year.

According to her mom, Kayla wanted to wait to go to school until she decided that what she wanted to study and not just go to school to play rugby.

“She wants to better herself and whether she comes out of this as a kinesiologist or as a P.E. teacher or something she can help other people at – that’s what she wants to do,” said her mom.

Kayla will be back from Lethbridge, Dec. 18 just in time for Christmas but her mom said her stay is short and then she is off to Victoria to spend January to May training with Team Canada.

“She’ll train Monday to Friday, and complete her studies online and by correspondence.”

The team will be training in hopes to compete in the

Olympics in 2016; Moleschi said since the team won in Dubai it is almost guaranteed the team will go to the Olympics.

“It gives other

younger kids (the motivation) to prove themselves,” said Moleschi of Kayla’s accomplishments. “It helps puts Williams Lake on the map.”

The accolades were announced Dec 12 by the B.C. PGA. “I am very honoured to be the recipient of this award from the PGA of B.C.,” Stellato said yesterday.

“This award would not be possible without the support from our Board of Directors at the club, our members, my golf club staff and the parents that enrolled their children in our Junior Program.”

Stellato said the WLGTC junior golf program’s success can be attributed to the help of Cody Wells and Chris Hicks, who

help run the practices.

The WLGTC junior program ran every Monday during the season with sessions for juniors nine and over and juniors eight and under.

Stellato represented the Northern and Kootenay regions and was up against Vernon’s Shannon Glenesk, Victoria’s and North Vancouver’s Dale Shienbein for the award.

The secret is in the tinfoil friends There are lots of traditions, many cultural, that have grown up with the family Christmas over the years. Some people open presents on Christmas eve, while others decide the 25th is time to get serious with some wrapping paper on gifts.

I suggested to her that she buy a turkey that would be about one pound per each person eating. She should put some celery, carrots and onions in the bottom of the cooking pan, along with a cup of chicken stock before putting in the turkey.

This helps make the gravy taste yummy.

When making the gravy I suggested she use the turkey drippings along with chicken broth, pepper and salt, then a little flour to thicken. When you are making gravy, the turkey should be resting under a tent of tinfoil...this keeps juices
