Young man in critical condition following crash Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor A 20-year-old man remains in critical condition following a single vehicle rollover at the rural community of Yunesit'in (also known as Stone Reserve) that involved as many as seven passengers. According to Alexis Creek RCMP, the accident happened at about 11:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 when a 99 Grey Chev Blazer was traveling westbound on Taseko Lake Rd and lost control on a corner, going into the ditch and rolling over several times.
The injured 20-year-old, who was likely ejected from the vehicle, was believed to be from the area and also the driver. He suffered spinal and head injuries. Speed and alcohol are suspected factors in the crash. Const. Lesley Smith of the RCMP North District said accidents like these are always tragic. “It's not only a family's worst nightmare, it also affects the community, especially a small rural community where the everyone knows each other.” The four other males in the vehicle had minor

NEW: Prosperity
Clock stopped as panel requests info DEALS OF THE WEEK! EC. 9
Angie Mindus photo
Brian Battison, vice president of corporate affairs for Taseko Mines, speaks to Chamber of Commerce members Thursday. Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Brian Battison of Taseko Mines put some very nervous Chamber of Commerce members at ease last week after media reports announced the New Prosperity project was put on hold. What happened, Battison explained, was that Taseko Mines received a letter from federal review panel chair Bill Ross last Tuesday, Nov. 25 requesting more information on the cumulative environmental impacts of the proposed mine, in combination with other past, present or future projects. Ross had stated there were “deficiencies” in Taseko's environmental impact statement. “Every day is an interesting day in my life with Taseko,” Battison said at a scheduled appearance at the monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon two days after the letter became public last Thursday. “There is no deficiency, in our view, in the Environmental Impact Statement. They have 15 to 18,000 pages that they need to read and review … so hopefully they just missed it.” Battison used his allotted time at the Chamber luncheon to review the impres-
sive numbers of its Gilbraltar Mine operation, giving local businesses a taste of what may come if New Prosperity is approved. Taseko purchased Gibraltar Mine a year after it was shut down in 1998, with only ten people working on care and maintenance until the company reopened the facility in 2004, hiring back 280 employees. Since reopening, Battison said Taseko has reinvested $700
million into the mine, brought the total numbers of employees working up to 630 and doubled its production to 180 million pounds of copper annually while increasing the mine's life expectancy another 27 years. Battison said last year Gibraltar Mine spent $82.5 million in the Interior and doled out $48 million in wages. “Now we'd like to build another mine in the community,” Battison said, leading into his talk about New Prosperity, the largest undeveloped gold and copper deposit in Canada which sits right beside and below Fish Lake, also known as Teztan Biny. Battison said Taseko used global experts to ensure there are no “significant adverse environmental effects” as a result of New Prosperity and answered all the concerns outlined from the first, rejected proposal. Battison added that the provincial government has offered mineral tax revenue sharing with First Nations in the area which would amount to 37.5 per cent, or between $300 to $400 million in revenues over the 20 year life of the mine. “This, by any mea-
sure, is a responsible project,” Battison said. “It's a rare opportunity. These things don't come along every day.” Battisonn said it's time now to get on with the public hearings, and urged Chamber members to get on the list to speak at the hearings. “Don't be intimidated about standing up and telling them what your views are,” Battison said. “Other people are going to be doing it, and I don't want you to miss your opportunity.” Battison admitted however that the proposal is effectively at a stand still until panel members are satisfied their request for information has been answered. Last night, after press time, environmental groups were set to meet with members of the Tsilhqot'in National Government to join in a peaceful demonstration and walk to City Hall, where the TNG was scheduled to appear as a delegation before city council to oppose the mine. Last Thursday, Mayor Kerry Cook expressed city council's unanimous support for the mine.

Then the Williams Lake store temporarily fell on hard times in the mid 2000s when a big box competitor opened in town. “Our sales were down,” Carl recalls of the struggle. He met that challenge by taking a big risk and expanding the store to its current location. He also credits two defining moments with customers: one with a customer from Bella Coola looking for custom wedding supplies and another local asking about a special cake stand. With those requests, and some digging on Carl’s part, Dollar Dollar has become the go-to place for wedding supplies and also specialty baking items, by bringing in Wilton

Dates set for Sargent inquest
PRINCE GEORGE -- The BC Coroners Service has announced dates for the public inquest into the death of Blaine Conrad Sargent. The inquest will take place from May 6 through 10, 2013, at the Williams Lake Court Services building in Williams Lake. Sargent, aged 19, died at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia on Sept. 21, 2011. He had been taken to hospital after going into medical distress at the Prince George Regional Correctional Centre a short time after returning from a court appearance in Williams Lake. Presiding coroner Donita Kuzma and a jury will hear evidence from subpoenaed witnesses to determine the facts surrounding this death. While the jury may not, by law, make any findings of legal responsibility, it will have the opportunity to make recommendations aimed at preventing deaths under similar circumstances in the future. An inquest is a formal process that allows for public presentation of evidence relating to a death.

TRU North Happenings By Jacquie Johnston Students are beginning to see the employment opportunities available to those choosing to study business. Thompson Rivers University North offers the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program. A grounding in general business studies is developed in years 1 and 2, and students specialize an area of interest in years 3 and 4. Students receive high quality instruction from academics and practitioners and complete group work, give presentations and solve case studies as part of the curriculum. International Exchanges are available to students in their 3 and 4 year and all business students have the option of exploring Cooperative Education. TRU North is accepting applications for 2013 now! TRU North is running both Financial Accounting (BBUS 2210) and Introduction to Archaeology (ARCH 1190) in the winter semester! Both courses will be running during the evening and are offered to Grade 12 students through concurrent studies! It’s a great way to get ahead with university studies. Glanville disses on strike, Nash’s absence and Toronto It’s been a rough couple months for hockey fans as we are now into day 78 of the National Hockey League lockout. Both the owners and players look to be making little headway in a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The latest update is the idea of a players/owners only meeting without mediators and just the principal parties. This suggestion was thrown out by Commissioner Gary Bettman. The NHL has now cancelled 422 regular-season games, lost the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the AllStar weekend in Columbus. At the beginning of the strike I didn’t really care too much but as the weeks pass by I am really starting to miss it. When running out of conversation ideas, the Vancouver Canucks are often as good a default subject as the weather. I think it will really start to hit hockey fans hard in the New Year, especially in April when the Canucks would be making their usual playoff run. *** I am also upset that Steve Nash has seen such limited action for the Los Angeles Lakers. Nash injured his leg in the second game of the season and has not suited up since. However, Nash was in attendance Saturday to watch the L.A. Galaxy send David Beckham off in style with a 3-1 victory over the Houston Dynamo in the Major League Soccer Cup. Nash is actually a huge soccer fan and his brother Martin
played professionally for the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Canadian men’s national side. My dad had the privilege of coaching the Columneetza Cougars soccer team against Steve Nash’s Mt. Douglas team at the provincial AAA championships in Kamloops back in 1991. He recalls goalkeeper Dan Curtis pulling the ball out of his goal more than a few times. A testament to Nash’s incredible athleticism is in his Grade 12 year at St. Michaels University his school won basketball, rugby, and soccer AAA provincials and he was named the Most Valuable Player in all three sports. *** Now it’s time to bash on Canada’s largest city, Toronto, or as locals call it ‘Trona’. The Toronto Argonauts gave the city a much needed sporting boost with its Grey Cup victory over the Calgary Stampeders at home last week. However, with the Canadian Football League a far cry from the toptier NFL and only eight teams in the league, a Grey Cup title shouldn’t be too high on the civic pride meter. Not sure what it is with Toronto, but for such a large market, how do their professional teams continue to be so awful? The Bluejays have not been in the playoffs for 18 years, right after winning consecutive World Series in the early nineties. The Bluejays were atrocious this season but their huge off-season spending spree will hopefully turn things around.
The Maple Leafs were recently listed by Forbes Magazine as the first NHL franchise worth $1 Billion. However, the Leafs haven’t been in the playoffs since the VCR era with their last trip now seven years ago. Toronto FC, their MLS soccer team, has failed to make the playoffs in their five years of existence. Unfortunately, the only Canadian professional sports team in action now is the Toronto Raptors. They are again the bottom-feeders of the league this season. The Raptors have not seen the post-season in four years and have one playoff series win in their unheralded 20 year history. *** There was huge news from the Western Hockey League recently. The Dub’ dropped unprecedented fines on the Portland Winterhawks Thursday. The penalties for player benefit violations included the suspension of coach/general manager Mike Johnston for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs, the forfeiture of their first five picks in the 2013 WHL draft and first-round picks 2014-17, and a team fine of $200,000. The WHL commissioned international accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to conduct an independent investigation to determine whether there were any additional benefits extended to players during the past five seasons. The independent investigation identified 54 violations involving 14 players which have occurred over the past five seasons.

Jacob Jackson, 10, of Horsefly comes into town for the day Saturday to enjoy the free and festive activities offered at the Scout Island Nature with its second annual Green Holiday Gift Event. Jackson made a day of it, making a Christmas wreath and visiting his Grandma Diane Bland.
Getting real with Bob's Christmas letter Don’t you just love getting those sappy missives from friends and relatives included in their Christmas cards? Such as; Little Mary has now reached a height of three feet, two inches. Jill made the school band playing clarinet and Bobby has got his learner’s permit. Mickey’s stamp collection is growing but he spilt his glass of milk on it and now everything is stuck to everything. The big news in town is that the fire department has got a new truck. The car is still running well and I just had an
oil change so should be okay for awhile. Grace and I have now reached the 25 year anniversary of our marriage and have seriously decided to keep being intimate, although Grace still insists on twin beds. Our neighbours came over to celebrate
with a bottle of Andres Baby Duck. Our three week vacation this year was put on hold as we decided to stay home and work on the yard. Blah Blah Blah! Getting a bit snarly, I felt like sending them a note. Please do not grieve me any further with your annual letters which are of no interest to anyone except for your mother. Your lifestyle is a bore, deal with it. In fact, I think your lives are due for an extreme makeover! However that would be just too unkind. So instead, I am sending out one of my own in
response. Herewith; Dear Friends, I use to use New Times Roman as my favourite font, then switched to Helvetica to the point of obsession but finally gave way to Arial which I have been using for the past year. Guess what? Now I’m a big Verdana fan. Stevie has just got out of jail in time for Christmas. He was sent up for two years less a day. Apparently he does not get that straying off the righteous path has consequences. Uncle Chuck’s truck broke down for the ump-
teenth time so he got mad and shot the headlights out with his 12 gauge. Aunt Marnie is still on heroin but we’re hoping we can get her on methadone soon. Daddy is in a panic as he hasn’t ever paid taxes and now the government is after him. So now they are repossessing the house at the first of the month and we don’t know where we are going next. BTW do any of you have a basement suite? Our biker daughter Sally, was kicked out of her assertiveness class for being too aggressive. She showed up with
her new boyfriend Axel who gave her a stick knife for Christmas. He just about got arrested for picking up cigarette butts and pennies from the pavement. Now I don’t want to sound tacky, but is this guy human? (And who the hell would name their kid after a car part?) I had never met him, but did hear a lot about him. That’s funny, now that he’s here, he doesn’t look like the “Devil in Disguise.” Anyway, I have no cause for concern here as I don’t think their relationship is going to work. They have conjunct Jupiters.
Finally, as to my health? Well I’ve got gingivitis, tintinitis, gastritis, prostatitus and Saint Vitus Dance, but I yet live. You want to hear Uncle Bob’s philosophy of life? What was, was. What is, is. What will be, will be. There you have it. So what the heck, we carry on and do the best we can. Actually, there are not enough words in the English language to describe the true majesty of life, we can only experience it, feel it, intuit and love it for all our worth. Merry Christmas ya all!

Everyone Owns a Piece of these Tragedies
Grateful for community spirit
By Bob Simpson MLA Cariboo North It’s been disappointing to hear the United Steelworkers Union (USW) reaction to my comments that the USW and Worksafe BC should be included in any further investigations or inquiries into the Burns Lake and Lakeland mill explosions. Rather than addressing the substance of the concerns I’m raising, USW spokespeople have simply defaulted to the BC Liberals’ throwaway lines that either I don’t know what I’m talking about or that I don’t care about the workers who were injured or killed. The USW's dismissive response to my contention that their role in the two mill explosions ought to be formally examined suggests the union is not willing to learn what it can do to improve its own safety processes and systems to avoid these kinds of
Editor: I am writing to thank the many, many people in this community who searched recently for a young man who was missing for a worrisome period of time, and who was, thankfully, found safe and sound. This positive outcome was due to the tireless efforts of so many people. These people included a number of individual citizens, as well as the Williams Lake RCMP detachment and our local Central Cariboo Search and Rescue team. Some of the people who searched or helped with the search knew the young man; many did not, they simply got involved because they were concerned about a
tragedies in the future. It’s clear to me (as a former Vice Chair of a Corporate Safety Council for a major forest products company) that we’re likely looking at a whole system failure leading up to these mill explosions. Along with management and Worksafe BC, that system includes the individual workers and their union representatives. In BC, a worker's right to refuse unsafe work is protected by law. The ability to exercise that right should be further protected and facilitated in unionized workplaces. Therefore, if the two mills in question were sufficiently “unsafe workplaces to warrant the criminal charges being sought, as the USW now contends, then it’s fair to ask what the individual workers and their union did to raise any and all safety concerns that would war-
rant this after-the-fact claim. In short, if the Babine and Lakeland mills were accidents waiting to happen, then what documented steps did the USW take to enable their employees to exercise their right to refuse unsafe work and attempt to prevent these catastrophic incidents from occurring? Were these issues raised at Health & Safety Committee meetings? Were formal grievances filed? Did the USW ask Worksafe BC to conduct more inspections or lodge a formal complaint with the agency? Did the USW tell the companies they would walk out if steps were not taken to address the workers’ safety concerns? I am not saying that the USW did or did not take the appropriate steps; I’m saying that the entire safety system, which includes the individual workers
and their union, must be formally investigated to ensure the most comprehensive assessment of these incidents possible. Every part of the safety system in our mills must be dissected to ensure no other sawmill worker is killed or injured as a result of a systems failure – this system includes the USW.

Who's fooling who with the revamped PST Thomas Mulcair, Federal NDP leader says that unions have no influence on his party. He was in British Columbia as one of the speakers at the B.C. Federation of Labour convention recently. I think perhaps someone may have passed along some good B.C. bud to him just before he made that statement. It is the same as saying that business has no influence on the Conservatives. Jim Sinclair is once again the B.C. Fed boss man, and he said he pledges to work with all affiliates to see that a labour-friendly government is elected in Victoria. I don’t think you will hear Adrian Dix, B.C.

For lots of us, April 1st is synonymous with April Fool's Day and often it is associated with some pranks and funny stuff. Some of them are pretty realistic and do indeed turn out to offer some laughs when you realize you have been had by the proponent of that 'fool.' This coming April Fool's Day we switch over to a different method of taxation ‌ well it`s not different, because it is a makeover of the same old

Bill Vander Zalm and the NDP campaigned for the PST and although this alliance might seem like a 'joke,' I believe sometime not to far down the road we will understand we were 'fools' to go down that path. Braden Conrod takes charge in his Gold Medal match at PGSS. provincials where the athletes are pooled grade 8-12. Our first year students had intense matches, grades 8s taking on veterans and did very well. It's a good sign of what's to come in the season. Kerry Normand injured his shoulder still taking fourth in the 90kg weight class. First year Peter Fayowski took a bronze medal in his first ever tournament in the 110 kg weight class. Veteran Braden Conrod is starting his 8th year with the WLWC and had a clean sweep in the 54kg weight class. Going undefeated he brought home a Gold Medal for the Black and Blue. For the girls... Grade 8 Haleigh Stubitch was in a very
tough division, she battled with girls that have medalled at the Provincials. Despite the tough competition she just missed the podium taking fourth in the 51kg weight class. First year wrestler Danielle Schultz also had some tough competition, all four of her matches went a full three rounds. Each round is two minutes, and she missed the podium by one point, injuring her elbow, she took a very respectable 4th. Also in Grade 8, battling top athletes from the province is Mikaela Lemon taking a bronze medal win! Finally 3rd yr student Kara Pare, lost her first match yet battled her way to three consecutive wins taking the Gold Medal in the 57kg weight class!!
From our neighboring club 100 Miles Tianna Dykstra grade 9 took a silver medal in the 51kg weight class battling a provincial athlete from Smithers. Also taking silver was grade 8 Cody Kennedy in the 45kg weight class. This is his first year competing at the high school level. Combined we were 7th overall for the team standings. We have a very busy season ahead of us with many possible tournaments we have the option of attending. We will be travelling all over the province this year as we train for the BC Provincials which will be held the first weekend in March in Campbell River, Vancouver Island. Next up is War on the Floor in Langley on Dec 19-21.

Lifestyle change leads to the Cariboo rural setting.” With that in mind, Nelson and a boyfriend set off on a five-day real estate road trip in search of a new place to live that met her list of criteria. She said her new future community had to have a gas station, a great pub, a store and a big lake. “We had looked everywhere (in the province) and had given up. We stopped at the 150 Mile pub and were telling people our story when Linda Jorgensen flew in. It was so funny.” Nelson said the realtor listened when she told her she was looking for “an off-the-beatentrail kind of place,” and asked her if she’d ever been to Likely. “As soon as we drove down the hill, I was in love,” Nelson said of seeing her new community for the first time. “I just knew right away.” Nelson bought a holiday home in Likely and spent as much time as she could there
until she finally took the plunge, selling her home in Maple Ridge and moving to Likely full-time. In Likely Nelson, who has one grown son, likes to spend her time gardening, canoeing, cooking, entertaining, swimming and just generally doing “lake stuff.” Six days a week she also drives to her 18-month-old business, Dockside Hair Cuts, in Williams Lake. “It’s a beautiful drive,” Nelson says of the commute, noting she’s seen bobcats, lynx, cougar, owls, moose and grizzly bears on her travels. Ladies competitive curling team Simone Groundwater, Laura Ball, Mallory Sandhu and Cindy Brady win a qualifying spot at a tournament last weekend to compete in the BC Scotties Tournament of Hearts this January.
CURLING: Win
Team Groundwater headed to B.C. provincials Allison MacInnes. Feeling deflated, the ladies were unable to win against team Kristen Fox, moving them to compete in the third division. “I know you're not suppose to let it affect you but it can be hard to pop back,” Ball says, adding that the third qualifying game was a well-played competition from both sides with team Groundwater controlling the ends, and claiming a victory in an extra end Sunday afternoon. “It was a hard-fought weekend … every game is intense. You really have to keep your focus.” The ladies final game saw team Groundwater battle against team Kristen Fox once again. This match up however saw Team Groudnwater back in fighting form

Currently, the team is in the Super and Ladies leagues at the Williams Lake Curling Club, curling twice a week and practicing twice a week with cash spiels on most weekends. “It's a hectic schedule,” Ball says. “But we all love the sport. It's a challenge.” Groundwater's team is scheduled to play against world-reknown curler Kelly Scott's team from Kelowna for their game opener in the BC Scotties. “We're definitely optimistic,” Ball says of how they'll do at the provincials. “There are some amazing teams there, so we know it'll be a tough week.”

The BC Scotties, British Columbia's women's provincial curling championship, will be held in Cloverdale January 14-20, 2013, with the top ten teams across the province competing for the top spot which will be televised on Shaw cable. Winners from the BC Scotties will, of course, compete at the national Scott Tournament of Hearts, to be held this year in Ontario. Columneetza Cougars win third on home court Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The Columneetza Cougars Junior girl’s basketball team placed third on their home court at the Panagao Classic tournament on the weekend. “I thought the girls played well. We are very early in the season and have a lot to learn about the game and about each other, how to work together better and find each other's strengths on the floor,” said Columneetza coach Bridget Peel. The tournament featured five teams including the host Cougars, two from Nechako Valley Secondary from Vanderhoof, Correlieu from Quesnel and Wiliams Lake. Nechako Valley proved to be the class of the tournament as their Grade 10 side went a perfect 4-0 record and their Grade 9 team took second with a 3-1 record and only loss coming to their older schoolmates. Columneetza finished with a 2-2 record. They dropped their opening game Friday to the NVSS Grade 9 side 37-29. Columneetza made a 10-0 run in the third quarter to cut the lead to 20-18 but NVSS would pull away late in the game. High scorer for Columneetza was Ariel Zacharius with seven points and she was also named

player of the game. Columneetza defeated local rivals Williams Lake 39-30 in game two. Carly Magnuson was high scorer for CSS with 10 points and Kaylee Billyboy and Inderoop Randhawa added nine points apiece. Emma Pfleiderer netted 10 points for WLSS in the loss. Randhawa was named CSS player of the game and Skye Forcier was chosen for WLSS. Columneetza picked up a big 41-36 win over Correlieu Saturday morning after jumping out to a 12-3 lead. Correlieu battled back to lead 20-16 at half time. However, Columneetza would go on an 8-0 run to start the third quarter and propel them to a five point victory. Zacharias led CSS with 10 points, Billyboy added eight and was named player of the game. Columneetza dropped their final game 47-31 to NVSS Juniors. CSS high scorer was Randhawa with nine, while Magnuson drained eight and was named the player of the game. “We have a very established defence in the key with a determination to stop the ball. Offensively, our guards are stepping up to the challenge of orchestrating the plays that put us in the best position to

with nine points and was again named player of the game. WLSS dropped their final game 29-12 to Correlieu and Pfleiderer picked up her third player of the game award. Zacharias and Billyboy were named to the tournament allstar team for CSS and Pfleiderer was named from WLSS. Next action for Columneetza is a tournament at Dutchess Park in Prince George on Dec. 14 and 15.

Snowmobile season is here Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor There may not be too much snow in town yet, but don't let that fool you – the 2012/13 snowmobile season has arrived! Williams Lake Powder Kings Snowmobile Club president and avid snowmobiler Rick Jelley says snow is already falling in the nearby mountains and the club is holding its Annual General Meeting this Thursday, Dec. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Complex in Williams Lake to kick off the season. Jelley said anyone thinking of joining the 70-plus member club is encouraged to attend, where Mark Savard will give a talk on avalanche awareness and those in attendance could win door prizes of avalanche gear. Having a local snowmobile club act as an advocate on behalf of snowmobilers is critical for the future of the sport and Jelley hopes even more riders will join the organization this year. “Without a snowmobile club there is no voice on land and species issues,” said Jelley.
“We work with government to solve any issues and we try hard to keep the trails open.” Jelley said the club holds agreements with the ministry for use of trails, as well as maintains the parking lot, trails and safety cabin at Yank's Peak. A Powder Kings membership costs $50 per year per person and also gives the member a membership to the B.C. Snowmobile Federation. The fee goes toward club operating costs, insurance, cabin maintenance as well as keeping up the groomer which offers riders 18 sweet miles of groomed trails in the mountains. Club fees also help the club with improvements, such as the parking lot and outhouses at Yank's Peak built by the club in 2006. Club members will also enjoy several organized club outings, including three different day trips on trails in the area, a fun day to wrap up the season at Yank's Peak in the spring as well as the club's signature event, its sweetheart ride in February.
Jelley said the club's sweetheart ride is a 150-mile overnight trip which sees riders start at the Yank's Peak parking lot, ride over the Cameron Ridge and into Ghost Lake, then to Barkerville where riders will stay overnight in Wells. Riders return the next day over Yank's Peak. So, if snowmobiling's your sport, check out everything your local club has to offer. Information on the Powder Kings is available online at www. wlpowderkings.com Jelley urges everyone to get out and support your sport.
The Williams Lake Powder Kings snowmoblie club offers camaraderie. So get out and support your sport with a club membership.

What’s the Scoop! your guide to what’s going on in Williams Lake
IN THEATRES RISE OF THE GUARDIANS When an evil spirit known as Pitch the Bogeyman (Jude Law) tries to take over the world by inspiring fear in the hearts of children, the immortal Guardians, aka heroes from different childhood stories—Jack Frost (Chris Pine), Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), Sandman and Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin)—must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world. The film is based on William Joyce’s book The Guardians of Childhood however, there are some differences between the book and the movie. The book explores the origins of the characters while the film shows how these characters function in present time. One of the reasons for making them difference was so that audiences wouldn’t compare the book to the movie. So, according to the author, the book served as more of an inspiration for the world in the movie as opposed to being the basis of its plot. PLAYING FOR KEEPS George (Gerard Butler) once had it all—fame, fortune, a professional soccer career and a beautiful wife (Jessica Biel). But when a knee injury forces him off the field for good, he winds up losing more than just his career. His wife takes their young son and leaves because of George’s selfish and irresponsible behavior and the fallen star is reduced to making sports casting demo tapes in his guest house just to make ends meet. When the opportunity arises to take over coaching their son’s losing soccer team, George takes uses the gig to try and redeem himself. The only problem is, he can’t seem to avoid getting caught up in the messed up lives of his players’ families—like the father (Dennis Quaid) who throws money at him for favors, the wife (Uma Thurman) who manages to make her way into his bed while he’s out, or the mother (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who bribes him into sleeping with her by offering him his dream job. In between trying to stay out of trouble and landing a respectable job with a sports network, George struggles to reconnect with his family, who are already on the brink of losing any faith in him as a father.

HOrOscOpe Aries, avoid taking on more than you can handle at work and home this week. When tackling tasks, don’t be afraid to ask for and accept help. Family and romantic endeavors may have been put aside while work issues have been at the forefront, Taurus. It is time to shift priorities. Gemini, there’s not much you can do to change the course of this week’s events. You might want to consider swimming with the current instead of against it.
Cancer, overanalyzing your workload is not going to make it disappear any faster. Therefore, simply take your assignments at face value and just get started.
Last Week’s Answers
Virgo, although it seems like you have most of your financial woes worked out, now is not the time to get too cocky with spending. Being conservative is the way to go.
Christmas dinner ‘stuff’ in Ken’s Country Kitchen Christmas is close enough to start doing the Christmas dinner ‘stuff ’ in Ken’s Country Kitchen. Many of us are now doing grocery shopping for the Christmas Season. It isn’t nice to find out a few hours ahead of the Christmas dinner, that you forgot cranberries, so now is a good time to shop and take a list with you. We all have traditions at Christmas... each country and indeed each family have certain traditions that evolve around
the celebration of Christmas. Some families have their big dinner and open presents on Christmas eve while others wait until the 25th. In this country I suspect most of us open
presents with family or friends on the day we celebrate the Birth of Christ. Generally on Christmas Day we also have our big feast with turkey being the main entree and we also hang stockings. The tradition in our family for our big festive dinner is to have sweet potato as a side dish to the turkey entree. We have had sweet potato cooked and served every which way but loose. Simple is good. Take two sweet potatoes and a couple of carrots...chop them into similar size pieces
New experiences can be scary at first, but many times you will find that they are opportunities to learn and grow, Leo. Take full advantage of all opportunities this week.
so they cook evenly... then after they are done, mash them with a potato masher and add three tablespoons of butter along with pepper and salt to taste... You can add a number of other items that go into having a sweet potato dishes... try cinnamon, brown sugar or maple syrup to kick it up a notch. Here’s another way to cook these yummy potatoes... Sweet Potato Fried. 3 medium cooked sweet potatoes 2 eggs 2 tbsp water
1 cup fine dry bread crumbs oil Peel and cut potatoes into 1/4 inch slices. Sprinkle lightly with salt. Beat eggs with water and then dip potatoes in eggs and bread crumbs. Heat oil to 365 degrees and fry a few at a time until they reach a golden color and are done. Try some sweet potato in your dinner this Christmas. It may become a tradition, if not already. Bye for now and Goood Cooking
Libra, career developments have you riding high and you’re anxious to share your news with the world. This enthusiasm can be a good catalyst for change with others.
Scorpio, success may not come easy with a project you’re working on. But rest easy and take solace knowing you have tried things outside of your comfort zone.
Sagittarius, avoid confrontations at all costs, as this week you will not come out victorious. Keep a low profile and don’t ruffle any feathers. Capricorn, if you think about things too long, there’s a good chance you won’t act at all. Instead, consider your options quickly and then get going on your plans. Quality time spent at home or with the family has buoyed your spirits, Aquarius. The next step on your relaxation journey is to book a vacation to a warm area of the world. Don’t underestimate your ability to garner quite a following, Pisces. There are many people just waiting to hear what you have to say next.
