Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Inspired by books written about wilderness adventures as a young girl living on a remote coastal island in the 1940s, Betty Frank pursued her own dreams with fierce tenacity and lived life on her own terms in the rugged backcountry of Quesnel Lake as a guide outfitter and trapper.

Still vibrant today at 80 years old, Betty Frank is now the subject of her own book, a memoir fittingly entitled The Legendary Betty Frank, the Cariboo’s Alpine Queen, she collaborated with Williams Lake author Sage Birchwater on the project which is hot off the presses this week.

“I grew up on an island with just boats.

I felt confined,” recalls Frank of her early years, first hunting deer at nine years old.

As a young woman Frank saw becoming a school teacher as her path to the freedom she craved in the backcountry and arrived in the Cariboo as a teacher at the Alkali Lake Ranch in 1954, teaching many children of pioneering families such as Paddy and Sandy Twan, Marsela, Audrey and Chick Bowe and Sharon and David Maurice.

“I always wanted to be a guide outfitter and work with horses and pack dogs. I wanted to do what I read about.”

It is safe to say Frank did that and then some, eventually

amassing a one million acre guiding and trapping territory in one of the most physically challenging and remote terrains in the world; with her area spanning from the edge of Bowron Lake Provincial Park in the north, to the heights of land above McBride in the east and south to her lodge at Quesnel Lake.

“You couldn’t cover it all, but I tried to get to most of it,” Frank said of her territory, where she built or maintained nine log and tent cabins and made trails over creeks and rivers and through bogs and rainforests to get to the alpine meadows she loved so much.

NEWS BRIEFS MULTIPLE STABBINGS IN LAKE CITY Four young men were treated for stab wounds following a group fight in the early morning hours last Saturday.

According to a police press release, RCMP were called out to the old Poplar Glade School site on 11th Avenue to a report of multiple people being assaulted with knives.

Upon arrival, RCMP and BC Ambulance Service found four young male adults that had been stabbed.

All four were transported by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

“The victims have been uncooperative in that they are not providing police with the names of the assailants,” state police.

Police have determined however that all parties were known to each other.

Police are asking anyone with information, or who may have heard or see anything to contact the Williams Lake RCMP at (250) 392-9211 or Crime Stoppers.

Four candidates run for Area E Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor While some CRD electoral areas have directors in by acclamation, electoral area “E” Dog Creek/ Mountview has not two candidates, but four.

Bill Carruthers, Brandy Dickey, Bryon Kemp and Stacy Wong are all vying to be the area’s next director.

Carruthers says he was motivated to run because he received an endorsement from the current director Steve Mazur.

“I am interested and concerned about the interests in the area,” says Caruthers

who lives on Hodgson Road.

Carruthers says there are a number of issues coming up that will have to be dealt with at board level.

And Kemp, who lives at Chimney Lake, says he received quite a few phone calls from neighbors and others in the area encouraging him to run and says he wants to continue the work done so far.

“I want to carry on the work that Steve has done for the area,” says Kemp.

Kemp says the main issue facing Area E is the sewer and water situation in the Dog

Creek and Mountview areas.

“Problems have occurred and it really has to be taken a look at and dealt with right away,” says Kemp.

Candidate Stacy Wong echoes the concerns regrading water and sewage problems in the area and she says even though she doesn’t live in Area E, they are her neighbours.

“My neighbours problems are my problems,” said Wong, who lives in Westridge.

She said everyone is entitled to clean water and something needs to be worked out for the residents regarding

their water supply.

Brandy Dickey is the fourth candidate and she too doesn’t live in Area E, but in the City of Williams Lake.

“I think the Cariboo as a whole needs good representation. I am already aware of the issues and the CRD does work jointly with the City,” said Dickey.

Dickey was the previous Area E director before Mazur and she feels she is a good candidate for director because she could hit the ground running, as

she already knows the ropes.

She agrees with all the other candidates that a major issue facing Area E is water and sewer, but also notes that Area E is more than just the fringe area.

“It’s important not to forget the rural people in Area E, the ranchers and farmers,” said Dickey. “They contribute to Williams Lake as a whole and have issues too.”

Elections take place on Nov. 19.

Getting the scoop on fluoride Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Last week the City gave residents the opportunity to come out and get informed about fluoride.

At the open house held last Thursday at the Fire Hall, there was lots of information available to the public in the form of experts and printed information.

The open house ran from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and saw a good turnout of interested residents, many who were not swayed one way or the other just yet but who were merely looking to be informed.

“I am not for it or against it, I am just here to ask questions and to learn,” said George Raney, a local resident.

On Nov. 19 city residents will have the opportunity to decide for themselves whether they want fluoride added to drinking water. The matter is going to referendum on Election Day. City officials have said the cost to add fluoride is increasing threefold this year.

While the previous council accrued $12 million in long-term debt, we have built partnerships that generated $12 million in government funding, thereby substantially reducing our costs.

SCOTT NELSON: Williams Lake has one of the smartest investment strategies in B.C. Williams Lake surpasses many rural communities on positive pro-active increases in investment. However, I have a fundamental dif-

ference of opinion on the past three years of operational spending.

The City, with the right leadership, can attract, partner and create addition opportunities in TRU-North University, forestry, mining, gas, small business, and large commercial development to assist Williams Lake in becoming a much stronger diversified economy.

We have invested in the downtown with the Spirit Square retaining wall expansion, also completing extensive paving and intersection redesigns on Oliver St., 2nd Ave. and 3rd Ave. We are excited about our new relationship with the BIA and will continue to work together towards a safe, accessible and vibrant downtown.

The downtown core is vital to many small businesses in Williams Lake. They provide a unique niche to our shoppers as a key destination. Again we must get our spending under control.

I propose what is called zero based budgeting that requires every department to be able to justify any expenditure with Council making the decision on any changes that may occur after the budget has been passed.

Lakecity council candidates talk platforms Geoff Bourdon Bringing a younger perspective, as well as a business perspective to City Council is something Geoff Bourdon feels has been important over the last three years, and in order to keep that up, as well as help keep council on track, he has decided to run for council again.

“I want to help keep City Council going in the same direction,” said Bourdon. “We need to be strong in these challenging economic times.”

He said Council needs to have stable long-term plans, as well as be open minded to different potential sources of development.

“Williams needs to continue with the aggressive economic developments,” said Bourdon.

“Other possibilities for industry growth lay in tourism.”

Bourdon also thinks it’s important for decisions not to be made emotionally and feels he is not prone to making emotional decisions.” “ I can make objective and analytical decisions,” said Bourdon.

Paul Kondolas After 25 years of running a business and living in Williams Lake, Paul Kondolas has decided it’s time to take a more active approach to being involved in his

community.

He has decided to run for one of six councilor seats in the upcoming municipal elections, stating the main reason is the economy.

“I think we need to cut all the red tape at City Hall,” said Kondolas.

“We need to make it easier for business developers, rather than chasing them away.”

Kondolas said he feels there needs to be combination of business developments in the downtown core and expansion on Prosperity Way. “We need to get a comparison of what we are doing in comparison to other communities,” said Kondolas. “To see what we need to do to attract more industry to Williams Lake.”

Another area Kondolas said he feels has lacked over the past three years is long term planning, mainly in regards to the Cariboo Memorial Complex.

“I am a huge supporter of the swimming pool,” said Kondolas.

“We have to start planning and should have started planning five years ago.”

This is Kondolas’ first time running for councilor, and said he feels like he has had a good response so far.

“I needed to step back and look at the big picture,” said Zacharias.

“And I decided I really wanted to run for council again.”

Between working at the family business, which she is scaling back to two days, Zacharias also sits on several Construction Association Boards on top of sitting on council for the past three years.

Although she is very busy, Zacharias feels her seats on the different construction boards gives her valuable insight to that area of the economy.

“I am running (for council) again because I am very interested in continuing the work already started by council,’ said Zacharias.

Before running for Council in 2008, she was Area D director and she said she loved working with the CRD, but it was on a much broader level.

“On City Council, I feel I got into the more detailed work,” said Zacharias. “I feel more apart of shaping the destiny of our community,”

Surinder Rather has served proudly on City Council because he says helping people is a passion for him, and his desire to serve the community is still strong.

Rather is seeking his seventh term on Council, and was first elected in 1993. He has lived and worked in Williams Lake for the last 37 years.

“My past, present, and future are here,” said Rather.

Rather has been a key person in various projects over the years, including the Airport take over, the construction of the ‘Y’ intersection and in the building of the museum.

“A lot has changed (over the years) and a lot more needs to be done,” said Rather. “I feel my common sense approach can help to shape the community for the future.”

Rather said his record speaks for itself and he feels he does the best he can for residents.

“I am elected to represent the community, not to be a dictator,” said Rather. “I am not elected to tell them what they want - the key is working together.”

Rather said he likes

challenges and is ready to work hard to find solutions. He is a firm believer in only promising a little and working hard to deliver a lot.

“I never jumped into public life for any personal gain,” said Rather. “ I am just happy serving the people.”

Richard Vollo This is Richard Vollo’s third kick at the can for a councilor seat, so he is anxious to see what happens this time around, stating there are some very good people with their names out.

Vollo said he knows that being a councillor is more than just meetings every second Tuesday, and said he’s willing to do the work required.

“Williams Lake needs to have a vision, a strategic plan, and established and defined goals,” said Vollo. “Sadly, that has been lacking the past three years.’

Vollo said he thinks the City needs to work harder to improve and market our existing assets, namely the Williams Lake Stampede.

“We should be marketing to the 18-25 year olds, stampedes have become very popular,”

Try something new to chase away boredom Life has a tendency to get a little boring and repetitive, but if you keep up with adding a little spice with new experiences and new people the boringness doesn’t take over.

I am someone who believes in never saying ‘no’ to a new activity, food or event if there isn’t a good reason not to.

Another person who doesn’t let the boredom bug catch him is Kane Fraser, our illustrious columnist who is about to embark on his adventure to race the Baja 1000. He obviously said yes to the thought of trying something new.

Then of course there is Betty Frank, who seems hell-bend to live life on the edge, brimming full with adventure and danger at every corner. I don’t know too many people who could survive a week east of Quesnel Lake, let alone a lifetime, so our hat’s off

to Betty.

Now I know I don’t live quite as adventurously as Ms. Frank, however this past week I was offered the opportunity to have a ride in RZR, now if you don’t know what that is that is okay because until last Thursday neither did I. Basically it is an off-road, four-wheeldrive vehicle with crazy suspension and power.

And I got a little test drive in one of these bad boys.

It was a little scary on the vertical hills, steep drops, huge jumps and crazy corners, but overall I had a great time. I was holding on for dear life and kept my eyes shut for the majority of the ride, but I am glad I had the opportunity. I now have a better idea of how the Baja 100 race will be, even if it’s just a tiny insight to one crazy race. And my ride made for a great story to tell my boyfriend and family,

that is one thing I love about being a reporter my day is usually more interesting than ‘I just sat in the office all day’ (which does happen, but not all the time).

I have the opportunity during my workday to meet tons of interesting people, go to different events and just generally get out in the community, which I love to do.

When I was growing up here, I never had the opportunity to partake in a lot of the ‘local’ activities such as horse back riding. I am a girl from the Cariboo, and I don’t know how to horseback ride.

How embarrassing. It’s on my list for sure of things to do in the near future. One thing is for sure, I want my weekend plans to involve more than just some T.V. and vegging on the couch. Maybe this week I’ll go for a drive out West and explore a little, wouldn’t want my like to get dull and

repetitive.

Yes, working at a weekly paper can get repetitive, with Wednesday being calm, Tuesdays being crazy, but it’s never dull with a new week of news and events and that is what keeps it interesting. I for one do not want to be bored at work day in and day out just watching the time drift by. I love that my days are always slightly different and I always get to meet new people and experience new things.

Even though it can get a little crazy in here, and working on deadline is stressful (less than three hours away right now), I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I like being challenged, and I like trying to make this paper the best it can be, and cover the most events we can. What more can you do, but to just try your best every day and have a good time doing it?

We went for a ride in the race buggy on Sunday October 30, 2011 to test it out and see how it fit me and if we needed any adjustments. Ricky-Bobbi and Heino have also been coaching me on how to drive and the things you need to think about. One of the things Heino has

said to me, repeatedly, is don’t hit a rock, if you hit a rock you will tear a wheel and corner off.

On the ride, the purpose was to push it as hard as we could, as I could, and to see if anything broke (from driving, not hitting things you shouldn’t be), how it handled and what oversights we may have had. Well I pushed myself, about 2 miles in I almost rolled it over a 20 foot bank, Heinos’ only remark was “Nice recovery.”

Another time down the trail a little further we were going forwards until the right back wheel lost a little traction in a corner and then we were going backwards, again we managed to not crash.

I told Heino when I first got in it would take me ½ an hour or hour to get used to the hand controls. Every vehicle I drive they are set up a little different, so it does take some time to get used to a new ride. It took about an hour and then I was comfortable with them, right up until the set screws came loose and they were flopping around a little. That was kind of funny and the reason we were out trying it, not a big deal though a couple turns with an allen key and the hand controls were fine again. Heino gave me one piece of advice during the time we were driving together,

don’t over steer, under steering is better. The reason is you do not want to go sideways into a corner and then have a tire hook on a rock because you could be rolling through the air.

Another time after Heino and RickyBobbi switched, so Ricky-Bobbi was now riding with me we found ourselves up on two wheels at one point going around a corner, I really thought we were up on one wheel for a second, but we managed to make it through that to, all Ricky-Bobby said was “Nice recovery.” These guys have been racing for years, so they have the experience to know what could happen.

two RZR’s driven by Dennis and Heino, I think they stopped to check fuel. We were going through a rough muddy section and my goggles were really dirty. I thought I had time to wipe, which is done really quickly and I did see the ROCK, Ricky-Bobby knew I had seen it.

In the time it took me to wipe my goggle and touch the wheel again we hit the rock and I sheered off a bolt holding the control arm. I learned several things from this. First of all, you do it in a race and your race is over. Secondly, be more selective on when you wipe your goggles. Finally, slower is faster.

I never really knew what that meant, lots

of racers say it. What it means is if you crash it can take 2 hours to fix the machine, if you slow down a couple of miles per hour, or even five, you might have more control, avoid the crash and finish the race.

I am glad we went out and did this, and yes I am glad I learned this lesson as we have ten days to fix it and are not in the race.

I would just like to say that when you are disabled like me I wake up every day and I can’t walk and that will likely never change. If you have another disability then you wake up and have to deal with it. That’s called life and we just deal with it. We can and I Believe.

New and exciting things happening in Wildwood Editor, The community needs to be aware of the exciting things that are happening in the Wildwood area.

Wildwood VFD Community Association with the CRD is proposing to bring extremely popular and healthful Disk Golf to the greater community of Williams Lake.

In the simplest terms Disk Golf is walking and throwing a Frisbee.

On the Wildwood proposed Nine Hole course, one would throw their Frisbee three times along a fairway to land the Frisbee in the basket.

The truly wonderful part of Frisbee Golf is absolutely anyone from small child, the handicapped, to very senior citizens can play. The big difference between real golf and Frisbee Golf, is that, with

Frisbee Golf all you need to play the game, is a low cost Frisbee, or in game terminology, a Disk or two.

The proposed Wildwood course won’t cost you a fortune to play, a small donation, on the honor system, of a Toonie or a Loonie is all you and your whole family will have to pay, these small donations will be used to maintain this course.

To build this course, this coming spring, however is going to take some help, the community of Wildwood is going to need people from all walks of life in the greater Williams Lake area to come and help put this together. So if you could be strong and go and ‘take-one-for-the-city’, this election, it would be appreciated to know that at least a majority, if only slight, would be voting for mayors and council.

There will be, as you certainly know now, the now infamous fluoride’ referendum, will also require a vote on Nov 19th.

There have been questions regarding the present treatment system, or lack of it, and these queries had Mayor Cook, Past

Mayor Nelson, and City top gun Brian Carruthers all firing salvos in the media.

The only thing I know for sure is Past Mayor Cobb, didn’t have anything to do with the current battle.

There are fourteen good folks ready to scrap for six seats on council for three years. Four councillors are asking for repeats, Geoff Bourdin, Sue Zachariahs, Laurie Walters and Surinderpal Rather will fight fourteen council wannabes, including former council-

lor and mayor Ivan Bonnell. My money says Surinderpal and Bonnell, should be two of those who will make it into the top six.

With three real quality contestants vying for the Mayors chair along with a large slate of Councillor candidates, I’m hoping we will go above a 50 percent turnout this Civic Election in Williams Lake, and then at least we will be going on the right side of respectable, in terms of voter turnout.

Let’s hope that is the case.

City Council and staff strongly value APC recommendations and this can have a considerable influence on decision making.

APCs perform best when they are well informed, passionate and transparent. Meetings occur through the entire year, with significant breaks only occurring in

Here are a few examples: 1. Minimizes the threat of your dog getting hit by a motor vehicle.

2. Walking your dog is mentally stimulating which can drain a high energy dog.

3. Walking your dog on a leash will discipline your dog and encourages their natural instinct to walk.

4. Minimizes your dog getting into hazardous material.

5. Prevents an encounter with a potentially aggressive dog.

A REMINDER ABOUT PULLING OVER FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES

Pull over for emergency vehicles

Recent incidents involving emergency vehicles have prompted the Williams Lake Fire Department to remind residents to pull over when an emergency vehicle is approaching with lights and siren on.

The British Columbia Motor Vehicle Act, Section 177, states: “On the immediate approach of an emergency vehicle giving an audible signal by bell, siren or exhaust whistle, and showing a visible ashing red light, except when otherwise directed by a peace ofcer, a driver must yield the right of way, and immediately drive to a position parallel to and as close as possible to the nearest edge or curb of the roadway, clear of an intersection, and stop and remain in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed.”

Here’s how to help: • Signal, pull over to the nearest edge of the road on the approach of an emergency vehicle and stop • If at an intersection, move out of the intersection if it is safe to do so, and then stop at the edge of the road until the emergency vehicle has passed • Check for additional emergency vehicles before pulling back out onto the roadway • Use your rearview mirror(s) frequently to monitor for emergency vehicles approaching from the rear • You may see an emergency vehicle before you hear it. Be attentive to the ashing lights. It will give you more time to select a safe place to pull over

2. Cardboard – corrugated cardboard and regular cardboard such as a cereal box.

3. Plastics – must have the recycling symbol on it and the number inside the symbol must be 1 through 7. No Styrofoam allowed.

4. Metal food cans – food or beverage containers.

Note: all above mentioned products must be clean.

The most common question asked by residents is: Can GLASS be put in the curb side recycling cart?

The short answer is NO GLASS ALLOWED. PLEASE DO NOT put glass in the recycling cart.

Glass in the recycling cart could end up broken.

Broken glass spoils the recyclables and puts the workers who do the sorting at a great risk of injury.

Instead of putting glass in the curb side recycling cart, it can be taken to the Central Cariboo Transfer Station or Canadian Tire.

Starting this fall the City of Williams Lake’s garbage contractor will be putting a yellow sticker on your recycling cart if they nd glass in the cart as a reminder for you that glass is not allowed.

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor The Central Cariboo Arts and Cultural Society has taken over the old fire hall building and have been occupying the space for a year now, and if you haven’t been in to see the huge transformation you’re missing out.

And, while you’re there, stop in and say ‘hi’ to Leah Selk, the coordinator of the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

“I have a wide array of tasks,” said Selk of her new and unique position. “I am here to assist and help the arts and cultural groups in the central Cariboo and (plan) events.”

In March of 2011, Selk was hired for the full-time position of coordinator at the newly incorporated Central Cariboo Arts and Cultural Society.

eventually led to her current position at the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society.

“I manage the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Centre which includes three tenant groups and a couple of rental rooms that are available to groups,” said Selk. “(The centre) is getting used a lot and is really busy,” Selk said another big part of her job is keeping the public informed about arts and culture in the community.

“I can tell people what events are going on in the arts, what groups are available and also advocate for the arts,” said Selk.

She also points out that even a group who is not necessarily an arts and culture group can benefit from the society. She says if they are planning an arts and culture related event she can assist them with getting the word out and help look for possible partnerships.

Selk says that there are many great volunteers in the arts community and they do a tremendous job bringing the community together.

“Community is what you make of it,” says Selk. “And I’ve come to realize (Williams Lake) is home.”

Selk graduated from Columneetza in 2000, and was one of the people who got the darkroom up and going there. She went on to take a Visual Arts diploma at Camosun College in Victoria, and to Concordia University in Montreal where she completed a fine arts degree with a major in photography.

Selk stayed a year longer to take more marketing and financing courses that were not required for her degree, but that she was interested in taking. During that last year in Montreal, Selk says she jumped at any opportunity to work in an arts-related setting, and it was that jumping that landed her back in her hometown.

Selk moved back to Williams Lake in 2008 to work part-time at the Station House Gallery as the exhibition coordinator and she worked as the Gallery’s summer student for the two summers before that.

Along with the job at the Station House, it was reconnecting with a former schoolmate and falling in love that brought Selk back to the lakecity from Montreal. Her background in the arts

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Spectators were wrapped in blankets, with gloves and toques on and a hot drink in their hands last Saturday as they cheered on their team during the sevenaside rugby zones last Friday and Saturday hosted by the Williams Lake Stags.

There were teams from as far away as Terrace who traveled over 800 kilometres to come play rugby in three different age groups.

Williams Lake teams came out on top with a first place in the Junior A boys for Columneetza, a first place for Williams Lake Senior Secondary in the Junior AA boys, and a first place finish for the Columneetza Senior Boys.

The Junior A gold medal game was between the Stags and the Cougars, with the Cougars coming out on top.

“It was a close game and could have gone either way, “ said one of the event organizers, Rodger Stewart. “Just a few small mistakes between the winner and loser.’

When it came to the Junior AA gold medal game, the Grade 10 boys from Williams Lake Senior Secondary had no mercy against the visiting Prince George team. The final score was 52-0, and at least five players scored tries for the Stags in the one-sided game, and P.G. still walked away with silver medals.

When it came to the senior boys’ gold medal game, it came down to an old friendly competition between the local high schools in what the coaches describe as a “friendly battle the boys enjoy.”

In this particular game, the Cougars managed to score a try, and the Stags couldn’t capitalize on their close attempts.

“It was a great couple of days of rugby,” said Morley Wilson, on of the tournament organizers.

Late goals highlight tournament Williams Lake Bantam Tier 2 Timberwolves were in action this past weekend as they hosted a tournament at Cariboo Memorial Complex.

Action started Friday afternoon as the T-wolves hosted Quesnel in a high scoring affair with the local team scoring eight goals. Chase DuBois potted a hat trick while Griffen Outhouse was between the pipes in the 8-4 win. Other goal scorers were Justin Hansen, Nick Higgs, Josh Novakowski, Tyler

Chapman and Spencer Neufeld.

Later in the evening, the Timberwolves played Prince George and came up with their second victory of the day with goals coming from DuBois, Hansen, Higgs and Dylan Sellars.

Jaxon Nohr picked up the win in net.

Saturday the team played Fort St. John in a game that the wolves were winning 7-5 with 5 minutes left and ended up losing 8-7.

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor As the countdown to leaving for Mexico inches closer to the single digits for Kane Fraser, he is relatively calm and more excited about the notorious race that he is going to be part of in a mere 14 days.

“We’re getting excited, looking forward to getting down there with the team and just experiencing it,” said Fraser, who has been confined to a wheelchair for the last thirteen years and will become one of only a handful of people with such a disability to ever attempt such a difficult race.

And Fraser’s not the only one to share the excitement of the race,.

His team is as well and a main part of that team is his racing partner and friend, Heino Seibert.

“There has been significant preparation over the last four months,” said Seibert.

“It’s not something that just happens overnight.”

Fraser came up with the idea to race in the Baja 1000 -- one of the world’s toughest off road races -- after watching an inspiring documentary on the event and asked his friend to help him make it happen.

It’s been four months of going hard on all the preparations and everything from logistics, to the race vehicle and strategies have been worked on by Fraser, Seibert and his team in the last few months.

“Once we committed, we started research-

“For this particular race preparation is everything; preparation of the crew, preparation of the race vehicle and learning about it.”

Fraser added it’s not just about the race itself and the crew but about being prepared mentally as well.

“You have to keep your mind sharp,” said Fraser.

Fraser’s three goals going into this race were to raise $25,000 for the Rick Hansen Foundation, which he says they are well on their way to doing, create awareness about the abilities of people with disabilities and inspire at least one person to achieve their best.

“There is a lot of buzz out there about

what we’ve done and what we’re doing,” said Fraser. “And from that perspective, the community support has been great.”

“I think more about the strategy of the race, so that it’s fluid and we don’t have any downtime,” said Seibert.

Fraser will be driving most of the race, his goal is drive for more than half, and be in the vehicle for the whole race.

“It’s more of a mental game than a racing game,” said Seibert.

“You need to remain in control of your emotions and remain calm.”

Both agree the real race will begin at the last 100 miles and if they’ve made it that far they figure they have a pretty good chance of finishing.

Fiddling around in the Chilcotin Deb Trampleasure Special to the Cariboo Advisor The Tl’etinqox-T’in community at Anaham Flats has been working hard to develop an extensive mental health promotion program which this past week included the therapeutic effects of music.

Throughout the week of Oct. 24 to 28, all students in the Anaham Band school were presented with the opportunity to learn how to play the fiddle and almost every student eagerly took part in the week of musical immersion.

The students were very drawn to the fiddle music and worked hard to focus and learn the instrument that has been played for generations in many First Nations communities.

The teachers’ whole heartedly shared in the learning with some teachers even purchasing their own instruments prior to the start of the workshop.

The week was made possible by the community bringing in top ranking musicians and fiddle instructors Calvin Cairns and Chelsea Sleep.

Cairns has taught since 1996 at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he teaches group classes in fiddling.

Cairns has toured around the world and Canada as a performer with Stringband and The Romaniacs, and The Bill Hilly Band.

Anaham Band school students take a lesson on the finer points of fiddling during an all week workshop held by the Tl’etinqox-T’in community last week. was based on his eight years of experience and development of fiddling in the Dene communities of the Deh Cho (Mackenzie River) Northwest Territories.

Cairns’ teaching partner in Anaham was the talented fiddler Chelsea Sleep, who is the Musical Director of the youngest group of the Coast String Fiddlers based out of Gibsons, B.C. Chelsea leads her own energetic fiddle group, aptly named Bad to the Bow, who are now completing the production of their first CD. Classes in fiddle and guitar were also offered to adult learners who came into the school to learn music alongside the youth. Guitar instruction was offered

by Lillian Squalian and Tanya Hutchinson of Denisiqi Services Society who also lead the drum opening of the workshop. Community Health Director Mary Thomas and her staff worked to support the event as well as Mary had a chance to sit down for a fiddle lesson herself.

The end of the week culminated in an energetic fiddle concert opened by Chief Joe Alphonse and featured the young fiddlers who performed their fiddle tunes to a smiling and appreciative audience.

Also joining the fiddlers were members of the Cariboo Chilcotin Youth Fiddle Society including Maria and Mathew Baliff who joined in with their

fiddles to support the new fiddlers in their first community performance. At the conclusion of the concert Cairns presented the school with 12 fiddles donated by Fiddleworks Community Society based out of Salt Spring Island.

Over the years fiddles have been graciously donated to the Northern Fiddle Program in the NWT

by Fiddleworks to expand their now very successful fiddle program in remote communities.

Fiddles have now been routed towards the Chilcotin with the help of Cairns in hopes that the art of fiddling will catch on.

CRD Board Highlights – October 28, 2011 150 Mile House Anniversary Report Mr. John Hoyrup, and representatives of the 150 Mile House Anniversary Committee, appeared before the Board to report on the 150th anniversary event. 150 Mile House’s 150th Anniversary took place on Saturday, July 16, 2011. Over 1,000 people visited the displays and attended events during the anniversary celebration. Some of the featured events included tours through the historic 150 Mile Red School House, a petting zoo, a family dance, and a number of displays depicting 150 Mile House throughout the years.

CRD Supports CCCTA Resolution The Cariboo Regional District will provide a letter to the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast Tourism Association in support of a resolution directed

to the provincial government. The resolution calls for legislative changes to threshold limits of the Tourist Accommodation Assessment Relief Act. Some of the proposed changes include: Increase the $150,000 threshold to $500,000 Raise the threshold for the reducing formula from $2,000,000 to $4,000,000 Introduce a formula to increase the threshold and reducing formula ceilings in proportion to average assessment valuation increases for accommodations.

Community Works Funding for Alexis Creek & Watch Lake The Alexis Creek and Watch Lake Community Clubs will be receiving Community Works funding for energy efficiency upgrades for their respective Community Halls.

Community Club made an application to the CRD of up to $12,500 to install new windows and doors at the Alexis Creek Community Hall. The installation will improve energy efficiencies and reduce heating costs by dropping heat loss. The Watch Lake & District Women’s Institute has requested $12,000 to replace two old refrigerators and perform lighting upgrades.

Anahim Lake Airport Terminal Construction Update The Regional District received an update from the Anahim Lake Airport Commission regarding construction of the new airport terminal. The Commission unanimously supports the project, which will have a footprint of approximately 1,000 square feet and be designed in a log house style. The site

design for the terminal building is underway.

Issuance of a Request for Proposals for the building design is planned for the winter 2011, while construction will commence in the spring of 2012.

New Agriculture Planning Policy Reviewed The CRD Board of Directors reviewed a proposed Agricultural Policy. The policy, which will now be distributed to stakeholders for comment and input, is intended to assist with agricultural edge planning to encourage compatible land uses between the rural/nonrural or farm/non-farm interface to reduce conflicts and recognize agriculture as a priority land use. The policy provides a regulatory framework related to fencing, buffering and screening specifications, and other measures such as agricultural awareness, minimum

lot size requirements for land abutting existing agricultural operations/crown land in the ALR, and provisions for retention of natural features along the nonfarm side of the ALR boundaries. The full document will be posted on the CRD website in the near future at www.cariboord.bc.ca under the Planning Department.

Frank also operated a cedar shakes business and was a seasonal fruit and vegetable entrepreneur to help make end’s meet between the hunting and trapping seasons.

Frank was still actively guiding in the area into her sixties and was recently recognized

by the B.C. Guide Outfitter’s Association as holding a guide outfitter’s license longer than anyone else in the history of B.C. -- 56 years. “I was very strong.

Frank states proudly of how she could manage such a physically demanding lifestyle as a woman. “I out-walked everyone in the country.�

Outwitted too it would seem, not only surviving but thriving in what is still mainly considered to be a man’s world today. “You could never let your guard down,�

Frank said of being a guide outfitter to men, noting she could see an

almost instant shift in how the men treated her if she ever hired another guide to hunt as she managed the base camp and cooked.

But Frank had her own way of keeping the men in check by throwing the odd insult out couched in humour.

Frank also learned how to handle a gun and a set of binoculars too, hunting and guiding everything from big game moose, caribou and grizzly bears to goats.

Frank said it was being out in the extreme environment and the challenge of the hunt, not the kill, that would thrill her time and time again.

A creamy garlic chicken receipe that is worth the wait Some time ago, I entered a Canadian Living Magazine cooking contest. I normally don’t enter these types of contests, however I thought I would submit the recipe, then look at the winning recipes to see what it was they did that I didn’t do and perhaps enter again next year with this experience behind me.

I had fun creating this dish. The contest rules state what kind of food you can use to create the recipe. I choose chicken, over the beef alternative, because I had a good idea where I wanted to go with this dish, and nothing came to mind for beef. I have created a similar dish

but hey, grab a book and sit it the kitchen to read and inhale the wonderful aroma from the garlic, wine, butter, and oil as the chicken is cooking...

All of the dishes I cooked, before deciding on this one, used lots of garlic and at least two concoctions had roasted garlic with the chicken. The only downfall of this dish, it does take some time...

Creamy Garlic Chicken with Peppers One whole chicken breast split in half and skinned 10 large cloves of garlic Four Tbsp butter 2 Tbsp Olive oil I cup of white wine 1/4 cup of half-and-half cream One Red and One Green Pepper.

Freshly ground fine black pepper Seasoned sea salt Melt butter in a

heavy cast iron skillet and then add the olive oil. Take the garlic that has been squeezed through a garlic press or cut very fine and add it to the pan. Cook on high heat for three to four minutes to partially caramelize the garlic, then add onequarter cup of the wine and turn heat down to medium for another three minutes. Pepper and salt chicken to taste and put in pan on low heat. Spoon some garlic sauce over the chicken and cook for about forty minutes, with a lid on, and turning once.

Add the cream to the pan with a little more wine and mix together... add thinly sliced green and red pepper, then cook for five minutes on medium heat. Put peppers in the middle of a plate and top with the chicken. Take whatever sauce is left and perhaps add a little more wine or cream, stir, and pour over chicken. This dish has a wonderful creamy garlic taste without being overpowering.
