Around a 100 people took part in this years New Year's Day Polar Bear Swim put on by the Williams Lake Rustlers Rugby Club, last to take the plunge Sunday afternoon were Todd Pritchard, and Morley Wilson. It may have only been a couple degrees below zero but the wind was chilly as the swimmers had to make their way up the beach to the heated change rooms.
Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Williams Lake started 2011 with near record amounts of snow and finished the year up with record breaking warm temperatures. January 2011 saw 75.9 cm of snow, which is the highest amount since 1982 when the lakecity was dumped with 116.8 cm, according to Environment Canada. February and March also saw very high amounts of snow. In fact the amount of snow was so great last winter it wreaked havoc with city workers and prompted the Mayor and Council to adopt a new snow and ice control policy in October. The new policy is supposed to provide more efficient procedures and identify distinct priority areas in the city in the event of a heavy snowfall, such as giving the downtown core top priority. Downtown streets, sidewalks, parking lots, walkways and public transit bus stops are to be cleared within 8-24 hours of a snow event. The unusually wet winter weather and dreary summer weather last year also provided a slow fire season, giving the Cariboo forest region a reprieve from 2010 fires. In stark contrast, just a few weeks ago on Dec. 28 the average high temperature for the day was 7.3 degrees Celsius, which broke the record of 4.5 that was set in 1986. It also seems the warm weather isn’t over yet, with highs expected to reach a balmy 8 degrees today. A high temperature record of 9.2 degrees was set in 1984. Over the last 20 years, January snowfall has fluctuated from just 12.1 cm all the way up to the 75.9 cm the city saw last year, so the next month could see the dry winter weather continue or the town could be buried by February.
