Hospital ER gets provincial cash injection Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Cariboo Memorial Hospital was the backdrop for a government funding announcement of$200,000 yesterday that will help provide a more robust and sustainable 24/7call coverage in the Emergency Room. On behalf of Heath Minster Michael de Jong, Minster of Children and Family

Development, Mary McNeil made the exciting announcement. “It’s very clear to us and we are fully aware of the challenges in recruiting and retaining physicians in rural communities,” said McNeil. “And it’s so important for our families in British Columbia – so this extra financial assistance provid-

ed by the province is going to help address these challenges by helping rural doctors fully cover their local hospital emergency department.” Dr. Glenn Fedor, who is the president of the medical staff at CMH stated the benefits of working in rural B.C but also noted the challenges, which revolve around staffing and he said

this extra funding will help immensely to provide incentive to keep doctors fulltime in emergency. “Years ago I recognized the benefits of practicing in rural area,” said Dr. Glenn Fedor, President of Medical Staff. “I moved here and became part of the community.” He said the extra funding will be used

to add a second oncall position to support the day shifts, as well as funds will be available as increased incentive for overnight coverage for all ER physicians and funds will be dedicated to supporting those who are responsible for the very important job of scheduling ER coverage. The province, in collaboration with

the B.C. Medical Association, put together a program to support physicians and health authorities. The Province announced $10M in July, 2011 to provide financial assistance for rural physicians who commit to ensure reliable public access is maintained at their local hospital and this announcement is a follow up on that commitment.
