Responders impacted by “horrific” crash Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Emergency responders will be attending a critical incident debriefing at the Williams Lake RCMP later this week after a horrific crash on Highway 97 claimed five lives from one family and sent another man to hospital last week.

The accident occurred at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb 9 just north of McLeese Lake when a southbound passenger vehicle crossed into the oncoming northbound lane as it rounded a corner, and right into the path of a transport truck.

The collision claimed the lives of a family from

Prince George; Matt and Leah Altizer, their children Jonathan, 14, and Emily, 12, and the children’s aunt Heather Kress as the family headed to Vancouver to watch a Davis Cup tennis match.

The driver of the truck was treated at Cariboo Memorial Hospital for what were believed to be minor injuries.

“It was a horrific accident,” said Sgt. Bob Verbree with the RCMP Cariboo-Chilcotin Traffic Services.

“When we arrived on scene everything was still on fire and burning ... It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned officer or a rookie, it’s tough for

everyone to be there and work around that.”

RCMP still have not officially released the names of the victims, as they continue to work with the Coroner’s Service to positively identify the victims through DNA and dental records.

Since the accident police have been getting help from the motoring public who travelled the stretch of road at the time of the crash, to help determine a cause.

“We’re fairly confident to say that there were icy patches on the road in that area at the time of the accident,” Verbree said.

Quesnel and Williams Lake RCMP, B.C. Ambulance Service, Wildwood Fire Department, CVSE and the highway maintenance contractor all responded to the accident scene, Verbree said.

A critical incident debriefing is meant to alleviate the trauma felt by workers affected by a traumatic incident such as last week’s accident, by addressing and responding to the emotional and psychological consequences felt by the workers. Verbree said the debriefings are important for the long term well-being of emergency responders.

Around the lake with the RCMP 2012 Feb 09 2012-997 Fatal MVI At 9:30 am Officers responded to a 2 vehicle MVI on the McAllister hill north of McLeese Lake. A southbound SUV crossed over the centre line and struck a northbound tractor-trailer unit. Five persons confirmed deceased in the SUV, the truck driver was unharmed. Traffic Services are investigating the collision.

2012-1015 Missing Snowmobiler RCMP were advised that two males tried to snowmobile into Trio Lake today to go ice fishing. Shortly into the narrow trail the snowmobile got stuck.

One male stayed with the snowmobile and the other continued down the trail to find a location to turn around, this male did not return. The Likely First Responders attended and were able to locate the male unharmed.

2012 Feb 10 2011-1021 Breach At 5:27 am Police received a call from a female about a man down on Hwy. 97 S just next to White Rd. Police attended and located a male on the side of the road. The male was not responsive to the Officers.

EHS attended and took the male to the

hospital.

The investigation revealed the male had consumed alcohol while on conditionoriginating out of Bella Coola not to consume. Charges are being recommended for the breach.

4 curfew checks were conducted all person compliant.

2012 Feb 11 2011-1043 Harass/Obscene Call A female reported that a male had been calling her non stop and said he would take lethal action against her. Caller was satisfied with Officers calling the suspect to tell him to stop calling her.

2011-1057 Road Check RCMP conducted a road check on Westcoast Rd at the Wildwood Refuse site. 10 vehicle were

checked. As a result of this check two 3 day suspension were issued along with one no insurance ticket, two open liquor charges, one drive while prohibited charge and one no seat belt charge.

2012-1065 Ultra light Crash RCMP were notified that a male was flying his Ultra light aircraft near Chimney Lake when he crashed on a small frozen lake.

The male was seriously injured in the crash.

The male was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital. The investigation is being conducted by the Transportation Safety Board.

2012-1084 Breach of Probation RCMP were advised of a male who was at a local drinking establishment trying to buy drugs and start fights.

Officers attended and determined the male was on strict noconsume alcohol conditions. He was arrested for breaching his probation.

Police conducted check of local drinking establishments with no issues arising.

Curfew Checks were conducted of 4 individuals resulting in one breach of probation charge.

2012 Feb 12 2012-1100 B&E South Lakeside A female called the RCMP to report that someone had broken into her residence on South Lakeside Drive sometime between 12:00 pm and 6:45 pm today. Entry was gained through a bedroom window, the suspect (s) stole 10 pairs of size 7 womens jeans. No suspects have surfaced, this file is still under investigation.

A local man is fighting for his life in hospital following an Ultra Lite plane crash Saturday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Rick LeBeuf, the pilot went down on Rosa Lake, near Chimney Lake and the Chimney/Felker Lake Fire Hall.

The pilot was the lone occupant of the plane and was transported to Cariboo Memorial Hospital by vehicle with very serious injuries including burns before being airlifted to hospital in Vancouver where he remains in critical condition.

Laketown Furnishings building featured during Heritage Week Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor When you think of downtown Williams Lake and the different heritage buildings that still exist in the area does Laketown Furnishings on the corner of N. Second Ave and Borland St. cross your mind?

It should. For the past 17 years the building has been filled with furniture, but go back a few more decades to

the 1970’s and it housed the Federal Government Building.

The Sunner family currently owns the 20,000 square foot building where Bob Sunner runs the family business Laketown Furnishings. But before the building was used to house high end furniture, it was home to the Post Office, RCMP Detachment, Department of Indian Affairs and the

Department of Agriculture.

“We’ve kept the carpet from the seventies, and the multi-colour paint job in the doors is from government,” said Sunner.

A little tour of the building, and Sunner will explain how the main floor used to have lots of little offices, on the second floor he would point out where the cells use to be across one of the side walls,

and also explain how the upper floor use to be the RCMP Staff Sergeant’s private quarters.

“He was given a free apartment, but had to answer the phones throughout the night,” said Sunner.

Even though there are couches, stove, washers and dryers throughout the space now – put in evert nook and crannySunner said he still has customers who have memories from when

the building was the government building.

“When customers walk through many have memories of going downstairs to get mail or some customers have memories of being in the cells (upstairs),” said Sunner.

He recalls one client in particular who shared a story about how he would often end up in jail on Friday nights and his family would come throw pebbles at his cell window and he would wave. Sunner said he has a few customers who remember staying in the cells and who refer to the area where the cells were as ‘their

room.’

“Lots of people share different memories – some negative, but many are positive,” said Sunner. “And even the negative ones people value because it shows how much times have change.”

And things have changed, even over the course of Laketown Furniture’s history has been full of changes from location, to different tenets they’ve had in the building.

“Laketown was started by my father in 1971,” said Sunner.

“It started on First Ave and then moved to Oliver, back to a differ-

ent building on First, then Second Ave North, the building where the Legion is now, and then the building on Mackenzie that is now the gymnastic’s club.”

Sunner’s dad first moved to the Cariboo in 1962 after not being able to find work in Victoria. He worked at P &T Saw Mill for six months before someone heard him speak English and offered him a job as a salesman for a store called S&S Stores.

As part of Heritage Week next week, people will be able to tour different historical buildings throughout town. Bob Sunner of Laketown Furnishings will be sharing the history of the building located on the corner of North Second Ave and Borland Street.

He eventually worked his way from outside sales to indoor sales and eventually became the store manger, but the store closed and he was left wondering what to do.

“He was really wondering what to do and my mom said ‘just open your own store,’” said Sunner. “He respond-

ed with ‘we have no money,’ but mom said ‘we have some money, go rent a place and talk to some suppliers to see if they will give you stuff on credit,’” said Sunner.

By the summer of 1971, Sunner’s father’s store was full of mer-

chandise.

Sunner grew up in Williams Lake and

around his dad’s store – he left for a while but came back in 1991 to help his dad with the store.

“My dad had not been feeling well so the store was a little disorganized,” said Sunner. “I worked quite hard getting the store back up to a functioning level.”

During the time he was helping get the store back in order, his dad had bought the old federal government building but wasn’t sure what to do with right away because it needed many renovations.

“There was pressure from the company to utilize the space for selling furniture,” said Sunner. “But the renovations had been dragging on for some time so I found some work boots and worked with the contractors.”

Sunner helped with expanding the front of the store in the show front, and said he had a lot fun working on the roof using a nail gun for

the first time in his life.

“By 1993, the renovations were complete and we moved in some furniture,” said Sunner.

“From the very first day we opened it has been magical – our sales tripled or something like that from where we were before.”

Over the 17 years that Laketown has owned the building, Sunner said they have had some interesting trades for space in the gigantic building. “ A B C Communication, a company that provided internet service rented out a bathroom (on the second floor),” said Sunner. “They put all their equipment and a desk in there.”

He said they needed the antenna and they wanted the cheapest space he would give them.

“I think we traded for some free internet and a little bit of money each month,” said Sunner.

Another interesting tenant in the 1990’s was the Cariboo Advisor who restarted the paper on a stairwell landing in the late ‘90’s.

“He rented the landing and put one desk out there,” said Sunner.

“We traded for a half page ad a week, and each time they expanded we traded for more advertisement.”

He said they rented a small room and expanded a little bit as the paper grew before eventually the paper was sold to Scott Nelson and he moved out Sunner’s building.

“The Cariboo Advisor does have some history here too,” said Sunner.

So as it turns out, the Laketown Furnishings building holds many memories for many different people.

Where’s the fairy tale?

As children, we are read stories at night about princesses and princes who meet, fall in love (in a matter of days), get married and live happily ever after. As we get older we are fed Hollywood’s take on love – grand gestures, messy breakups but it all works out in the end. These are all things that movies make seem real, and give little girls and teenagers high expectations when it comes to romance.

Or at least I think my expectations are high. I use to think it was easy – grow up, meet a handsome man, fall in love (just like that), get married and

live happily ever after.

But it seems the men in movies are nothing like the men in real life or at least the ones I’ve met.

I had a plan for my love life when I was younger, and it involved finding a man who was just like all those leading men in those romantic comedies. I was going to be married at 25, and have kids by the time I was 30, but life doesn’t follow any one timeline – I’ve had to learn to roll with the punches.

Real life (for the most part) isn’t a fairytale or a movie.

There are no grand gestures (I am talking spill-their-guts apologizes, grand central sta-

tion, flash mobs, horse drawn carriages and all that other over the top Hollywood stuff ) it just doesn’t happen like that. I feel lucky when I get an apology at all, let alone any grand gestures.

As the last few years have gone by and I’ve had my taste of romance mixed with a thing called life – I like to think I have become more realistic and less like that little girl I once was waiting for Prince Charming. I’ve learned that love takes work – a lot of work and it doesn’t just happen overnight like the movies will lead you to believe.

may not buy me flowers, cards, or jewelry, but he cleans the house, fixes things when they are broken and takes care of me when I am sick or hurt. So even though I may not have ‘Hollywood’s’ take on Prince Charming, I do have a man that takes care of me and that is what is truly important.

Instead of hoping and wishing for what I don’t have, this Valentine’s Day I was thankful for what I do have.

But hey a girl can dream, and a small part of me will always be waiting for my Prince Charming to sweep me off my feet.

On keeping things clean and tidy Why is it women are obsessed with cleanliness? Carmen always gets uptight when I walk through the house with my muddy boots on, Well, Picky! picky! picky! I always say it was an emergency. It rarely works. “You never notice when I clean up your mess,” she responds.

What mess? She likes to keep things clean and I’m at the top of her list.

“Are you going to clean yourself up?” she asks.

“You kook as bad as you did yesterday only with more beard growth.”

“Oh yeah I responded, but I am trying to cultivate the grizzled old fart look.” “Well its working, you look like a derelict dear.” I relented “Okay I’ll have a bath then.”

I hopped in the tub which was soaking hot, to read ‘Smith and Other Events’ by Paul St. Pierre. For those of you who have read this book there would be I am sure, a mutual agreement. Its an absolute delight. This is part of my campaign to get to know the Cariboo/ Chilcotin. Since I’ve only been here just over a year, I ⁄ don’t count for nothin as a newbie and they tell me you have to live here for forty years to be qualified as a genuine ‘up country’ gent.

Since this will put me over 110, I would say my chances were slim.

Not wanting to get my hands wet while reading, I let the soap marinate in the bath. I buy organic soap, the kind made of oats which turns into oatmeal mush as soon as you put it in water. “Might as well eat it”; says my Carmen that way you can clean yourself from the inside out.”

Now the last person out of bed (that would be me), is obliged to make it that’s the rule around here and fair enough. Mind you if it fails inspection (that would be Carmen), it has to be remade tidy.

So I put a little extra effort into that job.

Before Carmen came along I was a year or two behind in my ironing and my wash always had a slightly pink look to it. In fact I never really ironed much of

anything, preferring the casual wrinkled look.

This of course pegged me as a bachelor wherever Ô I went. “He needs a wife”, they used to say.

Well you can be sure I found a great one in Carmen.

Keeping things clean even applies to our automobiles. Once I drove my new hatchback up to my neighbours Mavis and Don, to pick up their gift of horse manure for my garden. (I know, I know, its got weed seeds in it). Anyway the first thing Mavis says is; “Yer gonna stink up yer car.”

Don on the other hand, being a practical man, opines; “You’re not looking at the upside of this thing Mavis.” ” She gave Don a curious look; “Whassat? Don obliges; “He’s finally getting rid of that new car smell.”

Women can take this cleanliness thing too far. I was working on a script once with Anne Cameron, one of our most distinguished writers and when I called her up on the phone.

She said, “I’ll have to call you back, I’m washing my pig.”

What does it mean clean?‘ Why do we say a ‘clean bill of health’ or ‘clean as a whip’, or they

cleaned him out? Why do we worship clean?

Clean seems to mean, white, im Ímaculate and to be sure, minus dirt.

(Doesn’t matter that we supposedly eat a peck of it during our lifetime.)

To be clean is to be seen without blemish, uncontaminated, pure, free of sin, perfect, owning our right to godliness. Well I don’t buy that old adage that ‘cleanliness is next to godliness. God loves us whether we are clean or not and sometimes when I am dirty am certain I can hear him/ her/it say. “No matter, don’t forget who you are, a son of God.” The light will always shine through if we remember that. Sorry to use the ‘G’ word again, I know its politically incorrect these days, but to be true, call it God, the Great Spirit, Gitchie Manatou, the Divine Being, the Source, or whatever, I always figured that creation implied a Creator. So while not religious, I do believe in a higher power and one which personifies love. You of course can believe what you want, its a free will universe after all. That’s why on occasion, its my choice to be grimy, soiled and somewhat tarnished.

Reward children with good self-regulation A just-fed newborn, rocking in the arms of her loving parent, is warm, full, calm, and safe. Her needs are metfor now. But soon, her body will use all of the food, her mother will put her down, and a loud bang will startle her. When this happens, her body tells her-I'm hungry, alone, and in danger. She feels distress and also feels unable to regulate herself. So dependent, her only response is to cry out, hoping that a responsive adult will come to protect and feed her.

Again and again, attentive parents and teachers respond to the needs of the dependent child. When infants and children are incapable of meeting their own needs, they depend upon the external regulation that comes from attentive, caring adults. It is in the context of this loving attention that a special bond grows between the dependent child and

to experience low levels of "anxiety" or distress when he is in a safe and responsive setting.

Indeed, when the child gets a little hungry, there is no need to cry because he now knows that that feeling will go away soon ("We have snack time after free play").

Moderate, predictable stress in this responsive, controllable environment leads to resilience. Children become capable of tolerating significant distress. In turn, unpredictable or severe stress can lead to a hyper-reactive stressresponse system and a host of problems Healthy self-regulation is related to the capacity to anticipate, read and tolerate the sensations of distress that accompany an unmet need. When a child learns to tolerate some anxiety, he will be much less reactive and impulsive. This allows the child to feel more comfortable and act

more "mature" when faced with the inevitable emotional, social, and cognitive challenges of development. With the capacity to put a moment between a feeling and an action, the child can take time to think, plan, and usually come up with an appropriate response to the current challenge. For example, if you want another turn, wait in line and learn to tolerate the frustration of not getting exactly what you want exactly when you want it.

“There is going to be an opening ceremony with a line-up of local entertainers with the main performer being Don Alder,” said Deb Radolla, who is on the committee planning the event.

Radolla said the event is going to get started at about 4:30 p.m. on March 25 with local entertainers such as Sam Tudor and Robyn Ferguson, the Cariboo Men’s Choir, LeRae Haynes and Cindy Lightfoot. She said there is also going to be drumming by Chief Anne Louie and the Williams Lake Indian Band. All of this will lead up to

As part of the relay, communities across the country chose medal bearers to be part of the relay with Rick and Williams Lake was no exception.

“We had six nomi-

nations from the community,” said Radolla.

“There was a process used to determine the final medal bearer with factors such as the nominees efforts towards removing barriers to make their community fore accessible, has the nominee overcome a disability – really we were looking for an unsung hero,” She said of the final medal bearers, Bruce MacLeod was chosen because all the work he has done in Horsefly, while the other two runner-up medal bearers Kane Fraser and Diana Donnelly both have done a lot to help the community and inspire the youth of the community in different ways.

The event starts at 4:30 p.m. with Hansen and the medal bearer arriving around 5:30 and the event wrapping up around 7 p.m.

Surviving the great outdoors Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Fifteen-year-old girls Holly McKee and Erin Meinema got exactly what they wished for last weekend when they tested their winter survival skills by sleeping in the forest overnight with little more than sleeping bags.

“We were really tired,” admits McKee, who was given the experience as a birthday gift from her dad Jason.

“And what sleep I did get I shouldn’t have because our fire went out at 3 o’clock in the morning ... but it was good.”

The girls and another adult student were all under the watchful eye of their instructor, Sheila Gruenwald, as part of a 24-hour winter survival course.

“They did awesome,” Gruenwald said of the students, who didn’t collect quite enough firewood to last through the below zero night.

“As long as the mistakes are not life threatening, I let them make them. Mistakes can be our best teacher.”

Gruenwald, a volunteer with Central Cariboo Search and Rescue and ZoneTraining Officer for Civil Air Search and Rescue (CASARA) a volunteer branch of the military, has been offering the outdoor survival program for about a year now. Last year Gruenwald won a national contest with CASARA to be apart of winter survival training with Search and Rescue technicians in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta.

“I’ve always been interested in the wilderness end of things,” Gruenwald said of her volunteer work and outdoor-inspired business, Reclaim Personal Development.

“I have a huge passion to help others. It’s very gratifying to bring someone home to their families or to teach others how to survive.”

Gruenwald’s course goes over the psychology of survival and enemies of survival as well as food, First Aid and, of course, building a fire, shelter and signal fire. As part of the course, Gruenwald has students eat only basic dried foods that must be rationed.

“People become very different when they don’t get the foods they’re used to,” she said.

Anyone for a spot of Karate?

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor In an effort to bring something good to the community, newcomer Frank Corbett is looking to open a Tradition Martial Arts Dojo in town.

Just what is a Dojo you ask; well according to Corbett it’s a place where you find the way.

Corbett has been trained in tradition karate since he was 15 years old growing up in the Midlands of England, and he continued when he moved to Canada and the States and when he lived in the Philippines for some time. He is

a senior instructor of Yamamichi Martial Arts International, and has run a Dojo in Mississauga for 15 years when he first moved to Canada.

“I watched lots of students grow – I had many good students,” said Corbett.

He said traditional karate is different from what most people think of as karate these days – there are no trophies or competition, it is just about improving and mastering the techniques for oneself.

“Traditional karate is about a lifetime of self discipline and perfecting one’s character,” said Corbett. “Even older people can still practice

karate for meditation and self discipline.”

Corbett says he feels a Dojo and the practice of traditional values will filter down through all sections of the community.

He said he came to the Cariboo in hopes of putting down roots, and he hopes to help the community with the dojo if he can. He and his wife are trying to start a foundation to help schools in the Philippines since it is too dangerous to live their and try to help, which they learned the hard way when they lived there in 20072009.

“I have seen where Dojo’s have done some

bad areas a lot of good – it takes young people and gives them somewhere to focus their energy,” said Corbett.

He is holding an open house to see if there is enough interest in the community to open the Dojo Feb. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m., Feb. 17 6- 8 p.m. and Feb. 18 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Corbett will be available at his tentative location at 77A N. 2nd Ave to give out information and talk to anyone interested.

Stampeder Update The Williams Lake Stamps started off the second round of Central Interior Hockey League playoffs against the Quesnel Kangaroos over the weekend in Quesnel.

The Stamps will host game two at the Cariboo Memorial Complex Saturday night and if necessary game three Sunday afternoon.

With a win on Saturday, the Stamps will move on to the finals and will be that much closer to the coveted Coy Cup. Game time on Saturday night is 7:30 and if needed the puck will drop at 1:30 for game three.

Men’s Basketball Martin Kruus and members of the Williams Lake Men’s basketball league are organizing a tournament for Feb. 25 and 26 and are looking for teams from anywhere in the region from Prince George to Kamloops to attend.

Registration will be around $250-$300 per team and teams will be guaranteed at least three games. Any excess money will be given back to the top performing teams at the end of the tourney.

“Killer Kara� heads to Provincials Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor With a nickname like Killer Kara, it’s a good thing Kara Pare’s sport of choice is wrestling.

The Grade 10 student just qualified at zones this past weekend to compete in provincials at the end of the month. “I really enjoy throwing people around,� said Pare. “It’s a good outlet for my built up tension.�

Pare only started wrestling last year, and even though she medaled at all her tournaments she missed medaling at zones, which meant she didn’t qualify for Provincials. “This year I medaled at all the tournaments and zones, which is awesome,’ said Pare.

She had two matches and won one and because of the points difference she came third sending her off to provincials Feb. 25 in Penticton where she hopes to place in the top six. “I am hoping to make the top six, but it is only my second year and just going to zones is pretty good.�

Pare practices with the wrestling team in the Nesika gym for two hours, three times

a week. She says it is not an easy sport and there is no room for slacking. “Wrestling comes before everything else for me,� said Pare. “It makes me who I am.�

She says it’s a combination of getting to let out pent up tension and the whole other social side of wrestling that makes her love the sport so dearly. “I find wrestling is my escape from everything else,� said Pare. ‘Without it I wouldn’t be the same.�

Pare says she has made tons of friends in the club, as well as other girls from out of town when she goes to tournaments. “Even though you wrestle by yourself – the team is a like a huge family,� said Pare.

A family that could use some more members, as of late the Williams Lake Wrestling Club has been low on members.

Pare is just one of three girls on the team of seven high school wrestlers, and she said the middle group is who need the most new wrestlers. “The first day is free – just show up and have some fun,�

she says to anyone thinking of joining the club. “The coaches are awesome and are good at making you feel good about yourself,� said Pare. “It’s great for a boost of confidence.�

Pare says she constantly is trying to recruit some friends from Williams Lake Secondary where she is currently the only wrestler to join the club. “Some are too scared to have to wrestle me,� she jokes.

And so they should be, she didn’t get that nickname for nothing. “I think my dad is really proud that his daughter can kick some butt,� said Pare.

She has a younger brother, who for now says she has no problem beating when they wrestle around at home, but she will have to train hard to keep up with him as he soon will tower over the slight framed Pare. “I want to continue wrestling for the rest of high school,� she says, “I am going on an exchange to Australia next year and plan to wrestle when I am there.�
