Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor After 20 years of being told she should be selling her cakes and other sweets, Brenda Taylor finally opened up her bakery ‘Taylor Made Cakes and Desserts’ yesterday, but not without the help of her family.

“My kids agreed that I should open up a bakery, and I needed something to do,” said Taylor, wife of well known radio personality Dale Taylor.

“I took the (start your own business) program at Community Futures last fall.”

Taylor said the program was extremely useful in helping her put together a business plan and giving her the reassurance that it was a viable business.

“My business plan was accepted at the end of November, and we started looking for spaces at the beginning of December.”

It wasn’t until February that the Taylor’s

Along for the ride on opening day was her family who has been instrumental in getting the bakery operational - left to right her son Benn, husband Dale, her dad Don Baxter, sister Janis Sheild and daugher Abbi. found the perfect spot for the bakery, but it did need a lot of work.

Located on Oliver Street next to M&M Meats, Taylor Made Cakes and Desserts has undergone quite the transformation as it previously was home to the antique store.

“We painted, and sanded the floors, stained the floors, and built a dividing wall,” said Taylor. “I am getting sick of painting, I am ready to start baking.”

As of yesterday, the bakery was open for business and the public is now able to take a peak at what has been going on behind the paper-covered windows and taste some of those treats.

“We have cakes, cupcakes, cinnamon buns, giant cookies – which are great because you

can write messages on them to give to someone instead cake,” said Taylor.

Also in those windows are visions of bright pops of colour against fresh white walls.

“Every cupcake store or bakery I went into was always pink – I like pink but I wanted something different,” she said.

“I went with mostly purple with some pink and green – purple has always been my colour.”

Taylor has been working on the baking along side with her daughter Abbi, who has been helping with decorating as well as the names for the different creations.

“To start we will have chocolate, vanilla, black forest and bacon cupcakes,” said Taylor. “The name for the bacon one is ‘Did you say bacon?’ thanks to Abbi.”

wouldn’t have gotten so far on the bakery if it wasn’t for the support of her family. She said her dad helped lots with the renovation along with her son Benn and

Abbi has been helping painting and with the baking.

“We started Feb. 6 with the renovations and it seems like it’s been a long time,” said Taylor.

“I am excited to be open” It wasn’t without some problems along the way – Taylor said there were challenges during the renovation.

“The first time we used the oven it didn’t work – a wire wasn’t connected properly,” she recalls. “And it was a bit tricky getting plumbing and just figuring out what do with the big wide open space.”

One life lost in suspected drunk driving incident Police are investigating whether alcohol was the leading cause in a crash that claimed the life of one woman and left a man in critical condition.

The single vehicle incident took place on Saturday morning, about five kilometres east of the Sheep Creek bridge on Highway 20 and drew an emergency response from witnesses on scene, the RCMP, Central Cariboo Search and Rescue and the BC Ambulance Service, who rushed victims to hospital by ground

and air ambulance.

The mini-van involved was travelling eastbound toward Williams Lake with eight passengers when it left the road and flipped end over end into the ditch.

Road conditions at the time were bare and dry with good visibility.

RCMP received the call for help at 9:45 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing and police have yet to release the names of the victims or what community they were from.

No suspects, but plants seized in pot bust Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor More than 360 marijuana plants plus grow equipment were seized during a police bust on a Big Lake property on the weekend.

Members of the Williams Lake RCMP, North District Integrated Marihuana Enforcement Task Force (NDIME) and the North District General Investigation Section executed a search warrant on the rural property Sunday, and are still trying to hunt down the persons responsible for the grow op.

“There were no suspects located at the West Big Lake property and therefore the investigation is ongoing as police

try to locate the individuals who were tending to the marihuana grow operation,” stated Const. Lesley Smith, North District Media Relations Officer, in a news release.

Smith said the investigation is part of the Marihuana Grow Initiative, the RCMP’s national strategy to combat marihuana grow operations and the organized crime groups running in communities.

Due in part to the organized crime element, the specialized NDIME team was created this year to target rural grow operations.

“It certainly is a welcomed resource to have available,” said Inspector Warren

Brown of the Williams Lake RCMP. “It allows us to work on our strategic initiatives identified by our community members and stakeholders.”

Brown said local members are still involved with NDIME’s activity in the area and are responsible for any drug activity within the city.

Children’s Hospital a Godsend for everyone in BC Many people can keep hospital trips, medical scares, and family emergencies on the down low, but when one person starts talking about their experiences, others begin to share.

That is what the Mahon’s found when they were going through the journey of their son’s treatment for cancer at the Children’s Hospital.

When they started sharing, others started sharing as well – it’s just not something we bring up out of the blue.

I was one of these people who shared

my experience with Children’s Hospital – and as I did we talked about how many in Williams Lake have used the Children’s Hospital and how it really is the hospital for those outside of the Lower Mainland who can’t get their treatment elsewhere.

I shared with the Mahon’s about being diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 13 and had major back surgery before my 14th birthday. I had major back surgery to re-rotate my spine and fuse two titanium rods on either side - it sounds pretty major and it was. It

meant a night in the ICU and a week of physical therapy to get up and walking again.

I am forever grateful to my doctors at the Children’s Hospital for not only completing my difficult surgery without incident, but for the quick care I received and the quality of care I received.

Anyone who has had to use the services of the Children’s Hospital all have nothing but good things to say about the staff, care and facilities. And in the Mahon’s case, they have the Children’s Hospital to thank for their son’s life. No one

should be ashamed to say they had to use the Children’s Hospital, all of us in the Cariboo and around the province are truly lucky to have such a fantastic hospital. We all want to be able to give back and many of us give what we can. The Mahons went beyond and used what resources they could to make a big donation to the Children’s Hospital and from someone who has had to use the hospital, I am truly thankful to people who allow the hospital to continue with their great care for years to come.

There’s no denying spring may finally have sprung Sunday brought us April and along with it spring, real springtime weather or at least that is what we hope for.

The old saying goes ‘April showers bring May flowers.’ Which means as much as we want to think spring

weather is all about the sunshine, we need the rain to make everything beautiful and to wash away the ugliness of winter. If we have to endure a few showers through the month of April so that May can be prettier bring it on

– a little rain never hurt anyone.

Even with a little rain, we can now put away those winter things like boots, shovels, snow tires and big heavy jackets and that is a beautiful thing. Well as least to

some people – there are many winter outdoor enthusiasts who will claim this winter was weak.

Right they may be, spring is sure to be welcomed with open arms whether they are in a t-shirt or rain jacket.

Living backwards can help you find your way forward in life A few moments ago (when I was young), my brothers and I decided that for one week we would try doing everything backwards. So dessert came first, we reverse-walked into every obstacle and rode our bikes facing backwards while sitting on the handlebars. The table was set with dishes upside-down and silverware in contrary positions; Mom was ‘Dad,’ homework was completed in ‘mirror’ writing and the front yard was christened the back yard.

Living out Loud with Rita Corbett scenarios, but it was great fun! Strangers would turn and stare and we would pretend to be normal, whatever that was. Our neighbours were used to our childhood lunacies so ignored the shenanigans. And our parents were wise enough to

allow our creative silliness (no TV in Zaire) to extinguish itself. So why did we stop?

We finally grew up (to one degree or another), and frankly, doing everything backwards complicated our carefree life. It was just too hard! We needed to see where we were going. We had choices to make that couldn’t be made blind. And we had experienced a few too many bad landings!

Sometimes I have suggested that my own growing children try “living backwards!”

Instead of focusing on their immediate likes,

wants or enjoyments, perhaps they could begin with the end in mind, and work backwards towards the present. Even if it is hard sometimes!

A desired career goal then turns into today’s classroom application.

Their preferred social future would determine their choice of friends, and continued health could motivate the sleepy toward their tennis shoes. This backing-up might convert dreams of the future into personal development efforts now. A mother of three professionals quips, “Today’s discipline is tomorrow’s

freedom.”

Everything we do is a step toward something. A spaghetti dinner becomes part of my nutrition. A hasty conversation is a brick in friendship’s wall. Stopping at the drinking fountain becomes part of my long-term health plan, and contemplating the stench of roadside daisies turns a page in my memory album.

Next time we find ourselves caught in the present, being washed indiscriminately into the future, perhaps we could try reversing things briefly. Considering the

desired end and working back might return us to an intentional launch.

Where do I want to be socially in five years - or mentally, spiritually, or physically? Usually when I ask myself that question, one area will jump out and grab me. But perhaps you’re way ahead of me. Kudos to you if your path isn’t just an unplanned float down the river! Because taking ViaRail from Kamloops to Edmonton will never get us to Vancouver, no matter how sincere we are or how long we stay on the train.

Soon I will be

returning home from Hong Kong, China, Thailand, India, and Italy. The specifics of the trip were never part of my plans - they are just places I ended up due to directions chosen years ago - probably when I was still walking backwards. When I return, I will be bringing with me a small item for the first person who sees me and starts walking backwards. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend doing that regularly, but perhaps in planning life, it’s a good place to start. Try “living backwards” then take one forward step at a time.

I suggest we support the New Prosperity mine because of the obvious contributions it makes to the economy of our area.

Brian Battison, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for Gibraltar Mines told a sold out Chamber of Commerce crowd they were stunned when the Government did not

allow Prosperity mine.

We invested heavily in the effort, not only through their treasury, but with their hearts.

Many people felt abandoned and betrayed.

He said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;saving Fish Lake would add 300 million dollars to the project, bringing total capital costs for New Prosperity to the billion dollar mark.

Now that Fish Lake will be saved, he and many others expect positive results from the Feds.

Federal Budget What did you think about the Federal budget? Some people in Williams Lake thought the MoneySense magazine statistics showing our community as one of the worst places to live in Canada was a

sham.

Those folks, councillors, and others suggested that Williams Lake people like this community because of family and friends and the outdoors opportunities. They say that Williams Lake is a good place to live... they are all right.

The article in the magazine may not change the attitudes of those who live here, but it may change the thoughts of someone moving here or building a business. Whenever a city like Williams Lake is trying to attract business as part of itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s economic development, it does not do the city any good to have such ratings. I would not like to be our economic development officer, trying to explain to a

Builders give back to Children’s Hospital Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Steve Mahon of Macon Construction and his wife Karen are giving back to Children’s Hospital best way they know how – building houses.

“Steve came up with the idea of building a house spending as little money as we could and donate the profits of the sale to the hospital,” said Karen. “We are donating $80,090.12 thanks to the generous donations from people in the community.”

The Mahon’s feel they owe it to give back to the hospital after their son Gregorson was diagnosed with stage four germ cell tumors in April 2010 at 15 years old.

Gregorson underwent multiple chemo treatments and surgeries at the hospital and is now in remission.

“We owe his life to the Children’s Hospital and the care he received there,” said his dad.

The Mahon’s, Steve, Gregorson, and Karen, organized the building of this house at 122 eagle Crescent and are donating the profits of $80,090.12 to the Children’s Hospital.

Gregorson received wonderful care at the Children's Hospital during his treatment for cancer and the Mahon’s wanted to give back.

Eagle Crescent in the Westridge subdivision and was only made possible by the generosity of trades people in the community, according to the Mahon’s.

“Everyone donated what they could,” said Steve. “We wanted everyone to cover their costs – we didn’t want anyone going broke.”

Steve said some busi-

ness even went above and beyond to their suppliers to see what discounts they could get.

“It was such an easy fundraiser – everyone said yes,” said Karen.

The Mahons said that any of the money donated could be specified to a specific department at the hospital.

“What we found after

Gregorson had to go the Children’s Hospital is how many friends and people we know have used the hospital,” said Steve, “You don’t know until you yourselves are in the same situation.”

Gregorson, who is now 17, still has to make a trip down to the Children’s Hospital every six months for check ups and his par-

ents are happy they have been able to give back to the hospital in such a big way.

The house they built sold during construction, and the Mahons are very thankful to Lyla Floberg for purchasing it. “(Gregorson) is going to present the check in June during the Miracle Weekend,” said Karen.

“The total emphasis is give girls the opportunity to try hockey and borrow equipment and see if they like the equipment,” said Call, who is the female coordinator for Williams

Lake Minor Hockey.

Call said they had a range of girls from age five to 45 out on the ice along with two girls currently registered in hockey and two coaches.

“It’s all about pressure free time out on the ice, to skate with the equipment,” said Call. “Hockey can be an expensive sport so it’s nice to give them a chance to try it out.”

Karen Chabot is a hockey mom and she said the whole idea behind the event is to really promote girls

hockey and to give them a chance to get their feet wet without a big commitment from the parents.

Be more than a bystander Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Macho men standing up against violence against women – that’s the idea behind the B.C. Lions ‘Be more than a Bystander’ school presentations.

The tour of schools across the province is in Williams Lake this week and students at Williams Lake Secondary were treated to B.C. Lion players Angus Reid and Travis Lulay, who delivered the message to do something when you see something that is wrong.

“You don’t need super powers to be a leader,” said Reid during the presentation. “It’s not always easy and it does take courage.”

Reid and Lulay said they both jumped at the chance of being positive male role models and to help break the cycle of violence against women.

The presentation included the guys sharing personal stories, and giving options of what the students can do when they see something that is wrong.

“Nothing stops until you

stop being just a bystander,” Reid told the students.

“We’re not here to tell you what to do – we’re here to tell you to do something.”

Lulay said he went over some of the stats that startled him when going through training.

“Looking at these numbers there is no denying there is a problem,” said Lulay.

“It’s always been thought of as a women’s problem but it’s everyone’s problem.”

Grade 12 student Dustin Johnston said the presentation had a good point.

“Macho guys talking about violence against women is a good way to get the point across,” said Johnston. “It definitely made me think.”

After the presentation to the whole school, Lulay and Reid met with WLSS’s Go To Team and went over a scenario and lead a discussion about options people have.

“I think it’s awesome (that WL has the Go To Team),” said Lulay. “These guys are already leaders among their peer group, which is exactly

what we’re talking about – stepping up and being a leader.”

The group had the chance to discuss ideas about why people would just be a bystander, why they would choose not to, and the options they have. “(This session and information) built on my previous training,” said Go To Team member Rob Pederson. “They really make you realize how prominent violence against women is in our society.”

Reid and Lulay will also be making stops at elementary schools on their tour in the lakecity as well as Columneetza on Wednesday.

Travel tips for a safe and successful road trip A good road trip can be the ultimate spring or summer experience.

With the open road ahead, life’s troubles seem to melt and there’s just the oneness of the driver and the road.

For a road trip to be successful, it’s not just a matter of taking to the road and putting the pedal to the metal.

There are a host of considerations to make, which can ensure safety and peace of mind when

beginning your excursion. The hot sun that can bake the roadway -- and your body -- can also take its toll on your car, contributing to breakdowns. And there are other factors to be aware of.

Maintenance should never be overlooked when it comes to prepping for a road trip. At the least, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that drivers

have their tires, battery, belts, fluids, and air conditioner checked by a qualified mechanic prior to starting any long trip. But the list does not stop there. There are many other precautions to heed before taking to the road. * Be sure to have all necessary documents on hand. Nothing can stall a road trip faster than getting pulled over by a police officer and being without your license,

On road trips, bring along a friend so that you can share driving responsibilities and fend off fatigue. registration and proof of insurance. These are required documents to operate a vehicle, and it’s definitely worth a second check in your wallet and glove compartment to be sure they are where they should be. * Get an oil change.

Driving long intervals can be taxing on a car engine, as can the start-and-stops associated with getting stuck in road trip traffic. Do yourself and your car a favor by getting an oil change to ensure there will be proper lubrication of the engine and that thick, old motor oil won’t contribute to a breakdown. * Update your GPS. If you will be using a GPS device as your primary tool for navigation, update the device’s maps before departure.

Roadways are always being changed, and without downloading the proper updates, you

could end up driving in circles instead of moving on to your destination.

In addition, many GPS models come equipped with pinpointing points of interest, or POI, such as restaurants, tourist areas, hotels, and rest stops, which should be update before beginning the trip. Follow the guidelines spelled out in the owner’s manual that comes with your GPS unit. Consumer Reports also advises knowing the local ordinances regarding GPS use. For example, a windshieldmounted unit is not allowed while driving in Minnesota. * Plan who will drive when. A long road trip -- one that will be done primarily in one day -could necessitate splitting up the trip between two or more drivers. Not only does this banish boredom, it also reduces the risk of driver fatigue.

The weather and the position of the sun could change depending on where you are driving.

If you wear glasses or contacts for driving, be sure you have them with you. Keep a few pairs of sunglasses in your car to shield your eyes from sun glare. If the sun proves problematic, pull over for a little while or try an alternate route that prevents oncoming sun on the windshield.

While you are packing sunglasses, also be sure to bring along -- and wear -- sunscreen, as the sun’s rays can be magnified through the window glass. * Bring along refreshments. Frequent stops for bathroom breaks and simply to stretch your legs are adviseable,

but limit rest-stop fare whenever possible. Not only do these foods tend to be unhealthy, they are often expensive. Keep your road trip budget down by packing healthy food and drinks that you can enjoy on the go. * Keep on top of your car’s fuel level. Play it safe when gassing up the car. On rural roads or stretches of country with which you are unfamiliar, you never know how far away filling stations might be from one another. That means you should take the opportunity to top off the gas tank whenever you get the chance.

This way you always will be confident you have enough gas to get to the next station. Don’t risk coasting into your destination on fumes, unless you want to arrive at your destination hitched to a tow truck. * Be wary of hitchhikers. Although hitchhikers are few and far between nowadays, there is still the possibility of coming across someone thumbing for a ride on the side of the road. Do not pick up a stranger who is hitchhiking, no matter how reputable the person may seem. If you come across someone who has broken down, offer to call for help instead of allowing the person into the car.

Road trips seem to be an essential part of the spring and summer season. They can be all the more fun and safe when you heed a few road trip rules of the road.

FOR SOMETHING SPECIAL? A windshield crack is something that should be remedied soon.

The scenario is all too common. Drivers are traveling down the road, and a pebble gets kicked up and hits into their windshield, causing a small chip to appear. Slowly but surely that chip turns into a spreading, snaking crack that only gets worse with each bump and pothole.

Having a broken windshield is not only unsightly and a big inconvenience, it can also be illegal. That’s because the crack reduces the efficacy of the window safety composition, meaning it may

shatter in the event of an impact accident and cause extensive injuries.

The crack also may impede a driver’s ability to see the road clearly.

It’s important to note that liability car insurance typically doesn’t cover a cracked windshield that occurs in a collision. Instead, drivers hoping to be covered need to have collision insurance on their vehicle. However, not all windshields crack in a car accident.

Many are damaged in nonaccident related circumstances, whether this be a tree branch

that falls on the car or a rock kicked up from the roadway. It’s important to read an insurance policy thoroughly to be sure that nonaccident related cracks to the windshield will be covered.

Even if the damage is covered, it may not be worth the expense of paying the insurance deductible and filing a claim, which may end up raising your rate in the long run.

Many small nicks can be repaired easily with a kit purchased from an automotive supply store. Inexpensive

and user-friendly, the instructions guide users through the process of sealing the crack and preventing it from spreading.

If the crack is beyond the scope of a do-it-yourself fix, a windshield repair service that specializes in this type of work might be necessary. These companies use products that harden quickly and reglaze the windshield so that the crack may not even be noticeable afterward.

CRD to host invasive plant workshop in May The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) Invasive Plant Management (IPM) Program will be hosting the Weeds and the Works Workshop on Thursday, May 3, from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm.

Through the IPM program,

the CRD assists area landowners, farmers and ranchers tackle invasive plant problems.

The session will cover herbicide physiology and product information, aerial applications, safe handling and usage of herbicides,

the importance of calibration, and a hands-on demonstration of spray equipment calibration.

Demonstrations of backpack, truck mounted and ATV mounted sprayers will be part of the practical session. A tractor boom

sprayer will be on display during the workshop to show proper calibration techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring their spray equipment if they would like some professional calibration assistance.
