Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Mourners gathered at an impromptu memorial site this week at the bottom of Carson Drive to grief the loss of a 20-year-old nursing student who was struck down by a suspected drunk driver in the early morning hours Sunday.

described by her teachers as a bright and happy student, died at the accident scene just after 2 a.m. while her friend, a 19-yearold fellow nursing student whose named has not yet been released by police, was also critically injured and transferred to hospital in Vancouver where she remains.

The girls were walking with a large group of friends on the north side of Carson Drive when they saw another group of friends on the south side.

According to the RCMP, as many as 30 people from the two groups witnessed an older model small pick-up truck strike the pedestrians and flee the scene.

RCMP and the Williams Lake Fire Department responded to a crash on the corner of Western Avenue and Huston Street. A blue Jeep Liberty collided with a power pole causing severe damage to the pole and the front of the vehicle. A hitchhiker has been taken to Kamloops hospital with a suspected broken arm and possible broken hip after he was ran over Saturday night night. Williams Lake RCMP responded to a complaint of a single vehicle collision on Highway 20 near Westridge Drive at 8:12 p.m. The caller stated that a male had been hit by a truck and was lying on the roadway.

Officers attended the scene with ambulance staff. Officers learned that the driver of the vehicle was the person who had called the police. The driver had attempted to pick up a male known to him that was hitch

hiking on the side of the road. An argument ensued which lead to this person becoming aggressive and hitting the side of the vehicle.

The male ran beside the vehicle when the driver attempted to leave. The male was run over by the vehicle. No charges are anticipated at this time.

Funeral services for Rayel MacDonald are scheduled for this Saturday at 1 p.m. at Williams Lake Senior Secondary, where MacDonald graduated from in 2010 and not far from the site of the tragedy that claimed her life.

Landslide destroys city pipes Critical components of the City’s infrastructure were destroyed in a landslide in the River Valley adjacent to the Williams Lake solid waste transfer station earlier this month.

The City made the announcement more than a week after they discovered that some-

time between April 10 or 11 a large section of the treatment water outfall from the Capital Power plant and a storm outfall pipe were destroyed.

Apparently plant operations were not affected and there was no danger to the public as a result of the slide.

The City stated it notified the Ministry of Environment and Department of Fisheries and Oceans of the incident.

The City stated it completed emergency works April 17 to divert the storm flow that was flowing through the slide and dumping silt

into the creek.

The news release was issued to the public on the matter after work was completed, April 18.

The City stated they expect significant financial impacts as a result of the damage, adding the public will be updated as developments unfold.

The City says it was a business decision that lead them to settle a human rights complaint from their former Director of Finance with a $15,000 payout.

According to a City press release, officials from the city and complainant Candie Laporte agreed to attend mediation with the Tribunal January 24 “to see if there was a way to resolves this complaint without proceeding any further with the complaint.”

Last year Laporte alleged discrimination on the basis of sex in respect to wages.

“The resulting settlement was an economic and practical resolution of the complaint and it did not constitute any wrongdoing, liability, blame or lack of confidence in the merits of its case by the City,” states the City.

The City went on to state it felt it was more responsible to the taxpayers to resolve the complaint “even though the City was confident the complaint would be dismissed.”

In return for the payment of $15,000, Laporte agreed to withdraw her complaint and release the City from any further claims or actions.

Community Gardens & Cariboo Growers Tatjana Bates, Community Dietician, Interior Health, Promotion and Prevention, Community Integrated Health Services, appeared before the Board to discuss community gardens and the Cariboo Growers food co-op. The presentation included information about the Williams Lake Food Action Plan which was developed by the local Food Policy Council, the benefits of the program to the community, and local food strategies.

Feasibility Funds Endorsed The Cariboo Regional District received a request from the West Chilcotin Search and Rescue Association (WCSAR), which outlines what the group does and

requests a permanent source of funding through regional district taxation.

A total of up to $3,000 in feasibility funds will be allocated to explore this opportunity for Electoral Area J residents.

Funding for First Nations Consultation The Cariboo Regional District will be resubmitting a resolution originally proposed to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM) in 2009. The resolution dealt specifically with funding for First Nations Consultation, as the process can be expensive and time consuming for both First Nations and local governments. If successful, this funding would be used to help offset costs of this consultation process.

STUDENTS: 30 Hour Famine

“I was looking through a list of scholarships and found this one,” she said. “It’s given me the chance to lead the 30-hour famine at my school.”

“When I was 15, my family spent a year living in South America – we helped build houses, and schools and volunteered at schools,” she said. “I really want to be able to help people who need it.”

The money raised through the 30-hour famine event she is organizing will be sent to the countries in the Horn of Africa, as well as money raised through another event the Columneetza leadership team is organizing for the same day.

“We call it ‘Pay to Play’ – students have to bring in as much change as they can and for as long as it takes their teacher to roll it all they have free time,” said Tucker. “All that money also goes to the same place as the pledges for the 30-hour famine.”

BC Teachers withdrawal volunteer time Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor The B.C. Teacher’s Federation voted decisively last week to revoke their volunteer time with 73 per cent voting yes.

“This is not a decision teachers take lightly,” said Cariboo-Chilcotin teacher’s Association president Joan Erb. With this vote, students are directly affected such as sports, clubs, year-end drama productions and even graduating ceremonies are

threatened.

“Teachers in Williams Lake volunteer for a number of things,” said Erb. .”

Erb did say that if teachers chose not to respect the decision of the union and continue volunteering their time there will be no punishment from the union.

“There might be some animosity between members if one chooses to respect the vote and another does not,” she said. “But I would hope

that the members can all respect each other.”

Erb did say graduation ceremonies in

Williams Lake would not be affected; they would go on just without teacher involvement.

Youth and innocence lost in tragic accident Last Sunday morning started as many early spring days do; full of hope and promise and renewal.

Joggers could be seen getting in early runs as robins sang their song of happy returns, groups of mountain bikers headed out on the forest trails and families prepared their children for church services.

Sadly, for several families and friends their Sunday would

have already turned into Hell on earth hours earlier because of a tragedy Saturday night that claimed the life 20-yearold nursing student Rayel MacDonald, left another 19-year-old nursing student fighting for her life and 28-yearold Martin Gentles facing charges of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm.

The events have left the whole community mourning. Whether

you knew the girls or not, you know what they represent - hope, youth and innocence lost.

One can only be left to wonder why these terrible things happen.

How could the lives of these innocent victims and alleged offender be timed so perfectly to intersect, causing such a devastating outcome for all and for what purpose? Why did they have to meet? I suppose

we can only look on our faith for those answers.

In reality, we have lost a beautiful young woman at the start of her life, someone who chose to work in a career with its sole purpose to help others.

Our hearts go out to Rayel’s mom Andrea MacDonald and her family as they begin to grieve the loss of such a special person under such difficult circumstances.

The volunteer vote The B.C. Teachers Federation voted decisively last week to revoke all of their volunteer time in response to being backed up against the wall by government.

But this leads to the question of whether or not this action does what they intend by sending a message to their employer, the government, or does it just hurt students?

The students will now miss out on sports, clubs, drama, and most of all, the possibility of no graduating ceremony.

They say students

here in town will still have a graduation ceremony – it will just lack the presence of their teachers who have seen them through to their success.

I remember my graduation and the words of congratulations from my teachers as I shook their hand and walked across the stage. But this year students may not have that opportunity – and we can only hope that the lack of teacher presence will send the message they intend it to and isn’t a waste of time and damaging to the students.

Of course there are the teachers out there who did not vote to revoke their volunteer time and will continue to do what they do because it’s what is best for the students.

I wonder if teachers will be able to respect one other’s decision to pull back on extra curricular activities or not.

It’s a tough situation to be in, to support your professions and issues you believe in or to continue to offer support for the students in the form of extra curricular activities?

I don’t envy teachers, but can respect their decisions which ever they as long as I know they are putting students first and foremost.

If teachers care about the students as much as they say they do, I hope they use god judgment in choosing which activities they deem to be ‘volunteer’ and which they will continue to provide.

Here’s to hoping that this conflict can be resolved and teachers can go back to giving the students their undivided attention in and out of the classroom.

A good wife and a good talking to keeps life on track People often tell me I am too intellectual, that I live in my head too much. Well that’s a lot of malarkey. Mind you, it sure set me thinking!

Are we just body and mind or is there more? Eckhart Tolle claims; “Thinking is no more than a tiny aspect of the totality of consciousness, the totality of who we are.” So who is running the show here? It has been said; “we are not a physical being having a spiritual experience, we are a spiritual being having a physical experience.”

Who is this spiritual

being? The soul or sometimes termed, ‘Higher Self.’ Could this be our “Guardian Angel?” If we tune in to that ‘still small voice within,’ the soul body, we are apt to see that

we are more than our thoughts and emotions. I often convene with this greater Self for help and guidance.

Usually wise counsel comes through, whether we obey it or not.

And I admit that sometimes I talk to myself. This helps with needful self-reckoning.

At least I’m a good listener, and I’m always in good company. “What have you got yourself into now Bob?” “Wouldn’t it have been better to think this through?” “No, I’m trying to de-intellectualize myself here.” We may have to admit that

a good ‘talking to’ self, is sometimes necessary.

I for one believe that facing oneself in the mirror, eyeball to eyeball is a healthy exercise. Though, after a moment of this mirror therapy, I usually crack up. I just can’t take myself that seriously.

But then seriously folks, when do we take a proper accounting of ourselves? Well here is where a good wife comes in.

There are times Carmen believes I have lost my mind. (I guess that’s why she feels it necessary, to give me a piece of hers now and

then.) Thankful that I am, it does me no good to pursue objectives that run contrary to popular opinion, usually Carmen’s. Maverick that I am, I do it anyway and if it is pointed out to me my errant ways, well I’m honest enough to admit that I might be wrong. If I recall correctly, I have been wrong before.

(On the rare occasion of course.) Yes, there are times when I have made a mess of things.

The only way out is to forge along anyway, which I do with great masochistic fervor. While Carmen of

course, feels I should quit while I am still ahead.

I tell Carmen that sometimes things go well, sometimes they don’t. That’s life.

Remember Murphy’s famous dictum; “Anything that can go wrong, will.”

Now as far as my shenanigans are concerned, Carmen offers, that Murphy was probably an optimist. All this comes back to the ‘good wife’ scenario.

Telling oneself that maybe a second opinion might be worthy of consideration, even if it goes against intend-

ed plans, helps keep me out of trouble.

“Although perhaps, not often enough;” opines you know who.

Now those of you who may have followed this regular column, no doubt have come to realize that my dear wife is the voice of common sense in this relationship. On the other hand, I am the one too often called; a ‘Space Cadet’. Okay so be it. It takes all kinds right? What would we do without the dreamers of this world, our artists, poets and creators? Be a lot better off? I don’t think so.

by Sealin Creek, sold for $10,400 to Fleury Cattle Co. & Saskatla Farmers Ltd. Organizers of the show and sale said the average price for Angus bulls was $3,44.51 and a total of 57 were sold.

The top selling Hereford bull was owned by Deanfield Ranch and sold for $6,400.

A total of 37 Hereford bulls were sold at an average price of $3,316.22.

Teachers say no to volunteering for the students sake?

Not too many years ago when teachers interviewed for a job it was suggested to them that extracurricular activities would be important to their being employed. In most cases extracurricular meant volunteering to take on the students ball team or perhaps be a drama coach for the schools winter play and maybe donating their time to help with the prom.

Why don’t they call it volunteering like it really is?

The five big backyard excuses NC)—As a landscape designer, I've seen it all – from barren wastelands to overgrown, untamed jungles. For most homeowners, it seems that backyards are foreign, intimidating places.

Many people feel that they can't make changes so the backyard stays the same, year after year.

Here are my five favourite excuses that people use when stuck in a gardening 'rut': 1. “If I replace my lawn with gardens, I will have to spend more time in the backyard working.” This statement is completely false. The truth is, grass requires more maintenance than any alternative material. A well– planned garden uses less water and requires

less weekly attention than the average lawn.

The key is to have a garden that works in your location. A little research cultivates years of reward. Get your camera and take some pictures of what grows well in a neighbour's yard. That's always a great place to start.

2. “I have a large tree and nothing grows under it.” This really isn't a challenge; it's an opportunity to transform the garden into an inviting spot that draws people into the cooling comfort of a shady tree on a hot day. This can be created simply by working with the roots of the tree instead of trying to compete with them. Plan the garden in the area between the roots and think of

them as the framework for designing the space.

Using shade–loving plants sometimes isn't enough, as they have to compete with the tree for water and nourishment. Instead, plant shrubs and perennials inside a larger pot in the ground, which gives them the chance to get established.

3. “It's going to be expensive to make big changes.” It's true.

Landscaping is never cheap if done properly, but there are a few things that should be considered. A well– designed outdoor space holds its value when it comes to resale. Also, no one ever said that you had to make all the changes at once.

Hiking a sweet passion Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor This weekend Kim Kaytor is using her skills and knowledge of the outdoors to lead a hike called ‘Hiking and Chocolate,’ offered through Leisure Services.

Because of her love of the outdoors and outdoor activities, Kaytor spends as much time in nature as she can, and says one of those ways is by hiking the local trails.

The hike that she will be leading this weekend, will lead to a rock bluff overlooking the Fraser River looking west to the Chilcotin. Kaytor said she saw the rock bluff and decided to find her way there.

“I went exploring – and it’s a passion of mine to share my love of nature with others,” she said.

“On the coast it was all about hiking to find a view – it’s a bit harder here but there are great views, especially from this rock bluff.”

The hike will take an hour to get to the rock bluff and then the group will have a gourmet lunch complete with chocolate.

“When the idea of combining chocolate with a hike came up, I was all for it,” said Kaytor. “The hike will lead through a mature Douglas Fir forest, and end with an awesome view.”

Those interested in participating in the hike can call the Cariboo Memorial Complex at 250-392-7665 to register, the cost is $49.

Kaytor says good shoes with ankle support are required, as well as water and a pack for the lunch.

10 fundamental tips you don’t want to skip Some impor tant car care tips from the BC Automobile Association.

1. Tire Pressure

WHY: Over-inflated tires ride roughly and suffer premature wear at the center of their tread. Under-inflated tires decrease fuel economy, cause imprecise handling, suffer premature wear at the edges of their tread, and can overheat and fail at highway speeds.

WHEN: Check the tire pressures (including the spare) at least once a month when the tires are cold. Always follow the inflation pressure recommendations in your owner’s manual, or those on the tire information label that is located in the glove box or on the driver’s door jamb. Do not use the inflation pressure molded into the tire sidewall; this is the pressure needed to achieve the tire’s rated

load capacity, and it may or may not be the correct pressure for your particular car.

BOTTOM LINE: The correct tire pressure will make tires last longer and delay the need for you to buy new ones.

Plus, having the proper tire pressure will help your vehicle’s fuel economy.

2. Engine Air Filter

WHY: Your vehicle’s air filter prevents dust

and dirt from entering the engine. A dirty or clogged air filter restricts airflow and will reduce engine performance and fuel economy while increasing exhaust emission levels.

WHEN: Check the air filter every six months or 7,500 miles. Typically, your repair shop will inspect the filter at each oil change. You can check it by holding it up to a 60-watt light bulb. If you can see light through much of the filter, it is still clean enough to work effectively. However, if the light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it.

BOTTOM LINE: Dirty air filters not only affect your fuel economy, but other vehicle systems such as the emissions control system and spark plugs. It might result with problems keeping your car running.

3. Battery Cables/Clamps/ Terminals

WHY: Power from the battery flows to the rest of your vehicle’s electrical system through the cables, clamps and terminals. If these components and connections become corroded or loose, your car won’t have the power needed to start the engine and operate other systems.

WHEN: The battery cables, clamps and connections should be inspected at every oil change. If there are signs of corrosion, or you notice other indications of electrical

problems such as slow engine cranking or dimming headlights at idle, have your repair shop test the charging and starting system, and clean and tighten the battery connections as necessary.

BOTTOM LINE: No one enjoys walking into a parking lot to discover their car suddenly won’t start. Keeping the battery maintained will greatly reduce the risk of it going dead and help extend its life.

4. Windshield Washer Fluid

WHY: Rain, insects, grime and other debris on your windshield will compromise your vision if your windshield wipers cannot remove them.

WHEN: Check your washer fluid reservoir monthly and more often when you use the washers frequently.

Top it up with a washer solution formulated to aid in the removal of insects and other debris, and during winter, be sure to use a solution with antifreeze protection. Finally, test the washer spray nozzles for proper operation and aim.

BOTTOM LINE: Whether your windshield becomes covered with bugs in the summer or ice and salt in the winter, it’s critical to keep it clear for your safety.

5. Engine Oil

WHY: Without an adequate supply of clean oil, your engine will wear more rapidly and could even seize

and be destroyed. Oil doesn’t freeze like water, but its viscosity, or thickness, does increase as the mercury drops. Lighter grade oils reduce the load on your car’s battery and starter, allowing more rapid cranking and starting. WHEN: Change your engine’s oil and oil filter at the specified intervals, and follow the more frequent “severe service” recommendations if your driving habits meet any of the conditions described in your owner’s manual.

Always use the weight of oil recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer for the existing temperature conditions. Watch for oil leaks beneath your vehicle and have any leaks corrected.

BOTTOM LINE: Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. Not maintaining the proper levels, using the wrong oil or not changing it frequently enough can destroy your engine.

Plus, oil that leaks on to a heated surface can cause a vehicle fire.

6. Windshield Wiper Blades

WHY: Windshield wipers are easy to overlook until you find yourself in a pounding rainstorm.

If your wiper blades are worn, cracked or rigid with age, the wipers will not adequately remove rain, grime and other debris that can obscure your vision.

WHEN: Check your car’s wiper blades at each oil change or whenever they fail to wipe the

glass clean in a single swipe. Streaking and chattering are common clues that the rubber is breaking down and replacement is needed.

BOTTOM LINE: Worn out windshield wipers can not only compromise your safety when you need them, they can even damage your windshield.

7. Antifreeze/ Coolant Protection

WHY: The primary task of an engine coolant is to transfer heat from the engine to the radiator where it is removed by the passing airflow. Modern engine coolants also prevent the cooling system from freezing or boiling, rust and corrosion and lubricate the water pump seals and other cooling system components.

WHEN: Check the coolant level at every oil change. With a cold engine, the radiator should be completely full and the coolant level in the remote reservoir should be at or above the “cold” level marking. Have the system flushed and refilled with fresh coolant at the interval specified in your vehicle owner’s manual. This can vary widely, from every two years to more than 100,000 miles, depending on the coolant type used. Simple and inexpensive testers are available to check the coolant’s level of antifreeze pro-

Auto care tips: Beware of rust breakouts this spring

(NC)—The signs of spring are everywhere. The flowers are starting to bloom, the grass is greener and the temperature is rising with the warm glow of the sun.

Unfortunately, another rite of spring is also upon us – the attack of corrosion on our vehicles.

According to experts, with warmer temperatures comes the dreaded eyesore of vehicle corrosion.

“It's a popular misconception that winter is the harshest season for vehicles due to snow and salted road conditions,” explained Freeman Young, president of Krown Rust Control.

“While salt will accelerate the corrosion process, it's actually the humidity and moisture that will cause rust to appear on a vehicle. Increasingly warm temperatures have a major impact on corrosion as well, that's why spring and summer are in fact the harshest seasons.”

According to the Canadian A u t o m o b i l e Association (CAA), the best way to keep rust from eating away at your car is to protect it annually with an application of an oil–based rust inhibitor.

“We would recommend an applica-

tection. Always top up the system with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water to avoid altering the antifreeze level. Be aware that some coolants come pre-mixed with water and others do not.

Some manufacturers require the use of specific coolant types.

Check your owners’ manual for the coolant your vehicle needs.

BOTTOM LINE: Maintain the antifreeze/coolant to avoid overheating in the summer or freezing in the winter — both of which can result in costly damage to your car.

8. Tire Tread

WHY: The four points where the rubber meets the road are the only things that stand between you and an accident. In wet or snowy road conditions, having good tires with sufficient tread depth is crucial. Worn tires with inadequate tread are much more likely to hydroplane on wet pavement or lose traction in the snow, resulting in a loss of braking power and steering control.

WHEN: Check the tread depth of your car’s tires whenever it appears low. Insert a penny upside down into a tire groove. If you can see above the Queen’s crown at any point, you have less than 3/32” tread, and you should replace the tire. Uneven or excessive wear of the tire tread may indicate the need for suspension repair or wheel align-

ment, both of which will extend the life of your tires. (Note you’ll need to use the older pennies; the newer pennies portray Queen Elizabeth without her crown.)

BOTTOM LINE: Driving a vehicle with low tread depth puts you at serious risk for a crash. To slow the wear on your tires, be sure to take care of suspension repairs or wheel alignments as needed.

9. Drive Belt Tensioner

WHY: One or more rubber drive belts transfer the rotation of the engine’s crankshaft to various accessories that help your vehicle function properly. Belts that are too loose will allow slippage and reduce efficiency. Belts that are too tight can damage bearings and cause premature component failure.

WHEN: Drive belt condition and tension should be checked at every oil change. Many cars today have automatic belt tensioners that require no maintenance. On others, technicians must use a belt tension gauge to check and adjust the tension manually. To prevent being stranded by a broken accessory drive belt, have your car’s belts replaced every four years or 60,000 miles.

BOTTOM LINE: If a belt comes loose or breaks, it can cause major damage to your engine.

10. Brake Fluid

WHY: The fluid in your car’s brake hydraulic system transfers your foot pressure at the brake pedal into stopping power at the wheels. An adequate supply of clean brake fluid is absolutely essential for safe vehicle operation. Old, moisture-contaminated brake fluid, or a low fluid level that allows air to enter the system, can lead to brake fade or a complete loss of braking power.

WHEN: Inspect the brake fluid level at every oil change. If the level has fallen below the “low” mark on the fluid reservoir, it usually indicates major brake wear or a leak somewhere in the system; have the brakes inspected as soon as possible. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend that the brake fluid be replaced periodically to flush moisture and contaminants from the system. Every two years is a common interval; check your vehicle owner’s manual for specific recommendations.

BOTTOM LINE: Old brake fluid or fluid at low levels can result in your brakes fading or completely failing.

Plus, a leak in the brake line can cause a vehicle fire if the fluid drips onto a heated surface such as a catalytic converter.
