Moose numbers are low Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The number are in, and they’re not looking good. After being pressed for the outcomes of the moose population studies from the last two years, sources within the ministry confirmed yesterday moose numbers are down. Just how low and how far reaching those reduced numbers are, are yet to be seen as the provincial government prepares its public response on the matter for later in the week. “Our surveys conducted last year have detected a reduction in moose populations in some parts of the North Central British Columbia and the Cariboo,” says the source within the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resources. “The province is determining the best course of action and will be releasing a summary of the results as well as the actions we will take, later this week.” What actions the government may take is anyone’s best guess but it is certain that if the reductions in moose populations are as significant as suspected stakeholders such as guide outfitters, First Nations hunters and resident hunters are all to be affected. More detailed news will be available on this matter next week.

Premier Christy Clark greets students at the Williams Lake campus of Thompson Rivers University Friday afternoon before announcing funding to support skills training in forestry and mining. Clark also stopped in at the North Central Local Government Association Convention in 100 Mile House earlier in the day, and the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Best Western in Williams Lake later in the day.
Clark announces skills training funds for TRU Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The Trade department shop at Thompson Rivers University in Williams Lake set the scene for a $1.6 million training announcement Friday
afternoon, made personally by Premier Christy Clark. With University Director Ray Saunders and Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett just a step behind her, Premier Clark strode into the shop and
greeted local politicians, logging-sector business owners, students and staff with her megawatt smile before taking to the podium to announce financial support for skills training programs.
“A skilled workforce is an integral part of the economy,” Clark said, noting that the government has plans for eight new and nine expanded mines by 2015. “B.C. is going to need
workers, and it's going to need skilled workers ... (and) we want people to be able to stay in their own communities to get that training.” See CLARK on Page 16
