The Maureen Saunder's School of Dance put on their Dance Revue for 2012 called 'In the Spotlight' - this jazz dance group performs a fun peice called Hello complete with bright coloured costumes durning Sunday afternoon's performance. Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Grad weekend is upon us once more; an event sure to see proud parents, dressed up grads and fancy rides on local streets.

The GROW centre will kick off the graduation ceremonies on Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Marie Sharpe.

On Saturday, June 9, the two high schools will take to the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex to walk across the stage.

Columeetza starts things off at 9:30 a.m., followed by Williams Lake Secondary School at 1 p.m.

Grad ceremonies are going ahead as normal, except teachers will not play apart in the ceremonies.

All three schools will then participate in the annual grad parade. Grads in their chosen mode of transportation will start lining up at Sacred Heart Church at 5:30 p.m.

The parade then starts at 6:30 p.m. and will follow the same route as in previous years, making its way down Second Avenue from Sacred Heart, turning left up Borland Street, left on Fourth Avenue and right on Proctor Street to the complex.

From 7:30 to 9 p.m. parents, friends and family can view the prom and take pictures before the grads are ‘locked’ in for dry grad.

Pick up starts at 4 a.m. and goes until 5 a.m.

First Nations Youth Fair in lakecity First Nations high school students are getting a chance this week to take part in the first ever local First Nations Youth Opportunities Fair.

The fair is scheduled to take place this Thursday from

10 a.m. to noon at the Thompson Rivers University Gymnasium and will see students from Grades 10 through 12 meet with nine local business representatives to discuss job opportunities for the future.

“The First Nations

Youth Opportunity Fair is intended to give young aboriginal people a chance to take control of their futures,” states a news release announcing the event.

“In light of limited and uncertain prospects in the region, action

needs to be taken today to ensure there is hope for the community tomorrow.”

The event, organized by the also new First Nations Youth Council, is the brain child of Tsilhqot’in elder and former leader Ervin

Charleyboy.

Charleyboy is not affiliated with the local First Nation’s Tsilhot’in National Government, and has said in the past that he has been ostracized for his pro stance on Taseko Mines’ New Prosperity proposal.

Baby death in Kelowna An eight-monthold baby boy from Williams Lake has died in a Kelowna motel room.

The infant, said to be in respiratory distress, was found unconscious and not breathing Monday morning.

According to media

reports, paramedics were on scene commencing life-saving efforts on the baby just before 10 a.m.

The child was transported to hospital, but could not be revived.

RCMP in Kelowna say the baby and other

family members were visiting the Okanagan from Williams Lake.

The death is not considered suspicious, however police and the coroner are investigating.

No names have been released.

Seebach charged with forcible confinement A 28-year-old man is facing several serious criminal charges after an alleged kidnapping last week.

According to the Williams Lake RCMP, police were called to a disturbance at a local business and were advised that a man was agitated and uttering threats to harm his 20-year-old girlfriend, whom he was looking for.

The man later located the victim at a residence and reportedly forced her into his vehicle at knife point. The man then left the area with the victim in his vehicle and a description of his vehicle was dispatched to police.

Police received information from the public of a possible sighting and police were able to locate the victim and apprehend the man without further incident.

The victim suffered non life threatening injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Jason R. Seebach is

facing thirteen charges under the Criminal Code ranging from forcible confinement to aggravated sexual assault

in relation to the incident.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 13.

inspired by my husband and one of his friends sitting in the Santa Fe Cafe one day, swapping stories about when they were young growing up in the Nemiah Valley/ T'suniah/Tatlayoko part of the Chilcotin,” said Purjue. “The poem draws pictures of what they did as young cowboys, and describes them as they are now.”

Purjue said she has always loved to write and that words fascinate her. This is the sec-

ond time she is having her poetry published.

The first was in a horse magazine a couple of years ago.

Her poem, ‘Old Cowboys’ will be printed in the June/July issue of Our Canada, along with the other winners of the contest.

“I write the monthly newsletter for The Williams Lake Spinners, Weavers and Fiber Artists Guild, which is sent to countries overseas as well as around

our province,” she said. “ And I also write ‘Grandma Purjue's Little Christmas Books,’ which I write, illustrate, print and bind as gifts for family and friends each Christmas.”

Purjue said she has an assorted collection of poetry, stories and songs, most of them being child-friendly that are waiting in a filling cabinet.

“Maybe someday I’ll actually have a book published.”

The theme for the 68th Annual Show and Sale of the Cariboo Art Society at the Station House Gallery is “Wonder”.

The Art group is in their second year of occupying the Old Fire Hall and meets at 10 AM every Saturday morning.

Everyone’s vision of “Wonder” is different, of course. Many things are special to each of us. They bring back “Wonder” full memories that we like to cherish and are enhanced by paintings in our own styles.

Bare’s celebrates 10 years in the community Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor For the past ten years, Barry Hanson has done what he knows best – auto bodywork at his body shop Bare’s Paint and Bodyworks.

Along with the support from his wife Carol, Barry has operated Bare’s and this year is celebrating 10 years of being in the community.

“After working in the trade for 20 years, it was time for a change and to go out on my own,” said Barry. “I worked for my parents at the Honda dealership until they retired and it just made sense to open my own place” “We are big supporters of the community,” said Barry. “We use top of the line BASF refinish products, and all our paint, and parts come from local suppliers.”

Flying Club offers free flights for children Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Has your child ever expressed an interest in flying, maybe even as a future pilot or engineer?

This Saturday, the Williams Lake Flying Club and the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) are giving children aged eight to 18 the opportunity to go for a ride in an airplane for free. “(The WL Flying Club) is a non profit society,” said Donna Lee Barbour, treasurer for the club. “We support COPA’s mandate to bring aviation to our youth.”

Barbour said the club has been putting on the free flights for children for years at the Springhouse Airpark, and it’s something the guys really enjoy.

“It gives a little back to the community,” said Barbour. “The guys all donate their time and airplanes for the afternoon.”

She said they had just about 80 children show up last year, and this year with 12 planes they will be able to handle up to 100 children.

Barbour said there will be a few different kind of airplanes including a Tri Pacer, seven Cessna’s and a couple Citabria’s as well as a helicopter.

“They will each have 15 minute in the air,” she said. “It’s a great

introduction to flying.”

Barbour said the club will be out at the Williams Lake Airport from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to register.

“We really hope to

spark some interest in aviation in some of the youth,” she said.

something we’re very proud of,” Carol said The name for Barry’s paint and body shop came from a nickname that his late Uncle Nick Bluda gave to him when he was three years old. The name became Bare’s Paint and Bodyworks.

“Ten years ago I stayed working so Barry could build the business,” said Carol. “It’s his passion – anything with a motor, that’s his thing.” Carol takes care of everything in the office, and does the estimate and photo’s for ICBC. We make a good team said Carol, I look after all the front end stuff and Bare works his magic in the back.

Barry and Carol, also employee four other people, two of which they brought here from Vancouver.

Sage advice to the grads This weekend hundreds of grads will across the stage, receive their diplomas, get dressed up and attend dry grad celebrations.

But what’s next? That’s the big question that many of the young grads may say they know the answer too, but maybe you don’t.

Or at least the answers might change.

When I walked across that stage my thoughts were focused on finally finishing high school, but grad really didn’t signify an end, it was actually the start of something big – the rest of my life.

Many of you have your plans for the fall figured out but some-

times not having a plan or going a little off course isn’t always a bad thing.

Life has a funny way of getting in the way sometimes.

When I finished high school seven years ago, my plan was to attend TRU in Kamloops that fall, finish a Bachelor of Arts degree then get my teaching degree, but that never happened.

I stayed here, took some upgrading classes at TRU in town, eventually moved to Calgary (followed a boy), broke up with said boy, decided on a new career, went to school for two years and ended up back in Williams Lake in the

job I currently have as a reporter. Definitely not the way I saw my life going when I graduated from high school. I wouldn’t say that’s a bad thing though, going to university when I wasn’t ready wouldn’t have turned out right, and living in Calgary on my own really gave me an eye opening taste of the ‘real world’ that I wouldn’t trade for anything. I made some of the best friends I’ve ever had and defined who I am as a person.

Calgary wasn’t in my ‘plan’ when I was 18, but it was a wobble off my course in life that I am glad I made.

Set courses and

plans sometimes are meant to be broken, and sometimes the most fun things aren’t part of ‘the plan.’ I certainly had some of the best times of my young life while living in Calgary and trying to figure it all out and I don’t event know if I am there yet. But that’s the beauty of life, there are no mistakes just wobbles here and there and experiences to learn from.

My advice to the graduating class of 2012, is have fun, stick to your plan if it’s making you happy but don’t be afraid to let life get in the way and to wobble a little off course sometimes.

Come out and Pedal by the Puddle Come rain or shine, one of Williams Lake’s premier biking events is set to take place this weekend -- the fifth annual Pedal by the Puddle.

For those of you not familiar with the event, the Pedal by the Puddle is a six hour enduro race on a 10 kilometre course through the beautiful forests of South Lakeside, put on by the Williams Lake

Cycling Club.

The course is made up of 80 per cent twisting and turning single track with heart-healthy climbs and hair-rising descents.

Anyone of any ability can enter the race whether as a solo rider or teams of two with the object of the race to complete as many 10 km laps as quickly as possible.

Believe it or not, last

year’s top racers, both male and female, managed to get in seven laps in under six hours!

The race last year attracted 136 adult entries and 34 children’s entries, with 58 riders coming in from out-oftown.

Again this year kicking off the races is the popular kids’ events the Mini-Pedal by the Puddle and the MicroPedal by the Puddle,

which showcases what a great family sport mountain biking has become locally.

This year, there will be a pre-race yoga session led by the staff of Satya Yoga Studio at 9:15 a.m.

So, if you’re interested in seeing what a mountain bike race looks like, turn left on Gun-a-noot Trail and follow the signs into the forest.

Times past full of heart, hardship and character building I have come to the conclusion, that my whole life has been a blessing in disguise.

Translation? Why do I always end up learning the hard way?

Such as; I was 17 when I first entered a dentist office, old Dr. McLean, who still used pedal power to run his drills, no electricity. I was a bit suspicious when I saw all these folks in his waiting room with cartons of eggs, baskets of vegetables and live chickens. Did I mention he didn’t use Novocain or whatever they use these days to dull the pain, but instead rubbed my gums with some concoction made from cloves?

I learned a valuable lesson from that painful

experience. Investigate before committing!

Also, I never saw a television set until I was 18, not being exposed to any commercials or becoming addicted to pop culture.

I was brought up on radio. John Grierson, the father of Canadian documentary, used to express his great concern that television would render us passive. He

was right. Listening to radio cultivated fertile visual imaginations as we painted pictures in our heads of the events unfolding. Terry and the Pirates, The Shadow and The Green Hornet, were some of our favourite shows.

I remember getting our water in winter by chopping a hole in the ice on the lake, going to the outhouse at 30 below Fahrenheit and being constantly put to the task of feeding our old Quebec heater wood stove. I scrounged whatever fuel that could be found in the nearest vicinity, as we could only afford the occasional bag of coal.

Our abode was not well insulated and was largely heated by a stove

pipe that ran the length of the house. Common in those days and I suspect, still in use in the Cariboo today. We hung our wet mittens over the stove steaming up the kitchen, getting hot water for washing from the side reservoir.

One of my other jobs as a 14-year-old kid was to haul gravel from the beach to create a road into our place. I did 10 wheelbarrows a day after school. I also recall the farm kids coming in on the bus to our local high school having already put in an hour or two of farm chores before breakfast and going home after school to shovel out the barn, often in freezing temperatures. Then doing their school homework.

I’m starting to sound like some old fart saying; “in my day etc.” Like my father admonishing me when he asked to do some task that I balked at, that he had to clean out the chicken coup every Saturday for a nickel. Well yes, we had it tough at times and today’s kids? I guess it depends where they are coming from, what type of parents they have and how well they appreciate hard work.

I’ve just finished reading “The Rainbow Chasers” by Ervin MacDonald who pioneered with his family just up the road from where I now live. His grandfather came from the Isle of Skye and so did mine, so I felt a real affinity. Here is a

straightforward account of a family struggling on the frontier and I highly recommended it, if you haven’t yet got around to it. But my God, talk about hard work? I never had it so good, these guys were at it 24/7. I know there are families (mostly rural), that give out chores to all the kids and they are brought up with a sense of responsibility, like one family down the road from me. No one waits on them, they all serve each other.

Character building as they say and serving to allow respect to foster.

I once saw a television interview of a 100-year-old man who was asked what was the best time during his life. His answer? “Well,

I lived in a run down old farm on the prairies with a wife and five kids trying to make a go if it. We loved each other and gave it the best we could.” Hard as it was, that was his time of hope and glory.

Now it appears, we are in for hard times again with the ongoing financial depression leading once again to the taking of personal responsibility and people learning to depend on each other. For this in some ways, we should be thankful, that a more resourceful population will emerge. Also allowing for new ways of doing business, more direct, more real, more honest and more local.

Like the old days, with heart and fortitude.

Imperial Metals holds AGM in lakecity Congratulations to Imperial Metals Corp. for holding their Annual General Meeting in Williams Lake.

Byng Giraud, Vice President of Corporate Affairs for the firm, said it was great to hold their AGM in Williams Lake as it gave them another opportunity to take directors and shareholders on a tour of Mt. Polley Mine.

This is the first time the annual corporation meeting has been held out of the lower mainland.

The mining company held their AGM in the Gibraltar Room, and it was also attended by Mayor Kerry Cook, Economic Development Manager Alan Madrigga ,

Last Thursday Chamber of Commerce members were treated to a look at how the historic agreement between the Mt. Polley Mine and the Band

came together.

Byron Louie, WLIB economic development representative said the accord is precedent setting as they were the first band to sign an agreement with an existing mine. He told businesses at the Chamber meeting that it was a tough go in the first two years but got better after that and they came to an agreement after four years of negotiating. He also stated that the mine showed the band respect.

Byng Giraud said the agreement was a big step for Imperial Metals and Mt Polley Mine.

Again, kudos to Mt. Polley and the Williams Lake Indian Band for signing this agreement. I know this

officially took place last February but with Imperial Metals holding their Annual General Meeting in Williams and both sides once again coming together, I thought this would bear repeating.

Allow me to switch topics. Our Canada has Free Trade with other countries, but here on our own turf we have restrictions that does not allow us that ‘free trade.’

Did you know that if you went to visit friends in Alberta and while there, you purchased a bottle of wine and brought it back to Williams Lake, you are breaking a law that is seventy or more years old.

You are not allowed to transport or send

wine from province to province. Our wineries have increased threefold in B.C. during the last ten years and it is a shame we can’t share some of the B.C. wine in the world, with the rest of Canada.

A private member’s bill in Parliament which would remove federal barriers to transport wine from one province to another and also allow us to buy wine from wineries in other provinces to take home or have it shipped to our house, has stalled because of politics. I understand there are enough folks on all sides of the Federal Parliament wanting to give the bill go through and it is expected to pass before parliament adjourns.

Consultants from Professional Environmental Recreation Consultants Ltd. (PERC) have been contracted to develop the pool feasibility study

goes overnight to symbolize a cancer patient’s journey. The sun setting is being diagnosed, the long hours of the night symbolize the battle, and dawn is the release either by losing the battle or winning, but being free of the disease.

Activities got started with opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. Saturday night, where Williams Lake Councilor Danica Hughes said a few words before the survivors did the first lap with the Williams Lake Pipe Band.

The sun shone for a few hours as activities got under way with a performance by Owen Barter. There was also square dancing with the Williams Lake Square dancing club, Zumba lessons from Curves and then three brave people had their hair cut to be made into wigs for those with Cancer.

Dreams of house boats and hunting trips Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor After two years of dreaming it and a full winter of building it from scratch, Vern Williams test drove his future houseboat in the pouring rain on Horsefly Lake Friday.

“The anticipation was how fast it would go,” Williams said, allsmiles from the deck of his house boat deck Sunday at Horsefly Provincial Park.

“Unfortunately it doesn’t go as fast as I’d hoped but it’s really stable.”

After a few “modifications,” Williams planned to have his creation back in the water this week to help a friend transport lumber to build a home on a remote location of Horsefly Lake while it is still in the stage of being a barge.

But Williams’ real goal is to have his house boat complete by this summer and ready to relax on with his longtime wife Pauline, by hunting season.

“She can hardly wait,” Williams said of his wife’s excitement for their “retirement property,” which the couple plan to enjoy on Horsefly and nearby Quesnel Lake.

“She’s been upset it’s taken me away from so much housework, but she’ll love it when it’s done. You won’t be able to get her off it.”

Willliams’ path to a Cariboo retirement began years ago when, as a young certified marine mechanic, Williams set off from his home at Tsawwassen in the Lower Mainland in search of work and less busy surrounds.

Williams found his way to the Cariboo;

settling into the rural community of Horsefly and a 15-year job working as a bush mechanic and operator for a logging operation on the north arm of Quesnel Lake.

Vern Williams and his youngest son Evan. married on the shores at the Quesnel Lake Resort in 1986 and have since raised two sons, Matthew and Evan.

In 2007 Williams quit the long hours of logging life due to a medical concern and has been working at Mount Polley ever since as an equipment operator.

“I’m semi-retired now,” Williams laughs

of the easier shifts at the mine of seven days on, and seven off.

The schedule has allowed him to work

on his boat projects, the first being a 27 foot landing craft which carried fours quads into his favorite moose hunting

areas at Quesnel Lake in November.

Then Williams dreamt up his current project - the 35 foot pontoon barge, which when complete will see a house (with indoor pumping), constructed on it, which he plans to navigate the waters of Quesnel Lake with.

“The first time I saw it I couldn’t believe it,” he said of Quesnel Lake.

“It is a beautiful lake in the middle of nowhere.”

Being familiar with the powerful storms that can sweep over Quesnel Lake, Williams plans to relax on his boat, weather permitting of course.

Motocross racers rip up the tracks over the weekend Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor It was two days of racing hard and getting dirty for motocross riders over the weekend in Williams Lake.

Riders came from all over B.C. to ride in the Canadian Kawasaki - BCMA North Series Rounds 5 & 6, June 2 & 3, 2012.

The Williams Lake Dirt Riders Association hosted the series.

There were a number of local riders racing in different classes. On Saturday, rain in the early morning caused some mud, but did help to keep the dust to a minimum.

The races started off Saturday with the 85cc 12 to 16 year olds, where Williams

There were two local riders in the 40 plus group, Glen Oosting who finished fourth, and Fred Kiaser who came ninth.

In the Schoolboy class, there were six riders and only one from Williams Lake. Brett Hare finished in fifth place.

For the ladies, Sara King from Fort St. John dominated, but Williams Lake’s Annelise Shendruk finished in a close second.

In the little 50cc class, the youngsters tore up the track and 150 Mile House’s Marcus Deausy came first. Thomas Kaiser and Cayden Kunka Vedan both of Williams Lake finished in third and fourth.

local riders, Wyatt Branch from Williams Lake took second place. Local riders Kaelan Kohlen, Jonathan Fluttert and Kyle Lemky, Derek Sokan, Brett Hare and Ethan Desmond also raced in the Junior B class.

To finish off the day, the Vet Juniors and Masters raced. There were two local riders one in each class, Rick Seibert from 150 mile House finished fifth in the Vet Junior race and Glen Oosting from Williams Lake finished in fifth as well in the Vet Master class.

Rodeo season is underway and this

weekend youth from all over the region will flock to Williams Lake competing in High School Rodeo Finals.

Traditionally the large-scale event takes place in Kamloops or Merrit but for the second year, it will be held in Williams Lake.

“The Stampede Association is always trying to promote youth in the sport of rodeo,” said President of the Stampede Association

Fred Thomas. “And our Stampede facility is the best in B.C.” The 2012 Provincial Championships for High School Rodeo will take place at the Stampede Grounds June 8, 9 and 10 and will see the top 12 High School Rodeo athletes in each event from the North Region (north of Quesnel) compete with the top 12 athletes from the South Region (Quesnel and south) for the title

of BC Champion and the opportunity to earn scholarships and prizes.

The top four finishers will also earn a position on the BC Team competing at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyoming in July and the top five in each event win a position on the BC Team competing at the Canadian High School Rodeo Finals in Virden, Manitoba in August.

The Williams Lake U13 Boys defeated Prince George U13 Boys to win the Zone Championships this weekend in Prince George. This gives them a position in the U13 Provincials in Aldergrove July 5-8. The boys lost their first game on Sunday 2-1. As the Championship was determined over two games, with goals for and against depicting the champion, the boys needed to win by two goals. Their second game showed their skill and determination and they beat Prince George 2-0.

The annual event, hosted by the Williams Lake Cycling Club, attracts dozens of out-of-town riders. WLSA Outdoor Outreach Adventures

Submitted by Wayne Biffert The Williams Lake Sportsmen’s Association (WLSA) is going to start taking people with mobility problems on trips down

the Williams Lake river valley trail. They have an Argo 8X8 Avenger that was donated to the club by the Rick Hansen Foundation with the understanding it would be used to

help facilitate people with spinal cord injuries and mobility problems to get outdoors.

As the Argo is really rough riding in the bush, it was decided to approach the City of

Williams Lake to try to get permission to take people down the river trail. The trail is relatively smooth and the scenery is great.

Permission was granted and they added that they are trying to make life more enjoyable for handicapped persons. They appreciate the added service to the community.

Some modifications were done on the Argo to try to make it easier for people to get in and out of the vehicle. Steps and a handrail were manufactured by Cariboo Steel & Machine Ltd. The steps were painted

by Mark IV Collision Repairs. The WLSA and community of Williams Lake thank these two businesses as well as the Rick Hansen Foundation for helping to provide this opportunity to the citizens of Williams Lake. The modern method of smoking foods adds a nice flavor and it also tenderizes the meats.

I use some alder and put it in a small tin foil pan directly over the heat of the barby. When smoking, the heat range should be in the 200 - 230 degree range. This low heat used for smoking is just perfect to do ribs for a

couple of hours and it gives the natural fibers in the meat time to break down and become tender. Last weekend I made up a rub of some spices I had in the cupboard and with this I covered the ribs with a generous complete coating. I let them sit in the fridge for about three hours, so the nice spice and herb taste will get happy with the meat.

I turned the barbecue to 300 degrees to get the smoke started and after about a half hour, it was turned down to 225 degrees.
