Lakecity welcomes new pediatrician

For several years now, residents in Williams Lake have had to go out of town to seek the help of a pediatrician or wait for an appointment with a visiting pediatrician.

Last week, patients began to meet Dr. Monica Mckay,

who has come to Williams Lake from South Africa with her family, to be the lakecity’s very own pediatrician.

“We have wanted to move to Canada for a few years, and on a tour of different communities we had the opportunity to visit Williams

Lake,” said Dr. Mckay. “We really liked what Williams Lake had to offer.”

Dr. Mckay will be practicing out of the Child Development Centre building, which is currently being renovated to accommodate a proper doctor’s office, along

with waiting room.

“It’s a great idea for a pediatrician to be set up in a central location with a pediatrician, a physiotherapist, and occupational therapist all under one roof,” said Dr. Mckay. “I m very excited to be here.”

This year’s Stampede Parade the theme is Rockin’ & Rollin’ in the Cariboo. In a fitting tribute to the theme, Morris Bates, the lakecity’s first really great Elvis tribute artist, will be this year’s honorary parade marshal.

Catalano said with many of the seniors being old cowboys and cowgirls, the rides bring back many smiles and memories.

“It’s a great day for the seniors, but it wouldn’t be possible without all the volunteers,” said Catalano.

The afternoon was complete with music, BBQ, and good company for all the seniors and there were many smiles.

Rock returned Members of the Canoe Creek Band and many other First Nations were on hand at Churn Creek Protected Area last week for the much-anticipated arrival of a hundred year old petroglyph.

The 11,000-pound boulder was taken from the territory in 1926 by horses and then by rail

to Vancouver where it sat on display in Stanley Park for decades. Due to vandalism, it was moved to the courtyard at the Vancouver Museum where it sat until its journey home to Churn Creek.

The all-party Special Committee on Timber Supply was appointed by the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia to examine and make recommendations to address the loss of mid-term timber supply in the central interior. Specifically, the committee must consider recommendations that could increase timber supply. A discussion paper describing the issue and outlining possible options is available online to inform and focus public input.

The committee will be holding a public hearing in Williams Lake on Thursday, July 5.

British Columbians may also participate by sending a written submission, or a video or audio file.

The deadline for public input is Friday, July 20, 2012.

Animal cruelty charges stayed Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Charges alleging animal cruelty against an area rancher were stayed earlier this month because the BC SPCA and RCMP did not complete trial readiness paperwork, according to the Crown.

“I feel bad for them.

(The lead investigators) feel very strongly about the case but I’m not sure there’s any solution,” said Crown Counsel Rod Hawkins, who stayed the matter June 6 in Provincial

Court just weeks before the trial was slated to start. “(Completing trial readiness paperwork) is standard in any case.”

The case against McLeese Lake area rancher Rob Weetman was highly publicized in the provincial media last year.

At the time, reports from SPCA staff described the scene where investigators found the ranch “littered with dead and starving animals.”

The BC SPCA

alleged that of Weetman’s 170 cattle, almost 40 starved to death and the rest were “severely” emaciated.

Weetman contacted media last week to ensure outlets printed that he no longer had any charges against him relating to the SPCA investigation.

Weetman had entered pleas of not guilty. He was facing charges under the Criminal Code as well as Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. Hawkins said

Crown could reinstate the charges, however the July trial date is long gone and a new trial date wouldn’t be available until spring 2013.

Provincial court time is becoming increasingly precious and hard to come by.

Hawkins said in Williams Lake the courts are so overbooked that as many as seven trials are scheduled to start on one trial date alone.

Moments later, the suspect vehicle was located near the Dairy Fields off of Midnight Drive.

“In efforts to evade police, the suspect vehicle rammed one of the police cars and then attempted to hit a police officer who was out on foot,” Brown said, noting the vehicle was able to flee the scene again.

At approximately 4 a.m., the Alexis Creek RCMP located the suspect vehicle while conducting a road check on Hwy 20 west of Williams Lake.

After a lengthy pursuit north of Hwy 20 on several forestry service roads, a spike belt was deployed which disabled the vehicle.

One occupant was immediately apprehended while the other remains at large. The other suspect fled into the nearby forest and escaped.

The suspect vehicle was believed to be stolen from Williams Lake.

The male suspect, 20. was remanded into custody until Wednesday, awaiting possible charge approval.

There’s just no time,” he said.

In fact, the symptoms of an overburdened court system has be seen on a regular basis in the Lower Mainland with more serious criminal cases being stayed in recent years but now the problem is starting to show itself in Williams Lake as well.

The B.C. Government is ramping up their efforts to sell youth on the opportunities they say will be available in the labour market in the years to come.

A touring exhibit called JobFest will be in Willliams Lake throughout the Stampede weekend, July 29 - July and aims to connect with young people and their families, educating them on labour market trends and the career opportunities available.

“This is going to be a really fun experience for youth,” Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett stated in a news release.

JobFest will be a rock concertthemed mobile event designed to get youth and young adults excited about their futures, while teaching them about the various tools and

resources government has developed to support them in their quest to find their perfect career.

“With the thrill of the Stampede mixed with a touring educational rock show, we’re guaranteed to catch their attention and hopefully help them answer some important life decisions.”

While on location, JobFest will feature inspiring youth stories, interactive career discovery, a headliner band and local community talent. JobFest staff will guide visitors through information displays and job tools, answer questions and ensure greater awareness of the many labour market services available.

Kwaleen elementary a growing success Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Students at Kwaleen Traditional Elementary School are developing green thumbs.

The school has had two on-site gardens to learn from, and over the past three weeks a third garden was added and was made possible thanks a local business.

“The students learn about nature, they learn the names of plants, how to plant them correctly and how to take care of the plants,” said Kwaleen principal, John Silkstone.

The third garden just completed is an indigenous plant garden that has shrubs, wild grasses and wild flower perennials that are all native to the area according to

Getting branded with high vacancy and high crime Williams Lake keeps making the top spots, unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.

We are often making a name for ourselves as being the hot spot for the number of crimes committed here as well as the number of violent crimes.

Last Friday’s incident which could have seen officers killed by a reckless suspect in a stolen vehicle is a good example of the level of crime threatening the safety of the public and RCMP officers charged

to protect it.

Earlier in the year (actually just as Rick Hansen and his team rolled into town) a magazine rated us as the second worst town to live in, in Canada. That one hurt.

And now, though not as serious but still worrisome, it has been said that Williams Lake has the third highest vacancy rate in the province. Only Prince Rupert and Quesnel are worse off.

I don’t get it. Are things really that bad

here? Is it that we can’t see our own problems because we live here?

Is it wrong to think you’re great when it seems like no one else does? Maybe we are too cool to care.

Recently city council moved forward with their brand project.

Council approved the hiring of the Taiji Brand Group to complete a place brand project for the City of Williams Lake at a fee not in excess of $45,000.

“As part of the BEAS, the City identi-

fied the need to complete a place brand for our community. A professional brand and associated sub-brands will be used to reinforce the City’s commitment to the retention and attraction of business and skilled workers, and being a healthy, sustainable community where people want to live, work and visit,” says the City.

I don’t know about you, but I’d lean toward saving the $45 grand.

I think we’ve already been branded.

Please, someone turn off the taps It may be the first day of summer but the weather sure isn’t cooperating this month. So far, the Cariboo region has seen more rain than sun and after a very wet weekend it’s hard to find the spirit to celebrate the first day of summer.

June 20 marks the start of summer solstice and is the lon-

gest day of the year.

As much as we would like to think it should also mark the start of nothing but beautiful summer weather, Mother Nature usually has other ideas.

There are currently flood warnings for the Fraser River, Horsefly River and Quesnel River and Prince George is on flood watch. All over

the province summer weather is on hiatus and April showers have decided to take over June, which has lead many B.C. residents to refer to it as June-uary.

Just to prove that theory, the Cariboo Mountains showed off a fresh dusting of snow last weekend.

In the last week, more than 30 mm of

rain fell in the Horsefly area, along with 30 mm over the lakecity. The calendar may say summer is here, but the rain says otherwise.

We may all wish the sun would come out like it has in weekends’ past, but let’s all remember that a wet June usually means a slow fire season and that is something we can all enjoy.

Things left unsaid and the philosophy of living How many times do we wish we had said something (or unsaid something) but didn’t, and were left to regret it afterwards? Comments I have made in haste, jest or anger, are too numerous to mention and too late to retract, so I will present a few examples of those left unsaid.

I was a tenant to another Bob who had a terminal illness. He was a Libra like me, so we got along famously well.

Once I was about to say to him; “I couldn’t wish for a better landlord.”

However, he had turned away from me and I pushed the comment off for some future time. I never saw him again, as he died shortly

after.

Another regret of things unsaid, came about while I was sitting at a bar in Osaka, Japan having gone there on a filming assignment for the World’s Fair in 1980.

Sitting next to me was a young American pilot, dressed in full military uniform. I turned to

make conversation and said; “So what are you up to these days?” He turned to me and replied; “Oh, I drop napalm on Vietnamese villages.” I was stunned and for the moment, speechless. I could see he was deeply tormented and suffering great remorse over it. But before I could gather my wits about me and respond, a nurse came out of the ladies washroom, giving me a malevolent look and whisked him away. He had been sent for some R&R and the nurse was his caretaker. What would I have said given a moment more of his time? “God has forgiven you, you

must learn to forgive yourself.” Go back after the war and build some schools.”

Here is brought to mind the oft-quoted Alexander Pope, an English poet & satirist; “To err is human, to forgive divine.” Yet my attitude toward forgiveness in this case, was coloured with the hard fact of the U.S. using both Agent Orange and napalm in Viet Nam and the great suffering this military exercise caused. I must say, I am still working on understanding the Divine forgiveness part.

My wife made the great transition awhile back, succumbing to an incurable disease.

Although I loved her

immeasurably, the last thing I said to her was; “Well. I’ll see you at nine.” Planning to go to the hospital early in the morning and not knowing that in the night, she would take a turn for the worse. Here again, why could I have not expressed my deep love for her and reminded her that I would always be with her in spirit?

Too late, the moment had passed. Although I am comforted by the knowledge, that she resides in grace, I still suffer some remorse over final comments and things left unsaid.

One does strive to do right by circumstance and not always is it played correctly. We do miss our chances.

Like many of us, I often play the tapes in my head back and make corrections. Or run the memory of the experience in my mind in the manner I would wish it had gone, given the wisdom of hindsight.

Wouldn’t we all like to have another go at it, expressing love for the person we had the experience with, knowing we could have played it better? Not loving enough is always, (probably for most of us) our cross to bear.

Every word we speak can be a benefit to life and those we encounter within it, if we speak with love in our hearts.

Every action and indeed thought, has a consequence. It’s how we

deal with life that determines the outcome of cause and effect. Are we are not here to make things better, leave the world in a better place?

Here again, much will be made of the lost opportunities to do so, for alas, it is all behind us. I think we must pervade to be the loving self in what is yet before us. Here is the lesson learned.

In the end, regret does not serve us well, as it is always not in our best interest, to make of life what we will, after the fact. Lin Yutang, the 19th century Chinese author sums it up beautifully. “ I have done my best. That is about all the philosophy of living one needs.”

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor National Aboriginal Day is tomorrow, June 21, and to celebrate the whole community is invited to come watch the parade and to celebrate in Boitanio Park afterwards.

“The parade is starting at 10 a.m. at the Elks Hall, making its way up Oliver Street to Save-On Foods and finishing at Boitanio Park,” said Bonnie Slack, who is the chair of the National Aboriginal Day festivities. “The parade will be lead by our chiefs, Anne Louie, Bev Sellars, Hank Adams, and hopefully David Archie and Mike Archie.”

Slack said the parade will also include two soccer players from Soda Creek and four hockey players, Joan Gentles along with the

First Nation Role Models, the Little Chiefs Primary School will also be walking in full regalia and there will lots more involved in the parade.

“Once we arrive at the park, the festivities will be started with an opening prayer and welcoming by Chief Ann Louie,” said Slack.

At noon there will be a talent show for all ages, and there will be information booths set up in the park along with bannock being available.

“There is going to be lots going on, both fun for the kids as well as informational,” she said.

The event wraps up around 2:30 with two door prizes bring drawn – one for a golf pass at Coyote Rock and a pass for the Xat’Sull Heritage Village.

The route this year is the same as last year: it starts and finishes in Boitanio Park. CN Rail has graciously allowed the City of Williams Lake a permit to use the service road along

the lane between the RC Cotton lands and Dutch Point Road for this event. Since the permit is only for the day of the race, no training along the tracks before the race will be permitted.

The beautiful lakehugging route will be similar to the original Dave Jacobs Classic route. Participants will turn off of Highway

20 onto Bagshaw Road and follow the tracks to Dutch Point Road.

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Despite the wet conditions, more than 50 pure breed dogs along with their owners gathered at the Cariboo Kennel Club’s Training Diamond at the Stampede Grounds for a sanctioned dog show.

“We have people from town, 100 Mile House, Kelowna and few other places,” said Donna-Marie Cyr from the Cariboo Kennel Club. “It’s a sanctioned event, that

once the clubs have put on three they can host a dog show.”

Cyr said the Canadian Cane Corso Association hosted Saturday’s Obedience and Confirmation events and the Cariboo Kennel Club hosted Sunday’s events.

“In a sanctioned event it’s like a real show, but with no points—owners get prizes and ribbons for their participation,” said Cyr. “In confirmation, the dog is judged against breed standards, and in obedience the dogs have to do different things depending

On top of the obedience and confirmation events for the pure breeds, there was also a ‘Canine Good Neighbour’ test for all other dogs, pure breed or not, where their manners could be put to the test.

Potato Pizza with Bacon and Rosemary Enough yellow cornmeal to sprinkle over a pizza pan Pizza Dough 2 Tbsp olive oil 1/4 lb of sliced lean bacon, about 4 slices.

3/4 lb of red potatoes sliced thinly 1 Tbsp fresh rosemary 3 Tbsp freshly ground Parmesan cheese Pepper and Salt to taste Sprinkle an oiled 14 inch pizza pan with cornmeal. Roll out dough and fit onto pan. Brush doug with 1 tbsp of oil. Cook bacon and remove before crispy. Cut

Potato Pizza with Bacon and Rosemary Recently I had the opportunity to cook a six course dinner for seven people. The dinner was purchased by Jim Knowles, the owner of the Mcdonalds restaurant in town. It is always tough to cook a dinner for somebody who owns an eating establishment, because they obviously have had some fine meals over the years.

I cooked a fruit stuffed pork tenderloin as the entre. Also included were crepes, a Thai soup, a cheesecake dessert and a salad.
