Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Old co-workers and friends were still in shock yesterday after a well-known and much loved floatplane pilot and surveyor was killed in a plane crash last Saturday.

Monty Exton, 78, was the lone occupant of his Cessna 185 float plane which went down on a steep embankment along the Fraser River about nine kilometers northwest of Williams Lake.

Authorities were notified Saturday evening that Exton was overdue from an afternoon flight. Search and rescue crews out of Comox conducted an aerial search and found the wreckage late that night.

“It’s hard,” says Nicole Robicheau, longtime office manager at Exton and Dodge Land Surveying. “We’ve all been here a long time – it’s a bad day. Monty was such a kind and caring person.”

Exton’s friend and longtime business partner Doug Dodge struggled for the words to describe what he’ll miss most about Exton, “his stories, his jokes … his comradeship.”

Land Surveyor Monty Exton will be missed Continued from Page 2 Dodge said it was Exton who convinced him to become a surveyor after the two worked together in the late sixties and became fast friends one summer, bonding over their common love of “playing ball and drinking beer.”

Dodge said Exton was friendly, outgoing and was an all around good guy who loved to hear a good joke and tell one too.

Dodge said Exton retired from the company in 2000 but still loved to help out on the odd job, even right up until a few weeks ago.

Exton was also known for his community mindedness and love for sports.

He always looked 10 to 15 years younger than he was,” said Dodge.

“He worked hard out in the bush (all his life) and kept himself in good shape.”

Dodge said Exton loved flying for work and pleasure, always keeping a fishing rod in the plane to fish some of the pristine fly in lakes he explored.

Sage Birchwater, a local author who accepted Exton’s help recently in getting aerial images for a book on the history of aviation in the Cariboo

Chilcotin Coast, said Exton was one of the founding directors of the B.C. Float Plane Association and always ready to help out.

“Thanks to him, we’ve got some spectacular images of the countryside around Quesnel Lake. He was wonderful that way.

We are shaken, losing him.”

A celebration of life is being held for Mr. Exton on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Elk’s Hall.

Police uncover drugs Williams Lake RCMP recovered a large quantity of drugs with a value in excess of $10,000.

The RCMP responded to a report of a break and enter in progress at a rural property 30 km south of Williams Lake on Highway 97 in the early hours of Monday, July 2. While

en route were updated that the suspect had fled the scene in a blue Chevrolet vehicle.

The members quickly located the suspect vehicle and arrested the lone occupant without incident. A subsequent search resulted in the recovery of the stolen property as well as the large quantity of drugs

with a street value in excess of $10,000. The drugs are believed to be unrelated to the break and enter and the lone male suspect is from the Prince George area and well known to police.

The lone suspect remains in custody and will appear in Williams Court on 2012-07-03.

A star comes home Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor There is a meaningful relationship between NHL superstar goalie Carey Price and his hometown of Williams Lake.

For his many fans, seeing Price take the time to come home to the Williams Lake Stampede each year and take part in the team roping means a chance to see and maybe even talk to their most cherished hockey hero - a humble young man who is a mentor and an important role model for both First Nations and non-First Nations youth.

For Price, coming home means a break from his high pressure, high stakes lifestyle to ground himself and just relax with family and friends.

“It’s good to come home,” Price said as we walked to his horse trailer, after he agreed politely and without hesitation to an interview.

“The rodeo community is just a down-toearth group of people.

That’s why it’s so nice to come back and just be me. They give me

a hard time, just like friends should.”

It’s quite likely those friends really gave Price a hard time at the grounds Monday, as word got out that the Montreal Canadians re-signed Price to a six-year contract at a lucrative $6.5 million per season.

Price conducted a conference call with media regarding the big deal from Williams Lake Monday, describing the six-year term as a strategic.

“I’ll be 30 when this deal expires and that’s when I should be in my prime,” Price was quoted as saying in the conference. “I hope I’ve had a few good seasons and a Stanley Cup or two and I’ll be set for my next contract.”

At his horse trailer, Price described the transition of going from a small town rodeo competitor and hockey player to a world famous NHL goalie playing at Madison Square Gardens as “pretty surreal.”

“It’s a big transition,” Price says of growing up in Anahim Lake and then living in large cities, admit-

“I think I’ve become more citified than I’d like to admit.”

Price and his longtime girlfriend, whom he met while playing junior hockey in Washington have settled into an acreage in Kelowna large enough to keep his two team roping horses, Fuzz and Comet, at home during the summer months while Price is in training.

When it’s hockey season and time to go back to Montreal, Price said his team roping partner Wade McNolty takes care of the horses

for the winter.

Price’s parents Lynda and Jerry Price continue to live in Williams Lake while his sister Kayla is currently in school in Kamloops where she is studying communications.

Price said his favourite event to watch in the Stampede is Saddle Bronc, which he said is very challenging, while he describes the popular Mountain Race as “about 30 seconds of madness.”

“It’s dangerous but it’s tradition. It’s always been at this rodeo. The riders (who compete) are very proud (to be apart of it) and look forward to it all year.”

While at the rodeo Price graciously took the time to greet many nervous young fans who wanted his autograph or their picture taken with the star.

“I still remember what was it like,” Price said of meeting his own hockey heros like Trevor Linden and Ken Dryden, whose autograph he still has today.

Price was headed to Kelowna Monday afternoon and back to training, where he will once again face the pressures of being one of the highest cap hit goalies in the NHL.

Performances in the Park all geared up to rock Lakecity Williams Lake, BC - Presented by the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, the City of Williams Lake and the Cariboo Regional District.

This year’s line up for Performances in the Park summer concert series rocks! Local and provincial performers will light up the stage in Boitanio Park each Thursday evening from July 5th to August 16th. From 5 - 6 pm performers will be or will cater to children and youth, and from 7 - 8 pm acts, oriented towards adults, will be family friendly. The line up includes Rock and Roll, Jazz, Bluegrass, Dancers, Theatre and more.

Youth acts are diverse in genre and capture the attention of young and old alike. Local teenager, Robyn Ferguson, will kick off the series at 5pm on July 5th with her renditions of country and soft rock. Later at 7pm, Doug Koyama will take the stage and captivate the audience with songs of life, love, peace and truth, yet by listening to his lyrics one would never know. He uses looping, a capella and improv to create music to the ears.

The series unfolds to reveal some of the musical talents of Williams Lake, the surrounding villages and countryside, and the province of BC. Acts include Horsefly duo Carmen and Dena who, on July 26th, will mesh their voices into beautiful harmonies while singing of love loss, self discovery and friendship. On August 9th, the members of Big Twang Daddy will gather together from the Cariboo landscape to create folk and rock that will get your toes tapping and your body moving. On July 19th, another Horsefly favourite, Pharis and Jason Romero, share their passion and adeptness for roots, folk, early country and old time music with beautiful harmonies. Local bluesy jazz sensation, My Wife’s Quartet takes the stage July 12th following a performance by an incredible Chilcotin youth, the Magical Jesaja. He has already taken the Quesnel Farmers Market by storm and will perform at ArtsWells on the August long weekend as a part of Potato Dreams.

A version of this play, Potato Dreams, will take the stage at 5pm on

August 2nd, featuring Likely Gold, a dramatic group of youths directed

by Venta Rutkauskas.

These young actors will open for the always entertaining, dance inspiring Maria in the Shower. This Eastside Vancouver foursome shifts with ease from uptempo swing to sensitive folk ballad, or energetic samba to subtle waltz. Prepare to dance up a sweat while taking in their captivating performance.

Mill Girl Follies, a collective of Can Can dancers from throughout the province, but mostly from Clinton, will take you back in time at 5pm on July 26th. Energetic and talented, they will make you want to join their troop. Other youth oriented openers include the local Uke Tuba Trio whose fun music is entertaining and reining from Hope, and on August 9th, the Ta Daa Lady brings her mesmerizing charms. Tap dancing, puppetry and singing are just aspects of her presentation.

To keep everyone on their toes, the August 16th concert format, the series finale, is a little bit different. Big Lake youth Sam Tudor

Premier takes in the Cariboo Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Decked out in her cowboy boots and bandanna, Premier Christy Clark was ready to take in the Williams Lake Stampede along with her son Hamish Saturday afternoon.

Clark started her day in the lakecity at the Rotary Club’s

pancake breakfast at Lakecity Ford, greeting people and helping serve breakfast.

“I am really looking forward to watching the tie down roping,” said Clark. ‘While my son is really excited about watching the bull riding events.”

After she was at the breakfast, she partici-

pated in the parade, riding in a wagon along with Hamish and was all smiles for all the parade watchers.

Later, she made her way to the rodeo where she came in on horseback.

“I do know how to ride a horse, and I got my cow boots on,”

said Clark. ‘Though if I called myself a cow girl I am sure I would get laughed at here.”

Clarke enjoyed the rodeo along side Mayor Kerry Cook, Chief Ann Louie and MLA Donna Barnett and later Saturday traveled out to Anahim Lake for a few days of vacation with Hamish.

Kids running for kids What started as just an idea between two young boys and their parents way back in October turned into something much bigger for the Kids running For Kids group who left town over the weekend.

The Kids Running For Kids group started out small, with just a core group of kids who wanted to run and in the process raise money for the BC Children’s Hospital.

Rya Enns and her two boys started the idea with the initial idea being to run relay style all the way to Vancouver and try to raise $25,000.

They blew past that goal and when they left Sunday morning they

were sitting at just over $50,000.

The group was initially going to leave for Vancouver right after the Stampede parade and camp along the way to Vancouver, once the group grew to larger numbers Enns said the plan changed a little bit.

‘We are going to be running in different communities along the way to Vancouver,” said Enns. “We re starting here, and then moving to 108 Mile and then Clinton.”

Enns said some of the other stops include Cache Creek, Lytton, Boston Bar, Harrison, Mission, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and will present a cheque to

Children’s Hospital on July 7th.

Enns also said the group is thrilled that the Stampede Association is donating half of the proceeds from ‘Tough Enough to Wear Pink’ to them, as well Enns also said The CN Miracle Match promotion is matching all KRFK’s donations from June 29th through July 7th.

“It’s just been more than we could have ever imagined,” said Enns.

Kids Running for Kids’ has set up an independent community event on the Children’s Hospital website for fundraising and that people can donate at www.bcchf.ca/kidsrunningforkids.

Popular arts festival returns with full line-up Horsefly’s incredibly popular summertime festival, Arts on the Fly, is going full steam ahead with its 7th annual festival.

This year the festival will be on July 13 and 14, with a full schedule Friday evening and all day Saturday. Growing from a single day festival in 2006, the festival now attracts audiences from across western Canada and beyond, with acts from around the world brought to this small, beautiful town.

Countdown to next year begins now!

Well, the dust has settled on the 86th annual Williams Lake Stampede. Our small city came alive with full grandstands for the rodeo performances, the streets were full of people to take in the Stampede parade and special guests turned up in the lakecity.

Premier Christy Clark along with her ten-year-old son Hamish were in town Saturday. Clark served breakfast and mingled with residents at

the Rotary pancake breakfast at Lakecity Ford, and then rode in a wagon along with Hamish in the parade before attending the second performance of the rodeo.

And of course rodeo fans were treated to the one and only Carey Price, who showed off his rodeo skills in team roping with partner Wade McNolty all four days of the Stampede.

It was fantastic to see he still has a place in his life for rodeo and his

hometown of Williams Lake.

Cowboys and cowgirls came not only from B.C. and Alberta, but all over the States and even as far away as New Zealand and Australia. It still is hard for me to comprehend traveling that far for a rodeo, but isn’t it just fantastic that Williams Lake has the opportunity to host tourists for big events like the Stampede. We can only hope they enjoyed their time here so much that

they can’t wait to come back.

Some of us who grew up in Williams Lake forget how wonderful of a place it really is and it takes the Stampede and special guests for us to remember how just amazing this place really is.

The four crazy funfilled days of Stampede weekend in the lakecity may be over, but that just means the countdown to next year can begin.

Voice your thoughts on our timber supply Earlier this year, the BC Special Committee on Timber Supply was formed due to the mid-term timber supply shortage and now the committee is looking for feedback from British Columbians.

Here in Williams Lake, timber supply play a direct role in the well being of our economy our livelihood about also the forests we recreate in.

Protection of oldgrowth forests, wildlife habitat and the environment as a whole will also be a focus on the agenda.

Considering a move from the current volume-based tenures to area-based tenures will also be included in the committee’s review as a potential way to increase the volume of harvest.

about the future of our forests and the forest industry and how that all looks on the ground in Williams Lake then you should attend this meeting and voice your concerns.

Ultimately it is the communities and its citizens who will make these decisions and who will have to live with the consequences of them for generations to come.

Always finding something to be grateful for They say all good things come to those who wait. I’m still waiting! And waiting and waiting! This is a test of faith I believe I have passed and should get an A plus.

“There is a force in the universe, which, if we permit it, will flow through us and provide miraculous results,” said Ghandi. Well in my case, the universe has not delivered and is the mother of all procrastinators. I’ve spent a small fortune on lottery tickets to no avail.

(I take offense on the comment, that lotteries are a tax on the stupid.)

Years roll by and I find myself still an old coot living off a pension.

I guess one has to simply be grateful for what one has, starting with the breath of life, the flowers, the fishing up in our neck of the

woods and nature’s more frivolous attempts at sunshine.

Hard to keep one’s gratitude index in double digits though when the car is now completely coated with mud, the pot holes have seriously offended my shocks and I’m on my third chipped windshield in four years. One more stone and it’s finished.

I am grateful for the two dandy dogs I have as pets and am a sucker for all those Youtube videos of animals being rescued or doing cute things. I am happy that I live in the Cariboo

and that I have some very fine neighbours that I can rely upon if needed. And then there is the odd circumstance which gives me great pleasure, such as the beginning of a new relationship with a loving companion, the realization that my health is still good despite my years and that I can still keep up more or less. (With emphasis on the latter.)

Well I try to keep positive after all. Since energy follows thought, it makes sense to think of what you want instead of thinking of

what you don’t want.

Negativity breeds negativity. As often said; its easier to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Frankly I find life just amazing and as far as I’m concerned, it’s all attitude of mind really. If you think and feel only good thoughts about life, the universe reflects back to you in like manner. No doubt, the further one goes against Divine principles, the all pervading laws of the universe, those intractable and essential guideposts to living the eternal life, one denies one’s divine self and the further

one plunges into darkness. “In the midst of my darkness I found the sun within myself,” said Albert Camus. Just my point.

To quote from Hamlet; “there is nothing neither good or bad but thinking makes it so.” Yeah?

Well its hard to keep being grateful for all this rain. We haven’t had a Spring this wet since 1971 apparently.

Or the dogs coming in with their muddy paws traipsing over everything. Yet, I guess it’s good for the garden and the crops. Hay production will double

come fall I am sure.

Finally, I would like to end with a comment left to us from Ralph Waldo Emerson; “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

So there you have it, we are far more than we think we are and far more capable too. So buck up, look around at what you have, take a moment to reflect on the good things in your life and give a smile of appreciation. For in many respects, you have it made. Now that’s something to be grateful for.

Stampede Parade 2012

Krista Gutknecht from BC hydro Power Smart team hands out information to parade spectators while dressed as a remote control. The BC Hydro Power Smart team has been seen out in the community educating children and parents on how they can save power.

With the Rockin' and Rollin theme and Morris Bates the Elvis Impersonator as the honorary parade marshal, there were many Elvis's to be seen during the parade Satuday morning just like this one here.

Terra Ridge's Elvis impersonator, Lucy Hauk, rolls through the parade in style Saturday morning. There were a number of different Elvis impersonators in the parade, but it was Hauk who was awarded Best Elvis Impersonator by the judges.

Stampede Parade results Every year the residents of Williams Lake are treated to a wonderful Stampede parade complete with clowns, floats, and awesome cars and trucks.

This year was no different, except with addition of a number of Elvis impersonators throughout the parade.

That was thanks to this year’s Rockin’ and Rollin’ theme, and the Best Elvis Impersonator Award was given to Lucy Hauk from Terra Ridge, which must have been a touch choice as they were lots of great Elvis’.

As for best themed entry, the Springhouse 4-H club

won for their 1950’s rockin’ and rollin’ themed float.

They received a cheque for $500 for their hard work.

The best float of the parade was entered in by Lakecity Ford and Quick Lane this year for their ‘Boys and their toys’ themed float.

The best overall youth entry came from Isabel Groundwater from Lakecity Ford.

There were tons of clowns, and different mascots in the parade with the overall best mascot award going to Dairy Queen.

The best special interest car or truck in the parade went to a 1956 Ford pick

up entered by Dog & Suds.

The best stock car entered went to Donny Kunka and #37 car, which he can be seen racing at Thunder Mountain Speedway over the summer.

The best classic car or truck was awarded to a 1951 Plymouth, while the best antique car or truck was awarded to the 1928 Dodge Bros, which was also the best overall auto entry.

There were thousands of people who lined the streets of downtown to watch the parade and thankfully the rain held out and kicked off a packed house for the Saturday afternoon rodeo performance.

He is very fearful and isn’t sure of loud noises or fast movements. Caramel is a very affectionate man, but is needing a quiet, calm home. It can take him a little bit to warm up to people but once he does, you can hardly hear over the sounds of his purring.

“Our main thing is ‘if we can’t find you, we can’t help you’,” said Bob Donker, a Williams Lake Lions Club member.

The Lions Club here in town are partnering with local fire departments in a reflective address signage project in an effort to assist local first responders and make sure everyone gets help if they need it as quickly as possible.

“It’s very hard to see addresses out on back roads, or along highways – take for example the road out to Horsefly, most of the driveways don’t have a (visible) address or they are parallel to the road making them difficult to see.”

Donker said the signs they are selling are to be installed perpendicular to the road and if residents need help

installing them it will be available.

“The signs are $15 each for one sided or $25 for double sided and that includes tax,” said Eleanor. “The proceeds are split between

(the Lions Club) and the local fire department.

There are order forms for the signs available at seven locations, Clarke’s General Store, 150 Mile Husky Lotto

Centre, Valley General Store in Likey, Burgess Plumbing, Cool Clear Water, Schickworks, and SpeedPro and must be filled out and dropped off with payment (cash or cheque

A group of Xeni' Gwentin people travel on horseback and in wagons along highway 20 into Williams Lake Friday afternoon, the group traveled all the way from Nehimah Valley in for the Stampede.

This is the second year that Chad Gilmer from New Start Roofing and Siding has donated a unique, custom-built doghouse to be raffled off for the SPCA. Last year raffle tickets for Chad’s doghouse brought in just under $800 for the local shelter.

Gilmer plans to make the donation an annual event and is a big supporter of the Williams Lake SPCA because it is a cause that is close to his animal-loving heart and a way for him to support his community.

“This magnificent dog abode will be the Grande prize for our yearly Paws for a Cause Raffle, said Williams Lake SPCA manager Liz Dighton.

“We wish to send out a huge Thank you to New Start Roofing for the donation of this wonderful house.”

Dighton said that raffle tickets are available at the local vet clinics, at Cool Clear Water, at Beaver Valley Feeds, Scotia Bank, Total Pet and Burgess Plumbing and Heating.

The raffle will be held at noon at the Paws for a Cause event in Boitanio Park in September.

Rosk managed to stay out of the pits the most and took first place in the main event.

John Haynes provides a heavy amount of smoke and managed to pop both his back tires while competing in the Smoke Show Friday night at Thunder Mountain. Haynes was the crowd favorite and was named the winner.

Thunder Mountain Crash to pass thrills fans While the cowboys were kicking up some dirt down at the Stampede grounds, racers were burning up rubber at Thunder Mountain Speedway Friday night for the annual Stampede weekend Crash-to-Pass.

There were 18 cars from all over the province participating in the different crash-to-pass events, including heat races and trophy dashes and then all 18 cars took to the track for the main event.

In the main event, all 18 cars were racing to finish a 100 laps first, and in the process causing as much damage as they could to the other drivers by crashing into them.

By lap 16, there were only four out of the 18 cars on the track as many

of the others were in the pits changing tires and working as fast as they could to get their car back out on the track.

For the rest of the race, cars were in and out of the pits trying to keep themselves in the race fixing what they could as fast as they could.

There were lots of crashes to keep the fans entertained, at one point car #42 from Agassiz, B.C. ended up on its roof, but driver Bill Koenders was okay and finished in third place.

Local driver, Carl Rosk in his truck #55 ended up avoiding most of the mayhem and completed his 100 laps first, while Quesnel driver Richard Davis finished in second.

During the night, there was also a smoke show where John

Haynes in his ford truck created the best smoke show, popping his back tires in the process,

according to the fans.

Saturday night also saw action in the Open Class Invitational and

in July races, where they partner with Heartland Toyota and collect toys to donate to the

Focus Midget car races.

Next up for Thunder Mountain Speedway is their annual Christmas

Salvation Army, the event is happening July 14.

Jeff Dimarco particpates in the Judo Club's throw-a-thon with club member Melissa Barcello at the end of March, Dimarco is heading to Toronto this weekend to compete in the Canadian Judo Nationals competition.

Local Judo Coach heading to Toronto Jeff DiMarco will travel to Toronto, Ontario to compete at the Canadian Judo National Championships on July 7th. DiMarco has been practicing Judo for twenty five years, two years of that was spent training in Japan which is where Judo originated. In addition to practicing judo, he has been coaching for twelve years. DiMarco has represented British Columbia nine times at National Championships and has competed in two World Masters Competitions that were held in Toronto and Brussels, Belgium. “I am looking forward to competing at Nationals. I’m in the master’s division

so I get to fight people my age, for a change” says DiMarco. “Hopefully my conditioning is up to snuff ” Judo is a self-paced martial art that can be practice at any level; whether participants want to join judo to get a great workout while meeting new people, or to compete provincially, nationally or even internationally.

DiMarco runs the Williams Lake Judo Club that is located at 360B North Mackenzie Avenue. Practices will resume in September.

Black Pepper and Balsamic Pork Chops It’s summer, a time when we should be out in the outdoors. We have so many places to see and visit in this very diverse Cariboo Chilcotin Coast. There will be a number of people who will be out camping with the family during the summer and I hope you get to visit the many outdoor places of interest in this vast country when you are camping or traveling.

Some times we get to caught up with the weather. Suck it up, buy some outdoor gear, like rain clothes and get out to enjoy one of over 5000 lakes in the Cariboo, no matter what the weather.

I’m taking my fishing gear, my rain clothes and I’m heading out to the lake even if the weather is not quite summery. I’m taking a good book along, in case I really have to spend some indoor time at the cottage.

Most of us like to cook simple comfort food in the summer and so this fits the bill.

Here’s a recipe for

the campsite, at the cottage or even at home.

Black Pepper and Balsamic Pork Chops for the Cariboo.

Four boneless centercut pork chops … about one-and onehalf pounds One-half teaspoon salt One-half teaspoon freshly ground black pepper One tbsp olive oil Five cloves garlic, thinly sliced One cup chopped onion One-quarter cup nonfat chicken broth One-half cup balsamic vinegar One teaspoon thyme Sprinkle the chops with salt and pepper.

Take control of a situation that arises, Leo, because right now it seems no one else is capable of handling the situation. You may prove to be an excellent leader.

Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, add the chops and cook 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

Transfer to a plate. Add the garlic and onion to the skillet and cook, stirring, 1 minute, add the broth, vinegar and thyme, and cook, stirring and scraping the bits up from the bottom of the pan, for 2 minutes, or until the liquidhas thickened to the consistency of syrup.

Return the chops to the skillet and turn them over once to completely coat them in the glaze. Drizzle

any glaze remaining in the pan, over the pork. Enjoy.
