Xat’Sull Heritage Village hosted it’s first cultural event of the 2012 season last Thursday complete with lunch, performances, tours, workshops, and arts and crafts.

The village is located right along the Fraser River, just 35 km north of Williams Lake and is complete with covered picnic area, teepees, sweat house, and an atmosphere where you can learn about other cultures.

Last Thursday, the village had visitors all the way from England as a rugby team who was passing through Williams Lake on their tour of Canada stopped by to enjoy the village.

The Xat’Sull Heritage Village is available for tours, and overnight stays from May to October and those interested in setting up a tour or stay can contact the village at 250-297-6502.

Community rallies in support of new Memory Garden Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor What was once an empty lot at the bottom of Carson Drive is no longer an empty lot, but the start of a beautiful community garden that is three years in the making.

Saturday saw the first of many work bees get the empty lot looking more like a garden during the official groundbreaking celebration for the aptly named Memory Garden.

"We had a huge group of people show up this morning, many of them Rayel’s (MacDonald) family and friends,” said Michelle Daymond, food action co-ordinator for the Food Policy Council, Saturday afternoon.

MacDonald’s family and friends came out to help with the garden that is located at the site where she was tragically

struck and killed by a vehicle in April.

“We approached the city about creating a permanent memorial for Rayel at the site and were directed to the Food Policy Council since they had leased the land,” said Doug Neufeld, who is spearheading the memorial project for MacDonald.

“They have been fantastic with the family and working with us.”

Neufeld said they plan on creating a memorial for MacDonald at the entrance of the garden, complete with a rock monument and granite benches.

"We are still fundraising for the cost of the memorial, and anyone who would like to donate can drop off donations to Rayel’s mom Andrea or at my laser clinic at 402 Borland St.,” Neufeld said.

“We were discussing the need for us to have a new logo, and the conversation went from

So far, Arty has been seen at the Children’s Festival, the Lakers Car Club’s Show and Shine, Daybreak Rotary's Stampede parade, and most recently Performances in the Park.

“We really wanted to increase community awareness for Art Walk so we can continue to grow,” Dye said. "Last year our number of merchants and artists was up by 20 per cent and I am sure the number

of walkers was higher as well.”

Arty also travelled to Quesnel for Billy Barker Days to draw in visitors from Quesnel to the Art Walk.

“We want to make this the best Art Walk yet – we have the most merchants and artists we’ve ever had with 45,” he said.

Dye has dived head first into organizing the Art Walk this year after closing down Borland Creek Brewing earlier this year to retire.

The official start date of the Art Walk is Aug. 7, where a tour of the merchants will start at noon.

“We are going to meet at Sears, and along with Arty, Mayor (Kerry) Cook and hopefully Mary Forbes and her new baby will lead the two-hour walk.”

Dye said this year's artists are mostly local and offer a wide range of artist abilities to showcase to art walkers.

“We have an audio video display, a leather worker, and a blacksmith who are all new this year,” he said. “As well as two artists of note – Harvey Overton, who was the first ever exhibit at the Station House Gallery, as well as the family of Hazel Henry, a longtime Cariboo resident, showing some of her paintings.”

Barnett confident in future of the South Cariboo Cariboo Chilcotin MLA Donna Barrett spoke at the Chamber of Commerce meeting last Thursday, declaring she was confident of the future of the Cariboo regarding mid- term timber supply.

“I think (Williams Lake and 100 Mile House) are in a better position because you have more than pine

forests. You have diversification,” she said.

Barnett said she is anticipating change as the special committee timber supply decides on their recommendations.

“In the next year I think you’ll see some changes, just from listening and talking with industry and the public,” she said. “For many

years we have known there is going to be, in the mid-term timber supply, some major change changes.”

Barnett said over the time period where the special committee met with communities they heard many people say that forestry isn’t alive, which she said frustrates many of the committee members.

“We all know that the City of Williams Lake was built on forestry. We know the Cariboo Chilcotin was built on forestry,” she said. “We know with the proper tools and support, and as long as we can keep forests healthy and continue to support the new second growth that there is a future in forestry in the

Cariboo Chilcotin.”

By the July 20 deadline, the committee had received more than 700 submissions from around the province, submissions Barnett described as very passionate.

One of things Barnett would like to see is regional and sub-regional resource boards, to put the consolation process back in place.

The Committee's report to the Legislative Assembly is due August 15, 2012.

RCMP still on the lookout for youth

POLICE SEARCH FOR ARSONIST A residence on Western Ave and Carson drive was the target of arson early Thursday morning.

Just before 2:00 am on July 26, a homeowner called police to report a fire to the garage at her residence on Western Ave near Carson Drive.

Moments before, a witness observed a male wearing black shorts, a

black shirt, and a red ball cap walk by carrying a Jerry can. This fire was intentionally set. The Williams Lake Fire Dept arrived to extinguish the fire. The garage suffered slight damage. If anyone has information on this crime, they are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-

BASEBALL BAT ASSAULT A man required hospitalization after being assaulted with a baseball ball early Thursday morning.

The Williams Lake RCMP say in the early

morning hours of July 26, three males assaulted another male with a baseball bat as he was walking down Second Avenue.

Sullivan said it was Sheri Rennie who brought the clinic to the group, and they all felt it was going to be a service to everyone.

Sullivan, Rennie, Donna-Marie Cyr, Kathy Lovell and Zora Vignjevic all participated in the clinic, learning not only how to go through various obstacles, but to develop deeper confidence between themselves and their horses.

Stock the lockers with Staples Staples is aiming to ‘Stock the Lockers" of local students this year their annual campaign. Their ‘Stock the Lockers’ campaign raises funds that provide school supplies to local students whose families might not otherwise be able to afford them. In 2011, community donations totaled over $4500 to this campaign and all the money raised was donated to School District 27.

"This year we want to do even better and provide even more families with the supplies they need. Our goal for this year is to help raise $6500 which will be used to purchase school supplies for the kids in our community,� said Natasha Lycett, Manager at the

Williams Lake Staples.

A significant number of students encounter economic challenges that restrict their ability to obtain the basic supplies they need. Staples cashiers will be actively collecting donations at check out until August 31st, and also be holding fundraising events such as BBQs. “One hundred per cent of the money raised in our community stays in our community and benefits our local kids,� Lycett said If you would like to contribute to "Stock the Lockers," please drop off cash donations to Staples and help us give students the tools they need to achieve and exceed both in school and in life.

Conspiracy Case at the Station House Gallery Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor A new show opens in the upper gallery of the Station House Gallery this week, and although many people will be looking for painting, drawings, or something along those lines that’s not what they are going to find.

Montreal artist Edwin Janzen has spent the last few weeks creating and conducting an investigation surrounding the activities of the local ground squirrels, the Columbian ground squirrels, and will set out his findings at the August show Conspiracy Case.

“The basic idea is that I am using the gallery as my headquarters as I operate an investigation into the criminal activities of the local Columbian ground squirrel population,” Janzen said.

He said the idea came from two places: from observing an infestation of ground squirrels while at the Banff Centre over the summer of 2009 and thinking it would be interesting to study their tunnel network and what kind of meaning that could come out of it, sociologically speaking; and

“I like to work in a variety of media and don’t really like to confine myself to just one thing, in art and in life in general,” Janzen said.

Janzen said the Station House is the first place he has conducted his investigation and he plans to bring his show to other places, perhaps internationally.

“With this show, I have the opportunity to show people something different,” he said. “It’s a comment on overaggressive police tactics, a critic on blanket

approach to policing and to today’s obsession with surveillance and security – a light one at that.”

Janzen said people can take what they like from the show, and if they want something deeper than photos, video and maps then it’s there.

“It was an element of life that everyone on campus knew about, but nobody really acknowledged,” he said.

“It made me want to do an art piece about the squirrels, their tunnels, and their potential con-

spiracies.”

For the month of August, people can stop by the gallery to take a look at Janzen’s findings.

“I am going to have lots of photographs, footage, and maps of their underground tunnel networks,” he said.

“So far the response from people has been varied.”

Summer’s half over – get out and enjoy the sun I can honestly say I have had one of the best summers this year and it’s only half over.

Thanks to the stellar summer weather the Cariboo received in July, I am sporting a pretty decent tan, and fond memories of camping and hanging out at the lake to last me into next summer.

This year because of working as a reporter and being out covering events instead of hiding in an air-conditioned retail store all summer I

have colour – which is nice going into fall.

For the past four weeks, the sun has been out and the question of shorts or not didn’t cross my mind every morning as it has in summer’s past. I don’t know where this weather was last year, but I sure am glad (as I am sure everyone else is) that is decided to show up this year.

I sure hope the rest of the Cariboo has had the opportunity to soak in some of the

sun, because today is August 1 and before we know it September will be here and all you’ll be left with is longing for summer time months to return.

When I was a kid growing up here, the summer seemed to last forever and the days seemed to always be warm – maybe I was just young and warm or not it was still summer time.

But one thing is for sure; my summertime fun memories are not

just from my childhood anymore, This summer I was able to combine work with enjoying the sun, which to me is the best of both worlds – getting paid to be out in the sun.

That’s something I could use to.

Now that August is here, I suggest you make time for some summertime fun because before we know the leaves will be changing colour and September will be upon us.

Support our Canadian athletes Unless you live under a rock, you know that the Summer Olympics are going on in London for the next week or so.

Whether you choose to get caught up in Canadian pride or not doesn’t change the fact that the Olympics are the big topic right now.

I remember as a child I always hated how the

Summer Olympics took over every channel on TV, but now I understand what a big deal the Olympics are to our country.

It’s a time where these athletes have the chance to show the world their skill and ability in their chosen sport.

It takes years of practice, determination and

hard work to make it the world’s biggest sport’s stage.

Not everyone can travel all the way to wherever the Olympics are being hosted, this year London. That’s why it is so great that all the TV station cover so many of the events, making us in Canada feel like we’re there and

joining in the celebrations as Canadians bring home medals.

So even though you may miss your regular scheduled program, get a little caught up in the Olympics – they only happen every four years.

Let’s celebrate as Canada’s athletes show the world what they are made of.

The time to lean on community is upon us In the light of our emerging reality, there is the creation of bioregionally decentralized, compassionate systems and processes throughout the world. A grass roots bottom-up revolution is occurring and while still in its formative stages, it is allowing new ways of self governance and self reliance, particularly as to food security. This movement is about to break out big time, the result of which will change forever the way we think about reliance on authority other than our own. Parallel to this, are so-called Ecovillages, intentional communities based on agro-ecological farming techniques with the goal of becoming more socially, economically and ecologically sustainable.

We are now witnessing the arrival of an old

paradigm arising with the need to keep local economies intact and sustainable. It is also becoming apparent, that large scale industrial agriculture is falling behind and in some cases, failing to deliver on promises made.

Countering this are the small, local and organic farms on the rise, as is the proliferation of farmer’s markets, CSA’s (Community S u p p o r t e d Agriculture), the trend to buy local, fair

trade and the switch to organic produce.

(The organic market is increasing at approximately 20% per year.)

We are no doubt entering a time of community with the focus on serving the whole rather than the individual. This is a very old system now ripe for revival. Those with solutions or a desire to help are drawn by synchronicity to the collective will and in this way, more synergy is created. The situation gains momentum growing and expanding to meet the similar needs of the many and building an excitement that sustains the process as many are helped. The challenge for all is the shift from a paradigm of ‘me first’ and non sharing, to one of cooperation and collaboration. A community sinks or

swims together.Now it appears, we are in for hard times once again with the fast approaching financial depression leading to the taking of personal responsibility and people learning to depend on each other.

For this in some ways, we should be thankful that a more resourceful population will emerge. Also allowing for new ways of doing business, more direct, more real, more honest and more local. And with heart, integrity and fortitude.

So, given the many wayward directions humanity is going and the outcome of the economic worldwide disaster now unfolding, it will be a heavy load ahead. Much will soon be made of the local and supportive elements in society to adhere to the crisis by allowing new ways

of being and doing business. LETS (local exchange and trade) programs are starting to take root, with people sharing and trading time and skills for work and goods needed. Collaboration is the key. This is underway in some areas and already functions as an underground economy. Saltspring Island in B.C. and Whitbey Island in Washington state, have their own bankable currency based on a LETS type of system. Taking control, relying on local banking institutions set up that defy big banks by building up local economies, allow all citizens to participate and gain from. This is bringing power back to the people.

In terms of food security, we need to re-localize production of goods and services.

We have been divorced from our source of food and rely instead on the local supermarket to deliver. These stores have only a one day supply and depend on deliveries daily. Any food crisis south of the border, (now likely immanent), will mean that many of the trucks carrying food from California and other states, will simply cease to arrive. Given that B.C. imports 60% of its food, puts our province in a very vulnerable position. People may soon be forced to grow their own food due to inevitable shortages and price rises.

One good suggestion put forth, is to build a coalition of local groups, such as the various regional sustainability committees, cattlemen’s/ farmer’s associations, conservation groups,

churches etc. to create a broad base of expertise and allow a concerted effort among these groups to take the lead, influence government policy and take local matters into their own hands. Solutions become more inventive and creative when multiple minds are focused on positive outcomes.

Those communities that foresee the inevitable and provide for it by laying the groundwork for sustained community relief programs, will be in a superior position to deal with the events unfolding. Post crisis management is always much harder on the individual constituencies than preparedness.

The old adage that ‘failing to prepare, is preparing to fail’, holds true. This concern is highly relevant and cannot be put off.

Many have much to ponder with pipeline proposal Are you in favour of the Enbridge pipeline proposal? If you are in favour of the pipeline, why? Arguments on the ‘yes’ side of the proposal are generally based on the economic benefits that would help the bottom line for the three western provinces and of course the feds would take a fair share. No matter what the Premiers of BC and Alberta say at this point regarding the pipeline, it’s the

federal Conservative Government that has the final say.

There is a current ongoing environmental federal review panel on the Enbridge proposal.

First Nations along the pipeline route to Kitimat and other aboriginals are protesting the oil delivery line as it runs along some traditional land.

The Federal NDP and those of the same stripe in BC are also against the pipeline and they also oppose the New Prosperity mine near Williams Lake.

The BC Liberals are in favour of the oil delivery line but with conditions attached

and they suggest that legal requirements regarding aboriginal and treaty rights are addressed and they will be provided with the opportunity, information and resources necessary to participate and benefit from the heavy oil project.

The question I have for those who side with Enbridge, will there be enough protection of the land where the line will cross and will there be enough remediation efforts should a problem My query for those who do not like the pipeline, how will the oil be transported to the lucrative Chinese market without it? Or would you like it to

stay in the ground and we get our oil from elsewhere?

Lots of questions for Mr Harper and his government as they debate the pros and cons of the Enbridge proposal and then make a final ruling, hopefully, that will work for the economy and the environment.

There is a long weekend ahead and I suspect many people will be hitting the road to visit friends, or relatives, or go camping in the great outdoors.

Please drive with a whole lot of care and caution.

Wright who retired earlier this year, and is sure to face many challenges in the job with shrinking enrollment, tightening budgets and a newly elected Board of Trustees set to announce a new long term plan for the district this fall which may include school closures.

Thiessen's relationship with the district goes as far back as when he was an elementary student, and started professionally when he first began working for the School District in 1985 as a summer student in the Maintenance Department on the summer custodial crew.

Ten years later, in 1995, after completing his undergraduate degree at Trinity Western and his Intermediate Education degree at UBC he returned to begin his teaching career at Horsefly Junior Secondary School.

“I grew up in Williams Lake and the Cariboo Chilcotin school district is near and dear to my heart,” said Thiessen. “This is a chance to really be

Thiessen has been a teacher, principal, viceprincipal, district principal and more recently has been back in the classroom for the past year, something he said he is going to miss.

“I love interacting with students on a day-to-day basis and really being a major part of their lives for 10 months,” he said. “I think my recent time in the classroom is going

to give me a fresh perspective going forward into district leadership.”

Also on his resume is a two-year stint in Rwanda where Thiessen was the Program Director for the Wellspring Foundation for Education. It was there where Thiessen was reminded of the true value and importance of education in society.

“We are so fortunate to have education as the centerpiece of young lives in the developed world,” he said. “Our lives are enriched because of it, and not everyone in the world receives the same quality of education that our students do.”

A new way of education being promoted in B.C. is twentyfirst century learning.

According to Thiessen, that method is what good teaching and learning should look like. “(Twenty-first century learning) to me is paying careful attention to each of the learners' needs in your class and helping them progress them at their own rate,” said Thiessen.

“Teachers are always going to play a really important part in education. Our district as a whole will continue to move in that direction.

I think we will hopefully improve what we do in classrooms already.”

Also looking into the future are the possibilities of local school closures, decisions Thiessen said will be extremely difficult.

“If that is the case, (closures) will be done for the good of all schools in the district, and a way for the district to move forward, but those decisions will not be taken lightly and will be extremely difficult,” said Thiessen.

Fresh off from a three-week holiday road trip to California with his wife Tracey and four children, Thiessen said he is ready to step into his new role as Superintendent.

“I am very passionate about leadership and working alongside other leaders,” he said.

“I am very excited about this opportunity.”

B.C. Water Ski provincials bring skiers to Chimney Lake Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor The sun was out and the water warm for the 2012 Water Ski & Wakeboard British Columbia Water Ski Provincials at Chimney Lake over the weekend.

Local water ski superstar Conley Pinette didn’t disappoint on home territory – the tournament was held right in front of the Pinettes' cabin, and the Pinettes played host to the 50 water skiers.

“It was a great weekend,” Conley said.

There were around 50 skiers ranging from six-year-old Lucas Pinnete all the way up to Cliff Moffat, who was the lone skier in the Mens 70-74 division.

Conley said he had rough weather for his slalom run Saturday morning, and his mom Leigh said it did pour rain while he was out, but he still took first place in boys 3 for 14 and under.

“I jumped 106 feet today,” Conley said on Saturday. "But

I did jump 112 feet last night.”

He took first place in jump, and to finish the day off he finished with 2,420 points to take first place in tricks as well.

In the junior women’s, Rachel Maj took her very first jump off the ramp ever, and on her third attempt was able to ski away with a 25-foot jump.

In tricks, Dawson Foreman was able to not only get up on his ski, which he only just learned two days previous, but he scored some points in the process.

The main event for day two was the money jump, where the top 10 jumpers from Saturday were paired up and combined their jumps for a grand total – those with the farthest combined distance won $500.

The teams were matched number 1 with 10, 2 with 9 and so on and, with Conley’s 106-foot jump and his father Parnell Pinette’s 126-foot jump, they were matched up for the money jump.

“We did pretty good,” Parnell said of the money jump.

"Conley jumped around 110 feet and I jumped about 125 feet.”

They ended up in second place, taking away $400. The top jumpers for the money jump were 16-year-old Jed Leech, who is currently the top-rated 16-year-old water skier in Canada, and Dick Horwood, who took the $500 cash prize.

At the end of day two, Parnell thanked everyone for coming and the sponsors who made the event possible.
