Identity of climber confirmed A 108 Mile Ranch man died August 8 in a mountaineering incident according to the BC Coroners Service.

Jon Howard Sortome, 52, died in the incident in Glacier National Park near Golden, BC last week.

Sortome and his adult son had been attempting an ascent on the Mount Rogers glacier when they encountered severe weather conditions. They fell a significant distance down the mountain.

Sortome's body was recovered on August 9.

Bear dumped with paws removed Conservation officers are investigating an incident out west this summer where a black bear was found dead, with its paws cut off and some of its organs possibly removed.

The carcass was found at the Riske Creek dump site off of Highway 20 Tuesday,

July 17.

Conservation officer Jeff Piwek said shooting a bear out of season as well as possessing parts of dead wildlife is illegal in British Columbia and the Conservation Officer Service is currently looking into the matter.

Piwek said how or

why the bear was killed is unknown at this time.

Anyone with information regarding the bear is encouraged to contact the Conservation Officer Service (COS).

The cause of the fire is not yet known, however arson is suspected and surveillance camera data is currently being reviewed. If anyone has information on

Share sheds across the CRD are provided for the reuse of household items, which reduces landfill mate-

Busy week for lakecity RCMP The Williams Lake RCMP was kept busy with auto thefts and other incidents over the weekend. They responded to approximately 80 calls for service, many of them related to auto theft.

On Thursday morning, the RCMP responded to a complaint of a theft of a Dodge pickup truck from the Wildwood area. The vehicle was stolen some time during the night from the owner’s driveway.

There were no suspects, witnesses, and no evidence. The truck was later located on Frizzi Road near the river bottom trail. The vehicle had extensive damage to it. No suspects were found at the scene and the matter is still under investigation.

Later that same morning, the RCMP were called to Frizzi Road to a report of two stolen vehicles on the road and reports of a possible collision. When the officers arrived, one of the vehicles was on its side on Frizzi road, with the ignition punched out. The owner stated that he had last seen the vehicle the previous night. No suspects, witnesses or evidence at this time. Incident is still under investigation.

Police also responded to a report of a stolen vehicle where a Black Dodge Dakota pickup had been stolen from the owner's home sometime overnight on Thursday. The vehicle was later located in the parking lot of Marshals 150 Mile Store. No suspects have been identified and the matter is still under investigation.

On Saturday, the RCMP received a complaint that a quantity of fishing gear and gas being stolen from a dock on Horsefly Lake Landing. No suspects have been identified in

theft at this time.

Also on Saturday, the RCMP received another report of a stolen vehicle. The owner reported his blue 1992 Jeep Cherokee had been stolen overnight.

The owner found the vehicle gone in the morning and there was broken glass on the driver’s side.

The Jeep had large off-road tires and a roof rack.

A witness stated that the jeep was last seen driving away at around midnight. There are no suspects at this time and the matter is still under investigation.

On Sunday the

RCMP received a residence alarm complaint on Litzenburg Crescent.

Police attended to find that the exterior window by the kitchen was open, with the screen removed. The police were unable to determine if anything was stolen during the break in and the matter is still under investigation.

The Williams Lake RCMP strongly encourages anyone who observes any suspicious activity or has information concerning any thefts to call the Williams lake Detachment or Crimestoppers.

Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Kim Culbert started her affair with photography back in 2000 when she was given an old SLR camera from her dad and taught herself how to use it.

Now she has a collection of nine different cameras, and runs her own photography business called Kim Culbert Photography, specializing in portraits.

“My business focus is on portraits of families, newborns, children and the occasional wedding, but I still have a love for photographing landscapes and florals, which is where I started,” she said.

Culbert’s landscape photos from the Cariboo-Chilcotin are currently on display in the Art Walk at the CRD Williams Lake Library, something she

said just happened by accident.

“My good friend Nathan Hornby is dating Caroline Derksen, the librarian at the Library, and they were recently down visiting,” said Culbert, who lives in Coquitlam with her husband and children.

“She started pointing out different photos saying she liked them and all the ones she liked were taken in the Chilcotin.”

Culbert said Derksen told her about Art Walk and that the library was looking for an artist and asked her to be it.

“I was flattered and immediately said yes,” she said. “I have 12 photos on display, four are available for purchase and the others are on loan.”

Serenity Gardens is located in the Williams Lake Cemetery, and is a cremation garden – a space with different options for family members.

“Currently there are three column bariums – two pillars and a wall, as well as a scattering garden,” said Ron Malmas, managing director of Compassionate Care Funeral Home. “It’s a space for the cremation remains of loved ones, full of choices on how to honour the loved ones.”

Another project Culbert and her husband Fraser are working on is putting together a book of her photos and his poetry.

“It’s something we just thought of in the last year or so that we wanted to do just for us,” said Culbert. “But the more people we told about the more interest there was in others wanting to have a copy too so we are looking to get a book published and the library here

Culbert said she is thrilled and honoured to be apart of this year’s Art Walk, her very first in such an event, and she extends her thanks to everyone who made it possible.

“Kudos to the organizers – it’s a big event and they have done a great job putting it on,” she said.

Malmas said the idea for the garden came from the increasing trend of cremation across Canada and North

America, and such spaces for the remains springing up.

“We approached city council with our ideas, and they were very receptive,” he said.

“It took a number of years, but I am thrilled we have finally opened the garden.”

He said the atmosphere they were trying to achieve was peaceful and park-like, and the space is complete with soothing music 24/7, lights at night, the log gazebo, and the column bariums in a beautiful garden setting.

“I think the space turned out beautifully,” said Shirley Pat-Gale, a Rotary member, “It’s really important to take care of the whole cycle of life of a community and this was one way to give back to the community.”

Why horses need their hooves pampered On the surface, it seems almost foolish that a horse should be shod with a hard, metal disk on each of its hooves.

After all, if animals were meant to wear shoes wouldn’t we see cheetahs wearing sneakers or dogs donning boots?

Although it may seem odd, horseshoes provide protection to working horses.

Working horses are those that are asked to carry riders, pull farm equipment and do different tasks that a wild horse does not. There are distinct differences between domesticated working horses and their wild counterparts, which is why domestic horses are fitted with shoes.

Reporter says farewell Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Well, after an eventful 14 months as a young reporter in the lakecity, it is time for me to move on to my next adventure. I have decided to complete my schooling to get a degree in communications majoring in journalism and will begin my studies at Mount Royal University in Calgary in just a couple of weeks.

As I worked on the paper this past week, it was tough to comprehend that it was my last one. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at the Cariboo Advisor and have learned so much along the way. In the last few weeks I have really noticed how passionate I am about the paper, how it looks, what’s in it, and with our new facebook page I never thought I would get so excited over a few ‘likes’, but I have and it’s because this paper has been a huge part of my life over the past 14 months and it’s going to be hard to leave it behind.

Not only have I really grown as a reporter and journalist, but I have had the opportunity to

see my hometown in a different light.

When I left town as a bright-eyed 20 year-old itching for something more, something exciting, I had no idea what I was leaving behind. I couldn’t wait to leave the puddle in the dust and start new in the big city.

This go around I am a little sadder about leaving, I have met some incredible people who truly love this little city and want nothing but the best for it.

I have met people who have spent their own personal time to get programs, clubs, and events off the ground and to help the community grow stronger.

I have met politicians who love this town and want big things for its future.

Over the past year and a bit I had the chance to go to lots of events that before I had no idea were even happening.

Some highlights included discovering the community of Horsefly, heading out west to Churn Creek, covering different sporting events like the Kids Sport Classic,

soccer tournaments/ camps and of course the famous Williams Lake Stampede, which I had front row seats for. I also had the chance to have a ride in a tiny three person 1941 Cessna airplane, tag along for the Cariboo-Chilcotin Fire Centre’s control burn in Becher’s Prairie, and meet the likes of Carey Price, Angus Reid and Travis Lulay, Premier Christy Clark, and NDP leader Adrian Dix. It has been an amazing year that I will never forget besides professionally it being memorable, but personally as well.

My granddad, Richard Taylor, and I spent quality time together whether it be at family dinners, a morning tea I just dropped by for, interviewing for the Remembrance Day themed story I wrote about his time in Air Force, or a friendly game of crib over my time back in Williams Lake. All of these small, and what seemed like insignificant moments are now engrained in my memory because it ended up being my last year with granddad because he lost his battle

with cancer this past May. I also had the chance to reconnect with my little brother who was really just a kid when I left, and now as a young adult we have bonded over similar interests.

It’s going to be a lot harder to leave my family as a 25-year-old woman because I have made genuine connections with my cousins, aunts, uncles, brother, sister and parents. I am not itching to leave them behind and have my own independent life (well, I am looking forward to that just a little).

What I am looking forward to is moving forward in my life; achieving the goals I have set for myself and embracing my new chapter in my life.

I am going to miss my Cariboo Advisor family dearly, as well as all the people I have met, and of course I am going to miss my own family.

It’s time to move on to the next chapter and jump in with both feet just like I did a year ago when I started the job as the reporter for the Advisor.

What would you be if you could live your life over?

If I could live my life over I would like to be a a dancer, a singer, a pilot with my own plane, a professional scuba diver and hang out at the Great Barrier Reef, an actor on stage in a wonderful performance, a novelist and a gourmet chef. And that’s just for starters. While we strive to accomplish our goals, we only have so much time as a life lived. We can choose to use it wisely or spend it foolishly. Do we achieve what we set out to achieve, or does our life circumstance get in the way? Events occur unexpectedly and throw us off course.

Stay the course they say. For me, to embrace life fully, with enthusiasm, and hopefully with grace, to experience all that we can, is the ultimate success in

a life well lived.

So where did we go in life? Are we where we wanted to be? Are we directed by a higher source of being, our soul self? Do we change our fate by wrongful choices, missed opportunities or shallow reactions to events? (Only to regret our behavior after the fact.) I believe we know at heart the right course of action, if we are centered in self, listen to our inner voice, follow our true

passions and have a firm grip on our talents. Yes talents, as we are all gifted and often in many ways.

“Life isn’t about finding yourself, its about creating yourself ”, to quote George Bernard Shaw.

My younger sister had a yen to be a dancer, so my mother enrolled her in a tap dancing class. Which for sis, only lasted one lesson. She dropped out, couldn’t handle the discipline. The dancing career no doubt a whim? Anyway, my mother went to get her money back but the instructor wouldn’t come up with it. “After all, a contract is a contract”.; he said. So my mother took the lessons herself, learned how to tap dance and loved it. She was good at it too. I even went

to her recital among a myriad of little girls.

Now, it would never have occurred to her to do such a thing given a choice and brought up as she was in an era of restriction, cultural prejudice and sense of personal limitation.

In my case, I had a yen too, to be a writer and as well as becoming a filmmaker among other things, I brought into myself a sense of inferiority and delusion that I was not trained as a writer and was really not a wordsmith but a creator of images.

How wrong was I and it wasn’t until I reached my 70’s that I took the plunge became a true writer at heart and guess what? I love it, its become my thing.

To me, easy and productive. It doesn’t cost anything other than my time and inclina-

tion and its immediately satisfying as creative output. The talent, the gift, (if I may be so immodest), is there. It was always there but tucked away behind a sense of what was expected of me and the limitations of a small town boy from a working class background, Herewith, one of my favourite quotes from the I Ching, the great Chinese book of divination. “The destinies of men are subject to immutable laws that must fulfill themselves.

But man has it in his power to shape his fate, according as his behaviour exposes him to the influence of benevolent or destructive forces.”

People live within the frontier of their awareness of life and have the potential to push back that frontier or remain secure

within it. “Life shrinks or expands according to one’s courage”; said Mother Theresa . So it is fear and disbelief that holds us back.

Doubts too slow us down, one tends to hesitate if one is doubtful. Doubts of course, being the expression in our minds of all possible realities. Do we accept the worst case scenario or the best?

Fear restricts, while love expands and only love conquers every fear.

Then there is that great human disease called denial. Denial of truth, denial of self and the lack of self acceptance, self love. I believe that when one contemplates one’s best interests (and that of others along with it), that the best path to self fulfillment comes from loving self and all oth-

ers along the way. Then we find that things just harmonize and our life serves up the truth of who we are and what we are to do. Herewith is an apt thought left to us from Ralph Waldo Emerson; “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”

So don’t buy into limitation, when they tell you; “you can’t do that,” question their authority. For it is our God-given right to live a life of abundance and joy. A life of creative expression. A life in harmony with each other and the all of existence. When we are connected to our true source of being, we are unlimited. So there you have it, we are far more than we think we are and far more capable too. Break out!

Way to go Canada, well done I think our country showed great spirit and determination in the London Olympics.

We had some nice surprises and of course some disappointments, like the infamous soccer game with United States. Poor refereeing for that calibre of sports.

Our men and women performed well on the world stage and for sixteen days we watched TV religiously to see our Canadian athletes and those from other countries compete.

I love the patriotism that explodes when the Olympic games are taking place.

Art Walk for children Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor For the first time ever, the Williams Lake Art Walk will have a special edition to highlight the artist abilities of some of our young artists in town.

The Child Development Centre’s preschool along with the Boys and Girls Club and the Cariboo Regional District Williams Lake Library’s Summer Reading Program will have children’s artwork on display Thursday August 16 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Spirit Square downtown.

“The featured artwork are self-portraits from my preschool classes,” said Michelle Daymond, CDC preschool teacher. “I gave them a black Sharpie and asked them to draw themselves – and they turned out fantastic.”

Daymond said Nancy Gale and Willie Dye saw the 45 preschool selfportraits and they both agreed they were too fantastic not to show them to the community.

“Not all children have the words to describe the world around them, but art is a way for the children to express themselves,” said Daymond.

“And it’s not just painting or drawing but all types of art.”

Daymond said she hopes this is the first year of many children’s art shows, and she is just excited to be able to share her students’ work with the community.

“I am so proud of my students and their work,” she said. “It’s a way to show the community what three-yearolds are capable of.”

Third Annual Smoke on the Water It was a nice day for a morning swim as 19 swimmers took to Chimney Lake for the third annual Smoke on the Water open water races Sunday morning.

There were three distances to choose from, with the most popular being the two longer races.

Eight swimmers swam the three km race as well as the 1500 km race, while three swimmers swam the 750 m race.

Ten-year-old Lindsay Sanford was the fastest in the 750 m race, she finished in 18:40, Wayne Rich finished

In the 1500 m race, Garnett Currie from Quesnel finished in a record time of 25:08 taking first in his age category as well as first overall.

Natasha Hansen from Quesenl finished in a close second with a time of 26:03, Geneva Gordon finished with a time of 28:31, followed

by Kyleigh Williamson with a time of 28:53, Billy Longland finished with a time of 31:12, Jennifer Anderson finished in 35:27, Deena Williamson finished

in 35:27, and Maia Vitoratos finished in 36:04.

In the three km race the big winner was 20-year old Victoria Reid, who has been in Williams Lake since May, but did most of her swimming well living in Duncan, BC. She finished in a record time of just 46:14. She is currently going to Stony Brook University in New York on a swimming scholarship.

The five-day camp will conclude this Friday highlighted with a visit from the Williams Lake Fire Department. The fire truck is scheduled to arrive at 11am Friday to cool off the soccer players and that will be followed by a B-B-Q lunch at noon.

All participants are welcome to register for the camp for any or all of the remaining three days. The camp runs from 9:30am to noon.

Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The Champions Soccer Camp kicked off this Monday morning at Marie Sharpe Elementary field. The camp is free and offered to youth ages 5-12. “It’s about learning new skills and hopefully giving the kids a hobby that they can stick with and keep playing for years to come,� said organizer Ryan Penner. “We offer this camp free because we want it to be accessible for everyone and the motto is that every kid is a champion.�

The annual camp, which was started back in 2000, was resurrected this year after a two year hiatus. Due to the terrible smoke from the wildfires in the summer of 2010 the camp was called off and last year was cancelled due to organizational difficulties.

An award-winning celebrity interior designer, textile designer and design psychology expert, Ellis’s work is everywhere, from television (as a featured designer on TLC’s “Clean Sweep,” HGTV’s “Takeover My Makeover,” and Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Orange County” as well as guest spots on NBC, CBS and ABC) and the Web (as eHow. com’s interior design expert) to print media (as the monthly design advice columnist for the Orange County Gazette). Known for her love of flowers and floral design, Ellis also serves as a spokesperson for the Society of American Florists.

For Ellis, spring offers endless opportunities to update and refresh interior spaces with touches of color.

While she always recommends starting with a neutral foundation that includes walls and major pieces of furniture in shades of white, beige or brown, Ellis loves to add seasonal flourishes by changing up accents and accessories.

“With a neutral

foundation,” explains Ellis, “you don’t have to invest a lot of time or money to refresh. Once you have the basics -those pieces of furniture that you absolutely love and will stand the test of time -- the sky’s the limit in terms of changing accents such as valances, pillows, rugs, candle holders -- even the matting on a picture. A neutral foundation opens the door to a new look with minimal changes.”

According to Ellis, one of the best -- and easiest -- ways to add seasonal color and refresh a living space is with fresh flowers displayed in a variety of containers. Fresh flowers not only enliven a room and bring in the sights and scents of the outdoors, they are perfect for playing up color and color combinations.

“A lot of people are afraid of color in their decor, so a less scary way of introducing color is with flowers and vases,” Ellis notes. “Fresh flowers can go with any type of decor and generally last as long as your mood, so there are endless opportunities to experiment without making a longterm commitment.”

Decorating with flowers begins with choosing a container that is in

sync with the season and the style of your home, counsels Ellis.

“There are so many container options for every type of decor,” Ellis says. “If your home leans toward country, think about using old decanters, tins or even wooden boxes. For contemporary homes, glass vases with clean lines work best. And for traditional homes, go with urns or ornate vases.”

The same principal applies to the flowers themselves. Mixed flowers tend to be more traditional; bunches of local flowers lend a homey, just-picked quality to a casual or country home; and monochromatic arrangements ooze modern. The key, notes Ellis, is to pair flowers with both their containers and the indoor environment in which they will be seen.

Next comes color.

While Ellis leans toward monochromatic arrangements of white flowers -- stargazers, lilies, roses and orchids are among her personal favorites -she nevertheless appreciates the “pop” of color that can be achieved with bolder blossoms.

When choosing flowers for a particular spot or room, Ellis advises looking at complementary colors -- those that

Summer Tomato with Balsamic Vinegar 8 tomatoes, cored and cut into chunks 1 handful spinach leaves 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 3 large garlic cloves finely chopped 1 tsp fresh oregano 1 tsp fresh chopped basil freshly ground pepper...I also added a pinch of ground sea salt.

Mix this all together gently and serve. A little cheese might also be nice with this dish.

‘This trike won best Custom recently in the Classic Car Show in Abbotsford,” said Shaw.

Also in the show and shine was the 1972 Mercedes Benz that the Lakers Car Club is currently selling raffle tickets for.

‘Tickets are five for $1 or three for $10,” said Potter. ‘The draw date is September 24.”

Potter said Canadian Tire and Brian Stefan were absolutely fantastic, and the car club looks forward to next year.

Wayne Potter, president of the Lakers Car Club, said their 9th annual Show and Shine with Canadian Tire was a huge success.

“It was our biggest show yet,” he said. “We had 52 entries of cars, and bikes.”

One of the bike entries came from John Shaw who had his custom made 2011 V8 Trike on display.

“Thirty years ago I had a drawing of this trike and it was just recently built for me by Mart McDonald.”

McDonald and Shaw have plans to build another trike in the near future
