It’s a wrap Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The 54th Annual Williams Lake District 4-H Show and Sale got underway Friday and wraps up today at the Williams Lake Stockyards with the awards presentations.

After months of hard work, Cariboo Chilcotin youth were finally able to proudly display the fruits of their labors as a variety of sheep, pigs, rabbits, and cows were on display.

The itinerary for today is as follows: At 4:30 p.m. will be the Parade of Champions followed by the 5 p.m.

Opening Ceremony. At 5:15 p.m. will be the Sales Opening Words and a Cash Award Presentation by Save on Foods and the Williamson Memorial Steer will be presented by Pat Moortele.

The actual sale kicks off at 5:30 p.m.

Tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. will be tear down day as the major barn destruction and clean-up of the entire stockyard grounds takes place.

B.C. 4-H features more than 2,350 youths across the province and has been around for over 95 years. The program helps to develop community awareness, leadership abilities, and new skills. There are over 24 different projects to choose from in four different age categories ranging from six to 21.

Lakecity children raise $100K for charity Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor Close to $100,000 was raised and donated to BC Children’s Hospital (BCCH) Foundation through the Kids Running For Kids program.

The KRFK raised $52,000 by the time they left Williams Lake on July 1 to journey to Vancouver Children’s Hospital. For every dollar raised from that point on the CN Miracle Match agreed to double, a total which is now approaching six figures.

In recognition of their efforts a celebration was held Thursday, August 16 as Mayor Kerry Cook and Williams Lake City Council hosted a BBQ to help raise more funds for the BCCH in appreciation of the Kids Running for Kids.

All members of the community were invited to attend the event in which the Kids Running for Kids participants were presented with a certificate of appreciation form the Mayor and Council.

Stephen Forgacs, Di re c t o r of Communications for BCCH was also on hand to thank the children and award them a certificate.

Prior to the BBQ the participants met at 5pm at Boitanio Park for a group photo featuring representatives from major sponsors Brandt Tractor and Caribou Ski Source for Sports.

Brand Tractor made a cheque presentation for $5,000, which paid for Adidas tracksuits for the participants. Tom Wong of Caribou Ski donated Adidas shirts, shorts, socks and hats for participants.

The runners then completed their final run of the event, a twokilometer trek through downtown.

When organizer Rya Enns first envisioned the idea of running to raise funds she never in her wildest dreams imagined how successful it would be.

“Last summer I saw on TV that a family from Vernon ran to Vancouver to raise money for the Terry Fox Foundation. I was training for my first half marathon and in

“There was a good core of us from Mountview that we had but after we published our story in the local newspapers through word of mouth we had a lot of kids who wanted to be a part of it,” said Enns.

The KRFK saw the 65 youth stop in a number of communities between Williams Lake and Vancouver where each would try to run for a minimum of five kms per day. The event kicked off Saturday, July 30 at the kids took part in the parade and had local hockey star Carey Price aboard their float.

They then did their first group run around the Williams Lake Secondary track that afternoon.

The following day they hit the road for several days making stops to run in 108 Mile, Clinton, Cache Creek, Lytton, Boston Bar, Harrison Hot Springs, Mission, Maple Ridge and finally Vancouver.

“Rya told us about a family that ran to Vancouver and that

inspired us do the event. We trained for a few months and then traveled to a bunch of different communities and ran between 5-10 kilometers at a time,” said Mountview student Kaitlyn Real.

The convoy of runners made a pair of two-day stops along the

journey in Lytton and Maple Ridge to recharge their tired legs.

“It was an incredible experience, many of us car-pooled along the route and we spent two nights camping in Lytton at Kumsheen Rapids and another two nights camping at the Albion Fair Grounds in Maple Ridge,” said Mountview student Ayme Desmond.

Some other highlights included arriving in Harrison Hot Springs to bagpipes and having entertainment provided by local First Nations and a BBQ put on by the mayor. The mayor also provided the youth with half price passes to play on an inflatable obstacle island on Harrison Lake reminiscent of the game-show ‘wipeout’ which they played on all afternoon.

“It was a great opportunity to see the province and do something that helps the children,” said Kwaleen elementary student Wyatt Jacobson.

The committee was set up in the months following the Burns Lake Mill crisis, and was tasked with making “recommendations with respect to midterm timber supply for British Columbia resulting from the pine beetle epidemic-related loss of timber supply in the central interior.”

The people of Burns Lake were forced to wait seven months for recommendations after the January 20 explosion shut down operations at Babine Forest Products. The NDP argue that the Liberals have no mechanism to assist and support communities in transition due to a crisis within the industry “The Liberals had absolutely no idea about the timber inventory or did any planning. The people of burns like should not have needed to wait several months for a reply. Secondly, it showed how uninformed their (Liberals) decisions on how our financial assets our handled and used.”

The midterm timber supply report was ‘leaked’ several months ago. The report commissioned by Jobs Minister Pat Bell stated the Quesnel TSA had about two years supply of fibre, Williams Lake TSA about eight years, and 100 Mile House TSA about four

The goal of the camp is to not only to improve their skills at hockey but learn life lessons as well.

“This camp has a very important message for the kids. It’s so easy to get in trouble these days that we want to provide them with sports as a positive environment and outlet,” said organizer Bruce Baptiste.

The camp was divided into three segments including on ice and dry-land training as well as a cultural workshop.

“During the workshop we focused on many important issues including nutrition, team-building as well as some cultural recognition and responsibilities,” said Baptiste.

One of the workshops focused on the native tradition of smudging which is the burning of sage, sweet grass, fungus used to prepare and purify a person, place or thing for a time of openness and truth in the presence of the Creator.

“The smudging teaches them a part of their culture,” added Baptiste.

Baptiste mentions another goal of the

camp is to help break down racial and cultural barriers between First Nations and non-First Nations youth.

“We also try to teach multiculturalism and togetherness. We fill our remaining spots with any non-native kids that want to join us and try to promote acceptance of all walks of life and togetherness.”

Baptiste feels sports is an excellent gateway for youth to develop confidence and Punky Lake has also ran indoor and outdoor soccer camps this past year.

In previous years the camp has been held at the arena but was switched to Total Ice this year because owner/operator Tyrel Lucas was able to teach the dry-land portion of the camp. Lucas played in the Western Hockey League and professionally in the United States.

“Tyrel specializes in personal training so we decided to change things up to focus more on teaching the kids about training properly,” said Baptiste.

“We were very pleased with Tyrel, he did a very professional job.”

Over 50 youngsters from the Child Development PreSchool and the Williams Lake Library’s Summer Reading Program had their self-portraits framed and displayed throughout Spirit Square.

“Some of us involved in the art walk thought it would be a great idea to have youth from the CDC pre-school and summer reading program create their own self portraits and then create an event downtown where the kids and their families could take part,” said Nancy Gale,

Preparing your bike for fast approaching Tour de Cariboo Betty Donahue, RPT Submitted So you’ve registered to participate in the 20th Annual Tour de Cariboo on September 8, 2012. What equipment will you need? A body and a bike in good working order are most important. Whether you choose a road bike (the traditional 10 speed style with the dropped handle bars), a mountain bike or a hybrid bike (generally used for commuting and touring) depends on the type of riding you intend to do. Be aware that the last few kilometers of the Tour de Cariboo are on a well-maintained gravel road. A bike helmet is mandatory.

Bike riding is one of the easiest ways to stay fit, promote cardiovascular health and improve muscular endurance. It is a relatively inexpensive sport that can be enjoyed by the entire family, and best of all, it is environmentally friendly. A correct bike fit is absolutely essential.

A bike that fits properly promotes good posture with all muscle groups working at maximum efficiency and with less risk of injury.

Proper bicycle fit will increase efficiency and power and minimize discomfort. The rider

has three points of contact with the bike: the handlebars, the seat and the pedals. Let’s start by determining the correct setup of your bike for road riding. The first step is choosing the correct frame size. Stand over the bike’s top tube (between the seat and the handlebars). For road biking, the general rule of thumb is to have about one inch clearance between your crotch and the frame. While sitting on the seat, with the foot resting on the pedal at its lowest point of the stroke, the knee should have about 10 degrees of bend. If the seat is too low, there is increased risk of knee pain. With the seat too high, the rider will rock back and forth, stressing the low

back. The seat should be level for endurance and recreational riding.

This allows the weight to be balanced between the arms and seat. The seat can also be shifted forward and backward slightly on the seatpost.

Bike seats are available in male and female versions. Women’s saddles are wider to accommodate the wider female pelvis. Many saddles now have a cut-out or low density foam section in the center to take pressure off the pubic bone.

Handlebars that are too low or too far forward place undue stress on the neck and back. Handlebars that are higher allow a more comfortable riding position, but sacrifice speed

and aerodynamics. If riding with clipless pedals, ensure the cleats on the shoes are adjusted to avoid any twisting stresses as you pedal.

Your feet should point straight ahead when clipped into the pedals.

Using toeclips or clipless pedals allows the rider to pull up on one pedal while pushing down on the other. Picture a smooth, circular spinning motion. Stiff-soled shoes will provide more support than runners and allow the transfer of energy more efficiently to the pedals.

Practice gearing combinations that keep the chain aligned in a fairly straight line. Avoid using the big chain ring on the front combined with the big sprocket on the

These two combinations angle the chain excessively and will wear out the bike components prematurely.

When cycling on pavement, ensure the tires are fully inflated.

This reduces the rolling resistance of the tire.

The recommended tire pressure is written on the sidewall of the tire.

Bike tires should be chosen to suit the surface on which you ride. Knobby tires are suited to gnarly trails and gravel roads, while “slicks” are more

suited to pavement riding. Cleaning and lubricating the chain regularly will enhance the bike’s performance.

Most importantly, your bike must be road worthy and in good condition. Have it checked by a qualified bike mechanic at Red Shreds or at Barking Spider Bike Shop.

Happy to return to lakecity My name is Sean Glanville and I will be taking over for Courtney Taylor as reporter for the Cariboo Advisor. This is the fourth newspaper I’ve worked for including the Williams Lake Tribune, Quesnel Observer and most recently the Kitimat Northern Sentinel. I have worked on and off in the newspaper industry since I started as Sports Reporter at the Tribune in 2001.

I was born and raised here in the lakecity where I reside with my wife Annie and three daughters Kaydence, Harmony and Tenley.

I have always enjoyed taking photos and telling stories and look forward to once again covering local news.

Anyone from town who knows me is probably aware I am a bit of a sports fanatic. I apologize in advance to non-sports people if the paper is inundated with sports stories. I played five years of university soccer which was highlighted by a 2008 Canada West Championship with University of Victoria and was named a provincial all-star.

Coincidentally I’ve worked for four newspapers and attended four different universities (five if you count

TRU Kamloops and Williams Lake as separate) so some might say I have a problem with commitment.

Through the help of some wonderful academic advisors I was able to compile my mess of transcripts and somehow graduate with a Bachelor of Arts with a History major from the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. I recently finished my second degree, a Bachelor of Education at UNBC this April.

That said, I have lived all over the province and believe we are extremely lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

I recently spent the last eight weeks filling in as editor in Kitimat and had a great experience there but will not miss receiving 80 emails a day involving the Enbridge pipeline.

It seems as though I have jumped from one hot environment versus industry debate to another as talks about New Prosperity Mine are ramping up soon.

I hope they can find an environmentally responsible solution to this project that will benefit all parties involved. This region is badly in need of growth and high paying job opportunities. With the uncertainties facing the lumber industry it is crucial to expand in

the Cariboo.

I consider it a privilege to live in Williams Lake and get a bit defensive when Lower Mainlanders and others bash the town. In most cases these are the same people that will be dumping their money into renting a 600 square foot condo because they can’t afford to buy a $700,000 home. I guess I never saw the glory in waking up at 5 a.m. to fight traffic on my commute to the city or spend 15 minutes searching for that elusive empty parking stall and then hunting down enough change to fill the meter.

A stolen Dodge pick up truck rammed into the front entrance of Total Pet Store on Broadway Avenue Sunday evening around 8:30 p.m. RCMP attended and observed that the wall to the left of the front doors was caved in almost two feet in addition to a broken window. It did not appear that the suspects actually entered the store.

Anger can be oh so addictively satisfying The headline said, “He Just Snapped!”

He’d been sitting in a bar, smoking and minding his own business, at least at that moment.

As he chatted with other patrons, a young man walked up behind him and slammed the talker’s head down on the table.

Faster than anyone could blink, there was a fight, some thrown furniture, a broken nose, then sirens and an arrest.

When asked what happened, the young man said, “I just snapped.”

No one deserves more understanding than those whose men-

acting out boiling negative emotions?

The counselor who was called in decided to take the event apart a little further.

“So, you were sitting down at the counter, right?” “Yes.” “And the other guy walked behind you?”

“Yes.” “And when he slammed your head down, you beat him up, right?” “Yes.” “Anything else?”

“No, I just snapped - I told you!”

“So, what did you do with the cigarette?” “I put it down.”

“And what did you

do with the chair?” “I moved it out of the way.”

“I thought your back was toward him.”

“It was. I had to turn around.”

“And did you think you could win?”

“Yes, I did. He was kind of small and I’ve had some boxing. And, and, and . . .”

On and on it went - questions with yes and no answers, until the smash-nosed boxer finally realized something. He had made fifteen snap-decisions before he threw the first punch.

Most of us have a

limit somewhere, given enough pressure or a painful extreme. But under everyday circumstances ‘snapping’ isn’t totally accidental. It’s an ultra-rapid series of choices with emotion in charge. Much of the time the cherished emotion is anger, and not the selfless, principled sort.

Billy Sunday says anger and a shotgun blast are alike - two instant ways to inflict a lot of damage. But why not just vent, and just let it all out? Because hurling destructive words and actions isn’t venting - it’s practicing!

And practicing is what we do when we want to really ­excel at something. In contrast, a healthy venting would chop firewood or clean toilets viciously!

Anger is a weapon.

And when I’m right, anger feels sooo good.

Filling up those places where I feel empty is addictively satisfying!

But anger bypasses reason. And more than that, anger is a consumer. As Frederick Buechner says, “Of the 7 deadly sins anger is possibly the most fun.

To lick your wounds, to smack your lips over grievances long past, to

roll over your tongue the prospect of bitter confrontations still to come, to savor to the last toothsome morsel both the pain you are given and the pain you are giving back - in many ways it is a feast fit for a king. The chief drawback is that what you are wolfing down is yourself. The skeleton at the feast is you.”

I have yet to discover anything that anger makes better. So . . . snapping is for turtles.

And you won’t find me at LOL@caribooadvisor.com today, because somehow I have a toilet to clean.

150 construction delays frustrating The Contractor completing the stretch of highway that runs through 150 Mile on Cariboo Highway 97 has been fined. Cougar Rock Contracting were to have completed the job almost one year ago.

The original contract was slated to start in May, 2010 and conclude in September 2011, however, it will not be finished now until this fall. It’s my understanding the fine is $3,500 dollars a day.

I hear some folks in B.C. are studying the possibility of having a school day from 9 a.m. to 5p.m. Monday to Friday. Because many families these days have

both parents working and it can become problematic when it comes to making arrangements for the children, a 9-5 school day would work well for them. Young kids may not have the attention span to complete an extra two hours and I suspect the B.C. Teacher’s Federation wouldn’t want to get involved with this kind of day for its teachers. .

Playoff soccer action kicks off at Esler Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The Williams Lake Men’s Soccer League kicked off playoff action this week at the Esler Soccer Complex.

In Monday’s playoff opener the regular season champions Boston Pizza took on fourth place Storm (U-18 Williams Lake Rep Team) in the first of a two-leg playoff.

Boston Pizza showed their superiority early on as Nick Iachetta scored less than a minute into the contest with a sharp-angled chip over the keeper to make it 1-0.

Storm answered to tie the game 1-1 on a great individual effort by Rhys Ungar in the 28th minute.

Unfortunately for the Storm, moments after

the ensuing kickoff Justin Tether headed the ball home from in close to but Boston Pizza back on top 2-1.

Just before half time Boston Pizza added an insurance marker as Iachetta wired home a free kick from 30 yards out to make it 3-1.

In the second half, Brandon ‘the magician’ Phillips tallied the lone marker to put the finishing touches on a 4-1 Boston Pizza win.

Despite the lop-sided score, Storm had the majority of the scoring chances but lacked finish inside the box.

The two sides will play the second leg of their series tonight with the Storm needing to win by a minimum of three goals to overturn the first leg deficit.

The other semi final playoff series kicked off Tuesday night between second seeded United

Carpet and third seeded Windsor Plywood.

The second leg will be played tomorrow

The winners of the two series will advance to Saturday’s championship final taking place at 11 a.m. at the Esler Soccer Complex.

Their will be a concession available for the finals and the awards banquets will be held at the Overlander Pub Saturday evening.

The final regular season standings had Boston Pizza in first place with 32 points, followed by United Carpet in second with 18 points, Windsor Plywood took third with 16 points, and Storm were fourth with seven points.

This season’s golden boot award goes to Darko Ognjanov of Boston Pizza with 12 goals, one ahead of Grant Gustafson of United Carpet and teammate Luke Moger who each tallied 11.

Boston Pizza had four of the leagues top five scorers as Victor Stamenov with nine goals and Iachetta with 8 finished fourth and fifth in goals.

Randhawa ready to roar for Royals Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor He’s one of the best basketball players Williams Lake has ever produced and entering his third season of university Harpreet Randhawa is hoping for a big year on the hardwood.

The 2010 Columneetza graduate is as versatile a player as they come, and can play all five positions on the court.

“My goal this season is to play at a more consistent level. Last year I would have a good game and then follow it with a bad game,” says Randhawa.

“Being a third year player I will also try to play more of a leadership role.”

At 6’ 8” Randhawa dribbles the ball like a point-guard, has a smooth jumper, runs the court like a deer and has more hops than the finest brewery.

This past season Randhawa laced up the hi-tops for the Douglas College Royals (New Westminster/Burnaby) of the Pacwest Athletics Association who finished sixth in the nine team league with a 7-9 win-loss record.

The Royals slid into the Pacwest playoffs this March with the sixth and final seed and dropped their opening quarter final game to the third ranked Camosun Chargers (Victoria) 68-62.

Randhawa led all scorers with a game-high 18 points and added seven rebounds in the loss. He averaged around 12 points and 10 rebounds per game this past year.

This year’s Royals roster will feature plenty of rookies, as only four returning player will be back in New Westminster for training camp. However, Royals’ coach Denis Beausoleil has a great crop of rookie recruits coming in.

“Our goal will be to not only make playoffs but make it past the first round and win some games,” said Randhawa.

The one knock on Randhawa’s game has been his strength, as elite level basketball requires plenty of upper-body strength through the chest and the shoulders. His goal this off-season has been to put on some muscle.

“With my body type it’s really tough for me to put on muscle but I’m putting on a bit of weight this summer. I also have been trying to work on my ballhandling more,” says Randhawa.

After having offers to play at a number of post-secondary institutions out of high school, Randhawa chose to attend Kwantlen College in Surrey for his 2010-11 rookie season in the British

Columbia Collegiate Athletics Association (now Pacwest). The Kwantlen Eagles were in a rebuilding phase and Randhawa saw plenty of action enabling his game to develop.

In his rookie season at Kwantlen he was one of the lone bright spots during a dismal season

for the Eagles who finished near the bottom of the league.

Randhawa was named the team’s MVP and was named to the BCCAA All Rookie Team. He was among the league leaders in both points and rebounds.

He transferred to Douglas for his second

year and had to sacrifice some of his scoring by playing on a better team.

“My stats were down a bit but playing on a better team, I had less shooting opportunities,” said Randhawa.

“This year with a lot of veterans leaving I shoot be put in more of a scoring role.”

He has been able to keep in somewhat game shape playing pick-up basketball whenever possible with friends at the Thompson Rivers University and Columneetza gyms.

“It’s been great having access to the gym, the people at Columneetza and TRU have been great,” adds Randhawa.

Randhawa had a decorated high school career playing in backto-back zone finals and provincial AA championships. After losing a heartbreaking zone final to hosts D.P. Todd in overtime in Grade 11 Randhawa led Columneetza to the zone championship in his Grade 12 year and was named MVP. It was the schools first senior boys basketball title in nearly 20 years since the Jack Burgar era of the early-nineties.

Randhawa lists Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant as his favourite athlete, and is excited about the off-season acquisitions the tinsel-town team has made including Victoria native Steve Nash and center Dwight Howard. He likes their chances to dethrone current NBA champions Miami Heat this coming season.

“I think the Lakers with four future hallof-famers in their starting line-up will beat Miami,” said Randhawa.

After staying in the Lower Mainland for summer school last year, Randhawa returned to the lakecity this off-season to work at West Fraser sawmills where he did weekend clean-up shifts during high school.

He credits his parents for much of his success as they are completely behind him in supporting his athletic and academic endeavours.

“They are behind me 100 percent and without their support university and playing basketball wouldn’t be possible,” says Randhawa.

Randhawa is pursuing a degree in Kinesiology and hopes to transfer to UBC next year to complete his degree there. He will have two years of eligibility left of the allotted five to play basketball.

He plans to play at UBC but is well aware of the step-up in competition as they play in the top tier Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS).

“I definitely hope to play basketball at UBC but there is a big step up in competition from Pacwest to CIS so hopefully my game continues to improve,” said Randhawa.

Randhawa plans to head back to Douglas College in late August before reporting to training camp September 1.

Lakecity MotoX riders take checkered flag 95 MotoX riders converged on the lakecity this weekend in hopes of capturing the checkered flag. Williams Lake had five racers win overall titles including Cole Bernier, Levi Nelson, Wyatt Branch, Brock Hoyer, and Glen Oosting.

The Williams Lake MotoX Track on Bonds Lake Road played host to the British Columbia MotoX Association North Series for rounds 13 and 14.

Racers hailed from 19 different communities from all corners of the province as well as one out of province entry from Turin (Lethbridge area), AB. Participants came from Kitimat, Terrace, Smithers, Telkwa, Houston, Vanderhoof and Fort St. James in the North West, Winfield, Revelstoke, and Kelowna to the South as well as regional competitors from Horsefly, 70 Mile House, Lac La Hache, 150 Mile House, Williams Lake, Quesnel,

and Prince George, and as far north as Baldonnel (Fort St. John area).

Racers bolted out of the gates during the Schoolboy and Ladies class race Sunday afternoon.

RCMP responds to 75 calls over the weekend Over the weekend Williams Lake RCMP Detachment members responded to approximately 75 calls for service. Nature of calls ranged from disturbances, assaults, motor vehicle incidents and assistance to the general public. Incidents of significance attended are noted below: Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Williams Lake RCMP received a complaint of a quad moved from a residence overnight on Mann Road.

It was located in a neighbours’ driveway.

There was no damage to the quad however it

appears that suspects attempting to steal it had moved it to this location.

Saturday afternoon police responded to a report of a break and enter at Lagerquist Road in McLeese Lake, B.C. Police attended and found the front door kicked in. Nothing was taken and no suspects were identified.

Saturday around 5 p.m. the Williams Lake Fire Department requested assistance at 83 2nd Ave S for a small fire in the parking lot.

Police attended and found four individuals sitting in the parking

lot with a burnt pizza box. They all claim that they found the box on fire and put it out.

All parties left the area without incident. No damage done.

Sunday afternoon around 2 p.m. RCMP were dispatched to 845 11th Ave at the Poplar Glade School site for a report of a mischief in progress at that location. Upon police arrival no one was in the area, but police could see the intermittent flash of lights as they used them to light the wall. Police observed a considerable amount of graffiti to the concrete

wall on the old school site. Patrols in the area came up with negative results. School District 27 office was notified of the mischief.

If anyone in the area observed any possible suspects they are asked to contact the Williams Lake RCMP or contact Crimestoppers.

Later on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. a request to assist the fire department came in when a motor home caught fire at Hen Ingram Lake Recreation Site.

Police attended and confirmed that no one had been injured in the fire. The owners of

the motor home were in the area on holidays from Washington.

The fire started in the fridge and spread quickly, engulfing the entire unit. The occupants made it out of the vehicle with no injuries. The RV was a 2000 ITSCA RV. The motor home was completely destroyed.

Forestry was advised as some nearby trees had been scorched and the ground was still smoldering.

Sunday evening at 7:03 p.m., Williams Lake RCMP received a complaint of a theft of vehicle. A 2001 White

Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was missing from the owner's yard.

There was glass in the driveway and a neighbor stated he heard glass breaking at about 5 p.m. While investigating this theft, police located/recovered another stolen vehicle across the street. A few minutes later police recovered the stolen pick up on Paxton Road. The truck had its passenger window broken and steering column destroyed.

The theft is still under investigation.

The Williams Lake RCMP received a com-

plaint that a property in the Big Lake area had recently been entered and suspect(s) stole a significant amount of tools and household items. Also during this occurrence the suspect(s) caused extensive damage to a pump.

Williams Lake RCMP is asking for public assistance regarding this incident and encourages anyone who may have information regarding this theft or any other crime to contact police at (250) 392-6211, or call Crime Stoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS (8477).

Although Kay and her husband Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) are dedicated to each other, they’ve lost the spark in their relationship and sleep in separate rooms.

Kay hears about a famous relationship guru— Dr. Bernie Feld (Steve Carell)—and signs them up for one week of intense marriage therapy in the small town of Great Hope Springs where Dr. Feld is located. Arnold is skeptical and Kay has a hard time convincing him to go.

This time of the year is great for fruit and of course it is barbecue season as well. A lot of people have never tried cooking fruit on the BBQ. For me, I like the taste of fruit done on the Bar’by, it seems like it gets sweeter when cooked this way as the sugars are caramelized.

Most fruit does not take long to cook on the barbecue, so it is worthwhile to keep a close eye on your cooking time.

Overcooking can make fruit mushy.

if you are doing fruit kebabs. Although deserts aren’t often considered a priority, or even a necessity at a barbecue, fruits are often a good choice because they’re fun to cook and, usually, totally unexpected.

Barbecued Fruit Kebabs 3 nectarines, quartered and stoned 3 bananas, peeled and thickly sliced 6 red plums, halved and stoned 12 large strawberries 3 kiwi fruit, quartered 2 mangoes, peeled, halved and stoned, then cut into chunks 6 tbsp on Cointreau Ameretto 2 tbsp of clear honey Put all fruits into a bowl and then mix the honey with the booze until well blended. Pour the

mixture over the fruit and toss, so the fruit is coated. . Cover with Saran wrap and put in fridge for about an hour. Thread a section of the fruit pieces onto a wooden skewer that has been soaked for at least one-half an hour.

Cook the kebabs over medium heat for about 5 minutes until lightly caramelized. Brush the kebabs with the marinade while cooking. You can serve this with a little ice cream.

What a treat.
