Thousands of Cariboo residents were enjoying the sweet smells and sounds of the South Cariboo Garlic Festival in Lac La Hache on the weekend.

The two-day event featured a number of events including the festival cook off. It was the 13th annual edition of the event, with the original festival held in 100 Mile House back in 1999.

The event founder, Carmen Wannop, also known as Garlic Gail, was on hand for this year’s festivities with her Goodness of Garlic booth.

Gina Myhill Jones took home first prize and $1000 for her Garlic Beef Explosion Rolls.

It was Jones second Master Chef title as she turned the trick two years back in 2010.

Jones plans to purchase a new horse with her garlic creation winnings.

Second prize of $500 went to Shannon Johnston with her Rosie’s Garlic Perogies.

Steven McCrea rounded out the top three taking third place and $250 with his Pork Rolls and Dip. The last performer of the day to end the biggest and best Garlic Festival ever held was Steve Elliott as Elvis Elite. Elliott is the Grand Canadian Champion Tribute Artist and has been performing all over Canada for the past 10 years.

A huge crowd watched and sang along to the many, many favorite and memorable songs from Elvis, Roy Orbinson and Louie Armstrong.

David Black invests in $13B B.C. oil refinery It was over 40 years ago that media mogul David Black purchased his first newspaper, The Williams Lake Tribune, from his dad Alan and partner Clive Stangoe.

Today, Black’s media empire consists of more than 150 newspapers across Canada and the United States.

The owner and president of Black Press owns community newspapers throughout B.C. including both lakecity papers The Cariboo Advisor and the aforementioned Tribune.

Black made a major announcement on Friday, August 17, in which he plans to build a world class state-of-the-art oil refinery near Kitimat. It’s the first time in Black’s business realm that he has ventured outside of media, his obvious area of expertise.

Black, 66, plans to construct a $13 billion refinery called Kitimat Clean Ltd. that would permanently alter the industrial landscape of Northern B.C. for generations. The pro-

posed site is 25 kilometres north of Kitimat and 25 kilometres south of Terrace and has the operational capacity to process all the raw bitumen from the Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

The pipeline, which would start in the Edmonton area, would then travel to the Kitimat refinery before being shipped to a marine terminal site in Kitimat on the Douglas Channel and eventually on to Asia.

The plant would process up to 550,000 barrels per day of dibit to be shipped back to Edmonton, 240,000 barrels per day of diesel, 100,000 barrels per day of gasoline and 50,000 barrels per day of kerosene.

The refinery would help alleviate the environmental damage should a spill occur along B.C.’s coastal waters due to their ability to float and evaporate.

“The refinery will eliminate any chance of a crude oil spill from shipping through Kitimat. Gasoline, kerosene and diesel, which

are the products from the refinery all float and are all evaporative,” explained Black.

“We want it to be the cleanest and the greenest operating refinery in the world...

Because Canada has such stringent environmental regulations, it will likely be the cleanest refinery built in the world in the next 20 years.”

According to Black, processing the oil before it is shipped out will remove the threat of offshore pollution from heavy cruise due to the evaporative properties of kerosene, gasoline and diesel.

Construction plans call for groundbreaking in 2014, with the facility complete in 2020. During the five-year construction period, an estimated 6,000 workers would be needed, while another 3,000 permanent jobs would be created during operation, with half of those being provided through private contractors.

“I really believe all of these jobs are needed

Concert-goers bear sprayed at Elk’s Hall event Wednesday, August 22 just after midnight, the Williams Lake RCMP responded to a motor vehicle accident on 2nd Avenue North near Oliver Street. A witness reported that he saw a blue Ford pick up drive into a business at that location after driving through a cement planter and parking

sign. The vehicle then struck two businesses, causing minor damage to one while breaking the pane of glass to the other. The vehicle then fled prior to police arrival. A few hours later, the RCMP located the suspect vehicle in the matter. This investigation is continuing.

Saturday, Aug. 25, at

approximately 10 p.m., the Williams Lake RCMP responded to multiple complaints of an assault with a weapon at the Elks Hall.

There had been a dance at the Hall when three to four males attended and concealed their faces with bandanas.

For no apparent reason, this group of males then

began to bear spray people inside and outside of the Hall. Dozens of innocent bystanders were contaminated.

The aggressors shouted out gang-affiliated names and identified themselves as members of a local gang. Several victims had to be taken to Cariboo Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Sunday, Aug. 26, at about 4 a.m., the Williams Lake RCMP responded to disturbance in the 1000 block of 3rd Ave north. A group of six individuals (young adults) were assaulted while walking on 3rd Ave by another group made up of three to four males and one female using weapons.

Injuries were minor in nature. The incident is still under investigation.

Over the past couple of months, the Williams Lake RCMP has seen an increase in crimes related to vehicles including mischiefs (damage), thefts from and thefts of. Albeit the RCMP believe it is small group of individuals involved, the spike in these crimes has been quite significant.

Navratil enjoying fruitful business endeavour

quality produce,” says Navratil.

Navratil drives his truck down to the South Okanagan near Osooyos every three or four days to restock his fruit and ensure that he has the ripest produce on the market by getting it directly from the source.

“All of our fruit is grown right here in B.C. and we have some of the best fruit in the world and the demand for our local produce has never been higher,” says Navratil.

They are located under the big blue tent in the parking lot at the Husky gas station on Highway 97. Their initial location was at the 150 Mile Roadhouse Pub, where they opened up in June. However, the

road construction was hurting their business and they were forced to come into town. They plan to stay open until late September, weather permitting.

“We really appreciate the owners at the Husky letting us come here, they showed good community spirit,” says Navratil. “It’s been really tough for the 150 Mile businesses during the past few summers with all the road construction.”

The Husky location has had a proven track record of success as local businessman Bill Wakely and wife Melanie ran a fruit stand there for years before venturing out and purchasing Blacky’s Car Wash.

A sore butt may be the overwhelming factor that causes new riders to stop cycling.

Adopt a consistent riding schedule. The more time you spend on the bike, the sooner your butt will adapt. Invest in a gel seat and padded cycling shorts. Find cycling shorts that do not have a seam in the center of the chamois so there is less chafing. A wicking T-shirt will keep you dry as

Stretch the upper body by periodically reaching behind with one hand as though to receive a baton in a relay race.

Grip the handlebars lightly and ride with the arms relaxed.

Preparing your leg muscles by strengthening and stretching can help reduce the risk of overuse injuries. Lunges will help strengthen the thigh and butt muscles. Picture the upper body and hips moving straight up and down.

knee to move in front of the ankle. Tighten the butt muscle as you rise. The depth of the lunge should be in painfree range for the knee.

Holding weights in the hands will increase the difficulty. Calf raises will strengthen the calf muscles. Standing on the edge of a step, rise up and down on the toes while keeping the knees straight. Doing this exercise one leg at a time will increase the difficulty.

After a ride, stretching can help reduce muscle soreness. To stretch the quads (front of the thigh), stand on one leg, grasp the ankle and pull the knee back in line with the hip. Avoid arching the back. The hamstrings (back of thigh) can be stretched by standing, placing one straight leg in front on a chair and bending forward from the hips. To stretch the calf ( lower leg), stand with one leg back, knee straight, heel maintaining contact with the floor and lean forward.

Slow, sustained stretches of 20-30 seconds are most beneficial. Avoid bouncing while stretching.

Johannesen finds new passion rejuvenating Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor For local artist Larry Johannesen, it doesn’t seem all that long ago that he had four children living under his roof filling his home full of life. Today his four children: daughters Amber, Natalie, and Stephanie and son Chad are all grown up pursuing their own goals leaving Johannesen an empty nest.

“A lot of the reason why I draw is because I’m really missing my kids. It helps fill that emptiness,” said Johannesen.

Johannesen finds spending even a few minutes an evening with his pencil in hand can help rejuvenate his spirits and help him feel relaxed.

“I have found the formal process of drawing meditative and grounding,” said Johannesen.

Johannesen started from humble beginnings scribbling in the margins of a notebook. Eight years ago, Johannesen decided to take the next step and began drawing more official portraits.

He drew his first portrait of a baby photo of son Chad back in 2004.

“It was horrible, and that’s probably why it’s not on display,” laughs Johannesen.

Undiscouraged, he kept drawing and many of his early drawings of automobiles helped him develop the confidence to capture personalities on paper.

“My favourite subjects are my family members,” says Johannesen.

He is one of 40

local artists featured in the Williams Lake Art Walk and will have his work on display at United Carpet Monday through Saturday until September 8.

Johannesen was able to combine his love of art and cars as his main display is a jeep pedal car which has been constructed with some woodwork to display a number of Larry’s portraits.

Johannesen is entering his 13th year as a high school counselor with School District 27 and in his profession there are no physical or tangible results to show for his efforts. Johannesen likes the idea of having something to show for his efforts.

“It is a good balance between the somewhat intangible work as a counselor and the practice of rendering images into a concrete, accurate representation,” says Johannesen.

Johannesen's other hobby, restoring old vehicles, has him currently working on a 1956 Mercury Pick-up Truck which he had towed from Smithers.

“The truck has been a four year project for me but working on cars is a lot like art and can be very therapeutic,” said Johannesen.

He credits Cariboo welder Rod Froberg with helping him on the truck and calls welding ‘an art in itself.’ Froberg was also the first person to commission Johannesen to draw him a portrait.

Johannesen does the majority of his portraits during the winter when

it’s cold and dark outside. He’s been creating a variety of portraits from athletes such as Steve Nash and Steve Yzerman, to old vehicles, and a number of family members.

One of his recent projects also included drawing a picture of good friend Pat Radolla’s grandson Gavin, as a retirement present.

His work is framed by local craftsman, Irv Enns, who handcrafts each frame in his basement.

The idea of selling his portraits never occurred to Johannesen early on as it was strictly a hobby but as he improves he admits that he plans to do occasional commissioned work.

“I think all artists should be prepared to sell what they make because eventually you have so much stuff you have no idea what to do with it,” said Johannesen.

His next progression as an artist will be drawing with coloured pencils having only toiled with straight black on white portraits.

Johannesen, 54, will be hard-pressed convincing McDonalds employees to give him the seniors coffee rate when he turns 55 next year. An avid runner, he has kept fit and looks closer to 45.

He and wife Sharon run a few half marathons and the occasional marathon each year.

“We have ran half marathons with all of our daughters and running has become a big part of our family. We all run together and talk

Armstrong a hero or a cheat?

Neil Armstrong. Lance Armstrong. It was coincidental these men, without a doubt the two most famous men to bear the last name, were both making headlines this past week.

Neil with his passing, and Lance being stripped by the United States Anti Doping Association of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles and given a lifetime ban.

Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon died Saturday at the age of 82.

Armstrong’s Apollo 11 mission captivated an entire world back in July 1969 when he uttered these words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for Mankind.”

President Barack Obama hailed the late astronaut as one of the greatest of American heroes of all time.

Armstrong and the rest of his crew declared victory that day against the Russians in the Cold War space race by being the first nation to walk on the moon.

“They set out to show the world that the American spirit can see beyond what seems unimaginable – that with enough drive and ingenuity, anything is possible. And when Neil stepped foot on the surface of the moon for the first time, he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten,” Obama said.

Some people will remember Lance Armstrong as the greatest cyclist of all time and others as a cheat.

Armstrong maintains his innocence and says these allegations against him are an unfair witchhunt.

Seemingly undaunted by the news Armstrong was back on his bike Saturday at an event in Aspen, Colorado. “Nobody needs to cry for me.

I’m going to be great,” Armstrong told reporters.

“I have five great kids and a wonderful lady in my life.

The Texan who beat cancer and started the Livestrong foundation, which has raised hundreds of millions of dollars, has retained his major sponsors and says his foundation will be unaffected.

Doping in sports will always be a hot topic.

I know every time I watch a major cycling or track and field event I just assume they are all on steroids but the one’s who don’t get caught have better pharmacists and can stay ahead of the anti-doping police.

Perhaps the most famous sports survey ever is the Goldman Dilemma. Researcher Bob Goldman began asking elite athletes in the 1980s whether they would take a drug that guaranteed them a gold medal but would also kill them within five years.

More than half the athletes said yes. When he repeated the survey biannually for the next decade the results were always the same. About half of the athletes were quite ready to take the bargain.

Major League Baseball introduced drug testing around a decade ago. Many of the games most prolific power hitters including Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, and many more suddenly saw huge drop-offs in their production.

They were all eventually caught and will likely never make it into Cooperstown (Hallof-Fame).

Another famous baseball player involved in a doping scandal made headlines this week as Roger Clemens at the age of 50 pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the Sugarland Skeeters, a minor league club from suburban Houston.

Clemens, before Congress, denied accusations by former personal trainer Brian McNamee of using steroids.

The Justice Department began an investigation into whether he had lied under oath. In 2010 a grand jury indicted him on two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress.

Clemens 4,672 strikeouts are third-most all time and he was picked for 11 All-Star games.

In some other ‘Armstrong’ related news, Chef David Omar, has created a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich for Armstrong, the B.C.-based company that’s been making cheese for more than 100 years.

Omar was at the West Edmonton Mall Saturday giving out samples.

Theatre to offer $6 movies The Paradise Cinemas have made an unprecedented move to give moviegoers wallets a bit of a break this fall.

They have cut ticket prices for their late shows from Sunday through Thursday from $9 to $6 from September 1 to October 31.

“We were able to talk to the studios and we asked for a pricebreak this fall. They agreed to allow us to discount our movies,” said owner David Hothi.

Hothi said the goal of the promotion is to bring more of an audience to the late show while also making a night out at the movies more economical.

“We hope this idea is successful and then maybe we can hammer out a deal to have something more permanent in place. We want to drive more business to the late

show while also giving the consumer a break,” said Hothi.

Many cinemas offer one discounted night per week including giants Cineplex Odeon who discount Tuesday nights. However, these nights often lead to an overcrowded theatre and many people avoid those nights due to parking congestion and long waits in the ticket and concession line-ups.

The Paradise Cinemas by offering the discount five days a week say it allows people to be flexible with their schedules and still provide a comfortable environment.

“A lot of theatres offer a discount only one day a week and by allowing the discount five days a week it gives the audience not only a break in costs but flexibility with their schedule,” explains Hothi.

We are a spiritual being having a physical experience People often tell me I am too intellectual, that I live in my head too much. Well that’s a lot of malarkey.

Mind you, it sure set me thinking! Are we just body and mind or is there more? Eckhart Tolle claims; ’thinking is no more than a tiny aspect of the totality of consciousness, the totality of who we are.

So who is running the show here? As has been said; “we are not a physical being having a spiritual experience, we are a spiritual being having a physical experience.” Who is this spiritual being?

The soul or sometimes termed, ‘Higher Self ’.

Could this be our “Guardian Angel?” If we tune in to that ‘still small voice within’, the soul body, we are apt to see that we are more than our thoughts and emotions. I often convene with this greater Self for help and guidance. Usually wise counsel comes through, whether we

obey it or not.

And I admit that sometimes I talk to myself. This helps with needful self-reckoning.

At least I’m a good listener, and I’m always In good company.

“What have you got yourself into now Bob? “Wouldn't it have been better to think this through?” “No, I’m trying to de-intellectualize myself here.” We may have to admit that a good ‘talking to’ self, is sometimes necessary.

I for one believe that facing oneself in the mirror, eyeball to eyeball is a healthy exercise. Though, after a moment of this mirror therapy, I usually crack

up. I just can’t take myself that seriously.

But then seriously folks, when do we take a proper accounting of ourselves? Well here is where a good wife comes in.

There are times Carmen believes I have lost my mind. I guess that’s why she feels it necessary to give me a piece of hers now and then. Thankful that I am, it does me no good to pursue objectives that run contrary to popular opinion, usually Carmen’s.

Maverick that I am, I do it anyway and if it is pointed out to me my errant ways, well I’m honest enough to

admit that I might be wrong. If I recall correctly, I have been wrong before. (On the rare occasion.) Yes, there are times when I have made a mess of things. The only way out for me, is to forge along anyway, which I do with great masochistic fervor. While Carmen of course, feels I should quit while I am still ahead.

I tell Carmen that sometimes things go well, sometimes they don’t. That’s life.

Remember Murphy’s famous dictum; “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong”.

Now as far as my shenanigans are con-

cerned, Carmen offers, that Murphy was probably an optimist. All this comes back to the ‘good wife’ scenario.

Telling oneself that maybe a second opinion might be worthy of consideration, even if it goes against intended plans, helps keep me out of trouble.

“Although perhaps, not often enough”; opines you know who.

Now those of you who may have followed this my column no doubt have come to realize that my dear wife is the voice of common sense in this relationship. On the other hand, I am the one with both feet

planted firmly, in midair. Okay so be it. It takes all kinds right?

What would we do without the dreamers of this world? Our artists, poets and creators. Be a lot better off? I don’t think so.

So in a fit of extraordinary generosity, I told Carmen she had good sense. “I married you didn’t I?” she responded. To which I replied; In that case, you have shown exceptionally good sense and I might add, extremely good taste.” Carmen now asks me if I happen to be going through one of my pompous, self-centered and delusional stages.

Impressed by young golf champ Back to school, always an exciting time for most students. The school year brings a new classroom setting, with a different teacher and unfamiliar classmates. It can be a little unsettling for young children attending school at the beginning of a new year. It’s important to spend some time to talk to the young ones before their first day of school because when kids know what to expect, things are less scary for them.

old, and the youngest ever to win the LPGA Canadian Open. This youngster was so poised it was almost unreal for a person of her age to be so cool in the game and her public speaking when she accepted her trophy was almost as good as her golf game. It was simply amazing to see someone so young appear so mature. Her Korean mother was in attendance and she has been her caddy for some time. Many athletes are getting better at younger ages. Must be something in the water.

As summer draws to an end out here in Horsefly, I must say it has been a wonderful summer, full of sun and fun. The river over the last few weeks has been bustling with lots of tubers of all ages. Open Mic night at the Anvil Pub on the 4th of August was a great success lots of great music filled the room for the evening, there was even a fella there playing the harmonica, he was truly an amazing musician! The 4-H children from Horsefly took part in the Show and Sale at the Williams Lake Stockyards and I heard that they did a fantastic job with there animals, and did very well with there sales.

Congratulations to you all! Horsefly had there Fall Fair on the 25th of August. A great many people from all over were out to look at all the fair entries. Bud Weir was out to give rides with his heavy draft horses and this as always proved to be a fall fair favourite.

I took a little time for myself this month with my sweetie and we went up to Elysia Resort for the day.

We were greeted right away by the great staff and had a cup of coffee out on the deck before we went to launch the boat for a day on the lake.

We put the boat in the water and then parked the truck and trailer.

Harmony swiftly zipped us down to the water via golf cart, so we could get underway for the day! Harmony is a great lady I met her many years ago when I worked at Cariboo GM. When I first met her she was the same go-getter as she is today. She had just started working at Elysia Resort then and is now enjoying her twelfth seasons. Harmony is a true people person (I guess that is what I admire about her). Harmony started with Elysia as a Housekeeper and Server, she quickly moved up and by her second season was manager.

Fire protection talks continue Williams Lake, BC – Last week the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) and the City of Williams Lake started the next round of negotiations to develop a new agreement for fire protection services in the Williams Lake Rural Fringe area.

A majority of the Williams Lake rural fringe property owners are covered by a Provincial fire protection agreement that pre-dates the establishment of the Regional District. The Province has been requesting the CRD and City to negotiate a new fire protection agreement for the fringe property owners for a number of years.

With the pending expiry of the two adjacent

CRD fire protection agreements, in 2011 the CRD and City established a sub-committee to negotiate a new consolidated fire protection agreement for all three fringe areas. The results of those negotiations were presented to Council earlier this year at which time Council rejected the proposal for a new agreement.

The Provincial Government subsequently issued a letter advising that the Provincial fire protection agreement would be terminated on December 31, 2012.

Based on that letter the CRD and the City have agreed to resume negotiations to try to negotiate a new agreement.

Pool maintenance shutdown The annual maintenance shutdown for the Sam Ketcham Memorial pool is now underway and it is scheduled to reopen on Monday, September 17.

Staff will be hard at work, scrubbing, painting, repairing and maintaining the facility during the three-week shutdown. The gym will only be closed for the remainder of this week and will re-open on Tuesday.

The office administration hours from today through Friday will be 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Regular hours

will resume on Tuesday when the gym reopens.

The parties will meet again this week to continue dis-

The Cariboo Regional District will be hosting public meetings in September to provide affected CRD residents with updates about the negotiations.

Windsor Plywood downs BPs 3-1 in soccer final

Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor Windsor Plywood was crowned Williams Lake Men’s Soccer League playoff champions Saturday.

Windsor blew open a scoreless game at half time with three second half goals en route to a 3-1 victory. They became the third different team to win the title in the past three years as Boston Pizza won last season’s playoffs, and United Carpet turned the trick back in 2010.

Boston Pizza were the regular season champions with a 10-32 win-loss-tie record, and their 32 points were double that of Windsor Plywood who finished with 16 points and were seeded third in the four team standings.

However, Windsor Plywood who had been missing a number of its key players throughout the regular season finally had all their big guns available for playoffs.

In first half action Nick Iachetta of Boston Pizza had the best chance as he was left alone in the box but his shot was saved by Windsor goalkeeper Ian Neels.

In the second half Windsor struck twice in the opening 10 minutes with Josh Maynard scoring the eventual winning goal from distance.

With the score 2-0 BP midfielder and league Most Valuable Player Luke Moger went down with a leg injury. However, moments after the restart BPs had their best chance as Brandon ‘the magician’ Phillips' shot hit the underside of the crossbar and stayed out.

Windsor would eventually add another insurance marker and take a 3-0 lead. Iachetta broke Neels bid for a shutout and got BPs on the board scoring late to make the final score 3-1. It was Iachetta’s fifth playoff goal in three games to lead all scorers.

BPs goalkeeper Travis Nystoruk made a number of great saves to keep his team in the contest.

Maynard and Brad Thiessen had strong games in midfield for Windsor covering plenty of ground and each picking up an assist. Josh Laking and Gerald Pinchbeck were stalwarts on defence for Windsor.

Windsor advanced to the finals after defeating United Carpet 4-3 on aggregate during their two-leg semi final series. After being deadlocked after the first leg 1-1, Windsor downed United Carpet 3-2 Thursday. Maynard and Quinten Klopp scored for Windsor and Mike Brogan scored both United Carpet goals.

The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw last Tuesday night. Thiessen scored midway through the first half to put Windsor ahead 1-0.

United Carpet replied in the second half when Mike Grace’s shot from distance had the rebound fall to team-mate Calvin Dubray who was left a tap in to tie the game 1-1.

Both goalkeepers, Curt Levens for United Carpet and Aaron Zurak for Windsor made fantastic saves throughout the match.

Boston Pizza took a 4-1 advantage over the U-18 Storm after last Monday’s first game into Wednesday’s game two. BP went on to a 3-2 victory with Iachetta scoring a pair of goals and Phillip bagging the game winner. Colby Taylor scored a pair of late goals for Storm to cut the lead to 3-2.

The final total after both games saw BP advance 7-3 on aggregate to Saturday’s final.

Here are the winners from the men’s awards banquet: Nathan Zurak was named top forward, Pinchbeck earned top defender, BPs Mojer was top midfielder and MVP, United Carpet’s Les McMath was most sportsmanlike, Levens picked up top goaltender, Kevin Woodward won the League Builder award and Darryl Taylor won the Russell Lund Memorial award.

Stellar results at Redstone rodeo Williams Lake and area cowboys and cowgirls bucked their way to some stellar results at the Redstone Rodeo August 18-19 as part of the British Columbia Rodeo Association circuit.

Here are the results for Williams Lake and area competitors: Willee Twan of Alkali Lake placed third in TieDown Roping with a time of 12.5 seconds and earned $141.96 for his efforts.

Wacey Marr of Gang Ranch won the Saddle Bronce aboard Hawkeye with a score of 72.

Rob Everett of 150 Mile House took second in Steer Wrestling with a tiem of 18.5 seconds.

Ryan Jasper of Riske Creek won the Bull Riding as he rode Buzzsaw to a score of 76.

Keely Durrell of Riski Creek was runner up in Breakaway Roping with a time of 4 seconds to earn $278.46. Norma Macdonald of Williams Lake was third in the event with a time of 4.4 seconds and picked up $185.64.

Micole Myers of Williams Lake placed third in Junior Breakaway Roping with a time of 5.5 seconds.

Shaylene Tulker of Williams Lake grabbed second in the Ladies Barrel Racing event with a time of 16.812 seconds and earned $234.78 for her efforts.

Sydney Zwak of Williams Lake and Wendel Williams also of the lakecity tied for second in the Junior Steer Riding with identical scores of 70.

Fisher and Giesbrecht sweep races Drivers were competing with heavy hearts this weekend at Thunder Mountain Speedway's annual Memorial Race.

After a four-car paint-swap during the first lap, it was a clean sweep for #25 George Giesbrecht in the Bone Stock Class who took first place in the qualifying, trophy dash, heat and main event.

The #35 car driven

by Jesse Fisher in the Thunder Class followed suit and swept all four races in his class as well.

With Giesbrecht and Fisher in top form it’s going to make for some fine racing on Saturday, September 8 at the Points Final Championship. Only one point separate Giesbrecht and the #66 car driven by Sean Kelly in the Bone Stocks and Fisher is closing the point spread on Tim Westwick’s #56 car in the Thunder class.

In the Heartland Toyota Pro-Minis class it was Allen Roberts, the youngest driver in the class, winning the fast time in his #20 vehicle.

Marius Dunford in his #2 car won the trophy dash, with Tim Roberts in his #25 car capturing the heat and the main event.

Donny Kunka took tthe checkered flag in the Street Stocks main

event in his #37 car.

IN THEATRES LAWLESS In Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, bootlegging siblings take the law into their own hands. The youngest brother, Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf), considers himself the next Al Capone—he wants to dress in sharp suits, carry guns and drive fast cars, no matter what it takes. In the midst of trying to make it big, he’s also got his sights set on impressing a beautiful but off-limits Amish girl (Mia Wasikowska).

Howard (Jason Clarke) is the muscle of the operation, having survived the carnage of the Great War. Their eldest brother, Forrest (Tom Hardy), who nearly died from the Spanish flu that killed their parents, leads with strength of character and silent determination against corporate greed as the Bondurants’ legend grows, along with the dangers they face.

The boys have developed a thriving, small-scale moonshine business. But their operation is threatened with the arrival of Special Deputy Charlie Rakes (Guy Pearce), who brings with him a new breed of the “law,” one that is lethal and corrupt, challenging everything the brothers have built.

While the rest of the county gives in to Rakes, the Bondurants will bow to no one, even if that means putting everything on the line, even their relationship with each other.

Based on the book The Wettest County in the World by Matt Bondurant, a fictionalized account of his own family THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN When happily married Cindy and Jim Green (Jennifer Garner, Joel Edgerton) discover they can’t have children, all they can do is sit at home and dream of what their child might be like.

But after putting their wishes in a small box and burying it in the back yard, they are surprised to find young Timothy (DJ Adams) show up at their house one stormy night.

It isn’t long before Timothy begins to exhibit strange and wonderful attributes, and the couple quickly realizes that the child is more special than they ever could have imagined. Soon enough, their whole little town of Stanleyville will be moved by the young boy.

From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. students can get their student number from student services and then have their ID card made at the library as well as their log in information for their myTRU account at the library.

Student Services will also be open for any financial aid information. Students can also sign up for a locker, which costs $10 per semester with reception.

There will be fun campus tours led by a TRU North faculty member, which will be ongoing every 15 minutes from 9:45 a.m. to 11 a.m.

It’s tough to execute when the morning rush hits and getting the family out of bed and out the door has all the ease of a slippery elephant.

Your student may just like ham and cheese sandwiches every day, but it is important to provide different items in the lunch box to expand a picky eater’s palate. The older students would probably throw it out. So, you could try introducing the food at dinner time

I know some Cariboo parents also get the young folks involved with the lunch. I mean how hard is it to make a sandwich. I’m not talking about some high class gourmet sandwich that might be somewhat difficult for a non cook type of person to assemble, I am saying it is pretty darn simple to make a peanut butter and jam sandwich or even something as upscale as the old classic ham and cheese with a little lettuce. It doesn’t take a whole lot of time to get involved with kids in the kitchen.
