Ten-year-old Ty Sanford and his sister Taylor, 8, are all smiles with their one-year-old English Bulldog puppy Maggie Mae at the Paws for a Cause SPCA fundraiser Sunday. Many animal lovers and their pets turned out for the annual event at Boitanio Park, which supports the local animal shelter.

Animal lovers Paws For A Cause Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Dogs big and small, short and tall turned out with their owners for the always popular Paws for a Cause SPCA fundraiser Sunday at Boitanio Park.

“It was a good day,” said Williams Lake SPCA animal care supervisor Kristen Meadows of the annual event, which is an important fundraiser for the non-profit organization.

“We saw many new dogs and new people as well as the regulars who come out to support us every year. It’s a fun-filled day and it’s all pet-related, so it’s great for animal lovers.” Local Scotiabank

volunteers were on hand to help with registration Sunday morning, while businesses like the Animal Care Hospital also had staff available offering heart-shaped pet paw prints by donation to fundraise.

Many local businesses and private citizens also donated items for an on-site silent auction, including deluxe pet beds, art work and even an autographed Carey Price jersey, to help support the shelter.

Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Williams Lake Conservation Officers destroyed a cougar earlier this week that appeared to have been stalking mountain bikers on the Westsyde Trail System. “It was unfortunate that we had to destroy an animal, but we’re not taking any chances,” said Sgt. Len Butler of the young, healthy Tom that was treed and killed by officers Saturday after it stalked a bow hunter who was pushing his bike up a steep section of a trail. Butler said the first cougar complaint with bikers came in on Wednesday, Sept. 5, that a cougar had been following the last boy in a group of mountain bikers heading down the popular Lower Max trail Tuesday evening. In that case, Butler said the group ditched their bikes and left the area to return with a gun looking for the animal to no avail. C.O.s brought in a cougar hunter with See COUGAR on Page 2
