Fire destroys winter feed Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor A third generation ranching family is devastated after a weekend fire destroyed much of their winter cattle feed. Harvey Petal said he was first alerted to the fire Sunday morning when a neighbouring rancher saw the blaze, which had been set sometime overnight. The fire consumed the haystacks, burning 550 bales at a cost of $50 per bale. It also destroyed much of their cattle’s winter grass range. “Half the field is gone, up in smoke. It’s devastating, we’re all pretty sad,” said Petal, who risked his own life and equipment when he used his tractor and disc to stop the fire from spreading to the rest of the field and to other haystacks in the area overnight. “What I did was crazy but I had to do it,” Petal said, adding the blaze also took out a lot of fencing around the hay meadow and spread into the forest, where fire crews spent much of Thanksgiving Day and yesterday putting out the fire. The Petal family ranch is located at Anaham Reserve, just west of the main community. The R stacks and hay meadow were located about 8 st kilometres north of Highway 20. k RCMP are investigating the incident and Petal is asking anyone with information to contact police. p “I wish the people who did this knew how much effort it takes to put up all those bales.” m Petal said they are getting words of support from community leaders and the ranching comfr munity for the estimated $27,000 loss. m Adding to this loss, Petal said he and other ranchers are also concerned about cattle prices ra being affected due to the XL Foods plant closure b in Alberta. If anyone has information on last weekend’s fire, fi please contact Const. Shane Niemi of the Alexis Creek RCMP detachment.
