Random act of violence targets taxi driver and occupants Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The Christmas season here has seen no reprieve in the level of violence the city is known for, with an unprovoked assault on a taxi-cab driver and its passengers taking place on the weekend.

According to Insp. Warren Brown of Williams Lake RCMP, a taxi driver had stopped to pick up a fare in the 100 block of Yorston Street around midnight Saturday morning when a group of four or five First Nations

males approached the taxi cab driver's door and sprayed the driver and two female occupants with bear spray. “Immediate patrols located four suspects, who were arrested after a short foot pursuit with police,” Brown said in a news

release. “A machete along with another martial arts type weapon were seized.” Brown said physical injuries to the victims were limited to the effects of the bear spray. Suspects are known

Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor It would seem the City of Williams Lake is trying to upstage the Grinch this Christmas. After supposedly agreeing to a deal in writing and a costly referendum run by the CRD, the City of Williams Lake is apparently trying to back out of its fire protection deal with the CRD and its fringe residents, leaving regional staff stunned and scrambling to find a solution. “It’s fair to say everyone is shocked that the City is not honouring their commitment outlined in the letter,” said CRD chairperson Al Richmond. Richmond said

the City and CRD reached an agreement in November which he said saw the City agree to offer a five-year, approximately $130 per $100,000 accessed value contract for fringe residents, as set out in a formal letter. Fringe area residents even took to the polls in a referendum Nov. 24 to overwhelmingly support the deal. Last week however, on Dec. 12, Richmond said he received a letter from the City which stated it no longer wanted to make that deal, but instead could offer a one-year, $147 per $100,000 assessed value contract for fringe fire protection, bringing up the City’s forecasted

annual revenue from the fringe fire protection agreement from approximately $550,000 to $620,000. “It’s disappointing (to have this happen), particularly just before Christmas,” Richmond said. “It makes it very difficult to do business with them.” For its part, the City issued a one-line statement on the matter. “The City has received further correspondence from the Cariboo Regional District, which Council will consider tomorrow evening in a closed meeting,” stated the City. It’s quite likely in that councillors will

Bag of pot thrown at prisoner Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor A woman has likely landed herself in some legal trouble under the Controlled Drug and Substance Act, after tossing her commonhusband a bag of weed during court proceedings. The bizarre event took place yesterday in Williams Lake Provincial Court while a hearing was being

conducted for the incustody man for outstanding warrants. The man’s partner apparently “took the opportunity to throw a bag of marijuana into the prisoner’s box where he was seated.” Brown said the incident was witnessed by those in the courtroom and she was arrested at the scene for trafficking. “In my time as

police officer I’ve seen, and heard of a number of odd criminal offences but I have to admit this is definitely one of the stranger ones,” said Brown. “It’s important for people to remember that drug trafficking charges are very serious. Hopefully this woman will learn her lesson and not commit other criminal acts in the future.”

find the letter from the CRD “strong,” and one that raises the threat of legal action should they renege on their initial agreement. “We will leave no stone unturned to provide that (fire protection) service,” Richmond said. Richmond said the CRD does not want to engage in a fight with the City, and for now are waiting to hear council’s response after its meeting tonight - which takes place after The Advisor’s press deadline. “We’ll have to wait and see,” he said. The CRD won’t be waiting long however, as the current agreement for fire protection runs out Dec. 31.

No strike at Gibraltar At 4:58 p.m. last night, Gibraltar Mine management and the CAW Negotiating Committee reached a tentative deal averting a strike at Gibraltar Mine. Work will continue as usual by union members as the deal is ratified.

Pioneer Rudy Johnson celebrates his 90th year Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Pioneering families from across the Cariboo Chilcotin gathered at the Williams Lake Senior’s Centre Sunday to celebrate the 69th wedding anniversary of Rudy and Helen Johnson and also Rudy’s 90th birthday. The smitten couple were all smiles and giggles as they greeted many longtime friends and of course family Sunday afternoon. “It’s pretty exciting,” said Rudy. “I didn’t know I had this many friends.” Rudy was born in Sweden and came to Canada settling in the Fraser Valley while he was just a boy.

Bob Johnson, one of six children the couple had, said his mom and dad got married and operated a dairy farm at Matsqui before finding their way to the Williams Lake area in 1946, where Rudy built and ran several sawmills beginning at Soda Creek in 1946, then the 153 Mile area followed by the Beaver Valley area. In 1960, Bob said the family bought the Buckskin Ranch across the Fraser River, which at the time was quite isolated. Now, as the story goes, Rudy was spurred on to build a bridge across the mighty Fraser River after his beloved wife Helen

almost drown trying to cross the river one day. If you believe Bob, he says making money was the inspiration for the impossible feat. Either way, Rudy is credited for doing something no one else, not even the Ministry of Highways, dared to try. Using his plane to search for the best place to cross the river, Rudy then flew to Alaska where he found a bridge no longer in use. He bought the bridge, and disassembled it piece by piece, being careful to number each piece, and put it on a train bound for Williams Lake. The bridge was erected and used as a toll bridge until the Ministry of Highways purchased it for a reported $1 million. The bridge opened up access to the lands west of the Fraser, clearing the way for logging, recreation and of course ranching. Special visitors for the couple’s big day included Gerry Bracewell, the Kozuki family and ranching friend Ilsa Kellinghusen, who one owned the C1 Ranch at Alexis Creek.

Federal Review Panel requests much more from Taseko Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency review panel which has been charged with reviewing Taseko Mine’s New Prosperity project has certainly been busy in recent weeks. The panel has been corresponding with Taseko on a number of issues, including last month’s request for additional information following what it called “a major deficiency” on the approach used by Taseko to assess the cumulative environmental effects of the proposed mine. On Nov. 27 Taseko responded to the review panel stating that it in fact had all the information it was looking for in past documents, but the panel has stuck to its guns on its quest for more information. “Taseko narrowed the scope of its cumulative effects assessment in a manner that is inconsistent with the EIS Guidelines and the Act ... the Panel requires more information about cumulative effects to assess the project. Therefore, the Panel reiterates its request for Taseko to provide the information described in its information request (IR 1),” states panel chair Bill Ross in a letter Nov. 29. Since then, the panel has made further requests from Taseko

including a Dec. 10 letter which requests a lot of information on various topics in addition to the request on cumulative effects assessments. “The Panel is of the view that the additional information requested is necessary for the panel to determine if the EIS (Environmental Impact Statement) is sufficient to proceed to public hearing,” states panel chair Bill Ross Dec. 10. Those topics include everything from slope stability, cost analysis on options not put forth, data limitations due to test drill sites being abandoned following a court ordered injunction awarded to the Tsilhqot’in National Government Dec, 2011, to providing an assessment of the effects on amphibians and their habitat, namely on the Western Toad, a species of special concern; and the Great Basin Spadefoot toad, a threatened species to also providing baseline information on the endangered Rusty Cord moss and threatened Alkaline wing-nerved moss as well as the extent mitigation measures for grizzly bears will have on the South Chilcotin Ranges population and potential health effects on humans and potential risks of the contamination to foods grown in the area - just to name a few. In total there are 50

detailed information requests set forth in the Dec. 10 letter from panel chair Bill Ross to Taseko. On Dec. 11 the panel further requested that Taseko electroni-

cally share information with the Tsilhot’in National Government, and on Dec. 12 requested Taseko Mines provide a scale model of the mine during public hearings.

On Dec. 14 the Panel also requested specialists advice from Natural Resources Canada “to assist the Panel’s understanding of acid rock drainage.” Brian Battison, vice

Media promotes future tragedies I am convinced the American media, and possibility the whole country, is obsessed with death and tragedy. Last week there was another mass murder at an elementary school in the US. The

details of this sad tragedy are so horrific they are unspeakable. So why then, must we analyze and reanalyze this terrible, irreversible event on every media outlet, including our Canadian broadcasters, over and

over. Certainly it is not honouring the victims to report on the sad end to their young lives with such sensational coverage. All this does is plant a seed in someone else’s sick mind

to do the same. We don’t need that influence here. Please, do yourself and your country a favour. Do not watch this coverage, and do not let your children watch it. It will do no good.

Doomsday Friday? Hopefully the world does not come to an end Friday. The Mayan prophecy says on December, 21 2012, it will mark the end of the world. This date is regarded as the enddate of a 5125-yearlong cycle in the Mayan Long Count calendar. The calendar is made up of 394-year periods called baktuns, and experts estimate the system began counting in 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years on Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Mayans and the end of that cycle would be a cataclysmic or transformative event. Before all of you go spending your life savings on some last-minute exotic vacations or guilty pleasures, keep in mind that there is a strong possibility the world will not come to an end. No mainstream scholarship has accepted this proph-

ecy despite the various astronomical alignments and numerological formulas that have been proposed as pertaining to this date. The last thing I want for you is to gamble your future away on this false pretence and wake up the next morning broke and destitute. In China, some people are buying Noah’s Ark-type survival pods to survive the Friday’s “apocalypse.” Some online surveys suggest that one-in-ten people believe in the prophecy and Google has said the search for ‘Mayan 2012’ has had over 700 million hits, as much as the world’s most popular searches. One of my teaching colleagues had an interesting story when a student that told him there was no point in doing his homework because the world was coming to an end. “But what if it doesn’t?” the teacher replied. “Then

I’ll do my homework,” responded the student. As the clock ticks down to Dec. 21, experts on the Mayan calendar are rushing to convince people that the Mayans didn't predict an apocalypse, just a milestone event and not an end. The Mexicans are taking this prophecy serious enough that some leading Mayan archaeologists, anthropologists and other experts met Friday in Merida, Mexico to discuss possible implications of the calendar. This end-of-theworld concept has been done numerous times in Hollywood films. We all remember “Armageddon” and “Deep Impact” in which an asteroid is to destroy the Earth. There has been the alien invasion in films like “Independence Day” and “Battle of Los Angeles.” There was a feelgood film called “Blast

From the Past” in which a paranoid Christopher Walken stock-piles two decades worth of food and water in a fallout shelter during the Cuban Missile Crisis of the 1960’s. A plane crashes into the house while the family is in the shelter and they mistakenly believe it is a nuclear missile and his family can’t leave the shelter until the radiation is gone in 20 years. Three years ago John Cusack starred in the film “2012” which is about the Mayan prophecy. The almost three hour long film scored only a 5.8/10 on IMD but may likely see a resurgence in iTunes downloads over the next week with this idea fresh in our minds. Let’s hope the Mayan prophecy proves to be false as it would be just plain unfair to end the world during an NHL lockout.

Kingston Davis is all smiles as he plays in all the fresh fallen snow recently. This is the last week of school for all public schools before the Christmas break.

Stories remembered of Christmas morning and Christmas spirit “Christmas is almost upon us, time to get into the holiday spirit,” says Carmen. I casually remind her, that she was the one who wanted to take a hammer to the laughing Santa doll in the drug store. Its incessant Ho! Ho! Ho’s were getting on her nerves. Pity the poor clerks. Ignoring this, she put on some seasonal music to get me in the mood. I did feel a bit like dancing, but then, couldn’t remember the steps to Gregorian Chant. Thus begins my annual fight with the

Christmas lights, laying boxed in a tangled thicket. Whoever put them away (apparently full of Christmas cheer no doubt), unceremoniously tossed them in a heap with no concern for the poor slob who would inherited the mess the following

year. (Carmen accused me as the culprit on both counts.) In a fit of Christmas zeal she has been totally rearranging the house and moving furniture around to accommodate the tree. So far no one has got into a 'fit of pique' over it. It does give me a chance to pit my strength against the couch though. (This year the couch won). I look forward to the turkey dinner, always well put out by Carmen, so that we all feast in joy and merriment. I don’t look forward however, to

the Brussel sprouts that usually end up on my plate. (Personally, I think they should all be sent back to Brussels where they belong.) I feel bloated already, after eating too many Christmas cookies on top of Black Forest Cherry Cheesecake. “Don’t you have any will power?” says Carmen. “No!” I reply; “I left it in my other pants.” I’m also recovering from putting poultry spice on my rum and eggnog. I thought it was nutmeg. It does help if one puts on their glasses.

I tried to think of Christmas stories and a few come to mind. For one, I remember my sisters three kids waking up one Christmas morning, screaming down the stairs at high speed and overcome with excitement, opening up all the presents under the tree. My sister spent the rest of the morning trying to figure out who sent what to whom. Here I am reminded of a quote from, Roy L. Smith. "He who has not Christmas in his heart, will never find it under a tree." Passed on to me

was a true story that could well have taken place in the Cariboo and maybe some of you have heard it. Turns out a ranch family with little money to spare managed to scrape up enough for a few gifts for the kids and as the father was heading for town he got waylaid. He noticed a horse down by a creek trying to get water. It had been pawing away and had a big clump of ice surrounding its hoof and forelock. He knew it for a stray abandoned by its owners, so he deferred his mission,

went back and got a trailer and managed to get the bedraggled horse home and put it in the barn. Although he figured it might not recover from its ordeal. His children took a quick fancy to the animal and wanted to save it, so the gift money was spent on medicines. In the end, the horse turned into a wonderful pet and all thoughts of missed gifts had long left their minds. Leaving us with the thought, that the Christmas spirit invokes caring for all of God’s creatures as well.

A Big Thanks to Government Workers! Bob Simpson MLA Cariboo North Over the past few months I’ve been working on a number of very complex files, and I’m very appreciative of the support I’ve received from our public sector employees. I could not do my job as your MLA if I was not provided with such timely and thoughtful assistance on an ongoing basis. Whether I need briefings on emerging topics, the attendance of senior staff at either private or public meetings, or help with individual constituent issues, I’ve found our local public service managers and staff ready and willing to help. Even more so now that I’m free from the partisan politics that parties foist on our governance structures, which can make

our public service hesitant to assist individual MLAs for fear of reprisal. Few of us can imagine the pressures put on our public servants. They are the ones who have to roll with the changes created by politicians without their input, both when government changes hands and when the government attempts to redefine itself in advance of an election, as we are seeing now. They must also deal with people who are mad at the lack of common sense in government decisions, the lack of resources to assist people in need, and the lack of resources to simply do their job to the level the public expects. The public service is also an easy scapegoat for politicians who want to distance themselves from the

lic servants next spring in advance of the May election. Despite all of these pressures, I believe the vast majority of our public servants do everything they can to

serve the public interest to the best of their ability with increasingly fewer resources. I want to publicly thank them for that and let them know that I appreciate their efforts.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

There is a different feeling in the air at Christmas time! People just seem to be a bit happier, a little more thoughtful and more pleasant during the Christmas season. At Christmas time it’s like life was meant to be abundant and good. Even though it is a busy season and for sure there are pressures, it just seems somehow we elevate the Christmas spirit to get through this and keep the ‘good feeling’ glow. Feeling good also helps chase any blues away and provides us with a lot of warm fuzzies.

Full steam ahead at Gibraltar Taseko Mines Ltd. announced this week that the commissioning phase of the $325 million Gibraltar Development Project 3 (GDP 3) has begun. The electrical power distribution and reclaim water systems have been successfully tied in and are now operational and water testing of the new tailings system is underway.

Commissioning will continue into January and it is expected that first ore will be delivered to the new concentrator immediately thereafter, with commercial production targeted by the end of March. "In the twenty months since awarding the construction management contract, we have successfully built a new 30,000 ton-per-

day concentrator and associated infrastructure, on time and on budget for $235 million. This new concentrator, along with the $90 million of new state-of-the-art mining equipment, will increase Gibraltar's production capabilities to 85,000 tons per day by mid-2013. Gibraltar will have two distinct production trains which will significantly enhance our operational flexibility. As metal production increases over the course of the year while we ramp up our daily mill throughput, operating costs will decline from those experienced over the latter part of 2012," said Russell Hallbauer, President and CEO of Taseko.

City of Williams Lake manager of operations Reg Ryan, ICBC's road safety co-ordinator Diana Pozer, councillors Surinderpal Rathor and Laurie Walters, director of municipal services Kevin Goldfuss and Mayor Kerry Cook gather in last Friday's snowstorm to show off one of the City's new speed reader boards located on South Lakeside Drive. The city says the board will reduce crashes and save lives by reminding drivers to slow down.

Speed reader boards installed The City of Williams Lake and ICBC have partnered to place four speed reader boards on city streets. The boards will be located on South Lakeside Drive, Mackenzie Avenue, Pigeon Avenue between Gibbon Street and Comer Street, and on Foster Way. Speed reader boards have several benefits. They advise the motoring public of their approaching speed. They can be programmed in various ways that will warn motorists of speed limits and restrictions. The new speed reader

board will remind drivers to slow down, which, in turn, reduces crashes and saves lives. The boards operate 24 hours per day 7 days a week and provide data that is beneficial for making decisions on speed reduction, traffic calming, and traffic volumes . ICBC has purchased two of the boards, which will be placed on South Lakeside Drive and Mackenzie Avenue for one year. The boards provide valuable information that comes from the downloaded data. Data will further indicate how many

vehicles are driving by and at what times of the day. The reader boards will also show the driver what speed they are traveling and can be programmed to flash “SLOW DOWN”. After the one-year term, the City may place the boards at other locations. “This partnership will allow us not only to collect valuable data, but to help keep everyone safe on our roads,” says Mayor Kerry Cook. “These speed reader boards are valuable tools to help us make decisions and to increase

awareness for us all to slow down and arrive safely.” “We’re pleased to invest in new speed reader boards for Williams Lake to help keep the community safe,” says Diana Pozer, ICBC’s road safety coordinator for Williams Lake. “Speeding is the leading cause of car crash fatalities in B.C. and when combined with the poor weather conditions at this time of year, dramatically increases your risk of crashing. Slow down and allow extra travel time so you get home safely.”

Season’s greetings from the Mayor and Council On behalf of Williams Lake City Council, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas. During this busy season, my hope is for everyone to slow down enough to spend time with those family and friends that are so

important. This is a season of celebration, and I ask everyone to celebrate responsibly. Please don’t drink and drive, so that everyone can arrive safely wherever they travel this Christmas. Everyone can make a difference this

season – volunteer, or invite a guest to your table to spread some Christmas cheer and hope.I wish you all the best this Christmas, and a safe and prosperous New Year! Mayor Kerry Cook

Best wishes for a prosperous New Year

MLA Donna Barnett It’s hard to believe that Christmas is upon us already and a new

year is just around the corner! It seems as though the past year

has gone by so quickly, but as it begins to wind down, I’d like to take a moment and thank you all for the wonderful memories we have shared in 2012. Throughout the course of the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to participate in many interesting events and to meet with many wonderful people around our region. I had the chance to welcome government caucus to 108 Mile, to open the DriveABLE service in Williams Lake, to attend the Kids Running 4 Kids event, raising money for the BC Children’s Hospital and helping local kids, and much more. I am grateful to have had the chance to do all this, but most of all, I am grateful to have had the chance to meet so many of you. Speaking with constit-

Christmas display helps children’s charities If you’re looking to take in some of the beautiful Christmas light displays around the lakecity, don’t forget to stop in at Ken Berry’s house on Country Club Boulevard. This is Berry’s 14th year of fundraising for children’s charities through his light display and he offers new

additions to his theme every second day. This week, Berry put up 12 reindeer with lit collars that join the penguin fishermen, penguin light trail, the penguin 139 express and the Northern Lights. On Monday, Dec. 24. the log reindeer with rudolf at the lead will be coming out

pulling Santa and his sleigh. Berry said the 24th addition is a new tradition, as his grandchildren don’t let him set it up until they arrive for the holidays! To date this season, the Berry’s birdhouse has collected $395.73 so far and with the $277 from the golf balls he is at $672.72.

Holiday safety tips for your house pets No Bones Please: Avoid giving bones to your dogs or cats, particularly turkey bones. Poultry bones easily splinter and can cause serious injury, while bone fragments can cause intestinal blockages or lacerations.

Healthy Treats: Chocolate and other sweets should not be given to animals. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical that can be deadly to cats and dogs, though not harmful to humans. The best thing you can do for your pets over the holidays is to keep

them on their regular diet. Look for special animal treats instead of giving your animals cookies or sweets meant for people. Poisonous Plants: Many popular holiday plants are poisonous to animals includ-

ing mistletoe, holly, ornamental pepper and Christmas rose. Remember to keep these plants out of reach of pets - especially birds. Poinsettias are not poisonous to pets or people. This has been a long-standing rumour perpetuated for decades. Having said this, some pets, that have a sensitivity to the latex contained in the plant, may get diarrhea or even vomit if they consume a poinsettia. Avoid Tinsel: If you have a Christmas tree and pets, you have a recipe for trouble. First, make sure the tree is well secured. Try to place decorations above paw height and use string to hang the bulbs instead of hooks, which are easily dislodged. If possible, use nonbreakable ornaments.

Salvation Army hosts Christmas Day dinner Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor If you find yourself with no where to go this Christmas, or no one to celebrate with, the Salvation Army is opening its doors for a

lovely Christmas dinner. “You just need to want to be somewhere,” said Caption Randy Kadonaga of the Williams Lake Salvation Army.

amd s a m t is r h C y r r e M

Kadonaga said Christmas dinner will be served on Dec. 25 from noon until 2 p.m., and typically sees about 60 people come for dinner. “We have fun,” said Kadonaga, who says there is always singing and visiting taking place during the dinner. Throughout the year, the Salvation

Army provides assistance to about 2,000 families in Williams Lake and also offers breakfast and a soup kitchen during the week for the needy. This year, about 350 Christmas food hampers will be handed out in Williams Lake this Christmas between the Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the

Metis Society. Kadonaga said they also have about 250 children registered for gifts, who will each received one large gift, a smaller one as well as stocking stuffers, which will be handed out Dec. 20. Lake City Ford is also hosting a food drive for the Salvation Army at its Oliver Street showroom

Frostbite player Marcus Kennedy heads for 100 Mile's net during hockey action Saturday. Ten teams took part in the Atom house tournament last weekend.

2012 Atom House tournament Cariboo Memorial Complex was a buzz with more than 125 Atom hockey players competing in a Atom house tournament over the weekend. Williams Lake hosted five out-of-town teams, two each from 100 Mile House and Quesnel and one team from Prince George as well as the lakecity’s five local teams.

The Quesnel Green Gladiators took first place over the Prince George Atomic Devils by a score of 7-1 Sunday morning in the gold and silver medal finals. In a hotly contested final for third, the Quesnel Blue Thunder won against the Williams Lake Atomic Flyers 5-4. The Williams Lake Purple Panthers took

5th place, Williams Lake Gray Gangsters 6th, Williams Lake Frostbite 7th, 100 Mile Sunrise Ford 8th, Williams Lake Da Bombs 9th and 100 Mile South Cariboo Dental 10th. The owner of the local McDonald's, Jim Knowles, did the ceremonial puck drop before the final game and also handed out the 1st and 2nd place medals.

Atom division coordinator Geoff Price said the tournament was a great success thanks in large part to all the volunteers.

Members of the Williams Lake Blue Fins Swim Club and their families braved the snowy road conditions outside last weekend, to bring home some personal bests and medals in the pool. The club just returned from competing at a swim meet in Kamloops, where the club tied with Trail for the top small team competing, earning 12th spot overall. “They did extremely well,” said WLBF Swim Club head coach Chad Webb, noting the club's 22 competitors had a significant amount of personal bests and many new provincial and even

national age group times. “They had a great success percentage, with 90 per cent of the swimmers swimming personal bests.” Swimmers earning top 16 individual finishes against some of the best swimmers in the province were Ashley Beauchamp, Tracey Beauchamp and David Russell. Top eight individual results included Keanna Saunders, Maia Vitoratos, Liam McCreight, Mitchell Ryan and Leif Brandson. Webb said Coral Choi and Madison Blusson swam their way into the top medal hon-

ors with great performances in the 50 and 100 breast stroke, not only earning a silver and a bronze medal by Blusson and a bronze medal by Choi, but both also qualified for the Age Group Nationals in the 50 Breast stroke. Both girls had personal bests in these events and walked away with some impressive hardware against some very fast competition, Webb said. David Russell qualified for Provincials in the 50m freestyle which is in Victoria in March. Russell, Choi and Blusson all qualified for Provincials. Qualified swimmers for Provincial Trials in Surrey in February are: Tracey Beauchamp, Ashley Beauchamp, Danika Robson, Geneva Gordon, and Kara Zavitz. Webb said the meet was a huge success for the club only at the start of its season and he's very pleased with everyone’s results and the improvement. “This sets the tone for the first part of the year and gives the swimmers a great sense of pride knowing that their hard work is paying off. With only three months into the season, I am optimistic at some bigger improvements as we go forward after the Christmas break.”

Stamps glide to victory against Tomahawks

Sean Glanville photo

Matt Lees skates up-ice with the puck for the Williams Lake Stampeders. The Stamps picked up a big 9-6 victory over Lac La Hache Saturday. Sean Glanville Cariboo Advisor The Williams Lake Stampeders used four unanswered goals with two coming late in the second period and another two early in the third period to blow open a 5-4 hockey game into a 9-4 rout of the Lac La Hache Tomahawks Saturday night. The Tomahawks’ usually deadly powerplay was mediocre on their home-ice coming just 2-10. Roy Nichol needed just 41 seconds to put the Tomahawks ahead 1-0 in the first period. Francis Johnson answered for the Stamps at 4:49 to tie the game 1-1. David Gore put the Stamps in front 2-1 scoring at 7:46. Tyrel Lucas then added another a minute later at 8:48 to make it 3-1 Williams Lake. Robin Gilbert tallied at 11:45 for Lac La Hache to cut the lead to 3-2 heading into the first intermission. In the second, Brent

McIsaac scored on the power-play at 3:19 followed by Johnson’s second of the game 38 ticks later at 3:57 to put the Stamps well in front at 5-2. Lac La Hache’s J Sellars tallied at 7:49 to make it 5-3 followed up by Gilbert notching his second of the contest on the power-play at 9:38 to make it a one-goal game at 5-4. The Stampeders would tally two late markers with Lucas scoring his second of the game at 15:54 and McIsaac bagging his second power-

play goal of the night at 18:37 to put Williams Lake up 7-4 heading into the third period. In the third period Lucas completed the hat trick at 5:46 followed by Gore’s second of the night just a minute later at 6:49 to make it 9-4. Lac La Hache scored a pair of consolation markers late with Drew Rose scoring at 13:42 and Gilbert completing a hat trick at 18:22, his second power-play marker on the night. Justin Foote picked

up the win in net for the Stamps making 25 saves on 31 shots. Willie Sellars suffered the loss for Lac La Hache making 33 saves

on 42 shots. Players with multipoint nights for Williams Lake include Francis Johnson (2G, 2A), Brent McIsaac (2G), Aaron Zurak (5A), David Gore (2G, 2A), Stu Sasges (3A), Tyrel Lucas (3G), and Jassi Sangha (2A). Lac La Hache players include Robin Gilbert (3G), Wilfred Robbins (3A), and Drew Rose (1G, 2A). The two Williams Lake area teams are headed in the opposite direction as the Stamps have won their third game in a row to improve to a 9-3-1 (win-loss-overtime loss) record and 19 points. The twoweek Christmas break could not come early enough for Lac La Hache which has now dropped six games in a row. Their last victory came over a month

ago on November 16, a 4-3 shoot-out win over the Stamps. The Tomahawks were leading the CIHL East division at the time and now find themselves

below .500 with a 6-7-1 record and 13 points, six back of Williams Lake. They still lead Quesnel by two points although the Kangaroos have a game in hand.

TRU Foundation delivers $15,000 worth of good news to students Christmas came early for Thompson Rivers University North students last week. On Thursday, the TRU Foundation delivered $14,862 in

financial assistance from donor-sponsored awards to select students during a ceremony held at the Williams Lake campus. All told, seventeen students from a wide

range of programs benefited from the funds that were raised in their local community. Ray Sanders, Director of TRU Williams Lake welcomed the students and donors. “This ceremony

brings together organizations and individuals from the Williams Lake community who believe in the importance of learning and education – so much so that they commit themselves to provide money and support for TRU students,”

Saunders said. In 2011 the TRU Foundation raised $3.2 million dollars for students, buildings and programs at TRU. “This milestone could not have been achieved without the continued support of our donors and the

lives,” Sanders said. “This, I believe, clearly symbolizes what TRU stands for. We should all be very proud of what the people in this room represent for TRU, Williams Lake and for higher education in general.”

iN THEATRES THE HOBBiT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY 3D Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) must go on a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was conquered by the dragon Smaug. Unexpectedly approached by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Bilbo agrees to join a company of dwarves led by legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. The journey takes them through treacherous lands swarming with goblins and orcs, deadly wargs and giant spiders, shapeshifters and sorcerers and ultimately leads Baggins to finds a magical gold ring tied to the fate of all Middle-earth. Based on The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. JACK REACHER When six shots ring out during rush hour and five random people are left dead, a city is thrown into chaos. The evidence leads police to former Army Sniper James Barr, who tells police they have the wrong man and asks for Jack Reacher to be brought in. Suddenly what seemed like a simple case become complex. Reacher, a former Army Military Police officer, doesn’t care about proof or the law, he only cares about what’s right. He and Barr served in the military together and during their time in the Gulf War, Barr murdered four people and walked free on a technicality. Based on that experience, Reacher believes Barr is guilty. but Barr’s sister Rosemary, convinced her brother is being framed, enlists a young defense lawyer named Helen Rodin. When Reacher arrives, Barr has been beaten so badly he can’t even remember the day of the murders. Reacher knows the shooter missed one shot on purpose and he learns that in three years at a practice range, Barr never missed a target. Helen and Rosemary analyze the clues and try to convince Reacher that Barr could be innocent. As Reacher gets closer to learning the truth, someone tries to get Reacher off the case.

eggnog in the United States and hot, spicy wassail in England. Many people in Sweden drink glogg, a hot punch made with spices, liquors, raisins, and nuts and it can be so tasty. Favorite Christmas desserts in the United States include fruitcake, mince pie, and pumpkin pie. Plum pudding is traditional in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The French serve a Christmas cake called boech de noel, which looks like a min-

iature log. Italians finish their meal with torrone, , a candy made of egg whites, honey, and nuts. Fruitfilled breads called stollen are favorites in Germany. In Mexico and other Latin-American countries, thin, round pastries called bunuelos are usually eaten with cinnamon and sugar. Christmas dinners have been a ‘tradition’ of many a family. Perhaps that what we eat at Christmas dinner today, has been passed along to us by our grandparents and from their grandfolks before them. Christmas traditions in the kitchen influence the way we treat our tastebuds at this special time of the year when we generally have our biggest meal of the year and often with

family and friends. One item I like at any Christmas dinner is Sweet Potatoes. There are many ways to serve sweet potatoes however I suspect everybody has their own special way to put them on the table for this big dinner. This recipe is close to that which I can remember enjoying when I was growing up and it is a recipe both of my grandmothers used to put out on the Christmas table. Caramelized Sweet Potatoes Four medium size sweet potatoes, cleaned Two tbsp Olive oil One-half tsp seasoned sea salt Freshly ground black pepper One Tbsp brown sugar

Leo, many opportunities to entertain family and friends are on the horizon. Honor all of your commitments and enjoy all of the festivities. Virgo, while you aspire to have many friends, you just may find that there are only a few special people who hold the strings to your heart. It is okay to keep them close. Libra, sit down and enjoy some peace and quiet. You may enjoy the break from the frenetic pace you have been keeping the last few months.

Christmas cooking traditions can be the simple pleasures At some of the first Christmas feasts, people roasted boars, pigs, and peacocks over large open fires. Today, roast turkey is the most popular main course in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, people serve roast goose. Fish is the feature of Christmas Eve dinner in a number of countries. For example, Austrians eat baked carp and Norwegians dine on lutefisk (dried cod). Vegetables, relishes, hot breads, and a variety of other dishes accompany the main course of the Christmas feast everywhere. Popular beverages served especially at Christmastime include

Cancer, sad situations may come up, but you have a way of deflecting the situation and showcasing the bright side of things. You may find you are a person providing support this week.

One tbsp butter Rub potato skins with oil and sprinkle with pepper and salt. Place on a baking sheet and cook at 400 degrees until tender… 30 minutes approx. Remove and let cool a little bit then peel and cut each into several pieces. Butter a small baking dish and arrange potato pieces in a single layer sprinkle potatoes with sugar and dot with butter. Return to oven and bake until sugar melts and potatoes are glazed….should only take about ten mins. Take in the lights of town folks and remember…. SHOP LOCAL in Williams Lake.... MERRY CHRISTMAS everyone. Bye for now and GOOOOD COOKING

Ever an ideas person, Scorpio, now you have to put some followthrough into those plans. You can likely find a few friends to join you on your next adventure. Sagittarius, things certainly go on when you’re not around, but others may notice they just may not be as fun. You often lend joviality to anything you attend so spread your cheer. Capricorn, bide your time and you just may end the year on a bang. Don’t be afraid to add other things to your last-minute wish list because your goals just may be met. Aquarius, you enjoy social situations but that doesn’t mean you have to be the life of the party. Keep this in mind as you attend holiday gatherings. Pisces, while others are thinking about what presents they want under the tree, you may be thinking of how to give back to others.
