New Williams Lake school gets a new name
After a shortlist of names were put forth for students to consider, the SD 27 Board of Education decided Lake City Secondary will be the new name of the new middle/secondary school in Williams Lake.
The Board made the decision on the name for the new one school, two campus model at a special open meeting last night. At the meeting, trustees received survey results from students who had been asked for their opinion of
the shortlisted names which included Cariboo Crossroads Secondary, Cariboo Central Secondary and Lake City Secondary. After an in depth discussion regarding the names, trustees passed the motion declaring the school’s

Chilcotin Road and Kwaleen schools move forward GRAD Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor A barbecue and a new piece of playground equipment helped to break the ice as families from Kwaleen Traditional Elementary school came together with Chilcotin Road Elementary families last week to try to embrace the district’s new longterm plan. The plan, which upset parents and students for the better part of the school year while it went through the public consultation process, will see Kwaleen close in June after serving the South Lakeside Drive community for more than 60 years. Glendale Elementary school will also close its doors after serving the community for decades. The district is also trying to get a whole lot of work done in a short time to meet the Board’s goal of reconfiguring the high schools in Williams Lake, creating one open campus on two sites, with predominantly grades 7 - 9 housed at the Columneetza site and predominantly grades 10 - 12 at the WLSS location. The district was also expected to announce the name of the newly reconfigured Williams Lake campus at a meeting last night. The closures and reconfigurations are all apart of the School Board’s attempt to fill empty seats in schools and streamline education services as the local student population and provincial budgets trend downward. At Chilcotin Road, where portables have
return to the classroom, and Glendale's principal Matt Cullum will be moving to Chilcotin Road. SD 27 Superintendent Mark Thiessen said will result in some job loss, but exactly how much is yet to be seen. “We expect there will be some savings due to fewer teaching positions and other savings with fewer support staff positions being needed,” Thiessen said. “We won’t know all of these savings until the September.”

Sweeping changes made to School District 27 this year are starting to take shape on the ground. Such was the case at Chilcotin Road Elementary school last week where families from the closing Kwaleen Elementary school visited their new school, at Chilcotin Road Elementary school. The students were all impressed the school's new space ball equipment which the school fundraised for. been installed to house the expected influx of students from Kwaleen, a new piece of playground equipment seemed to capture the interest of new students attending the Kwaleenhosted barbecue last Wednesday evening. The space ball was installed at Chilcotin Road after more than two years of fundraising, and PAC President Tanis Rosa says the school has many people to thank. Rosa said the equip-
ment was made possible through donations from the Log Hauler’s Association, Williams Lake and District Credit Union, West Fraser Trucker’s Association, Subway, Gustafson’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep, various school fundraisers and even individual students like Devon Mellen, who donated money she raised from a lemonade stand last summer. It is World Environment Day this week and Rivers to Oceans next, so what better way to celebrate than making a difference in our own environment. School District 27 students are hoping to do just that during the month of June by painting yellow salmon on city storm drains to remind people to only
flush down the storm drain what they would be willing to swim in. That means no garbage or toxins. \ Storm Drain Art Sandwich Boards is another storm drain education tool the students are using in conjunction with the Cariboo Chilcotin Conservation Society this month. These art boards have students'
artwork displayed on them with a message again reminding people that there are fish and wildlife using the streams at the other end of our storm drains, and what goes down does not get treated. CCCS members will be placing some of these art boards around town today, Environment Day, to help spread the message.

TRU brings first two charging stations to Williams Lake Two plug-in hybrid vehicle charging stations are available for use at Thompson Rivers University. They are the first charging stations to find a home in Williams Lake. TRU received the money for the new stations through a $2.7-million community infrastructure fund that has installed 268 charging stations throughout the province. TRU in Williams Lake was given $8,000
to cover the cost of both stations. Prince George, Huston and Terrace are the only B.C. stations north of Williams Lake, making it an optimal place for users to charge their vehicles. The idea is not only for staff and students, but for visitors and community members attending events. The charging stations are currently operating free of charge and are available to the public.
Depending on the car, electric vehicles can travel between 70km – 130km on a single charge. They are a popular choice in metropolitan areas, but are becoming more common in rural areas as well.

Big Lake has big hearts Leave it to rural kids to be leaders of proper values and morals. Last year someone destroyed the CRD’s Big Lake Share Shed at the local transfer station. Share sheds are used at dumping stations so people can leave things they no longer want, for others to take for free and is a great opportunity to reduce waste, reuse and recycle and also help the less fortunate. Apparently, after the students at Big Lake Elementary heard the news they wrote letters to Electoral Area F Director Joan Sorely asking that a metal
shed be installed. The students even made a donation from their own winnings from the BC Green Games sponsored by Science World. The CRD met the students’ request, and now the Big Lake kids are working on murals and a plaque to complete the share shed project. Here is some of what the kids wrote to the CRD: “When we build the new Share Shed, we think if possible it should be made out of steel. We could make a plaque saying Big Lake Elementary donated a portion of the money, so maybe
they won’t try burning it down again.” -- Olivia MacDonald. “(The Share Shed) is almost like the Salvation Army, in the generousity of people. You should have seen the people’s kindness. The person who burnt it down must have been from a different town because I doubt anybody from Big Lake would have burnt down a building made completely from people’s hearts.” Ben Tudor. Way to go kids, and what a great example to help us celebrate World Environment Day today, Wednesday, June 5.
CRTC helps cellphone users
Earlier this week the CRTC announced a new code of conduct that may help level the playing field between consumers and Canada’s top three cellphone companies. The new code of conduct, announced by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, is supposed to stop cellphone companies from charging customers fees to break their contracts after two years and makes it easier to unlock cellphones so customers can shop around. The changes will come into effect for contracts signed after Dec. 2, 2013.
The changes were brought about after months of public consultation and years of complaints by overcharged and irate Canadians. Currently the top three cellphone companies in Canada Rogers, Bell and Telus -- dominate 94 per cent of the national market. According to the CRTC, the new code will allow consumers to: Terminate their wireless contracts after two years without cancellation fees, even if they have signed on for a longer term. Cap extra data charges at $50 a month and international data
roaming charges at $100 a month to prevent bill shock. Have their cellphones unlocked after 90 days, or immediately if they paid for the device in full. Return their cellphones, within 15 days and specific usage limits, if they are unhappy with their service. Accept or decline changes to the key terms of a fixed-term contract (i.e., twoyear), and receive a contract that is easy to read and understand. Predictably, the big three companies have reacted to the news by saying government regulation is never good and that they
already treated their customers fairly. I personally would argue otherwise, having experienced “bill shock” myself from a $400-plus cellphone charge during a brief trip to the States. As generous as we are, Canadians do reach a breaking point -- every time we turn around we are being overcharged on everything from clothes to books to gas. It was time for the CRTC to step in on this issue, now maybe the Federal government will do something about the inflated summertime gas prices.

The looming food crisis warrants community food plan Given the present circumstance of severe climate change, the increased cost of production and transportation, the price of food is skyrocketing. The United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization recently released the bad news, food prices are the highest they've ever been and they're going to get higher. The days of cheap food apparently, are numbered. More importantly is the loss of supply, with major food shortages on the horizon. The UN, The World Bank and the World Trade
Organization, all proclaim that a worldwide food crisis is imminent for 2013 and the years ahead. With world grain stocks at their lowest ebb ever, the World Food Program describes the current global food crisis as a silent tsunami,
with billions of people going hungry. A recent article in ‘The Walrus’ states that we are in the midst of a long-term systemic food crisis and that the global food system is riddled with failings. About 46 million people in the US are on their food stamp program, while FEMA has ordered a 7000% increase in survival meals. What do they know that we don’t? One of the culprits it appears, is that Wall Street is at fault for the spiraling cost of food. Goldman Sachs and other bank-
ing and financial institutions have come to realize there's money to be made speculating on food commodities. After the financial crisis in 2008 they began investing heavily in the food futures market and found a brand new casino of food derivatives. Food inflation has remained steady since. For the roughly two billion people across the world who spend more than 50 percent of their income on food, the effects have been staggering: the average Canadian family spends around 15 per cent. The total of the
world's "food insecure" has peaked at one billion -- a number never seen before. While the index funds continue to prosper, the bankers pocket the profits, while the world's poor teeter on the brink of starvation. An Oxfam report details how the poor will be even more vulnerable to climate change-induced food price shocks than previously thought. Support for local growers, community green houses and community gardens needs to be at the top of B.C.’s agenda. Also inducing
local farmers to plant unused farmland with stable crops would be a smart move. Further to this, wouldn't it be wise for B.C. communities to start building a food inventory starting now? Now if all this wasn't enough, we have a serious decline in the US and in many countries around the world, of a bees and other pollinators due to multifactoral causes, not the least of which, is the vast use of insecticides. The loss of bees has been estimate at 50 per cent in the US alone. We are staring right in the face of a complete
collapse of our food system and no amount of avoidance of this hard fact is going to make it go away. The reality of what’s occurring needs to be made real in the minds of people intent on preserving the status quo. More to the point, the consumption of food at its present rate, is not sustainable. Accordingly, we are putting on a conference on sustainable food systems here in 100 Mile House on Saturday June 15th. at the Martin Exeter Hall entitled “Looking ahead.”

Commuter Challenge and Clean Air Day Help reduce air pollution, improve your health, and save money during National Environment Week (June 2-8th). Lace up, oil that bike chain, carpool, take transit, or work from home! Look for ways to share, shorten or change your commute so you spend less time alone in your car and more time doing what you want to do. Be ‘in the know’ by carpooling with co-workers or friends. Or take transit where you can finally finish that novel, clean out your inbox, or make a new friend. By walking or riding your bike to work, your
commute can be your new (free!) gym. Motor vehicles create more air pollution than any other single human activity. In Williams Lake the air pollutant of special concern for our health is called particulate matter (PM 2.5 & 10) of which vehicle exhaust is a contributor. If everyone in Canada chose an environmentally friendly form of transportation one day a week, vehicle emissions would be reduced by 20 per cent. Using active transportation is one way to help keep our air clean. Take Part in the Commuter Challenge • A friendly
competition between Canadian cities and workplaces during Canadian Environment Week (June 2 – 8, 2013); participate every day or on Clean Air day (June 5th) • Celebrates active and sustainable transportation • Sign up online at www.commuterchallenge.ca . Record your sustainable commute(s) and the website will calculate your emission reduction impacts, calorie consumption, distance, and fuel cost savings.Benefits of Active and Sustainable Transportation • Enhances physical, mental, and
emotional health. • Reduce the air pollutants that negatively affect lung and heart health. Pollutants from many transportation sources aggravate respiratory disease, and contribute to property damage and acid rain. • Reduce the threat of climate change. Did you know that it takes 130 trees to produce the amount of oxygen needed to combat the carbon dioxide emitted from one car each year? • Enhance the quality of your relationship with the community and environment. Smell the roses, hit the local coffee shop, or
chat with neighbours on the way to and from work. • Save tons of money! Driving 18,000 km per year costs an average of $8,441.25 per year or 46.9 cents per kilometre (Canadian Automobile Association 2011 national average for a Cobalt LT). • Reduce health care costs for Canadians. It is estimated that transportation-related emissions will cost the health care system $11 billion to $38 billion between 1997 and 2020 (Transportation Association of Canada, 1998).

Public continues to air opinions on branding There has been a lot of interest in the Branding process here in Williams Lake. Recently, people who were upset at the ‘Republic of Life’ brand for the City, filled council chambers to voice their opinion on the selection of that name. There was a good cross section of the community at that meeting along with four former Mayors and one councillor. Council agreed to go to the public and to get more participation from those who were at the meeting and the community at large. Since then, Mayor Cook says there has been over 150 people respond with a variety of suggestions. Henry Van Soest a passionate Caribooster, sent a long letter to the City regarding the branding. Here is part

Almost all the quality jobs are and have been created by a sturdy bunch of folks. businesses that are reflective of local lifestyle pursuits, ‌ is like putting the cart before a large team of horses! Every community in Canada wants to attract young vibrant educated New Age consumers starting out in the world in need of everything. Williams Lake can not compete with Vernon, Kelowna, Surrey and the likes. We are an industrial town dependent on resource jobs to sustain an outdoor lifestyle. Consider our assets built up over 150 years, they are designed for hearty outdoors type people and need similar type thinking folks to purchase those homes, ranches and businesses in the future. Buying into our existing life style has made the region a success in the past and will continue
to do so. Attempting to reinvent the wheel and turn Williams Lake into a condensed city of artists, walkers and cyclists will take far more effort and resources competing with most southern communities and alienate the majority. Look around and count the number of campers, boats, atv’s, motorcycles, snowmobiles, horses, 4x4’s, and you will see the group we need to attract, “like mined folks are the key to our future. Targeting northern folks who want a warmer living zone is more in tune with our real life style and assets. Northern types who have made wealth in the oil and gas patches have money and are far more likely motivated to start value added natural resource industries which are the key job types required

Mangat will put his undefeated record (3-0) on the line when he battles Washington State’s Jordan Mackin (1-0) for this Bantamweight (135 lbs) bout. “I don’t know much about him (Mackin), he’s an explosive guy and a tough dude coming from a good camp in the states,” says Mangat. “I’ve been working hard and I’m excited to be back in my home province.” Mackin’s greatest threats are his height and reach which he will have an advantage. “I spar with guys a lot taller in training and don’t have an issue. I’m comfortable wherever the fight goes whether it’s stand-up, wrestling, or jiu-jitsu.” Mangat, 26, has been training for the past year at arguably the greatest MMA camp on the planet, Tristar Gym in Montreal, Quebec. The world-renown gym is home to UFC Williams Lakereg Gary Mangat will .put record on the line at legend Georges boat St. motor 79-8584 349.99 – 289.97 ok, his sendundefeated me a proofprofessional please. Mangat trains star Rory Macdonald, at Tristar Gym in Montreal, Quebec with the likes of UFC champion Georges St. Pierre.
at the time, knew if he was going to take his sport to the next level needed to make the permanent move to Montreal. “It was the hardest thing I’ve done. Before I thought sacrifice meant not going to parties and that stuff but packing up and leaving my family, friends and a comfortable way of life taught me the true meaning,” explains Mangat. “Every aspect of Montreal outside the gym has been uncomfortable, from the language to not knowing anyone, especially during the winter. In the end it will make me stronger and my spirit will grow.” Initially Mangat was a bit starstruck training with the likes of GSP. Tristar is home to many UFC fighters and usually has at least one guy on every UFC fight card. “At first I was a bit in awe and I make sure I never forget how far I’ve come, but if you give the guys too much respect in training and don’t go hard you won’t improve,” says Mangat matter-of-factly. Mangat trains two to three times per day and only takes Sundays off to relax the mind. He lives in the very French speaking suburb of Laval and says he is working on his French. “I’m having a hard time with
it (French) - when I’m on the subway I try to translate the newspaper but when I hear Georges and the guys talking in French I don’t have a clue,” laughs Mangat. Mangat is trying to become the first fighter of Indian descent to make it to the UFC. He has learned to harness the pressure of being a role model to a huge South Asian population effectively. “I understand what I represent and I use the inspiration of all the Indian people when I spend those extra hours in the gym,” says Mangat. “The haters used to get to me and I had trouble dealing with pressure but now when I get butterflies I make them fly in formation.” Mangat, a Columneetza grad, is one of the many outspoken MMA fighters regarding wrestling being removed from the Olympic Games. “It’s so messed up – it’s not a sport but a lifestyle – wrestlers are the hardest guys to break down and are mentally so tough,” adds Mangat. “It’s what the Olympics are all about - hard work, sacrifice, pain, sweat, blood.” Tickets to the event are available at www.battlefieldfl.com and range from $35$100.

Quesnel boys Luke Johnston, Nick Jawanda, A.J. McKenzie, Lliam Coombs and Dustin Karolat arrive at the head of the Snakes 'n Ladders mountain bike trail for a ride Sunday morning. The men said they come to Williams Lake just about every weekend to ride the Westsyde trails, then go out for lunch before taking in Fox Mountain trails in the afternoon and heading home. This weekend the South SIde trails will be the main focus of attention, with the annual Pedal by the Puddle enduro-style race taking place.
Register by Friday for Pedal by the Puddle Mountain bikers are gearing up for the annual Pedal by the Puddle enduro race, set to take take this Sunday, June 9th. More than 150 riders are expected from around the province of all abilities to take part in the race, which happens over six hours on a 10-kilometre loop on Williams Lake's classic singletrack on South Lakeside. The object of the event is for riders to complete as many laps as possible before the end of the event, but the real draw for bikers is to have some fun riding the trails and to enjoy the camaraderie of other members of the mountain biking community. For those familiar with the trail network the route includes sections of Rotnee, Twizzler, Cabin Loop, the South Lakeside Ridge, Moose Drops, the old Gun-A-Noot downhill, Guiness and Leppard Spots. Last year overall entries were 165. This year's course will mostly resemble last year's
route with a short new section to keep things fresh. Also, like past Pedal by the Puddles, kids of all ages will be able to get in on the action in the "MiniPedal" — a short, easy event with the emphasis on participation and fun. This year special guest announcer Brett Tippie is returning. Originally from Kamloops, Tippie is a freeride mountain biking legend and, more recently, has moved into event announcing having emceed such noted events as the Whistler Crankworx. The event is open to anyone of any age who wants to enter; however, some degree of experience riding mountain bike trails is necessary to enjoy the course safely. Directions to the course start are posted on the event website at www.pedalbythepuddle.weebly.com. The course is already marked with race logo signs for anyone interested in taking a test ride. The enduro format
is intended to encourage participation from as wide as possible a range of rider experience and abilities — especially riders who may have never raced before but are looking to challenge themselves. Net proceeds from the race will be donated to local charities, and volunteer positions are available. To volunteer contact
Scott Gordon at 250392-5177 or e-mail barkingspidermtb@ hotmail.com. Due to the complex timing system involved with the enduro format of the race, riders must be entered into the system ahead of time so no race-day entries will be accepted. Deadline for registration is Friday, June 7 at Barking Spider
Mountain Bikes on Oliver Street. Race start is 10 a.m. Sunday, June 9. Riders are asked to be there by 8:30 a.m. to register, get set up for the day and to get final instructions. For more information, including a video of parts of the course, visit www.pedalbythepuddle.weebly.com.

HOrOscOpe Don’t make assumptions this week, Aries. You just can’t trust your gut instincts too much right now. It’s better to get all of the facts and act accordingly. Playing matchmaker isn’t so easy, Taurus. You have to understand when people are compatible and when there just isn’t a spark. Let this one go. Gemini, you may have to pull back your focus on a problem in order to see it in a new light. Take some time away to regroup and then you can come back at full strength. A romantic relationship can be a balancing act, Cancer. You will learn this first hand this week when you have to come to a compromise with your partner.

Last Week’s Answers
Virgo, while others may not be able to handle the confusion this week, you are fully capable of multi-tasking and making it through unscathed.
Season your next meal with a touch of the great outdoors Cooking outdoors on a campfire can be fun, tasty and easy, just make sure the ingredients for the meal is prepared ahead of the camping trip, because there are not many corner stores out in the toolie weeds. I find the best time to cook anything is when the coals are really hot... perhaps around 600 degrees. Start the fire and let it burn down to the hot coals and you are good for cooking. One of the best things you can take out on a camping trip is a large cast iron deep frying pan or a pot. The cast iron distributes the
to make outdoor dish.
heat evening and keeps warm longer after it is taken from the fire. It is easy to cook three meals a day on the campfire...breakfast, bacon or sausage with eggs and a piece of toast. Lunch could be a simple hot dog with some nice cooked onions and for dinner, you could do this easy
Pot Pie in a Pouch This makes one serving... Cooking spray or some cooking oil ⅓ pound of ground beef 1 small diced potato Choice of veggies such as green beens, carrots, onion, green pepper, almost anything you like. Salt and pepper Aluminum foil Before the cooking starts, you’ll need a bed of hot coals to work with and some aluminum foil. Lay the foil flat, spray it with some cooking spray, and place all of your ingredients in
Leo, don’t apologize if you feel like you have to go your own way this week. Even when everyone seems to be going in another direction, sometimes you just have to set your own course.
Libra, you may feel more emotionally charged this week but you still have to think with your head and not your heart. A financial decision may need to reassessed. Scorpio, look at a situation with a practical eye. Is this really the best answer for the time being? Although you may be leaning one way, you might want to reconsider. Sagittarius, you need to get work done this week and that can’t happen when you are continually distracted. You might have to nip this one in the bud -- quickly.
the center together, separating the ground beef into pieces so you don’t end up with a semi-raw patty. Then, fold up the foil so it encloses the ingredients in a pouch form, and simply place the pouch inside the bed of coals. Keep in mind that it’s very hot in there, so you’ll need to check the enclosure early and
often. Cooking time is roughly 15 minutes, depending on the coals’ temperature. Hope you get some time to enjoy the great Cariboo outdoors this spring and summer and make sure you try some campfire cooking. All food seems to tasty better outdoors. Bye for now and Goood Cooking.
A friend needs your support more than ever, Capricorn. Go to great lengths to give this person what they need, even if it means rearranging your schedule. An email or other correspondence from a past friend could stir up feelings you weren’t ready to deal with right now, Aquarius. Put this on the back burner until you are ready. Pisces, you are more interested in independence this week than hanging out in large groups. This includes hanging out with your spouse or partner.
