City hit by powerful summer storm Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor A powerful summer storm sent Williams Lake residents running for cover Saturday afternoon, causing power outages and flash flooding that left homes and businesses in the city with extensive water damage. “We were just lucky that we came back into town,” said Chris and Amanda Blomgren, whose son Mackenzie's U12 soccer tournament was cancelled after the storm hammered the fields at Esler leaving kids scrambling to the clubhouse for cover just after 12:30 p.m. The Blomgrens arrived at their First Avenue home shortly thereafter to find a wall of water, mud and debris collected from throughout the city that had swept down the back alley, knocking over fences and moving asphalt as it escaped through businesses to MacKenzie Avenue below.

But not before making its mark on the Blomgren's home (almost to the door knob in fact), entering the basement where it damaged floors and drywall, ruining the children's playroom. “The toys are just covered in mud,” he said. The storm was also to blame for disrupting activities at the Stampede Grounds,

the Two Ladies Classic Golf Tournament as well as downtown business while hydro crews worked to restore power, and even caused a motor vehicle accident due to reduced visibility. This week, several businesses and residents are continuing their efforts to repair the damage caused by the short, but powerful storm.

Suspected criminals involved in fatal roll over

Williams Lake RCMP are still putting together the pieces of an investigation stemming from a single vehicle accident early Monday morning involving a stolen truck, several suspected criminals, and which caused the death of one young Williams Lake man. According to Const. Lesley Smith, more details have come to light following the single vehicle fatal accident on Chimney Lake Road which saw a 22-yearold man from Williams Lake die on scene after being ejected from the vehicle, and a 21-yearold passenger sustain serious injuries and who is currently in critical condition and the driver steal another vehicle and flee the scene. Smith said upon responding to the initial report of the accident, Williams Lake RCMP determined that the Dodge Ram pickup truck involved in the crash was stolen from Grand Prairie, Alberta. “The suspects had replaced the truck’s license plate with a stolen one from Chetwynd, BC. It is believed that alcohol and excessive speed were factors in this accident,” Smith stated, noting in all five males were involved in the incident. After the accident, the 21-year-old driver and one of the passengers fled on foot and stole another vehicle, a Toyota Tundra, from a nearby residence. After a brief pursuit and with assistance from Police Dog Services, both males were appre-

hended and taken into custody. A third was arrested on scene without incident. After learning of their real identities, it was further determined that both males who fled are from Alberta and the driver had outstanding warrants from that province, Smith said. Items found in the stolen truck were a .22

caliber firearm, a knife and brass knuckles. Preliminary investigation reveals that this group of males is also responsible for other property offences and various fraudulent activities in the Williams Lake and surrounding areas. Police are not releasing names of suspects, injured or the deceased.

the public to participate in the environmental assessment process and offer their views on the project and its relationship to the future of the Cariboo region. The hearings will take place in Williams Lake and surrounding communities. Once the public hearings conclude, the Panel will have a maximum of 70 days to write and submit a report to the federal Minister of Environment. The Government of Canada will then have a maximum of 120 days to decide if it should grant the necessary authorizations for the project to proceed. This is the second attempt in the company's bid to develop the controversial project, located 125 km southwest of Williams Lake. Taseko's first proposal was rejected by the federal government citing significant environmental impacts to the area. Local First Nations

are strongly opposed to the project, while Taseko says they have made changes to further safeguard the environment and that that project will bring renewed wealth to the area. For more information on the New Prosperity Project and for updates on the Panel Hearing, visit the CEAA's website.

Wise Owl owner this year’s Parade Marshall Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Sandy Fehr, the face of Williams Lake's only downtown toy store, says she was “shocked” and “humbled” when she was asked to be the parade marshall for the 2013 Williams Lake Stampede Parade. “I'm just me. I felt like they they should have picked someone more important,” Fehr said of her first reaction to the news. “But it really is an honour.” This year's parade

theme is Fun N' Games and no one represents that theme better than Fehr and her husband Jim, who have become a mainstay in the downtown core for the last 11 years with their well loved store Wise Owl Toys. The couple support many local children's charities throughout the year and that sense of community pride will be on full display at the Downtown Street Party Saturday afternoon. Fehr will be racing back to the store as soon as the parade is over to make sure their outdoor 'imagination market' is ready to go for families. The store will be offering crafts for boys and girls, a lawn chess set and several tables set up with games for families to play during the

Cariboo GM and Horsepower Hooligans host the second annual Soapbox races Friday night, attracting many racers including Westen Becker and his dad James.

Man stabbed while protecting friend Williams Lake RCMP responded to approximately 85 calls for service over the weekend. This included numerous calls to assaults, motor vehicle incidents, noisy parties and more. Saturday, June 22 At 2:55 a.m. police were dispatched to Cariboo Memorial Hospital (CMH) where a stabbing victim had just arrived. The injured party stated that he was defending his friend at a pub in Williams Lake and did not even realize he was stabbed. The male victim says he did not see who stabbed him. Police then located another injured male on 2nd Ave. with a laceration to his collar bone as a result of the same incident. That individual was transported by EHS to CMH. Witnesses indicated that the perpetrator of the stabbing of both individuals was a Caucasian male. The incident is currently being investigated. At 3:59 A.M. Williams Lake RCMP responded to report that a car had exploded near Westridge DrIve. Police located the burning car on Woodland Drive near Westridge Drive. A trail of oil could been seen approximately 50 meters from the Westridge Drive intersection on Hwy 20 to the burning car. The car was extinguished by the fire department. The subsequent investigation revealed that the vehicle had been stolen from a residence. The matter is still under investigation. At about 1:43 p.m., Williams Lake RCMP received a complaint of an MVI in front of 730

Oliver St. The report was that there was an MVI with injuries. Police attended and located a blue Pontiac, which had rear ended a grey Chrysler. Both drivers were taken to hospital with neck/back related injuries. Two passengers in one of the vehicles, due to their age, were taken to hospital for precaution. Police spoke with a witness on scene. It appears that the collision was due to the torrential rains that had fallen. No charges. At approximately 7:55 p.m. a complaint was made to Williams Lake RCMP that a vehicle's passenger side window had been smashed while parked at the Senior's Center located 1455 Western Avenue in Williams Lake. The owner of the vehicle was located

and it was determined that nothing had been taken. A suspect identified in the vicinity could not be confirmed as being responsible for the damage. Sunday, June 23 At 9:03 a.m., police responded to a report from the owner of a vehicle that both rear tires were punctured on their vehicle which was parked on 4th Ave North. Neighbors in the area also apparently have flat tires as well. The matter is still under investigation. At 12:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a collision on Falcon Road near Blake's Moving and Storage with emergency health services on route. The driver was located with head injuries and transported to the hospital by EHS. The matter is still under investigation.

Jason Ryll Marketing/Media Relations Sometimes in your career path, you just find your calling. That seems to be the case with Gary Escott of Escott Kitchens and Tops. Before becoming an entrepreneur, his own work history had been quite extensive. With a variety of experience in different work environments it was difficult to secure a career that would support his family. In 1997, he picked up and moved from the Fraser Valley to Kelowna. Unsuccessful in finding suitable employment, he decided to head back to school. At Sprott Shaw College he completed courses in sales, marketing and computer maintenance. But the challenge didn’t end there. Even with the help of that training he was still having difficulty in securing sustainable employment. Then, in December 2007 came his decision to move his family to the Cariboo. In the Cariboo, he worked for couple of

Williams Lake brought to you by:

After being laid off by his employer came the soul-searching, and then a family discussion, and it was decided that he would take an opportunity to participate in the Community Futures Self-Employment Program. With the help of the Self-Employment Program and the staff at Community Futures, he learned the foundations of starting up a small business. They offered help and knowledge that would have taken years to learn on his own, when it came to the skills needed to

run your own small business. The financial assistance was very helpful and without it, that critical first year in business would have been even harder. With that education, support and his 30 years cabinetry experience he was able to open the doors of Escott Kitchen and Tops in July 2012. All eyes on the floods Many of us watched in disbelief last week as the City of Calgary and several outlying communities were ravaged by flood waters. The events began to unfold late Thursday as a storm that began in Denver Colorado days before dumped record amounts of rain on the southern Alberta Rockies and nearby foothills in a short 48 hour period. The results have been both swift and catastrophic, with lives lost in the community of High Level, millions of dollars worth of homes lost in communities such as Canmore, and a decade of infrastructure washed away in mere hours in Calgary. Most residents on

the news were seen walking around in complete disbelief that such an event could happened in their safe and conservative world. Power is still out to much of the downtown core and the damage is just starting to show itself as the flood waters recede. City officials say they are still planning to host the World Famous Calgary Stampede starting July 6 but just how they're going to pull that one off remains to be seen. The Saddledome was flooded up to the 12th row seating and has destroyed the facility's locker rooms, kitchens, heating and cooling systems, Jumbotron and more.

The Stampede Grounds in Calgary are still very heavily flooded. Can a city, even as rich and as tenacious as Calgary, undo in days and weeks what Mother Nature dealt in mere hours? That remains to be seen. And as we watched the madness in Calgary, pondering that not much ever happens in Williams Lake, we were hit with flash flooding ourselves Saturday. Our mini-crisis happened around 12:45 p.m. when a massive storm hit the city, hammering the area with lightning, heavy rains and hail the size of marbles in some neighbourhoods. From kids playing soccer at Esler, to ladies

on the golf course to the barrel racers in the Stampede Grounds – everyone was left scrambling to get out the storm's way. Within minutes, the heavy downpour caused traffic accidents, damage to roads and vehicles and flooded businesses and homes in the downtown areas that are still be cleaned up this week. So, while we may have thought we'd be safe from flooding because we don't have a river running through our fair city, Mother Nature gave us a small reminder Saturday there are many other ways communities can be devastated by our increasingly volatile weather.

Let's get ready to rodeo at the 87th annual Stampede There is excitement in the air as we near our 87th annual Williams Lake Stampede. City crews are out pruning trees, primping flower baskets and polishing up the city streets as hundreds of volunteers get ready to greet visitors for our biggest event of the year. This year's rodeo action promises to be

exceptional, according to Stampede President Fred Thomas, with the addition of a fifth rodeo performance Friday at noon. This performance was added to draw more top cowboys from far away places like Texas, so they can compete here Friday, then head off to other rodeos on the same weekend throughout Alberta.

It will be a full show, complete with the Clown Act (minus the Mountain Race), no reserved seating and a good deal on tickets. Don't miss it. Of course, Saturday is the Williams Lake Stampede Parade which is always good family fun and there is a downtown street party to follow. If nighttime enter-

tainment is more your thing, the Let R Buck Saloon is always lots of fun with outdoor live entertainment behind the grandstand starting Friday night. On Monday, there will also be Canada Day celebrations in the park to help us celebrate our beautiful country. Have a safe and fun weekend everyone.

Drawing signs in the dirt tells a tale of who you are Finally, summer baseball had arrived! It was the bottom of the 3rd inning, and sweltering hot in Mobile, Alabama. I was far from home, and excited, but so far the game was a dull one. No one seemed to recall if he played for the All Star team, or if he was with the Bay Bears. It is lost to me what his jersey number was, or even whether he hit or scored. But amid the stadium waves, choruses of “Charge!” and constant parade of lemonade, pizza, peanuts

Living out Loud with Rita Corbett and beer, a young man in a dark shirt, whitestriped baseball pants and a batter’s helmet left the dugout and crossed the grass strip, heading toward the batter’s box. He car-

ried a bat, though for what he was about to do he could have used almost anything. He said nothing. I never even saw his face; but what he did next captured me completely. Just before he stepped up to bat he drew a cross in the dirt. Everyone saw that cross, but the game went on as if nothing had happened. Nothing was said over the public address system about the cross. Perhaps it made little difference to most of the crowd in the stadium, anyway.

Everyone saw that cross, but the game went on as if nothing had happened.” - Rita Corbett

But he aroused my envy. Someday I hoped that would be me. It wasn’t recognition or public scrutiny that I craved. And as last pick in schoolyard sports, certainly I had no desire to play in the major leagues. My envy came simply from seeing a fellow human who had found a way to display something

important to him without displaying himself. After my last inning, I don’t want to be remembered for what side I was on, or how many times I won. It will matter very little who I am or what tools I used to present what is important to me. It could be a scalpel, art, a wooden

bat or words. Very few will wonder how many people knew me or read an amateur column. From my point of view, the only thing that will count is if I draw a clear picture of what is important, while I am here, in the dirt. I suppose sliding into a celestial future could be considered the ultimate “home run.” Upon arrival, this believer wants to meet all those folk who profited this planet by what they carved in the dirt while here. It could be crosses,

or service, or just encouragement for fellow travelers. When all that is left of our earthly game is sweeping up, what pictures will remain? Honestly, it would make my heavenly day to hear just one person say, as I quietly slipped away, “You know, I don’t remember who she was, but while I was on earth, someone drew a picture in the dirt, and it captured me completely. It was the simplest drawing of a cross.” LOL@ caribooadvisor.com.

HELP THE CITY SAVE WATER AND THE ENVIRONMENT WITH THE: LOW FLOW TOILET/APPLIANCE REBATE PROGRAM

Mayor Kerry Cook, Williams Lake RCMP Inspector Warren Brown, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving Williams Lake chapter president Pam Herman next to one of the new signs at Scout Island, Chimney Lake, and throughout the city encouraging residents to report impaired drivers by calling 911.

Many homes in Williams Lake are equipped with older toilets, dishwashers or clothes washers that require more water to operate. New low flow toilets and appliances require much less water while doing the same function. By replacing your old toilet and appliances, you could use up to one-third less water! That could save the average household more than 300 liters per day, or 100,000 liters per year. The City is offering a MAXIMUM of two rebates per residential unit per year. 1. Toilets using 4.8 liters or less, with a Maximum Performance (MaP) Tested approved new low flow fixture. Visit website www.cwwa.ca/freepube.asp to view. 2. Dishwashers that are on the approved list on the City’s website. 3. Clothes washers that are on the approved list on the City’s website.

Celebrating Legion Week In honour of our Veterans

ROYAL CANADIAN BRANCH 139 KEN WILSON This is Legion Week in British Columbia. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 139 in Williams Lake are using this time to blow their own horn. To show the community we are more than just a Remembrance Day organization who sells poppies, or a place for a couple of ‘old farts’ to have a brew once in a while. Branch 139 President Joyce Norberg says that most of the money raised in Williams Lake through Legion activities goes back into the community. The president stated she was delighted to be able to present some cheques to local organizations and individuals who need some financial assistance. These funds, states Norberg, are in addition to the money raised though the annual Poppy campaign, which is reserved for veterans services and other specifically authorized uses. The Royal Canadian Legion in Williams Lake has donated several thousand dollars this year to local groups and others like the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy, Parkinson Disease, and Juvenile Diabetes. Locally, the donations include, Williams Lake Dry Grad, Little Britches Rodeo, Williams Lake Stampede Queen Committee, The Williams Lake RCMP Youth Academy, Cariboo Caledonia Pipe Band, and Cataline School Intergenerational program. These young students are learning

to interact with seniors at Retirement concepts and some of their classes are also held in the centre. Money is also going to the Girl Guides for Tashina Matilpi, a 15 year old who is going on a mission to Kenya Africa to help dig irrigation ditches for a small village to aid them in their struggle for clean accessible drinking water. Operation Smile in Williams Lake, also received a contribution from the Legion. There will be more donations throughout the year. President Norberg says Branch 139 is a strong Legion and they are attracting new members in Williams Lake and area because of the Legion’s continuous involvement in the community, especially by supporting funding programs for young people in the city and area. The President says the Legion is also offering more food service such as steak nights for Veterans and Associate members at the Branch on Barnard. Branch 139 Royal Canadian Legion in Williams lake is again part of the Williams Lake Stampede and are entered in the Parade. The Legion is also having Pancake breakfasts, steak nights and on Canada Day the Legion Colour Party, the WL Pipers along with Cadets, will be at Boitanio Park from 2-4 pm.

ing with the City of Williams Lake. The last time was when the MADD Memorial Garden was built in Boitanio Park. Now, with the support of Mayor and Council, Inspector Warren Brown and the RCMP detachment, and Director of Municipal Services, Kevin Goldfuss, we have put up ten Call 911 signs around Williams Lake and a Report Impaired Boating sign at Scout Island. “Williams Lake is proud to bring this important program to our city,” says Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook. “With every impaired driver stopped, you are potentially saving a life or preventing an injury. Everyone has a role to play in keeping our roads and communities safe.” Impaired driving claims between 1,250 and 1,500 lives each year. Another 63,000 people are injured in impairment-related crashes. Alcohol is a factor in more than 40% of boating fatalities,

37% cent of boaters in Canada admits to consuming alcohol every time they boat, and

Signs help get drunk drivers off the road A campaign has been launched in Williams Lake recently in an attempt to encourage the public to report drunk drivers and boaters. “Call 911 gives citizens an important way to help police take impaired drivers off our roads, and sends the message to impaired drivers that other motorists are watching and will report them to police,” said Pam Herman, MADD Williams Lake Chapter President. Programs encouraging the public to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers and boaters have been successful in communities across British Columbia. Comprehensive RID 911 programs with appropriate signage in good locations, along with education and awareness about the programs, increase calls to report impaired driving and increased charges resulting from 911 calls. “Once again, the Williams Lake Chapter of MADD is partner-

Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor If you’re wanting to see top rodeo talent performing in a classic western venue, fans need to look no further than this weekend’s 87th annual Williams Lake Stampede. With world class cowboys signed up for an added 5th performance, and thousands of dollars spent enhancing the grounds, the Stampede is sure to impress. “The Stampede just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger,” says 20 year Stampede Association President Fred Thomas, a fixture at the rodeo. “Compared to 20 years ago, it’s a small business now.” True enough, the Williams Lake Stampede has a $700,000 budget this year and will hand out $160,000 in cash prizes by Monday night. In the last eight years alone the association has given back $1.5 million into improving the facilities, which has

put on a quality show. “We’re never going to be as big as Calgary but we all want to continue the tradition of putting on the best show we can,” he said. Big on that list is scheduling the new rodeo performance Friday at noon to compliment the 6 p.m. rodeo, which has helped attract some of the world’s best cowboys. It will be a full rodeo line up, minus the mountain race, with very affordable tickets and no reserved seating “It’s really a win-win for everyone,” Thomas said. “Of the top 20 cowboys in the world, we’ve got seven or eight of them in every category this weekend.” Cowboys to look for in the Friday afternoon performance include Trevor Brazile and Tuf Cooper of Decatur, Texas. Former local Lee Graves is set to compete Saturday while it’s rumoured that our favourite goalie, Carey Price, may be at the rodeo again this year. Thomas said Friday rodeo fans are encouraged to wear red to show support for our armed forces, and Sunday is Tough Enough to Wear Pink, which raises money from rodeo ticket sales and raffles for cancer charities. Sunday and Monday morning down at the grounds, Roy Call will be available to give their Animal Athletes tours to those interested in an up close and personal look at the rodeo stock.

12pm - 4pm

Check out the Bands, Street Performers, Skateboard Demos, Lots of Vendors, Activities, Crafts and Much More!

SPOTLIGHT ON DOWNTOWN: The BIA Working for You Welcome to the 20th annual Williams Lake Street Party where for four action packed hours, rain or shine, the fun never ends. The event brought to you by the downtown property and business owners is the ultimate Customer Appreciation Day! Be sure and check out the local merchants and see the wide range of unique and quality items they have to offer. There will also be over 40 street vendors with a wide variety of eclectic wares. Sample the areas local and ethnic flavours served by food vendors strategically located throughout the event. There will be 5 stages of live entertainment, music, petting zoo, wagon rides, skateboarding demonstration and tips, face painting, bouncy castles and lots more for the younger set. In addition to the stages we will have clowns and magicians to make sure you stay smiling. Be sure and take in the Lakers' Car Club exhibition, and drop by the Potato House - the only registered Heritage House in the Downtown. So much to see and do and so little time. It is a day not to be missed This year the Downtown Williams Lake BIA is adding our support to the Canada Day Celebrations in Boitanio Park. This City sponsored event

full of fun and entertainment and where they will be handing out beautiful and tasty FREE cake runs from 2:00 – 4:00. The BIA will be hosting the entertainment and stage events from 10:00 – 2:00. A number of vendors from the Street Party are staying the weekend to take in the Stampede so they can set up in the Park again on the Monday. Lots of food and bling. Also in the park that day is the 4th Annual Nathan Mathews Memorial Skateboard competition. Don’t miss Canada Day in the Park July 1st in the Park. If you have the opportunity to join us in August be sure and take in the Downtown Art Walk Show and Sale. Local businesses invite you to Walk the Walk and check out the local artistic talent showcased in over 50 of our most hospitable merchants and don't miss Thursday's Special events. On top of getting to see the work of some incredible artists there, will be over 51 prizes to be won. This years the Downtown Williams Lake grand

prize is a weekend for two in SunPeaks. Every participating merchant will have their own door prize so be sure to enter at each location. As you walk don't miss the historic kiosks on each block. The old black and white photos bringing to life the history of the buildings that once stood there. Take the time to appreciate the colourful murals by artist Dwayne Davis and the detail in the statues by chainsaw carver Ken Sheen. The locations are provided on our website. www.downtownwilliamslake.com Also in August will be the second year for the Alley Art Mural Mentorship Project. The goals when designing this project were pretty broad. We wanted to add to the beauty of the downtown, replace tagging and graffiti in an attractive way that would reduce the likelihood of it being repeated, and encourage both vehicle and pedestrian traffic into less frequented parts of our downtown.. and: if that wasn't enough, we also wanted to provide a youth component. We accomplished all of these goals with the Alley Art Mural Mentorship project and by partnering with famed Mural Artist Dwayne Davis, we were able to provide an opportunity for youth employment

Laneway side of Deana's Studio at 8 Third Avenue South. that included a component to learn the art of mural painting under his guidance. For its efforts Downtown Williams Lake was recognised with two awards of excellence in the BIABC (and Alberta) Best in the West Awards. This years mural will be on the side of the Taylor Made Cakes and Sweets building just off of Oliver and across from Save On Foods. These murals are made possible with the support of the Williams Lake and District Credit Union, the Central Cariboo Arts and Culture Society, Davis Arts, and the members of the Downtown Williams Lake BIA so if you get the chance, and like the murals, please take the opportunity to thank them. This year the Downtown Williams Lake BIA will be working with Fortis BC to bring two Fresh Air Cinema productions to town. These movie nights are free to the public and will be held

in Boitanio Park on July 23rd and August 15th at dusk. Using an inflatable floating 50 foot movie screen, and a massive sound system, there will family night at the open air cinema under the stars. Williams Lake Central Business Improvement Area,

WLCBIA for short, is really just the legal description for the area better known as Downtown Williams Lake. The Businesses within this boundary formed the association and supported a self imposed tax levy that contributes to the funding among other things supports such events as the Street Party, Art Walk, and the Winter Light Up events. Since its inception the BIA has grown into a vibrant and social minded part of the community. Over the past several years the WLCBIA has played an integral part in many downtown projects using

its advisory role with the City to encourage them to place a greater emphasis in supporting the downtown though beautification projects and upgrading opportunities. The WLCBIA has been part of the process that saw the complete renovation of the Spirit Square and the total reconstruction of the retaining walls at that location, the replacement of the most of the downtown sidewalks with new and level concrete, the upgrades to the infrastructure and the repaving along Oliver Street. The WLCBIA is proudly working for downtown businesses.

Everyone's a winner at the KidSport Classic Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor The culmination of weeks and months of training paid off for many runners in the fourth annual KidSport Classic last weekend. Perfect weather conditions kicked off the run at 8 a.m. Sunday morning from Boitanio Park with 228 participants competing in either a 21-km half marathon, 10-km run

or relay. Recent Boston Marathon runner, Sheldon Manchur, logged the fastest time by completing the half marathon in a time of 1:18:12. “He's the fastest runner we've ever had in the KidSport Classic, there's no doubt,” says KidSport committee member, Denise Skarra. Even more impressive than the times

logged, was the fact that almost half of the participants, 96 in total, were school children. Skarra said 20 elementary school teams took part in the KidSport relay: 10 from Mountview elementary, two from Nesika, two from 150 Mile House, four from Cataline and two from Chilcotin Road. Overall Skarra said organizers were

Star match ups await fans at 87th Stampede Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor Besides hosting some of the world’s top cowboys, the Williams Lake Stampede also showcases some of the best animal athletes this side of the Rockies. Brothers Earl and Roy Call of C Plus Rodeos are longtime providers of Stampede rodeo stock and say this year has some dynamic match ups. “The draws are absolutely outstanding,” said Roy Call, pointing out a few to watch.

During the second rodeo performance Friday evening in bare back, J.R. Vezain of Cowley, WY, is paired up with The Graduate, who went to the Canadian Finals last year. “That’s probably worth the price of admission right there. J.R. could win a pile of points Friday night.” That same night, another good match up will be Kyle Bowers from Brooks, AB on a horse named Blue Jeans.

At Saturday’s rodeo, Call said rodeo fans will also want to watch for American cowboy Winn Ratliff on Bootlace. He noted another three or four pairings during the weekend performances where the rides in bare back “could be the highest marks in Canada for 2013.” “The best guys in the world are going to be here. The field of contestants is outstanding.” Not to be outdone by the horses, the C Plus Rodeo bulls are

some of the best and most feared in the business, and this Stampede promises to thrill the crowds. A few bulls to watch are ones like Disturbia, a seven-year-old jersey/ brama cross that has previously competed in the Canadian Finals in Edmonton. Disturbia will be flexing his muscle during the second and fifth performances. Wolverine is fiveyear-old black horned bull that nets top points for riders lucky enough

to draw him. Call said a great match-up to watch will be Wolverine and cowboy Cole Young of Fairview, AB, on Monday. Call said Triple Crown is a four-yearold up and coming bull who has been drawn by 150 Mile House’s Reid Louzier in Saturday’s performance. Reid’s brother Kyle is set to take a ride on Famous Amos also on Saturday. But perhaps the all time match-up of the season will be the dreaded Van Helsing with Merritt cowboy Ty Pozzobon Friday night. Call said Van Helsing hasn’t let a cowboy ride to the whistle in four years but that all may change. “There’s a good chance his streak is coming to an end this Friday,” Call said. “Ty’s pretty sticky. It’s an interesting match up. If Ty rides him it’ll kind of be a changing of the guard.” The Calls have raised Van Heising at their 150 Mile ranch.

The dreaded Van Helsing, seen here with Reid Louzier last year, is matched up with Merritt cowboy Ty Pozzobon Friday night. He’s tough to ride, and dangerous in the ring, delivering untold injuries on cowboys over his nine years. Call said this will likely be Van Heisling’s last year on the rodeo circuit before he’s retired. Call said raising bucking bulls are a long term investment, with no guarantees. “At the end of the day, there’s no replace-

ment for talent. If they don’t want to buck, they won’t.” For those wanting a closer look at the animals, the Calls host the Animal Athlete tours at the Stampede Grounds Sunday and Monday mornings at 9 a.m. Additionally, the brothers can be seen behind the chutes and in front of the bulls during each rodeo performance.

Horsefly Happenings By Dianna MacQueen

Come out for a Day or a WeekenD Stay! July is now upon us, how time flies. The children are all done school now and we have had lots of wonderful celebrations out here in June. Some of the Horsefly children graduated, some got married and we had many wonderful birthday celebrations as well! Lots of amazing things happening out here in July! To start with, Arts On The Fly Music Festival is July 12th and 13th, lots of great music this year. The Horsefly Fire Department will be having a fundraising ATV Rally on the 20th of July, entry fee is $45.00 and there are some great prizes to be won! For more info on this event contact Linda Bartsch at Horsefly Realty, or Ellie Seelhof at lou_ellie@xplornet. com or Louise Harry at 250-620-0556. Anvil Pub will be having another Open Mic night so call Crystal at 250-6203323 or check out her Facebook page. Horsefly’s Town Wide Yard Sale and Pie Sale is on the 21st of July, this is a fun event so come on out and check it out, you can pick up a map for locations at Clarke’s Store, soon! Camping season is now upon us so come out and stay at one of our many campsites and resorts, some of my favourites are Cariboo Country Inn on Horsefly Lake and another is Elysia Lake Resort on Quesnel Lake, and a little surprise for you, I have

heard that Elysia Lake Resort is having a musical event in August so I will find out the details and pass them along to you! On your way out to go camping, do not forget, to stop at Horsefly Service to get your Boat Gas and Propane and, if you are still needing a little more fuel for yourself get a slush puppie or some fresh pizza. Along your trek another great spot to stop is Horsefly Hardware, the owner is Dina Stephenson she was born and raised in Germany and came out to Canada in 1997, she found her love and they purchased a Guide Outfitting Territory out here in Horsefly, about a year later she purchased her home that she lives in now with her 14 year old son. In 2008 Dina decided to try out a new adventure and that was when she purchased the Hardware Store, this store I believe has been around for about 30 years or so. It may be a little store but, it is amazing! There is everything there from paint, nails, nuts and bolts, plumbing fixtures and supplies (even water pumps for wells), heating supplies, electrical supplies, key cutting, fishing gear, camping supplies, office and school supplies, gift cards, gifts, pet supplies, clothing. I do not think I could even come close on telling you what she has in there. I always tell people that the shop reminds me of the show the Friendly Giant

always adds a nice taste to a burger. Don’t forget to wear Red this Friday in honor of our Canadian Veterans. I am so grateful to live in the best country in the whole world. Let’s celebrate folks, we have lots to be thankful for in this marvelous country of Canada. Often we are very busy

during this long holiday weekend and hamburgers are easy to cook and always satisfy even the toughest of critics, even Terry Getz likes a good ole tasty hamburger. Make a Stampede burger for the long weekend If I were a betting person I would say there are more hamburgers eaten in Williams Lake during the Stampede week than any other time. If my assumption is correct, that means the ole barbecue will see quite a bit of action this weekend. Many of us have company in town for the Stampede and I suspect they would love a big, fat, juicy hamburger. Hamburgers are quick and easy to cook once you get the barbecue up to temperature. If you have a barbecue that uses coals or wood charcoal chunks, this

Leo, don’t be surprised if some changes regarding your career come your way this week. A raise, promotion or a new job may be on the horizon. Embrace these changes.

FAMOUS BIRTHDAYS

Libra, sheer luck that brings strange and wonderful things is in the big picture this week. The things that you have been wishing or dreaming of just may come true. Scorpio, a business or romantic partner brings good news your way. This news erases a funk that you have been in. The news may help you resume a goal you had abandoned. Sagittarius, don’t worry about an upcoming doctor’s visit. You may just get a clean bill of health from your doctor this week. This will definitely ease up some stress. You are full of creative energy, Capricorn, and must turn it into projects that may help you to earn some money in the near future. Get started while you are motivated.

Mix all together, and refrigerate for four hours. When you are back home from your stampede weekend events the burgers will be ready to cook. You can make these burgers prior to the

weekend and cook them any day of this fun holiday, Canada Day weekend. Enjoy the holiday and the Stampede folks! Bye for now and Goood Cooking!

Expect some news that sheds light on a difficult issue that you have been trying to resolve, Aquarius. You may feel so relieved that a celebration is in order. Exciting changes are coming, and they all center around you, Pisces. It may be embarrassing being the center of attention, but try to enjoy it.
