“We do this event each year because the decorating of gingerbread houses is such a fun family Christmas activity,” says Helena Holloway, one of the organizers. “Last year 125 gingerbread houses were decorated and it is always encouraging to notice how people get inspired by looking

at others creations. We have also noticed that it is an activity for all age groups from toddlers to eighty year-olds who want to express themselves creatively.”

annual Christmas Bird Count (CBC), held on Sunday, December 18th. This year, over 2,200 individual counts are scheduled to take place throughout the Americas and beyond from

December 14, 2011 to January 5, 2012.

the Bird Studies Canada Christmas Bird Count coordinator. “Bird Studies Canada and our partners at Audubon rely on data from the CBC database to inform a myriad of analyses regarding both bird conservation and climate change.”

During last year’s count, about 61 million birds were tallied in 2215 locations by over 62,000 volunteers, the number of both locations and observers a record level of participation.

In Canada, almost 12,000 participants in 394 counts found 3.3 million birds.

Around the lake with the RCMP

By RCMP Sgt. Richard Lebeuf December 2 CVSE had a vehicle stopped on Highway 97 N near Westcoast Road. CVSE had reason to believe the trailer and the skid steer being towed on the trailer were stolen.

RCMP attended but the driver had left prior to get a proper hitch for the trailer before realizing it was stolen.

The VIN was scratched off of the trailer. The last registered owner was contacted who confirmed it was stolen. RCMP located the truck and it’s occupants.

Both were arrested for Possession of Stolen Property.

RCMP responded to a report of a single vehicle collision where the driver was believed to be intoxicated and trying to flee the scene.

Officer located the female driver who was in fact intoxicated but there was not enough evidence to support an impaired driving charge. Driver was served a 24hr suspension, a violation ticket, vehicle impound documents and was lodged in cells until sober.

December 3 Dayshift RCMP responded to a domestic file complaint where it was alleged an adult female struck an adult male.

Female was not on scene. RCMP watch went to two addresses looking for the female but were not able to locate her. Investigation is still ongoing.

Theft of Santa.

Suspect(s) entered a local Williams Lake store and stole a nutcracker and a Santa.

This Santa was clad in a lumberjack shirt and holding a teddy bear. The female was described to be in her 50's with shoulder length brown hair, about 5'4" tall wearing a brown jacket over a white hoodie.

The complainant saw them leave in their blue 1995 Nissan Sentra.

RCMP confirmed this is not the Santa that we will be expecting on Christmas.

December 3 Nightshift

23:02 hours RCMP attended a residence on Slater Street to conduct a curfew check. Officers knocked on the door of the residence and received no answer at the door. A request for the breach of conditions was forwarded to Crown.

DecEMBER 4 Dayshift RCMP received a complaint of a domestic assault in progress.

Member attended and determined that a female had assaulted her common-law husband.

The female admitted to her actions was arrested and later released on PTA/UTA to appear in court at a later date.

Assist Ambulance.

Report of an injured snowmobiler at Yanks Peak (north of Likely).

Third party complaint via radio phone without accurate location.

Multiple agency search eventually located injured snowmobiler who sustained a broken leg and was eventually air lifted to Quesnel by Air Ambulance.

B&E 9th Ave N. Owner left for the afternoon and returned 3 hours later to find her daughter's XBox stolen.

Residence was unlocked and nothing disturbed.

No suspects or witnesses at this time.

C r i m i n a l Harassment/Robbery.

A female reported to the RCMP that her ex-boyfriend has been following her around recently and actually confronted her and her new boyfriend. A later meeting between these two resulted in the exboyfriend taking her cell phone then fleeing the scene. Ex-boyfriend was arrested and held awaiting court appearance.

Theft of Beer. 2 males were caught stealing beer from a Cold Beer and Wine Store.

Both intoxicated and lodged in cells pending release by PTA. DecEMBER 4 Nightshift At 0004hrs RCMP received a report that a male was at a residence on Carson Drive and had broken a window.

Male was highly intoxicated. It was learned that this male was supposed to be serving an intermittent sentence at the Williams Lake RCMP cells at the time of the event. He was arrested and is being held for court.

A female attended the hospital to report that her boyfriend of two months, had assaulted her by punching, kicking and pulling her hair. Male was arrested by the RCMP and is being held for court to deal with release conditions.

Injunction stops exploration work It’s back to the discussion table for the B.C. government and Tsilhqot’in First Nations (TNG) following a Supreme Court decision last week which stopped

exploratory work by Taseko Mines.

B.C. Supreme Court Justice ruled the province did not conduct meaningful consultation before issuing Taseko

two permits to conduct work at the proposed New Prosperity Mine site, on Xeni Gwet’in traditional lands.

The justice also ruled however that the TNG

must pay court costs for conducting unlawful road blocks.

“It’s a small victory, but we’ll take any victory we can get,” said Tribal Chief Joe Alphonse.

Zone 1 trustee William Van Osch was vote chairperson of the board while Zone 3 trustee Patricia Baker was named vice chair.

Van Osch said he expects the board will get right down to the work of creating a long term plan for the district, something the previous board was unable to decide upon.

Cycle of violence can be hard to break Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor In life we sometimes take the most basic things for granted.

But for women living in an abusive relationship, and who don’t feel secure in their own home on a day-to-day basis, they know all too well that being happy and safe isn’t always a reality for everyone.

In Williams Lake there is help for these women if they choose to reach out for it.

Williams Lake’s women shelter, the Chiwid Transitional House, is operated and funded by the Cariboo Friendship Society and offers a safe and private haven for women seeking shelter from an abusive relationship.

Janet is one of these women, she has been reaching out for help from the Chiwid Transitional House in town on and off for the last 15 years and she says she wouldn’t be alive

Chiwid House gives women hope Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor

The Chiwid Transitional House has been providing a safe environment for women in abusive relationships since 1993. The Chiwid House was opened because there is and still is domestic violence in our community. Prior to the Chiwid House, there was an emergency women’s shelter that was located at the Friendship Society with funding from the government the Chiwid House was possible.

The name for the Chiwid House comes from a book written by Sage Birchwater about a young first nations woman who is extremely abused by her husband. She chooses to run away and live in the bush for a long period of time instead of living with her husband.

Chiwid translates to Chickadee in English.

The Chiwid Transitional House is a 16-bed facility, and feeds, clothes, transports and does anything they can for the women that stay there. Women can choose to stay for as little as they like or up to a month. The house offers in-house counseling, outreach programs, safety planning, and numerous other services for the women. The house enforces a 10:30p.m. curfew for the women, has the women participate in household chores, and has other simple rules to give the women structure to their lives. The house also provides the ladies with information on various topics in the form of DVDs and videos and reading material, and the women are encouraged to write in journal. Once they are ready to leave Chiwid the women are provided with one big item for their new home if they are choosing not to go back to their partners, a food hamper if they wish, and offer to come back if they need. The door is always open at the Chiwid Transitional House and there is no judgment.

“The friendship in here grew, it’s not friendship anymore it’s family,” said Janet, who is currently accessing the service. “They are very caring people, they understand.”

Since 1996, when her children were just babies, Janet says an outburst of physical abuse and threats forced her out of her home to seek safety for her and her children.

The Chiwid house not only has offered her a safe place to stay until she was ready to go back, but she says has grown stronger each time she stayed.

“I feel strong enough to stand on my two feet,” said Janet. “I can let him know I won’t take it anymore.”

As is the case with a lot of abusive relationships, Janet said she kept getting lured back by not wanting to upset her children, but now that they are grown up she feels she has no reason to turn back.

“I use to be timid and scared – I felt I had to go back,” she said. “Today I am a little stronger.”

Janet said every time she went back in the past she had hope but she said not now.

“It’s been 15 years, and I am just tired if that kind of life style,” she said. “It hurts when your hopes just get shot down.”

Violence and Prevention Committee members Pat Rogers from the Chiwid House, Karen Hewitt from the Cariboo Friendship Society, Irene Willsie from the Women Contact Society, Harriet Hird from the RCMP Victim Services and Janice Breck from the CMHA Crisis and Counseling organised the lunch and presentations yesterday, which was National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

She said that she always went back home and wanted it to be better, but it never seemed to work out.

“I can come here and be safe, and no matter how many times I leave, the door is always open and I am welcomed back,” she said.

Janet said the Chiwid House has worked for her and has been a great help at bringing her selfesteem up.

“I feel like I can act like me – I don’t have to wear a mask or walk on egg shells,” said Janet. “(The house) has done me good.”

Janet said she wants to live a happy life and says when she walks out of the house her head will be held high.

“I m 43 years old, and I want to be happy – not looking over my shoulder,” she said. “I

probably won’t go back to (my) partner - I want real hope for myself.”

Janet said she has been in the house a little

over a week so far, and plans to stay the full month. She also said she is looking for a place of her own.

To dog park or not to dog park in the lakecity The ball is now rolling on a potential dog park in Williams Lake.

A group of dog lovers gathered in the Council Chambers on Monday night to start the preliminary talk about the where and the what of the possible dog park.

It was good to see such a passionate group of people show up for the meeting, as Geoff Paynton who lead the meeting said this project has no budget, and is not on council’s radar at all. It won’t go through unless some

passionate, determined people get involved.

As with any issue there are the pros and cons of it. It seems for now there is more overwhelming support for the idea since no showed up at the meeting to say otherwise, but those people must be out there.

Some locations that are on the long list of possibilities are Boitanio Park, Stampede Grounds, Kinsem Park, River Valley trailhead, and other small parks around the city.

This is Williams Lake after all, and it doesn’t take long to go a few minutes out of the City to find someplace for your dog to run around freely.

The residents who were at the meeting on Monday made it very clear that safety was very important to them, so maybe going out to the bush isn’t a good idea for them.

Some other items on the want list included fences, lights, benches, garbage cans, and trails.

The dog-loving group discussed more than was needed on Monday, as everyone is looking to the end product and had a hard time not getting carried away.

For now, the project has taken its first baby step of many, many steps. Council wanted the meeting held to gather information, and the people who showed up provided lots of ideas about where they would want a park, and about what they would like in it.

Yesterday marked 22 years since the Montreal Massacre at École Polytechnique where a crazed gunman took the life of 14 young women.

As the gunman began to open fire he screamed ‘I hate feminists.’

Since that tragedy, Dec. 6 has been commemorated as a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence

Against Women.

The events of the Montreal Massacre were extreme acts of violence against women, but everyday many women are subjected to violence in the form of physical, verbal and emotional abuse by loved ones, partners, friends and strangers.

There are various degrees of violence and

abuse but even small amounts should not be tolerated, for far too long women have suppressed their feeling, opinions and emotions.

We know many women keep their abuse a secret, hoping that it will be only a one-time offense but experience tells us sadly that it is often not the case.

In our day and age it

is important for women to stand together, support one another and tell the world that violence against women in any form, at any age will not be tolerated.

Yes, this is easier said than done, but there is help out there if you need it.

The first step to ask for help is often the hardest.

paralyzed when Kurt was around 14 or 15; his cousin was about ten years older. Kurt’s cousin was a quadriplegic, had arm motion but no hand. Kurt said his cousin loved life, and back then there was not a lot of accessibility.

This necessitated some help when he wanted to travel, which was a lot. Enter Kurt, big guy at that age went everywhere with his cousin, he was the muscle that got him up stairs and in tight places. As Kurt was telling me the stories about what he and his cousin did I listened intently, first because Kurt was sharing something personal and because they were really cool stories.

Kurt told me he looked up to his cousin, really idolized him, and that didn’t stop when he got hurt. I knew Kurt was being sincere, but what really drove it home for me was when

Kurt stopped talking, I looked up at him, this great big tough looking guy, and he had tears in his eyes, he couldn’t talk because he was crying, it brought a tear to my eye too. I got a little choked up and we kind of stopped talking about his cousin, he just said talking to me made him think of this cousin, someone he had not thought of for a long time.

You have to remember we are two grown men, in a gun store, how macho were we not. There were other people around. We quickly came back to our senses and sucked it up and started talking man talk again, like what was the biggest gun in the store etc…

When I was in Lake Havasu City Arizona my wife was kind enough to let me take off for a few hours to the gun stores.

At one of the stores I met a person named Kurt. Kurt was about 50 years old, a really big guy, tall and big, not fat. Kurt did not know a lot about guns and he was quick to admit it as he said it several times, I will try and help you, but I don’t know a lot about guns, and he really didn’t, but I don’t know much about them either, so it really does not matter. We chatted for some time and he asked me what I was doing in Havasu, I told him vacationing and racing in the Baja 1000.

Up here, desert racing is quite small, obviously, but down there Arizona is kind of the centre of it, at least that is what Kurt told me and it kind of makes sense. Kurt then told

me about a jeep club that goes out several times a week and he even invited me to go out riding with them and he would get me a seat. The club has about 80 jeeps and several hundred members.

They are very organized and have a trail rating system, 1 to 5. One is easy, 5, well let’s just say you better have a pretty tricked out jeep to make the trail. All of this was kind of interesting and then he told me about his cousin.

I intend on taking them

No grades in report cards

Parents and guardians of students in SD 27 will receive report cards without any grades due to teacher job action.

The Labour Relations Board made the ruling last week

after the government requested that teachers be mandated to write the reports.

Grade 12 students will receive their grades because it is deemed essential for those students, however all

other students will only be given a report card with their teacher's name and student's attendance record.

Phase One of teacher job action has been ongoing since the first day of school.

Wolves impact ranching business Dear Editor, I read Mr. Lay’s (story, Nov. 23 edition “C.O. Service predation control questioned�) about the unfairness of his permits being cancelled do to predation control.

B.C. Conservation Officer Service is jealous because they could not catch a cold let alone catch or shoot a bear, wolf or cougar preying on domestic livestock of any kind.

I know where that pack of wolves Mr. Lay destroyed was doing all the damage. I also know the ranchers whose livestock was being preyed upon.

The number of livestock lost was a devastating blow to their business indeed.

Mingling with the seniors an eye opener Being more than 70 years apart in age does not mean they can’t be buddies.

An older lady and a young boy, going back into Williams Lake Seniors Village after some fresh air.

This is not about a young boy and his grandma, it is about a buddy system used by the ‘2 Cool for School’ program.

A grade six and seven class from Cataline Elementary School in Williams Lake recently did one month of this year’s schooling at the Seniors Village.

and thought it would be a great program for Williams Lake. She approached her boss, Elaine Wright who thought it was a wonderful idea. Then it was off to the School District to run it by Superintendent Diane Wright.

So far everybody was on board and the

last hurdle was to go to Cataline School and a talk with Principal Mike Grace and teacher Steve Dickens. Both embraced the idea with open arms.

It took some work to get the classroom set up in the basement of the Seniors Village and to outline the program in conjunction with the seniors in the home.

Principal Mike Grace said, “ What an excellent learning experience, one they will remember for the rest of their life.

It was a little extra work but certainly well worth it... the students were respectful and polite... we are proud of kids... we will be back in May next year for a couple of weeks�.

Teacher Steve Dickens said the love that was extended to the students was something that will enrich their lives.

Mingling with the seniors was a real eye opener for some as they didn’t know old people could have so much fun’.

Each student had a senior buddy and they spent some time together over the four and a half week program. The seniors taught the young folks some games and the youngsters reciprocated, giving them time together and to have fun.

since they were with the seniors for one month...we learned to slow down a little... they thanked the seniors for not being crabby and we were lucky cause no other classes got to do this.

Janet Catalano, the main driver behind this wonderful program, she said there was so much satisfaction in the program and just seeing smiles on the face of residents was well worth it all...the seniors took part in many events because the kids were there...it was neat to see the energy brought to residents because of this ‘2 Cool for School’ program that features young students and older citizens in a Seniors Village.

Come out and support the Powder Kings this Thursday The Williams Lake Powder Kings have been around since 1993. We have trail agreements with the B.C Government for riding the Yanks Peak area and the Gold Rush Trail.

Club members have developed the Yanks Peak area over the years starting with the safety cabin that was built in

the late 1990’s. In 2006 the club purchased a groomer and drag and started grooming the trail system. In 2007 we built the parking lot and out house at the trailhead. And an on going project since the 90’s has been signing the different trails on the mountain. The Powder Kings, through fundraisers and help

from local businesses, funded all this expansion of the area. There is a fee for using the trail systems of $12 per day or $50 for the year for club members. It is important that these fees are paid to keep the trails up and running. It costs $150/ hr to run the groomer, and last year alone 160 hours were put into

grooming.

Another key part to keeping the trails up and running are volunteers, which we are in desperate need of. We currently have five volunteers and we need at least a dozen. The club needs help with various things such as trail grooming, up keeping the safety cabin, helping with fundraising,

and organising group rides. The club offers group rides for mountain and trail riders throughout the season.

Volunteers can help as much or as little as they want, but without volunteers the club will have to shut down for the winter.

The Club is having a short AGM Thursday Dec. 8 fol-

lowing an Avalanche Awareness Course that is being held at Pioneer Complex at 7 p.m. Those who use the Alpine Back Country are encouraged to attend, and for those that are interested in volunteering with the Powder Kings are encouraged to stick around for the meeting afterwards.

Muay Thai fighter ready to mix it up Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Four years ago, Llyod Kenny was just starting out with intro classes for men at Kix 4 Chix, now he is fighting fights in front of thousands of spectators down in the Lower Mainland.

And now after countless hours of training, Kenny has now worked his way to fighting in a title match coming up this March.

His latest win came in Surrey at the end of October when he fought in a North American SemiPro Kickboxing challenge between Canadian and U.S. competitors.

Kenny was victorious in his match, winning by knock out just over a minute into the first round.

“He took a knee and didn’t want to fight anymore,” said Kenny. “He wanted a rematch and it was 40 seconds and then I kneed him in the ribs, broke his rib and that was the end.”

A hockey player all his life, Kenny never found it interesting to watch on T.V, what he did find interesting was martial arts and mixed martial arts, in particular Muay Thai style fighting.

“Muay Thai is knees, elbows, punches, and kicks,” said Kenny “No ground game – kickboxing with elbows.”

But he is quick to add that in amateur fighting there are no elbows because they cut too much.

Kenny said after his few intro classes at Kix 4 Chix, he moved to Shogun when they came to town where he got his feet wet in mixed martial arts but it wasn’t competitive since they are family orientated.

“Then I met Paul Rosbrough, who use to fight– he cherry picked four of us from Shogun who really wanted to fight,’ said Kenney “He took us and started his own club in

Williams Lake.”

Kenny has now been training at Williams Lake Muay Thai with Rosbrough for a year and half and had his first fight under his belt in early spring. All together Kenny has fought five fights, winning all but one.

“He’s my coach, he’s my buddy.

He takes time out of his day to train me,” said Kenny of Rosbrough, who trains with Kenny every day.

Kenny said he goes straight to kick boxing after he gets off work at Cariboo Ski, and then heads off to the Concrete fitness to work out.

Most days he trains for four hours on top working full-time and taking a full course load at TRU. “I like the constant action Muay Thai gives me,” said Kenny “In Muay Thai you basically have to fight the guy.”

Kenny said his parents are very supportive of his fighting; adding his dad even comes down from the Yukon where he is working to watch his fights.

Up next for Kenny is his title fight in March, and after his quick knock out win at the end of October against David Correa, Kenny is hoping for another win.

He says he plans to train hard for the fight, but he understands what it means to lose.

“It just breaks my heart to know that I could have done better, that I could have done better,” said Kenny.

“Basically I am going to just train my hardest.”

We wish you a Berry Christmas Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Every Christmas there is always a family in town who really out does themselves with lights and decorations at their homes for the holidays.

One house in town that is a must see for everyone is located at 142 Country Hills Blvd.

It is not only spectacularly decorated, but the homeowner Ken Berry and his family collect donations for the 139 Children Fundraising Society.

Berry says they have been decorating the house for the last 25 years, ever since they moved in, but it was in 1999 when they first thought of using the house as a fundraiser. “‘I wonder if we put a sign out if we would get donations’ was the thought, we figured maybe a $100, but that year we collect $780,” says Berry.

Berry says in the last 11 years they have collected and donated $14,100 and he would like to reach $20,000

before he’s done.

And if you haven’t seen the Berry family’s handy work when it comes to decorating their house and yard you are missing out on quite the sight.

Berry says his parents were really into Christmas when he was growing up, and he says they did things right and passed it along to him and now he’s passing it along to his children and grandchildren.

“My dad was really into Christmas lights, he would come home from Army and Navy with a new string of lights he was so proud of and I brought right into it,” says Berry.

Berry says his whole display started with a couple of reindeer he and his son made when his son was just 10 years-old, and grew to include Northern lights, a penguin train, a penguin skating rink and thousands of lights strung all around the yard and house.

Many ways to cook your Christmas gobbler There are as many ways to cook turkeys as there are turkeys.

If I find a nice, different way to cook a turkey, chances are that I will try to expand my culinary expertise in the world of gobbler cooking!

So, over the years I have tried many different turkey recipes for these very special occasions.

With some of the forays into cooking the big bird I found a couple of tricks like I like to use no matter whether I’m cooking for Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Brine the bird at least 12 hours in advance, this helps keep the turkey

moist when cooking.

Simple stick the turkey in a big plastic bag with water and a little sea salt, let it sit overnight.

Next morning wash off bird and pat dry. Here’s the secret ingredient to cooking a nice turkey.

The Secret Ingredients Butter, Maple Syrup, Fresh Thyme and

Oregano 2 cups of apple cider 1/3 cup pure maple syrup 2 tbsp chopped fine, fresh thyme, or 2 tsp dried 2 tbsp chopped fine, fresh oregano or 2 tsp dried (could use fresh or dried tarragon as well) 1½ tsp freshly grated lemon peel 3/4 cup of butter , softened to about room temperature Boil maple syrup and apple cider in a large saucepan over medium, until reduced to ½ cup... this will take about 20 minutes. Remove from

heat and put in thyme and oregano, along with the lemon peel. Whisk in butter until melted.

Season with sea salt and freshly cracked pepper.

Stir.

Put in bowl and then into fridge for about an hour. You should be able to mould the ingredients together to form a log shape if you gently roll on wax paper.

You could be blind to the defects of those you love.

When ready to cook turkey, cut off pieces of the butter/maple syrup and put underneath the breast skin, also inside the thigh… just make a small slit with a sharp knife, then insert some of the great taste. The butter inside the skin will help keep it moist with some slow cookin’ throughout the day of the feast Keep the butter, maple syrup log handy because it will work well with gravy… next week.
