Voting gets underway for the 2011 Municipal Election Anyone wishing to cast their ballets in the municipal election can do so today.

City Hall foyer Nov. 16 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

General voting day for city residents will be this Saturday, Nov. 19 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Marie

Sharpe Elementary School gymnasium.

Residents will be casting their votes for mayor and six councillors as well as the Zone 6 School Board

trustee position.

Voters will also be asked whether they want the city to continue to add fluoride to the city’s drinking water.

Eligible voters must be 18 years of age and older and bring identification with them, indicating their home address and signature.

Mayors wrangle for First Nations support Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor An announcement last week from a respected Tsilhqot’in leader backing Scott Nelson’s bid for mayor forced the hand of the entire Tsilhqot’in National Government, who publically endorse Nelson’s rival Kerry Cook yesterday.

“She’s the prettiest of the bunch,” joked Chief Joe Alphonse, in response to the TNG’s unusual move of endorsing Cook despite being against her position on Taseko’s Prosperity Mine.

Kidding aside Alphonse said the Nation issued a press release yesterday to state

their appreciation for Cook’s work at Punky Lake and collaborative effort to reduce crime during her last term.

“We feel, at the end of the day, we can get the most honest, trustworthy answers from Kerry (Cook). We don’t agree with her on everything but she brings respect to the table."

Last week Ervin Charleyboy publicly endorsed Scott Nelson for mayor and revealed his position that he also supports Taskeo’s New Prosperity mine project at Fish Lake.

“I have been thinking about this for a long time. There is nothing to offer our youth. The

young people want employment, they want training. They want a future to look forward to. I am looking at the future for our people,” Charleyboy said.

Charleyboy said he has known Nelson a long time as a straight shooter who doesn’t beat around the bush.

“If he wants something done, he does it.

It is no good if you talk too much about it.”

Mayoralty race aside, the public remarks on New Prosperity is the first sign of any division in the Tsilhqot’in First Nations’ otherwise united plight to stop the mine.

concerns are addressed, he feels the mine could greatly improve the quality of life of First Nations communities out west, though he does acknowledge all current chiefs do oppose the mine.

Alphonse said the communities have more going for them now than they have in years and they are working toward more sustainable, environmentally friendly business in their communities.

Alphonse said Charleyboy is a respected man in their community and he was saddened to hear his opinions aired publicly.

Candidates search for solutions for out-of-work mill employees Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor Mayoral candidates announced earlier this week their plans for the Creekside division of Tolko, and just like other hot topics in this election all three have different approaches to the problem.

Incumbent Mayor, Kerry Cook, feels it is important not to promise more than she can deliver to the effected employees at TolkoCreekside.

“We regularly meet and discuss with industry to see what we can do to help that is in our control,” said Cook. “I am not someone who is going to make promises, there are a lot of things that are out of our control.”

Mayor candidate Walt Cobb thinks no matter what the solution, he just wants closure for the employees who have been left waiting around in the last two years, and also wants to start with a meeting of key players to see if there is anything the City can do.

“If there is anything the City could do to help find a solution, lets look for it,” said Cobb. “Further to that, I do not believe it is fair to any of the employ-

ees at any level to be left in limbo as to their future.”

We have had over $47 million in development since 2009. As we implement our economic development strategy, I expect this growth to continue. I believe Williams Lake has been remarkably resilient in the midst of the downturn of the global economy.

We will have prepared for the coming increase in employment and will be prosperous. We will have continued to address the root causes of crime.

SCOTT NELSON: How very quiet the local economy is and how worried they are about their jobs. We will provide a positive investment climate, partnerships and a zero per cent tax rollback for three years. We will work with the tourism, forestry, mining and agriculture industries to strengthen local opportunities.

Jobs will be the priority for the next three years.

SCOTT NELSON: A positive energized pro-growth city that has more jobs, more shopping, more opportunities, a diversified niche of small and large businesses, the success of more mines opening and stability put back into the lumber industry. Crime will be reduced in Boitanio Park and more subsidized senior housing built in Williams Lake.

WALT COBB: Actually there have been two underlying complaints. The number one concern as my platform states, the apparent disregard for the taxpayer and their needs while putting us in debt with little or no visible improvements.

Lakecity council candidates talk platforms does say the City has made progress.

“There is still room for improvement,” said Bonnell. “We need to find ways to work corporately with the community to resolve social issues and the sense of insecurity.”

Ivan Bonnell As a long-time resident of the community, Ivan Bonnell is concerned about a number of issues in the community including taxation and economic status, and has decided to run for a city councilor seat in the upcoming municipal election.

“I am willing to serve as a collective with the whole of council,” said Bonnell.

Some things he would like to work towards on council would to be continuing towards lowering crime, strengthening the economy, and he believes the community and council need to work together.

“There is strength in the community, we need to unite and work towards common goals,” said Bonnell.

Bonnell said as an outsider looking in there are still problems facing the community, mainly making the community at large feel safe which he doesn’t feel has happened yet, though he

Jacobson said with his business experience he will be a great addition for the council team, and he wants to work with existing businesses, as well as working to attract new ones.

A full slate in store for Cariboo-Chilcotin Election Day Well, we’ve rounded the corner and are headed for home -- it is Election Day this Saturday.

For the most part everyone has run clean and informative campaigns.

Of course all elections are important ones, however this term will be particularly crucial for our new School Board trustees and the educational future they will set in place for our children for years to come.

The board will be running School District 27 on almost a million bucks less than last year, and that’s just the start. Cuts are anticipated in the years to come due to declining enrollment and there are empty seats in schools to either fill or close in rural areas.

There is also the possibility of creating a middle school in Williams Lake and, one would hope, a renewed push for a new building for Marie Sharpe Elementary downtown.

The last board was unable to reach many decisions on many issues the last three

years, highlighting the importance of electing the right people to work together.

Williams Lake has only two positions they can vote on for School District trustees and you must vote for the trustee in the area in which you live.

Zone 5, Williams Lake Fringe area, has three candidates in the running; Sheila Boehm, Oleh Lazarchuk and Jim Ritchie.

For the city seat, Zone 6, there are two men in the running; Dr. Doug Neufeld and Rob Zacharias. The trustee election for this seat is being run by the City.

In an interesting twist, Zone 7 (Chilcotin) candidate Joyce Cooper has recently been declared by acclamation. Her rival Richard Elliot, who was the previous trustee, withdrew from the election.

The city councillor race has seen many candidates, 14 in total, step up for the six jobs available. There are many new faces in the mix as well as experienced politicians vying for the seats.

In another interesting twist in this race it has been the suggestion in many circles that some councillor candidates and a mayoral candidate is running a slate.

According to Wikipedia, a slate is a group of candidates who run in multi-seat or multi-position elections on a common platform.

“For members of a slate, this usually means not running against each other for the same office, purchasing advertising materials together and possibly agreeing to vote together on some issues if elected,” states Wikipedia.

I suppose a slate could be a good or a bad thing, depending on which side of the fence you are on.

On the up side, a slate would be a powerful group to effect change.

On the down side, a slate would be a powerful group to effect change.

At Monday night's councillor AllCandidates forum and all 14 candidates denied any ties to a

slate and said they were all running as independants.

In the mayoral race we have three candidates running for the top job, all long time residents with previous on-the-job experience.

Scott Nelson is running on the platform of positive change, change and more positive change.

Kerry Cook speaks of a balanced approach, with an urging to stay the course.

Meanwhile Walt Cobb blames both previous mayors for putting the city in debt and promises to get the City’s finances in order.

All three candidates have campaigned regarding their support for Taseko’s New Prosperity mine.

But if all it took was the support of Williams Lake's mayor and council, Taskeo's mine would have been in long ago.

Gotta love politics though for trying.

Sandy beaches and fans greet racers in Mexico I am writing this from not so sunny Ensenada.

When you think of Mexico I would assume most people think of sunny blue skies and warm weather. The sky is very cloudy and we are expecting some significant rain. Rain will change everything in the race, likely make it a little tougher. The weather during the day is not bad, but it gets cool at night and the other racers we have been talking to tell us it is brutally cold at night in the mountains, they tell me cold like you can’t imagine, it gets down in the 30’s (Fahrenheit, 32 degrees equals 0

We have been talking to several other racers and they have all been very good at giving us advice. Advice is great, but you really have to do some things for yourself. Heino and I are going to prerun a fifty mile section of the course to get a feel for what we

are going to be facing.

Three of the guys on our team went for a 125 mile ride on their dirt bikes and one of the guys said it was the best ride of his life.

The terrain is apparently extreme.

The riders met up with a vehicle in our class, they are averaging 16 mph. You need to do 23 mph to finish on time. The vehicle was driven by a couple of young guys that were lost, with a GPS unit. Can you imagine taking on a race and getting lost with a GPS? Oh wait, we may be in the same situation.

I was talking to one of the fellows that is

racing a class 4 buggy and asked him about a couple of the sections of the course.

I asked him how the San Felipe loop is and he said, “Horrible.”

Upon further discussion he let me know that he has raced the San Felipe twice and not finished. He will not run that section in this race. He says there is a rocky section that is brutal and that there are woops that are four or five feet deep for miles.

I spent a day with Ricky-Bobby working on suspension and wheel alignment. We took the unit out to test the suspension and are happy with

it. Again, as you learn more about this race, like many things you asked yourself if you should have done something different. Since we been down here, for the two days we have said several times already we should have done this, we should have done that.

Although we have only been here for two days we have managed to have some fun, a fire on the beach sitting around talking about the race, the big unknown.

The other racers we have talked to have all been very good about sharing information with us, we are told it is

because the race is so tough you have to help each other out. They put us on their buddy list, which means they will help us out if they can.

My father-in-law Keith Dufresne, along with Ricky-Bobby, has put together a list of pit stops, driver changes, and locations of the chase trucks for us. We need a plan, some organization for this whole program. I have asked Keith to document what actually happens in the race versus what we have planned.

We are going through certification and tech inspection on Thursday. The tech

inspection is apparently a huge production with literally a 100,000 people lining the streets. How big is Baja down here, big.

Kids, adults, police, military personnel all wave when you are riding by with smiles on their faces. Little kids run up to you and ask for stickers and even autographs from our dirt bike riders, wow.

We ride the RZR down the streets, highways, same with the bikes, wherever you want to ride you can when Baja is going on.

Hoping for a high turn out at the polls Well, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re just a few days away from the Municipal Election in Williams Lake and it certainly has been interesting, at least in the Mayoralty Race.

It is a little unusual in the lakecity to have three individuals, who know what it is like to sit in the Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chair, looking to once again be the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Top Gunâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; for our community. Walt Cobb, Kerry Cook and Scott Nelson have been going full tilt for over six weeks now to make sure we get their message loud and clear. .

We have been hearing Mrs. Cook and Mr. Nelson, fiscally sparring in the court of public opinion, trying to convince the voters that it was not them, that caused our fiscal situation to need some

Ten Thousand Villages offers something for everyone Courtney Taylor Cariboo Advisor For the last 25 years, Williams Lake shoppers have been able to help artists make a fair living while at the same

The event first started as two tables in Boitanio Mall, but has now grown too large and

sets up shop in the banquet hall at the Cariboo Bethel Church.

“Every year there are different products, as new artisans are discovered,” says Adina Neufeld, the organizer of the Ten Thousand Villages festival here in town.

According to Neufeld, there are many beautiful items made from recycled materials, wood, onyx, clay, textiles and other materials.

“All the items are made individually, and are all unique,’ she says.

The mandate of the Ten Thousand Villages organization is to help people who are in poverty, and give them a fair trade market to make a fair income.

“You name it and we probably have it,” says Neufeld. “We have some pretty incredible sculptures this year made out of recycled oil barrel lids.’

City candidates ready to face off for Zone 6 trustee Angie Mindus Cariboo Advisor It is obvious the two men running for school board trustee, Zone 6 City of Williams Lake, both want the best education possible for the city’s children, they just have very different opinions on how to achieve that outcome.

Dr. Doug Neufeld is a newcomer to the political scene but no stranger to the needs of children, having as he calls it “48 years in the district” if he were to combine his four children’s local educational years. Two of his children are at UBC and two are still in Williams Lake schools.

“My colleagues think I should be locked up,” Neufeld laughs of reaction to his initial candidacy announcement.

“But they’re very supportive.”

Neufeld, who has run a family physician practice for the past 21 years and now also a laser aesthetics business while his wife is a teacher, says he had been thinking of run-

ning for trustee for some time, noting that the more he learned about the issues facing the district he felt he had no choice but to run.

“It is a formative time in our city’s future. There are many changes coming and I want to be apart of the planning to ensure our children have the best possible educational outcome.”

Neufeld said the key to keeping the educational standards high is to support teachers.

“By them doing their best, our children do their best,” he said.

Neufeld supports instituting teacher assessments conducted in a positive manner to help achieve teacher excellence. He also supports the board coming up with a 10-year plan, however he’d like to lobby the ministry for a one to two year grace period on any budget cuts due to the vey real possibility that Williams Lake will see a large influx of students if local mine

“Every student should have the best education possible, and no one student should be left behind,” said Lazarchuk.

Lazarchuk said he is very passionate about the kids, and has the time to devote to being a trustee.

“I have five grandchildren currently in the school district,” said Lazarchuk.

His top three issues in both the community and School District 27 are financial balance between rural students needs with city students, recognizing the importance of rural schools, and thirdly he feels the school district needs to listen to what the parents have to say through DPAC, and other PAC groups.

“We also need to make our rural schools viable, and make the rural communities a place for kids and families so maybe in turn

projects go forward.

He’d like to plan once that is determined.

“I think it’s a really exciting time in our community,” he said.

School reconfiguration isn’t something Neufeld is dead set against, however he says he would like to ensure longterm educational benefits and a longterm plan before agreeing to changes.

“We want to plan things in a reasonable fashion. It would be a shame to change things only to have them change again in a few years down the road,” Neufeld said.

“You don’t want to make short term decisions. That creates a lot of anxiety for everyone.”

Neufeld says he also brings to the table his ability to run efficient meetings thanks to his time serving Williams Lake Minor Hockey and the hospital as Chief of Staff and says he works well in a group setting.

For candidate Rob Zacharias holding a school trustee position wouldn’t be new (he served on the board from 2005-2008) and he says he knows exactly what he wants and

Lazarchuck has a business background, says he understands budgets, and works well in a team with others.

“I want to do whatever is best for the students, its all about the kids,’ said Lazarchuk.

“I want to maximize educational opportunities for all students by possible reconfiguration,” said Zacharias, a father of three, the community coroner and who also runs a private adjusting business.

Zacharias is also supporting smaller class sizes for a better teaching and learning environment and holds previous board members responsible for a lack of decisionmaking and lack of transparency in the past three years.

Zacharias is also in favour of a 10-year plan, however he’d ask for that plan to come from the School District staff leaders rather than board members.

“I would trust the leadership to have our children’s best interests at heart.”

Zacharias said he would fight to change the board’s structure to that of representation by population and hold trustees accountable for missed meetings.

And, he says he also knows clearly what he is not in favour of.

“I’m against families not having a say in their children’s education. I’m against withholding information from the public and I’m against Grade 8 and 9 students losing a total of 20 educational days because of provincial exams.”

Zacharias lists his previous experience on the board and his position as Columneetza PAC president as assets he would be bringing to the position of trustee.

Anyone 18 years

of age and older and who resides within the municipal boundaries are eligible to vote in the Zone 6 school district trustee election.

The children living in those areas use attend Marie Sharpe, Nesika and Cataline .

No child should be left behind! Our children and grand children need to be educated in a positive environment that gives them all the tools and skills necessary to compete in the global work place and do exceptionally well in our post secondary/trades institutions. We need work experience for secondary students, and more before/after school programs. I have a business background, understand budgets, and have the desire, time, and commitment to help make this happen.

The top 3 issues:

1. Financial: The ongoing challenge of meeting the needs of all our students in our rural and municipal communities with the allocated provincial funding available.

2. Recognizing the importance of the rural schools and the fact that they are the hearts of their communities and balancing their needs with that of urban schools.

3. To assess and create programs directly addressing the unique needs of students by taking into account socio-economic and cultural back grounds as well as recognizing the diverse needs of developmentally challenged, exceptional, distance, and home school students.

This may include enhancing English as a Second Language program and/or promoting a greater understanding of cultural diversities. Of equal importance is to increase aid to those working to meet the needs of the, developmentally challenged student population. I truly believe that by working together (teachers, parents, community leaders, school board trustees, and all governments) we can nd a way to implement programs that ensure each child can reach their individual optimum performance.

The market has evolved from what was know as the Cariboo Handmade Market that was held in the Elks Hall and W.L. School to the Medieval Market we know and love today, which has been held in the Columneetza Gym

for the past 15 years.

“We like to look at everything that is being sold,” said Christie Mayall, co- organizer of the Market.

“Everything is highquality and handmade by the vendors.”

One of the vendors who Mayall says lots of people are excited about is fomer Cariboo legendary potter Corry Lunn. Mayall said there is always a line-up to get to her booth.

“We’re really excited about her coming back this year,” says Mayall

One of the new local vendors this year will be Lynn and Kathy Bonner from Riske Creek.

Lynn will be selling blacksmith items, along with some jewelry and says he really excited about being apart of the Market this year.

“We’re not too sure what to expect, but it should be kind of fun,” says Lynn.

He says he has been making simple blacksmith objects, and stainless steal jewelry and a bit of silver jewelry for about six years, and he

Snowfall signals start of snowmobiling season Snowmobiling is a great past time to share with not only friends, but with the whole family as well.

If you are unsure about where to go in the area, or are new to snowmobiling all together, there is the Williams Lake Powder Kings- the local snowmobiling club.

Rick Jelley is the president of the club, and says the club is a great way for people to get familiarized with the area, as well as get out with some experienced riders.

Monday night saw the last dress rehearsal for the seven actors who make up the cast of the Studio Theatre's production of 'The Office", The show starts tonight at 8 p.m. sharp and tickets are available at About Face Photography.

New actors, actresses, backstage crew, and directors come together to put on the Studio Theatre’s next production, The Office, with the opening show tonight at 8 p.m. sharp.

Directors, Mary-Jo Hilyer, and Michael

Hodgson, have put together what they call a great mix of new talent and experience in the cast of their production of Canadian playwright, Neil Foster’s play The Office.

“The play is six plays within one,” says

Hilyer. “It’s a comedy, and the characters intertwine through out the play with a surprise at the end.”

The cast has been rehearsing since the middle of September, and both Hilyer and Hodgson feel that all of the cast members

have great chemistry on stage.

“We had a lot of great talent show up for auditions, but we think we chose the best people,” says Hodgson.

“We have a great mixture of new faces and experienced actors.”

Some warm comfort food for winter time It was not a great year to be a Saskatchewan Roughriders football fan. I am just one of thousands across Canada who faithfully cheer for the Green Team each year and no matter whether they win or lose we stand behind the Riders, cause we have Rider Pride. As I grow a little older I start thinking about how nice it would be to enjoy some warm sunshine and higher temperatures this time of the year. Guess I’ll have to travel out of the

country to find those conditions.

Seeing as how traveling to a warm climate is out of the question right now, I guess I will have to settle for some warm, comfort kind of food.

Something that is fitting for this time of the year.

Growing up in the cold winters of Saskatchewan, stews of

all kinds became regular fare in the chill that seemed to permeate the flatlands from November through to the end of March each year. This is a recipe I remember from my grandmother although I have tinkered around with it over the years. I’m sure you’ll like this healthy wintertime dish.

Election Day Stew 1 pound of lean beef cut into small cubes 2 Tbsp seasoned flour 2 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups of mushrooms, your choice 4 cloves of garlic chopped finely 2 medium onions chopped

3 tsp tomato paste 2 cups of beef broth 2 potatoes cut into pieces 2 parsnips peeled and cut up 3 cups of carrots ½ cup chopped parsley 1 cup chopped fresh green beans 1 tbsp cornstarch and some cold water to mix Coat beef with flour then heat oil in a large pot and then throw in the beef. Cook until meat is browned. Take beef out of stock pot then add onions and mushrooms and cook for about five minutes or so. Add garlic and mix it around in the pan for a couple of minutes.

Stir in tomato paste and broth, also put the beef back into the pot. Bring pot to a boil then simmer for an hour-and-ahalf until beef is tender.

Put green beans into pot along with potatoes, parsley, carrots and simmer for another ten to twenty minutes. Some Rosemary or Thyme would also add to the taste of this Stew. Mix cornstarch with cold water and put into the mixture then add in the parsley. Now you’re ready to serve.

Comfort food for a cold Cariboo Day. Make sure you get out to vote in the Municipal Election on Saturday.
