As the name suggests, our “Eat with Choice” program is just that. Our clients get to choose what they want to cook and we support them to achieve that. Cooking and food preparation has been a key part of our program for many years and we are continually looking at ways to improve how we meet the individual needs of the clients. “We introduced the ‘Eat With Choice’ program about six weeks ago,” said Tania Anderson, Day Services Manager. “Many of our clients have a goal of learning to cook but we felt this needed to be expanded to include planning and preparation.” “This program plays a big part in our overall Life Skills curriculum. This has led to a number of our clients doing meal prep in the kitchen at Meals on Wheels.” Our clients are encouraged to research recipes, plan a meal, shop for ingredients, cook as well as clean-up. Budget plays another important aspect of the planning stage. With the majority of our clients living on a disability support pension, shopping and cooking to a budget is crucial. The good thing about our “Eat With Choice” program is that clients get to take their cooking home to share with family or friends. “I love cooking, especially when I get to take it home to share with my family and show what I’ve done,” said Tarrah.
