Welcome, ya’ll! You’ve chosen a great year to attend the Wild West Festival – 2014 marks the event’s 30th anniversary. You can expect the usual crowd pleasers as well as a few surprises. Look for the popular gathering of gunfighters and their thrilling – and very loud – face off. Watch for the famed Wheelie-ing Elvi – fake Elvis Presley wannabes – as they zip along in the parade. Children have a ball at the WWF; they have a slew of play options. And expect the usual exceptional array of arts, crafts, and food. Check out three new amusements this year: 1. A beard contest; 2. Photo ops with a real Texas longhorn; 3. Live music and entertainment from Buffalo Bill’s Cowboy Band. You’ll see a traditional Texas small town with a strong business district, super schools – Springtown is the only school in the Lone Star State with a Porcupine as a mascot – and friendly faces everywhere. So, take this guide along to get a feel of the expansive Square and grounds where new delights await everywhere. Inside you’ll also find maps and lists of performers and activities. So, welcome to Springtown and the Wild West Festival ya’ll!

Ward Welding and Supply is that... and a whole lot more Springtown’s oldest business offers medical gases, rentals Springtown’s oldest, continuously-operating business sits on the northeast corner of the square – a pretty good vantage point from which to view the Springtown Area Chamber of Commerce’s Wild West Festival Saturday, Sept. 20. That business is Ward Welding and Supply, located at 200 East 1st Street, and it’s a sponsor of Wild West this year. The Ward family established Ward Welding in 1936 as a blacksmith and service shop for local farmers and ranchers. Welding supplies and industrial gases were added eventually, as well. Then, in 1995, Dale Shaw and his son Quinn purchased Ward Welding and Supply, expanding the focus of the business from welding to selling welding supplies and industrial gases to the community. The company offers a full-line of products and is a distributor for most major welding and industrial product lines, including Victor, Lincoln, Miller Tweco, Norton, Sait and Pearl.

Jerry Durant Auto Group: Much more than just vehicles In 1970, Jerry Durant chose a simple phrase for his new car dealership: “Come out our way and trade your way” Today, “come out our way and trade your way” can be done online as well. The Jerry Durant Auto Group online presence is extensive. With dealerships in Weatherford and Granbury, a wide variety of makes and models is available – and you can see those myriad offerings online, too. At jerrystexas.com, visitors can view the entire new and preowned car inventories offered by the Jerry Durant Auto Group. That includes the latest models from Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, Toyota, Buick, Scion, and Hyundai. Front and center at jerrystexas. com is a selection of specials, new and used. Also at the website, visitors can schedule maintenance and contact the Durant Collision Center. If you need help navigating around the detailed site, immediately upon logging on, an opera-
tor pops up via a chat box to help you find what you need quickly. Other online options include finance information, a tab to help you determine the value of your trade-in, and even a place to get information on a career with Jerry's Auto Group. There's also a link with information on Jerry's GM Fleet options. Of course, the dealerships are hands-on in communities in many ways – including their sponsorship of the Gunfighter Show at this year's Wild West Festival. You can stop by Jerry's stretch of showrooms in the 3000 block of Fort Worth Highway in Weatherford or the one in Granbury at 5100 Highway 377 East. The Jerry Durant Auto Group has a bevy of ways to get you into a new vehicle. Call them at 817-596-8088, stop by a showroom, or surf over to the web site. However you reach them, rest assured that they will live by their motto: “Come out our way and trade your way.”

Taco Casa: All about family and Springtown by mark k. campbell For family owned Taco Casa, being in Springtown revolves around family and community. Owner Tom Loughrey said, “We think of our customers as a big family. We have so many who have been so loyal from day one.” The Springtown Taco Casa has been here 13 years – Loughrey has owned it for 12 of those – and workers have seen customers grow up then watched their kids grow up. Loughrey said getting involved in the community is essential for the restaurant. “Our focus is to support the community,” he said. “We’re strong in the schools, churches, and there are a lot of non-profits we help.” That’s why you’ll see Taco Casa involved in the Wild West Festival – they think of the community as family. Historically, the Taco Casa chain is 43 years old and Loughrey said Springtown and every other Taco Casa welcomes each new store “like another family member.” And they certainly have lots of “family members” here in
Springtown, too. For years, locals of all ages have poured into the restaurant at 101 Highway 199 West, Suite A – at the intersection of the Jacksboro Highway and Main Street. Springtown folks know that their Taco Casa lives by the company motto of “Real Fresh... Real Food...Real Good...” They are present throughout the town. E v e r y visitor to Porcupine Stadium sees the company’s brilliant sign displayed. And many a sportswriter and stadium worker has enjoyed food delivered to the press box on fall Friday nights. Choosing a favorite at Taco Casa is not easy. Aside from the generous filling in every regular taco – crunchy or soft – there’s a “Super Taco” as well as a “Taco Lite.” Not to mention huge burritos, a salad, tostadas, nachos and chiladas. Especially popular are the famous chiliburgers and the gotta-have-it, fresh brewed tea. If you’re looking for a family, look no further than Taco Casa.

Together in Christ Springtown area churches unite to support the community By Natalie Gentry Local Churches from the Springtown area are thrilled to have the opportunity to support the city and its largest event. They have come together to sponsor the Wild West Festival as the Fellowship of Christian Churches. The Churches of this town thoroughly enjoy serving the community and felt that being involved in the event would make a statement about their unity in the body of Christ. While there has always been camaraderie and cooperation between the churches, the decision to sponsor the festival was inspired by the sudden passing of
Pastor John Conway of Hilltop Family Church. “Brother John” was passionate about unifying the local churches and allowing the community to plainly see that while there may be miniscule differences between the churches they are all united in Christ. When Pastor Doug Harris, of Agnes Baptist Church, heard that the Wild West Festival needed another sponsor, he knew that this was an opportunity to make Brother John’s vision a reality. “This is a legacy he wanted to leave,” Harris said. “He would want the community to see that their churches gather together around the cross.”

Woody Creek Bar-B-Q: 9 years in still No. 1 by mark k. campbell For nine years now, folks from all around have enjoyed the superior offerings of Woody Creek Bar-B-Q on the Springtown Square. From its beginnings in the backyard of Jimmy Neeley who cooked in an old bread truck, the popularity of the restaurant has been so great that there’s a location in Fort Worth, too. Here on the Square, Jimmy’s wife Mary and children Jimmy and Jennifer Neeley Smith carry on the tradition of Jimmy, Sr. who died in 2007. Woody Creek remains involved in the fabric of Springtown from catering varsity football games to giving food to organizations like Neighbor to Neighbors. The restaurant remains popular because of the high quality food. Both Jennifer and Mary said the ribs are exceptionally popular, and so is the famed Double Barrel, a giant baked potato stuffed with chopped barbecue as well as all the usual fixin’s. Another big seller is the Gunslinger – sliced hot links and sausage and chopped beef all under one giant bun. Customers return again and again to Woody Creek. Jennifer said, “I tell people to just try us once. You can’t please everybody, but I tell them ‘you will be back.’” The portions are impressive and that amplifies the store creed: “If you walk out of here hungry, it’s your fault.” Mary said a big reason for the business’ success is her talented crew. “We have a good staff – the best you could ask for.” That talented group can help you reserve one of the party rooms. Plenty of people have taken advantage of a room, Mary said, for birthday parties or anniversaries. A group of 20 or more can lay claim to one of the spacious areas by calling 817-220-2008. Still Waters Retreat Center: by carla noah stutsman What began as a weekend retreat in the country where Paul and Barb Claffey could “get away from it all” now provides the same opportunity for others. These days, their dream of a place where people can come and sit beside still waters and hear from God is fulfilled – but the dream just keeps getting bigger. Still Waters Retreat Center sits on 40 acres at the southern edge of Wise County – a short drive west on SH 199 to Agnes Road North, then not quite three miles to the entrance on the left. Still Waters’ Event Center is the perfect place for small (60 people maximum) corporate events, weddings, bridal and baby showers, family reunions, holiday and special event parties, church and/or youth groups and various other gatherings. The heated and air-conditioned Event Center offers a full kitchen, two baths, outside showers, inside and outside fireplaces, large and small covered gazebos, a large covered porch, granite serving counter, a large flat screen TV with CD/DVD player, and seating for 60, including seating on the porch. There is also an outdoor charcoal grill and picnic area, and WiFi is available upon request. If your event – or your weekend getaway for two – requires lodging, there’s plenty to choose from. The Still Waters Cabin offers two single beds downstairs and six upstairs, two full baths, a fully equipped kitchen, DirecTV/ DVD/CD player, a cozy living room with a fireplace, covered front and back porches, a stocked pond for fishing, a charcoal grill and fire pit, complimentary coffee, tea and creamers, and miles of walking trails on the secluded acreage. The Sun Rise Cabin features two bedrooms, each with a queen-size bed, one full bath, a fully equipped kitchen, DirecTV/DVD/CD player, covered front porch, charcoal grill and fire pit, complimentary coffee, tea and creamers and a patio. Plus, the living room couch pulls out into a queen-size bed where two additional people can sleep for a total of six. Meadow Room “C” features

spectacular views of the countryside as well as gorgeous sunsets. Ravines and dry creek beds that become babbling brooks in rainy seasons crisscross the property. The Claffeys have bridged these in several locations to allow for crossing, and they have a couple more bridges in mind. They also plan to move their office – currently located in their home nearby – onto the center property. That will make meet-
ing with potential clients much easier. Future plans also include the expansion of the walking trails on the property, and, frankly, who knows what else the Claffeys will come up with. “God is truly blessing us,” Barb Claffey said. Brookshire’s: Groceries with friendly service and an engaging atmosphere by Natalie Gentry With the remodeling of the Brookshire’s in Springtown completed earlier this year, the staff has redoubled its focus on the store’s philosophy of superior service, quality products, and competitive prices. The remodel was completed earlier this year and the store celebrated its grand reopening Jan. 15 with more services and options for the customers. After all, the customer is their primary concern. In addition to the sushi bar that provides freshly made offerings every day, the store saw upgrades to the overall layout as well as the cakery and pharmacy. “The cakery now offers homemade items like fudge and tortillas – things we didn’t make here before,” said store manager Mark Baumann. The Brookshire’s Pharmacy was also remodeled to be both bigger and better. There is now more seating and an actual waiting area. In addition the Brookshire’s chain has created a pharmacy app that will allow customers to manage their family’s prescriptions right from their smartphones. With versions for both iPhone and Android, the app enables customers to: •Refill prescriptions •Create secure login to view prescription history and status •Browse health and drug information •Locate and contact your pharmacy •Receive notifications when it’s time to refill prescriptions and when they are ready to pickup This app joins the Brookshire’s grocery app as ways to enhance customers’ shopping experience. The Brookshire’s app allows customers to make shopping lists, load up on coupons, browse recipes, and check out weekly sales – all with the their phone. Now that’s shopping in the digital age. Brookshire’s employees are excited about the upcoming

But Wild West isn’t the only thing Brookshire’s supports in the Springtown community throughout the year. There’s Spirit of Christmas; Relay for Life; numerous food drives for Neighbor to Neighbors; and countless donations of gift cards, food items, and drinks to Springtown ISD schools and events. Just last month the store collected donations of Gatorade for the local fire and police depart-
ments as part of a company-wide campaign. All in all they were able to contribute eight pallets of Gatorade to the cause. “I think people want to help, but they don’t always know how,” Baumann said. “This was an easy way for them to help their community, and I’m very thankful for the citizens of Springtown.” Baumann went on to say Springtown is a great town to live and work in. “This community really reaches out and helps everyone, whenever there’s a need,” he said. “We just try to do our part, as well.”

Stagecoach symbolized civilization during the wooly Wild West days Popular Wells Fargo coach returns to WWF by Natalie Gentry The Wells Fargo stagecoach is scheduled to make its annual appearance in the Wild West Festival’s annual parade Saturday, Sept. 20. Missy Grubis, Springtown branch manager, said she receives requests every summer inquiring if the stagecoach will ride again. Luckily, the answer has been pretty consistent. Grubis said she usually schedules the iconic artifact of bygone days in December each year for the following September. While the 30th annual festival is all about fun, it undeniably also celebrates the more colorful facets of Springtown’s history including pioneers, bank robbers, cowboys, and gunfights. The stagecoach was an integral to civilizing the wild western frontier – a symbol of getting money, mail, and passengers across the continent – and the Springtown Wells Fargo branch arranges for it to be in the parade each year. This year is no different, the Wells Fargo stagecoach will once again feature in the Wild West Festival parade, which begins at
10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20. The parade route will circle much of the commercial section of the town; beginning at Brookshire’s parking lot on State Highway 199. It will roll west on the highway to the intersection with FM 51 where it will head north, past Tabernacle Square, turn right again on Second Street, and travel east to Springtown Elementary. The Springtown branch of Wells Fargo is located at 201 South Main Street, on the southwest corner of Tabernacle Square. Lobby hours are MondayThursday 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. The drivethrough is open Monday-Thursday 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 8 a.m.- 6 p.m., and Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Grubis and her staff make it their mission to offer a hometown touch to your banking needs, so call 817-220-4823 for additional information. Then find a spot to watch the parade and keep an eye out for that classic symbol of the West; the Wells Fargo stagecoach.
