Atheists force postponement of AISD assemblies Youth rally at church conducted anyway by carla noah stutsman Two assemblies scheduled in Azle secondary schools last week were postponed after the Azle Independent School District (AISD) received a letter of protest from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). According to AISD Assistant Superintendent Tanya Anderson, the letter arrived after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. The assemblies were scheduled for the following day at Azle High School and Forte Junior High. The assemblies were to have been
put on by The Seven Project, also known as Seven at Schools, which – according to its website – produces school assemblies that deal with real life and character issues faced by students. The programs include video segments with a variety of topics that include anti-violence, scholastic achievement, peer pressure, integrity, substance abuse, abstinence, and others. Five area churches worked together to bring The Seven Project school as-
semblies to Azle; the assemblies were to be capped off with a Wednesday evening event at The Church At Azle. In spite of the FFRF’s success in getting the daytime assemblies at the schools postponed – or maybe because of it – that Wednesday evening youth rally took place anyway, filling The Church At Azle to standing room only. According to Pastor Mike Miles of The Church At Azle, Azle First Assembly of God was actually the host church for the event, and Miles’

Election projection: Voters approve street tax extension
A 9-year-old boy was injured in a spectacular three-car accident at the entrance to Walmart Wednesday, Oct. 29 about 4:45 p.m. A white 2011 Ford F150 pickup driven by Hershel Lee Pearson, 75, of Paradise, was northbound on Boyd Road turning left into Walmart on a green – but unprotected – light. He turned in front of a white 2000 BMW 3 Series driven by Renee Lynn Vongpathoum, 39, of Boyd. The boy was a passenger in Vongpathoum’s car, which was southbound on Boyd Road with a green light. The pickup and the BMW collided when Pearson made an unsafe turn, noted the police report. The pickup flipped onto its side, landing on top of a silver 2003 Infiniti G35 driven by George Samuel Byers, 24, of Reno. Byers was sitting at the stop light waiting for a green light when the accident occurred. The boy was transported to Texas Health Azle for treatment Photo by Carla Noah Stutsman

This Week in Azle History
BY CARLA NOAH STUTSMAN While votes were still being counted in many races at press time, the News projects that Azle voters approved the renewal of a one-fourth of one percent sales and use tax for maintenance and repair of existing city streets. At press time, the proposition was passing overwhelmingly by a vote of 1,568 for (or 87.2 percent) to 230 against (12.8 percent), Azle City Secretary Norma Zenk said. A total of 1,798 votes were cast in the local election. No information was available for Proposition 1 in the city of Reno, which, if passed, would enact a onefourth of one percent sales and use tax for maintenance and repairs to city streets. Incumbent Tarrant County Commissioner in Precinct 4 J.D. Johnson (R) was leading Democratic challenger Steve Lerma with 63.53 percent of the vote to Lerma’s 36.47 percent. Early returns showed Tarrant County voters, like those statewide, were
overwhelmingly in favor of State Proposition 1, which would earmark funds for highway construction, maintenance and rehabilitation projects, excluding toll roads. By 9 p.m., all statewide races in the state of Texas – including the races for U.S. Senate, Texas Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, Land Commissioner, Agriculture Commissioner and Railroad Commission Place 2 – had been projected as Republican wins. In the governor’s race at press time, Greg Abbott (R) had received 60.5 percent compared to Wendy Davis’ (D) 37.9 percent. Early in the evening, Abbott was declared the winner. He will replace Rick Perry who has held the office since December 2000. At the national level, early returns indicated Republicans would retain control of the House and retake control of the Senate by 10 seats. Final tabulations can be found in the next News on Nov. 12.

Feeding hungry students Backpack program gives hundreds of AISD children food weekly by mark k. campbell “You don’t learn when you’re hungry.” That’s what Andy Rector told the Azle Rotary Club Oct. 30. Thousands of Azle ISD children go home every weekend with food prospects low or almost non-existent. That’s where Azle residents and groups rise up, trying to end that scourge. Every Friday afternoon during the school year, more than 400 children receive a backpack full of enough food to get them through Saturday and Sunday. AISD counselors determine which children need the sustenance. Actually, Rector said, the Azle backpack program is so efficient and effective that it is used as the model for other cities starting such a program up. “No one does it like Azle,” Rector said. “The Food Bank uses Azle as a model.” Here, it’s a five step process. First, every Wednesday, food is bagged at the Tarrant Area Food Bank in downtown Fort Worth. Then, those bags are picked up each Thursday by volunteers from Azle’s Caring Community Center. “This simply wouldn’t happen without the Tarrant Food Bank and the Caring Center,” Rector said. Thirdly, Azle police officers – and, in Parker County, Sheriff’s Department personnel – collect the bags and take them to every AISD campus except the high school. The fourth step is performed by school personnel who determine which children need the bags. The fifth step, Rector said, is the last group that is responsible for the program – the groups and individuals that fund the backpack programs.

Andy Rector holds a bag of food that goes home with over 400 AISD students every Friday during the school year, giving some kids who have little or nothing something to eat over the weekend. Photo by Mark K. Campbell The annual cost is $75,000 and that number will go up because more students than ever are in need. Initially there was a degree of shame at being the kid that has to take a backpack home, Rector said. Now, in the program’s seventh year, that is no longer the case. “The stigma is gone,” Rector said. “The children are hungry; they want food.” He detailed an incident where a child’s grades began to improve – because the student, a backpack recipient, was no longer arriving on Monday mornings hungry. “The backpacks have an immediate impact,” Rector said. Soon, the program will be out of its reserve cash that allowed it to survive rising costs. Each bag costs $6. Students receive a free backpack and a
second if the original one is lost. One pack can hold multiple bags if a family has more than one needy child – even if the children are not yet of school age. The bags contain nothing that requires refrigeration or heating. All funds the group receives go into the program. “One hundred percent of all the money stays here in Azle,” Rector said. “No one is making any money.” He added that the backpack program is a venture for churches and groups that can volunteer at the Tarrant Area Food Bank
and get Azle area food banks credit. Children can be sponsored for $220 annually – the cost for one child for one school year. A pilot program that began at Liberty and Cross Timbers Elementary schools seven years ago is now essential throughout the AISD. “We have kids in the district who don’t have anything to eat on weekends,” Rector said. “This doesn’t solve the problem, but it makes it much better. “It’s an incredible program. It’s shows someone cares about them.”

Trouble over church and state n Trouble, FROM PAGE ONE.
youth pastor Kyle Embry, author of Hidden in Plain Sight: America’s Unreached Mission Field, a book about how public schools are an untapped resource for churches seeking to proselytize.” The letter did not seek the postponement or cancellation of the school assemblies; however, it requested the AISD not allow Seven at Schools’ presentation to contain any stories promoting religion, invitations to religious events outside of school, or other proselytizing content or materials. It also requested written notification of the steps the AISD takes to address what FFRF alleges is a potential constitutional violation. A church’s position Miles likened the school assemblies presented by Seven at Schools to Shattered Dreams, a dramatization of an alcohol-related crash on or near the AHS campus every other year to teach students about the consequences of the decisions they make – specifically about drinking and driving. The school assemblies put on by Seven at Schools don’t address religion, but handouts were to include information about a youth rally slated for the same evening at The Church At Azle. Students were notified about the school assemblies and were provided “opt-out” forms to use if they or their parents did not want the student to participate in the assemblies. “We were very disappointed in the cowardly way the FFRF informed the school district at such a late time,” Miles said. “They intentionally did it that way in order to scare the district into canceling the assemblies with a threat of a lawsuit.” Miles said his church has successfully held similar assemblies and rallies every two to three years; now he fears the AISD will react in fear anytime one is proposed in the future. He also pointed out that FFRF, in the opening paragraph of its letter to the AISD, stated it has more than 900 members in the state of Texas. “So 900 people – because they speak out for their cause – shut down the voices of millions,” Miles said. Another perspective Hiram Sasser is the director of litigation for The Liberty Institute in Plano, now the largest legal organization in America dedicated solely to defending and preserving religious liberty in America, with
clients, attorneys, and donors all across the nation. Sasser said that while the FFRF sends out about 1,000 demand letters per year, its limited budget only allows it to back up between eight and 12 of those cases each year with litigation. “I’d say there is almost a 99 percent chance of them doing nothing at all if you just throw their letter in the trash,” Sasser said. “Regardless of the letter, they don’t intend to take legal action in most cases – they don’t have the ability.” Put simply, the FFRF utilizes scare tactics to induce school districts to cancel events like the one in Azle, according to Sasser. Secondly, Sasser pointed out, is the question of whether the person complaining has legal standing in the matter. In order to enforce any claims, the complaining person must be directly affected by what they are complaining about. The only case Sasser is personally aware of in which the FFRF actually took a case to court in Texas was when they sued Gov. Rick Perry for his plans to hold a prayer rally at Reliant Stadium. “We represented the organizers of the prayer rally, and that case was kicked out because of no legal standing,” Sasser said. If an issue makes it past the scare tactic into court, and legal standing is actually proven, then comes the issue of validity. “From what I can tell from what I’ve read, this looks like a perfectly legitimate program that makes sure its presentations meet all legal requirements to be in a public school,” Sasser said. “It’s a nationwide program designed to comply with all the appropriate rules to be in public schools.” AISD: In the line of fire Anderson said the late arrival of the letter left little opportunity for the AISD to study any options. The letter was immediately forwarded to the district’s legal counsel, who advised postponement of both assemblies to allow time to research the options. The assemblies were officially postponed. But in the hearts and minds of some, they may as well have been canceled. “Why the Azle ISD shut down the assemblies is beyond my understanding, but, to be fair, they probably don’t have the intimate knowledge of the FFRF we do,” Sasser said. Miles said he does not blame any-
one at the school district for the decision to cancel. “They only reacted the best way they knew,” Miles said. “I pray that in the future they will seek the right advice with organizations on both sides of the debate.” Anderson said she could not comment about the content of the Seven at Schools assembly, citing the fact that the matter is currently under review by the AISD’s legal counsel. “We have seen some positive changes as the result of other assemblies, such as Rachel’s Challenge,” Anderson said. “This was a very difficult decision for us, but we have to be legal.” What the FFRF? According to its website, www. ffrf.org, the Freedom From Religion Foundation “works as an umbrella for those who are free from religion and are committed to the cherished principle of separation of state and church. The FFRF website provides those “freethinkers” with pages and pages of no doubt useful information and services. According to Lemin, the city has received a total of 31 applications for the position. “We are very early in the process right now, but we have identified those we feel are best qualified for our position and sent them supplemental information forms and questions to complete and return to us by next week,” Lemin said. “Once we receive those we will identify the candidates who we will invite for initial interviews. That should be between 10 and 15 applicants.” From there, Lemin said he
hopes to narrow the field down to the top four or five candidates. Those finalists will go through the final assessment and review process. Lemin said that final assessment and review will be quite in-depth but preferred not to discuss any details. “A candidate who is truly qualified to be Azle’s Police Chief will be able to handle anything we throw at them,” he said. Lemin said he hopes to have the position filled sometime early in 2015.

try and around the world for the seventh annual celebration of gaming in libraries. No matter your game of choice – board games, card games, and games which can be learned quickly – it will likely be available, and all are suitable for the whole family. “Libraries are family destinations, offering innovative programs and services that educate, entertain and expand interaction with their users,” said Nancy Novak, Children’s Librarian. “Gaming is yet an-
other example of how libraries are places where users of all ages are welcome to have fun together. International Games Day will exercise our brains, enable us to meet new people in an enjoyable environment, and celebrate our community’s connection to each other and to libraries around the world.” Library Director Curren McLane said the staff at AML is excited to partner with Collected Comics and Games for the event, as well. Auditions set for TOTS’ Bridesmaid
Senior Spotlight BY SUE TURNIPSEED The B J Clark Community Center is the location of many things happenings to help those over 60 years old to enjoy life and fellowship with other folks. Friday is Food Bank Day and we never know what the Tarrant Area Food Bank will send out to be distributed to those qualified for food. There were apples the last time and one person said they were in her refrigerator for her Thanksgiving cooking. Last Friday the pet food came and was distributed to those who had signed up. The Home Alone But Not Alone program helps to provide pet owners more money to purchase food for themselves. Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and all veterans who attend and eat at the Center will be honored. Without their serving to pro-
tect the country we would not have the freedom we all enjoy. If you are a veteran then we say THANKS. The November birthdays will be celebrated Nov. 12. There are 14 with birthdays this month and there is one couple, Dale and Penny Arn, who has an anniversary. The next AARP Drivers Class will be Nov. 27. Those wishing to attend should call 817-4440070 and get their name on the sign-up sheet for the class. Bridge players need to come in at 9 a.m. Friday to play. Come on down and bring a friend, then get in the group playing bridge. It is an opportunity to make new friends and have great fellowship. The director, Darlene Holmes, has a test scheduled for Nov. 11 – maybe she will find out when her health will allow her to return to work.

A poem by any other name will still be unread
I
try. Occasionally, I pick up a book of poetry and try to get through it. But, like with classical music or jazz, I soon find my mind wandering. Oh, certain pieces of high society art have stuck with me through the years. I know lots of classical music – well, bits of famous pieces – thanks to old Bugs Bunny cartoons I watched every Saturday morning as a kid. (Did you know that commercial channels no longer show Saturday morning cartoons? Now it’s all juicer infomercials and those endless American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals tearjerkers set to mournful Sarah McLachlan ballads. [Even she turns the channel when they come on, McLachlan says.]) I know that it’s very hip to like jazz. I am knowledgeable enough to drop names like Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, but I couldn’t make it through the former’s Kind of Blue, the “greatest jazz album of all time.” (However, I should also mention I know “Take Five” by Dave Brubeck, but only because it became a Top 40 hit in 1961, reaching No. 25.) Poetry is tough, too. As an English Literature minor, I’ve read a lot of
stuff. Just not much poetry. Oh, I can recite plenty of it, still entombed in my webby memory forever more, parts of “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe and some Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost. Poetry used to be the realm of the creative super writer, many pinned with the title of U.S. poet laureate. I’m sure you know our current one is Charles Wright. (Of course I Googled it!) It all started back in 1937 with Joseph Auslander. Occasionally, there’s a name in poets laureate history that is recognizable: Robert Penn Warren (1944-45 and again in 1986-87 when the title was changed to Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry); Frost (195859, owner of four Pulitzer Prizes! for poetry!), and James Dickey (1966-68 who I really only know for his novel Deliverance which I saw as a movie starring Burt Reynolds in a theater in downtown Dallas when I was a senior attending a National Beta Club function in 1972 and was forever more traumatized by the words “squeal like a pig” which has very little to do with poetry yet still conjures up vivid, troubling images). Poetry looks easy. Just like when reading a Stephen King book, one thinks, well, I could do that – until one tries. Like a Dr. Seuss book, simple
doesn’t mean easy. That’s not to say I haven’t had a go at writing poetry through the years. In the interest of full disclosure, the first thing I ON YOUR ever had printed – as a LeonMARK ard Middle Mark K. Campbell School eighth grader in 1970 – was a poem about Frankenstein’s Monster. However, my poetry winning streak ended at one. Still, I have bits and pieces of efforts stashed hither and yon. They stay stashed because they are horrible. Here’s an example, penned, it says on the rumbled piece of small lined notebook paper, on Sept. 3, 2003, not long before the singer Warren Zevon, most notable to mainstream mankind as the author of “Werewolves of London,” died. I recall the romantic setting where I scribbled way – behind Arlington Fire Station No. 15 after supper. I felt
inspired, but it must’ve been Scott’s stomaching-challenging cooking because this is what came out: He led a good life right up to the end, Always “weird” – something he never bothered to defend. He wrote and sang what he saw and heard. And often pressed on beyond the absurd. A hit in his youth among those off the path, Yet not a giant success; he never sweated the math. He roamed where he wanted and few can say that. His lifework was everywhere, to be exact. Pee-yew! Thankfully for humanity, we caught a major accident and the poem crashed and burned, never returned to. My eighth grade poem was way better. Amazingly, no one has yet contacted me to be the next Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry. Still, I feel I’m not living life to its fullest by not consuming some poetry at least occasionally. So, when I was at the Azle Memorial Library and saw a “free book” rack, I stopped. What better way to expand one’s mind than to do it for free. There, curiously untouched (and
maybe never opened), was a 1966 translation of Russian poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko. Bratsk Station and Other New Poems was issued as part of a series called “Books that Matter” by an Australian publisher. You can tell it’s important right off the bat because the poems don’t rhyme. Back in ‘66, a rhyming app for phones was in its earliest stages. I cracked the book open, determined to cram some culture in me no matter what. How fitting that, in early November, I fell on page 203 and “Autumn”: Inside me the season is autumn, the chill is in me, you can see through me, and I am sad, but not altogether cheerless, and filled with humility and goodness. But if I rage sometimes, then I am the one whose rage is shedding my leaves –– Zzzzzzzz. Huh? What?! Sorry I dozed off there. Maybe I could hang in there with it more if Foghorn Leghorn was reading it... Mark K. Campbell is the News editor and has destoryed an enormous amount of self-penned poetry. You’re welcome.
Letter to the Editor Latest Obama scandal: Israeli snub
Moreover, PM Netanyahu is not a stupid man; he knows that Mr. Obama is behind this scandal. The obnoxiousness and arrogance of Mr. Obama to disrespect PM Netanyahu is a window to his soul on how he really feels about Israel. The last time I checked Scripture in the Holy Bible, this is what almighty God himself says about nations that go against His chosen people, the Jews: “Every tongue that accuses you in judgement will be condemned.” Isaiah 54:17. Mr. Obama, if you’re a non-believer – and there’s that pesky seven letter word again, “witness”: you walk in what you say as opposed to what you do – this is a moot point.
Dear Editor: The elections are just around the corner and so is the chance to show the world how America is a free country with checks and balances concerning the integrity of truthful government in our elected officials. But, unfortunately, some people destroy that same witness as in another doggone scandal from this feckless administration of President Obama. Just this week, we now learn that someone on the president’s personal staff gave an interview to a news medium – the Atlantic Journal – that traduced and maligned our close ally, Prime Minister Netanyahu of Israel, Joseph L. Bryan with falsehoods and vulgarity. How can you go West and fail, but actually succeed?
N
athaniel Wyeth spent five years in the West and failed, but he is remembered favorably by Western historians anyway. How did that happen? Born Jan. 29, 1802 near Cambridge, Massachussets, Wyeth helped his father run a hotel the family owned instead of going to nearby Harvard like his older brother. In winter he cut and moved huge blocks of ice for hotel use in the summer and for export. That was hard work, so when Bostonian Hall Jackson Kelley began a society in 1829 to settle Oregon, Wyeth joined. He even helped Kelley recruit. However, when plans were postponed, Wyeth formed his own company to trade for furs to bring back East to sell. Wyeth mortgaged and borrowed in order to finance his Pacific Trading Company. Mid-April 1832 found him and his men in St. Louis ready to start West. Fortunately, a couple of veterans of the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, Kenneth McKenzie and William Sublette, took the greenhorn group
THE
of less than 20 men in hand and let them travel with them. Consequently, about 80 men left Independence, Missouri on May 12 and marched 25 miles per day. Wyeth called himself “Captain” of his little group and sometimes ignored the advice of the experienced mountain men, with disastrous results. While crossing the Laramie River one of Wyeth's poorly packed rafts upset and lost its cargo. By the time they passed South Pass, some of his men voted to return home. With the remainder, he joined another experienced group and traveled north-westward into present Idaho. At a place called Pierre's Hole, 200 Gros Ventures attacked, but were fought off. Wyeth and his group later reached a Hudson's Bay Company post on the Columbia River near Fort Walla Walla. By October 1832 they were at Fort Vancouver at the mouth of the Columbia River (near present Portland, Oregon). A ship that Wyeth hired back in Boston, the Sultana, was supposed to meet them at Fort Vancouver, but it had been wrecked in the South Pacific.
What few men remained in Wyeth's group unanimously asked to be released from their contract. Wyeth was convinced that money could be made somehow through trade with Oregon. PAGES FROM He spent the examinWESTERN winter ing the possiHISTORY bilities of packsalmon and J’Nell L. Pate ing shipping it back East. He found two of his men and persuaded them to return to the Rocky Mountains to pick up furs they had cached (stored) earlier. He also attended the annual summer rendezvous of fur trappers on the Green River where Wyeth met up with most of the wellknown fur trappers of the day. That visit influenced Wyeth to conceive of a plan to sell the fur trappers each year at the rendezvous all of the

supplies they needed for the following year's hunt and do it cheaper than Will Sublette had been charging. Wyeth returned home to complete his plans, reaching Boston by November 1833. Men from his original party reached Boston before him and complained of Wyeth's lack of ability to handle the Western enterprise that he was suggesting. By mid-April 1834 he headed up the Missouri River with supplies in a race to reach the rendezvous ahead of Sublette. Wyeth lost. Ever full of alternative plans, he constructed a fort on the Snake River as a permanent fur trading post, naming it Fort Hall for one of his investors. (It was at present Pocatello, Idaho.) Fort Hall became the most important trading post in the Snake River valley until 1860. Over 270,000 people stopped at it on the Oregon Trail. Wyeth spent two more winters in the Northwest trapping and trying to make deals with the Hudson's Bay Company to buy his furs, but to no avail. He was back in Boston by the fall of 1836, having spent $20,000 and five years in trying to start business ventures in the

Oregon Country. The next year he sold Fort Hall and also Fort William, to the Hudson’s Bay Company. In Boston he returned to work for the same ice company where he previously labored, but for three times the salary. In the next 15 years he earned 14 patents for improving machinery to cut and store ice. He also shipped refrigerated garden produce from his own and others’ farms all the way to the tropics. When Nathaniel Wyeth died in 1856, friends praised him for opening up Boston’s trade and for inventing nearly every implement used in the ice business. Surprisingly, his five years in the West put him in the history books, not his career in ice. Wyeth wrote about his Oregon experiences for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs in 1839, which influenced Congress to support American interests in Oregon. A town, Wyeth, Oregon, is located on the Columbia River today. Retired history professor J’Nell Pate of Azle has authored several books, many of which are on sale in the lobby of the Azle News.

Secretary of State posts early voting turnout numbers
T
he Secretary of State’s Elections Division on Oct. 31 posted early voting turnouts for each of the state’s 15 highest-population counties: Harris, Dallas, Tarrant, Bexar, Travis, Collin, Denton, El Paso, Fort Bend, Hidalgo, Montgomery, Williamson, Galveston, Nueces and Cameron. Of the 8,978,313 registered voters in those counties, 1,715,731 voted early in person or by mail. That’s a 19.11 percent cumulative early voting percentage. To compare with the last midterm election, in 2010, the cumulative early voting total for those 15 counties was 1,731,589 ballots cast out of 8,339,034 registered voters, or 20.76 percent of the total. After polls close at 7 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 4, anyone with an Internet connection will be able to access vote tabulations posted by the Office of the Secretary of State’s at the website www.sos.state.
tx.us. Election results in races for statewide offices will be recapped in next week’s State Capital Highlights column. Governor greets Toyota Gov. Rick Perry on Oct. 27 welcomed New York, N.Y.based Toyota Motor North America Inc. to Plano, where its new headquarters will be built. The manufacturer’s relocation to Plano is supported by a $40 million investment from the business-luring Texas Enterprise Fund administered by the governor’s office. The facility, to be completed in late 2016 or early 2017, will bring nearly 4,000 jobs and more than $300 million in capital investment to North Texas, according to Perry’s Oct. 27 statement. Toyota Motor North America, combined with 21 onsite suppliers, already supports some 6,000 jobs in San Antonio, including 2,900 from its $2.3 billion manufacturing plant. TxDOT ends gravel policy Texas Department of Trans-
portation in the summer of 2013 announced a plan to convert 83 miles of “significantly damaged p a v e d STATE roads” in CAPITAL the EaHIGHLIGHTS gle Ford S h a l e Ed Sterling e n e r g y producing region to gravel surface as a temporary budget-cutting measure. In an Oct. 24 letter to the Legislative Budget Board, TxDOT announced the formal termination of its “high-end unpaved road conversion policy” and requested access to $402 million in additional funding for Fiscal Year 2015 with half going to safety projects across the state and the remainder toward
roadways affected by the state’s growing energy sector. Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst praised TxDOT’s announcement, saying, “Texas families and businesses in both rural and urban areas deserve a comprehensive first-rate transportation system and they’ll get it.” Nurse recovers from Ebola Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Dr. David Lakey on Oct. 28 expressed relief when Amber Vinson, a nurse with Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, was declared free of the Ebola virus last week. She was in isolation and receiving treatment at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. “We are so pleased that Amber Vinson has been declared free of Ebola. She is one of the health care workers who bravely provided care to the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States. Through excellent health care and her own courage, she beat the disease. Based on the clinical and lab
findings, people are not at risk of getting the disease from her, and she has been completely cleared. We wish her the best as she transitions back to a normal life, and we welcome her back home to Texas,” Lakey said in an official statement. Summit focuses on bullying “Bullying remains one of the most prevalent and widely discussed topics pertaining to school safety and security,” Texas Education Agency announced during Texas Safe Schools Week, Oct. 19-25. During the week, Texas School Safety Center at Texas State University in San Marcos and the Texas Education Agency spotlighted resources available to help school districts and charters address and combat bullying and cyber-bullying on campuses. Also, Texas School Safety Center presented the 2nd Annual Texas Bully Prevention Summit on Oct. 30 in San Marcos.
Drought conditions persist Gov. Perry on Oct. 28 announced the renewal of the emergency disaster proclamation the governor originally had signed in July 2011, certifying that exceptional drought conditions posed a threat of imminent disaster in specified counties in Texas. This month, the proclamation applies to 98 of the state’s 254 counties. In contrast, the proclamation applied to 113 specified counties last month. The drought proclamation directs that “all necessary measures, both public and private” as authorized by state law “be implemented to meet that threat” and “all rules and regulations that may inhibit or prevent prompt response to this threat are suspended for the duration of the state of disaster.” Veteran state reporter and legislative analyst Ed Sterling is member services director for the Texas Press Association, whose 518 member newspapers have combined circulation of 3.7 million.

re you as tired as I of the negativity and hyperbole of the election season? Thankfully, we can soon move on to what’s next. Something that amazes me is how those who come in second (a much nicer term than “losers”) congratulate and commit to work with those whom they have spent the past months vilifying. I guess they are hoping that their controversial and accusatory statements will be forgotten and they will still have a place at the table. I’m not much into making controversial statements. I am, however, into making statements and asking questions that cause people to pause and think. I made a couple of those in last week’s column, “What happens when wisdom meets energy?” I think there are a couple of near-universal truths here: 1. Most young leaders think they are wiser than they really

leaders need humility to allow someone to speak into their lives. Older leaders need humility to value the wisdom that young leaders do have and to resist the temptation to “talk down” to them. When I think of an effective mentoring relationship, I think of Paul and Timothy. In 1 and 2 Timothy we see how Paul talked “to” Timothy. In Romans, 1 & 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, and Philemon, we see how Paul talked “about” Timothy. Both matter. No matter where we are on the age spectrum, we have much to learn and much to share. What is the next step for you in the quest to connect wisdom and energy?

Hornet rally locks in postseason berth Azle plays for 5-5A title in Wichita Falls
by mark k. campbell On Senior Night at Hornet Field an already memorable football season got racheted up another notch when Azle (8-1, 5-1) rallied to beat – and eliminate – archrival Brewer, 29-24. The victory, combined with a win by Wichita Falls Rider, put the Hornets in a position to do something only six other AHS football teams have done – win a district championship. That hasn’t happened in 20 years. In a district where team positions were jumbled through the season, when the dust settled in week 10, all playoff positions were suddenly settled. Azle not only knows its bidistrict foe, but know when and where they will see the loser of the Lake Dallas-Fort Worth Dunbar game – at Saginaw Chisholm Trail HS at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14. But first there’s that little matter of a district title. Azle had to beat Brewer to have a shot at it and things didn’t look great early. Hornet defenders Sean Townsend (32), Rylee McCracken (26), and Trey Ramos (5) The Bears came to play, take down a Brewer Bear running back. Photo courtesy Bill O’Connor Azle coach Devon Dorris said.
ACS district champs again Back again. The mighty Azle Christian School Crusaders (9-0) won its fifth straight district championship with a 48-0 blowout of Weatherford Christian School. ACS is eyeing its third state title in the last five years. To stay perfect in 2014, the Crusaders were led by QB Joey Rosamond and wide receiver Alex Schardt. The duo combined for 9 receptions for 192 yards and 5 TDs. Rosamond finished 19-of25 for 325 yards and 6 touchdowns. Josh Crawford scored a TD among his 60 yards rushing. Also scoring was end Oscar

They were prepared and they were fired up.” The visitors bolted out to a 10-0 lead. “I think we were a little complacent, “ Dorris said. “But we made the adjustments.” When Justin Willett scored from the 2, AHS got on the board. But a high PAT snap kept the score at 10-6. Then Brewer’s Eric Worlds, who would score three touchdowns, got his second TD. The half arrived with Brewer – in a must-win game to keep slim playoff hopes alive – ahead 17-6.
But Azle had a big third quarter, scoring 20 points including a 56-yard punt return to paydirt by Trey Ramos. (Unlike in Denton the previous week, this one was not negated by a penalty.) That followed a Jamie King short TD run. After Brewer answered, Bryce Gum ran in from the 14 and Dylan Tritton’s kick gave Azle a slim 26-25 lead into the final period. But, there was plenty of nailbiting football left. Tritton kicked a 32-yard field goal to up AHS’ margin to 2925. But the Bears pushed into Hornet territory late, to the Azle 25. However, the AHS D got the stop, with Ramos knocking away a fourth down pass. However, the Hornets coughed up the ball, giving Brewer new hope. Yet, the Azle D defense did it again. Dorris said among the Hornets’ standout plays were a great one-handed catch by Dalton Cole in the red zone and two exceptional kick off returns. When the horn finally sounded, Azle had won again.

Long XC run ends at regional Fastest boys team in AHS history can’t advance by mark k. campbell What more can you do? The Azle boys team ran faster than any Hornet squad in history at the Region I meet Oct. 31 at Lubbock’s Mae Simmons Park. But it wasn’t enough. Azle finished seventh overall. Coach Keith Boenisch said, “We ran unbelievably well. All seven guys PR’d and we had a team average of 16 minutes, 31 seconds. “Any other year, that goes to state.” But not in 2014. Five Hornets ran under 17 minutes which had occurred just one time earlier at AHS, in 2010. Never had an Azle team had all seven racers finish under 17 minutes. Jake Self led the way with a smoking time of 16:10 over the three-mile course. He was quickly followed in by Julian Hernandez in 16:18. In the next 41 seconds, three more Hornets crossed the finish line – Chris McGill (16:35), Cody Drolet (16:51), and Dylan Tritton (16:59). Coach Boenisch said, “This was the fastest [Azle] team ever to run that course.” Seniors Self, Tritton, and Chris Medellin competed for Azle for the final time. Boesnich said, “I am very proud of them – just wish we could have qualified.” It took a top four finish to advance to the state meet. The Lady Hornets were led by senior Sarah Perna who ran a personal best of 19:38 on the challenging course. Coach Melody Dennis said Perna was one of four seniors who shone during the season – Sydney Bivens, Misty Self, and Chasity Sellers “have put in a lot of time, effort, and sweat and they will be greatly missed.” Dennis said 2014 was great for Azle, who finished 15th in
Brewer proved to be a tough foe as Azle junior varsity and freshman teams posted a mark of 1-2. The JV Green combined with the White to face the Bears in White Settlement. Azle lost, 32-12. Coaches noted that AHS played much better in the second half, blanking the hosts. In the first half, Justin Miller hit Tyler Barnard for a 58-yard TD strike. In the second half, a Miller reverse pass for 32 yards gave AHS 6 more points. Coaches said too many 3-and-outs offensively doomed the Hornets. The 9th Green (6-3) blasted the Bears 41-18. Six different players scored TDs. Jake Norwood threw for one score and ran for a second. Also crossing the goal line with “highlight reel runs” were Gamble Moore, Jordan Mc-

Neely, JT Fugate, and Luke Holian. Coaches said it was all possible because of the solid offensive line led by Louis LaMorte and Dylan Temple. Defensively, “Brewer struggled moving the ball as the Hornets shut down their outside game,” said coaches. Leading that charge for AHS was Cody Donnell, Cale McDonnell, and Solomon Moreno as well as Andrew Lutz and Shawn Joseph. Shining in the defensive backfield were Colby Christian and Dylan Flynn. The 9th White lost a close one, 14-6. The game was delayed for a while because of lightning then played on a continuous clock. Azle scored when Gavin Coffee threw 25 yards to Colby Tatge. The White defense was led by Brandon Sharp who intercepted a Brewer pass.

HORNET HISTORY: DISTRICT TITLES
The Raiders run a spread offense and have two exceptional receivers (one 6-4, one 6-6), Azle coach Devon Dorris said. The game will decide the District 5-5A championship but have no bearing on playoff seeding. Rider also has a talented quarterback, Dorris said, who is RHS’ top rusher. The Raiders pulled off a couple of late-game miracles to defeat Boswell and Brewer, beating the Bears on the final play of the game with a TD pass. Defensively, Rider has given up some points, but, Dorris said, “They are getting better, growing as a team.”

Nightcrawler like an old school 70’s crime drama “Gritty” movies have been around for a while. From the film noir pictures of the 1940’s and early ‘50’s to the realistic crime movies of the 1970’s, there’s a history of dark, macho movies that evolved into a genre. Today, movies that look a certain way are deemed to be a throwback to those “gritty films of the ‘70’s” – like Dog Day Afternoon (1975) or Serpico (1973.) And this week’s movie, Nightcrawler, is another modern movie that is a mirroring of that era’s style. Now, having said all that in this introduction, let’s go off in a different direction. About the film (kinda) Another genre off–the-beaten path folks can venture down in theaters is the weirdo movie, the indecipherable, the movie that doesn’t spell everything out, that leaves things unattended to or flat-out mysterious. Nightcrawler stars Jake Gyllenhaal and he once had the lead in of those queer classics. But, before we get to that one – that itself is a freak of nature even in that huh? genre – here’s a couple of movies that have defied traditional conclusions. Naturally, there are short or basically unheard of films that dare to be non-conformist for non-conformist’s sake. However, occasionally a mainstream movie comes along that is left open to interpretation. Perhaps the most famous is 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Even today, it’s either beloved or detested, for its creeping pace as well as its curious, sensoryaltering ending that thousands have taken a crack at solving. Even today, the film remains an enigma with plenty of guesses but no definitive answers. Another movie, far less popular but a film school regular and a bona fide “cult classic” is Mulholland Dr. (2001). Made by the wonderfully weird David Lynch, the movie is seen by many as incoherent. It’s not,
but, like many of its ilk, Mulholland Dr. requires multiple viewings. Is it a dream? If so, when does the dream begin? Or end? What’s with the little (literally) old couple? And that dumpster scene? Lynch, in a DVD extra, gave viewers some “things to watch for” to help them crack the movie. (One hint comes before the opening credits; another is a red lamp.) The clues likely caused more confusion than before, which is very Lynchian. Then there’s Donnie Darko (2001) starring Gyllenhaal. It had the great misfortune of coming out just a month after 9/11 – and there’s a plane crash in it. The film disappeared from theaters but found a gigantic home audience. The movie is very strange and, to boot, contains two fantastic music montages (to Tears for Fears’ “Head Over Heels” and Gary Jules’ “Mad World” [originally a Tears for Fears song (done very differently by the duo)]). The picture is a mishmash of many genres, including time travel sci-fi, horror, mystery, and family drama. For years, fans debated Donnie Darko’s meaning. Then, came a first: Director Richard Kelly released a special edition that explained everything. Fans were beside themselves that the creative genius had dared to explain himself. It was unheard of. Kelly not only dashed scores of longpondered theories but raised the ire of so many.

carnage. After seeing the footage the next day on TV, Gyllenhaal is sure he can do the job. With a cheap video camera, he manages to slowly build a reputation selling grisly footage to Nina (Rene Russo), the news director to the lowest rated TV station in town. Gyllenhaal eventually hires an “intern,” Rick (Riz Ahmed), and the duo becomes the top nocturnal crime chasers – nightcrawlers – in town. Soon, Gyllenhaal has a fast car and, with his calm yet slightly menacing demeanor, he has Russo in a desperate situation – she needs what he has. But, in his quest to be first and goriest, Gyllenhaal begins bending the rules, first moving a bloody body so he can get a better shot, then beating even the police to a triple homicide where he films not only the bodies but the killers’ escape. He decides to rig a meeting where the killers and the cops The plot converge in a situation where Bloom is a strange fellow, a he can film what will surely thief who barely gets by steal- be a massacre. The scene where they go out on a “date” is full-bore unsettling, with Gyllenhaal’s bug eyes and skull-like grin and Russo’s sad knowledge that she knows where this relationship is going amping things up. The film is an homage to those grainy ‘70’s movies, all the way down to the curious resemblance Ahmed has to John Cazale from Dog Day Afternoon to the way the film literally looks to the anti-hero plot where justice isn’t exactly served to the “city being a character.”
Best scene The sequence where Gyllenhaal has orchestrated the two killers arriving in a late-night Chinese restaurant and the arrival of two sets of cops steadily builds tension. Soon, the dread is thick: Four cops are in the diner and so are the killers as well as innocent customers – all the while Gyllenhaal and Ahmed are in position to film the entire encounter.

Summing up Certainly, Nightcrawler is an adult, old school crime drama that won’t be for everyone. It’s rough and creates an uneasy atmosphere. But, for the right audience, it’ll be a hit. And no special director’s cut will be needed to explain what’s going on onscreen.

Veterans Day 95 years old by mark k. campbell When the “war to end all wars” – WWI – finally came to an official end in June 1918, fighting had already stopped seven months before. That was because a temporary cessation of battle, an armistice, had been signed back in November. Since that cease-fire was begun on the “11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month,” November 11 was the day chosen by President Woodrow Wilson to honor those who fought in the Great War. Christened Armistice Day in November 1919, every November 11 Americans acknowledged the great debt owed to so many. Originally, businesses were to close briefly at 11 a.m. every November 11 as Armistice Day was recognized with parades and public meetings. Already commemorated by 27 states, the day was officially sanctioned nationally on June 4, 1926 when Congress passed a resolution. Twelve years later, on May 13, 1938, Armistice Day became an American legal holiday, “a day dedicated to the cause of world peace” and remembering the sacrifices of
WWI vets. But more wars were fought. With the coming of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day on June 1, 1954; several veterans’ organizations pushed for the change. November 11 became a day to honor veterans of all wars and conflicts. In June 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was passed. Veterans Day – with Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, and Columbus Day – was moved to varying Mondays to give federal workers three-day holidays. The date change was not welcomed. First tried October 25, 1971, there was confusion throughout the country. In fact, many states did not honor the change at all and kept November 11 as the day they acknowledged as Veterans Day. President Gerald Ford, seeing the unpopularity of the Uniform Holiday Bill, signed a new law. He saw that Americans placed importance on November 11, historically and patriotically. So Ford, on September 25, 1975, moved Veterans Day of-

ficially back to November 11, a move that many state legislatures and service organizations supported. Today, Veterans Day is honored every November 11, re-
gardless of the day on which it falls, honoring veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to sacrifice and serve for the common good.

TRC adopts new rules aimed at reducing Texas earthquakes by carla noah stutsman Almost a year after Reno, Azle and Springtown residents felt the jolt of the first-ever earthquake in the area, the Texas Railroad Commission (TRC) adopted amended rules directed at disposal well operations in areas of historical or future seismic activity. On Tuesday evening, Nov. 5, 2013, the news spread quickly – the first known earthquake had occurred in the area. That was big news in itself, since none had ever been recorded in the tri-county area. But that initial earthquake, 2.6 in magnitude, was just the beginning – they just kept coming. On Tuesday, Nov. 19, several people attending a city council meeting at Azle City Hall discussed the quakes as they waited for the meeting to begin, and there were at least a couple who were not convinced the anomalies were, in fact, earthquakes. They became believers at 6:40 p.m. that evening, when a 3.6 magnitude tremblor shook the entire building with a sudden and very loud “bang.” That quake was the 11th recorded in the two weeks since they began. By the end of Janu-
ary 2014, there had been more than 30 quakes. Commissioner David Porter came to Azle with TRC staff members Jan. 8 to host a Town Hall meeting to receive input from area residents about the series of earthquakes. More than 800 people descended in the auditorium at Azle High School that evening, and most were already convinced that one or more injection wells used to dispose of wastewater from oil and gas wells were to blame. Shortly after that Town Hall meeting, the quakes stopped, just as suddenly and mysteriously as they had started. But area citizens, along with the mayors of both Azle and Reno, took the fight for more regulation for disposal wells to Austin, where they testified before a special sub-committee created by the Texas House to look into seismic activity in the state. In the meantime, researchers from Southern Methodist University installed seismographic equipment provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the area and began tracking seismic activity. The TRC hired its own seis-

the agency doesn’t stop there. “I appreciate the steps they have taken, and that they moved as quickly as they have,” Stokes said. “I’m sure it’s exasperating for them – it seems to me they both promote and regulate the oil and gas industry. I think they need to do one or the other.” Alan Brundrett, Azle’s Mayor, agreed with Stokes that the new rules are a good first step. “While the rules could have been more strict, I believe they are adequate for the time being,” Brundrett said. “The TRC did adopt a few of our suggestions which shows they did listen to what we said.” “They have been very good to work with – they stay in contact with me to inform me of any proposed new rules and they ask me for feedback,” he continued. “Overall I think the TRC has done a good job addressing our concerns and Rep. Phil King has been a big help with the whole earthquake situation.”

mologist, Dr. David Craig Pearson, in late March to explore the impact of seismic activity on gas and oil operations. On Oct. 28, about a week shy of the one-year anniversary of the first Azle/Reno area quake, the TRC unanimously adopted disposal well rule amendments they say are designed to address disposal well operations in areas of historical or future seismic activity. The main components of the adopted rule amendments, which become effective Nov. 17, are: • requiring applicants for new disposal wells to conduct a search of the U.S. Geological Survey seismic database for historical earthquakes within a circular area of 100 square miles around a proposed, new disposal well; • clarifying the Commission’s staff authority to modify or suspend or terminate a disposal well permit, including modifying disposal volumes and pressures or shutting in a well if scientific data indicates a disposal well is likely to be or determined to be contributing to seismic activity; • allowing Commission staff to require operators to disclose the current annually reported volumes and pressures on a more frequent basis if staff determines a need for this information; and • allowing Commission staff to require an applicant for a disposal well permit to provide additional information, including pressure front boundary calculations, to demonstrate that disposal fluids will remain confined if the well is to be located in an area where conditions exist that may increase the risk that the fluids may not be confined. Reno Mayor Lynda Stokes says she thinks the TRC’s adoption of amended rules is a step in the right direction, but hopes
