0.1 THE EXCURSION
The excursion in Berlin has been a great start into the project. The class was able to go around the city, see the most important buildings and monuments, visit museums and of course restaurants and bars. Each student has been assigned a bar to analyze in its features. Here is the RÜstStätte espresso bar in Ackerstr. 173.

0.2 SELF PRESENTATION
When the class came back from Berlin, the irst week was dedicated to presentations. All exchange students, including me, were asked to present themselves. My presentation included general infos about me, my town, my studies, my tastes in matter of architecture and design, and, in conclusion, some of the projects I ind more interesting.
10
0.3 BAR PRESENTATION
The next step has been to present the bar everyone had been assigned during the trip in Berlin. The presentation of the RöstStätte bar included an overall of the space (bar, shop, kitchen, toilets, a private area), a general loorplan of the bar area, pictures of interior details and some pros and cons.
11
0.4 GUERILLA BAR The irst real task for the class has been a one-week project of a guerilla bar counter.
be wiine.
Guerilla meint die aufständische Idee, ” dort zu treffen und zu versammeln, sich wo einer keinen vermutet. Unkonventionell und ohne Regeln.“
The bar counter was supposed to be something that could be built easily, and quickly start to use. My bar counter is meant as a counter for a wine bar, and it’s made of wooden panels, metal sticks and elastic bands to hold bottles and glasses. It’s modular, light to transport, and compressable. A small foldable lyer has been printed to present the project.

1.1 ZEMU ESPRESSO BAR EXHIBITION SHOP The bar was meant from the beginning as the cafè for an art gallery. The irst idea consisted in having an extra space where the unknown artist, who were not famous enough to expose their work into the art gallery, could show their art. Espresso bar, exhibition area and art shop were the elements of the bar. The image of the showcase is here reversed: the art gallery is the support for the real showcase, which is downstairs. The name relected the “reversed” character of the concept: Zému is an invented word in the french dialect “Verlan”, which consistes in cutting a word, “Musée” in this case, in two halves and reverse it to create a new one.

1.3 NO ART
After weeks and weeks of work a lot of changes were made and a lot of decisions were taken. As already in the irst Zému version, the showcase concept is expressed through the big glass window that opens right at the center of the bar, which is also part of the loor of the art gallery. The idea is to have both visitors see the clients of the bar, and clients see the visitors walking ‘above their heads’. The client is always seen when walking or enjoying a coffee in the center part of the bar. This is stressed by the “stage”: a marble platform 25cm high which gives the client the real feeling of being seen from everywhere.
24
The most important decision in this phase was to leave art out: no exhibition nor art shop in the bar. This is what artists, collectors and critics expect and want.
1.3 NO ART Some materials started to be deined. Marble, used for the big stage in the middle, plays the biggest role. The old-bricked walls are left untouched. The counter top is covered in slate, a natural stone that is both in contrast and in harmony with the marble.
Informality is required as the clients
are supposed to meet and talk a lot. The area around the stage is kept quite dark and confortable pillow seats help create an intimate atmosphere.

1.4 AUSTELLUNG KW SHOWCASE BAR STORYBOARD ispired by
“This is the sad tale of the township of Dogville
People are walking on the glass ceiling of the bar. Our character is about to walk down the staircase to get into the bar.
As the character enters the bar, the irst thing that he sees is the marble stage.
The character steps on the marble stage. He orders a coffee.
He sits on a table to drink his coffee. As he looks around him, he notices people in the shadow staring at him.
He looks up and he sees people walking above him. Being on the stage, in this moment he is seen from everyone and is defenseless.
The bar is seen from above, as the village of Dogville in the irst movie scene. The art gallery, bar and staicase are indicated as the streets in the town are.
26
1.4 AUSTELLUNG KW
The irst task of the Compact Week was to include the bar into a movie - or a movie into the bar. Imagine the scene of a movie as played in the bar. For the Showcase bar the movie Dogville byt Lars von Trier was chosen. The irst two frames completely relect the irst unforgettable scene of Dogville. The focus goes to the staircas where a person is going down, entering the bar. He steps on the stage and sits. Exactly as the scene of the girl trying to hide behind the non-existant wall, the character of the comic has no protection, as he is seen from everywhere.
27
1.4 AUSTELLUNG KW With the leading role of Franziska Stßbgen the class completed a week dedicated to the preparation of the Final Exhibition. Different groups presented different proposal for the organization of the room. The font was chosen, the layout for the lags set, the icons made.

THE IDEA ART GALLERY
BAR
30
The “Showcase Bar” is supposed to be the espresso bar for an art gallery. It’s meant to display: not art but the artist himself. And the artist is displayed through the big, rectangular glass ceiling that opens perfectly above the area, emphasized by a marble stage, where clients are supposed to move, order, chat. The space wants to be a place where artists, collectors and critics can meet. The mood is therefore informal, as the perimetric areas in shadow, illed with pillow seats instead of chairs, state.
31
THE USERS THE ARTISTS
The famous artists who wants to meet critics and collectors. The unknown artists who wants to promote himself. The exposing artists who just wants to relax.
THE CRITIC
who wants to talk with artists, discover new ones.
THE COLLECTOR

WALK-ON WINDOW The walk-on window is what makes the
space a “Showcase”. Through the glass the gallery’s visitors can see the bar’s clients moving around: the artist himself becomes the show. The visitor’s shadows are directly dropped onto the marble stage.

STAGE
The pedestal in the middle of the room is 25 cm high. It’s perfectly positioned under the window, emphasizing the light coming from it. The marble, being such a clear material, is the perfect surface for the visitor’s shadows from above to move around creating an everchanging shadow game. The stage is slighlty higher than a normal step , to give the client the feeling of having just stepped in a new dimension where he is seen by everyone.

SHOWCASE
A glass needs a case to become a “Showcase”. The external old-bricked walls are kept, while a new built-in wall, almost as high as the ceiling, outlines the shape of the actual bar. The room is very dark near the walls, in order to leave space for the light coming from above to low in the middle of the room
