2010 – 2011 Carleton University Ravens
Winners of six of the past eight CIS championships, the Carleton University Ravens men’s basketball team opens the 2010-11 season on a quest for its seventh national title under head coach Dave Smart. Last season, the Ravens captured their third consecutive Wilson Cup before falling to eventual national champions, the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, at the CIS Final 8 tournament in March.

Carleton will return all but one starter from last year’s squad, as CIS Second Team All-Canadian Kevin McCleery has graduated. The Ravens will look to hold up their reputation as the stingiest defensive team in the league as they were tops in the OUA last season, allowing an average of 63.1 points per game. One athlete who can help them achieve this goal is OUA East Defensive Player of the Year, Cole Hobin, who returns for his fourth year. Last season, the Ravens guard led his team with 12 blocks and 31 steals. He was a strong presence on the boards, collecting 109 rebounds, 77 of which were on the defensive end of the floor. Also returning for his fourth year is OUA East Second Team All-Star Elliot Thompson. The guard averaged 12.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in 2009-2010. Guard Mike Kenny will bring leadership to the team as he enters his fifth season at Carleton. He led the Ravens with 59 assists last season. Tyson Hinz will look to build on his solid rookie season. The 6’6 forward was named to the OUA East All-Rookie Team last season after averaging 11.6 points per game and ranking third in overall points on his team with 243. The Ravens will also feature a couple of new faces on this year’s roster, including brothers Philip and Thomas Scrubb, as well as Dan Penner, who was a redshirt last season.
What separates this program from others is the culture,” he says. “And I don’t just mean the culture of one particular team, but the culture that Ravens alumni began and have left in our hands to continue. The standard is set high and people are held accountable when they don’t meet the standard.

Men’s Head Coach
Smart is entering his 12th year as head coach of the men’s basketball team. In 11 years at the helm of the program, his regular and post-season record stands at an outstanding 288 wins and only 29 losses. He has earned CIS Coach of the Year honours three times along the way, as well as five OUA East Coach of the Year nods. With Smart at the helm, the team has won six OUA Championships and six CIS Final 8 National Championships in the past eight years, including five straight. Smart also served as an assistant coach with the 2008 Canadian Senior Men’s National Team.

Taffe Charles Women’s Head Coach
Charles is a former standout Ravens athlete who played for Carleton from 1990-1995. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Carleton women’s program in 1995 before moving over to the men’s program in 1998. He went on to win five CIS national championships as an assistant coach before returning to the women’s program as head coach in 2007. Charles was named the 2009-2010 OUA East Coach of the Year after the Ravens finished atop the OUA East division with a record of 18-4 and reached the OUA East final for the first time in the program’s history.

After being just steps away from advancing to the national championship last season, the Carleton University Ravens women’s basketball team enters the 2010-11 campaign with the hopes of winning a national title.

The team ended the 2009-2010 regular season with an 18-4 record, marking the most successful finish in the history of the program. The Ravens had a great playoff run, reaching the OUA East final for the first time in the program’s history. But the uOttawa Gee-Gees came away victorious and ended the Ravens’ season. “We were a very young team last year and although we only lose one starter, we will be even younger this year,” says 2009-2010 OUA East Coach of the Year, Taffe Charles. “That being said, we will probably be more talented than the year before which is a good reason to be optimistic about our chances this year.”
The Ravens have lost some leadership on and off the court this season as fifth-year forward Ines Jelic graduated in June. While the Ravens will miss Jelic’s presence, most of the team’s core is returning for the 2010-11 season. Fourth-year forward Ashleigh Cleary and fifth-year guard Courtney Smith will be looked to to provide some leadership to the young Raven team. Ravens guard and 2009-2010 OUA East First Team All-Star, Alyson Bush, is looking for another solid year on the court. She was the Ravens leading scorer last season, sinking 218 points in 22 games, an average of 9.9 points per game. Jessica Resch, the 2009-2010 OUA East Rookie of the Year, will look to build on her impressive start to her career with the Ravens. In her first season on the squad, the Orleans, Ont. native notched 168 points and pulled down 95 rebounds. The Ravens will welcome three new faces this year: guard Krista Van Slingerland, post Genavieve Melatti and forward Darcy Hawkins. Each one brings a strong skill set to Carleton’s lineup and Charles says they will be given the opportunity to get some good playing time this season.
