The Carleton University Ravens women’s soccer team saw many fresh faces last season, including head coach, Alex McNutt. The team is looking to improve on last year’s results that saw them finish the regular season with a 6-8-2 record for 20 points, putting them in fifth place. The young Raven team was eliminated from the postseason after falling 3-1 to the top-ranked Queen’s University Gaels in the OUA East semi-final. The team will take the field this fall without five graduating players; defender Emily Watt and midfielders Aisha Stinson, Gabrielle Charbonneau, Jennifer Crichton and Natalie Griffith. The Ravens veteran athletes will need to step up and fill some of the gaps. In her final year as a Raven, defenceman Kayla Wood has taken on the role of captain. Teammate Valerie Hamilton will also be looked to for leadership as she has been named the team’s vice-captain in just her second season at Carleton. Amanda Ngwafusi, who was tied for the team lead in scoring last year, returns for her fourth year. She has been put to the test as she was asked to take on a new position at midfield. But, she proved she can rise to the challenge and may see more of that role this season.
Brianna De Souza also returns after a summer of international call-ups with the Guyanese national team in its attempt to qualify for the World Cup. Despite a solid core of 11 returning players, there will be many new faces on the roster this year. The Ravens have added a versatile athlete in Jennifer Tutton. The Nova Scotia native can play defence or midfield and has a background at the provincial level. She has also been involved with the national U17 and U20 teams. Another first-year athlete who is making a strong case for a starting spot as a forward or midfielder is Samantha Nealon, who comes to Carleton from Ottawa South United. “With a lot of new faces, the aim is to gel and build team unity as soon as possible,” says McNutt. “This year will be exciting as we try to build a new culture and a new era. We have a great mix of returning players, who will provide the backbone of the team, plus a number of opportunities for first years to come in and make their mark early. With a bit of luck and hard work everything should come together for a good season.”

No stranger to the local Ottawa soccer community, Lecot-Hearn played for the Nepean United Spirits and the Gloucester Hornets organizations. She was an All-American Scholar at the University of Massachusetts and Player of the Year in the A10 Conference (NCAA).
Singfield is entering her second season with the women’s soccer program. Her playing experience includes the Canadian National Team (1990-1997), the World Cup Team (Sweden, 1995), the Canada Games Team (Quebec, 1993) and the World University Team (1993).
McNutt, who is the provincial/ regional coach for the Ontario Soccer Association, came to Carleton with 10 years of coaching experience, including a one-year stint in the CIS as an assistant coach with the Memorial Seahawks in the AUS. In addition to Memorial, McNutt has coached the Canmore United Men’s Football Club and was an assistant coach for Liverpool Football Club of the Women’s English Premier League.
Entering his second year with the team, Chiappa is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and a peak performance specialist. He has trained over 2000 individuals including professional athletes, Olympians and national champions in various sports.

The Carleton University Ravens men’s soccer team faced a rebuilding year in 2009-10 with a number of rookies taking the field and injury troubles at the start of the season. But the team played with great commitment and desire and finished the regular season with a 7-5-2 record, good enough for third place in the OUA East. Head coach Sandy Mackie is hoping to build on the Ravens performance at the end of the 2009-10 campaign, as the young team came together to advance to the OUA Final Four and crack the CIS Top 10. The Ravens will see some changes to the coaching staff as assistant coach Kyle McHenry has left the team due to family commitments. Former five-year player and captain with the Ravens, Kwesi Loney, will take on the assistant coaching duties following a two year coaching stint with the Algonquin College men’s program. Another former five-year player, Michael Hoefler, will return as team manager.
'
The coaching staff is optimistic for the upcoming season as two key players are returning from injury - goalkeeper Karl Wasslen and central defender and captain Nicholas Persichino. Also returning this season are 2009 OUA East First Team AllStar Peter Manginas and third-year veteran Sam McHugh. Joey Kewin and Jonni Okai will look to build on the experience of their rookie seasons, in which both finished in the top 10 of the OUA scoring race. Head coach Sandy Mackie says he is confident that training camp has produced players of Carleton quality. “We expect to be back to where the Ravens men’s soccer program rightfully deserves to be, ranked among the top 10 in the CIS and aiming for a spot at nationals,” he says.

Mackie is entering his 18th season at the helm of the men’s soccer program. A graduate of Carleton University, Mackie has coached at the provincial, national and professional levels. He has led the Ravens to six undefeated seasons so far. 2005-06 proved to be one of Mackie’s most successful seasons. He led his team to the OUA Championship where they went on to win gold. He was later named OUA East Division Coach of the Year, OUA “Fox 40” Coach of the Year and CIS Coach of the Year. In 2008-09, Mackie earned his fourth OUA East Coach of the Year award following his team’s second straight divisional title.
Loney is entering his first season as an assistant coach with the men’s soccer program. He was a Ravens student-athlete for five years and captained the team for three. Playing under coach Mackie, Loney attended two national championships, earning a silver medal in his final year of play, while also being selected as a CIS All-Canadian and national tournament all-star. Loney was selected in his final year to represent Canada at the University Games in South Korea.
