In the pages that follow, we have gathered stories connected to the life of the timeless objects that we make. From Ilse Crawford’s reimagination of Hans J. Wegner’s five first masterpieces, to the collaboration between DUX and Carl Hansen & Søn in creation of a bed designed by Børge Mogensen, to the story of the science behind the furniture from Kaare Klint, to EOOS’ vision of comfort in different heights, and stories of all Carl Hansen & Søn’s new furniture and lighting, each is a story about creativity and craftsmanship. This publication is FSC® certified and printed in an environmentally friendly printhouse. The publication is printed on Munken Lynx and is produced in Sweden at one of the cleanest production facilities inthe world using only half of the water that other paper factories use. The water is biologically cleaned and is so pure after the first purification, that it can be used as drinking water. The paper mills are FSC® and PEFCTM certified, and the same goes for the Munken Lynx. The main raw material for paper is wood, which is a renewable resource that takes up and binds CO2 as the forests grow.

Hans J. Wegner x Ilse Crawford

Reimagining the Classics To celebrate Hans J. Wegner’s enduring legacy and more than 70 years of collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn, we have partnered with acclaimed designer Ilse Crawford to develop a new color palette for a limited-edition release of the first chairs he created for us back in 1950. Pairing Wegner’s innate understanding of how a piece of furniture is experienced with Crawford’s inherent sense of the space in which it is placed, these icons of mid 20th century Danish design are reimagined through a contemporary lens. ”I wanted to develop a set of colors that reflect the times we live in. These are not easy, trend-driven or standard decorative colors, but ones that add depth and complexity to any interior,” explains Crawford. The reinterpretation of Wegner’s work alludes to his pioneering spirit and philosophy of constantly improving, refining, pushing and experimenting. The carefully curated palette of translucent, water-based paints were inspired by the expressionist works of Per Kirkeby, one of Denmark’s most significant painters and selected to create a warm and relaxed atmosphere, as well as to allow the natural beauty of the wood grain to shine through each design. Elevating the chairs’ physicality by using a new color scheme with its own cultural history rooted in Nordic abstraction creates an expression that is both timeless and timely.

Ilse Crawford Ilse Crawford is a London-based designer, academic and creative director with a simple mission to put human needs and desires at the centre of all that she does. Studioilse creates environments where humans feel comfortable; public spaces that make people feel at home and homes that are habitable and make sense for the people who live in them. The projects have become benchmarks in their field, including Soho House New York, the first Aesop store in London and Ett Hem hotel in Stockholm. Crawford has more than thirty years at the forefront of the international design world. Prior to Studioilse, she was the founding editor of Elle Decoration UK, launched well-being magazine BARE, and the home division of Donna Karan. In 2014 Crawford was awarded an MBE for services to Interior Design and in 2015 received an Honorary Doctorate from the London College of Communication, University of Arts London. In addition to the Studioilse, Crawford is a leading advocate of systemic wellbeing design having founded and run the Man and Wellbeing department at the Design Academy Eindhoven. She lectures widely and has published three books about her design philosophy.

Hans J. Wegner 1914 – 2007 Hans J. Wegner was part of the spectacular generation that created the first wave of Danish Modern design. “Many foreigners have asked me how we created the Danish style,” Wegner once said. “And I’ve answered that it was a continuous process of purification and of simplification - to cut down to the simplest possible design of four legs, a seat, and a combined back- and armrest.” The core of Wegner’s legacy is his focus on showing the inner soul of furniture pieces through a simple and functional exterior. Wegner began his apprenticeship with Danish master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old. Later, he moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 to 1938.

Among Danish furniture designers, Hans J. Wegner is considered one of the most creative, innovative and prolific. Often referred to as the master of the chair, he designed more than 500 – many of them considered masterpieces.

Wegner’s background as a cabinetmaker gave him a deep understanding of how to integrate exacting joinery techniques with exquisite form. His aesthetic was also based on a deep respect for wood and its characteristics, and a vast curiosity about other natural materials that enabled him to bring an organic, natural softness to formalistic minimalism. Wegner established his own design studio in 1943 and created a series of chairs for Carl Hansen & Søn in 1950, including the Wishbone Chair, which has been in production at Carl Hansen & Søn ever since.

Ole Wanscher, inextricably linked to the characteristic, simple aesthetics, and functionality of the Danish design movement, sought to find the ideal furniture constructions which he then gave a more modern expression.

Ole Wanscher

OW58 T-Chair Ole Wanscher’s deep respect for materials, craftsmanship and function come to the fore on the OW58 T-Chair, relaunched in a loyal tribute to his original design — albeit adjusted in height to provide optimum ergonomics for today’s design enthusiasts who have grown taller since 1958. The chair’s distinctive expression challenges the art of the possible without compromising craftsmanship or comfort. A refined, sculptural object, the OW58 T-Chair’s characteristic T-shaped backrest and beautiful carpentry embody both classic and modern lines to give the chair a light and elegant appearance.

Despite its light expression, the T-Chair has a wide, upholstered seat that provides excellent comfort, making it ideal for dining use.

The result of careful processing and many carpentry hours to achieve smooth transitions in the joints, the chair’s most striking detail is the T-shaped backrest which merges with the tightly placed back legs, giving the chair a three-legged appearance.

Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm

FK10/FK11 Plico Chair A turning point in the work of Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm and a precursor to an international career in furniture design, the award-winning, foldable Plico Chair is a unique example of a simple and honest design that neither compromises on comfort nor aesthetics. Plico means ‘to fold’ in Latin and the adjustable backrest can be completely folded, creating a chair that takes up as little space as possible when not in use. With visible joints, beautiful brass fittings and accomplished craftsmanship, the Plico Chair beautifully highlights what other designers often seek to hide. At first glance, it appears deceptively simple, but closer examination reveals an extremely detailed design. The solid oak frame and the rear legs are gently curved, giving the chair a soft rounding at the back. The armrests are made from saddle leather attached on the rear legs, the back and seat are in canvas, and the cushions are upholstered in stitched linen canvas to provide an elegant expression. The high back version of the chair also has a neck cushion for an extra degree of comfort.

Preben Fabricius & Jørgen Kastholm 1915 – 1969 Preben Fabricius trained as a cabinetmaker in 1952 with Niels Vodder, one of the most prominent cabinetmakers of the time. At the age of 19, Jørgen Kastholm returned to Denmark from years in the US to train as a smith in his father’s company, and soon they both decided to continue their studies at the School of Interior Design. In 1961, Fabricius and Kastholm established their own design studio. Together, they designed furniture in wood, and later also in steel and leather, taking advantage of Jørgen Kastholm’s experience and background as a smith. They drew their inspiration from luminaries of Danish design such as Hans J. Wegner and Arne Jacobsen, but also international names such as Charles and Ray Eames and Mies van der Rohe. The design duo specialized in furniture design and single-family houses, and their designs were characterized by minimalism, sophistication, functionality, quality, and their eye for detail.

Preben Fabricius and Jørgen Kastholm’s designs can be found in museums and design centres around the world, including at MoMA in New York and at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

CASE STUDY - SAFARI CHAIR

Mar Vicens and Ask Anker Aistrup were on the hunt for a property that could serve both as their home and an office space when they came across a former supermarket on the ground floor of a 19th-century apartment block. The creative duo – whose architectural practice, Mar Plus Ask, specialises in clean, contemporary spaces – wanted to create an oasis of calm in Berlin’s vibrant Kreuzberg district. Despite the space’s printed tile decor and small PVC windows, they decided it was an ideal purchase upon discovering a hidden 4-metre-high ceiling. After a complete refurbishment, Glogauer Straße was born – a tranquil space that creates a sense of unity with high ceilings, polished concrete flooring, and softly colored stuccoed walls throughout. Using this monochromatic aesthetic as a base, each room was then given its own identity. “However simple the place is in plan and in form, we sought to create rich, warm, textured spaces that allow the furniture and the framed views of the garden to play a central role” says Aistrup. In the living area, the former windows were replaced with huge paneled oak windows from Denmark while the kitchen features a sculptural concrete island with a terrazzo-like texture that was crafted on-site. In the living room, a few choice pieces of furniture were chosen – including a pair of vintage Safari Chairs by Kaare Klint that Aistrup inherited from his father. Recently updated with new canvas backs, the chairs’ sophisticated craftsmanship and use of natural materials add an elegant texture to the room. As Aistrup explains of their design ethos: “We reduced the noise and clutter to allow materiality to come forward.”

Kaare Klint 90 years

Mix Chair and Propeller Stool in New Hues On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of Kaare Klint’s Mix Chair and Propeller Stool, Carl Hansen & Søn marks this milestone with a limited edition combining Klint’s minimalist and precise design with Kvadrat/Raf Simons’ playful and painterly approach. Kaare Klint designed the Mix Chair and Propeller Stool in 1930. The Mix Chair was designed in collaboration with his student Edvard Kindt-Larsen, hence the name “Mix”, and has been in production ever since. The Propeller Stool, however, was too complex to put into production at the time and the design was left in the drawer until 1962 before the design saw the light of day. Originally, only available in transparently treated solid wood, leather and canvas, both the Mix Chair and Propeller Stool are now – and for the first time ever - available in vibrant, lacquered versions combined with Kvadrat/Raf Simons’ vivid Ria fabric in cool and warm hues.

Kaare Klint 1888 – 1954 Recognized as the father of modern Danish Design, Kaare Klint made a name for himself as a craftsman, visionary designer, and educator. His best-known works include the KK96620 Faaborg Chair (1914) and the KK47000 Safari Chair (1933). As the son of an architect, Kaare Klint was immersed in architecture from an early age, but would become best known for his work in furniture design. As one of the first designers to elevate functionalism and the practical study of design above style and academic tradition, Kaare Klint was a true reformer. Focusing on human scale, proportions, and everyday functionality, Klint created “human furniture” based on studies of the human body. In all of his work, Klint insisted on clear, logical design, clean lines, the best materials, and superb craftsmanship. In 1924, he helped establish the Department of Furniture Design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a professor, he would teach some of the greatest designers of the 20th century, including Hans J. Wegner, Mogens Koch, Arne Jacobsen, and Poul Kjærholm. Inspired by Klint, these designers would go on to shape the Golden Age of Danish Design.

The use of color in the Ria upholstery takes inspiration from Pointillism, the painterly technique through which vibrant fields of color are built up through the application of pure pigment in precise, individual dots.

The Propeller Stool is an exercise in mathematical construction and expresses Klint’s vision of the ideal fold, while the Mix Chair has earned iconic status for its flowing form and its intricate construction based on the culmination of a sophisticated geometric concept.

THE COLLECTORS One designer, three collectors. Recognized as the father of modern Danish design, Kaare Klint designed icons such as the Faaborg Chair and the Safari Chair. In all his work, he insisted on clear, logical design, clean lines, the best materials, and superb craftsmanship. Timeless by nature, his honest designs still resonate with succeeding generations and keep demanding space in modern interiors. We have asked three design collectors about their passion for Danish design and to designate their favorite Klint piece.

Hanni Gohr & Rune Glifbjerg Model & Professional skateboarder and founder of skatepark architecture design company Glifberg – Lykke Kaare Klint equals the combination of craftmanship and impeccable quality. The thought of the many hours that lie in each piece of furniture gives them soul and personality. Knowing that both design and production are made by craftsmen who really worship the craft and methods is always important to us. We both especially love our Addition sofas by Klint. Our apartment is filled with durable materials such as brass, steel, oak and concrete. This creates a universe where materials of contrast meet. Cold and warm, hard and soft. For this reason, our choice of furniture intentionally complements the many contradictions. The beauty of the Addition sofas lies in the warm and soft expression, which is in perfect contrast to the angular and masculine furniture in our living room and ‘classic meets modern’ which was the main inspiration for our home.

Mikael Andersen Owner of Galerie Mikael Andersen I have been collecting Kaare Klint the last 35 years. The designs of Kaare Klint have always meant a lot to me due to the compositions and simplicity. My living rooms are full of Klint furniture. I started to collect before his ’revival’ which is why I have a special relationship to all my Klint furniture. One of my best experiences was 30 years ago. In the basement of Rud Rasmussen’s carpentry, I found an old, 12-people Cuba Mahogny Addition Table from the thirties. It needed a lot of repair but I bought it anyway. The table is made for the small Klint dining chairs, so I was extra thrilled a couple of years later when I found six chairs from the fifties in Niger-leather and with rivets. To collect furniture is much like collecting art. You buy one thing at a time; when an opportunity seizes or when you can afford it. Living with Danish design and modern art have always been important to me, especially in the last 35 years of when I opened my gallery. This was also an opportunity to present modern art in classic surroundings and show it to collectors for them to see how the two elevates each other.

Helle Thygesen Owner of e-boutique Helle Thygesen Art & Antiques All of Kaare Klint’s designs somehow seem necessary. They add beauty and function in equal measure and I like how they often contain a classical element. Whether it be the Red Chair, the Mix Chair or any of his other designs, they are characterized by a refined, restrained elegance and precision that is impossible not to admire. Although, my favorite Klint design, among many, is the Addition Sofa. To me, the Addition Sofa is perfectly proportioned, the backrest has just the perfect height, the legs the perfect lightness and the pleated leather becomes increasingly beautiful as the years go by. My father was an avid collector of this particular design, a passion that must have been passed down to him from his own parents. I recently saw a photo from my grandparents’ modernist villa, probably taken in the sixties, where several Kaare Klint Addition Sofas fill a part of the living room. Most of my Danish furniture designs are heirlooms, which also marks a continuity in my life and establishes a link to former generations in my family. It’s interesting to imagine what my parents or grandparents where thinking when they chose that particular piece of furniture and that they loved it enough to take care of it for so many years and pass it on to the next generation. Living with furniture that you have carefully chosen is a very intimate thing, it makes your home very much yours.

EOOS EOOS, a design collaborative established in Vienna in 1995 by Martin Bergmann (b. 1963), Gernot Bohmann (b. 1968), and Harald Gründl (b. 1967), was founded after the trio graduated from the Venetian University of Applied Arts. Today, the internationally renowned collaborative approaches complex furniture, product and shop design challenges by examining past roots in a contemporary context. Called Poetical Analysis®, EOOS’s unique process focuses on myths, rituals and intuitive expressions, creating connections that extend beyond initial perceptions. EOOS designs for many of the world’s best-known brands. The trio has published books on design, holds over 15 technical patents, and has won over 130 international awards, including a red dot award, a Compasso d’Oro, the German Design Award, an iF Award, and a Wallpaper* Design Award. Carl Hansen & Søn’s collaboration with EOOS evolved from a mutual respect for craftsmanship, quality and design. Their progressive design approach enabled Carl Hansen & Søn to further develop and explore its own design DNA and introduce a new aesthetic to its range.

E300 Embrace Sofa A modular sofa that unites a stringent geometric expression with unparalleled comfort and craftsmanship. Striking the perfect balance between a stringent wooden frame and soft upholstery, the E300 Embrace Sofa brilliantly unites Austrian design studio EOOS’s strong sense of contemporary aesthetics with Carl Hansen & Søn’s quality craftsmanship traditions. The E300 Embrace Sofa was several years in the making. The modular design minimizes the materials used so that the look embodies the design, and the design embodies the look – as minimalistic as it gets, without compromising comfort or function. Comprising ten modules, each of which is combinable in every way imaginable, they can also stand alone, making the sofa exceptionally versatile. The solid wood frame, armrests and tables are stringent in their expression, while flexible in their composition. The upholstery’s piping cord produces fine lines that accentuate the textile or leather seam. A layer of soft feather down on the seat and padded, loose cushions add contrast, providing a pleasant, embracing comfort. The flexible composition of modules allows it to blend into any spatial dimension – from classic and symmetrical to expressive and sculptural, only your imagination sets the limits.

E006/E007 Embrace Bar Stool A strong sense of modern aesthetics and a tradition for quality craftsmanship. Optimal seating comfort meets elegant lightness on the Embrace Bar Stool, designed for Carl Hansen & Søn by renowned Austrian design trio EOOS. Addressing the need to sit on a bar stool for longer periods of time, the flexible and dynamic design encourages movement without compromising comfort. Here, soft, relaxed upholstery interacts with the precise, simple wooden frame, which forms an integral part of the chair’s expression. Designed to fit into the private home, it is especially intended for office environments and restaurants that require comfortable, flexible seating with a focus on communication. The tall, padded backrest lends support to allow ideal seating comfort and the height ensures that you are at eye level even if one person stands and another sits.

Esben Klint 1915 – 1969 Esben Klint was born on June 18, 1915. His father was the world-famous architect, Professor Kaare Klint, who is generally considered the father of modern Danish design and the man behind such iconic pieces of furniture as the Safari Chair and the Faaborg Chair. At the time of Esben Klint’s birth, the family was living in Java, Indonesia, but a few years later they moved back to Copenhagen where Esben Klint grew up.

Esben Klint was born into a family of architects and designers and, throughout his life, he worked as an architect and cabinetmaker, creating his own distinctive style in lighting, furniture and large buildings.

Esben Klint opened his own design studio in 1954, and following Kaare Klint’s death, he took over several of his father’s unfinished works. Esben Klint regarded his work on the completion of Grundtvig’s Church in Copenhagen as one of his greatest achievements – a work that his grandfather P. V. Jensen-Klint had begun in 1921, continued by his father Kaare Klint and completed by Esben Klint, the third generation of the family.

EK61 Opal Pendant Danish architect and cabinetmaker Esben Klint joins Carl Hansen & Søn’s prominent group of designers with the EK61 Opal Pendant. A classic lamp, designed in 1961 but never been in production before, is now launched in mouth-blown opal glass and certified oak. Created by the son of prominent designer Kaare Klint, the understated and elegant pendant, available in three sizes, emits soft, indirect light thanks to its careful combination of classic materials. Originally imagined in pleated plastic, the design was too complicated to produce at the time and remained stored in the family archives until now. The new iteration features a pleated, super-elliptical shape with distinctive top and bottom pieces, evoking traditional Chinese lanterns. The lamp’s materials – mouth-blown opal glass and oak, meticulously turned and honed by hand, give it a classic look, ennobling the original design. Elegantly complementing Carl Hansen & Søn’s existing collection of lighting, the Opal Pendant blends in beautifully above the dining table, in the hall, in the living room or in the bedroom.

Rikke Frost Rikke Frost trained as an industrial designer at The Aarhus School of Architecture. Rikke Frost chose to focus on furniture design, but industrial design has influenced her design process, with production options always forming part of her initial consideration. She chooses materials, shapes and craft methods that can be incorporated in the best possible way into modern production – like at Carl Hansen & Søn’s furniture factory where old craft traditions such as wickerwork with woven paper cord and a high-tech production go hand in hand.

Danish designer Rikke Frost has always been curious about the combination of different craft traditions and types of material, which holds true in the Sideways Sofa – the first collaboration with Carl Hansen & Søn. Here, she blends classic materials such as woven paper cord and wood in a modern and functional design.

Rikke Frost has won and been nominated for several awards, including the Danish Design Award and Bolig Magasinets Design Award. She has also taken part in several exhibitions.

RF200 Petal Lamp A simple, sculptural expression rooted in nature. A complement to Carl Hansen & Søn’s existing collection of classic lighting designs, the RF200 Petal Lamp, designed by Rikke Frost, is distinguished by its ability to create mood lighting. The distinctive composition of wood, metal and ambient light takes its cues from trees and architectural arches and columns: atop the lamp’s trunk-like wooden base rest two vaulted metal reflectors that illuminate upwards and disperse soft, glare-free light downwards through the shades. Allowing the materials to play a leading role in its simple, organic design, the juxtaposition of warm wood and cool metal coupled with uncompromising craftsmanship ensure the RF200 Petal Lamp is both timeless and modern. The lamp’s base and light reflectors can be joined together in a total of nine different combinations, making it possible to tailor its expression to the intended interior.

Børge Mogensen

BM0555 Bed The two family-owned companies, Danish Carl Hansen & Søn and Swedish DUX, jointly created a bed in a simple design based on sketches found in Børge Mogensen’s archives. With its simple design and compelling choice of materials, the BM0555 Bed combines the best of two worlds – DUX’s expertise in sleeping comfort, and Carl Hansen & Søn’s tradition for superb craftsmanship and design. The bed features many of Børge Mogensen’s characteristic details, including the beautiful visible mortise joints which require great precision and meticulous craftsmanship. Børge Mogensen’s focus on creating designs that last for generations is also evident in the bed which has a sturdy frame made of solid oak and rectangular and cylindrical cushions that complete the look with straps in saddle leather. The DUX spring core mattress has been specially developed for the bed and is upholstered in durable light grey DUX textile with exclusive, hand-sewn piping cord.

BM0488S Table Bench The BM0488S Table Bench by Børge Mogensen is a shorter version the BM0488, with the same characteristic woven seat, understated details, and precise craftsmanship. Its more modest dimensions can easily be combined with its predecessor to create one fluid piece of furniture, but it also serves as an independent piece that exudes wellbeing wherever it is placed.

Børge Mogensen 1914 - 1972 In line with the core concepts of Danish Design, Børge Mogensen’s central ambition was to design simple and functional wooden furniture for private and public spaces. Throughout his life, Mogensen swore by the combination of solid wood (particularly oak, pine and beech) and leather, and, as a rule, his work avoids unnecessary adornments. After completing his training as a cabinet maker in 1934, Mogensen studied furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. As a student of Kaare Klint, Mogensen was inspired by Klint’s straightforward approach. And while both men believed a successful design should always radiate calmness and functionalism, Mogensen’s work placed considerable emphasis on furniture for informal interior spaces. Later in life, Børge Mogensen taught design at the Royal Academy and participated in the annual Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild furniture exhibitions. Just before his death in 1972, Mogensen was appointed Honorary Royal Designer for Industry at the Royal Society of Arts in London.

A MORE SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO DESIGN

At Carl Hansen & Søn, we believe that one of the best strategies for sustainable living is to make and buy things that endure. We use our craftsmanship expertise and the finest materials to create pieces that last a lifetime. Our hope is that they will not only be enjoyed by their owner, but they will be passed down and cherished by future generations, too. The heart and soul of the business is the factory in Gelsted, on the Danish island of Funen. Inside the Carl Hansen & Søn production facility, you can witness craftsmen and women using age-old techniques alongside machines that utilize the most advanced available technology. While our new machines add valuable precision to the process, our production remains heavily centered around traditional methods, with skilled carpenters assembling and polishing each piece by hand. We currently use nearly every bit of wood we source – and the remaining scraps are repurposed as fuel in a district heating plant that provides warmth to more than 400 local homes in Gelsted, Denmark. Following the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, we have set a number of ambitious targets. By 2025, we have vowed to use only environmentally-certified wood, which would see the manufacture of 350 of our designs in FSC-certified wood. In addition, all of our furniture textiles will be environmentally certified, our leather supplied by fully transparent and sustainable tanneries, and our packaging 100% sustainable. Our commitment extends to education, with an apprenticeship program that trains 15 talented young people on in-house repair and refurbishment services. This ensures that even the most well-loved furniture can be restored and made ready for many more years of enjoyment. We also help to support the lifespan of our pieces with detailed maintenance guides that offer advice on general care and treatment. Ultimately, we are striving to leave nothing behind. Nothing, that is, but our beautiful furniture and the rich legacy of craftsmanship that created it.

MATERIALS MATTER Every piece from Carl Hansen & Søn tells a story that starts with its materials. Because our furniture is built to last a lifetime, it’s vital that we select the finest materials from carefully vetted suppliers who share our values. Over time, we have cultivated long-standing relationships with these suppliers that are built upon a mutual respect for natural materials and a deep commitment to quality. There are many elements to consider when it comes to materials, from important practicalities like strength, durability, and tactility, to more abstract qualities like beauty and the emotional response that the material evokes. Our focus on natural materials ensures that our pieces not only endure, but they provide a profound sense of comfort. Wood is our great passion. Along with the classic Scandinavian varieties such as oak, beech and ash, we also incorporate fine cherry, walnut, maple, mahogany and teak into our production. Since 2017, Carl Hansen & Søn has been a proud manufacturer of FSC-certified furniture. Up to 90% of the wood we use in our products is FSC-certified, and the remainder derives from non-certified sustainable forestry.

Today, we have more than 75 design icons available in FSC-certified wood. We are continually working to include more, with newly launched Carl Hansen & Søn designs always crafted in FSC-certified wood. By sourcing this wood, we ensure that forests are responsibly harvested, their wildlife is protected, and that people are fairly treated.
