Sveinn Þorri Davíðsson’s name is impossible to pronounce, so please call me Svenni. Svenn was born and raised in a very small town called Akureyri in the north-east side of Iceland. He moved to Reykjavik in 2005 to study graphic design at the Iceland Academy of the Arts — finished my B.A. degree in 2008. He now currently lives and works in Berlin, and currently has work featured in IDN, PrintMag and YouWorkForThem. The featured typeface for January is Russibani. Russibani is the icelandic word for roller-coaster. Each letter is made from one continuous line (like a roller-coaster,) with some exceptions. This project was also made in collaboration with Siggi Eggertsson.

Month May Designer/Studio Siggi Eggertsson Location Berlin, Germany Links siggieggertsson.com

Siggi Eggertsson first showed interested in Graphic Design at the age of 14 when he became involved in local design programs creating posters for jazz concerts and art exhibitions. When he turned 18, his vision started to expand beyond his remote home, so he applied to the Iceland Academy of Arts in Reykjavik to study Graphic Design. During his first year he met the typographer Atli Hilmarsson and they began working together on design briefs. Here Siggi Eggertsson developed not only as a typographer and designer but also, increasingly, as an Illustrator and image maker in his own right. In 2005 he moved to New York to work at the Karlssonwilker design studio followed by a move to Berlin to study in the Kunsthochschule Berlin-Weissensee. Early in 2007 Siggi moved to London to become part of the Big Active family and contribute to publications like Dazed and Confused, The New York Times and Arkitip plus commercial work with H&M, Stussy and various music projects. Siggi has a unique and complete visual identity; his approach to work takes in his design background, which results in work of hidden depth and sense of purpose.

Month June Designer/Studio Alex Trochut Location Barcelona, Spain Links alextrochut.com

Alex Trochut appears to be able to do anything. In a world where specificity, and uber-division of labor is not only the norm, but a growing pattern, we decreasingly find craftsmen and artists who can execute a wide array of design approaches. Aesthetically, his graphics and illustrations run the gamut from acid-dream liquid movements, to angular, symmetrically based work. In either case, proportion and space condone the art, and yield a poignancy that requires a closer look. His versatility has opened doors to various projects, and inspires an evolutionary attitude toward his craft, his very own, “more is more” approach.

Month August Designer/Studio Áron Jancsó Location Budapest, Hungary Links aronjancso.com

Áron Jancsó is a freelance graphic designer from Hungary and self-confessed type addict with a focussing practice in typeface, identity and poster design.. Building from scratch is how I like to work, sometimes even designing every single letter of a poster. He prefers prefer shapes and structures instead of effects. His style blends modernism, street culture and callygraphy, but it is also very experimental. The font created for August Ogaki is very particluar of his working style. The balance that happens between the solid, bold figures alongside the sing-songy lyricism of the more expressive typography.
