Forget me not our culture and traditions As Chinese New Year is approaching, have you started to implement your new year resolutions for 2019? Flipping through Chung Wah Magazine’s first issue for 2019, gives you a peek of the 2019 Chinese New Year community events in Perth, the 2019 Zodiac Forecast, as well as a New Year guide to health and happiness. Chinese New Year is the most anticipated festival for the elderly and children of every Chinese family. The celebration has always been filled with feasts, traditions and happiness. Family reunion is vital in this festival; every family member will try their best to get together in a harmonious way. In this issue of Chung Wah Magazine, we specially requested a registered educational psychologist, Poh Gan, to write an article to share her knowledge of how to remove the barriers of Inter-generational relationship. As a Chinese living in Western Australia, we celebrated Christmas and New Year with a festive holiday mood. How could we not give ourselves and our children a spectacular and memorable Chinese New Year celebration during this most important traditional festival? Abiding by the same commitment as the previous committees of Chung Wah Association over the last century, we endeavour to organise Chinese New Year community events for the Chinese community in Perth, as well as to continuously increase its prominence in the local communities. No exception for 2019, we are organising another large scale Chinese New Year event. Look forward to seeing you at the 2019 Perth Chinese New Year Fair on 10 February 2019 in Northbridge. Wishing all our readers a safe, happy and prosperous 2019!

CHUNG WAH BILINGUAL QUARTERLY MAGAZINE

Dear Chung Wah Members, In this Year of the Pig, on behalf of the Executive Committee ((EXCO), I wish our Chung Wah members and families, as well as all our friends and supporters of Chung Wah Association, Happy Chinese New Year. The annual Perth Chinese New Year Fair, hosted by Chung Wah Association, will be held on 10 February 2019 on James Street and Lake Street in Northbridge. This is a large-scale event in Perth that promotes the Chinese New Year festival and its culture, showcasing a variety of food and games, art and craft, cultural performances, multicultural parade, culminating in an evening Multicultural concert. Lion and dragon dances are also a major highlight of the day. As in previous years, the City of Perth, Office of Multicultural Interests Western Australia and Lotterywest have been strongly supporting this event. We look forward to welcoming the Year of the Pig with a series of vibrant and spectacular Lunar New Year celebrations and cultural events. With the high level of dedication and strong sense of responsibility, the Chung Wah Community & Aged Care (CAC) has consistently provided high quality and holistic services to more than 700 elderly residents in the community. In addition, we also continuously improve our scope of services to meet the changes in community needs. This reflects the traditional virtues of the Chinese to respect and look after the elderly. This effort has been highly regarded by the elderly, the community and the government. The three Chung Wah Chinese schools work hand in hand to grow the Chinese education of the Association, ensuring that the operations of the schools are in order, stable and efficient. Currently, the three schools are providing high quality Chinese and cultural education

for over a thousand students. With the continuous effort of the Chung Wah Chinese School Management Committee and its chairperson, Sheila Rejek, the fourth campus of Chung Wah Chinese school at Perth Modern School will be starting in February this year. Presented with the opportunities and challenges brought by the rapid growth of overseas Chinese education, we have been consistently providing a high quality Mandarin teaching standard and trying our best to introduce a variety of cultural activities that relate to music, art, dance, chess and physical development. We believe that by making the Chinese school more multi-dimensional and dynamic will enhance its overall performance and create a better learning environment for our students. In terms of the development of the operations of the Association, we were successfully granted special funds from Lotterywest, of which $24,867 will be used to replace outdated computer systems, hardware and network server, install TV monitoring systems and replace outdoor lighting, in order to improve the security of the Association. In addition, $34,125 will also be spent to repair the ceiling, lighting and airconditioning system of the Chung Wah Balcatta Cultural Centre. The Chung Wah Association is the first ethnic minority organisation with the longest history in Perth. It is the home to all Chinese in Western Australia. We will continue to build and develop the Association to a new level in 2019, while adhering to the Chung Wah Constitution and retaining the heritage of the Association. I hope you will all join us in the coming year to further develop the association that we all call home.

A yearly concert and diploma graduation to celebrate the achievements of students who have taken ABRSM graded music exams and who were awarded distinctions, took place at the Mount Pleasant College Auditorium in Booragoon last November 2018. Over thirty young musicians performed at the High Scorers’ Concert which was attended by the public, parents, teachers, the local representative and the visiting UK examiners, Robert Pell (Guildhall) and Judith Clare. High Scorers’ Concerts (HSCs) were launched in 1989, ABRSM’s centenary year, to enable candidates to demonstrate the results of their hard work to a wider audience than just the examiner. Candidates also gain valuable experience of performing in front of a supportive audience.

What Chinese New Year is about?

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the “Year”. The “Year” looks like an ox with a lion head and inhabits in the sea. At the night of New Year’s Eve, the “Year” will come out to harm people, animals and properties. Later, people found out that the “Year” fears the red colour, fire and loud noises. Therefore, for self-protection, people formed the habit of posting red “Dui Lian” in front of their houses as well as launching fireworks and hanging lanterns at year end.

Miniature Dragon Boat model donated to Chung Wah Association

On 4th December 2018, Robert and Hazel Smoothy from the Swan Fremantle Dragon Boat Club (SFDBC) donated a miniature dragon boat model to Chung Wah Association for public viewing. This miniature has a strong historical value. It was presented to SFDBC in 1984 by Charles Thirlwell, a well-known figure in Hong Kong back in the 1980s.

SFDBC is the oldest dragon boat club in Australia. It was the first club that was invited by the Hong Kong Tourism Board to take part in the International Dragon Boat Racing Festival in the beginning of the 1980s. Since then, the club has had the honour and privilege of racing in places such as Hong Kong, Macau, Thailand, Penang and Taipei by invitation. The club is also the pioneer in building the first aluminium dragon boat in the world.

When Marriage meets Cultural Differences

A

Australia is known for its high divorce rate. It is good news to see that the rate is on the decline in recent years. Between 1995 and 2015, the divorce rate fell from 2.8 to 2.0 divorces granted per 1000 Australian residents, according to the figures released in November 2016. In addition, the so-called “seven-year itch”, or more precisely for Australia, the 7.4-year itch, which was the number of years between marriage and separation in 1987 – has become an 8.5-year itch.

ustralia is truly a melting pot of multiculturalism, with more than 300 languages spoken by populations of more than 300 different ancestries, and also over 100 religions being practised in this country. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2016, about 30 per cent of registered marriages were of partners born in different countries, compared with 18 per cent in 2006.

An example is my friend’s marriage, the husband comes from a Malay background, whilst the wife is Cambodian by origin, both of them were raised in Australia and got married at an early age. When I met them two months before their divorce, their marriage seemed stable. In just a few months, both of them had started a new relationship, which was posted on their respective Facebook pages. In fact, it is not uncommon in Australian society for this sort of marriage changes in a relatively short period. Five years ago, I took a short course conducted by Relationship Australia, and a questionnaire on 50 questions was disseminated to students. These questions are excerpted from a book “The Five Love Languages”, written by Dr Gary Chapman, a famous marriage counselling expert in the United States. Dr Chapman believes that it is just like people speaking different languages for communication, there are also different languages to encode and decode love. Basically, these love languages can be categorised into five: Words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gift, act of service and physical touch. The major love language of individuals is established at a young age and developed as they grow, just like our native language. One of the keys to a successful marriage is to understand the love language of yourself and your partner, and to be willing to make appropriate adjustment and compromise.

2 cups self-raising flour 1 cup sugar 1 can coconut milk Pandan paste

• • • •

Method 做法:

1. Mix all ingredients, beat the mixture together until smooth 2. Pour the batter into paper cup till ¾ full 3. Steam in boiling water for 15 minutes 1.

Pandan, sometimes called the “vanilla of the East” due to its distinct sweet flavour, it has been a mainstay in kitchens from India, Malaysia and Vietnam to Sri Lanka and Thailand for centuries. Researchers at Malaysian universities have praised pandan for its potential disease-fighting antioxidants that may slow the development of serious diseases, such as heart disease. Researchers found frozen-dried powdered pandan leaves had higher levels of antioxidants than fresh pandan leaves. Researchers at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok say pandan leaves are used in traditional medicine to help manage diabetes.

PARENTING 亲子乐

How do we foster intergenerational understanding?

S

pending time with grand parents can be mutually beneficial and satisfying for both generations. Research has shown positive benefits for grandparents to have regular contact or being involved in their grandchildren’s lives. Some say that caretaking for grandchildren may even reduce the chances of grandparents having dementia! It also gives grandparents a deep sense of meaning and purpose in their later life, having the opportunities to share their life stories and experiences, and passing on life’s wisdom, culture, heritage practices, traditions and language of their country of origin to their grandchildren. However, caretaking for grand children also comes with its challenges, especially in a Western culture where acculturation gap between the old and young generations becomes bigger. For example, grandparents with limited English proficiency may have communication difficulties with the younger generation. Older grandparents have a tendency to adopt more power-assertive and restrictive approaches when it comes to parenting. Grandchildren who were born and raised in the Western culture may have a different view on the expression of affection, emphasis on academic achievement, respect of the authority, spending pattern or even the appropriate age to start dating, compared to their grandparents.

24

As the middle generation and parents of our children, we have important roles to maintain the family ties and uphold the family values of filial piety. If we are able to adapt to the changing family dynamics and support both the older and younger generations to bridge the acculturation gap, we will be able to maintain the harmonious relationship within the extended family and their well-being. Here are a few tips to share:

1

Children learn through social modelling. Monkey see, monkey do. Never correct your parents or lose temper or raise your voice with them in front of your children. Model respectful communication and show care to our folks and other elderly. It is understandable that there might be differences and conflicts with the way we parent our children, so remaining calm and resolving conflict in a constructive manner will help to prevent holding grudges toward our parents or in-laws. Children learn how we treat our parents and as we get older, they will treat us the same way as we treat our parents. If you notice negative interaction patterns being passed on in the intergenerational manner, take charge by proactively seeking professional help. Personal therapy may help to promote better self-awareness in interpersonal relationships.

2

Support our children to learn about Chinese culture and language and maintain the cultural heritage. Knowing our cultural roots helps our children to establish a solid cultural identity, yet it also enables them to assimilate and acculturate into mainstream culture. Sharing family stories helps children to interpret and understand grandparents’ perspectives and their wisdom, while emphasising the strengths and resilience of grandparents. They will grow to appreciate the cultural roots and heritage more. My children love Ninjas and Kungfu Panda and we use these characters to tell tales and teach different values associated with Chinese culture in ‘bite-size’ doses.

| Chung Wah Quarterly Bilingual Magazine Summer Issue

3

Support grandparents to learn some plain English, information technology and a better understanding of Australian/Western culture. Research shows that grandparents who can bond and maintain emotional connections with their grandchildren by spending quality time with them, learning the grandchildren’s language and adjusting cultural expectations through a better understanding of mainstream culture, tend to have better well-being and relationships. Encouraging grandchildren to share and teach their grandparents how to use smartphones to do FaceTime, play games or use social media is a great way of bonding.

4

Create opportunities for quality time and bonding. It’s not just about caretaking in daily lives. In fact, too much pressure and conflict may lead to role strain in grandparents, making it difficult for them to enjoy their time with the grandchildren. Create opportunities for uninterrupted quality time, e.g. outing with families, regular family reunion dinners, anniversary and birthdays are all great ways of getting families, young and old, together to enjoy each other’s company.

5

Cultivate a sense of appreciation and gratitude. Start from young, teaching children to appreciate grandparents’ hard work, sacrifice and what they have done to raise us and now to support the caretaking of the next generation, is indeed an important lesson to pass on to the next generation, so that they don’t take things for granted.

GOOD HEALTH

Your New Year Guide to Health and Happiness 文◎Elvie Yap 叶俐廷

T

he greatest machine you will ever own is your body. It lasts for a lifetime. Look after your special machine carefully, it is so precious. At the beginning of 2019, healthcare journalist, Elvie Yap, shares her findings on some easy ways to stay fit and fabulous all year long. Eating Home-cooked Meals

Eating out may increase the exposure to phthalates, the chemicals which are used to increase the flexibility and durability of plastic, and which have been linked in recent years to asthma, type-2 diabetes and fertility issues. A study found that those who had eaten out the previous day ‒ 61 percent of the group ‒ had phthalate levels that were almost 35 percent higher than those who stayed at home.

Cut Down on Inflammation Culprits

From heart disease to diabetes, autoimmune diseases, skin disorders like psoriasis, joint pains, bowel disorders, weight gain, and migraines, inflammation is the cause of many of those symptoms. Certain foods, such as sugar, trans-fats, processed foods, gluten, saturated fats, refined carbohydrates, dairy and casein, alcohol and artificial ingredients, are known to trigger inflammation.

Go Slow in Eating

Researchers at Japan’s Kyushu University found slow eaters were 42 percent less likely to be overweight than fast eaters. It is all to do with signals to the brain ‒ studies show it takes up to 20 minutes for us to register we are full, so people who overeat tend to eat too quickly. It is suggested that hard foods, such as meats and vegetables, should be chewed 20 to 30 times, while soft fruits can be chewed around five to 10 times.

Fasting ‒ A Spring Clean for Cells

Our body is made up of trillions and trillions of tiny parts called cells. Japanese cellular biologist, Dr Yoshinori Ohsumi, has studied how damaged molecules and deposits in the cells are quickly killed off and recycled by invisible “cleansing troops”. Ohsumi’s research has won him the 2016 Nobel Prize in Medicine. He says there is one thing that seems to aid the body’s detoxification system more than anything else — intermittent fasting, e.g. leaving at least a five-hour gap between meals boosts glucagon, a substance that helps to lower insulin levels.

Exercise is key

One risk factor for heart disease is inactivity. Recent research from the Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute has found there is a “sweet spot” in mid-life when regular exercise can reverse some of the damage to the heart caused by years of sitting down and being inactive. The “sweet spot” for repairing the damage is between 45 ‒ 64 years old. The research found that you need to do moderate activity and high intensity exercise. It is recommended that you exercise for four to five days a week, every week. It is important to check with your doctor.

Reduce your Financial Stress

Money worries cause stress and take a toll on our health. Extreme financial stress makes you 13 times more likely to have a heart attack, therefore it is paramount to keep our finances healthy. We may kick-start our savings by questioning every purchase, and always ask yourself “do I really need it?” Follow the 30-day rule where you diarise what you want to splurge on. By the time the 30 days are up, you may find you no longer need it.

Stretching out of still positions

A remedial massage and postural expert, Jennifer Spies, says stretching is important to keep joints and muscles lengthened and lithe. Stretching your body can also boost blood circulation, increase flexibility, improve posture, prevent lower back pain and relieve stress. Good posture not only helps you look taller and slimmer, it also improves everything from your breathing to digestion.

Try a new vegetable

SNACK ON FRUIT

Eating two pieces of fruit every day slashes heart attack and stroke risk by up to 40 percent, as found in a seven-year study of half a million people by Oxford University. For example, cut an apple into 6 slices and lightly spread each one with peanut butter. It won’t break the calorie bank and it packs a sufficient fat and fibre punch to keep the mid-afternoon munchies at bay. Mix a small avocado with 2 tbsp cottage cheese and chives for a snack that is high in protein and healthy fat.

Be smarter than your smartphone

Smartphones are nowadays an integral part of modern telecommunications in every individual’s life. Smartphone emit something called blue light, which is a type of light that the brain interprets as daylight. The blue light actually suppresses melatonin (the hormone that regulates the human body’s sleep-wake cycle). It is recommended that you avoid placing your smartphone in the bedroom at night. Don’t forget to clean your smartphone regularly with anti-bacterial wipes. In tests, one in six tested positive for the potentially deadly bug E. coli.

Eating a wide variety of fruit and vegetable offers greater cancer protection than eating a large volume of only a few vegetables day in, day out. All greens are good for you, but kale has a slight edge over its leafy counterparts because it contains high levels of some key nutrients, like calcium and iron.

Take a two-minute walk every hour

A study of 3000 people found this lowered the risk of premature death by 33 per cent. According to US research comparing the two groups, walking is just as effective as running for fighting diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Older people over the age of 65 who used the most energy walking reduced their risk of developing dementia by 27 percent. It is believed that increased blood flow caused by exercise helps to nourish the brain.

GOOD HEALTH
