Necessary shift for a positive outcome Often, we can’t change the big things that are happening in our life but it’s worth remembering that there’s a lot we can do about the little ones. We can’t make a huge difference on big things like the COVID-19 pandemic and global environmental issues, but we can follow all the health measures, assist the vulnerable groups to access essential items and services, and minimise the waste of resources, etc.

Due to COVID-19, numerous print publications have massively reduced their printed copies. Like many publishers in the market focusing on e-publishing, Chung Wah Association have decide not to publish the Chung Wah Magazine in print, starting from this issue. Instead we are using all accessible digital platforms. We understand some members may have difficulty using electronic devices, so feel free to contact our office at 9328 8657 for further arrangements.

For the last three months, we have learned to adapt to a new lifestyle: keeping physical distancing, working from home and staying connected electronically. In this Chung Wah Magazine Issue 43, we reviewed the important events of COVID-19 and the responses of the Western Australia government, and how COVID-19 impacted the operations of Chung Wah Chinese schools in delivering Mandarin lessons. In addition, we also invited WA Police, Small Business Development Corporation and health professionals to contribute their professional advice on dealing with specific circumstances. It was amazing to see the power of love from the local Chinese community in Perth, working together with Chung Wah Association, collecting 30,000 face masks and then distributing to people and organisations in need in both the mainstream and ethnic communities. Chung Wah Association is the first ethnic minority organisation with the longest history in Perth. 2020 is the year that we celebrate the 110th Anniversary of the Founding of Chung Wah Association. I hope you will all join us to be part of this celebration in the second half of the year. In a year when the COVID-19 pandemic brought the world to a standstill, 2020 is definitely the time for individuals, families, communities and businesses to reflect and make a necessary shift - in what we do, see and surround ourselves, this will help us to step towards a more positive state.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

2

Dear members, Love is all around despite the pandemic. This year is the 110th anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Association, however, starting from February, the Chinese food and beverage businesses were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The WA population was living in a tense situation, and all businesses and industries faced new challenges. In April, Chung Wah Association, together with a few community leaders, collected 30,000 donated face masks within a relatively short period of time. These collected face masks were distributed to vulnerable individuals and organisations looking after the disadvantaged in the local and ethnic communities.

For the last few months, the local Chinese community has been actively battling the pandemic, helping each other and totally fulfilling their social responsibility. This community spirit is highly commended. We are grateful to see the State Government and Senators from the Federal Government openly praising the contributions and dedication of the Chinese community during this pandemic. Although we witnessed some narrow-minded individuals using the excuse of COVID-19 “originating” from China to discriminate some members of our community in different ways, we strongly believe that righteousness will never be defeated. During this difficult time, Chung Wah has actively communicated racial discrimination issues with the WA Office of Multicultural Interests, Senators of the Federal Government, the WA Police and the Race Discrimination Commissioner for the Australian Human Rights Commission. We appreciate that these representatives have strongly condemned all forms of racial discrimination behaviour. We also strongly encourage any victims of racial discrimination incidents to share your story and feelings with us or the WA Police.

Time flies, like many others in this global village, the first half of 2020 has passed under the stress of this pandemic. However, we are fortunate that under the strong and smart leadership of the State Government, many restrictions have been lifted earlier than what was expected. This means we can enjoy many local activities that we normally participated in before the pandemic. In the second half of the year, we are hoping to carry out a series of celebratory events and activities for the 110th Anniversary of the Founding of Chung Wah Association as we had planned. Chung Wah Association will continue to honour our vision of “Through promoting Harmony, preserving our Heritage and practising Humanity“, we serve as the bridge between the Chinese community and the mainstream society; we will continue to work on our aged care services, the promotion of Chinese language, culture and education, and to provide quality services to members and the community. Chung Wah Association is an organisation that belongs to all people of Chinese heritage and members of the Chinese community. We look forward to our members’ active participation and contributions towards building and developing the Association further.

In early April 2020, after noticing the concerns in the community of protective mask shortages, the President of Chung Wah Association, Dr Ting Chen, together with several Chinese community leaders, initiated a campaign to distribute free protective masks to the vulnerable groups and communities in need.

Within a month, Chung Wah collected a total of 36,000 masks, generously donated by over twelve community organisations and local Chinese community groups. Approximately twenty volunteers personally distributed these masks to over five hundred elderly residents aged 70 years old and above, pregnant ladies and people with low immunity, as well as ethnic community groups, such as the Bhutanese,

ince the outbreak of the new coronavirus, Chinese communities in Western Australia have made concerted efforts to actively distribute complimentary protective masks to help prevent and control the spread of the virus.

Mr Chen Wei Ng, Director, Ingot Hotel Perth

“ We rate the WA Government’s response to COVID-19 very highly. Throughout the pandemic, we have seen clear and strong leadership from both the Premier and the Minister for Health. WA is in a very enviable position in terms of caseload, the extent of restrictions and our ability to come back on line quickly. Much of the credit must go to the WA Government in the decisive measures taken early on, and also bringing the WA public along for everyone to understand the risks and the need for the actions taken.”

1. There have obviously been a number of important actions taken by the Federal and WA Governments, including border closure, quarantine requirements and public health responses. The hard border closure in WA has no doubt been one of the stronger measures to keep infection rates down. We also appreciated the speed with which the WA Government had ramped up the public health capacity from expanding testing capabilities to increasing ICU beds.

2. As with all businesses in the hospitality industry, we have been severely impacted by the pandemic. Our Food and Beverage has been limited to only room service and some takeaways, while the border closure and movement restrictions have resulted in much reduced room occupancy. However, it is only because of these actions that our essential mining industry has been able to keep going. 3. During this time, the various government support packages have been invaluable. The most significant being JobKeeper, which means that we have been able to retain all staff. As we emerge from this crisis though, we hope that the reliance on government support can lessen. We are businesses after all, looking to stand on our own two feet, and the best thing is for the economy to be re-opened and for everyone to get back to work once the public health risks are contained.

Mike Tan, Director and coach, Perth Badminton Arena 1. Their early decision of hard border closure for international and interstate travel.

“I would rate the WA Government as very efficient on decision making and responsive, compared to the other interstate governments.”

2. It has significantly affected our business. As an indoor sports centre, we are not allowed to use any of our facilities, which means zero income for the period of restriction. At the same time, we need to keep paying outgoings for the warehouse. For some other industries, such as the restaurants and cafes, they are still able to generate income through takeaway and delivery services.

3. It is not beneficial for our industry as an indoor sports centre, as mainly the incentives are more beneficial towards the hospitality industry. The government should ensure their incentives are distributed to all industries effectively. Maybe they could divide the budget into more specific distribution to each different state to accommodate each industry’s needs.

1. I deeply appreciate all the WA Government’s approaches. They’re based on evidence and expert advice. News are up to date from reliable sources and instructions are comprehensive. Not to mention they have been translated to multilanguages. Most of all, I really admire the WA Government’s fast response to this pandemic. Racing against time to make decisions is incredibly difficult for anyone or government. Undoubtedly, the WA Government is very decisive! 2. I do understand all the information being circulated about COVID-19.

3. All areas/aspects of the restrictions are very clearly explained based on current situations with reasonable analysis. I can see they’re also trying to be consistent with the Federal Government in many areas in order to minimise confusion. 4. Our family is quite lucky, we haven’t been affected seriously by COVID-19 so far. However, COVID-19 is a lifethreatening virus which means no one is safe until a vaccine comes out. At the same time, I also feel lucky to live in Australia. Our top-grade medical science capacity has saved so many lives this time. The crowds in supermarkets on weekends are kind of terrifying. Well, I can choose not going. Wish people can be more concerned about the social distancing rules, it’s still too soon to be content.

5. We postponed a few doctor’s appointments. Fortunately, they’re all not urgent. We’re a small family, there’re not many difficulties in accessing any resources so far. 6. No particular areas that I need assistance in.

1. Appreciate that the government initiated the lockdown early enough to prevent a surge in cases and allow the flexibility of home schooling. This allowed time for the hospitals to take appropriate steps to prepare for the wave. However, I am not happy that wearing a mask is not compulsory and the decision not giving parents the option to home school from May 18. This should be kept flexible as we are still living in uncertainty and in anticipation of a second wave. 2. Understand all the information being circulated about COVID-19. 3. Understand all the aspects of restrictions. 4. Financial strain to our economy.

5. Initially online shopping was an issue but it has resumed and returned to almost normal capacity.

6. Employees should have the flexibility to work from home as an ongoing process of social distancing. The culture of working from home remains a foreign concept, especially in the public sector.

From cases seen overseas and the eastern states, the WA Government has done an impeccable job and responded timely and decisively.

8 out of 10. 1. Immediate lockdown. 2. Yes, understand all the information being circulated about COVID-19. 3. I wonder why wearing a mask is not encouraged. Wearing a mask can prevent asymptomatic carriers, they are contagious too. 4. Money and employment are my main concern. 5. No difficulty accessing services/supplies. 6. My husband’s working hours have been cut by 50 hours per month and his company is not entitled for JobKeeper. I wonder whether his company can legally do so. 10分有8分

1. The strong stance on hard border closure has proven effective.

2. More clarity on daily reported cases. Given the low numbers of daily cases, if the public could have more information of the link (if any) to previous cases, so that we are aware of the origin or the cluster. On another note, as the general public is aware of the situation, what about proposing that all incoming passengers be made responsible for the cost of the compulsory 14-day quarantine. I understand that some passengers might not be financially able, part of it could be subsidised, at least to ease the pressure on our state budget. 3. The website is gradually including more information, it is a fluid situation and I applaud the effort of the team. 4. Long term effects of the virus on the economy, in turn affecting middle income families.

5. No difficulty accessing services/supplies.

6. No particular areas that I need assistance in.

A Compassionate Community Advocate - Esther Chang Going through the list of Chung Wah’s Life Members, Esther is one of the few female representatives. Later in 2015, she was invited to join the Chung Wah (CW) Council of Elders. care amongst ourselves, which worked well.”

In response to the question of how she overcame difficulties and challenges in her migrant journey, she emphasised that her Christian belief and faith played a big role.

“I have been involved as a physiotherapist in the aged care industry in WA for over forty years, working in both residential and community settings. In 1986, I started conducting an exercise class for our seniors at the CW Hall. My passion is to keep our seniors strong and healthy, enabling them to continue to live at home for as long as possible. This was ignited many years ago and I remain passionate about this, more so now than ever.”

of the scholarship bond requirement to work for the Malaysian Government Health Services along with the White Australia Policy.

Migration Journey to Perth

Esther and Stephen, together with their two children, migrated to Australia in 1975. The racial riots in Malaysia on 13 May 1969 prompted them to consolidate their desire Esther Chang has forged a life-long career to return to the wonderful country where as a physiotherapist after a significant they first met. Esther was born in Ipoh, Malaysia at the end of World War II. She was the eldest of three children. Education was very important to her mother and it was an expectation for all her children to enter university. With strong determination, Esther did not disappoint her mum, and her outstanding academic performance made her one of the Colombo Plan Scholarship recipients in 1964. Esther studied Physiotherapy at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. This was where Esther met her husband, Stephen, who was studying medicine.

After graduation, Esther and Stephen would have continued their stay in Australia, as the lifestyle in this beautiful country appealed to them greatly. However, this was not possible because

Comparing Perth in the early days and now, Esther was grateful to see the significant changes in the Asian community that help ease the stress experienced by migrant families in adapting to a new environment.

“Perth at that time was not as cosmopolitan or diverse or multicultural as it is now. There were very few grocery stores selling oriental goods and only a handful of Asian restaurants. We learnt how to cook a lot of food ourselves as there were no shops selling these items. There was no government assistance with child care in those days and so the working mothers organised child

“Christian faith was and still is a very important part of our lives. Christian teachings and values continue to shape how we live our lives at home and in the community. We believe that God remains very active in our life’s journey and He leads and guides us in all that we do. Therefore, even when things do not work out, we can trust God to provide a better option for us.”

Chung Wah Association

Within less than a year of migrating to Perth, Esther’s family joined as CW members. as she believed it was important for them to maintain their Chinese heritage and culture, while embracing the new way of life in Australia.

“I think the most significant contribution to the Association is my 35 years’ involvement with the growth of the Community and Aged Care (CAC) Group of CW. I have been the Chairperson of the Independent Board of Management of CAC since 2011.”

In 1986, Esther was working for Community Physiotherapy Services, organised by the WA Health Department, to conduct exercise classes for seniors in the metropolitan area. She initiated an exercise class for seniors in the community at the CW heritage hall in Northbridge. It was the same venue where the then CW Welfare Group conducted its activities. This welfare group is now known as Chung Wah Community and Aged Care (CAC), a multimillion-dollar governmentfunded community and aged care service

“CAC provides good quality and culturally appropriate services for people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, especially for nonEnglish speaking migrants. CAC, with Mrs Theresa Kwok as Chief Executive Officer, now has a staff of about 130 and servicing 780-800 consumers on a regular basis. CAC has certainly embraced its vision statement ‘Building a Better Community for All’.” “I would like to see CW continue to be regarded by the Australian Government as an influential leader in the promotion of a multicultural Australian society. By this, I mean CW must continue to take a leadership role amongst all CALD organisations.”

“With our history as the oldest ethnic organisation in WA, we have the responsibility to protect what had been built up for the community through the hard work of our forefathers. However, we must also be prepared to embrace the new and changing world, so that CW can and will remain relevant, especially to the younger generation in the Chinese community. We must have the vision and courage to make all the necessary changes which may include organisation structural changes, improved governance and accountable management.”

Chinese Community

It is understandable that most migrants prioritise their career and family when living in a new country. However, it is important not to take things for granted.

“We were given an opportunity to come to Australia for a better way of life. Therefore, when there arises the opportunity to give back to Australia and the society, we need to look beyond ourselves with a care and concern for the better good of the country and the society. There are many opportunities to serve as volunteers in charities and not-for-profit organisations.” She believes that CW needs people with skills, expertise and funds to help in many ways. As a member of the WA Chinese community, instead of asking ‘What are the benefits of being a CW member?’, perhaps we can all ask ourselves ‘What can we do for the Chung Wah Association?’

hen we were worrying about W how long the earth can last after repeatedly receiving news of

natural disasters which frequently happened due to global warming and glaciers retreating, etc, then came the ‘COVID-19’ pandemic. The global outbreak brings massive movement restrictions to billions of the world population, while industrial, trade, social, transportation and aviation activities have been significantly cut down. This has greatly reduced the global carbon dioxide emissions. During this critical period, no major natural disasters have occurred, and we have repeatedly read news of the proliferation of endangered wild animals, while many aspects of the earth are moving on in the best ways. Western Australia has been labelled as the most isolated place in the world, based on its geographical location on the map, however this drawback has become one of the factors WA is keeping well with the outbreak.

“Hero born in time of crisis”, the efficient and effective, and also a firm but kind emergency response of the McGowan government and his team, has greatly impressed the Western Australian

community. There were no new cases for more than a week after less than two months of battle. Newspoll findings on the Australian state leaders’ handling of the coronavirus, have shown that Premier Mark McGowan enjoyed the highest net approval rating of 83 percent.

Like many school-age parents, I experienced hosting home schooling for the children and spent more than a month locked down at home. I thought it would be difficult for me and my children who love physical socialising. Surprisingly, I really appreciated this precious moment staying home for this purpose, as it enabled me to understand myself and the children better. Changing into a new lifestyle also makes me realise we can enjoy happiness easily without much money or materials. Life is impermanent, it is essential that we spend our short lifespan with people and matters that are worthwhile.

There are too many things happening in the world that are beyond our control. We can only do our best to prevent and protect, however the outcome may not be what we wished. Believing that everything happens for a reason may be a great relief for those in doubt. Perhaps, the best way to live in ease is to believe in fate.

Chung Wah Chinese Schools response to COVID-19

L ike most of the interest classes in Western Australia, the Chung Wah Chinese Schools have suspended all physical classes with relatively short notice, and immediately switched to online teaching. Special thanks to all parents of our Chinese schools for your understanding. Chung Wah Magazine invited the Principals of the four Chung Wah Chinese Schools to write an open letter, explaining the situation. Hopefully, students can return to campus soon, learning the Chinese language and participating in relevant activities face to face.

Letter from the Principal of Chung Wah Chinese School Leeming, Ms Hua Li 22

Unexpected Pandemic, Prepared Response for Lesson Continuity In mid-March 2020, COVID-19, a new type of coronavirus disease began to erupt in Europe and the United States, and Australia was also in a tense status. This was the biggest challenge encountered by mankind since World War II. People from all walks of life were busy with emergency measures, and the education sector was also no exception.

In response to this pandemic, the main focus of Chung Wah Chinese School Leeming was to take immediate response, while ensuring that students can continue learning in a safe way. Since the beginning of the school term, Chung Wah Chinese School Leeming had issued a notice to every parent and teacher through all means of communication channels, ensuring that any teacher or student returning from overseas must quarantine themselves at home for at least two weeks before attending the Chinese school. All teachers with symptoms must not come to the school. The same notice was displayed on the campus and the entrance door of each classroom. In addition, there was a bottle of hand sanitiser in every class for students to clean their hands every time before they enter the classroom and leave the classroom. As the pandemic developed, our teachers were required to attend a brief training session on 14 March 2020 after school hours, gain more knowledge on remote/online classrooms via online teaching platforms such as Google Classroom, Skoolbag and Eduction Perfect. As we received the suspension notice of the school venue management under the supervision of the Department of Education, Chung Wah Association decided on 20 March 2020 to stop physical classroom teaching, starting from 21 March 2020, totally switching to online teaching. Due to this last-minute decision, I called for an emergency micro-group teacher meeting on that night. Everyone worked together and decided to start online teaching the next day. The first online lesson was carried out ten hours after the decision was made.

After finishing the lesson on 21 March 2020 at 11:30am, all the teachers who conducted the online teaching on the day had an evaluation discussion via their WeChat group. Teachers were glad to see that the transition into online teaching was successful. Subsequently, the combined use of Zoom, Google Classroom, Perfect Education Online Teaching Platform, Skoolbag, and Microgroup Lessons, with a diverse form of presentation, together with rich and multi-designed contents, were widely accepted by students and parents. In the following weeks, teachers have continued receiving training in online teaching, making improved teaching materials and enhanced teaching skills. Teachers have been receiving net class training every week and improved teaching every day.

In order to keep up with the online teaching in the 2nd term, all the teachers of the four Chung Wah Chinese Schools participated in the online teaching training, hosted by the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association of WA. Principal Ma from Chung Wah Chinese School Rossmoyne and myself jointly presented an intensive training session in teaching via Zoom. The details included the advantages and disadvantages of online teaching, Zoom online application, online teaching resources, online teaching classroom activities, and preparation before and after class. We are glad to see that every member of our Leeming school was able to successfully deal with the impact of the pandemic in conducting lessons. Wisdom and the ability to convert a crisis into an opportunity are the way members of our Leeming school respond to the crisis.

Chung Wah decided to postpone Term One, starting the school a week later on 15 February 2020 due to COVID-19. Thanks to the support of our School Management Committees (SMC), parents, we were well prepared with bottles of sanitiser around the school to ensure easy access to everyone for handwashing. However, some parents were concerned about COVID-19 and our school attendance rate was reducing to about 50%. We, therefore, decided to switch from traditional classroom lessons to remote learning lessons after six weeks. Thanks for the Morley team’s spirit of enthusiasm. During our meeting, we derived the use of a few options to suit the students and parents; such as Seesaw, OneNote, Education Perfect, as well as via email to set homework and tasks. We also checked on the Microsoft Teams, Zoom, WhatsApp, and WeChat for ‘Check-in’ time for online lessons. Prior to our first remote learning lesson, we called for an online meeting with all the teachers to ensure their wellbeing and be readiness for their online teaching.

Chung Wah Chinese School Morley campus has launched the remote learning lessons with success. We have regained students’ attendance. Although there are parents who are not familiar

with the online system, help is always available to ensure everyone connects to remote learning lessons smoothly. We have also received feedback and photos of students’ online learning from parents. Online classes have continued in Term 2. To gather more feedback on how to improve our online classes, parents, students and teachers were given a short survey. We also upgraded teachers’ online teaching platform (Zoom) to ensure classes run smoothly. Teachers even participated in Professional Development organised by the Chinese Language Teacher Association of Western Australia (CLTAWA) to gain more knowledge in remote/online classroom.

As the Principal of a weekend Chinese school and the Head of language department of a private school, I understand the sudden change of learning mode can be frustrating as it brings inconvenience to some families. Hence, I would like to thank parents, especially those whose children are in a lower year level. Thank you for spending time with your child in online classes and working on the homework assigned. Lastly, I would also like to thank all our students, the SMC team, Morley teaching and non-teaching staff for making the remote learning lessons possible.

Letter from the Principal of Chung Wah Chinese School Morley, Mrs Emily Emery

Wishing you and your family well and safe during this tough time.

Dear students, teachers, parents and guardians,

24

2020 has been a challenging year for all of us, and I know that the first term did not start or end the way any of us had planned. As many of you are aware, our school had postponed the start time for Term 1 due to the COVID-19 outbreak, and made the transition to remote learning and teaching as the COVID-19 crisis continued to evolve. This move was made for the safety of students, staff, their families, and the wider community. There is no doubt that this is a difficult time for all of us, but the strength and support from within our community has been truly commendable. And for that, I would like to thank you all.

Thank you to all our students for continuing to learn at home. It has been amazing to know that they continue to learn despite all the new obstacles that have come with remote learning. Thank you to our parents for your support and understanding throughout this period of uncertainty and change. We know that online teaching would not be possible without your efforts behind the scenes. You are incredible. And thank you to all our teachers. From that Friday when we first received news of campus closure, you have worked tirelessly to learn a whole suite of new online teaching tools. You have prepared new materials, and modified existing plans, to adapt to online education. You have held discussions with colleagues and parents to

collect feedback and ensure you are constantly improving your teaching abilities. In this difficult time, you have shown the utmost professionalism and commitment. Thank you.

On behalf of our school, I would also like to thank Chung Wah Association for their support. President Chen Ting, Senior Vice President Yudy Kodratjaya and Honorary Secretary Jen Nie Chong, have participated in the Chung Wah Chinese School Council meeting to give suggestions for the school’s response during the epidemic. The staff of the Chung Wah Office have also worked hard to help arrange the classroom needs for the WACE class assessments during the campus closure period. Rossmoyne Senior High School (RSHS) have notified us that they will still not allow us to recommence licences for the use of school property. While waiting for further updates from RSHS, our school will keep working hard to develop ways in which we can work together to support our students and our wider community.

There is no doubt that the transition from physical classrooms to online learning under significant unexpected circumstances has impacted the delivery of education. However, in implementing online learning we have gradually discovered a number of advantages unique to online education. Our school is currently collecting more information and doing further research in this regard. We hope this will enable us to continue leveraging the new skills and resources learned via online teaching, even after we return to physical classrooms. In doing this, we hope to use the many challenges presented by COVID-19 as a driving force to advance the school’s use of technology as an educational tool.

The novel coronavirus epidemic has presented many challenges to almost every global citizen. We have all experienced some sort of stress and anxiety during this difficult time. Each of our families is adapting to a very different way of life. Under the critical circumstances, like many other educational institutes, Chung Wah Association Chinese School (Perth Campus) is also applying online teaching strategies.

First, we decided to employ the Zoom app as our communication tool after discussion amongst teachers. In order to familiarise ourselves with Zoom, we organised a professional learning session for all teachers. Most of them also attended a PD day on online teaching of Chinese organised by Chinese Lanuage Teachers Association of Western Australia (CLTAWA). Second, how to maintain children‘s attention and interest in learning is one of the new challenges for our

teachers. As the Principal of the school, I highlighted some points of teaching methods for our teachers, such as speaking clearly and slowly with regard to the level of students’ understanding, making use of children songs and rhymes with actions – “Do what you say, say what you do”. Learning through playing games, etc, in light of online learning activities.

Students feel excited and amazed to see each other on the screen during the online lessons. The magic screen enables us to see each other every Saturday and our teachers are gaining more knowledge and skills for online teaching programs to let everyone have fun with various software teaching resources. Gradually our students are stepping up into the screen with confidence.

Last but not least, we feel very appreciative of our parents and would like to say a big thank you to you, who always provide great support and help to us. Our Chinese culture and language teaching would not be able to go on without your support. We hope all families are safe and healthy! We look forward to returning to our school campus as soon as possible.

5 WAYS TO SUPPORT CHILDREN IN RECOVERING FROM A WORLD HEALTH CRISIS

26

I

n the short space of a few months, our world in 2020 has changed dramatically since the COVID-19 pandemic emerged as a world health crisis. Some of us may still be in self-isolation, learning from home or working from home. Some of us, especially in Western Australia, have started to re-engage in our “new normal” life after the lockdown. Collectively, we have had to adjust and adapt to the ever-changing news updates and new rules of social distancing. As parents, our finances and work may have been impacted. We have had to learn new ways of working and learning differently. As families, we may have had to forego or miss important gatherings, such as birthdays, play dates, graduations and excursions. We may have families, relatives and friends, who are unwell because of the illness. We may be feeling worried and overwhelmed with different demands and feelings. As the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) pointed out, our children are actually more vulnerable to the emotional impact of this pandemic and the disruption it brings to our daily lives. They may worry about their safety and the safety of their loved ones. As we are adjusting and recovering from the lockdown and health crisis, here are five ways you can support your children for better adjustment and to promote their resilience.

Self-care as parents:

It is often overlooked but highly important that we look after ourselves and attend to our needs during this time. This means maintaining certain levels of routine, and making sure you rest and exercise regularly. Take regular breaks from news and social media, so that your mind will not fall into the trap of constant worrying. Have down time to yourself to restore your energy (e.g. mindfulness meditation, reading, hobbies). Check in, communicate and work with your partner to coparent and take turns to have self-care time. The pandemic has brought on many challenges for parents to make

decisions on schooling and the health of their children. Each family is unique. Notice any unhealthy comparisons and judgements. Take them lightly and practise self-compassion. Pause regularly to take deep breaths and check in with yourself. Chronic stress and parenting demands can take its toll on our mental health and result in burnout. If you notice that you find it hard to cope with things and are stressing out, it is okay to seek professional help and informal social support. This is a sign of strength, not weakness, to keep you well. This ensures that you can be a sensitive and responsive caregiver to your children.

Meeting children’s needs:

Children have different needs in order to grow and develop. These include their physical health, social emotional needs, sensory and movement, cognitive stimulation and spiritual needs. Daily routines of learning, play, sleep and mealtimes help to establish a sense of predictability and psychological safety. Quality time with families, such as cooking or movies together, board games or camping in the backyard are helpful ways to support our children.

Create a safe haven by practicing 3 R’s: Regulate, Relate and Reason:

As children try to adjust and adapt, some may feel anxious and stressed. Coming out of lockdown, some may adapt well and be keen to see their friends and teachers. Some may experience heightened levels of anxiety with germs, social situations or separation from caregivers. Some may show their

Chung Wah Quarterly Bilingual Magazine Winter Issue

anxiety through anger, challenging or aggressive behaviour. It is important to validate their feelings and offer ways to support them to co-regulate their emotions. When they feel safe, heard and unstuck from their emotional brain, we can then engage them to make a plan and problem-solve with them.

Social connectedness:

Research showed that social connectedness may protect us from developing trauma during pandemics. Help children to develop a sense of purpose and meaning by supporting others in the community (e.g. writing letters or drawing for the elderly or people who live on their own). You may join an online group with similar interests or promote positive values. With the international travel restrictions, migrant families in Australia may be less likely to travel back to their home countries to visit families and relatives. It is important to be creative and find ways to connect with them through technology. We may support children to feel connected with their grandparents and cousins overseas through videoconferencing or letter-writing!

Emphasise strengths, hope and positivity:

Reassure your children that we have good medical frontline workers and medical systems to keep us safe. Share positive stories of how people come together to support each other and solve problems to overcome the challenges that we face during this pandemic. These stories that emphasise hope, strengths and heroes can be therapeutic and healing for both children and adults.

If your children show an ongoing pattern of emotional or behavioural concerns (e.g. anxiety, sadness, nightmares, aggression, regression, addiction to gaming or selfharm) over a period of time, do not hesitate to seek professional help from your GP or mental health professionals.

Poh Gan

Educational and Developmental Psychologist

GOOD HEALTH

Heart Health Our heart is a powerful organ - it beats 100,000 times in one single day, pumping five litres of blood through our body every minute to supply it with enough oxygen, nutrients, vitamins, minerals and messengers. Yet it is also a sensitive organ, heart disease is the single biggest killer of Australians.

The biggest killer in Australia

32

Prevention better than cure

Exercise and a heart-friendly diet will help keep our heart running as long as possible and maintain its youth.

According to the Causes of Death 2017 report of the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2018, cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases, is a major cause of death in Australia, with 43,477 deaths attributed to CVD in Australia in 2017. Cardiovascular disease kills one Australian every 12 minutes. It is estimated over 400,000 Australians have had a heart attack at some time in their lives.

In 2017, an average of 21 Australians died from a heart attack each day, this is equivalent to one death from a heart attack every 67 minutes. Our lifestyle makes up a whopping 70 percent of its risk factors, while our genes are only 30 percent responsible. A British study has found that four out of five adults have much greater heart damage than expected for their age. Certain factors, such as alcohol, smoking, excess weight and even mental suffering, permanently overload and damage the heart, causing it to age faster than other organs.

Over one million Australians have taken the Heart Foundation’s heart test, and 79 percent have been told their‘heart age’is higher than their biological age. The Heart Age Calculator is available on the Heart Foundation website: https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/ your-heart/know-your-risks/heart-agecalculator

The CEO of Heart Foundation WA, Sarah Fordham, said West Australians ranked the second highest of all the states for cholesterol, which is a leading risk factor for heart disease.

Risk Factors

An important but often underestimated one is a high resting heart rate - if the heart permanently beats more than 90 times a minute, the risk of death triples. And even when this rate is between 81 and 90, the risk is still twice as high as normal. The good news is that a high resting heart rate can be lowered without medication – because like any other muscle in the body, the heart muscle can be trained. Ideally, this means 20 to 30 minutes of moderate exercise, five times a week, which is enough for anyone to lower their resting heart rate by five to 10 beats within six months. Health scientists have described exercise as an insurance policy for the short term and long term protection of your heart. Largely because exercise works to control other heart disease risk factors, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and weight gain.

Caution is also urged in the case of dental inflammations, as 43 percent of people who have heart attacks also have periodontitis. So, whenever a dentist has a patient with chronic dental inflammation, they should always send them to a cardiologist. Other factors, such as alcohol consumption and smoking, are harmful to the heart. Similarly, stress or the hormone it releases (cortisol) contributes to heart disease.

Chung Wah Quarterly Bilingual Magazine Winter Issue

“Regular walking is one of the best choices for Australians to reduce their risk of heart disease and improve mental health and general wellbeing. Walking for an average of 30 minutes a day can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes by up to 40 percent.

Heart Foundation Walking is Australia’ s largest free walking network. It is a social, fun and easy way for people to walk and be active. Go to walking.heartfoundation. org.au to find out more. During this unprecedented lockdown, the Heart Foundation’s Health Strategy Director, Julie Anne Mitchell, said one of the best ways to stay healthy and support your immunity is eating the right mix of foods over the days, weeks and months ahead.

Ms Mitchell encourages Aussies to adopt a heart-healthy eating pattern “by filling their plates with a good mix of veggies, fruits and wholegrains, together with some healthy proteins like fish, legumes or smaller amounts of lean chicken or eggs. If you’re choosing red meat, make it lean and have less than 350 grams a week.”

GOOD HEALTH

ccording to the chart below, four out of the ten most common medicines dispensed in pharmacies are related to heart disease. In fact, heart disease is the leading single cause of disease burden and death in Australia. While the Australian death toll from COVID-19 related illness stands at 89, as of the end of April 2020, almost 50 people died from heart disease every day and 170 people experience an acute coronary event (heart attack or unstable angina) every day in Australia. Ten most common medicines, by number of PBS prescriptions dispensed, 2016-17 2016-17年按PBS处方数量划分的十种最常用药物

3.采取行动 Source: Department of Health 2017; Table S7.6.4.

Hence, it is important to keep our heart healthy with the following four steps.

1. Understanding your heart

If we are aged 35 – 75, we can use the Heart Foundation’s Heart Age Calculator to estimate our risk of a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. If a calculated ‘heart age’ is higher than our actual age, it indicates a higher risk of developing heart disease. Once we have discovered our ‘heart age’, absolute cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment (http://www.cvdcheck.org.au/ calculator/) enables an effective management of identified modifiable risk factors through lifestyle changes, and where needed, pharmacological therapy.

2. Know your number

Hypertension is a significant risk factor for heart disease. Blood pressure assessment should be based on multiple measurements taken on several separate occasions, at least twice, one or more weeks apart. Home blood pressure monitoring is helpful to establish an accurate diagnosis.

3. Take action

80% of heart disease is preventable, as many of its risk factors are modifiable. Lifestyle intervention is the first treatment strategy to manage heart disease. However, when it is difficult to control the hypertension with lifestyle modification alone, anti-hypertensive medication becomes necessary. Constant high blood pressure (>140/90mmHg) has proven to damage blood vessel walls over time and often up to 70% of patients will need at least two antihypertensive drugs to control blood pressure.

Eagle activated B

Tresos

4. Supplementing your heart

The scientific evidence shows that supplementing with certain vitamins prevents chronic disease, specifically CVD, various types of cancer and osteoporosis (JAMA June 19, 2002, Fairfield KM, Fletcher RH).

Here are my personal recommendations for heart health and general wellbeing. • Good multivitamin, such as Eagle Tresos activated B • Super antioxidants, such as Co Enzyme Q10 and bergamot

• Regular topping up with vitamin C and vitamin D

rom the TCM perspective, the heart has two main functions. Firstly, the heart is the main organ for blood vessels. As a central part of the circulatory system, the heart is primarily responsible for pumping blood and distributing oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This is basically the same concept as the Western medicine perspective for heart function. Secondly, the heart also functions as the master of our mind and emotion. If this functions normally, we can feel energetic, comfortable and quick thinking.

Knowing the two major functions of the heart from the TCM perspective will greatly help us on how to maintain heart health using TCM. Below I would like to share some of my clinical experience.

Keeping a stable emotion to nourish the heart

TCM believes that ‘happiness is the greatest emotion for the heart’. This emotion provides the best condition for the heart to function. New research shows that people with a cheerful personality, a happy spirit and an optimistic mindset are more likely to enjoy longevity and a healthy life, and a lower chance of cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, try to keep yourself in a good emotional state of mind, as this is the priority for heart health. Maintaining a joyous emotion as much as you can, however, it does not mean overindulgance.

Keeping meridians smooth to nourish the heart

The heart is the main organ for blood vessels. It is important that most of the meridians are smooth and there is no blockage. If you can consistently pat and self-press some meridian points for a long period of time, it is great for heart health. This is a simple, practical, safe and effective method of nourishing your heart. Based on my personal experience,

I recommend a couple of meridian points: Baihui, Neiguan, Shenmen, Zusanli and Taichong. After rubbing these points, pat your hands and feet again. Starting from 5-10 minutes, you can adjust the length of time according to your own situation. I have been doing an exercise ‘66 parts of Rejuvenation Exercise’, and I find it is greatly beneficial for me.

Keeping heart health through diet and medicine treatment

TCM believes that the heart belongs to the fire element, the corresponding colour is red, and the corresponding flavour or taste is bitter. Some of the recommended foods are hawthorn fruit, red dates, bitter gourd, loofah, tomatoes and red beans. Chinese medicine that can be used to nourish the heart includes drinking Ginseng tea daily. For the frail and the aged, you may consider taking 1-2 capsules of Cordyceps or Ganoderma every day. You should take Chinese medicine under the guidance of a qualified TCM practitioner.

Is it true that twins have the same blood group? How can we find out our blood group without having to pay for it through the Medicare system? It depends on the formation of the twins. There are two types of twins: 1. Identical (monozygotic), where a single embryo splits into two embryos - will have the same blood type. 2. Fraternal (dizygotic) - may have the same blood type, or they may have different types. Therefore, it may be concluded that twins with different blood types are fraternal. Twins with the same blood type can either be identical or fraternal. Normally if someone wants to know their blood group, there is a cost associated with the test. However, there are certain circumstances, such as, if someone is pregnant or donating blood, then it may potentially be bulkbilled for the blood test.

2

My mother always stops me from eating fruit like oranges, mandarin and watermelon when I have the symptoms of a cold or cough. Does it really matter?

In Chinese medicine, there is a belief that food can have an effect on the body, most often described as increased coldness or heatiness in the body. However, in western medicine, we talk about eating fruit, like oranges and mandarin, that would potentially increase the vitamin C in the body. And this can boost our immune system, especially for someone who has a cold or cough. Watermelon has a high content of sugar and may have diuretic effects increasing the risks of diabetes and going to the toilet. Therefore, an adequate amount is OK but not good to eat excessively.

Overuse of eyes from looking at the computer for long hours can cause eye strain and tiredness. In the long term, it can cause eye dryness, pain, discomfort and increased short-sightedness. Taking breaks in between long-hour computer usage is very important, and if you have dry-eye sensation, it is important to start using moisturising eye drops as soon as symptoms develop. If there is any worsening of the eye symptoms or you have black spots in the eyes, this will definitely warrant a consultation with an eye specialist to determine the pathological cause of the symptoms.

Currently there is no set medication approved in Australia for COVID-19. With any medication, there are side effects and some may result in long term complications. Since there is no fixed or approved medication suitable for COVID-19, the side effects may vary depending on which medication is trialled for treating COVID-19 in the testing/trials. NOTE: The US has just approved the experimental use of the anti-viral drug Remdesivir to treat COVID-19. Japan is also in the process of granting the special approval. Australia is receiving Remdesivir in five hospitals and is likely to test the drug in limited specific scenarios

My eyes often feel tired and sore, and they tend to blur when I change from looking at my computer to looking in the distance. Sometimes, there seems to be a moving black spot in my vision. Should I be concerned?

I have heard that the medication treatment used for COVID-19 patients brings lifetime side effects? Is it true? What could the side effects be?

Does drinking water with meals hinder digestion?

Sufficient water intake can help with digestion but anything in excess can cause more trouble than good.

6

What is the best time to have a flu vaccination injection in Western Australia? How long will the effect of flu vaccine last?

The best time to have flu vaccination is during winter season, which is usually between April to June where most cases of flu happen. However, this year, with COVID-19 in mind, it is important to have flu vaccination early because as the devastating effects of COVID-19 worsen, it is super imposed with another infection, whether it is influenza or a bacterial respiratory tract infection. Therefore, if one can get immunised for flu, it reduces the duration of the symptoms, the severity of the symptoms and the complications from the flu.

How is Chung Wah Community and Aged Care (CAC) dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic?

If

you have been following the latest news and regular updates from the Prime Minister, you will be well aware of the constant changes in social restrictions and regulations that have completely altered our normal ways of living. In all honesty, nothing about this ‘new normal’ feels natural and certain. Despite this uneasy experience, one thing remains the same, that is the continuity of Chung Wah CAC’s services to care and support all the vulnerable individuals in our community, which will always be our top-most priority. As soon as being made aware of the current looming pandemic, Chung Wah CAC took the necessary precautions for the safety of our clients and staff, which were in accordance with all the guidelines issued by the Department of Health and the Australian Government.

As part of CAC’s preventive measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 to our community, many of our social support programs have been temporarily suspended. On a positive note, this has allowed us to be more creative and to think ‘outside of our ordinary box’. Thanks to our incredible CAC team, who has been working tirelessly to establish new services to ensure that our CAC consumers and participants can continue to receive the appropriate care and support. These include the following:

CAC Wellness TV (via YouTube channel)

Catching up with community news, attempting different activities and enjoying some giggles at home with your favourite CAC team through our new program, CAC Wellness TV. A new video is aired every week that features a variety of content, and we guarantee you will never feel bored at home. These videos are informative and at the same

time, highly entertaining for our elderly, while keeping up a healthy lifestyle. All you need to do is log on to YouTube, search for Chung Wah Community & Aged Care and subscribe today.

CAC Activity Book

CAC understands that it is very difficult for a lot of people to stay at home, especially if they are active members of our community. Therefore, we have developed CAC Activity Books, which include colouring exercises and different puzzles, that can keep you busy during this period. The most special part about these Activity Books are the colouring pages, which were designed by one of our talented volunteers, Ms Ng. As a way of expressing gratitude towards our community, electronic copies are available for all our community members to download. Please email enquiry@chungwahcac.org.au should you be interested.

CAC Care Line Support

To maintain our mental wellbeing, it is inevitable that human interaction is a significant part of our daily lives. Therefore, the CAC Care Line Support program was established, with the purpose of giving our clients practical and emotional support in the safest way possible to help them get through

this difficult time. Our staff members have been conducting regular phone calls to all our clients to keep in touch and reduce their risk of social isolation during a period when we are instructed to practice social distancing as much as possible. In fact, being able to talk to our consumers has helped us a lot to develop different programs to cater to the current needs for activities to do at home. During this fluid and ever-changing situation, with no real end in sight, Chung Wah CAC is so proud to have the support of an incredible community, including our clients, staff, support workers and volunteers. Everyone has been working together to keep each other safe and healthy, and we would like to express our sincerest thanks for your understanding, flexibility and cooperation during this challenging period.

It is a painful journey that we are all experiencing together. However, please rest assured that we have been and will be here and stand with you. Together, we will get through this!

Should you have any queries in relation to COVID-19, please do not hesitate to send us an email to COVID19-Response@ chungwahcac.org.au or call us during office hours at (08) 9328 3988.

Year 10
