INTERGENERATIONAL C E N T E R FOR THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES

SITE PLAN: 1 THE BASIS FOR AN ARCHITECTURAL ORDER

An emphasis is placed on the Northeast corner of the site as the point of reference and boundary between the chaos of traffic and the tranquility of a community. A spatial hierarchy originates from the diagonal void and a balance is achieved in a framework that accommodates the volumetric order, the direction of the wind, and the path of the sun.

FRESH AIR: 2 FOSTERING BET TER LIVING CONDITIONS

The diagonal order orients itself to the predominant wind currents from the Southwest while the voids between unit volumes circulate the wind through the units. Air is collected by wind catchers facilitated through the circulation core and through slotted roof structures that circulate the air to the interior of the units. The breathability of both indoor and outdoor spaces enhances the quality of life and promotes a healthy environment for both the elderly and young children.

SUN SHADES: 3 A SYSTEM OF CANTILEVERS BALANCE LIGHT AND SHADOW

Three vertically stacked triangular volumes are rotated on a central axis, resulting in a structure that cantilevers on two levels. Using the defined framework allows the structures to be aggregated and linked to form three rows of housing volumes. The voids created between the rows provide the two main ‘avenues’ shared by the tenants. This system of multi leveled overhangs define the dynamic character of these spaces, with the interplay of light and shade that occur t the day as the sun moves across the horizon. Protection from direct sun plays an important consideration in the design strategy and these spaces provide a pleasant experience and a medium for meaningful interaction.

ROOFTOP SPACES: 4 MULTILEVELED OUTDOOR AREAS SHARED BY EVERYONE

As with the shared avenues created on the ground level, the solid / void relationship also creates dynamic elevated spaces on the rooftops. The character of these spaces are unique in that a network of connected rooftops allow the younger tenants to circulate the whole complex and descend at different points on the ground level. These spaces can also be configured as private or shared outdoor terraces or gardens, creating places of interaction and activity between neighbors.

GROUND FLOOR PLANS FOR GRANDPARENT HOUSING, SENIOR CENTER AND HEAD START

The site is organized to address the urban context towards Wilshire Blvd by fronting the public programs on the streescape. The corner is relieved with public spaces as a buffer and as a response to the nearby parks while the housing units face the edges that are more private.
