PROJECT BRIEF

The project is based on the Moshassuck Square Apartments, a 122 unit multi level apartment complex located at the 400 block of North Main St. in Providence. The building was constructed in the 1970’s and designed by Providence architect William Warner. The structure is mainly a wood frame system sitting on a concrete footing with a brick facade. The complex consists of two main buildings that sit between the Moshassuck River and faces Charles street and North Main street. Our project is an apartment unit located on the North Main side, a four lane street with heavy vehicular traffic with views of the hillside residences that face Benefit St.

Our intervention is specific to the bedroom of a one bedroom unit that faces the street. Our aim is to improve the spatial quality of the room and enhance its function beyond that of a bedroom space. We will replace the two small windows in the bedroom with a large single bay window. The bay window is designed to allow for a sitting space that also integrates into a built-in storage system below the sill. Although simple in nature, the intervention addresses several key improvements at once. Increasing natural daylight that comes in dramatically changes the feel and experience of the room. Having a bay sitting window gives the room the feeling of more space, while generating connections between inside and outside. Utility and function is improved with the integration of a sitting area for reading and shelves for storage, activities and functionality that did not exist before. Room is conserved by eliminating the need for a separate table, chair and shelves. As all street facing units are renovated, the facade of the building is given a new face that now expresses life from within while maintaining relevance within the surrounding built environment.
