The high-design living “gazebo” features an exquisite mix of patterned tile floors, white and pink sofas, Kuna Indians artwork, hand-painted wooden furniture, African masks and black-and-white photographs taken by the owner. The four Caribbean “casitas” (suites) were designed with a burst of shades, considering that the influence of color on health is as important and powerful as the effect of the moon on the sea.

Historical and Colonial City Tour at “Casco Viejo” This unique walled city, consisting of 16th & 17th Century Spanish Colonial Architecture, is a gem which was unknown to most of the outside world until 1997 when UNESCO named Casco Viejo a World Heritage Site. Essentially, this is a melting pot of many cultures converging in one place which is truly unlike any other! It is also home to the Presidential Palace (Palacio de la Garzas - or Heron’s Palace). The plazas, such as Plaza de Catedral, Plaza Bolivar, Plaza de Francia, Plaza Herrera and others, are social meeting places for residents and visitors alike. There are restaurants (some of the best in the city in fact), cafes, boutiques, shops, beautiful buildings surrounding the plazas and immaculately manicured gardens.
Portobello Traditions This Caribbean fishing village is so laid-back and languorous, it is incredible to ponder that it was once the greatest Spanish port in Central America. Portobelo is experiencing something of a cultural revival, with interest surging in Congo art and dancing. Enjoy this art tour with The Portobelo Bay Foundation. We have organized an art workshop with a young local artist who will teach you to prepare handiworks made of wood, and paint it in Portobelian footings. After lunch, an amazing adventure on board the train will take you back to Panamå city. The road runs from Monday to Friday along the Panama Canal passing through a lush tropical jungle and along the canal locks, through the historic Culebra Cut and crossing narrow roads on Lake Gatun.
Visit to the Emberá Quera Indians In the morning, your guide will pick you up at your hotel and take you up north towards Buena Vista. There you will step into small boats, which will carry you up the Gatún River. A fascinating and dense jungle will accompany you on your boat trip until you arrive at Embera Quera, one of seven indigenous tribes in Panama. The people of this tribe will welcome you at the pier and gladly give you an idea on how they still live today. The villages chief will give you a brief explication on their history, traditions, cultures, believes and handicrafts. Then, a traditional lunch of fish and plantains prepared by the Embera women will be served to you. In the afternoon you will experience a traditional dance and have the opportunity to shop for handicrafts. The sale of local products directly benefits the village and helps to pay the school fees for the children. You can also get a temporary tattoo painted on your arm or leg.
Half Day Panama City Tour & Miraflores Locks At Miraflores, you can see the huge vessels passing the Panama Canal, during the entire day, so this allows you to see many ships getting lifted or lowered 16 meters in two distinct steps. A visit to the Museum and Visitor Center at Miraflores in included, where you have a good idea on the construction of the Canal, as you learn about the history of the canal and its significance for Panama and the entire world trade. Afterwards, you continue on to the Amador Causeway, a road that connects three Islands in the Pacific Ocean and offers magnificent views on the Canal on one side and on the skyline of Panama City on the other side. The tour ends at the Casco Viejo, Panama City’s colonial quarter, where you feel set back in time as you admire the lovely colonial houses, the narrow roads and the impressive churches.
Gatun Lake Boat Tour Travel on small boats northbound on the canal for 25 minutes where you might come close to some of the big ships that transit the canal daily. Slowly you will motor along the forested banks of Gatun Lake, a protected area. Look for wildlife such as Capuchin Monkeys, 3-toed sloth, Howler Monkeys, various kinds of Toucans and other bird life. This is a place to observe the raw regenerative power of the forest as it struggles to claim what was once wild.
Panama Canal Railway, Agua Clara Locks & Gatun Lake Undertake a train trip on the historical and original railway course from Panama City to Colón. This 1-hour travel leads you through the jungle and along the Panama Canal. After the beautiful trip, you will continue from Colón to the impressive Agua Clara Visitor Center located on the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. The center offers a breathtaking panoramic view that contrasts two particular scenarios that generate mixed feelings. On one side you will find the famous Gatun Lake, where cargo ships or other vessels transit every day, while on the other side, but from a different perspective, you will be amazed by the view of the expansion. Continue towards the town of Gamboa, located on a sharp bend of the Chagres River. Then, travel on small boats northbound on the canal for 25 minutes where you might come close to some of the big ships that transit the canal daily. Slowly you will motor along the forested banks of Gatun Lake, a protected area. Look for wildlife such as Capuchin Monkeys, 3-toed sloth, Howler Monkeys, various kinds of Toucans and other bird life.

Cooking Class at Manolo Caracol Restaurant A walk into the Author’s Food! Owned by Spanish chef Manolo Madueño, this restaurant-cum-art gallery in a restored colonial building that is dedicated to the joy of dining. All you need to do is choose your beverage—perhaps a beer or a Spanish wine—and wait for the succession of succulent surprises that the waiters will deliver promptly. Meals tend to be strong on seafood, but there are always a couple of meat dishes. Manolo’s is for people who like to eat big. The colonial building housing the restaurant is adorned with religious art and local handicrafts, and has an all-around pleasant and cozy atmosphere. With its eclectic shrine to the Virgin Mary, and ancient, whitewashed walls hung with modern art, it’s a charming spot to spend a few hours, especially when Manolo is there working the crowd.
There’s no menu for the most part at Manolo Caracol since Manolo works with seasonal, high-quality ingredients that he finds in Panama City’s markets, integrating them beautifully into simple yet original Caribbean-inspired dishes. The day’s menu might change on a whim, depending on the inspirations of Madueño’s Rolodex of recipes. Roast pork might be prepared with hibiscus jelly, or with a corn tortilla and a tree tomato sauce. Shrimp could be served as ceviche, or grilled and paired with coconut rice.
El Valle Market Shopping Experience & Cooking Class Tasting the Local Flavor This exclusive tour includes a visit to Anton Valley, a majestic region that features forests, rivers and many trails. Experience the incredible adventure of walking and interacting with the unique wildlife that inhabits this area and giving you the opportunity of spotting many different species of mammals, insects, reptiles, flowers, trees and many other creatures that inhabit the area. A visit to the fruits and vegetables local market will follow, where a list of needed ingredients will be provided (in Spanish) for you to find out what they are in order to buy them. This cooking experience will begin with a ‘behind the scenes’ guided market tour, where you will meet many vendors as you will learn about locally grown products and start selecting all of the ingredients that will be used later in the cooking class. Later on, you will visit the home of a local lady and under her instructions you will prepare a Panamanian Recipe packed with flavor, giving you enough time to share with her in her home and enjoy the delicious lunch that you just have cooked.

Highlights for Entertainment Los Diablicos Dances These dances have their origin in European masques and in the case of the devil dances in Panama, they all serve a religious purpose: the evangelization of the other. Most of the devil dances are usually practiced for the religious feast of Corpus Christi that celebrates the presence of Jesus in the host. These practices are colonial, but there are no dates that we can specify as to when or where they started. Most probably very early in the 16th century. The Diablicos Sucios are the ones from Los Santos and Chitre. They wear red and black stripped suits that originally were painted with charcoal and “achiote” over cotton “manta sucia”. The cone that they use to hold the mask is beautifully decorated with red guacamaya feathers. They also use castanets and a stick.
El Tamborito Panama is one of the richest countries when speaking about traditional music and dances. Panamanians love to gather together and dance, whether it is amongst friends and family or for local or national celebrations. The Tamborito is, no doubt about it, the king of folkloric dances. The word itself means “small drum”. It comes from a mix of Hispanic and African traditional dances. The rhythm is based on “Congos”, a folkloric dance from the Province of Colon that was introduced by the African slaves in the 16th Century. The Tamborito is played with three small drums, one for the high tones, one for the low tones and a caja, another one for the rhythm. Depending on the region, it may also include a Spanish guitar, a violin and an almirez, a cooking mortar with Arabic origins that has become a percussion instrument.
Congo Dances The Congo Dance of Panama is the most unique and colorful manifestation of folklore in the province of Colon. The dance has its roots in Africa and came to Panama by way of escaped former slaves known as “Cimarrons.” The dance has been passed on from generation to generation, and can be seen today in the province of Colon, in coastal towns such as Portobello where the AfroPanamanian legacy remains very much alive. The Congo is not just a dance, but is also a form of expression by which the “Cimarrons” convey their feelings of anger, pain and joy. It was also a way to strengthen their spirit. The dance tells a story, as the characters acting out a fight with the devil who is said to be loose during the Carnival. At the end they are saved by the “Reina Conga” (the Queen of Congos), helped by “Pajarito” (little bird) and “Juan de Dios” (John God). The Congo Dance represents a fusion between the Catholic religion and the African culture.

Esperanza Project This interesting tour takes you to an experience organized by young people who had a difficult life in the past due to their involvement in drugs and gangs. Thanks to the “Fundación Esperanza” -a very successful gang intervention program, launched by co-founder, Mr KC Hardin (a former New York corporate lawyer)-, which works in social projects in Casco Viejo, these youngsters have been reformed and able to go into a new and productive stage of their lives. Since launching the foundation in 2013, nearly 50 gang members have completed the intervention program, going on to find gainful employment, with 11 starting their own businesses; in the process, three of the four gangs have been demobilized completely. Join some of the successful graduates and learn their stories as they lead you on a tour of Casco Viejo, the city’s World Heritage Site. The program has gained world-wide attention, including earning Mr. Hardin a John P. McNulty Prize in 2016.

We design programs considering our environmental impact. Due to its location and tropical climate, Panama is a wealth of natural resources. The numerous rain forests and the Panama Canal have a significant effect on the global climate as well as the country’s economy. With the help of internal programs and global partners, Panama now promotes sustainable or “green” lifestyles. In its purest sense, sustainable tourism allows tourists to travel to natural destinations, builds environmental awareness, provides financial benefits and minimizes the impact of tourism while at the same time respecting local culture and empowering the local people.
