Yet, when it comes to running for elected office, many candidates go in without really understanding the reality of what they’re signing themselves up for. Driven by a passion to serve, many candidates have to figure out the process as they go. For Carlsbad City Councilman Michael Schumacher, who served the city as a planning commissioner, a member of the Design Review Board and as an appointed councilman before successfully launching his A MESSAGE first campaign last year, the process included talking to as many people who had experienced campaign life as he could. “Last November was really the first time I ever ran for public office,” Schumacher said. “I reached out to friends and colleagues to help me ... I spoke with current and former city council members, school board members — it was really an informal process.” That’s why he thinks that

The State of the Chamber in 2015 The 2015 State of the City Luncheon, which took place on Friday, Aug. 21 was a resounding success. We had a sold-out audience of more than 400 who came to hear from Carlsbad Mayor Matt Hall about the projects and other developments that are moving the City of Carlsbad forward. At the luncheon, I also presented a brief State of the Chamber Address. Here are the highlights of what I said. The chamber has accomplished a lot this year! Let me start by pointing out that the Chamber operates on five core competencies. Everything that we do as a chamber aligns with one of the following goals: • Building a strong local economy • Promoting the community • Providing networking and business development opportunities • Representing business before government • Political action

Think about the number 1,360. That is how many businesses, how many employers in the north county region are members

of the Carlsbad Chamber and derive value from their association with the Chamber. Next think about the many thousands of people these companies employ and how that drives our local economy. Last year, the Chamber’s seven committees accounted for more than 100 meetings. We also provided numerous professional development opportunities, workshops and other crucial services

attended dozens of new business ribbon cutting ceremonies, anniversary celebrations and grand openings. We held an Eco Bus Field Trip to the San Diego Gas & Electric Center for Innovation to learn the latest in sustainable best practices. This year the Chamber is launching a Candidate Academy to educate people on what it takes to run for elected office. The chamber is looking for those sincerely interested in running for public office, be it school board, water board or higher office. Be sure to visit the Carlsbad chamber website to review the impressive list of panelists and presenters for this new program.

We held symposiums with the city on disaster preparedness with the Ready Carlsbad Business Alliance. The Chamber also held more than a dozen evening Sundowner receptions hosting hundreds of members at a variety of businesses citywide. In the area of business development the chamber, in concert with the small business administration, conducted more than 300 counseling sessions in our business success center with entrepreneurs who are looking to launch businesses right here in our region. Our signature events include the annual awards dinner, our outstanding educational awards dinner, business expo, small business luncheon and the State of the City Luncheon. The chamber’s program of work includes thousands of hours of supporting our member businesses are made much more impressive when we recognize that the calendar only has 222 working days, and that the chamber staff is made up of less than a dozen employees. Thanks to all of you and your businesses for your continued support of our Chamber.

Council approves ‘85/15’ plan

Do you have what it takes to join our board?

The Carlsbad City Council voted unanimously to approve “The Agua Hedionda South Shore Specific Plan,” which will guide the development of 203 acres of land bounded by Interstate Highway 5, Cannon Road and the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. The vote came at the end of a meeting on Aug. 25 which included more than 130 speakers addressing the council on the proposed plan. The approval allows Caruso Affiliated to build a shopping center that will be anchored by a Nordstrom on about 27 acres of land. It sets aside the rest of the land — about 177 acres — as open space and the continuation of strawberry farming and agriculture. “We are not always going to agree, but as long as we focus on the facts, we can come to good decisions that benefit Carlsbad,” said Mayor Matt Hall. “This plan has been developed in collaboration with the community, and it goes above and beyond what is required, by ensuring the future of the strawberry fields and providing public access to open space in perpetuity. That has tremendous value and will enhance our community for years to come.” The issue came before the council as a result of an initiative drive initiated by Caruso Affiliated, which collected more than 20,000 signatures from residents for the project — more than double the 9,784 signatures (or 15 percent of Carlsbad’s registered voters)

Do you envision yourself as a leader? Do you know someone who is a devoted member of the Chamber and would enjoy contributing even more? The Chamber’s Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for its Board of Directors vacancies for 2016. If you are interested in a director position, or if you want to nominate someone,

that was required to bring the issue before the council. The council had three options: approving the project, putting it up for a vote or requesting more information. Before the council action, Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ted Owen, at the direction of the Board of Directors, was one of many who urged the

council to approve the project outright, noting that delaying the project would put off the benefits of increased jobs, sales taxes and property taxes that the project will provide. Owen also noted that if the project should somehow fall through, there would be no guarantee that another applicant would make the same financial commitment to the

city or have the same concern for open space. “This project is as close to the ideal project for what this land has been designated for,” Owen said. “Nothing that we have seen indicates that Caruso Affiliated has anything but the intention to give the city a quality project that meets and exceeds the expectations of the city’s residents and their desire for projects that continue to make Carlsbad a great place to live, work and play.” The plan will now proceed to the California Coastal Commission for consideration. Rick Caruso, founder and CEO of Caruso Affiliated, the plan’s sponsor, said he hopes to complete the project as early as 2018. The trails, agriculture and other open space areas will be developed before the other project elements, he said.

‘Baile’ returns for Tri-City’s 35th gala Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s annual black tie ball will return for its 35th anniversary paying homage to its original name – Baile de Esperanza. The elegant affair will take place on Sat., Nov. 7 at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort, Golf Club & Spa. All proceeds raised will benefit the expansion and renovation of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Labor and Delivery Department at Tri-City Medical Center. “’Esperanza’ means ‘hope,’ and that’s the perfect sentiment for this year’s event,” said Glen Newhart, president of Tri-City Hospital Foundation. Since the 2014 gala, the Foundation has focused heavily on fundraising for the Tri-City Medical Center NICU and updating and growing its Women and Infant Services area. Expanding the NICU, including the addition of private rooms, will allow hundreds of critically ill infants to receive care close to home

while also granting greater privacy and comfort for mother and baby, as well as increased efficiency for physicians and nurses. The fully upgraded services are anticipated to be available during the summer of 2016. While enjoying an evening of giving back at the Baile, attendees will be inspired with a heartwarming presentation starring the many success stories of Tri-City Medical Center. The event will also feature a traditional filet and lobster menu, live entertainment, a high-end auction and of course, a full evening of dancing. Registration for regular attendance and sponsorships is now open at TriCityHospitalFoundation.org, starting at $350 per person. For more details on Baile de Esperanza and the Foundation’s work in the North County community, visit TriCityHospitalFoundation. org or call 760-940-3370.

A familiar face helps promote the Village You might already know me as the owner of Coolest Shoes in California, a casual-comfort boutique for men, women and children. So, why am I writing a monthly column on the Village? I was a Carlsbad Village Association Board Member because I wanted to be more involved in my town. I wanted to help affect change in the Village to better serve my customers. I wanted to see it continue to thrive and grow and truly become the preeminent destination in North County. Recently the board saw a need to hire a Program Manager to manage and expand the village events, promote the village, and ultimately support the hundreds of Village merchants we all love. Who better to enrich the village than a merchant with a marketing background? And as a solopreneur who, with the guidance of the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, managed to grow her business from a single product sold at the Carlsbad Village Faire to having a brickand-mortar store with three employees, I knew the process and could help new village merchants. With the help of tremendous employees, sharing my time this summer between the CVA office and my store, which are both conveniently located on State Street, has been pretty seamless. In the last 90 days the Carlsbad Village Association has been very busy with its three summer events and its weekly

Farmers’ Market. This summer’s Flicks at the Fountain movie series has been a tremendous success. Carlsbad residents of all ages have enjoyed movies outdoors while enjoying pizza and picnic dinners right in their beach chairs. An average of 200 people attended each screening. “Flicks at the Fountain is such a great event,” said sponsor Zac Markham, owner of Humble Olive Oils. “It has a very special feel to it and helps make the Village unique; we were proud to be a sponsor.” With just a few more Friday nights left in this summer’s Friday Night Live “busker” style music series, we’re looking forward to having bands like The Bad Carls, The Moonlight Ramblers and others play on State Street. Friday Night Live runs every Friday night through September 25th from 7pm to 9pm. The 17th Annual Art in the Village on Aug. 9 was a huge success. With 100 local and regional artists and over 5,000 attendees, State Street and Grand Avenue played host to an intimate, open-air art show complete with live musicians to set the mood.

The 17th Annual Art in the Village on Aug. 9 drew more than 100 artists and 5,000 to the Village of Carlsbad. The State Street Certified Organic Farmers’ Market continues to improve with age! With over 50 vendors offering everything from locallygrown strawberries to specialty breads and pasta, make Wednesday’s in the Village a healthy routine! As Program Manager, I will continue with existing events but plan to add others so that the Village becomes “front of mind” when you think of shopping, dining and entertainment. Would a “Taste of Carlsbad” be of interest? Would decorated retail store windows and festive lights during the holidays draw you to the village? How can we help you enjoy the Village more? Please contact me at info@carlsbadvillage.com with any questions or ideas.

Business tools planned for library updates If you are a small-business owner and haven’t taken advantage of what our libraries have to offer, you may want to keep an eye on the upcoming remodels of the Georgina Cole Library on Carlsbad Village Drive and the Carlsbad City Library on Dove Lane. Both libraries will feature a “living room” feel where users can sit and work in a more comfortable setting, with better access to power outlets and enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities. A big part of the redesigns include improved spaces for collaboration, and the Dove Lane library will add rooms equipped with new meeting technology, making them an ideal setting to prepare for conferences, conduct group research or meet with clients. The Dove Lane library will also feature an expanded café with an appealing menu of food and drink choices, perfect for informal meetings and networking. The libraries have always been a go-to place for valuable information that will help you make business decisions. All you need is a Carlsbad library card to access such premium databases as Reference USA, which contains a wealth of information on businesses and residents that can help you grow your business; Weiss Financial Ratings, which rates thousands of banks, insurance companies, stocks and mutual funds; and Lynda.com, a video library of top-quality training and informational courses taught by industry experts. The city’s libraries also offer a variety of computer classes including how to research financial and stock information, saving images and content to the cloud, and using Microsoft Office applications. For the remodel, the Cole and Dove libraries will need to temporarily close for several months during construction. Only one library will be closed at a time. Cole Library be closed from Sept. 1, 2015, through early 2016. Work on the Dove Library will take place in early 2016 through mid-2016 and will begin after the Georgina Cole Library construction is complete. Construction at the Dove Library is being phased to allow sections of the facility to remain open during some periods of

work. The Carlsbad City Library Learning Center, at 3368 Eureka Place across from Holiday Park, will continue to provide library services while the other libraries are closed. For more information about the project, visit the website at www.carlsbadca.gov/ libraryredesigns.

Professional Development Opportunities In addition to modernizing the library buildings, the city is increasing its programming geared toward local professionals. The library already conducts an evening workshop series, “Your Library Means Business,” every year from January through April. These programs teach skills to help new and small businesses and include such topics as developing business and marketing plans, finding financing and other subjects that will help you grow your

business. Keep tabs on the library’s Web page for details on the 2016 program. The city is offering a new program this fall for small businesses called, “Let’s Do Lunch,” a workshop series designed to combine instruction and networking. The series will kick off on Sept. 23 with Business Finances: Traditional to Nontraditional Funding Options, featuring Joseph Molina, a specialist in advising small businesses. The second get-together will be on Oct. 28 and will feature a program on Social Media Marketing: General Tools and Focus on Trends in the Social Media Realm Today, conducted by marketing expert Cyndi Darlington. On Nov. 18, Joseph Molina will return to conduct The Motivation and Leadership Workshop. Each session is 90 minutes, including time for questions and answers and networking. Workshops are free and will begin at noon in the Gowland Meeting Room at the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane. Bring your lunch; light refreshments and beverages will be provided.

Solutions for Change gala to benefit homeless veterans Solutions for Change will hold its annual fundraising gala, “An Evening to Remember… with our American Heroes,” on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 5-11 p.m. at the Jet Source airplane hangar at the Carlsbad Airport, which will be stylishly transformed to welcome more than 800 guests to the high-profile affair. This year’s event will honor the men and women who have served in our armed forces, while raising support for programs and services that help solve family homelessness. Event guest speakers are Taya KYLE Kyle and Clint Bruce. Kyle is a veteran family activist and widow of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle (the subject of the 2014 Academy Award-winning film, “American Sniper”) and author of “American Wife: A Memoir of Love, War, Faith, and Renewal.” BRUCE Presenting along with Kyle is Bruce, a former Navy SEAL and pro football player, who is also nationally recognized speaker and author on veteran issues and leadership. The evening will feature gourmet cuisine and will also showcase live music, exciting live and silent auctions, entertainment and special presentations honoring the men and women who have served in our nation’s military. “This year’s event is our boldest initiative yet, kicking off a 1,000 day campaign to raise awareness and support for what many are calling the nation’s most innovative solution to family homelessness,” said Chris Megison, president and CEO of Solutions for Change. More than 97 percent of consumers research local businesses online. With searches from smart phones and mobile devices surging to unprecedented levels, can potential customers find your business on Google’s map? A survey we recently conducted of Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce members found that one out of every four businesses could not be found on Google maps. Another 25 percent have a “placeholder” listing. That means their business has an online presence, but it hasn’t been verified or claimed by the owner. These listing could be inaccurate or reflect poorly on the company in question. Slightly less than half of all businesses in the survey have a verified/claimed listing, meaning the business owner has control over the way the business appears, and has added photos, updated hours of operation, and ensured the that the businesses name, address and phone number appear correctly to potential customers. We have found that Name/ Address/Phone — what we call ‘NAP’ — consistency is one of the most important factors in influencing local search results rankings. Search engines treat every site where your NAP info is posted as a citation, and having consistent contact info is key.

TECH TALK

BRADY CHATFIELD CEO HIGHER POWER SEO

In addition to grading the search listings and visibility, we also examined how many businesses had online reviews from customers in Google’s database, and the average strength of those reviews (on Google’s scale from 1-star to 5-star ratings).

Join Higher Power SEO and the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce at the 2015 Business Expo Sept. 22, to get more Carlsbad businesses on the map. We will be assisting businesses claim their Google listings to ensure that their customers can find them.

Only about 35 percent of businesses in the survey had Google reviews. Of those with reviews, only one-quarter had Google’s minimum number of reviews (five) to show an average review rating in the search results. Online reviews are crucial to converting prospects into customers. About 25 percent of the reviews we found were left on sites that were unverified by the business owner. That’s troubling, because customers are making a judgment on your company, based on a site you have no control over. Just 10 percent of businesses in the survey had a Google rating that was 4 stars or higher. Although the average rating of local businesses may appear gloomy, improving your business’s online image is fairly straightforward. The way Google displays local search listings is actually pretty simple. First, make sure your business listing is verified. Second, update the listing to ensure it’s accurate with respect to your company’s name, address and phone number. Third, optimize your listing with quality photos, updated business hours and coupons, if applicable. Lastly, invite customers to leave reviews online. If you do these four things, you’ll be ahead of 90 percent of your competition.

ER vs. urgent care: Where should you go? When an emergency strikes, you know you need medical care fast. But what if you’re not sure if it’s a true emergency? How can you tell if what you or a loved one is experiencing should have you rushing to the ER? While the answer is not always simple, knowing the difference between urgent care and emergency care and where to seek treatment could save your life in an emergency.

TO YOUR HEALTH

SHAWN EVANS, M.D. Emergency Medicine Physician SCRIPPS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL LA JOLLA

While urgent care clinics are always available, your primary care physician will have a better picture of your overall health for a more accurate diagnosis.

TIME FOR THE ER

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency rooms handle more than 136 million visits annually, including more than 40 million injuryrelated visits. While emergency departments were designed to provide fast, life-or-limb-saving care, many people use the ER as a place to receive urgent care without realizing it. Urgent care centers are walk-in, outpatient clinics found throughout San Diego County that primarily treat injuries or illnesses requiring immediate care but are not serious enough to require an emergency room visit. Still, if you’re ever in doubt, it’s better to be safe and go to the closest ER. Sometimes driving yourself or a loved one to the emergency room won’t get you the medical care needed fast enough. Many people are confused about when to call 911 but it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you are in doubt,

call 911. Do not drive if you are having severe chest pain or severe bleeding, if you feel like you might faint or if your vision is impaired. For certain medical emergencies, such as a heart attack or stroke, taking an ambulance is safer because paramedics can deliver life-saving care on the way to the hospital. These are some of the conditions that are considered medical emergencies: • Persistent chest pains, especially if it radiates to your arm or jaw, or is accompanied by sweating, vomiting or shortness of breath. • Severe pain, particularly in the abdomen or starting halfway down the back. • Broken bones or dislocated joints • Loss of balance or fainting

• Difficulty speaking, altered mental status or confusion • Weakness or paralysis • Severe heart palpitations • Falls with injury or while taking blood thinning medications • Newborn baby with a fever • Intestinal bleeding • Head, face and eye injuries • Severe flu or cold symptoms • High fevers or fevers with rash • Bleeding that won’t stop or a large open wound • Serious burns

Some symptoms that can be treated at urgent care include: • Fever without rash

• Minor trauma such as a common sprain • Painful urination • Persistent diarrhea • Vomiting • Broken bones of the wrist, hand, ankle or foot that have no obvious need to reset and have not broken the skin.

BE PREPARED FOR MEDICAL CARE

Whether you’re going to urgent care, the ER or your primary care physicians’ office, it’s good to keep a list of all the medications you take with you including dosages and any over-the-counter medications and vitamins. Many medications, and even vitamins, can interact with the treatment options your physician plans to use. Scripps offers four emergency room locations, three urgent care offices and primary care physicians throughout the county. If you or a loved one is experiencing symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, call 9-1-1. ”To Your Health” is brought to you by the physicians and staff of Scripps. For more information or to make an appointment, please visit www.scripps.org/CBJ or call (858) 348-4210.

If you have unused prescription drugs in your house, put Sept. 26 on your calendar. That is the date of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, which will take place across the U.S. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. The following North County Scripps Health Pharmacy locations will participate as collection sites: Scripps Encinitas Hospital 354 Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas

Scripps Coastal Medical Center 2176 Salk Ave., Carlsbad

Scripps Rancho Bernardo Clinic 15004 Innovation Drive, San Diego

Urgent care departments are same-day clinics that can handle a variety of conditions that need to be treated right away but are not emergencies. As such the wait time is shorter and less costly than a visit to the emergency room.

With the help of the local tourism industry, including several Carlsbadbased resorts, Cal State University San Marcos has launched a new program that will help those currently employed in the hospitality industry and those looking for a job in this field to earn a professional certificate from the Business of Hospitality. The program, which starts this fall, is comprised of seven courses that provide training in both customerfacing and managerial aspects of the hospitality business, giving participants a better understanding of the industry from a “big picture” perspective that goes beyond specific roles or job descriptions. Classes are being hosted on-site at the Cape Rey Resort, Sheraton Resort Carlsbad, and the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The leisure and hospitality industry jobs are in high demand in San Diego County. From April to May this year, it added 4,900 new jobs in the county, the majority of them in accommodations and food services. CSUSM’s Professional Certificate in the Business of Hospitality is approved for the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIAO), making it an excellent option for those looking to increase their marketability, transition to a new field, or further a career in hospitality. La Costa Greens is one of the communities that is in Walter Management’s portfolio, which includes master-planned communities, condominiums, planned residential developments, industrial parks, business centers, downtown high-rises and mixed-use developments throughout San Diego and Riverside counties.

WALTERS ›Continued from Page 1 Walters Management was founded on a commitment to creating a better quality of life for Californians living in local communities. With beginnings working in apartment and commercial portfolios, Farinelli has spent decades building expertise that has contributed to Walters’ ability to continuously exceed expectations. Responsible for the company’s growth, he has persistently focused on his own professional development. Over the years, he has spent time on the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, served on the Board of Directors of the California Association of Community Managers and obtained numerous industry accreditations. By pursuing these various valued industry certifi cations, Farinelli has empowered himself and Walters Management with resources

and knowledge to provide the best services possible to their customer base. When Farinelli isn’t at the office helping Walters become an industry leader, he is Joe, the Carlsbad resident. He made the move from East County to Carlsbad in 1997 and hasn’t looked back. Raising his five children in the area, Farinelli has enjoyed participating in sports leagues, cheering on La Costa Canyon High, and dining on local cuisine. When asked about his favorite, he couldn’t just choose one, “If I want Mexican food its Casa de Bandini or Fidel’s, a good steak and its West Steakhouse or Tommy V’s and Italian it’s probably Vigilucci’s. It’s hard to have one favorite with so many great choices”. Due to his community management expertise, he has been able to pair his professional and personal life as a Carlsbad community member “We’ve watched the development of south Carlsbad residential neighborhoods and commercial centers for the

last 18 years,” he said. “We are fortunate enough to manage many of the communities in Carlsbad and feel like we have contributed greatly to improving the quality of life for many of the homeowners living in the communities we manage.” Not only do the positive changes we see in San Diego communities and Walters’ steady growth substantiate the value of Farinelli’s leadership efforts, he has continuously been recognized by industry leading organizations. With unwavering dedication to Walters Management’s success, Joseph Farinelli has used his past experience, pursuit of industry education, and leadership skills to play a key role in making Walters Management a force to be reckoned with in the community management industry.

The 2015 Citizens Awards encompass eight categories that honor corporate citizenship best practices. The Best Disaster Response & Community Resilience category is for companies that go above and beyond to create successful resilience initiatives. These companies have proven that the business sector has the ability and desire to create impact. The winner for this category will be selected by a committee of corporate peers and experts in the field.

“We’re proud that the U.S. Chamber Foundation named Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce as a finalist for the 2015 Best Disaster Response & Community Resilience award,” said Ted Owen, President and CEO of the Carlsbad Chamber. “The Citizens award for this category recognizes a single strategic initiative focused on improving disaster respond and community resilience measures. We’re thrilled to be recognized as a business that understands and sustains its linkages with the community.” The winner of the award will be announced during a ceremony that will be held Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Washington, D.C.

SEPTEMBER 2015

AN AWARD-WINNING, MONTHLY PUBLICATION OF THE CARLSBAD CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

It’s ‘All About that Space’ at the Business Expo I’m not much of a singer, but recently you might have heard me belting out for anyone who listens: “It’s all about that space, ‘bout that space - Business Expo!” That’s because I’m very excited about the return of one of our signature events, the Business Expo, which will take place from 2-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22 at LEGOLAND California Resort. Of all of the events that we organize at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, the Business Expo is one of my favorites. That’s because it allows our members to interact with the public, allowing them to see what we here at the Chamber already know — that they have some really cool products and services. And we’ve got so much lined up for this year — I don’t even know where to start. So I’ll just get to it: • Have you ever wanted to stay at the LEGOLAND California Resort hotel? We’ll, if you’re lucky, you might just get the chance. As our site sponsor — the Expo

monitors, microwaves, coffee makers etc. (No batteries or bulbs).

The Business Expo will take place Sept. 22 at LEGOLAND California Resort. It will feature many vendors including an appearance by the Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps fire truck. will take place at the LEGOLAND parking lot on a day the theme park is closed to the public — attendees will have an opportunity to enter a drawing to win a one-night stay at the hotel and four two-day park hopper tickets!

• Are you a business owner? If so, have you registered your Google My Business page yet? If not, join us at the Expo and help us “Put Carlsbad on the Map.” (See the article on Page 6) for details.

• Be a little more green! E-World Recyclers will be on hand to help you recycle your unwanted products. Make sure to bring all electronicshousehold, business and industrial-computers,

That’s not including all of the Chamber members who will be exhibiting. To see who has confirmed so far, see our ad on Page 10. I get great joy in watching the interactions that take place at the annual expo between the members of the public and the exhibitors. That’s why exhibitors often use the Business Expo as an opportunity to showcase their new services and products. It’s a great place for people to come in and visit with a company.

It allows them to interact one-on-one with representatives from the company. While some people might not feel comfortable picking up the phone and asking them about their service, the Business Expo allows them to do just that. Th ey can ask questions and find out about a product without feeling that they’re setting themselves up for a hard sell. While you might be able to do some fact finding easily on-line these days, a website can’t compete with that true personal experience and the immediacy of one-onone interactions. Admission to the 2015 Business Expo is free, but to receive free event parking, you must visit www.carlsbad.org and register. While LEGOLAND California will be closed, the theme park’s restaurants will still be open, and attendees can get discounts for the day of the event. Also, the Sea Life Aquarium will be open (requires paid admission).
